The 3 different types of Cape Town free walking tours
There are 3 walking tours to choose from; historical, apartheid (racial segregation), and Bo-Kaap (the colourful Muslim neighbourhood). Each tour is 90 minutes and explores different areas within the city centre. All 3 tours depart from the same location at Motherland Coffee at Mandela Rhodes Place, Wale St & Georges Mall, Cape Town City Centre. Tours depart twice a day at either 11 am, 2 pm, or 4 pm. Below we will share with you the highlights of each tour.
Free historical walking tour
We decided that the historical tour would be the perfect introduction to the city. Our guide, Ken, was articulate, funny and informative. His love of the city was visible in his detailed explanation and description of Cape Town.
The first stop on the historical tour was Green Market Square. Here we learned about its history and why it’s called Green Market. We also visited an infamous tree stump, which we think is best left explained by your guide. Ken then chronicled the arrival of colonists and the changing landscape of the city throughout the years of European occupation. Lastly, we took a stroll through Company’s Garden to admire the flora and fauna. A walk through a beautiful park is pleasant enough, but Ken’s insight into how old some trees were and where they were imported from, made the stroll so much more interesting. It was by far our favourite part of the tour. The curiously cute little critters at our feet made it more fun too.
This tour departs every day, rain or shine at 11 am and 4:20 pm.
Free Bo-Kaap walking tour
Our thirst for information was not yet fully quenched, so that same day, in the afternoon we went on a second walking tour. The Bo-Kaap is a colourful Muslim neighbourhood situated uphill, with spectacular views of the mountains surrounding Cape Town. Its name comes from the Afrikaans word ‘bo’, meaning ‘up’…Up Cape!
First, we were given an introduction to the slavery that tragically occurred in Cape Town from the year 1658, until 1806. Most of these enslaved people came from eastern parts of the world like Indonesia, India, and Sri Lanka. We learned about how the locals in the Bo-Kaap are fighting against gentrification, due to the fact their neighbourhood sits in one of the most desired locations in all of Cape Town. We also found out that the country’s national dish (bobotie) has deep roots within the Bo-Kaap. Want to know the reason why the locals decided to paint their houses in different colours? We suggest you go on this walking tour!
This tour departs from the Motherland Cafe at 2 pm and 4.20 pm daily.
Free apartheid walking tour
The next day at 11 am, we embarked on another tour of the city. By this point, we were familiar faces among the staff and they knew us by name. Last but not least, we embarked on the apartheid tour. Apartheid is the local tongue for ‘separation’. Apartheid started in 1948. It was a tool used by the white minority to gain political, economic, and social system control of South Africa. They created a hierarchy among the different races of people to create a division in the communities.
During apartheid, social classes were classified based on a variety of factors; the dimension of your jaw, the width of your shoulders, and of course, the colour of your skin. One interesting classification was “honorary whites”, by which rich individuals (often businessmen) of any race were given the rights equivalent to that of a white person, to conduct their overseas business efficiently. Another way in which a person was determined as either “white” or “coloured” was the pencil test. This interesting method of classification will be demonstrated on your walking tour, should you decide to take it.
We learned about many protests that occurred in South Africa during the time of Apartheid; “purple rain” being the most interesting and memorable. We also learned about the laws during the time of apartheid. Passbooks (Dompas) were used to subjugate non-white South Africans. Mixed-race relationships were punishable by up to 6 months in jail. Being the child of parents from different races was seen as being “born a crime”, up until 1995. Our guide Jervais was a great storyteller. He told stories with such enthusiasm and left us going home with plenty of movie recommendations relating to the content of the tour.
This tour departs at 11 am and 2 pm daily.
Monetary tips for the tour
Each of the tours relies solely on tips. The guides don’t receive a salary for their time and effort. Each person is different, so whatever you decide to donate, make it a generous amount by your standard. The Cape Town free walking tours were started as the cost of other tours was expensive. However, the guides wanted to give visitors the chance to learn about Cape Town and its history without forcing people to break the bank.

Where to stay in Cape Town
91 Loop Boutique Hostel: Cape Town has tons of hotels and hostels for everyone’s needs, but 91 Loop has to be the best! They offer all types of rooms; dorms, male dorms, female dorms, and private rooms. The hostel even offers pod-style dorms that make for the perfect mix between a social environment and a private space. The hostel also boasts a bar with a games area downstairs too, meaning you never need to leave the hostel if you don’t want to.
All in all, we learnt a lot throughout the 3 tours within two days. 90% of the information we have written in this post has been from memory, which goes to show how incredibly informative information is jam-packed into each of these tours. Walking tours are such a great method of connecting with a country. You leave gaining a huge insight into its past. We regret not taking the opportunity to do walking tours in other places we have visited, such as Budapest or Prague. Who knows what we would have learnt?

Free Walking Tours of Cape Town
By Michelle de Bruin
Explore the city’s landmarks with a knowledgeable guide.
The Mother City ’s CBD is steeped in history, with exquisite cultural and historical landmarks that are central to her narrative. With these free walking tours of Cape Town, you’ll discover the city’s fascinating story, and be able to marvel at some of the impressive architecture, dating back to 1666.
Pre-booking is not necessary – just pitch up at the meeting point (Fideli’s, Piazza on Church Square) where a friendly and knowledgable guide will escort you along your chosen route (options include The Bo-Kaap Tour, Historic City Tour and the Apartheid to Freedom Tour). You’ll pick up some of the local lingo, while being shown local watering holes along the way.
The walk is about 90 minutes long, so wear comfortable shoes, and take water. (And even though it’s free, you’re welcome to tip your guide if you think he/she did a good job.)
Choose from four walking tours
Historic City Tour: Departs twice daily from Fideli’s, Piazza on Church Square (11am and 2pm). This tour provides a glimpse into the Cape’s rich and chequered past, and includes a visit to Cape Town’s oldest living citizen, as well as a stop by Parliament, Green Market Square, the Castle of Good Hope, and the Slave Lodge.
Bo-Kaap Walking Tour: Departs twice daily from Fideli’s, Piazza on Church Square (11am and 2pm). The district is a great place to find hidden gems, such as Atlas Spice Trading Centre, where an assortment of authentic Indian and local spices can be found. Other highlights include a stop by the old Tailor’s House, and Auwal Masjeed – the oldest mosque in South Africa.
Apartheid to Freedom Tour: Departs twice daily from Fideli’s, Piazza on Church Square (11am and 2pm). You can’t understand South Africa without understanding apartheid. You’ll hear stories of suffering and struggle, but ultimately of hope and freedom, as this tour takes you past landmarks such as St Georges Cathedral, where Archbishop Desmond Tutu led a mass anti-apartheid demonstration of around 30 000 people; the Cape High Court and Apartheid Benches; and the famous District Six.
Customised Tours: There’s no shortage of sights and sounds in the Mother City. Whether it’s a fascinating glimpse into the history of diamond mining, a tour of local art galleries, or an enlivening Djembe drumming session; just let the tour guides know your interests, and they can provide a custom-made tour just for you. You will have to book in advance for this particular tour though.

St George’s Cathedral
St George’s Cathedral is the oldest and one of the grandest cathedrals in Southern Africa, and also the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Cape Town.
Affectionately known as “the People’s Cathedral” for its role in the struggle against apartheid, the church kept its doors open to people of all races throughout the apartheid era. Here, after Archbishop Desmond Tutu led a mass demonstration of 30 000 people in 1989, he coined the term the “rainbow nation” to describe South Africa’s diverse population.
Learn more about the cathedral’s interesting history – for example, the foundation stone was laid in 1901 by the future King George V and can be seen from the bottom of Government Avenue leading into the Company’s Garden.
South African Museum
Visit the Planetarium adjoining the South African Museum for an enriched experience.Step back into history and see more than 1.5-million items of cultural and scientific importance at the South African Museum . The museum houses a wide range – from specimens and fossils dating back over 700-million years to contemporary T-shirts.
Also visit the Planetarium adjoining the museum to learn more about the planets and stars with a virtual exhibition.
South African Jewish Museum
The South African Jewish Museum offers engaging accounts of South African Jewish history.
The South African Jewish Museum is a moving tribute to and detailed account of one of the great Jewish communities of the diaspora. The building offers visitors a poignant and moving experience with bold architectural design, interactive multimedia displays and engaging accounts of South African Jewish history.
The late former President Nelson Mandela officially opened the museum in December 2000, and you can watch the award-winning documentary Nelson Mandela: A Righteous Man screened daily. The venue also has exhibitions, including works by celebrated South African artists such as Irma Stern and William Kentridge, and by Marc Chagall.
District Six Museum
Explore the District Six Museum by yourself, or choose to be guided by a former resident.
In 1966, the South African government of the time swooped on District Six as part of its efforts to enforce apartheid, forcibly removing its occupants and declaring the area a “whites-only” zone.
Decades later, the District Six Museum is a reminder of these tragic events, but also a symbol of return and restitution to former residents and the people affected.
See an impressive collection of historical photographs, paintings, artefacts, physical remains such as street signs, books and studies, as well as audio-visual recordings from District Six, most of which were donated by former residents.
Either explore the museum by yourself, or choose to be guided by a former resident. We recommend the latter to enrich your experience at this heritage site.
Castle of Good Hope
The Castle of Good Hope was built between 1666 and 1679 by Dutch administrator Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company. The oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa, the Castle of Good Hope is located in the heart of Cape Town, opposite the Grand Parade and near the magnificent City Hall.
The Castle of Good Hope was built between 1666 and 1679 by Dutch administrator Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company, mainly as a defensive fort. In its long history, it has served as military stronghold, prison and now museum, heritage site and public gathering space.
Wander the grounds on your own or join a guided tour to learn more about how the castle was built, its history and its former occupants.

Cape Town has a bright and colorful city center that is steeped in history and culture. The city also features beautiful architecture, nearby nature and a lively entertainment district on the water. Although many of the top attractions are away from the central business district (CBD), we made time to explore the area on a Cape Town Self-Guided Walking Tour.
On our Cape Town city tour, we visited a few of the most historical places as well as some of the cultural attractions in Cape Town. While it’s possible to see many of the sights by simply walking around, Cape Town sightseeing is best done with a plan in mind. We created this useful Self-Guided Cape Town Walking Tour so that we could move at our own pace and get a true feel for the city.

Save, Pin or Bookmark our Cape Tour Walking Tour to plan your trip to South Africa!
#1 Adderley Flower Market
Start your Cape Town walk at the Adderley Street, Cape Town CBD bus stop and head south to the Adderley Flower Market.
For more than 150 years women have been selling colorful flower bouquets – making it one of the oldest markets in Cape Town. Set up in a dimly lit alley on Trafalgar Place between the Standard Bank and Golden Acre Mall, rows of stalls feature an array of fragrant and unique blossoms. Sellers are happy to create special arrangements. The Adderley Street Flower Market is open daily from 6:00am to 6:00pm.
#2 Cape Town City Hall and Grand Parade
Turn right (southwest) on Parliament and walk to Darling Street. Turn left (southeast) and walk to City Hall and the Grand Parade.
The City Hall building is used for Cape Town culture events – but it also reigns as one of the top Cape Town historical sites. The building is well-known for the balcony – from which Nelson Mandela gave his first speech after being released from prison. Constructed in the early 1900s – using mostly materials shipped in from Europe – the grand building stands out from its surroundings. It’s free to go inside, where there are stained-glass windows, marble staircases and pipe organ in the Grand Hall. Note : Cape Town City Hall is open Monday – Friday from 7:45am to 3:00pm.
The main public square on which City Hall stands is called the Grand Parade. It has been used as a marketplace, a site of political rallies and, unfortunately, an oversized, run-down parking lot with random pop-up stalls set up on the fringe.
#3 Castle of Good Hope
At the east end of the Grand Parade is the Castle of Good Hope.
Built between 1666 and 1679 as a pentagon-shaped fort for the Dutch East India Company, the castle is the oldest building in Cape Town – and in South Africa, for that matter. When the Castle of Good Hope was built, it was at the water’s edge, but land reclamation has moved the coastline to form the Cape Town Harbour.
In 1936, the fort was named a National Monument – and still serves as the center for the Cape Town military. Visitors who are interested in historical buildings in Cape Town and learning more of the Cape Town history should consider visiting the Castle of Good Hope. And, those who really want a better understanding of the history should inquire about the Castle of Good Hope guided tour. Note : Open daily from 9am to 5pm.
#4 District 6 Cape Town Museum
Walk southwest on Buitenkant Street to the District 6 Museum.
During Apartheid in South Africa in the 1970s, 60,000 residents who lived in Cape Town District 6 were forced to move from their homes. The District 6 Museum, which opened in 1994, is dedicated to remember the injustices, as well as to help build a multicultural community.
Top Tip: Join a tour to learn more about the history of slavery in Cape Town.
#5 The Company’s Gardens, Cape Town
Continue walking southwest on Buitenkant Street to Roeland Street. Turn right (northwest) and walk past St. Mary’s Cathedral to the Louis Botha Farmer warrior Statesman Statue on St. Johns Street. Turn left (southwest) and walk to Gallery Lane (right before the South African National Gallery. Turn right (north) and walk into the Company’s Gardens.
Started by a shipwrecked crew in the 1600s, the Company’s Gardens are now filled with fountains, monuments, museums and even a restaurant. Many of the rare and historic trees and plants include informational plaques and an expansive vegetable garden has been established as a reminder of how the gardens were first used. Museums in the vicinity are the South African Jewish Museum, the Cape Town Holocaust Center and the Iziko South African Museum.
#6 Cape Town Parliament
Walk the length of the Company’s Gardens and on the southeast side, see Parliament.
As one of the three capital cities of South Africa, Cape Town is the legislative capital and home to the country’s Houses of Parliament. Three historic buildings in Cape Town collectively make up the Cape Town Parliament – and date to 1884, the 1920s and the 1980s (the latter two were designed in the Neoclassical Cape Dutch style to match the original building). The Parliament buildings house the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces.
Top Tip : Visitors interested in a Cape Town Parliament Tour and attending a Parliamentary Session should inquire at the Visitors Centre entrance on 120 Plein Street.
#7 St. George’s Cathedral, Cape Town
At the north end of the Company’s Garden is the St. George’s Cathedral.
On the north end of the park is St. George’s Cathedral, an Anglican church that was heavily involved in the anti-apartheid movement. Inside, the enormous stained glass windows light up the church and the 6,000 pipe organ.
#8 Iziko Slave Lodge
To the southeast of St. George’s Cathedral is the Iziko Slave Lodge.
Built in 1679, the historic Slave Lodge (Cape Town’s second oldest building) was used to house slaves of the Dutch East India Company until the year 1811. Today, the building has been re-purposed as a Cape Town museum documenting the history of slavery in South Africa.
#9 Bo-Kaap District
Walk northwest on Wale Street to the Bo-Kaap District.
The brightly painted houses on Wale Street mark the beginning of the colorful Bo-Kaap district. The Cape Malay Quarter features many mosques and small restaurants serving Malay dishes. Although heavily visited by tourists now, in the residential area it’s common to see kids playing cricket in the street with neighborhood friends. Top points of interest in the neighborhood include the Bo-Kaap Museum and the fragrant Atlas Trading Company spice shop.
Top Tip: For a better understanding of the district, join a guide on a Bo-Kaap Walking Tour – find out more!
#10 V&A Waterfront
From the Bo-Kaap District, it’s possible to walk to V&A Waterfront, but we recommend taking a public bus or getting an Uber ride.
End your Cape Town city tour itinerary at the entertainment hub of the V&A Waterfront . The 150-year-old working harbor is packed with shops, restaurants, pubs, museums, a clock tower, Ferris wheel, helicopter rides, cruises and street musicians that all compete for the attention of visitors.
To cool off in the heat of the day, we suggest grabbing a shady spot at Quay 4 Tavern or Mitchell’s Brewery , the largest and oldest microbrewery in South Africa dedicated to making fresh, natural beer minus artificial additives.

The name is an abbreviation of ‘boven Kaap’ or ‘above the cape’. So unsurprisingly, you’ll find the neighbourhood upward from the city centre, on the slopes of Signal Hill.
Today, it’s known as one of the most Instagrammable places in the country, thanks to its pastel-colored houses and picturesque cobbled streets. This amazing tour allows you to learn about the history of one of Cape Town’s most multicultural areas. Discover some of its oldest historical buildings and learn about the culture and traditions of the local people. Bo-Kaap, a colourful, historic neighbourhood that became home to many Muslims and freed slaves after the abolition of slavery.
Along the way, visit South Africa’s first mosque, Auwal Masjid and if you are lucky, you may get a taste of the spicy ‘Cape Malay’ food.

Arena di Verona
If you're looking to add more of an experiential element to your next getaway, consider adding a world-renowned classical music event to your itinerary. It's no secret that Italy is a gateway to cultural treasures, but it's also home to three much-anticipated upcoming events. Set in three highly popular parts of the country, the following performances are a great jumping-off point for exploring new regions of Italy.
Aida at Arena di Verona
Verona Ancient Opera Festival
Known as the home of Romeo and Juliet, Verona is a picturesque city in Northern Italy. Sitting on the Adige River, the city's Old Town transports you back in time, while the 1st-century Verona Arena gives you a glimpse of Roman grandeur. This UNESCO World Heritage- designated amphitheater is also where you can experience the 101st edition of Verona's Ancient Opera Festival, set to take place between June 7th and September 7th of this year. The opera festival is considered the world's oldest and incorporates a variety of contemporary opera performers in an age-old setting. Carmen, Turandot, Aida and La Traviata are just several iconic narratives you can see live this summer. A naturally immersive art form, opera is best experienced with all five senses, and Verona makes the perfect backdrop.
Cape of Senses
NSA Warns iPhone And Android Users To Turn It Off And On Again
A 3-point cheat sheet for creating romantic chemistry—by a psychologist, goldman sachs issues astonishing bitcoin and ethereum etf prediction after price turning point.
In between catching performances, you can explore the city's historic cathedrals, stroll walkable city plazas, and even visit the famous Casa di Giulietta, or "Juliet's House". If you're looking for a romantic, private place to stay, consider booking a room at Cape of Senses, located under an hour's drive from Verona.
Overlooking sparkling Lake Garda, this adult-only spa resort offers luxury wellness experiences in gorgeous surroundings. The on-site Sense Spa invites guests to indulge in everything from saunas and pools to yoga, the spa library, and a tranquil tea corner. There is gourmet dining available within the resort. Suite options range from junior suites to sky pool suites, which offer a private pool under the stars.
Andrea Bocelli
Andrea Bocelli's 30th Anniversary Performance in Tuscany
As a top Italian destination, Tuscany is set to host Andrea Bocelli's 30th Anniversary Performance this year. The artist will perform a series of home concerts, joining forces with other well-known musicians. The performance is scheduled for July 17th and 19th in the Teatro del Silenzio, which is located in the artist’s hometown of Lajatico. The natural amphitheater where he will be performing creates an unforgettable ambience that all music lovers should experience.
The Veranda Lounge at Villa Roma Imperiale
To stay less than an hour away from the theater, book a few nights at the Villa Roma Imperiale, located in seaside Forte dei Marmi. Charming and elegant, the villa offers accommodations ranging from classic, cozy rooms to deluxe and duplex family suites. The onsite pool and gardens complete your experience along with the sea breeze.
Sudtirol Festival Merano in the Dolomites
If you're looking forward to exploring the Italian Alps, consider attending the Sudtirol Festival and making the city of Merano your homebase. Merano is known as a spa retreat and is also home to the Art Nouveau-style Kurhaus building. Doubling as a music venue, the Kurhaus will be hosting performances ranging from contemporary jazz to medieval melodies. Other venues that are part of the festival include the Kursaal concert hall, which is known for its majestic interior hall.
For a full-fledged alpine experience stay at the ALPIANA, located only 20 minutes away from Merano. This luxury destination offers multiple pools, gourmet meals, and a three-floor spa ready to meet your wellness needs. Lush and vibrant, the resort grounds make a perfect headquarters for discovering the Dolomites' mix of pastoral villages and historic cities.
Whether you're a seasoned classical music tourist or eager to learn, the three Italian regions mentioned above have a lot to offer. Already boasting an incredible history dating back to Roman times, the country keeps in step with contemporary culture while honoring the gems of its past. From the ancient echoes of amphitheaters to the smooth acoustics of iconic concert halls, all three events rely on fabulous venues. There is no better way to experience the heart of a country than through immersive experience, and live performance offers a rare glimpse into Italy's past, present, and everything in between.
