April Fool’s Day 2023: Emirates launching a new cruise liner was a prank

Travel & tourism.

Were you already planning a cruise? Think again

Emirates Sealine

Dubai: Gotcha! Late last night, Dubai’s flagship carrier, Emirates, announced its foray into an ultra-lux maritime arm - Emirates Sealiner. And in the spirit of April Fool’s Day, we can say – Gotcha! On this day, no one is safe from spoofed ad campaigns and made-up news articles. And Emirates indeed loved its gags.

Emirates said it placed a titanic, multi-billion-dollar order yesterday for an “initial ten cruise ships which are currently being fitted with the latest and best.” No, it didn’t.

Captain Jack Shallow, the newly appointed Chief Maritime Officer at the helm of Emirates Sealine, said: “While cities worldwide remain moored to challenges, Dubai is sailing smoothly at unimaginable knots and has outstanding cruise and other multi-modal transport infrastructure.” Did Emirates mean “Captain Jack Sparrow” from the Pirates of the Caribbean fame? A definite upgrade for him because the last time we checked, he was Captain of the Black Pearl!

And we all know how it ended for that ship. Bookings open June 31; hello, June has only 30 days.

This is not the first time Dubai’s most favourite brand has pulled a prank on April Fool’s Day. In 2018, the carrier royally fooled its fans by pulling a fast one with the impressive Sky Lounge announcement. A completely transparent fleet in its Boeing 777X fleet. A hoax!

And in 2017, Emirates unveiled plans to operate a triple-decker jet equipped with various amenities for in-flight leisure activities, including a swimming pool, a games room, a gym, and even a small park. Not true.

And honestly, when an airline of Emirates’ calibre announces a sea liner, most of us are likely to fall the gag. Did you enjoy this prank from Emirates? We most certainly did! Good one, Emirates!

Emirates Sealine: Is Emirates really launching an ultra luxury cruise liner?

emirates cruise april fools

Emirates has announced the launch of its ultra luxury cruise liner, Emirates Sealine.

@emirates We’re on for the sea-nic route! Introducing Emirates Sealine – our ultra-luxurious cruise liner. 🌊 🛳️ #Emirates #Dubai #Cruise ♬ original sound – Emirates

The airline shared a video of the cruise line’s trial voyage around Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah on social media.

According to Emirates, the sealine promises cruisers top-tier and “never-before-imagined” experiences as they voyage to rarely-before-seen ports of call.

The company said that it placed a titanic, multi-billion-dollar order for an initial 10 cruise ships which are currently being fitted with the latest and the best technology and features.

Emirates said that the first cruise is scheduled to flag off from Dubai Harbour on April 1, 2024, with Karachi as the maiden port of call – harking back to the airline’s first-ever flight in October 1985.

“Emirates is no stranger to the seas, having been associated with powerboat racing in Dubai to Emirates Team New Zealand and more recently, the Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team. While cities worldwide remain moored to challenges, Dubai is sailing smoothly at unimaginable knots and has outstanding cruise and other multi-modal transport infrastructure,” newly appointed chief maritime officer at the helm of Emirates Sealine, Captain Jack Shallow said in a statement .

Emirates said that passengers will be whisked off in custom-built electric chauffeur-driven cars from Dubai Airport to Dubai Harbour and escorted to their luxury cabins onboard in a seamless air-land-sea journey.

Those who want to experience the ultra luxury cruise need to keep their eyes peeled: Itineraries and bookings will be available on June 31, 2023 on the Emirates Sealine website.

Plenty of netizens have wondered whether Emirates’ announcement is for real, given that it was released on April Fools’ Day (April 1, 2023).

It’s an exciting thought to sail the seven seas in such luxury, but AeroTime advises excited cruise lovers to pay attention to details.

Emirates Airline teases expansion into cruise industry on April Fools

Emirates Airline celebrated April Fools Day this year by claiming it was expanding into the cruise industry.

In a post on Instagram the airline announced the faux plans with a video showing a large cruise liner in Emirates livery sailing past Dubai’s iconic Atlantis on the Palm Jumeirah.

Emirates claimed they would be setting sail with Emirates Sealine on April 1st next year. In a nod to the airline’s history, it said the first cruise would be departing Dubai to Karachi.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Emirates (@emirates)

The city in Pakistan is important to Emirates Airline as it was the first route the airline ever launched from Dubai back in 1985 .

“We’ve conquered the skies, and now, we’re charting course to take over the seas! Introducing Emirates Sealine – our ultra-luxurious cruise liner,” the airline said in its post. “Bookings open on 31 June, for its maiden voyage to Karachi on 1 April 2024.”

The airline’s followers were immediately in on the joke, but the news was well received with many claiming that an Emirates cruise line would be one of the best in the world. Emirates’ followers called on the airline to make the joke a reality.

To ensure that everyone knew the news was a joke, the airline said in a news release that the chief executive of the new maritime arm was named Captain Jack Shallow.

Emirates’ April Fools post was a reversal of Royal Caribbean’s April Fool’s joke in 2019 , when it said it would be expanding into the aviation sector with an A380 called Master of the Skies.

Emirates Airline is no stranger to April Fools jokes. Last year the airline introduced Emireats, a new service that would enable users to order food from anywhere in the world and have it delivered to their door.

The year before that, Emirates leveraged the size of its A380 to claim that it was introducing onboard weddings, enabling passengers to walk down the aisle and get married at 40,000 feet.

Cruise line also got in on the fun with April Fools this year, with Royal Caribbean’s Australian branch claiming that it was introducing a purpose-built ship for the Australian market called Crikey of the Seas.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Royal Caribbean Australia & NZ (@royalcaribbeanaunz)

The cruise line said the new ship would have a Budgie Beach, Cricket field, BBQ’s on the balcony suites, Aussie animal sculptures and artwork, and “Aussie cocktails” including Vegemite mojito, lamington mudslide, fairy bread margarita and a pavlova spritz.

In a follow up post, Royal Caribbean said that the announcement was a joke, but said big news would be announced in the coming weeks.

Carnival Cruise Line also marked April Fools by announcing it would be introducing Pet Tenders , allowing cruise passengers to bring their dogs onboard.

April Fools' Day pranks in the UAE: From Emirates to Careem – who was fooled?

Were you already planning a wedding in the sky think again.

Farah Andrews author image

It's April Fools' Day , which means that marketeers the world over have been coming up with fun and cheeky ways to play with their audience, all in the name of tomfoolery.

Sometimes the pranks don't land (we're looking at you,  Volkswagen ... or is it Voltswagen ?) but they often do !

Here is a round up of some of the best April Fools' Day pranks in the UAE this year...

1. Emirates's sky-high weddings

"We're taking love to new heights," Emirates wrote in a gleeful tweet on Wednesday night, announcing that the Dubai airline was going to "launch a special Wedding Service for those who want to tie the knot at 40,000 feet".

Based on the accompanying photograph, the weddings looked set to take place in the business class bar on the A380s – a dream wedding venue for any aviation geeks out there. The key clue that it was seemingly a prank? The wedding date: April 1, 2021.

We're taking love to new heights! Emirates is pleased to launch a special Wedding Service for those who want to tie the knot at 40,000 feet.   Plan your perfect day on our @Airbus A380, now available on select routes.   #FlyEmiratesFlyBetter pic.twitter.com/5SuuIQGdDZ — Emirates Airline (@emirates) March 31, 2021

Emirates has had fun with April Fools pranks in the past. The airline has announced chauffeur-less drones, triple-deck planes and see-through lounges onboard.

This year's announcement seems to have hoodwinked people on social media, who asked: "Is there a link for more information and pricing about this somewhere". Another Twitter user added: "Imagine working on creating this project. Massive excitement @emirates are you hiring?"

2. Careem's new brunch

Careem's 2021 April Fools prank is a new brunch service from the back of its cars. Courtesy Careem

Many of the UAE's Careem users will be well acquainted with opening the app come 12.15pm on a Friday, ready to chauffeur them to their choice of brunch. But this April Fools' Day, the ride-booking app is suggesting that it could bring brunch to users, and then take them on the road, with live entertainment for the drive.

"Available from today, the Careem Brunch will appear as a new ride-hailing option, where customers will be picked up by Brunch Captains who will then provide a picnic basket with over 20 food items put together from a list of the most popular food spots in Dubai," a press release from the company reads.

3. Ekar's ekamel

This April Fool's Day ekar is introducing ekamel. Courtesy ekar

Ekar, the UAE's pay-as-you-go car rental company, launched ekamel for April Fools' Day 2021.

The "off-road service" is available to book via the app, which promises "a wide range of passenger camels instantly".

The parody website www.MarkforHM.com won a Webby award. Courtesy markforhm.com

According to the company, customers can book an ekamel by the minute, hour or day, and special perks include "free desert parking across the UAE".

“The launch of our new ekamel off-road service allows users to choose from a full array of ekar options, on and off the road," says Stanislav Betin, vice-president of product and operations at ekar. "The diverse range of mobility makes ekar the most unique mobility app in the world."

4. No prank from Google

For the second year in a row, Google is skipping April Fools' Day because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Instead the company plans to "find appropriate ways to bring moments of joy to [its] users throughout the year", according to an internal memo.

This is only the second time Google has skipped April 1 festivities since 2004.

"Throughout the past year, I have been so inspired by how helpful our products, programmes, and people have been during humanity's toughest times," an internal memo from Google vice president for global marketing Marvin Chow, obtained by Business Insider, reads. "We've done it with sensitivity and empathy, reflecting the range of challenging experiences so many are experiencing globally."

It adds: "As you will remember, last year we made the decision to pause our longstanding Google tradition of celebrating April Fools’ Day, out of respect for all those fighting Covid-19. With much of the world still grappling with serious challenges, we feel we should again pause the jokes for April Fools’ Day this year. Like we did last year, we should continue to find appropriate ways to bring moments of joy to our users throughout the year."

5. A harmless WhatsApp prank

Cast your mind back to this time in 2020, when PDF documents were regularly shared on WhatsApp with information about Covid-19 and new restrictions being put in place across the UAE, with varying degrees of reliability.

A cheeky UAE WhatsApp user harked back to those times today, with a PDF that is doing the rounds on the messaging app.

A new set of fake 'Dubai lockdown guidelines' are circulating on Whatsapp. Screenshot

"Dubai lockdown guidelines from tonight", the PDF is titled. Whatsapp indicates on the message that it has been "forwarded many times".

When you open the message, however, there is no official message to be found, just an April Fools' Day message.

When you open the PDF, you get a happy, floral 'April Fools Day' message.

6. Flying Hala taxis in Dubai

Another transportation company that got involved with the April Fools' Day fun is RTA's Hala taxis, which claimed to be offering flying taxis in Dubai.

Hala pretended to be starting flying taxis on April Fools' Day. Courtesy Hala

"Hala is excited to unveil our first test flight using a Hala flying taxi on April 11. There’s room for four passengers and one pilot," an announcement read.

There were test flight requirements, passengers were to be aged 18 years or older to participate, and weight limits applied.

But it was all in good fun, and now the company is offering a 15 per cent discount on people's next ride with Hala, using the discount code "PRANKEDBYHALA" on Careem.

7. McGettigan's ‘Mc-Scent-igan’s’ candles

McGettigan's Irish bar and restaurant has launched scented candles - it claimed. Courtesy McGettigan's

McGettigan's, the popular Irish bar and restaurant chain, announced the launch of four limited-edition candles, "as part of its wider plan to expand into the homeware category, following unprecedented demand".

Realistically, it was part of its April Fools' Day gag.

A press release claimed the launch of four 190-gram scented candles called The Black Stuff, McGett-Together, The Full Irish and Halfway to Christmas, and that production of McGettigan’s ‘Mc-Scent-igan’s’ candles "is underway in a secret factory in the heart of Ireland and will be available sometime in the very distant future".

A quote from Dennis McGettigan, chief executive of McGettigan’s Group, said: "During the lockdown period, I decided to rediscover stagnant hobbies and interests, one of which was candle making. As an avid candle lover and with over 100 candles lit in my home at any given time, they produce, not only a fire hazard but a beautiful atmosphere and even more delightful scent.

"However, I noticed that all the scents did not ignite a fire inside of me, leaving me wanting more. It was then I decided to embark on the biggest personal journey in my life. Creating the perfect candle. Not only was I able to achieve this once but four times over, which we now present to you. I hope these candles warm your home as much as they warmed my heart creating them."

8. KHDA's surprise home visits

Dubai's private education body, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, has quite the reputation when it comes to memes and having fun with announcements on social media.

On April Fools' Day, it announced that the authority would now be sending in school inspectors unannounced to visit students at homes.

"Due to ongoing distance learning, school inspectors will now begin unannounced visits to family homes. Ratings of each family will be published online to ensure students are receiving adequate support, sleep and chocolate," it posted.

"What’s the criteria for evaluation? What ratings be for white, dark, mint, with nuts, organic cocoa be for chocolates?" one user asked following the pronouncement.

"We support chocolate diversity," the KHDA responded.

What are the origins of April Fools' Day?

Like many unofficial “holidays”, the origin of April Fools' Day is a mystery.

Every year on April 1, people pull pranks on friends and loved ones, often before midday (if you play a prank after that time, then you’re the fool). The tradition has been embraced all over the world and has increasingly become part of company marketing campaigns.

In 2015, The National 's April Fools' “news story” about a government proposal to ban gas-guzzling 4x4s in the UAE even sparked a debate among the public about the merits of the plan.

Dubai airline Emirates issues elaborate April Fools' Day “announcements” every year. Last year, news that it was launching a cruise liner set to sail on April 1, 2024, grabbed headlines around the world.

But does anyone actually know why they’re doing it? The short answer is: no. Here are a few of the legends that surround the day’s beginnings.

A changing calendar

The story goes that when France changed from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar with the 1564 Edict of Roussillon, thus moving the start of a new year from April to January 1, some people were slow to catch on.

Those who were still celebrating the spring equinox or Easter as the beginning of a fresh year were referred to as “April fools” or “poisson d’avril”, which means “fish of April”. To that end, one of the pranks played on these “fools” was to stick paper fish on their backs – or so the story goes.

Chaucer made it up

Another theory links back to Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th-century collection of The Canterbury Tales .

In the Nun's Priest Tale , the English poet and author tells the tale of foolish trickery between a fox and a rooster, and midway through the story he pauses to refer to the date.

He says the events happened on “32 March” or “Syn March bigan thritty dayes and two”, which was believed to mean April 1.

Most scholars have come to the conclusion, however, that this is a copy error and he actually wrote “Syn March was gon” and that the passage meant 32 days after March, and the tale is actually set on May 3.

Confusing, yes, but if he was referring to April Fool's Day this would definitely be the first mention of it on record.

Past examples of hilarity

Before the emergence of April Fools Day, there were festivals such as Hilaria, which is the Latin for “joyful”. This springtime celebration was marked in ancient Rome towards the end of March to honour Cybele, an Anatolian mother goddess.

One of the traditions of these festivities saw people dress up in disguise and make fun of others.

Does it matter where it comes from?

Wherever the tradition stems from, the idea spread throughout Britain in the 18th century, which is where it transformed into what we know it as today.

Over the years, countless elaborate jokes have been played at peoples' expense. One of the most famous examples occurred in 1957, when the BBC news show Panorama announced that the dreaded spaghetti weevil had virtually been eradicated and Swiss farmers were harvesting a huge amount of spaghetti crop. It showed accompanying footage of peasants pulling strands of spaghetti from trees.

People called in, asking how they could grow their own spaghetti tree, to which the BBC replied “placed a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best”. Apparently even the BBC's director-general later admitted he checked an encyclopaedia to find out if that's how the pasta actually grew.

The origins of April Fools Day are as confusing as the pranks it inspires. Getty
