Citizens of these countries do not require advance visa arrangements to enter the UAE and can obtain a visa upon arrival for 30 days with a 10-day grace period for extension.

Green visa for work.

Depending on your profession, there are different criteria for working in the UAE. Generally, however, the Green Visa is a residency document that lets you stay in the country for up to five years, and you don’t need to be sponsored or employed by a UAE citizen.

Freelancers or self-employed people

• You’ll need a freelance or self-employment permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation
• proof of a bachelor’s degree or a specialized diploma
• evidence of annual income from self-employment for the previous two years amounting to not less than AED 360,000, or proof of financial solvency throughout their stay in the UAE.

Skilled employees

• You must have a valid employment contract
• Be classified in the first, second, or third occupational level as per the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation
• Hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent
• Have a salary of not less than AED 15,000 per month.

Standard work visa

• You must be employed in the private or government sector
• Your UAE employer must apply on your behalf.

Retirement Visa

The UAE’s retirement visa is similar to Portugal’s D7 visa . It lets you live in the UAE for up to five years and can be extended if you satisfy the criteria.

Visa Requirements

• You must be older than 55 years or,
• have worked for not less than 15 years inside or outside the UAE
• own a property of no less than AED 1 million or,
• have financial savings of no less than AED 1 million or,
• have a monthly income of AED 20,000
• Provide bank statements for the last six months.

Golden Visa for UAE

The UAE Golden Visa is a long-term residency program that offers eligible applicants, such as talented individuals, real estate investors, and business owners, the opportunity to live, work, or study in the United Arab Emirates.

The program provides several benefits, including a renewable five to ten-year residence permit, no requirement to obtain a resident or national sponsor, a reduced minimum stay requirement compared to other visa options, the ability to sponsor family members and domestic helpers, and zero personal income taxes.

General visa requirements

The requirements for the UAE Golden Visa system depend on the applicant’s professional background. However, there are several minimum requirements that all prospective applicants must meet, which are:

• Provide a notarized copy of their passport
• Have a clean criminal record
• Be clear of all socially dangerous illnesses
• Have valid medical insurance

Visa requirements for real estate investors

Foreign nationals who own real estate in the United Arab Emirates may be granted a renewable residence visa valid for ten years. The requirement to get a UAE Golden Visa as a real estate investor is that:

• The applicant can present the provision of a letter from the Department of Land and Property of the respective emirate national stating that they own one or more properties in the UAE to the value of no less than two million UAE Dirhams (about $545,000)
• A permission letter from the Dubai land department or other emirate where the property is located

A property can be purchased with a loan of no more than 50 percent of the property’s value from specific local banks approved by a competent local entity, such as the Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank. A Dubai Golden Visa for real estate investors provides a ten-year residency visa.

Visa requirements for investors

Foreign investors have three types of investments besides real estate eligible under the Golden UAE residence visa program–investor (partner), bank deposit, and tax collection. The requirements to obtain a residence visa under one of these options are as follows:

Investor (partner)

• The trade permit with the partner’s appendix
• The financial report of the establishment/s for the last tax year
• A verified certificate from the free zone (business jurisdiction) that includes all the investor’s financial information
• A financial statement of the establishment for the last six months
• The registration document from the Federal Tax Authority in the UAE stating that the company’s transactions amount to no less than AED 100,000 (about $27,000) annually
• Proof of property ownership (if applicable)

Bank deposit

• Present documentation proving an AED two million deposit in a UAE bank account such as First Abu Dhabi Bank and prove that the investor owns the invested capital completely. It may be a UAE-accredited investment fund by the Ministry of Finance or Sukuk .
• Proof of residence in the Emirate of Dubai

Tax collection

• Documentation from the Federal Tax Authority confirming partnership in one or several establishments and proof of taxes paid to the UAE government; Annual tax contributions must be no less than AED 250,000 (about $68,000).
• A valid commercial license with the partner’s appendix

Other Golden Visa Categories

Other than the two methods outlined above, there are a few more ways to get a valid visa under the long-term residency program.

• Entrepreneurs who own a business or startup project of a technical or future nature may be granted a Golden Visa UAE, valid for five years.
• People with outstanding specialized talents under the UAE’s Abu Dhabi and Dubai Golden Visa programs can apply to the UAE authorities for a multiple-entry visa.
• Outstanding students at the national level achieving a minimum grade of 95 percent in a public or private secondary school may be eligible for a five-year Golden Visa.
• Outstanding university students of a university in the UAE may be eligible for a ten-year Golden Visa if their cumulative GPA is at least 3.5.
• There is also the opportunity for pioneering humanitarians to receive a UAE Golden Visa.

• Registration fee: AED 160,000 (about $44,000)
• State fees for issuing visas and identity cards: AED 3,860 (about $1,050) per person
• Medical exam: About $220 per person
• Private medical insurance: About $400 per person

Anyone who wishes to apply for a US tourist visa or a US business visa (categories B1 and B2) must first complete the online DS-160 application form.

Here’s how you can do that.

• Visit the Consular Electronic Application Center
• Select your location
• Enter the Captcha code

• Print the DS-160 barcode page and keep it

Please Note:

• Even though an Arabic translation is available for most pages of the form, the online application for a US visa from Dubai should be completed in English.

• The DS-160 application automatically times out after 20 minutes of staying idle. You risk losing any unsaved data on the application when it times out. So, save your information after regular intervals.

STEP 2: PAY THE US VISA FEES FROM DUBAI

The next step in the USA visa application process is to pay the fee and schedule your US visa appointment from Dubai. The US visit visa fee is currently USD 185, approximately AED 680 . Please keep in mind that this AED amount is subject to change.

To pay your USA visa fee from Dubai, here’s what you need to do:

• Visit the US Department of State Visa Appointment Service website
• Create your user account
• Input your DS-160 application confirmation number
• Enter details for your courier document return process
• Pay your non-refundable, nonimmigrant (MRV) USA visa application fee
• Schedule your Consular Section appointment for an interview

Don’t forget to schedule your US visa appointment from Dubai because the embassy will not do it. If you’re applying via a travel agency in Dubai , they may charge you a service fee in addition to the official USA visa fee of USD 185.

STEP 3: GATHER THE DOCUMENTS

To complete your USA visa application in Dubai, you must assemble essential documents that help the consulate/embassy staff evaluate your case. You must submit them just as required to ensure a hassle-free process.

The USA visit visa from Dubai requirements are as follows:

• The confirmation page of the DS-160 form completion
• Your passport with at least one (1) blank page (must be valid for more than six months from your intended date of travel)
• Previous USA visas (if any)
• Receipt of US visa application fee paid
• A recent (taken within the past six months) US Visa photograph. You don’t need one if you’ve already attached a photograph in the DS-160 form.
• A police certificate. You can easily obtain a police clearance certificate in the UAE via the Ministry of Interior (MOI) website and app.

Anyone applying for a US tourist visa must submit the following documents to support their application. 

• A cover letter that details the purpose of your visit
• Bank statements as proof of having enough funds to finance your stay in the US
• US visa invitation letter (optional) from family or friends in the US
• Diploma or transcripts (in case you’re a student)
• Copies of relative’s and/or friend’s status in the US (in case you’re visiting friends/family) 
• Medical report (in case you’re travelling for medical treatment) 

You also need to prove that you have strong ties with your home country (in this case, Dubai). You can prove this with the following documents:

• Proof of family (dependents)
• A property lease or deed
• A valid job contract
• Anything that supports the notion that you will return once your trip ends

People who have an active job must also have the following documents for USA visa application in Dubai

• Letter of employment
• Three months’ pay slips

STEP 4: TAKE THE INTERVIEW

Attending the interview is the last step of the US visa application process in Dubai. Please note that the interview is compulsory for all visa applicants aged 14 to 79. This is the most important step of the process, so don’t take it casually.

Here’s what you need to keep in mind:

• Make sure you’re on time. Your US visa appointment from Dubai will be cancelled if you’re late.
• Take all your application documents; the consulate staff will examine them.

The DS-160, Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application form, is for temporary travel to the United States, and for K (fiancé(e)) visas. Form DS-160 is submitted electronically to the Department of State website via the Internet. Consular Officers use the information entered on the DS-160 to process the visa application and, combined with a personal interview, determine an applicant’s eligibility for a nonimmigrant visa.

Visa applicants must submit a completed DS-160, Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application for all nonimmigrant visa categories, including applicants applying for K visas. ( Note:   For K visa cases in process at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate prior to October 7, 2013, review the limited exceptions explained in the FAQs below.)

Some nationals whose countries are listed with US Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are not required to apply for a visa if their travel plan is of less than 90 days. Others have to meet the requirements for a US tourist visa. This article will guide you on how to get a US Visa in Dubai.

Residents of Dubai seeking visas to the United States must choose from two main visa categories:

• temporary nonimmigrant visa
• Permanent immigrant visas

Each category contains subcategories based on your intended purpose for travelling to the US. It is crucial to select the appropriate visa type for your situation, as applying for the wrong visa will lead to rejection. The entire process for obtaining a US visa in Dubai depends on which type you need.

Those seeking a US visa from the UAE must present their application at either the American Embassy /the Consulate General situated in Dubai. Individuals residing in Dubai itself will be required to apply at the US Consulate General there.

Some facts about US visitor or tourist visa

A US visa can be obtained for several purposes such as employment, medical treatment, family visit and functions, special events, or for tourism. If your intention of travel is tourism, pleasure visit, or vacation, then you have to apply for a B2 visa. The B2 visa will allow you to visit the country as a tourist. It will not be valid for employment or educational purpose. You can stay in the US for a maximum of six months with this visa. It is also eligible for an extension of six months subject to approval. Note that the granting of a tourist visa will solely rest on the US Embassy in Dubai, and allowing an entry to the city with the immigration authorities at the airport.

Steps to get a US visa in Dubai

1. get a latest photograph.

You have to be ready with a recent digital photograph when applying for a US tourist visa . Visit a nearest photo studio and get yourself clicked. But before that, know the following requirements necessary to meet:

• Shape: The shape of the digital photograph has to square • Color: Your image must be in color with white background • Dimension: The digital image has to be of 600 pixels x 600 pixels in dimension minimum. The      maximum dimension can go up to 1200 pixels by 1200 pixels • Format: The image must be in JPEG format • File size: The file should be too heavy to unload and print. It must be less than or equal to 240 kilobytes

2: Fill and submit DS-160 application form

Form DS-160 is an online visa application to be filled by non-immigrants applying for a tourist visa. It is common for all the citizens worldwide. The form has to be filled by yourself only. When taking help of someone for completing the form, you still have to electronically sign by clicking the tab “Sign Application.”

Get your digital photograph file, passport details, family details, address you will be staying at US, name of the relatives in US, if any, and address of the consulate you will be appearing for an interview with you when filling the online visa application. All the information provided by you has to be complete and true and try to attend all the fields. Upload the digital photograph, and save the application before clicking on the “SUBMIT” button.

3: Pay the visa application fee

A few branches of the National Bank of Abu Dhabi are authorized by the Consulate General of the United States to collect payment for the visa application fee. For applicants applying from Dubai, the US Consulate in Dubai has appointed a few agencies to collect the visa payment. At the time of payment, you have to present your passport at the bank you are making the payment to. The application form should be accompanied with both the copies (pink and blue) of the payment receipt.

4: Schedule an interview appointment

All UAE citizens are required to make an online visa appointment with the consular officer. Each applicant, whether minor or major, must have his or her visa appointment before appearing for an interview. Children below 14 years of age don’t have to appear for the interview. Their parents can appear on their behalf.

5: Attend the visa interview as per scheduled

Reach at the designated U.S. Consulate in time. Once your application documents are loaded into the computer system, a number will be provided to you. After that you will have to go for fingerprinting and wait for the interview until your number is called. The interview will last for 5 minutes maximum in which you have to answer the questions of the Consular Officer. Based on your interview and verification of all the supporting documents, you will be informed if your application is approved, refused, or pending.

How to get an ESTA

New ‘Grand Visa' Will Allow Tourists To Easily Visit These 6 Gulf Countries

From underdeveloped arid landscapes with little to offer to the oil capital of the world (and fastest-growing development zone), Gulf countries draw in hundreds of millions of tourists every year, who flock to the likes of Dubai , Abu Dhabi and Riyadh for their opulent resorts and futuristic cityscapes .

Despite their popularity, there remains one major obstacle to tourists traveling in the area, and that is the different entry requirements and visa policies, which can vary from country to country, making multi-destination trips harder to plan compared to, say, Europe.

While the United Arab Emirates allow Americans to enter visa-free, Saudi Arabia requires them to apply for an eVisa, and that's only one example: despite being regional partners, the Gulf countries have never agreed on a common set of tourism policies .

By the end of the year, a new ‘grand visa' will allow tourists to country-hop around the Gulf with little to no bureaucracy, and it looks set to revolutionize travel across the Arab world:

New Unified Tourist Visa For The Gulf States

As confirmed by local news outlets , all six countries participating in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) will introduce a ‘unified' tourist visa by the end of 2024 , the countries in question being:

• Saudi Arabia
• United Arab Emirates

While further details have not yet been divulged, the idea is that once it is launched, the tourist visa will be accepted in all destinations listed above, allowing its holder to enter any of them so long as it remains valid.

The purpose is to support and develop tourism across the entire Gulf , where a host of new destinations is launching in the next decade, including a resort zone in Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast, recently touted as the Middle Eastern Caribbean .

It is expected that, with more tourists coming and feeling encouraged to explore the Gulf beyond just Dubai, revenue will grow much faster, and the dreaded visa bureaucracy that still affects certain foreign nationals arriving in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain will be reduced.

How Do Gulf Countries Compare?

For instance, Saudi Arabia expects Americans to get an eVisa to the staggering tune of $117 per application; Bahrain's is more affordable, with prices starting from only $43, and Kuwait's is negligibly-cheap, at only $9.80, but it doesn't mean they're less bureaucratic .

eVisa applications typically involve filling out long, detailed forms, where you'll be asked for personal information, uploading passport-style photos, and answering a series of security questions.

While it's far simpler than a Consulate-handled visa process, it's a hassle nonetheless.

Americans enjoy visa-free entry to the UAE, Oman, or Qatar, but entry and stay regulations differ: landing in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or any UAE hub grants them a 30-day stay, and the same goes for Qatar.

In Oman, however, they're issued a restrictive 14-day entry permit upon arrival, hardly enough time to see all it has to offer, from the ancient desert cities with origins lost to time, to the pristine Omani coastline, fringed by a turquoise Arabic Sea.

How Will The Unified Visa Work?

The new visa aims to get rid of all these discrepancies, and smoothen the travel experience across the territory.

It will also do away with the different entry and stay regulations, setting a minimum 30-day period for tourists to remain , a move that has drawn to comparisons to Europe's well-loved (yet at the same time fiercely criticized) Schengen Area.

In Europe, the Schengen Agreement has helped abolish border controls between signatory states.

This has reduced bureaucracy in the scope of intra-Europe travel, and has facilitated integration, and the free flow of good and people across the continent.

The only downside for tourists?

They are only allowed to stay in the territories of the member states for 90 days out of any 180-day period.

In other words, if you've spent a full 3 continuous months in France, you can't then travel onward to Italy, even though it's a different country, as both apply the Schengen acquis , and Italian authorities will refuse you entry as your 90 days are already up.

With 29 countries having joined Schengen, with two new additions this year in Bulgaria and Romania, you can see how it spells bad news for long-term travelers, who have less options to remain legally in Europe long-term every passing year.

Now, the Gulf countries are not exactly known as long-term travel destinations, but digital nomads and slow travelers who split their time between the six states have a good reason to be concerned about the curtailment of their time in the area.

After all, if we're talking a Schengen-style, 30-day long visa applicable to all Gulf countries, if you've spent a whole month in Dubai, you are no longer eligible to travel to a different country like Bahrain or Oman to renew your tourist visa.

So far, similarities between the grand Gulf visa and the Schengen Area have not been established.

We don't know whether the Gulf states are forming a single travel area without border checks traveling internally, either, though further unification seems to be the goal.

According to Riyadh spokesperson Yasser Hakim, introducing a unified visa is ‘just one step' in the long road to economic integration, with a euro-inspired ‘single currency' set to be the next move.

This would be a long-term plan .

Will Current Visa Policies Be Replaced?

What about the bilateral visa agreements signed between individual Gulf states and other countries?

You may be wondering whether Americans will still be eligible to travel visa-free to the UAE, for example, if a new Schengen-modeled tourist visa is being introduced, or whether this means the Gulf states are simply forming a borderless travel zone Americans will be able to enter visa-free.

Once again, more information is needed, and we don't have the answers to those questions yet , though we will be sure to report back as soon as we find out more.

While the official date of the unified isn't yet announced, current visa rules applying to foreign travelers based on their nationality continue to apply.

• Add 5 years to the printed expiry date shown on your passport and enter it in the expiry date field of the application form.
• Include a letter of explanation with your application stating: “I am a Venezuelan national with a Venezuelan passport, which has been extended for 5 years”.

Warning: If your passport is still expired after adding 5 years to the printed expiry date, your passport is considered expired. You’re not eligible to submit an application with that passport.

Faster visitor visa processing for spousal applicants

If you’re being sponsored for permanent residence (PR) by your spouse or partner, you could benefit from faster processing for a visitor visa.

You may be eligible if you

• submitted an application to be sponsored for permanent residence
• received an acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) that confirms the application is in progress

Applications that need more information, for example custody documents for a child, will take longer to process.

When your sponsor receives the AOR for your permanent residence application, you can apply for a visitor visa. If you’re eligible, your visitor visa application will automatically receive faster processing. You don’t need to request it.

You must still meet all of the requirements to be eligible for a visitor visa .

To qualify, you must show that:

To apply for a visitor visa to join a vessel as a marine crew member (seafarer) , you must

The world’s most expensive visas for UK holidaymakers

Each year, the Henley Passport Index measures the number of countries travellers can visit visa-free. 

The UK usually ranks reasonably highly : in 2024, with 192 countries visitable visa-free, it came third, level with Denmark and Belgium.

France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore and Spain are all, collectively, the most powerful, with their passport-holders able to visit 194 without the documentation. While the rankings rarely shift dramatically, Britain’s post-Brexit position means that our travel habits may have to change soon – travel to Europe will, eventually, necessitate the purchase of an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) waiver, valid for three years. 

Such schemes have allowed easier – and cheaper – travel to countries that are perceived as UK allies.

In 2008, the US Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) was introduced in the US – a visa waiver scheme that, subject to security checks, allows the residents of 41 nations to enter the country.

It currently costs around $21, or £17, but if holidaymakers are unable to meet the ESTA criteria, a full visa may be required, at the price of up to $185 (£145).

Similar waiver schemes exist for UK travellers to New Zealand and Canada. And those international relationships can result in some surprising border regulations: in Sri Lanka , almost all travellers require a visa, apart from those based in Hong Kong, Maldives, Seychelles, Singapore and – the only European entry – the Czech Republic, as a result of reciprocity. 

In the countries that the UK does require a visa for, prices vary wildly and are often subject to change. The time between application and the trip, plus the length of the trip itself, can result in vastly inflated fees: meaning travellers are advised to apply well in advance.  

At the lower end of the scale, a visa for Nepal will set British holidaymakers back around £25; Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Bhutan roughly £31. Travellers to the latter should note that while the travel document cost is small, its tourist fee currently sits at $100 (£78) per day.

For the African countries that require UK visas (such as Ethiopia and Sierra Leone), the price typically varies from around £40 to £60.

Exceptions include Niger and Ghana (both £100), and Nigeria, which is among the most expensive for British travellers at £113. 

Other steep fees include the newly tourist-focused Saudi Arabia , at £108, and India, at £127. China charges UK residents a minimum of £151. And countries that the FCDO specifically warns against travelling to, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and Iran, have similarly high prices, at £135 and £185 respectively. Conversely, most South and Central American countries allow visa-free travel for between a month and 90 days. 

That isn’t to say it is necessarily easy to acquire these visas. While most embassies now offer electronic versions – negating the need for an in-person visit – their websites can be difficult to navigate or hard to verify their authenticity. Others, such as Turkmenistan, require visitors to present a “letter of introduction” as part of the application process.

Then there is the risk of visa purchasing websites, purporting to be an official source of border documentation, which often mimic the style of the real visa websites and upcharge potential travellers: providing them with the visa, while also adding service fees for themselves. Countries that see very few British travellers are not, understandably, set up to facilitate such requests.

People visiting Guinea-Bissau , for example, require a visa unless they live in one of the 14 surrounding west African nations, but information on how to acquire one as a UK visitor is scarce (one estimate, however, has the cost at £207, making it the most expensive in the world for British travellers). 

There are, of course, reciprocal schemes for inbound tourists. Holidaymakers from the European Union, the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, South Korea and Singapore are able to visit the UK visa-free.

Those who are not exempt – including places such as India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Thailand are charged £115 for a standard visitor visa, which allows entry into the country for a maximum of six months.

The high cost has been slammed by industry experts: in 2022, when the charge rose 5 per cent to £100, a spokesperson for UKInbound called the charges “uncompetitive” and “incredibly detrimental economic impact on the UK inbound tourism sector.” Since then, the cost has only increased. 

It is out of step with the cost of travelling to Europe more generally, although the Schengen area fee rose on June 11 from €80 (£68) to €90 (£76). The European Commission cited rising inflation within its member states as the cause.

Travellers from South Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and China, then, should brace for changes; those who are entitled to 90 days in the Schengen area , like the US, Canada, Australia and the UK remain exempt. Regardless of one’s country of origin, it pays to check for surprising visa fees before travel.
