Maldives Full Day Tours & Excursions (w/ Price & Itinerary)

The Maldivian archipelago is one of the most fascinating countries in the Indian Ocean. Comprising 200 inhabited islands and about a thousand other isles, this tropical nation is a stunning choice for honeymooning and family holidays alike. Maldives Islands presents you with the many full day tour options. From snorkelling  to private sandbank tours, Maldives full day tours impress you with its wide and diverse range. Clean sands, crisp air and azure lagoons await you everywhere you go in The Maldives.

Maldivian vacations are largely spent luxuriating in opulent resorts, but you can get a glimpse of the natural beauty of Maldives when you set a day aside specifically for this. Take a look at some full day tours that let you see coral reefs underwater, sample local cuisine on a sandbank, indulge in various water sports, and lots more.

When in Maldives, do not miss snorkeling. The crystal clear waters of the relatively shallow lagoons are just perfect for this. If you have never snorkeled before, book a full day snorkeling trip with the experts to do this in a safe and fun atmosphere. Snorkeling is also doable for those who cannot swim, even though you get an edge if you are a swimmer.

The 3-Point Snorkeling Package includes a speedboat ride to various diving sites in The Maldives where the concentration of corals, reef fish and other pelagic fauna is high. The boat is docked at the diving point and all the participants are asked to jump off and into the water one by one.

Your snorkeling instructor doubles up as an underwater photographer to take amazing shots of you posing with clown fish, manta rays and turtles. One of the diving spots is dedicated to turtle watching. It is advisable not to touch the turtles as they bite when troubled, but you can safely swim alongside these reptiles.

The full day snorkeling tour in The Maldives includes a halt on a deserted sandbank where pre-packed Maldivian lunch is served to you. You can laze on the beach and enjoy an hour there before you get back on the boat for your next dive.

#5 Boating Excursion with Dolphin Watching, Fishing & Barbeque

Fishing in Maldives Header

Get off the private island and extend your Maldivian vacation to the waters with a full day boating excursion. Depending on your budget, you can go on a small speed boat with other participants or hire a personal yacht for a special time with your loved ones.

Over the course of the boating trip, you will be taken through sea routes which intersect with the paths followed by various types of dolphins. Keep your eyes peeled for the bottlenose dolphins and spinner dolphins, which are the easiest to sight from about 20 species which are found in The Maldives.

These friendly mammals travel in pods, and it is quite delightful to see them leap in a coordinated fashion as they jump out of the water surface to catch their breath. If you get close enough, you will also be able to hear them communicate with their squeals.

The full day excursion also exposes you to the art of angling. Fishing , as assumed by many, is not an activity that can be accomplished very quickly. One needs patience and some skill to make a catch. Learn from your local instructor how to use the traditional Maldivian style of pole and line to catch some seawater fish such as grouper, snapper or jack.

The most interesting and rewarding part of this one day tour is the opportunity to cook and eat your catch of the day! When it is time for sunset, you will be taken to a sandbank for the ultimate beach barbeque experience. Along with the fish you have caught, you will be served other delectable seafood and grilled vegetables to end the evening on a high note under a starlight night sky.

#6 Private Island Luxury Resort Hopping

Full Day Private Island Luxury Resort Hopping

It is no secret that staying on a private island resort will burn a hole in your pocket. Some of the most premium 5-star resorts can cost over a thousand dollars a night! However, tasting the sweet life of luxury should not remain just a dream for the budget traveller. With a full day tour of various opulent private island resorts , you can get a first-hand experience of tropical extravagance.

Choose from a number of resort hopping tours which take you to sought-after properties such as Cinnamon Dhonveli, Olhuveli Beach and Spa , Taj Exotica , etc. The packages are priced from USD 75 to USD 350 per person for the full day tour, depending on the services and the resort you choose.

The rate works out to be more economical than actually living on those islands for a couple of days or more. Your package includes a speedboat ride to your private island of choice, and access to the resort’s public swimming pool and changing rooms. You also get time on their pristine beaches and the shallow reef in the surrounding lagoon. This is ideal if you wish to snorkel and discover the house reef of some of these gorgeous private island resorts in Maldives .

Most of the resort hopping tours include a lavish all-you-can-eat lunch buffet. Relish the flavours of Maldivian seafood , Thai curries, Chinese dumplings, Indian spices, Japanese teppanyaki, Italian starters, Spanish tapas, Mexican entrees, French desserts, and more. You will also be able to order preparations of your choice from the live counters and taste the fresh tropical fruits from the salad bar.

Certain private island trips also let you enjoy activities from the resort’s own dive centre. Grab your chance to go canoeing , stand-up paddle boating, or even surfing close to the shore. You may ask for room tours if you’re curious to see how grand their overwater villas or beach suites are. Perhaps, a glance into the plush interiors and the sprawling sundecks will make you want to book your next vacation there?

#7 Full Day Whale Shark Tour

Full Day Whale Shark Tour in Maldives

Beginning early in the morning, your trip to swim with a whale shark will stretch late into the afternoon as you will be taken to the South Ari Atoll . The atoll happens to be one of the best places to sight this extant species which is the largest fish in the world.

Whale sharks are a type of carpet shark which have an attractive pattern on their body. This giant filter-feeding fish can be as long as 62 feet, dwarfing any human in comparison! Even though they weigh as much as 19,000 kg, their unique design helps them swim without sinking, with a little help from the ocean’s buoyancy.

Your full day whale shark tour includes the speedboat ride to ferry you to the diving spot and bring you back to the island where you will be boarding from. The tour usually begins from the public island of Maafushi . Snorkelling equipment will be provided to you. However, if you are more comfortable with the modern breathable snorkelling masks, carry your own by all means.

Foot fins help considerably in giving you speed and agility underwater, but you will be fine even without those. Lycra or sweat-wicking clothing is recommended in the absence of a regular diving bodysuit or swimsuit. Cotton-based clothes tend to weigh you down, and also become cumbersome once you are back on the boat.

The snorkelling instructors will teach you the basics of snorkelling and also take plenty of photos and videos of you with the whale shark. These will be shared to you as soon as you’re back to the island. This full day trip will undoubtedly make you hungry, and there is provision for lunch, apart from fruits, soft drinks and water to keep you hydrated throughout the day. Towels are also provided.

#8 Full Day Vaavu Atoll Exploration

Full Day Maldives Vaavu Atoll Exploration

Vaavu Atoll is home to the longest natural walkway in The Maldives. This thin strip of white sand, with cerulean waters on either side, on the local island of Fulidhoo makes for an awesome backdrop for photography. Some tour providers carry a drone to get unbelievably fabulous aerial pictures of you on the island walkway. The full day exploration begins at 8:30 AM and goes on until 4:40 PM.

Activities include snorkelling and lunching on the sandbank. Vaavu Atoll is special also because its reef ecosystem is home to the giant trevally, a large jack fish which can weigh up to 80 kg. You will also be able to spot the threatened nurse shark which is generally harmless, but has a sharp set of teeth for defensive protection.

To get your endorphin levels up, you will have the thrill of swimming with dolphins as well! This mammalian species is very friendly, and your snorkelling guides are always there to help you get over your fears. The Vaavu Atoll excursion is inclusive of lunch, snacks and soft drinks.

Apart from the full day tours listed here, you can do a lot more in The Maldives. Whether it is walking tours of public islands, marine conservation, mangrove excursion, scuba diving or other water sports , there is no dearth of experiences for the traveller who likes adventure . These tours are never too crowded as they generally only accept up to 20 participants.

I have done many tours literally around the world, but this tour was one of the best tours I’ve ever had, and here’s why: They truly care about the environment . My guide Archie was honest, on time, responsive, educated, and genuinely passionate about preserving the Maldives. He was perfect for the job

Dave Trucker

It was a really insightful look at the culture and environment of the Maldives, which was a world away from all inclusive luxury resorts. I learnt a lot about reefs and the huge climate and plastic challenges facing the islands. All in all, the guides and people in the group made it a lot of fun, the sea and sea life were stunning and I came back more relaxed than I’ve been for years!

Marta Marinelli

One of the most unforgettable travel experiences to date. There is a whole other side to the Maldives that can and should be explored, far away from the outdated resorts holiday which produce unfair tourism leakages. Being able to experience the local islands, and the impact that local responsible travel can have on local communities and their fragile islands ecosystem was truly inspiring.

TripAdvisor Reviews

I could not have done this trip without Secret Paradise! As tourism outside of resorts, is relatively new to the Maldives, logistics/transfers/directions are still a bit unclear.

Maldives Cruise

group of friends on a cruise in the Maldives

Deep blue everything

The 26 postcard-perfect atolls in the Indian Ocean that make up the Maldives are so pristine they may seem too perfect to be true. Lying 700km (434 mi) southwest of Sri Lanka, the low-lying coral islands are nothing if not isolated, and the 1,200 islets, secluded lagoons, and crystal blue waters have made it a place of pilgrimage for scuba divers from around the world. Unfortunately, as much of the country is within reach of rising sea levels (the highest point is about 2m (6.6 ft) above sea level), the country is in danger of shrinking. For the time being however, paradise is still available – for a price. Make sure you have lots of room on your credit card, as prices can be sky-high.

Love the hotel! Pick up was waiting for us. Everyone pleasant and helpful.
We are just finishing our Best of Sri Lanka and Maldives tour. The Sri Lanka itinerary was perfect. We saw and experienced so many things: stunning temples, majestic scenery, a beautiful beach, an old Dutch fort, etc. But it was our guide, Sasika who made the trip spectacular. I didn’t expect the tour to be just my husband and myself but it worked out great. Sasika was very easy going and fun to be around. He was always generous with advice and recommendations (and he found the best restaurants). He was always there for us, which really made our time in Sri Lanka great. The Maldives was beautiful. The flight was fine and we met up with the representative easily but to be honest, the hotel, Kaani Grand Seaview, was only ok. It would have been great if we were in our 20s but not so much when you are in your 70s. The people were nice, the beach was across the street, but the air conditioning just couldn’t handle the hot and humid weather (the maintenance person checked it and it got alittle better but it was never comfortable in the room). And because we had an early flight (9:40 am) and the hotel’s earliest transfer was 8 am, we were going to have to pay for our own speed boat transfer so we just moved to a hotel near the airport for the last night. Great hotel with working air conditioning- pure bliss. There was a beach also across the street and In truth, Hulhumale was more interesting to walk around than Maafushi. But I do highly recommend this tour company, especially for tours in Sri Lanka. They were very quick to respond to any question I had prior to arriving and Sasika followed up on any question once we were on the tour. I would definitely use them again.

Really enjoyed it! Good boat, good food, great snorkelling and also the CEO helped me so I could do a dive instead of snorkelling one of the days which I really appreciate. Could skip the beach clean up, not that its not needed but after collecting several of bags with trash the bags where just left on the island. Just left us all with a bad feeling, first of all seeing all the trash and then collecting as much as we could, was so much left though, just to leave it on the island in the end 🤷‍♀️. BUT the tour was great!
I love the Maldives and really liked Sri Lanka. I'd return (and may) in a heartbeat. The tour "leaders" were top-notch. The food, good, plentiful and inexpensive. Accommodations and transportation were very good. 4.5/5.

Quite an amazing adventure on Maldives made possible with care of the ecosystems and support to the Maldivian people. My guide, Archie/Muhamed was the best guide anyone could ever have in seeing and enjoying the beauty of Maldives. His connections with Maldivian people made my trip comfortable, convenient and an adventure to treasure. Would love to do it again with my family! Thank you so much Archie and Ruth!!

We had stayed at a fabulous hotel which is very conveniently located, has good ambience, neat and clean with very co-operative staff. The food quality is also very good. All the transfers went smooth without waiting and we had great excursions with snorkelling and island hopping, we've seen beauty of Maldives and had a wonderful time relaxing. We added Male sightseeing on our request to make our experience in Maldives even better and Paylesstoursindia arranged us all the extras without any problems. Finally, the price of the tour is reasonable in comparison with all those expensive resorts. Many thanks and best wishes.
My partner and me had amazing holidays in astonishing Maldives that we'll never forget. If you seek full relax in a really beautiful place and feel luxury on a decent level this adventure is for you. Beautiful stay in both beach and water villa was exactly what we needed to recharge our battery. The hotel staff, transfers, meals and accommodation was great and nothing to complain about. That was definitely a tour to remember.

A huge highlight was meeting and chatting to a Buddhist monk who we met at one of the temples. Standing on top of breathtaking Sigiriya Lion Rock in the early morning. Also swimming with turtles, rays and amazing bright fish in the Maldives.
It was the most amazing trip I’ve been on in 40 years of travel

I don’t think I got my money’s worth, the only good thing was our guide, reefs and warm ocean. Let’s talk about hotels that we had to stay in four different islands they all were miserable cheap hotels some of them we had to get in from a dark alley, even we requested hand soap never received it from any of the motels they can not possibly be more than $30 a night We only went to cafes never a decent restaurant. The last island we went was Gulhi I still don’t know why we were there, absolutely nothing to do no reef no snorkeling all we did stay in the motel. THE ONLY ISLAND I WILL RECOMMEND IS MAAFUJI. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY IN ANY OTHER ISLANDS. ANY CARIBBEAN ISLAND HAS WHAT MALDIVES HAS MINUS 72% HUMIDITY
I loved this trip. Not just the fact that it was in the stunning Maldives but our guide Zaff was just amazing. He made everything run smoothly with his easy going and humorous personality. The activities that were included were all really well put together and the trip was good value. I would definitely recommend this trip to others. Can't wait to get back to the beautiful Maldives - I miss you...

Tour had great mix of activities included, plus enough free time to relax. Coco (tour manager), and team at our guest house - Lily Rest were amazing! Always available to help with any assistance needed. Hope to go back to Maldives to visit more islands in future.
The mathaveri Inn manager was 17 years old and not very organized. Does not show up on time and very detached.

Went on the tour late March. What an amazing trip. Everything was 11/10. Lucas is wonderful. Can’t recommend enough. Would love to go back to the Maldives one day!! Xx
I did the Maldives Indy Escapes tour and it was perfect!!! Maldives isn't really an easy country to explore as a solo traveller or without spending thousands a day... This is absolutely the way to do it! Highlights: - Maldives is GORGEOUS. The water is even better than it looks on Instagram. (We had perfect weather!) - The itinerary is very well thought out and found it logical and a good mix. This is definitely a tour for water babies! - I did all the optional extras and all were worthwhile. -Hotels were comfortable, clean and basically on the beach - Group dynamics suited me perfectly - average age around 33. 75% female, 60% solos, 65% Australians (rest mainly UK/US), all well travelled and focused on adventure more than partying. -Price: I spent $2100 total in the week (tour, extras, food, all in) which is amazing for the Maldives. - Guide: Lucas is the guide and owner and you can feel the extra passion and care that goes into guiding for your own business. Some considerations: - Weather would have been a major factor. We were lucky to have only perfect days... If not a little hot!(Pack double the amount of sunscreen you think you need) - Maldives is a Muslim country - there is NO alcohol outside of resorts (which is not where we stay) I would absolutely recommend this Maldives tour - it was a perfect week in paradise and everything I hoped for and more. I would absolutely do another tour with Indy Escapes in the future- it's the perfect group travel solution for solo travellers in their 30s.

This experience takes the hassle out of planning a trip to the Maldives. You are picked up from the airport and boat transfered to the Island with hotel. Hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. We had great sea view rooms. The included half day with lunch tour is great experience. The included buffet breakfast and dinner also great. Through the hotel you can book more adventures to do with your extra days or you can relax in the hotel pools or private beaches. The choice is yours.
The chosen hotels in this tour except Maldives were very poor in quality. The cottages in the resorts in Dambulla was so bad, the first one they put us in was with lots of mildew and mold. They transferred us to another cottage which was smelling so bad I had to wear a face mask to sleep. I got sick the following day with sinus and lung congestion that made me cough so badly I was feeling awefull for several days. My husband also got sick. Mr C. Silva our guide/driver knows about it. Being on restricted diet, the choices of food that was offered me was very limitted, only 2 kinds of fish- king fish and tuna otherwise I had to pay extra. Over all the tour was mediocre.

MALDIVES ON A BUDGET: Travel Guide & Itineraries

MALDIVES ON A BUDGET: Travel Guide & Itineraries

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

The forecast was sunny, but it was raining when we landed in the Maldives. Naturally, I began to worry about the coming days. I didn’t come all the way here to see grey clouds looming over gloomy seascapes. The thoughts of shallow waters gently swaying below iconic water bungalows that these islands have been known for started to drift away.

But sometimes, the universe has a way of surprising us.

The next morning, we were greeted by the sun, shining above the ivory beach. It would never rain again at any time during our stay.

The Maldives is one of those countries I never imagined I would be able to visit. If you asked me ten years ago if I would like to go to the Maldives, I would probably laugh in your face not because there’s something wrong with the idea of being there but because I knew it would never ever happen. Even the me of five years ago, someone who was just starting to travel blog, would have never guessed. At the time, there were only three things that I knew about the Maldives:

  • It is an archipelagic nation in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
  • It has a lot of private luxury resorts that I could never afford.
  • It is expensive to go and stay there.

But like I said, the universe has a way of surprising us. Before I knew it, I was sitting on a wooden platform, trying to dip my toes on the most turquoise lagoon I had ever seen in my life. Maldives was never a dream for me, but when I was there, I felt like I was living in one.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Understanding the Maldives

Beaches are what tourists come to the Maldives for, but you need to ask yourself what type of beach holiday you want to enjoy here. As far as cost is concerned, there are two ways of doing this: budget and luxury.

Olhuveli Island

For me to explain that better, I need to tell you more about the islands. Located southwest of India and Sri Lanka, the Maldives is a tropical country, made up of 26 coral atolls that fragmented into 1,192 islands, only 200+ of which are inhabited. Tourism powers its economy. In fact, 80+ of the inhabited islands are exclusive luxury resorts, designed to attract tourists.

Where to Stay in the Maldives

So basically, there are two types of islands here: private and public. The public islands, also called “local islands”, are those inhabited, meaning there are locals living there. This also means that there are establishments available to everyone such as grocery stores, tour agencies, shops, etc. The private islands are usually occupied by luxury resorts, most of which are open only to their guests and staff. Some of these private islands are open to non-guests who are staying elsewhere but on a day tour. (Will discuss this later.)

Hulhumale

One of the key differences between the local and private islands other than the cost is that most restrictions do not apply to the latter.

Staying at a Private Island Resort

If you’re after luxury and privacy and you don’t mind spending much on this trip, you might want to consider staying at an exclusive resort. This is a good option for honeymooners and those on romantic getaways.

Exclusive resorts come in all forms, too. Some charge thousands of dollars per night (the likes of Four Seasons). But those in the lower end of the spectrum are slightly more affordable. For example, Fihalhohi Island Resort Island Resort and Olhuveli Beach and Spa Resort offer beach rooms for only 200 USD (low season) and 300 USD (peak season).

Iconic water bungalows

Most exclusive resorts have two major types of accommodations: beach/land rooms and overwater bungalows (water villas). Of course, staying at a water bungalow looks tempting, but they are usually the priciest rooms. Those on the beach are much cheaper.

If online users are to be believed, here are the 6 best resorts that are on the lower end of the budget spectrum.

Search for more: Maldives Hotels

I stayed at Olhuveli for two reasons: price and amenities. Olhuveli just looks a lot better in pictures and seems to offer a lot more. I was able to snag a limited discount via Agoda and paid only 177 USD per night (including all taxes) for our beach room, which is considerably lower than the cheapest room in Fihalhohi.

But before you book, here are a few notes to consider:

  • Don’t take published rates at face value . Most do not include service charges, GST, and other taxes, a total of 23% of the published rates. AIRPORT TRANSFER isn’t included either!
  • Check the airport transfers arrangement. For some resorts like Olhuveli, booking airport transfers with them is mandatory . At Olhuveli, transfers are via a speedboat, which costs 210 USD roundtrip per person. (That’s still low compared to other resorts requiring seaplane transfers at 500 USD.) But not all resorts are like that. With Fihalhohi, transfers can be arranged elsewhere, which means cheaper options.
  • Consider your meal options . Being in a private island means your only food source is the resort’s free breakfast, restaurants, and in-room dining service. Expect them to be overpriced, too. Rooms may be booked full-board, half-board, and bed-and-breakfast.
  • Consider your tour options, too . Being at an exclusive resort means you can only hire them for your touring needs, and their tour rates are much higher than those outside.

Staying in a Local Island

But if you’re budget conscious, it’s best to stay in one of the local beaches or in areas near Male, the capital, and just go island-hopping from there. The public beaches here are gorgeous, too! And staying here means you have access to more restaurants and accommodations. There are guesthouses and lodges that offer rooms for as low as 30 USD in these areas.

UI Inn in Hulhumale

The best part is, from these beaches, you can hire a boat or a speedboat to visit other islands on a day tour, even some of those that are considered private and exclusive.

Here are some provincial inhabited islands that are popular among tourists:

  • Maafushi in South Male Atoll. This has become a tourism hub over the past years
  • Thulusdhoo in Kaafu Atoll
  • Fulidhoo in Vaavu Atoll
  • Guraidhoo in Thaa Atoll
  • Hulhumale . If you’re looking for accommodations near the airport (just 10 minutes away). I stayed at UI Inn (UI Hotel) in Hulhumale on my first night (around 40 USD per night) because my flight arrived late in the evening. Some hotels offer island hopping and diving tours and watersport activities, but there’s not much action here, to be honest.

If you choose to stay at a guesthouse or inn in a local island, prepare to shell out 50-100 USD per night. For lodges and inns, try booking with Agoda and HostelWorld. For guesthouses, try AirBnB.

Check out rates here: Maldives Hotels

Best Time to Visit the Maldives

December to April is considered “high season,” with the December-February period being its peak. This period is when the most favorable weather happens. Expectedly, it is also during this time that most tourists flock the islands. The downside: higher prices of accommodations, transfers, and tours, especially during Christmas and New Year.

Hulhumale Beach

May to November is considered “low season” — rates are at their lowest — but storms are likely. For some reason, the prices rise again in August, most likely because of European summer break.

How to Get to the Maldives

Malé International Airport (formally known as Ibrahim Nasir International Airport) on Hulhulé Island is the primary gateway to the Maldives. It is connected to a number of airports by several commercial airlines. But if you’re coming from Southeast Asia, you can connect in the following cities through these low-cost carriers:

  • Singapore – Scoot
  • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – AirAsia

You may also connect in Colombo, Sri Lanka, via Sri Lankan Air.

Here’s a list of cities that you can fly to or from Male (as of July 2016):

Abu Dhabi, UAE – Etihad Airways Bangalore, India – Air India Bangkok, Thailand – Bangkok Airways, Maldivian, Mega Maldives Beijing, China – Beijing Capital Airlines, Mega Maldives, Changsha, China – Maldivian Chengdu, China – Maldivian, Sichuan Airlines Chennai, India – Air India, Maldivian Chongqing, China – Maldivian Colombo, Sri Lanka – China Eastern Airlines, Emirates, flydubai, Korean Air, Sri Lankan Airlines, Mihin Lanka Dhaka, Bangladesh – Maldivian Doha, Qatar – Qatar Airways Dubai, UAE – Emirates, flydubai Frankfurt, Germany – Condor Fuzhou, China – Maldivian Guangzhou, China – China Southern Airlines Hong Kong – Cathay Pacific, Mega Maldives Istanbul – Turkish Airlines Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – Mega Maldives Kochi, India – SpiceJet Koror, Palau – Mega Maldives Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – AirAsia, Mega Maldives Kunming, China – China Eastern Airlines London, UK – British Airways Macau – Mega Maldives Moscow, Russia – Aeroflot Nanjing, China – Maldivian Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Saudia1 Seoul-Incheon – Korean Air Shanghai-Pudong – Mega Maldives, Shanghai Airlines Singapore – SilkAir, Singapore Airlines, Scoot Thiruvananthapuram, India – Air India, Maldivian Tokyo, Japan – Mega Maldives Wuhan, China – Maldivian Xi’an – Maldivian

How to Get to your Resort or Hotel from Male Airport

  • Airport to Private Resort . If you’re staying at a private island resort, check if you are required to book airport transfers with them. If not, good for you, you can find cheaper alternatives especially if you will be staying at a local beach first.
  • Airport to Hulhumale . You may travel by bus, which runs from 6am-2:30am except on Fridays (no bus all day) and Saturdays (no bus from 12:00-13:00). Fare is 20 MVR (1.3 USD). You can also take an airport shuttle to your hotel in Hulhumale, which costs USD7.5.
  • Airport to Male . Go to the dock near the domestic terminal. There’s a ferry going to Male every 10-15 minutes. Fare is around 10 MVR.
  • Airport to Maafushi . Make your way to Male (see instructions above). From the Male Port you may choose to take another ferry (Fare 3.25 MVR) or take a taxi (25 MVR) to Vilingili Port. From Vilingili, board the ferry to Maafushi (22 MVR) which leaves at 3pm daily (except Friday). There’s another ferry that operates on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday and leaves Male at 10am. (53 MVR, 3.5 USD)
  • Airport to Thulusdhoo . Go to Male (see instructions above) then take a taxi to MarryBrown Restaurant. Opposite the restaurant, you will find Tharika-2, a ferry that will take you straight to Thulusdhoo Island (32 MVR). The ferry leaves Male at 3:30pm on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Thursday; 2pm on Tuesday; and 10pm on Friday.

For more information about bus and ferry schedules, visit the MTCC site .

Things to Do in the Maldives

Beach activities mostly. And the rates vary widely depending on where you would book it with. Tours offered by private resorts are a gazillion times more expensive than those you can book in a public beach like Maafushi.

Olhuveli Beach and Spa Resort

  • Go island-hopping . This is what they usually call a “full-day excursion”, and this usually includes transportation and lunch. In Maafushi, you can find day tours for as low as 50 USD and if you’re keen on checking out just one island, you can find tours for 30 USD. In Olhuveli, a private island, a similar tour costs 170 USD + taxes. But here’s a trick: find other travelers and form a group. Rent a boat and divide the cost among yourselves. That would make it a lot cheaper.
  • Visit an exclusive resort . Some private resorts are open to day trippers, but they charge an entrance fee (+ taxes). Others bundle lunch with the entrance fees. The great thing about visiting these resorts is that there are only a few tourists and it gives you a closer look at the signature water bungalows. You may rent a speedboat to get here. Rates vary depending on which island you’re visiting. But to give you an idea, in Maafushi, you can find speedboat services to Fihalhohi for 250 USD per boat, others charge 65-75 USD per head.
  • Go diving . In Maafushi, rates play within the 50 to 70 USD range. You can find some that go much lower. The Maldives is a diving paradise especially during manta ray and whale shark seasons.
  • Go snorkeling . If you don’t know how to dive, you can still witness the vibrant marine life of the Maldives. Many of the islands, even the private ones, lie close to snorkeling-friendly reefs and you can see them for FREE. We were just swimming not very far from the shore when we saw a juvenile black-tip shark and a giant sea turtle. You can visit richer and farther sites, too. Most guesthouses and resorts offer half-day snorkeling tours for as low as 50 USD.
  • Go on a fishing trip . Fishing tours are becoming more popular. Usually at 50 USD in local islands (USD 65+++ in Olhuveli).

Whatever tour you’re booking, make sure you come on time because you will be joining other tourists. You don’t want to be the cause of delay.

You may also visit other local islands from Maafushi by ferry: Fulidhoo (4 USD), Guraidhoo (2 USD). Just be extra careful trying to figure out the schedules. They can be very confusing at times.

Sample Itineraries + Budget Breakdown

By now, I hope you have decided how you want to travel Maldives and where you want to stay. Whatever you choose, I have prepared simple sample 5D/4N itineraries below, one for a cheap stay at an exclusive resort and another for a stay in Maafushi. These are sample itineraries only, feel free to change whatever. (Airfare not included.)

Not yet ready to Jump

OPTION A: Stay at a Local Island

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL IN THE MALDIVES Arrival at Male Airport Transfer to Hotel UI Inn in Hulhumale (20 MVR, 1.5 USD) Check in at UI Inn (42 USD per room) Explore Hulhumale Beach Sleep

DAY 2 – MALE CITY TO MAAFUSHI Breakfast at UI Inn (FREE) Transfer to Male City (10 MVR, 1 USD) Board the 3pm ferry to Maafushi (22 MVR, 1.5 USD) Check in at lodge/guesthouse (60 USD per room) Explore Maafushi, watch sunset

DAY 3 – DAY TOUR Breakfast (FREE) Full Day Excursion (50 USD) Dinner

DAY 4 – FIHALHOHI DAY TRIP Breakfast Travel to Fihalhohi by speedboat (65 USD) Day tour at Fihalhohi Island Resort (24++ USD, 48 if lunch is included) Back to Maafushi

DAY 5 – BACK TO MALE Breakfast Catch 7:30am ferry to Male (22 MVR, 1.5 USD) Explore Male City Transfer to Male Airport (1 USD) Bye bye

If you’re ALONE and you spend 10 USD per meal and USD 60 per night on a guesthouse in Maafushi, the total cost of this itinerary (excluding airfare) is somewhere around: 465 USD (21,855 PHP).

You can still bring down the cost drastically by skipping the Fihalhohi Day Tour and just do a snorkeling tour instead on Day 4. That would put the total cost at: 402 USD (18,894 PHP).

Another way to save is staying at a cheaper guesthouse or keeping your meals at only 5 USD.

If there are two of you traveling together, you will be dividing the cost of accommodations. That brings down the total to only 291 USD (13,677 PHP) .

OPTION B: Stay at an Exclusive Resort

While many luxury resorts charge thousands of dollars, there are cheaper exclusive resorts. One of the cheapest we found is Olhuveli Beach and Spa Resort. We booked their cheapest room at 177 USD per night (531 USD for 3 nights). It is also important to contact the resort prior to your trip and arrange airport transfers.

One thing you can do to reduce cost is to take advantage of the free breakfast buffet, which was open until 10am. If you’re not a breakfast person, have a heavy meal at around 9:30am and then have dinner at around 6:30pm. For lunch, you can have some biscuits to get you through the afternoon. Apparently they allow some food types to be brought in. (The other couple with us brought some drinks and food from the grocery store in Hulhumale and the staff did not call them out or stop them.) We should have done the same, to be honest. LOL.

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL IN THE MALDIVES Arrival at Male Airport Transfer to Hotel UI Inn in Hulhumale (20 MVR, 1.5 USD) Check in at UI Inn (42 USD) Explore Hulhumale Beach Sleep

DAY 2 – OFF TO OLHUVELI ISLAND Breakfast at UI Inn (FREE) Transfer to Airport (20 MVR, 1.5 USD) Find the Olhuveli counter (22) at the airport Board the speedboat to Olhuveli (210 USD roundtrip) Dinner (40 USD per meal)

DAY 3 – OLHUVELI ISLAND Breakfast (FREE) Swimming and lazing on the beach Dinner (40 USD)

DAY 4 – SNORKELING TOUR Breakfast (FREE) Half-day Snorkeling Tour (65 USD) Lunch, we had lunch this time, LOL (40 USD) Dinner (40 USD)

DAY 5 – DEPARTURE Breakfast (FREE) Back to the airport Meal at the airport (20 USD)

If you’re a party of two, this itinerary would cost you 755 USD (35,485 PHP) .

That still sounds too steep, but trust me, with other luxury resorts charging 1000 USD per night, that’s actually pretty low already.

This is ideal if you’re on a honeymoon or on a romantic getaway.

More Tips for the Poor Traveler

Some other things you need to consider when visiting the Maldives.

  • Visa-on-arrival is available for all nationalities. Free. There is no additional step if you’re going through Immigration; it’s practically visa-free.
  • There’s wi-fi at the airport but it will be sending your mobile number a PIN that you have to enter. Make sure your roaming (call/text) is on.
  • Get a local SIM card for only 3 USD if you must be online every time. You can top it up with 1GB+ of data for a little less than 15 USD. But most guesthouses, lodges, and resorts have free wi-fi. Internet coverage and speed in the Maldives are actually pretty impressive.
  • The Maldives is an Islamic nation and they prohibit or restrict certain items. Here are things you cannot bring into the country: religious idols, materials offensive to Islam, pornographic materials, pigs and pork products, narcotics, and psychotropic substances. Alcohol and spirits are restricted. My companion who came from Japan had a bottle of sake in her luggage. She had to deposit the item at the airport for pickup at the departure area before the flight out.
  • US Dollar (USD) is widely accepted . If you’re staying at a private resort, you wouldn’t even feel the need for the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). But if you’re staying in a local island, it’s best to have some local currency. I exchanged USD 50 at the airport and still had a lot left by the time I was leaving the country.
  • Do NOT lose the receipt when exchanging money or withdrawing from the ATMs. If you lose the receipt, you will not be able to convert them back. Receipts are a requirement when selling Rufiyaa.
  • Water bungalows are the most expensive accommodations in exclusive resorts. If you’re not too keen on staying in one but would love to experience luxury holiday, just book a beach room.
  • FREE UPGRADE. Some resorts give guests staying in a beach room FREE UPGRADE to water villa when there are vacancies. We know because it happened to us. We were asked by the staff if we wanted an upgrade for free. OF COURSE, WE SAID YES RIGHT AWAY!

Things to Watch Out For

  • Time zone confusion. Male time is GMT+5. But some islands are one hour ahead of Male. I actually don’t understand this, haha. Olhuveli Island, for example, isn’t that far from Male, but it’s an hour ahead. Maybe the adjustment is less about actual location in the world map but more for practical purposes? Or maybe a marketing thing?
  • Taxes and other charges. Published rates usually do not include service charge, GST, and other taxes.Add a total of 23% to the published rate when booking hotels or eating at restaurants.
  • Mandatory transfers. Ask about the transfer arrangement before booking a room at an exclusive island resort. I cannot stress this enough. With some resorts, booking transfers with them is MANDATORY and can cost you up to 300 USD per person if by speedboat and over 500 USD by seaplane. Research the resort policies first before booking.

Pretty extensive and detailed guide, thanks for sharing! Never thought that it is even possible to enjoy Maldives with a tiny travel budget.

Jillian Dadula

I saw your comment about being worried about the weather. I’m not too sure, but when did you travel? I couldn’t find it or was just lazy to check through all specific details of your post which I will be reading through in a while.

Jen

Hi! Im planning to follow your option B this coming November! :) But are they allowing us to wear bikinis? :D and how do you book in olhuveli resort? thanks for the reply!

Yosh Dimen

Yep, it’s okay in private islands. :)

Josh Monreal

Thank you for this guide! You mentioned that the full-day excursion from Maafushi costs $50.00. Does this include the transportation and lunch? And is it 50/head?

AJ

Did you arrange your itinerary by yourself or from a travel agency? Does that include airfare? Planning to go there on March 2018 and we’ll be coming from Dubai. Can you suggest me something, please?

DIY po ito. And excluding airfare.

Mabelle

How much is your airfare that time? :)

Haziq

Im planning to go for a honeymoon in december this year. Im not quite sure how to go about making an itinerary and i happen to chance upon yours which is great. However, i plan on staying for a week at maldives. Is there anything you could recommend to do for another extra 2 days?

Looking forward to your reply. Thank you.

Arsie

Hi can we take a pic and walk down the aisle of water villas if in case i book a beach room?

Yes! You can also swim or take a dip under the villas too. :)

rubie

Planning to go there alone on budget. Approximately how much do I need to prepare for a 4 day stay? I will avail of air asia promo. Thank you.

Jilly

OMG Very Helpful! Thank you for this. Baka gayahin ko na lang ha! Thank you po! Hehehe

Sure! No prob! Enjoy the Maldives!

Jessie

Do you think it is necessary to go to the resort? Is it a must or not? :)

Hi Jessie, hard to say without any context. It really depends on why you’re flying to the Maldives. If you’re just after the sights, the beach, etc. then no, you don’t need to check in to a resort.

Most people I know though go there for the resorts (for some relaxing, pampering, etc) because they’re celebrating something.

Tommy

Hi Yoshke, where did you get the 50 USD Maafushi? I plan to stay in Male and do the day tour(s) instead of staying in a private resort. Is there a list that I can check for day tour rates? Thanks

Try Holiday Lodge or iCom Tours! :)

Ely

Wow! This is the post I am looking for. Planning to go to the Maldives later this year to celebrate my birthday. Following your tips. Thanks, guys!

Enjoy your trip!

karan soni

I was thinking where to go for travel in summer holidays and I heard about the Maldives and I googled and Land your post Its really Nice place to travel and I am sure this place has become my next holiday trip.

Susan Koh

Oh I just loved your article! Will be glad if you can share your opinion on whether a 4 days 3 night stay in Maldives is enough?

Hi Susan, if you plan on staying in just one island or one resort, yes, that should be enough. If you plan to see other places like Male or other public islands, I’d say a week. :)

Ellen Marie Sumiran

Magkano po lahat nagastos nyo? i really want to go in maldives..

It’s in the post po.

Henry Burns

Hello, This blog section it’s very useful. it’s very knowledgeable blog section… Thank You for sharing us

Veena

very well explained with examples…. i work in a travel industry but trust me if any normal person reads this they would understand a lot of Maldives the way that you have explained.

thank you Veena

Thanks, Veena!

Graceey Marz

How much is your airfare at that time?

Hi Graceey, my trip to Maldives was part of a bigger Asian tour so hindi ako from Manila galing. I flew from China, so baka mej irrelevant.

Mary Sol

Hi, is the 40 USD/meal in Oluvheli already satisfying? Does it include taxes and service charge already? Does it include drinks?

Hi Mary Sol! Di ko na mahanap pero I remember taking pics of the menu. Na-delete ko na yata. But yes, it should cover the service charge. Not sure lang if same pa rin ang presyo kasi it’s been 2 years na!

C. Randen

Could be the most thorough travel guide I have ever read! Thank you. Knowing now that I can make a Maldives trip so affordable has catapulted it to the top of my list for next vacation!

Rose - The Travel 2

Loved this helpful guide! I would like to ask if ferries to and from local islands are common. Would you need to plan beforehand as to when you’re leaving a particular island and going on another one? Thanks!

Hi Rose, you’re referring to local public ferries, right? As far as I know, they’re not that common. Usually, just one trip in a day and they’re NOT available every day of the week. We failed to get the schedules though. Some travelers choose to form a group and charter a private transfer though.

Elaine Villatoro

Amazing article and very well detailed! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Elaine!

Shimpu

Hi Yoshke… Thanks for the amazing article. Now I can plan for a budget stay in Maldives. I am planning for the first Itinerary you mentioned. You are a Masiha for poor travellers like me. I need some more info like whether we can go for resorts and have some pics in water villas and which will be the best one in terms of less expensive? Also about ferries how can I go to and fro between Islands? Do I need local currency or USD? How to plan for snorkelling or scuba dive?

It will be most helpful if you can prepare an itinerary along with timings(5 days).

Thanks in advance

Yes, there are resorts that you can visit on a day tour. Filalholi Resort is one of the most common.

There are public boats that you can take from one public island to another. If you’re going to a private island, you can arrange a tour or charter a private boat.

USD in private islands, local currency in public islands (although USD is sometimes accepted too).

Kimberly Diongco

My patner and I visited 2 islands in Maldives (Gulhi and Maafushi) on low season and I would say it’s the best decision we had. Not only we we’re able to have free watersport rides and equipments. We also stayed in a 3 star hotel (in Gulhi). We did package activities such as island hopping, snorkeling and visiting sandbanks. The most memorable one was trying the flyboarding. Our total costs on the trip excluding the plane ticket is 24,000 php only!

Thanks for sharing, Kimberly! Sounds like you had a wonderful time! :)

Michelle

Will follow this itinerary , just wanted to ask if you know some travel agency or tour agencies for day tours on some luxury resort with speedboat transfers / breakfast /lunch we can book with?. Its my birthday on 9th of Aug. and will celebrate here,I will travel alone :'( but its okay :D will be arriving there the night of Aug.5.

Hi Michelle, di po kami nakapag-keep ng contacts when we were there. :(

ELJHON

hey Yoshke, thank you for this article. its a big help for us. Anyway, Travel to Fihalhohi by speedboat (65 USD)? saan ba yung sakayan ng ferry from maafushi to fihalhohi resort? at anong schedule trip? thank you.

Shimpu

Thank you so much for the article. Very Informative… I am planning a budget trip to Maldives and hope to follow your plan A. I have some questions like —

What are the timings of public ferry from each islands ? What is the distance of local islands from Male ? And which local island will be the nearest to airport ? Is it always necessary to reach Male to travel to local islands or we can visit local islands from other local islands? If Yes what are the timings?

Hope to hear from you soon

6 great cruises that will take you to the Maldives

Gene Sloan

Located in the Indian Ocean, about 600 miles south of India , the Maldives is known for stunning white-sand beaches, impossibly clear blue waters and dozens of over-the-top luxury resorts.

If you're thinking about a Maldives trip , you'll want to look closely at these resorts, some of which promise pampering and privacy of a sort found in few other destinations on Earth. Many of them, including the recently reviewed JW Marriott Maldives Resort and Spa and the W Maldives , feature overwater bungalows -- a signature feature of high-end properties here. They often are set on their very own private islands, only reachable by seaplane or boat. Exclusivity is the watch word.

But there is another, lesser-known way to visit to the Maldives that you might want to at least consider: A cruise.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

The Maldives is definitely not a major destination for cruise ships. Only a handful of vessels visit the archipelago each year. But those that do often arrive as part of unusual, long-distance itineraries that will let you visit not just the Maldives but other destinations in the region such as the Seychelles and Sri Lanka in a single trip -- all while only having to pack and unpack once.

Cruise lines that sail to the Maldives

The lines operating cruises to the Maldives vary every year. Holland America, Oceania Cruises, Ponant and Costa Cruises are among the operators that send ships to the destination most often. Seabourn Cruise Line, Crystal Cruises, Princess Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line also have sent vessels to the Maldives recently, or have at least one ship scheduled to visit in 2020 or 2021.

In some cases, the vessels are just passing through the region while in the midst of epic, around-the-world voyages. Holland America's 1,380-passenger Amsterdam, for instance, will visit the Maldives in April as part of a 128-day, globe-circling sailing out of Fort Lauderdale , Florida, that began in January. The voyage also includes ports in South America , Australia and Africa .

Other vessels stopping in the Maldives are on Indian Ocean-focused itineraries. One example is a seven-night Costa Cruises voyage beginning in Male, the capital of the Maldives, on Feb. 22 that includes two days in the Maldives, a day in Sri Lanka, and three days in India.

The line that traditionally has offered the most in-depth voyages around the Maldives is Ponant, a France-based company that specializes in upscale, small-ship voyages to exotic locales. It sometimes runs trips that are almost completely centered on the Maldives and include visits to half a dozen of the archipelago's 26 atolls.

The pros and cons of a cruise to the Maldives

If it's a classic Maldives experience you crave -- days spent relaxing on pristine beaches, swimming, snorkeling, diving and splurging on spa treatments -- a cruise is generally not the best choice. You'll want to fly to the Maldives and spend extended time at one or more of its many island resorts instead.

In most cases, cruises that touch the Maldives only include a brief stay at the island nation -- and we mean brief! Many ships that stop in the Maldives as part of broader Indian Ocean sailings only do so for a single day. Others will stay for two days, which isn't much better if your goal is to get a true sense of the archipelago's spectacular beaches, coral reefs, diving spots and other allures. Much more rare are cruises that feature up to a week in the destination.

White-sand beaches, crystal-clear water and luxury resorts with overwater bungalows such as the Four Seasons Resort Maldives Laadaa Giraavaru, shown here, are top allures of the Maldives. (Photo courtesy of Four Seasons).

In general, cruises that include the Maldives are best for travelers who just want a quick sampler of the destination and other hot spots around the Indian Ocean such as the Seychelles and Goa, India , in one easy-to-book, easy-to-manage trip. On a cruise, you sometimes can visit three, four or even five places in the region in just a week or two, with someone else figuring out all the logistics.

The downside, of course, is that you'll get very little time in any one place.

For the coming year, the only major cruise line that has voyages with extended time in the Maldives on its schedule is Ponant. Featuring visits to half a dozen destinations around the archipelago, the line's Essential Maldives trips offer vacationers the chance to see more of the destination in a week than would be possible staying at a land resort.

Another more in-depth "cruise" around the Maldives is a multiday trip on one of several liveaboard diving boats that call the Maldives home.

Here, we take a closer look at the best cruises and cruise-like itineraries to the destination:

The "Essential Maldives" with Ponant

By far the most interesting Maldives itinerary currently on the market is the eight-night Essential Maldives routing offered by Ponant. Nearly every day of the itinerary brings a stop at a different Maldivian atoll -- six in all -- for snorkeling, scuba diving, beach-going, wildlife watching and other pursuits. The routing thus offers a broader exploration of the Maldives than you can get from staying at any one land resort or even several resorts.

The itinerary includes a day at Baa Atoll, one of the archipelago's wildest corners. Listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Baa is known for its globally significant biodiversity including stony and soft corals, reef fish, marine turtles, manta rays and whale sharks.

There's also a day scheduled for Rasdhoo Atoll, a hot spot for scuba diving and snorkeling where passengers can see hammerhead sharks as well as rays and turtles. The four other atolls on the itinerary are Noonu, Ari, Mulaku and Male.

France-based cruise line Ponant offers voyages around the Maldives on an intimate, 184-passenger vessel. (Photo courtesy of Ponant).

Ponant typically operates just a couple departures of the itinerary each year on one of its small, yacht-like Explorer Class ships. Holding just 184 passengers, the vessels are designed for off-the-beaten-path "expedition" cruising. They have Zodiac boats on board for landings and an aft marina for water sports. They famously have an underwater lounge called the Blue Eye.

Ponant currently has just two departures of this Maldivian itinerary open for booking, starting on Jan. 25, 2021, and Feb. 2, 2021, respectively. The voyages are one-way between Colombo, Sri Lanka, and Male in the Maldives. Fares start at $4,410 per person, not including $900 in port taxes. For more information, call 888-400-1082 or visit us.ponant.com .

A short visit to the Maldives with Oceania Cruises

Ships operated by upscale line Oceania Cruises typically stop in the Maldives two or three times a a year as they move between Europe, Africa and Asia.

Usually, these Oceania vessels only will stay in the Maldives for two days — typically in the capital, Male — as they make their way across the Indian Ocean. As a result, passengers on the sailings only get a tiny taste of the destination.

On the flipside, these cruises offer a chance to see not just a slice of the Maldives but also multiple places around the Indian Ocean in one relatively quick and easy trip.

Oceania's 684-passenger Nautica, for instance, will visit Male for two days in February 2021 as part of a 30-day voyage from Cape Town, South Africa, to Singapore. In addition to four stops in South Africa and a visit to Mozambique, the sailing will include calls at such Indian Ocean draws as Reunion Island, Mauritius and the Seychelles (for two days). Stops in Sri Lanka, Thailand and Malaysia round out the voyage.

Fares for the Nautica trip start at $8,299 per person, including government fees and taxes. For more information, call 855-335-2609 or visit oceaniacruises.com .

A quick trip to the Maldives with Holland America

One of the more unusual Indian Ocean voyages on the schedule for the coming year is a 20-day Holland America sailing out of Singapore.

The round-trip itinerary pairs four stops in Malaysia and a single day in Phuket, Thailand, with a multiday visit to Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

As is the case with the Oceania sailing mentioned above, the Holland America voyage only includes two days in the Maldives. But there's a twist to the visit: In addition to a day stop in the capital of Male, the stopover includes a day in Utheemu, also known as Haa Alif Atoll. The latter is rarely visited by cruise ships.

The voyage will take place on Holland America's 1,258-passenger Maasdam. It kicks off Jan. 24, 2021.

Fares start at $2,999 per person, not including up to $210 in taxes and fees. For more information, call 855-932-1711 or visit hollandamerica.com .

A diving cruise on a floating Four Seasons

If you're a diving enthusiast, one of the top ways to cruise around the Maldives is a trip on the private Maldives diving yacht operated by Four Seasons . (Yes, that Four Seasons.)

Dubbed Four Seasons Explorer, the 11-cabin catamaran sails three- and four-night trips between two Four Seasons resorts in the Maldives: The Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa and the Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru. Customers also can string together the two itineraries to create a seven-night loop.

Featuring stops in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the trips are aimed specifically at divers, with opportunities for three dives per day, plus occasional night and sunrise dives.

The 22-passenger Four Seasons Explorer operates diving cruises around the Maldives.

Four Season Explorer is billed as the fastest and most luxurious dive vessel in the Maldives. Capable of carrying up to 22 passengers, it has its own PADI Five Star diving center, comfortable cabins with en suite bathrooms, a main dining room and plush open-plan lounges. In addition to diving during sailings, passengers can sign up for spa treatments on uninhabited isles and take part in island barbecues, stargazing, sunset fishing and water sports.

Four Seasons Explorer cruises can be combined with a stay at one of the Four Seasons resorts in the Maldives to create an extended Maldivian vacation. Note that the spa at the Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru just made our list of the seven best spas in the Maldives .

Fares start at $2,550 per person for a three-night cruise, not including a 12% goods and services tax and 10% service charge. For more information, call 800-819-5053 or visit fourseasons.com .

A cruise from the US to the Maldives

Yes, you can get all the way to the Maldives and back from the United States by ship. There are just two big caveats: First, you need to block out more than 100 days for the trip. Second, the opportunity doesn't come up very often -- usually just once every year or two.

The opportunity arises when a cruise line unveils an around-the-world voyage beginning and ending in the U.S. that includes a visit to the Maldives.

As of the publishing of this story, there are just two such voyages open for bookings:

  • Oceania Cruises plans a 196-day around-the-world sailing from Miami departing on Dec. 21, 2021 that includes a one-day call in the Maldives. The trip, on the 684-passenger Insignia, ends July 5, 2022 in New York. Fares start at $42,199 per person.
  • Crystal Cruises has scheduled a 116-day around-the-world voyage from Miami departing on Jan. 17, 2022 that also includes a one-day call in the Maldives. The trip, on the 980-passenger Crystal Serenity, ends in Miami on May 13, 2022. Fares start at $37,097 per person.

Smaller segments of both trips also are available for booking.

The 980-passenger Crystal Serenity will visit the Maldives in 2022 as part of an around-the-world voyage from Miami. (Photo courtesy of Crystal Cruises)

Nobody goes on these around-the-world voyages just to see the Maldives, of course. The typical around-the-world cruise includes stops at dozens of countries on multiple continents. But, if you're looking to add the Maldives to your country count while visiting an array of other nations, too, all while never boarding a long-haul flight, these two sailings are the cruises for you.
