What GAFFL Users Are Saying

Marie

"It’s really nice to have a platform like GAFFL with lots of travelers wanting to do the same as you, a real beautiful cultural exchange. You can meet people so easily and in a trustful way. We were four girls, from French, German and American backgrounds, without knowing each other from before. We spent an amazing week together, 2000km driving, camping on the way. We saw kangaroos, koalas, penguins and pelicans"

Saed

“I have found GAFFL to be an amazing tool for finding similar minded travel partners to embark on an adventure. Through GAFFL, I had organized a trip to Mexico City last month and Quazi joined the trip from Victoria, BC. We spent 14 days of straight exploring, hiking, eating and drinking. Quite an amazing experience - all thanks to GAFFL!”

Scarlett

"I accidentally scrolled across GAFFL and I'm so pleased I did. I met Amaia and immediately decided to road-trip together. We're spending 10 days together and it's great because we have so much in common. Couldn't have done it without GAFFL helping us find one another! It has honestly made NZ so much cheaper to explore as I get to split the costs with someone too"

Were you looking forward to a trip with your friends, only to find out that they had backed out last minute? Wondering how to find a travel companion online? Even if your family and friends' schedules don't match yours, your vacation doesn't have to be ruined because of it. GAFFL can help you to find the perfect travel companion for your next adventure.

The best way to find a travel buddy on GAFFL is to search for your desired destination and browse through thousands of user-generated trips created by solo travelers around the world.

A good travel companion is someone who has a similar itinerary to you. It's also someone you think you'll get along with.

Every user on GAFFL has a profile where they list their interests. If you and your potential trip mate share some common interests, it’ll make your trip go a lot smoother.

It's also important to have a similar budget in mind. If your travel companion wants to do more activities and eat at expensive restaurants but you can’t afford it, it can lead to an unpleasant trip for the both of you.

When browsing trips on GAFFL, make sure to read through the trip details to learn more about the trip and determine if the activities are something you want to do and can afford.

If you like a trip on GAFFL, simply click 'Connect,' and you'll be able to chat with your travel buddy right away. If you have your own travel plans, you can start your own trip and others can request to connect with you!

Finding the right travel companion online can be difficult for solo travelers. GAFFL, on the other hand, makes it very simple. Use our world-class real-time messaging system to get to know your potential travel partner. Chat with them to see if they'd be a good travel companion for you, and then plan together, meet up with your travel buddy, and start exploring together.

GAFFL is the best website/app for solo travelers looking for travel companions online because we prioritize our travelers' trust and safety. Our multi-step verification process includes social media, phone number, and a valid government ID, so you can be confident in your potential travel companion. With adventurers from over 190 countries, you can connect, chat, and find the perfect travel buddy to meet up with on GAFFL.

I think this is a fabulous idea because the things that can get expensive while solo traveling can usually also be easily split between people. If you aren’t a hostel fan, it would be awesome to have people to split hotels and Airbnb with.

If car rental is the cheapest way to get around a destination, it would be ideal to have others to split the costs with. But most importantly it always makes the experience that much more memorable when you have new friends to share it with.

We truly believe that the best memories and experiences are the ones that are shared with others. It doesn’t matter if you’ve known someone for an hour or your whole life, when you do something badass together it’s sure to be a time you won’t forget.

Making connections and becoming friends with people all over the world is such a powerful tool to have when traveling. One day maybe you’ll visit your new friend in their homeland. Some of the best trips happen when you have a friend playing tour guide in their country.

GAFFL is a really cool opportunity to enrich your travels with like-minded people who will push you to get out of your comfort zone. No matter what type of personality you have, making new friends on the road is easier than ever.

One of the things that hold people back is that they don’t have a partner or a best friend to travel with and they feel scared and uncertain to travel alone, especially long-term. GAFFL helps with that!

Another thing that holds people back is the perceived cost of travel. While travel doesn’t have to be expensive, it’s always more affordable when you can share the cost of accommodation and groceries with someone else. Again, GAFFL provides a solution for that!

Solo travel is great. But there are some times that I do not recommend someone travel solo and where I personally try my hardest not to travel solo. Some examples of this relate to safety, like hiking a trail that doesn’t have many people walking it each day, or being in certain destinations where I’ve heard from others that it’s difficult as a solo female.

Other examples relate to expenses, like taking a road trip and renting a car. Situations like these are where I think something like GAFFL is a great idea. With GAFFL, you can find a group to go on that hike with or split that car rental with!

I think GAFFL plays a role by allowing solo travelers to find travel buddies when needed. Though solo travel is a great way to travel, there are some experiences that are better enjoyed with more people (some don’t even allow for solo).

Friends and families are not always available to travel with, and sometimes the interests do not align for travel. Or sometimes you just want to socialize while still being solo most of the time. I think GAFFL helps solve these problems.

Seeking travel partner to Goa, India and perhaps beyond

Travel Forums Travel Companions Seeking travel partner to Goa, India and perhaps beyond

I am experienced traveler who, this time, would prefer not taking off alone. I would like to spend about 4-6 weeks beginning mid January starting in Goa, India and setting off in the region. You should be fit, calm, and love traveling.

I am fit, funny, solvent, and know how to watch someone's back.

I'm also looking for a travel partner to set off to India in Jan. I was thinking of flying into Northern India though and travelling down, finishing in Sri Lanka. I havn't really looked into it much as I havn't found anyone to go with and I don't fancy travelling India alone. I was thinging maybe 6 weeks in India then 2 weeks in Sri Lanka.

Were you planning to make your way up to Delhi or surrounding area or were you thinking of spending your time just around Goa?

I enjoy travelling and have done a couple of shorter trips but did a 6 month round the world trip at the beginning of the year and now really want to go off again! I have travelled both with others and independently but as I say I don't fancy the idea of India by myself!

Dear Laura,

Bitten by the bug, eh?

I know how that feels. Just can't beat that feeling gigantic freedom and when you're far away.

I only have about 7 weeks. I should have asked or a longer leave.

Your plan sounds enticing. But I'm not sure I can do all of that within the time frame...especially in a country where things may not run on time and rushing may only result in frustration.

Yet, I'm still fighting the urge to do just what you are planning--the all-out backpacking adventure rather than choosing a base and making forays to the surrounding area.

I once traveled overseas for almost 2 years. That sort of freedom and those memories are so emotional compelling

I would very much like to visit Sri Lanka, as well.

Anyway, tell me more about what you really, really want out of the trip. What's your style of travel?

Hey you two,

I'm currently planning a trip to India in Jan. I have no concrete plans as I was hoping to find someone to travel with - all I know is that I would like to be away for around 2 months and see as much as I can in that time frame.

I recently returned from travelling around Central America on my own, but I would feel a lot more comfortable in India with someone else, and for the company as well as the journeys would inevitably be a lot longer.

I have looked a itineraries, but I do prefer to have a rough idea of where I want to go and end up and then just go with the flow (when this doesn't involve risking my life...!) and I hate the idea of travelling so fast that it becomes a chore. I know I want to see Goa, Delhi, and the Taj Mahal, and other than that I am open to suggestions as long as I get to see a diverse array of Indian offerings and culture...

I know it can be nerve-wracking when one contemplates travel to a new place alone. As a man, I cannot truly understand what it means to undertake solo travel as a woman. But you should know that you will meet so many travelers in India, especially if you stay on the circuit of well-worn destination.

Just go and it will happen.

I simply want to let things flow starting with in Goa. If it is so beautiful (as they say) I may just hang around there for the most part.

You have a certain itinerary which I may not be able to fulfill. I've been to the standard Indian tourist spots and do not want to pressure myself into moving for the sake of seeing the next great spot... 'cause there's always another spot but, in two months, it's easy to push too hard and get weary.

Arguably, India demands 6 months for a proper walk about. And India is full of single guys/couples/girls backpacking around, so fear not.

But if you want to travel just around the Goa region, I'll keep you safe and laughing.

Your plans sound to be what I was thinking of doing. When in January are you thinking of going? As you may have read from the earlier messages I'm thinking of travelling for a couple of months - my original plan was to travel northern India then travel down and finish in Sri Lanka but I'm happy to go with the flow and after looking at places if there isnt time to fit in Sri Lanka I'd be happy to finish in Goa or somewhere like that. My travel style seems similar to how you've described yours - have an idea of where to start and finish and where would be good to go but other than that go with the flow.

How were your travels in America? where did you end up? how long did you go for? I returned from 6 months travelling in August and can't wait to get away again!

Let me know if you're interested in chatting a bit more

Goa Travel Tips: Everything you need to know before your Goa trip

1. book your taxi at the airport prepaid counter or using the goamiles app.

Goa airport

As soon as you exit Goa airport, you will notice hundreds of pick-up placards and dozens of cab drivers calling you out.

Don’t pick the first driver who approaches you as he will definitely take overcharge you.

Instead, choose one of the options below:

  • Book a prepaid taxi from the prepaid taxi counter just before you exit the Goa airport. Expect to wait for about 10-15 minutes for your prepaid taxi to arrive. The benefit of booking a prepaid taxi is that the charges are fixed and you don’t have to worry about getting ripped.
  • Download the Goamiles app on your phone and book a cab once you’re ready to exit. Goamiles is a Government app that lets you book a cab online the same way in which you would book an Uber. The rates are usually much cheaper than local drivers and at times even cheaper than the prepaid counter. The only caveat – you may have to wait for a cab to be available for booking.
  • Prebook your cab online – this option would be a bit expensive but it would ensure that you have a cab ready the moment you’re ready to leave from the airport. In any case, this option often works out cheaper than booking an airport pick up from your hotel (Especially if you’re staying in 4+ star property)

See airport pick up options here

2. Carry your ID cards for renting a vehicle

To rent a vehicle in Goa, you need the following ID cards

  • two Government issued ID card and
  • a valid driving license

Also a practice that I find rather annoying is that of depositing your ID card like your PAN, Aadhar Card or Passport with the bike rental shop for the duration of your rental.

So it would be prudent to carry two Government ID cards – one to be kept as a deposit and the other to show at bars and clubs requiring age verification.

Make sure you get a written acknowledgment of the deposit of your Government ID card to avoid issues later.

3. Understand how huge Goa is

travel partner goa

Many people who have never visited Goa imagine it to be like any other tourist destination in India – i.e. they believe it to be a small town or a city.

But what you must remember is that Goa is a state. Even though it is one of the smallest states in India, it is still much bigger than a regular tourist town in India.

In fact, the vertical length of Goa is approximately 105 kilometres and its approximate width is 60 kilometres.

Thus, you can never ‘cover’ all of Goa in one trip. You will have to mostly cover only a small part of Goa in one trip or divide your time in Goa wisely between North and South Goa to make the most of your trip.

As a first-timer in Goa trying to visit major tourist attraction, understand that you will spend a considerable amount of time commuting between places.

In my digital travel plan Goa: Planned for You , I have created a full itinerary to cut down your trip planning process.

All you have to do is follow it!

travel partner goa

Goa: Planned for You

A handy digital travel plan that includes

  • Specially curated stay recommendations
  • restaurant suggestions
  • a day-wise break-up of things to do
  • a fully interactive Goa map
  • special insights and lots more!

4. Rent a two-wheeler to make the most of your trip

Vrushali riding a scooter in Goa

Given how huge Goa is, the best way to cut down on time spent travelling is by renting a two-wheeler.

Two-wheelers are perfect

  • for riding through the narrow interior roads of Goa
  • for avoiding traffic jams in main cities like Panjim or Madgaon
  • to cut down overall costs as a typical per day scooter rental only costs INR 400 and petrol in Goa is also much cheaper than most Indian states.

The roads in Goa are also in good condition for most parts of the year.

The only time when riding a scooter won’t be a convenient option is during monsoons.

Foreigners not used to riding in India can safely initiate themselves in Goa as there is hardly any traffic in the internal roads in Goa. Once you build confidence, you can then venture on the highways and in main cities.

You can also get fancier, bigger bikes on rent. Expect to pay a higher rent for these.

I personally prefer a scooter over a bike for its storage space.

5. Practice caution when getting a vehicle on rent

Scooter Photo Goa

It is very common for tourists to take a two-wheeler or a four-wheeler on rent when in Goa.

But to avoid getting in any kind of rental troubles later, check the following

  • the condition of the vehicle you are taking on rent. It is advisable to take a good-quality video recording of the vehicle you plan to take on rent before you make a payment in respect of the same. Make sure you capture all dents, scratches and damages to the vehicle.
  • the vehicle you’re taking on rent is a tourist vehicle i.e. one with a yellow number plate. White number plates are private vehicles and you will be penalized for taking those on rent.
  • The quantity of petrol in the tank. Most vehicles will only come with just about enough petrol to take you to the nearest petrol pump.

6. Check reviews on multiple platforms before you book your hotel

Goa is one of the prime most tourist destinations in India. As a result, there is cut throat competition amongst hotels, hostels and homestays.

To lure customers into booking the hotel, a few hotels have been known

  • to put false photos on websites or
  • put photos of superior rooms only or
  • put super edited photos

Tourists have faced difficulties on account of such scammy behavior.

To avoid getting into such situations, please

  • check tourist photos of a hotel
  • read reviews across multiple booking platforms
  • book a hotel recommended to you by an expert or someone who has stayed at the property in the recent past.

I faced a similar issue on one of my trips when I booked a highly-rated hotel only to find multiple cockroaches in my room. It was a horror!

After that, I have exercised tremendous caution when booking hotels in Goa. To avoid getting into trouble, I book all my stays in Goa using Booking.com which allows free cancellation.

7. Book a taxi outside your hotel

Goa cabs outside hotels

Booking a taxi for sightseeing or for pick up and drops to the nearest station often proves to be much more expensive.

This is because hotels are not allowed to hire their own drivers.

Most hotels use the services of local taxi drivers from their area and thus charge a surcharge or extra commission to you.

To save money, directly approach a taxi driver waiting outside your hotel.

The only minor inconvenience caused to you is that you will have to carry your luggage outside as the taxi driver that you’ve booked directly won’t be allowed entry inside the hotel premises.

(As ridiculous as this may sound, that’s exactly how Goa works!)

8. Be prepared for massive crowds in touristy Goa

Crowd at Goa Velha - Basilica of Bom Jesus

Many a times when people read that some areas in Goa are crowded, they don’t fathom the degree.

So let me help you get an idea.

The tourist side of Goa i.e. areas between Candolim and Vagator are massively crowded.

  • Thousands of tourists throng the beaches in this area at any given point in time.
  • Most of the restaurants are full and you will need to wait to get a place.
  • Every inch of party clubs is packed with people

If you are someone who absolutely can’t stand such massive crowds, please avoid visiting touristy areas on weekends (in particular long weekends).

The crowds in touristy Goa recedes considerably on weekdays.

9. Bargain hard everywhere

Anjuna Flea Market Goa

Like all tourist destinations, if you want to maximise the return on your buck, bargain hard.

Don’t hestitate to bargain at

  • flea markets
  • street shops
  • vehicle rentals
  • tourist taxis
  • tour operators
  • watersport vendors

Put your shameless haggle pants on and start negotiating from at least 60% of the price quoted and then go upwards.

Probably the only places where you won’t be allowed to bargain is at cafés and restaurants.

10. Pack light and shop locally

As I have stated in my (soon to be published) article on what to pack for a trip to Goa , it’s is best to pack light for a Goa trip.

You can find lots of shops selling clothes, swimwear, sarongs, jewellery, hats and other accessories near all beach and tourist areas.

Plus, all the areas have

  • grocery stores
  • medical shops and
  • liquor shops

So it is best to buy stuff that you need on reaching Goa and pack as lightly as possible.

This saves space in your luggage as well as proves to be economic especially for longer stays in Goa.

Don’t plan a hectic trip (you’ll miss the real beauty of Goa)

11. Skip tourist attractions that don’t interest you

Basilica of Bom Jesus - Old Goa

Let me be honest with you-

As much as I recommend visiting the tourist places in Goa, in my opinion, they hardly encapsulate the essence of visiting Goa.

The essence of Goa lies in experiencing

  • a laid-back way of living
  • a live and let live way policy where there is a lot more social acceptance to practices otherwise frowned upon in the country like drinking, partying, dressing less conservatively, etc.

Unfortunately, a mere visit to a tourist attraction hardly let’s us experience this beauty of Goa.

Therefore, if visiting churches, museums or forts doesn’t interest you, it’s okay to leave those places out of your itinerary.

12. Explore as many offbeat places as possible

Tambdi Surla Temple

Goan tourism has grown extremely commercial over the years. This has resulted in slow damage and loss of charm of prime tourist attractions like

  • Fort Aguada
  • Chapora Fort
  • Old Goan Churches
  • Calangute and Baga beaches

To enhance the quality of your visit, include as many offbeat locations in your itinerary as possible.

Some recommendations are

  • Tambdi Surla temple
  • Bondla Wildlife sanctuary
  • Mahavir Wildlife sanctuary
  • Less touristy beaches like Cola beach, Patnem beach, Talpona beach, Betalbatim beach etc.

13. Try out street food and local bakeries

Ros Omelette at a street vendor near Calangute Goa

While Instagrammers may be populating your feed with the trendiest restaurants and cafés all around Goa, the real magic lies in its local street food and bakeries.

Local street food and bakeries in Goa offer absolutely delicious yet inexpensive food.

For breakfast, eating freshly baked food at a bakery feels much more satiating than eating at a fancy eatery.

For main meals too, you can safely rely on streed food joints that serve Poi, Ros Omelette, Xacuti, Goan Chilly Chicken, Samosas, Bhaje and Patal Bhaji and Wada. The food is super filling and hardly puts a dent in your pocket.

The food sold here is also classic Goan food that you won’t get to taste in other bigger food joints.

14. Be ready for food overdose

travel partner goa

When in Goa… you eeeaaaaaat!

It’s so difficult to limit your portion sizes thanks to the sheer variety of delicious food that surrounds you.

From seafood specialities to a fish thali to continental cuisine to baked goods, it is safe to label Goa as a foodie’s paradise.

The intake of main meals is further loaded with occasional drinks, juices, finger foods, coffees and desserts.

So, in short, be ready for some calorie overload.

15. Don’t accept random stuff from strangers

The consumption and distribution of drugs is a serious legal offence in India. The law prescribes a very harsh punishment that includes rigorous imprisonment for the same.

Yet, cases of illegal distribution and consumption of drugs repeatedly come to light as Goa police cracks down on offenders.

Don’t accidentally fall prey to such crimes.

  • Accepting anything from strangers
  • Visiting a stranger’s room
  • Attending parties hosted by people you don’t know

16. Don’t be tempted to drink irresponsibly

Beer at a sunset shack

Alcohol is available all across Goa. From liquor shops, to restaurants to beach shacks, you can find liquor easily.

But don’t be tempted to drink irresponsibly.

  • you aren’t drinking and driving
  • you have made arrangements of being dropped back to your accommodation if you are planning to get drunk at a late night party.

17. Beware of common scams

Baga at Night

Like every major tourist destination in the world, Goa has its share of scamsters looking for innocent tourist preys.

Here are a few common scams

  • Owner of the vehicle secretly damaging the vehicle rented to you to stake a claim at the deposit.
  • Selling you a boat ride promising a certain distance or time and then finishing it off much sooner
  • Guaranteeing a dolphin watching experience when in fact there is hardly any likelihood of dolphin spotting
  • Paying for a permanent tattoo and it getting washed away in a few days
  • Showing high-quality cashews from the window of a packet but the rest of the packet being filled with spoilt cashews.
  • Claiming to sell top-quality spices and tea to foreigners which then turn out to be fake or of extremely low quality
  • A friendly-stranger chatting with you and singing songs with you at the beach and then forcing you to pay for his performance

On top of this, there are many scams where people looking to engage in illegal activities like drugs and prostitution are duped. But the only way to protect yourself from such scams is by not indulging in any activity that’s illegal as per the laws of the land.

18. Don’t travel with a pocket full of cash

I think in today’s age of technological advancement, not travelling with a pocket full of cash should be a no-brainer.

Why attract the risk of being robbed when you could be transacting digitally, right?

So to avoid being pickpocketed or robbed in Goan tourist areas, don’t walk around with a loaded pocket.

There are plenty of ATMs in all tourist areas. Most commercial establishments also accept digital payments and cards.

19. Embrace slowness

A typical Goa scene

Goa takes the meaning of ‘slow’ to a whole other level.

People in Goa don’t hustle and that’s evident from

  • shops and restaurants remaining shut in the afternoons (Don’t worry, beachside shacks and popular joints remain open)
  • shopkeepers taking their own sweet time to get you what you need
  • Taxi drivers and autorickshaw drivers driving at their own pace (i.e. slowly)
  • Dispensaries and offices opening by 10 am and shutting down before 6 pm + take an afternoon break.
  • Restaurants and cafés taking time to serve you your food

You will also notice the laidback attitude in all walks of life.

You will rarely find rickshaws queueing up at railway stations or airports early in the morning, in the afternoon or after sunset.

If you have a flight or a train to catch at odd hours, please book your commute in advance.

Finding someone on the streets at odd hours is nearly impossible.

Basically, if you want something done fast or need some urgent assistance, you are in the wrong region.

The only way to cope with this slowness of lifestyle is by embracing it and planning around it.

20. Protect your skin

Out in the sun at lower fort Aguada

I have written extensively about the damage sunrays can cause you in Goa in my article on what to pack for a trip to Goa.

I have learned the hard way by getting my skin burnt to the point of the sunburnt skin flaking and peeling off. But you can learn from my mistakes.

Please do the following to protect yourself from the harsh sun

  • use an SPF-50 sunscreen like this one
  • wear good sunglasses (avoid buying the cheap ones you get at local street-side shops)
  • wear a hat or a cap (buy locally – good variety at affordable pricing)
  • drink plenty of water and stay hydrated
  • avoid direct sunlight in outdoor areas in the afternoon
  • wear comfortable, light cotton clothing

Likewise, expect mosquitoes and small insects in many budget rooms and beachside accommodations. Carry a good skin cream and mosquito repellant to protect yourself.

21. Choose to stay longer

As I told you earlier, Goa is not another tourist town.

It’s an entire state and the only way to do justice to it is by

  • planning a long trip to Goa
  • planning multiple trips to Goa where you explore different sides of Goa everytime

Doing this will get you closer to the beauty of Goa, make you understand its culture and its way of life.

A rushed trip to Goa that covers tourist places and leaves no extra time is the worst way of exploring Goa.

22. Buy drinks from a liquor shop

I have let you in on this trick in my article on 12 useful ways to visit Goa on a budget . But let me quickly summarise it for you here-

Alcohol is cheaper in Goa but only if you buy it at a local liquor shop.

Popular restaurants and pubs serve alcohol at rates comparable with major Indian cities. Drinking here will cause a hole in your pocket.

So be smart and buy drinks from a liquor shop and enjoy it with your friends and family at your hotel or hostel.

23. Opt for street-side shops to buy clothing (instead of flea markets)

Akshay walking through shops at Vagator

Goan flea markets are truly one of a kind. They are weekly and have a certain attractive vibe to it. The most famous flea markets in Goa are

  • Anjuna flea market (Wednesday only)
  • Night Bazaar at Vagator (Friday only)
  • Saturday Night Market at Arpora (closed following the pandemic, could reopen shortly)

While these places sell some truly exquisite clothing and jewellery items, I think that they don’t justify their once a week tease.

Most of the clothes sold at these markets are found in street-side shops (Especially in the everyday market that sits near Anjuna). Buying at street-side shops proves to be beneficial for two main reasons

  • it’s often much cheaper
  • damaged items are easier to replace or return as the shop is available on all days and not just once a week.

Plus, you also save on the entry fee charged by some flea markets by shopping from local street-side vendors instead.

24. Dress modestly at temples and churches

Typical Goan temple scenes

Just because Goan dressing standards are not as orthodox as many other places in India does not mean that you are allowed to disrespect local culture.

Goa is home to some of the most beautiful and religiously symbollic temples and churches.

Do not enter these religious institutions skimpily dressed.

Avoid wearing sleeveless clothing, deep neck tops or clothing that’s above your knees.

25. Save maps offline

Goa, in general, enjoys excellent network coverage. But there are still a few regions where you won’t get any connectivity. These areas include

  • some routes leading to Cabo de Rama
  • Cola beach and nearby areas
  • portions on the highway near Uttorda and Majorda
  • approach road towards Dudhsagar falls.

If you are using Google Maps or Maps to navigate, you may risk getting stuck in such regions.

Always save maps offline when covering major distances by road.

26. Wear night driving glasses for riding on Goan roads at night

Riding a two-wheeler in Goa is a fun experience, except at night. At night, when you ride from one place to another you will notice a number of small flying insects. (I wish I knew the name of these insects). My husband was troubled by these insects as they would enter his eye and make riding extremely difficult.

This problem is particularly faced on the highway connecting North Goa to South Goa.

Wear night driving glasses to beat this issue.

Flight Booking: Check the availability of tickets, the best time to fly, and the cheapest fares on Skyscanner . You may also find a cheap flight via CheapOair

Accommodation: I absolutely love booking through Agoda . In most countries and particularly in Asia, I often find the best fares on Agoda. But I also love the no prepayment and no cancellation fee policy of Booking.com . For cheap accommodations and hostels, nothing beats Hostelworld .

Car Rentals: You may find and rent an appropriate car via RentalCars . It’s hassle-free and reliable.

Guided Tours: I absolutely love GetYourGuide for local sightseeing tours, walking tours, history tours, and food tours. The booking process is seamless, and the tours are super affordable. But in Asian countries, I prefer Viator or Klook for their affordably priced tours.

The Shooting Star

The Perfect 3-Day Goa Itinerary for Slow Travel.

travel partner goa

On my first trip to Goa as an adult, my partner and I stayed at an “offbeat” beach that had already been invaded by overtourism. That experience, filled with characterless beach shacks, multicuisine food and hordes of tourists, turned me off Goa.

Much later, I returned to experience slow travel for the first time.

I’m grateful that the universe conspired to have us stay at Cancio’s House , a 500-year-old traditional Goan homestay in Aldona, with its own well for drinking water, jackfruit trees for shade, and a courtyard around which three generations of the Amaral family have grown up. It was here that I first learnt about the susegad Goan life – aka the art of slowness and contentment.

travel partner goa

The weeks we spent here were filled rain-filled walks, destination-less scooter rides, warm conversations with our hosts, visits to the local bakery, and a lot of observation and introspection. It was for the first time that I learnt that this is what travelling is really about. Not a checklist of places to tick off, but a chance to experience a world different from the one we’re familiar with.

I’ve returned to Goa pretty much every year since, sometimes for several months, and sometimes for a few days. Each time, I’m reminded that slow travel isn’t about how much time we have but how we choose to spend it.

Thanks to this ever-growing connection with Goa, I’ve advised so many friends on how to make the most of their Goa trips. This day-to-day itinerary includes some of my favorite adventures and spots, and takes you away from the beaten path to a slower, more intimate experience of the Goa I love.

Goa Trip Plan for 3 Days

travel partner goa

With that in mind, my recommended Goa itinerary is one that allows enough time and mind space to live and breathe its slow, susegad life – even it’s just over 3 days.

These North and South Goa itineraries aim to take you away from the well-trodden tourist path, and challenge the idea of Goa you’re probably familiar with. They are filled with meaningful outdoor, culinary and cultural adventures that often get buried under the sun-sand-party scene of Goa. These experiences also support small local businesses, and protect Goa’s living culture and natural ecosystems – ensuring that your 3-day trip is not only fun and memorable, but also positively impacts Goa.

North Goa Itinerary for 3 Days

Where to stay in north goa.

There is something for every budget in Goa, but in all honesty, a lot of it is sh*t. Since the surge of remote workers and revenge travel in the last few years, accommodation prices in Goa have been soaring. Sadly, many ‘homestays’ have turned into commercial businesses, and you often end up paying a lot for not very hospitable experiences.

Here are two places I highly recommend:

Cancio’s House, Aldona

travel partner goa

Stay in the outhouse cottage of a 500-year-old traditional Goan home at Cancio’s House , hosted by three generations of the Amaral family! I’ve stayed here several times over the years, and each time, I’m amazed by the warmth, wealth of stories, and Goan recipes I get to try (even as a vegan ). The village of Aldona may have changed quite a bit over the years, but it still retains its Goan charm – a 16th century church, lush rice paddies, old Goan houses, and their quirky owners, always a delight to chat with.

The Secret Garden, Saligao

the secret garden goa

I wrote parts of my first book at The Secret Garden – a traditional Goan house painstakingly refurbished by a Goan-British couple, and now home to its own food forest. On offer are heartwarming conversations, sourdough pancakes (YES!), and swimming under the stars.

Where to eat in North Goa

kokni kanteen

Goan thali and local Saraswat cuisine

Even after all these years of visiting and living in Goa, I’m surprised to learn about Goan food I haven’t tried before. While family kitchens (like Raquel’s kitchen in Cancio’s house) are the real treasure trove of Goan dishes, the true blue Goan thali at Kokni Kanteen is a good starting point. My favorite Goan restaurant is Mum’s Kitchen in Panjim (avoid the Assagao branch), where I love the uddamethi and tamdi bhaji with sanna. A breakfast spot I love is The Local Table , for a wicked patal bhaji.

Best cafes and restaurants in North Goa

North Goa can spoil anyone for choice, but as someone who looks for vegan-friendly, preferably organic and nourishing food, some of my favorite places include Bloom & Brew in Assagao, The Rice Mill in Morjim, Bean Me Up in Vagator, and Moka in Siolim.

How to Spend 3 Days in North Goa – Day 1

cycling chorao

My Goa trip plan for 3 days can be mixed and matched, depending on your mood and the weather:

Get to know your Goan neighborhood

Whether you’re staying in Aldona, Saligao or elsewhere in North Goa, take the morning to acquaint yourself with the slow Goan life. Go on a long walk to the local church, along the rice paddies, and past old Goan homes (noticing how many of them are in a state of disrepair). Stop by to pick up poi at the local bakery, visit the morning market where local farmers sell their produce, and aim to have a chat with atleast one local. Getting yourself into the pace of Goa is a great way to set yourself up to slow exploration over the rest of the trip.

Cycle or e-bike on the sleepy Chorao island

Away from the crowds of Calangute and Baga, escape to the island of Chorao for a glimpse of Goa that once was – full of wild mangroves, endless paddy fields, and glorious old houses with a balcao. Sign up for a guided cycling or e-biking ride with Cycling Zens or B:Live , exploring the quiet beauty of the island on two wheels – one of the best places to see in goa in 3 days. Remember to carry your own reusable water bottle to stay hydrated!

Find pre-loved delights in Vagator

It’s so exciting that Goa finally has its own thrift store – Good Karma , in Vagator. Featuring pre-loved clothes, accessories, shoes and books, this is not just a way to buy second hand, but also buy stuff embedded with the stories of strangers. If you have clothes and books in good condition, you can also donate them to the store. Part of the profits are channeled towards local non-profits like WAG (Welfare for Animals in Goa).

Shop for organic, fair trade clothes at No Nasties

Ditch the wasteful fast fashion brands taking over Goa and other parts of the world, to shop at No Nasties – a homegrown, organic, fair trade store in Assagao. I bought my first t-shirt from No Nasties over eight years ago, and it’s still serving me well! This kind of slow, ‘I can wear this forever’ fashion, is a guilt-free answer to the overconsumption plaguing our planet.

How to Spend 3 Days in North Goa – Day 2

goa waterfalls

Hike to a secret waterfall or swimming hole

Wake up early morning for a Goan adventure far off the beaten path. Head to the far reaches of the Western Ghats, to go on a forest hike for a short while or half a day, depending on your interest and abilities. Swim in a secret waterfall, or jump into a forested swimming hole (like the cenotes in Mexico!). Wrap up the outdoor experience with a traditional Goan meal cooked by a local family. In these wild pockets lies the realization that there’s so much more to Goa than the cocktails-and-sunsets long promoted as its cover image.

Two of my favorite adventure travel companies run by local Goans who genuinely care about protecting these wild areas and their geo-locations are Beatroute Explorers and The Local Beat . Expect to spend the entire day on their trips, including a long drive to a hidden location, short or long hike, plenty of chill time in the outdoors, and homemade lunch with a local family.

Take a surfing lesson with Salty Soul

Of course you’re in Goa and you want to spend some time by the sea! Take your playfulness in the waves a notch up by signing up for a surf lesson. As someone who used to watch surfers with awe, I never imagined I’d be able to get up on a surfboard someday. But the waves in Goa are gentle – and one of the best places to learn, or atleast experiment. There’s nothing like the adrenalin of catching a wave! My go to surf spot is Salty Soul , run by two Goan surfers in Mandrem.

Have a lazy beach day

Have your sun, sand and sunset evening in Goa after all. Laze at the beaches of Morjim or Ashwem, or venture further ashore to Keri. After sunset, stay for a quiet beach walk under the sunset sky, as the stars shimmer out one by one.

If you happen to be in North Goa on:

A Sunday: Check out MOG Sundays for soulful talks curated by the Museum of Goa , featuring local authors, entrepreneurs, environmentalists, historians and more. A great coming together of Goans and the Goa-curious.

A full moon night: Catch a Hindustani classical music performance, alongside some incredible sushi, at Tien in Vagator.

An alternate Sunday: Go for the New Earth Gathering at the Offbeat Goa Space – a vegan, community market bringing together local and resident entrepreneurs who specialize in all things natural and eco-friendly. The venue is in the same space as the Good Karma thrift store.

South Goa Itinerary for 3 Days

south goa

While a lot of restaurants and events are clustered around North Goa, I recommend staying in South Goa for a quieter, slower, closer to nature holiday.

Where to stay in South Goa

Turiya villa.

A tastefully restored Goan house, built over a 100 years ago in the village of Canacona, and restored by the Goan architect Sandesh Prabhu. While close enough to the beaches of Palolem and Patnem, I loved Turiya Villa ‘s slow travel vibe, with hammocks in the old courtyard that just made me want to read and while time away.

Mangaal Farmstay

In a protected area of South Goa, Mangaal Farmstay is a working organic farm that has all the Bali feels. Lush forests, farmlands and old Goan villages where time seems to have stopped. Oh, it even has its own private waterfall, a 1.5 hour trek away!

Hidden away on a hill near the Cabo de Rama Fort, Cabo Serai is an experience unto itself. Accessible only by a short hike, the stunning pinewood and thatched roofed huts are built to leave no trace. On offer are stunning sunset hikes, innovative plant-based food, and thoughtful eco-friendly touches. One of my favorite eco-lodges in India!

*Note that Mangaal Farmstay and Cabo Serai are experiences unto themselves, and located quite far out from the other activities of South Goa.

Where to eat in South Goa

Cantine indienne.

Cantine Indienne is a rustic, farm-to-table eatery in Palolem, run by a French-Tamil couple. They turn the organic oyster mushrooms grown in their backyard into crunchy ‘wings,’ and offer other creative delights like pesserattu  (green mung dosa), beetroot curry, oyster mushroom pickles, and wild spinach and horsegram stir fry. Yum!

Go to Bibhitaki for healthy comfort food inspired by Ayurveda. I love (read drool over) their sumptuous smoothie bowls, and recommend the Mexican Bhel as well as the hearty Mexican and Japanese Buddha bowls. So good.

Explore your goan neighborhood.

Whether you stay in Canacona or elsewhere in South Goa, take the morning to observe and flow with the slow life of Goa. Find out about all churches in your backyard, stop for a chat with Goans on their morning walk, and pick up poi at the local bakery.

Learn about spices and cashews at Tanshikar Organic Farm

South Goa is the land of spices and cashews, and Tanshikar Organic Farm is one of the best places to visit in Goa in 3 days. Spices like black pepper and cardamom are grown organically here, on 25 stunning acres. Stay for a lip-smacking Goan lunch, much of it cooked with organic ingredients!

Have a quiet evening at Patnem beach

While away the evening at the relatively quiet Patnem beach. Swim in the waves, catch the sunset, and walk under the stars with the Arabian Sea humming in your ears.

Go on a hiking adventure.

Hike to a sea cave or go on a moonlit forest walk in the wilderness of South Goa. We did the guided sea cave excursion with Adventure Breaks – which involved a short ocean hike and scrambling over some rocks to reach the west coast’s largest sea cave! An easy one, good for most ages and abilities.

Visit Cabo de Rama Fort

There are plenty of places to visit in Goa in 3 days, but if you pick only one in the south, pick this. Built in the medieval times and last restored during the Portuguese era, the Cabo de Rama Fort is full of history and panoramic views over the Arabian Sea. If you’re up for another walk, a trail winds around the fort, offering panoramas in all directions. If you’re tired, pick your spot for a stunning sunset over the ocean!

Take a surf lesson on agonda beach.

I’m yet to go surfing in South Goa, but surfer friends recommend catching the waves at Agonda Beach for all beginners. Aloha Surf is a popular surf school in the area.

Learn about Goan culture and cuisine at Palacio Do Deao

On the shores of the Kushavati River, travel back to a different era at the 200+ year old mansion that is Palacio De Deao . A blend of Portuguese and Saraswat architectural styles, it’s the perfect place to learn about ancient Goan culture and its Portuguese history, over a sumptuous traditional Goan meal. Advance bookings only.

How to Plan a Trip to Goa

travel partner goa

Best time to visit Goa

Goa is different every season – both in terms of landscapes and crowds. My favorite time is monsoon in Goa (July to September), when the paddies are lush green, it’s not as busy as the rest of the year, and the waterfalls and swimming holes are the most inviting. For surfing and beach life however, the winter months from October to January are ideal.

How to reach Goa

Take the scenic Vista Dome train from Mumbai to Goa, or the Vande Bharat from Bangalore to Karwat. Other places across India are also connected with long train journeys to Margao in South Goa or Thivim in North Goa.

The overnight buses from Mumbai or Bangalore to Goa are convenient for short trips.

The quickest way to get to Goa is to take a flight to Dabolim (GOA) or MOPA (GOX) airport.

How to get around in Goa

There’s a standing joke that almost every shop or house in Goa (especially close to the beaches) can arrange a scooter or taxi! Taxis can be expensive, with short routes costing as much as ₹600-1000. Scooter rentals usually cost ₹300-400 per day, depending on the length of stay. Ask for a newer bike and model. My favorite is an Activa 5G. Alternatively, rent a bicycle or e-bike from Cycling Zens. Cost depends on the duration of rental.

Estimated Cost of a 3 Day Trip in Goa

The cost of a trip to Goa can vary wildly, depending on the budget and comfort level you’re after. Besides accommodation costs, I recommend budgeting atleast ₹5000 per day, including a scooter rental, a mix of cafe and thali meals, and some activities. It is possible to do a Goa budget trip for 3 days if you eliminate any paid hiking, surfing and shopping.

What not to do in Goa

slow travel goa

  • Plan a trip to Goa for 3 days only 😉 The real essence of Goa is in slowing down and spending longer. But if life doesn’t allow that right now, I hope some of the experiences I’ve recommended above will allow you to slow down mentally anyway.
  • Try to cover all ‘must see places in Goa’ in 3 days. Instead of running from one place to the next to try to do everything, pick a few things that really interest you and enjoy them deeply. It’s always nice to have a reason or three to come back.
  • Stay in accommodations that have cut down Goa’s green cover. Sadly, a lot of the fancy villas in Goa fall in this category. I’ve seen it happen before my eyes – they cut down stunning old trees, put in luxury villas and apartments, and raid the local wells for water (delivered by a tanker). Avoid them, please.
  • Photograph people and their homes without permission, especially in Panjim. Fontainhas, Panjim’s charming Latin quarters, has become overrun by impolite tourists climbing into people’s yards, going uninvited into their homes, peeping in through their windows, and photographing them without permission. It’s sad to see signs all over prohibiting photography, and hearing about the animosity local residents now feel towards tourists.
  • Block the road to take the same photos as everyone else. Goa has plenty of pretty, palm-lined by-lanes, but a stretch of road in Parra – popularized by a Bollywood film – has become full of wannabe influencers and selfie-takers, constantly disrupting the flow of traffic.
  • Leave without trying Goan food. I’ve met so many people who’ve been to Goa but have no idea what Goan food is. Sadly authentic Goan food is not as easy available as it should be, but make the effort to try it at a restaurant like Mum’s Kitchen or Kokni Kanteen. Ideally pick a vegan option, that’s kinder to animals, the planet and our own health.
  • Ignore the locals and their quirks. I love that Goans have a strong collective identity, along with quirks that can only be understood once you get to know atleast a handful of them. Staying with a Goan family at Cancio’s House, attending a Goan-centric gathering at the Museum of Goa, or having a meal with local hosts at Palacio Do Deao are some ways to do that over a short period of time.

I used to swear I would never create itineraries on this blog, but multiple friends have convinced me otherwise. This is my first attempt at creating a meaningful 3 day itinerary for Goa, and through it, I hope you too will be able to experience the art of slowness and contentment in a place I love so much.

What do you love most about Goa, or what are you most looking forward to?

Starting from July 02, 2024, all the new flights will operate three times a week on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. These flights have been added to provide more convenient travel options.

The introduction of direct flights between Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and North Goa will drastically cut down travel time from over 14 hours to just 2 hours. Similarly, the new direct flights connecting Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nagpur will trim the journey from nearly 5 hours to 1.5 hours. In addition to these direct routes, customers can now travel from Nagpur to North Goa via Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. With these new flights, IndiGo is enhancing its commitment to offering smooth and convenient travel experiences for passengers while expanding its domestic network.

Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, said: “We are pleased to announce new flights connecting Nagpur, North Goa, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, formerly Aurangabad. These flights will enhance regional connectivity as well as trade and tourism in the region. As India’s leading carrier, we remain committed to providing our customers with seamless connections through the extensive 6E network, across India as well as overseas, while delivering on our promise of providing affordable, on-time, courteous, and hassle-free travel experiences.”

Located in the state of Maharashtra, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, formerly Aurangabad, is a perfect destination for history lovers. Known to be the tourism capital of Maharashtra, this city has some of the most famous cave temples and also offers rich Mughlai cuisine which are sure to treat your taste buds. The city has a rich cultural heritage and is home to several historical monuments, including the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Ajanta and Ellora Caves. It is also an important hub for trade and commerce and is rapidly developing into a modern metropolis while retaining its traditional charm.

Christened as the ‘Orange City’, Nagpur has a rich cultural heritage and is home to several historical landmarks, including the Deekshabhoomi, which is a Buddhist monument and the largest stupa in Asia. Nagpur is also famous for its cuisine, which includes spicy street food and delicious sweets. The city is an important commercial and industrial hub, with a thriving textile industry and a growing IT sector.

Goa, once a Portuguese colony, is now one of the prominent tourist hubs in India. The New Goa Airport, located in the Mopa village, provides enhanced connectivity to one of the most happening travel destinations of all seasons, which attracts tourists from across the globe.

I went on one date with a man, and then we decided to travel together indefinitely. It's not as romantic as it seems.

  • While traveling full time, I joined a dating app and went on a date; we fell for each other.
  • Since we have similar values, we decided to travel together indefinitely.
  • It's been difficult at times, and our future is uncertain, but it's the perfect life for us.

Insider Today

Last year, I finally fulfilled my dream of traveling full time when I got a job aboard a cruise ship. I was loving every moment of my nomadic life. I was too busy enjoying myself to worry about a relationship.

But in my second year of the job and third year of being single, I joined the Nomad Soulmates dating app . I wasn't necessarily looking for my soulmate because travel was my priority for most of my life. But at 32, I knew I had to make a proactive choice to prioritize relationships and dating.

In April 2023, I disembarked the ship in Lisbon and tried out the app. I was skeptical it would lead anywhere because I only had two months off the ship before I had to head to Norway to join my next contract. Plus, I had already scheduled my travel plans for the next two months.

But then I matched with someone that made me rethink everything.

We had an instant connection

I matched with a man who was in Lisbon for the month. He asked me out for Greek food, and I figured it was worth a try. Once again, I didn't imagine it would go anywhere because I planned to stay for only a week before heading to Porto for the weekend and then off to Spain for the next leg of my trip .

But our date ended up being so much fun that I was interested in seeing where it could go. He was silly, and that was refreshing. We shared many of the same values and loved traveling, so the conversation never lagged.

I surprised myself when I invited him to stay with me for a few nights in Porto. During our visit to Porto, I canceled my trip to Spain and accepted his invitation to return to Lisbon with him, beginning our partnership.

We decided to keep traveling together

I had to choose between my travel plans and my partner . Having been a solo traveler, giving up my travel plans for something that might not work out wasn't a decision I took lightly.

But I wanted to take a chance as we found ourselves on the same page about everything — especially what we were looking for in a long-term relationship and what we wanted in the future. I never saw myself returning to the US; I wanted to return to Italy or continue traveling full time with my future partner and kids. He also had no plans on returning to his home country of Germany and, having been traveling full time since 2018, was uninterested in stopping. He also wants children and plans to travel with them full time.

I saw that we were on the same page regarding how we wanted to incorporate parenting, traveling, and our careers, so we decided to continue traveling together — which was a decision we made exceptionally quickly.

I was fearful at the beginning of our relationship because I heard horror stories from friends about traveling with partners they just met. Luckily, being seasoned travelers , we face inconveniences quite similarly and calmly. Within the last year, we've dealt with being separated for months at a time and spending every second together for months at a time. We've also experienced missed flights, scooter accidents, cockroach infestations, and a lack of necessities such as hot water. It's not all romance and dreamy vacations.

Like so many other relationships I've had, I thought each new inconvenience would fracture our relationship, causing us to decide that maybe this wasn't the right partnership for us. But it all had the opposite effect, building the foundation of our relationship as we moved into the second year of traveling full time together.

Bound by wanderlust , we aren't sure what our futures hold, but we'll sculpt it with our shared dreams.
