Cruising with Fred Olsen

The staff were excellent. The food was very salty with onions accompanying most dishes including salads. Awful. On sea days there were plenty of activities and the lectures were enjoyable. Lots of choice regarding tours. Due to smaller ships there was less need for tenders.

First Fred Olsen cruise

Wonderful experience overall. Premier suite so comfortable we didn't want to come home! Food excellent at all restaurants, the main dining room staff particularly helpful, noticed I had problems cutting food due to a fractured arm so meals were served ready cut! All staff, cabin, bars, reception 1st class.

A good trip with some disappointments)

We saw some great scenery and experienced very good food and (as always) very friendly and efficient service from the staff. The disappointments came from the missed ports - which Fred Olsen could not do anything about - but it led to three sailing days out and three sailing days back - which was disappointing. Could we not have found another alternative (e.g. the Isle of Man, Cork or Dublin) when Belfast became impossible? We realise that these might have involved added expense to the company, but several other passengers expressed disappointment.

Attentioned crew and nice passengers

Well behaved crew and passengers Comfortable cabin Everything well organized Excellent food A pity the shore tour (Ancient Lewis & Blackhouse) was not at level (boring guide, spots without interest)!

Great experience for a first time cruise

The staff were amazing, the cleanliness ( bathrooms cleaned twice a day)and the care to stop any infection with reminders about hand washing, might seem strange to have to remind adults about washing hands due to norovirus etc, but the ladies i witnessed not washing their hands in the bathroom????also hand gel outside restaurants. The overall experience was relaxed and entertaining and can't wait to do it all again.

Overall the usual high Fred O…but …

Overall the usual high Fred O standards:particularly the shows. But having requested a table of 6/8 I ended up at the busy edge of the dining area on a table for 4 one of whom rarely came. Boring! I have already fed back requesting better training for staff attitude to lone women guests: couples are served ahead even if my drink card has been held up first!!

Date of experience : 01 February 2024

Great all round experience

Well appointed cabin, fantastic crew especially our table waiters. Plenty of space to just sit and watch the World go by but also loads to do if you want a more active day. Fred Olsen cruises are designed for adults who don't want Karaoke, water flumes, fun fairs and drunken louts swearing everywhere. They do have live music, disco and entertainment and for those that like ballroom dancing or would like to learn they have dance hosts and daily dance sessions. We have only ever cruised with Fred Olsen and having heard from friends of our age (50's/60's) about their cruises on much bigger vessels I don't think we would try any others.

Date of experience : 25 May 2023

Food inconsistent/lack of variety

Food inconsistent/lack of variety - tea/coffee should be part of drinks package - worried about arrangements for people with disabilities (see below) After a shore visit a queue to go up the only gangway to the ship - quiet step. Five or so people without. their mobility aids standing waiting foe assistance to go aboard while crew came off. No chairs, steep gan away - they need level access if at all possible le. At least some chairs while hey wait. Quite upset about this. Crew great, entertainment great. Junior suite a disapointment.

An interesting and enjoyable cruise

The ports were all very interesting and I particularly enjoyed Tangier. I also enjoyed the activities on board. The craft tutor was excellent and the sessions on star gazing were very interesting. I was pleased to get the opportunity to see below decks and, of course, the staff were brilliant as usual. My only complaint is the fact that the space for dancing is very limited on both Bolette and Borealis which is a pity as many passengers enjoy this activity.

As a retired Merchant Navy Officer

As a retired Merchant Navy Officer I appreciate the vessals are commanded by the very competant Officers aboard. They make all the decisions on a safe passage, and are not directed by head office, this means freedom to reschedule the voyage and dodge the worst of the weather. All the crew are friendly and helpful. Food healthy, varied and well presented. Interesting lectures and and enjoyable entertainment. Varied itenaries. Good Value.

Attention to detail

Attention to detail The cabins are well appointed, with every care is taking to keep them up to standard. Even the smallest detail is of importance, the slightest niggle being taken seriously, dealt with promptly and followed up. We were in a Junior Suite and had canapés delivered to us every day between 16:30 and17:00 hours - if we away from the cabin they were delivered with a typed note that told us what the ingredients were. We are always treated as VIPs on Fred Olsen cruises and hesitate to try any other company, fearing the FOC standards would not be met!

Date of experience : 27 March 2024

Bolette is a happy ship

Bolette is a happy ship. Lots of space and places to sit during the daytime and evening. There was always some live music around the ship which contributed to a very calm and civilised atmosphere. The food was excellent and well presented. My only suggestion would be that only essential announcements are put through to the cabins, as is the norm on P&O and Princess and used to be normal on Fred Olsen. It was quite irritating to be woken up first thing in the morning by a loud announcement about where we were!

Date of experience : 13 November 2023

Fred. Olsen is a fantastic experience

The whole Fred. Olsen experience is so well done by all the crew and staff. The ship is not too big, waiting staff are superb (I always hope they get the credit and salary they deserve...) and when there are unforeseen circumstances (measures to contain bugs /bad weather) they are handled extremely well. Plus, the food is amazing! You are forced to relax and just enjoy yourself.

Excellant Cruise. Good Food, Service and Itinerary

Cabin was very comfortable and clean. All the staff were extremely helpful and polite. Although changes had to be made to the itinerary en route due to bad weather and industrial action at the Faroes, we were kept informed and alternatives were arranged. The trip to Iceland was wonderful and memorable. Fred Olsen need to be applauded for their support of the ORCA charity.

I like the smaller ships as they are much more friendly and your crew members make you feel like a person not a number. I have recommend your line to people that I have meet on other cruise lines but I still think that your's is still the top of my list, as I have just come back from a trip with P & O.

Friendly, well-run, small-size ships with a full programme of activities on board. Any problems that inevitably arise on a 101 day cruise get resolved very speedily.

Balmoral crew are the best

The crew on this ship were the most friendly and helpful people. The stewardess was patient explaining how things worked . Our waiters were efficient and ready to help in any way and the food was five star every day. The girls in Atlantic Spa were lovely, and it was great relaxing in the bookmark Cafe listening the the superb String Trio. Entertainment was good and we enjoyed the company of our fellow passengers.

The crew were such a delight especially my cabin housekeeper. They are friendly, always smiling and nothing is too much trouble for them to make your holiday perfect. The food was heaven, the entertainment was first class and there wasn't enough time to experience everything on board. I was a first time solo traveller and felt extremely comfortable and made some lovely friends. This was the first of many cruises and I can see why people become addicted.

Nothing seems too much trouble for the…

Nothing seems too much trouble for the crew on Fred Olsen ships. Within a couple if days at the most dining room staff and bar staff know you and what you like. Restaurant staff pick up on likes and dislikes and ensure you have the best of service. Cabins on Bollette and Borealis are very roomy with plenty of storage space. Intenaries are well put together and excursions give you a variety of places to visit as well as time to go it alone. The smaller number of people on board means that before long you know several new people and friendships are easily formed.

High Standard of Service

We have sailed over 200 nights on Fred Olsen ships, mainly Balmoral and Borealis. They offer a high level of service on smaller ships which aren’t brand new but feature very comfortable cabins and activities and entertainment options. Fred’s prices are not the cheapest but good value for money compared to most other cruise lines and their “all inclusive “ charges are less than most - and sometimes included free of charge. Fred’s staff are their number one attraction. Both serving and behind the scenes we have found them always welcoming and efficient.

We’ve just returned from 5 days Scenic Scotland on the beautiful Boletta. Excellent food, entertainment variety was good drinks reasonable, staff charming and helpful. Only praise. We didn’t take part in any of the organised excursions. Why you may ask? Far too expensive.

Staff were extremely friendly

Staff were extremely friendly, helpful and attentive. Food was of good quality and plentiful, however, being on a late sitting limited our enjoyment as too late to engage in the shows. Late and early dining should be alternated to give everyone the opportunity to see shows. Ship is a bit dated and rooms could do with brightening up. Found the time spent in ports was too short to really enjoy the visits. Drinks deal was good but often service in bars was slow and often felt like walking into a residential home for the elderly seeing people snoozing in the high backed chairs.

Fabulous cruise line, you won’t be disappointed

We have cruised with Fred Olsen for a number of years. The crew are fabulous, always smiling and so helpful. The itineraries are varied so there is always somewhere new we want to visit. There is a good choice of food available, always something for all tastes. Their speciality restaurants are superb and gives you a chance to try something new. There are always many onboard entertainment, lectures and activities to choose from that we are never bored on sea days. And sailing from the UK is so easy compared to the hassle of flying anywhere these days. We would most definitely recommend giving Fred Olsen Cruise Lines a try, but be warned, you will get hooked.

First cruise

It was our first cruise. It was around Scottish islands and perhaps the main thing was seeing the magnificent scenery from the sea. The logistics on the ship were amazing - how they cope with all those people who can all choose when and where to eat is mind boggling. If you make the right choices the food is good. Some of the entertainment was good and they try to cater for different tastes. The trips on shore were interesting, although they seemed a little expensive. One that my wife went on (on Harris) was very disappointing and a waste of money, in her view. The one on Orkney was excellent, partly because of the very good guide.

Azores and Eclipse

Unfortunately the weather was awful for much of the trip and we had probables with wardrobe doors coming off their runners, bathroom door would not stay open and as an adapted cabin this made life very difficult. However the staff looked after us and we had excellent speakers food as always excellent. Just felt that maintenance in the room was slow and such an expensive suite we should have had more understanding of our difficulties. The ball of my hand still hurts from having to hit the drawers to open them! Hopefully our upcoming trip to the Baltic on Borealiis will be splendid. We met on Braemer 6 years ago on a similar cruise.

Fred Olsen cruises is the perfect fit

We have been on two Fred Olsen cruises, both to Norway, first for the Northern Lights in Feb 2022 and then the fjords in May 2023 - we are about to go on our third, this time to the Adriatic. Fred Olsen are perfect for us, smaller ships, personal service and everything we have experienced has been 1st Class. People have suggested other Lines but we just love the experience and do not wish to cloud our opinion of cruising by switching to someone else.

Had a great cruise trip to Iceland

Had a great cruise trip to Iceland - excellent itinerary and well looked after on the sea days with lots of new hobbies and activities to keep us entertained. The ship and its staff were amazing too keeping us well fed and entertained

Stormy Weather

On the way back from Canada we hit storms with winds between force 7 to force 11. This was over a period of 5 days.To say the seas were horrendous is an understatement & I am aware that there were ships damaged in that weather event. Two ports were closed to us including Belfast, where we had hoped for a quiet night. Instead, we went to the Scottish Islands for shelter arriving in Belfast the next morning when it eventually opened. However, the Captain & crew were incredible & kept us all informed, fed & entertained in the most difficult of circumstances. The skill & seamanship required in those conditions was immense & I cannot praise the crew highly enough.

Date of experience : 20 October 2023

the main disappointment was the weather and the poor value of the trips we did…

the main disappointment was the weather which the company could do nothing about and due to the amount of days at sea we had to spend a lot of time inside. we did two trips, Saint-Emilion village and vineyard by little train,we thought this was very poor value and the guide spent to much time in a church giving very little time to see the village. Honfleur trip to the Calvados Distillery was a complete waste of time again the distillery tour and the Calvados and cheese tasting was pathetic. The food on board was very good and the Ballindalloch dining room staff were very good we were on table 120 Paulo and Nathaniel were excellent and made having dinner a pleasure. The entertainment was very good and very professional. Our room 8012 was look after by Miriam who did an excellent job

First time cruisers

First time cruisers. Sooooo much easier than flying. Check in , minutes not hours! Holiday begins as soon as car is parked up. Unexpectedly wined and dined as soon as on board. Suite dreams balcony room excellent. Lovely to walk around ship on deck 7 , doing 4 circuuts to complete a mile. Quality food and drink. Staff friendly and attention to all details. Can please self as to to be alone or socialise. Shows fantastic and wildlife talks. Swimming pools warm. We were v lucky with weather , 28c in Norway. Briskale troll cars trip fantastic, but we had prefect weather to see glacier and views so well. Advise need small bag for last few items needed late pm early am before disembarking, as you put luggage outside your room by 2am. Breakfast given before early am disembarking.

Med cruise on the Balmoral

The guest entertainers were very good unlike the resident team who were mediocre. The assistant entertainment manager was better than the entertainment manager and we know others agreed. The service in the restaurant was a little slow but the housekeeping staff were very good as usual. On excursions the leaders need to take into account the slowest walkers and set the pace accordingly, not use their own pace when they are a lot faster.

A perfect cruise an a super friendly ship

This was an outstanding cruise We have taken numerous cruises on large ships but none compare with this Balmoral cruise. The smaller ship was so perfect in every way. Without exception all the crew were polite, friendly and helpful. The dining options were excellent and Julias was super efficient, polite and friendly. The evening dancers and singers provided uplifting enery packed performances, very talented and professional. A very clean, comfortable and beautiful ship. We would highly recommend and look forward to a future Fred Olsen experience. Thank you to everyone.

Love cruising with Fred Olsen

Cruising with Fred Olson is a wonderful experience. The service and attention to detail provided by all crew members is second to none. The waiters in our restaurant were exceptional. Great choice of food and drink and exceptional service. Lots of outside space and communal areas but always able to find a quiet corner if we wanted to be alone. Enjoyed our destinations very much and have already booked our next cruise with Fred.

Fabulous cruise

We enjoyed our Fred Olsen cruise very much. It’s like a big family with very friendly staff in all roles throughout the ship. We enjoy the smaller number of passengers creating a more intimate atmosphere on the ship. The captain was excellent and engaged with passengers on a very informal level and was often seen around the ship. We enjoyed the captains daily announcements too with quotes is great wisdom. Overall a great experience.

Fred Olsen Norwegian Ffords Cruise

This was mine and the wife's first Cruise it was a bucket list thing for my 60th. I can not praise the whole experience of being cared for by Fred Olsen and the staff on the Balmoral, from start to finish they looked after us . Pulled up in the carpark they take your luggage out of the car and the next time you see it it's in your cabin , you then stroll to the departure lounge to get your passport checked and then board the ship . They look after your everyday needs , food delicious, staff incredible and sites amazing . We cruised to Norwegian Ffords. This was our first cruise experience and won't be our last , WELL DONE FRED OLSEN , *****

Very good but some niggles.

Very good embarkation and disembarkation process. Our junior suite was very comfortable, lots of space to put clothes etc. but we felt that the chairs could have been more comfortable. We paid £10 per day for use of Wi-Fi . At that price, we expected better coverage. We struggled to get a signal in the cabin. The system needs serious upgrading if they continue charging so much. Overall the cruise, the staff and food etc was good.

Cuising with Fred.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is my preference cruise company because of the smaller ships. Since 2010 I had the privilege of enjoying 17 cruises with Fred. Unfortunately, 8 booked cruises have been cancelled during Covid. Because I'm in the middle of building a new house and moving over, I had to postpone my next cruises. I loved Boudicca and still love sailing with Balmoral. My latest cruises were to the Baltics back-to-back to the north of Norway. It only is a pity that there are so little cruises sailing from Dover nowadays.

Date of experience : 22 June 2023

We had a very enjoyable cruise but…..

We had a very enjoyable cruise. As always the crew were friendly and provided excellent service. Balmoral has limited indoor public space compared to Bolette and Borealis and it was apparent that the ship was full - on occasion it felt overcrowded and it was difficult to find somewhere to sit. The room reserved for bridge seems a very unused space which could be utilised more productively. In a few places we felt that Balmoral was now looking a little tired - in particular the Palms Cafe needs a revamp. The speakers and entertainment were generally very good. Always a good experience with Fred Olsen😊
