Sailings for Winter/Spring 2024 (January through April/May) were announced on December 7, 2022. They went on sale for Platinum Castaway Club members on December 12, 2022, Gold members on December 13, Silver members and DVC members on December 14, and everyone else on December 15.

Pixar Day at Sea and Marvel Day at Sea 2024 cruise dates (January through March) were announced on February 2, 2023.

Sailings for Summer 2024 (June through September) were announced on March 23, 2023. They went on sale for Platinum Castaway Club members on March 27, Gold members on March 28, Silver members and DVC members on March 29, and everyone else on March 30.

Sailings for Winter 2024 (October through December, and a few early 2025 itineraries) were announced on June 13, 2023. They went on sale for Pearl Castaway Club members on June 19,  Platinum Castaway Club members on June 20, Gold members on June 21, Silver members, Adventures Insiders and DVC members on June 22, and everyone else on June 26.

Inaugural sailings for the Disney Treasure (Late December) were announced on September 5, 2023. They went on sale for Pearl Castaway Club members on September 12, 2023, Platinum Castaway Club members on September 13, Gold members on September 14, DVC and Adventures By Disney Insiders on September 18, Silver members on September 19, and everyone else on September 20.

Disney Cruise Line announces their cruise dates and itineraries for only a few months at a time: January through April, then May through September and finally, September through December. Once the new itineraries come out, booking begins just a day or two later, first to Castaway Club members (people who’ve been on a previous Disney cruise) and then to the general public.

The people who book earliest almost always get the lowest possible price . Sometimes there will be last-minute deals via the restricted guarantee fares or Florida Resident fares , but only a small percentage of cruises ever have those fares, and those fares aren’t always cheaper than opening day fares. In addition, early bookers get first dibs on staterooms, making it the best way to land one of the hardest-to-get staterooms like the Secret Porthole and Secret Verandah rooms. Lots of people know about these advantages, so on the days the new itineraries become available for booking, both the phone lines and website get slammed.

There’s an easy way to avoid the scramble to book on the first day the bookings open:  submit a request to Small World Vacations now. You just need basic information like where you want to go (Caribbean, Alaska, Norway, Europe, etc.), the date range you want, the kind of stateroom you want (inside, outside, verandah) and the names and ages of the people going. Let them know if you are a Castaway Club Member by including your Member Number and Level (Platinum, Gold or Silver). You can add other preferences or priorities as needed – early dining, lower deck, upper deck, not over a nightclub – whatever is important to you.  Their agents will review your request, contact you to confirm they understand your priorities, and then you can relax and let your personal agent book your cruise when the time comes. Your agent will provide their email and direct phone number, so you can discuss your options and preferences.

On the day the itineraries become available for your Castaway Club level, your agent will be up bright and early while you sleep in (or go about your usual day). If Disney releases a cruise that fits your criteria, your agent will typically go ahead and put a hold in place, thus reserving your stateroom(s), then email you with your cruise details and deposit information. You’ll be able to have your choice of room type and location and will lock in the opening day price. If later on you decide to change rooms on the same sailing, Disney will give you the opening day price on the new room , even if the price has gone up in the intervening days or months. 

Even if you aren’t 100% sure whether you’re going to be able to go, there’s no real risk in getting a cruise booked early . Disney Cruise Line deposits for any stateroom types other than Concierge are fully refundable up to the Payment In Full date, which is 120-75 days before sailing, depending on the specific cruise and time of year. You have lots of time to figure out whether that cruise will work for you. If it doesn’t, you can get the deposit back or just transfer it to a different sailing date that works better.

Unique cruises, adventures by disney cruise packages, disney vacation club cruises, independence day, halloween on the high seas, thanksgiving, very merrytime cruises (christmas), new year’s eve.

On sailings that include July 4th, there is usually a special celebration with characters dressed in red, white and blue outfits. There has not been a special fireworks show in the past, but sometimes on sailings in the Caribbean or Bahamas they move pirate night to July 4th so they will have fireworks on Independence Day. (There is no pirate night or fireworks on sailings outside the Caribbean and Bahamas.)

During this period there will be special Halloween events onboard, including Halloween-themed parties, storytellings, movies and elaborate décor, including The Pumpkin Tree, which magically transforms throughout the cruise. You will also find characters dressed in Halloween costumes, as well as a costume party for families and, just for adults, a costume contest and a Villainous Takeover on the dance floor in the nighttime entertainment district.

In the past there has not been any special menu for Halloween night itself, over and above what they do on all the Halloween themed cruises during the whole period, but there will be some special Halloween-themed treats.

Halloween on the High Seas takes place on the following sail dates:

• Disney Fantasy : September 14 – October 26
• Disney Magic : September 9 – October 31
• Disney Wish: September 13 – October 28
• Disney Wonder :  (Not yet announced)

In the past there has been a special menu on Thanksgiving Day, and pictures with Pilgrim Mickey and Minnie. The Christmas decorations will be fully up by Thanksgiving, and there will be a full set of holiday activities and events.

The following sailings include Thanksgiving Day (November 28, 2024).

• Disney Dream : 5-Night Bahamian on November 27
• Disney Fantasy : 7-Night Eastern Caribbean on November 23
• Disney Magic : 6-Night Western Caribbean on November 25
• Disney Wish: 4-Night Bahamian on November 25
• Disney Wonder : 5-Night Australian on November 24 ( note: since New Zealand & Australia don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, we don’t know if there will be a Thanksgiving Menu. )

Typically, Christmas decorations will be up from early November through the final New Year’s sailing, and there will be special holiday events during that whole period, including meet and greets with Santa Claus and with Disney characters in special Christmas outfits. Some of the more elaborate Christmas decorations, including a huge, real gingerbread house or other gingerbread decoration, will not be up until later in November.

Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island, will be transformed with “snow” flurries, a Christmas tree and more. Be on the lookout for Mr. and Mrs. Snowman, dressed in their island attire. Plus, the island’s tram is decorated to resemble a reindeer, complete with antlers and a tail.

Very Merrytime Christmas-themed cruises will be offered on sailings departing between the following dates:

• Disney Dream: November 14 – December 21
• Disney Fantasy: November 10 – December 22
• Disney Magic: November 21 – December 23
• Disney Wish: November 4 – December 23
• Disney Wonder:   (Not yet announced)

There are unique special events and a special menu on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The following sailings include Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (December 24-25, 2024).

• Disney Dream : 5-Night Western Caribbean on December 21
• Disney Fantasy : 4-Night Bahamian on December 22
• Disney Magic : 6-Night Western Caribbean on December 23
• Disney Treasure : 7-Night Eastern Caribbean on December 21
• Disney Wish:  4-Night Bahamian on December 23
• Disney Wonder : 4-Night Australian on December 24

There is a special party with countdown and balloon drop on New Year’s Eve.

Pixar Day at Sea

Pixar Day at Sea includes a Pixar film festival; photo opportunities with Pixar characters; a character breakfast with Woody, Jesse and Bullseye; a theatrical performance based on Coco ; a Pixar-themed dinner; a dance party with Pixar characters; and a nighttime spectacular featuring the Incredibles.

Pixar Day at Sea will take place on select Disney Fantasy 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral in early 2024. The Eastern Caribbean cruises are January 6, 20; February 3, 17 and March 2. The Western Caribbean cruises are January 13, 27; February 10 and 24.  

Marvel Day at Sea is a special all-day celebration of the Marvel Universe. Special features include multiple Marvel character meet-and-greets, Marvel-themed activities for families, Marvel movie screenings, a costume party, special merchandise and food, and an exclusive Marvel deck party. There is also an adults-only dance party with Star-Lord and Gamora.

Marvel Day at Sea will take place on select Disney Dream 5-night Western Caribbean cruises from Fort Lauderdale on January 7, 12, 21, 26; February 4, 9, 18, 23; March 3 and 8. 

Star Wars Day at Sea cruises generally feature a full day of Star Wars celebrations, including a deck party, meet-and-greets with favorite characters, Star Wars -themed youth activities, at-sea screenings of Star Wars films, unique food and beverage offerings, and special merchandise. The night before Star Wars Day at Sea, Darth Vader and Stormtroopers march into the ship’s atrium for an Imperial takeover.

Guests are encouraged to bring their costumes and participate in the costume celebration held in the ship’s atrium. Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique offers special makeovers on Star Wars Day at Sea. Kids ages 3-12 can transform into Rey, Kylo Ren, Leia and Poe. Adults and teens, can get a Rey makeover that includes a stylish dress, makeup and hair style or choose from one of four Star Wars-themed T-shirt options. All come with a personalized name tag, lanyard with medallion and magnet set.

No Star Wars Day at Sea dates have been announced for 2024. Star Wars Day at Sea appears to have been replaced with Pixar Day at Sea, but DCL has not made an official announcement one way or the other.

Double Dip Cruises

A “Double Dip” sailing is one that visits Castaway Cay or Lighthouse Point twice on the same cruise, or goes to both of them on the same cruise. Many people (including us) feel the day at one of Disney’s private beaches is the highlight of a Bahamian or Caribbean cruise, and this gives you a double dose! Both days follow the typical Castaway Cay & Lighthouse Point schedule: off the ship at 8:30 am (depending on sea conditions), and all aboard at 4:45 pm. The same excursions and activities will be available both days, though if you want to do the same activity or book a cabana for both days, you’ll need to book each day separately. If you are going to Castaway Cay twice, you can run the Castaway Cay 5K twice!

In the rare event that the ship visits Castaway Cay or Lighthouse Point two days in a row, the ship will not stay docked overnight. It will leave the island at the usual time on the first day and come back the next morning.

Double Dip cruises scheduled so far for 2024:

• Disney Dream : March 17
• Disney Magic : July 1, July 15, July 29, August 12
• Disney Fantasy : Jun 8 (technically a triple-dip!), July 20, July 25

Repositioning is when a cruise starts in one port and finishes in another. These cruises can be a good deal, as they usually are cheaper per night than conventional round-trip cruises. They also tend to go to more unusual locations. The longest repositioning cruises are the Panama Canal and Transatlantic cruises, which are almost always the cheapest cruises (per night) of the whole year.

Unique cruises have an itinerary that is different from other cruise itineraries that particular ship is sailing around that time. They either visit an unusual location or locations or visit a unique combination of common locations. Repositioning cruises are all unique as well.

The Adventures by Disney Cruise Packages include 2 Adventures by Disney guides available onboard and in port; special VIP privileges; private onboard receptions; unique onshore activities; early debarkation at each port; all meals, snacks and water while in port; a photo CD with all ship photographer pictures, all Adventures by Disney guide photos and an Adventures by Disney slideshow.

DVC member cruises are only open to Disney Vacation Club members who have purchased at least some of their vacation points directly from Disney (rather than from another member via resale). Members can use their vacation points to book the cruise or can pay cash rates. Typically DVC cruises are significantly more expensive than similar cruises for the general public, but guests will be given a wide variety of DVC special gifts and will get to experience some exclusive member events including talks by special guests including artists, imagineers and/or actors from classic Disney movies.

Whether the DVC member cruise is worth booking is a personal judgment call. The extra events are difficult or impossible to experience any other way. The various DVC gifts are usually a mix of the usual kinds of tote bags, pens, and so forth you can get by attending a DVC meeting or buying a new DVC contract, plus at least a few special and unique items. Some people love the DVC member cruises and try to go on each one. Others go once and feel it’s not worth the extra money.

Disney Cruise Line has announced two Disney Vacation Club (DVC) member cruises for 2024:

• May 18: 7-night Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona on Disney Dream
• June 14: 5-night “triple dip” Bahamian cruise with two visits to Lighthouse Point and one visit to Castaway Cay on Disney Magic

Adventure by Disney Pre- and Post-Cruise Escape Packages take place before and after select Disney Cruise Line sailings. These 2- to 3-night Escapes include 2 Adventure by Disney guides; hotel accommodations; multiple, daily excursions; special VIP privileges; all transportation during the trip and a photo CD with all the Adventure by Disney guide photos.

Book Early with Disney Cruise Line to Save Money

Not only will booking early guarantee that you'll get the stateroom of your choice, but typically, booking early can save you hundreds. We recommend following Disney Cruise Line or a Disney travel agent on social media to stay up to date on when new sailings and itineraries are released. Booking early also allows you to have top pick of available staterooms. 

Get a Last Minute Deal with Disney Cruise Line

This is a bit risky, but if your schedule is flexible and you don't need to be guaranteed anything specific(sailing date, cruise ship, stateroom number, etc) you can sometimes find great deals at the last minute, when Disney Cruise Line is trying to fill up the ship before setting sail.  We've seen some amazing deals! Sail the Off Season

Want to really Save money on a Disney Cruise Vacation? A lot of people ask, when is the off season? Well that really depends on where you are going. When you choose the location you'd like to cruise to, look to see what is considered their "off season" and see if those dates are doable to your trip. For example, cruising to the Caribbean during hurricane season, though risky, will cost you a lot less.  Alaska will always be cheaper at the beginning and ending of the cruising season there, typically late May and early October. Book with a Travel Agent

Did you know booking with an authorized travel planner can get you insider deals, discounts and tips? While a Disney Cruise may not be as complicated as the parks, we ALWAYS recommend booking a Disney Cruise with a Disney Travel Agent. Especially if this is your first cruise, we highly recommend booking your Disney Cruise with a travel agent . Skip the Porthole or Verandah Room

Wait, what? Who even are we?! If you've read our previous Disney cruise posts , then you've likely heard how we love having a porthole in our stateroom. But if we had to choose between having a porthole or not going on a Disney cruise at all, we'd happily skip the porthole. The difference between a porthole room and an inside stateroom can mean hundreds of dollars that can be used for excursions, onboard expenses or just money saved! And if you're on a larger boat, the Disney Dream or the Disney Fantasy, the inside state rooms there have magical portholes, which are super fun and help keep you from feeling closed in. 

Book Your Disney Cruise Stateroom through Expedia

One of our favorite tricks for booking Disney resorts at a discount is by using a third party. And believe it or not, you can actually use this same idea to save a lot of money on a Disney Cruise. By booking through Expedia , you can save hundreds on a stateroom and if you pay with a Mastercard, you can even earn onboard credit(select dates apply) to apply towards excursions, tips, spa services or anything else your cruise loving heart desires onboard.  And to save even more with Expedia, be sure to shop through Rakuten for cash back .

This trick is not nearly as common as it used to be. Most of the cruises at the moment are selling out with no need for Disney to put them on a third party site. But it doesn't hurt to check!

Pay for your Disney Cruise with Discounted Disney Gift Cards

One of the absolute easiest ways to save money on any Disney destination is by paying with discounted gift cards. Many stores including BJ's, Sam's Club and Costco sell discounted gift cards that can save you a ton of money.  Have a Target RedCard? You can use your 5% discount on Disney gift cards. 5% may not seem like much but it can definitely add up, especially when purchasing something as expensive as a Disney Cruise. 

We also have a local grocery store that gives you free gas for purchasing gift cards, so we can usually get a few free tanks of gas by purchasing gift cards through them. Either way, its a win and definitely a tactic you should be using for your Disney destinations! And you can do this whether or not you're using a travel agent for your cruise; which makes it very easy to save money! Skip the Onboard Disney Cruise Internet Package

Do you really need internet while at sea? Aren't you supposed to be on vacation ?  Ok, ok we get it. Seeing how we run an online business and this blog, we can see how internet could definitely be a necessity, especially if you're taking a longer cruise and just can't afford to take that much time away. But if you don't need internet, we highly recommend signing up for the free 50MB they give you for signing up on the first day, using it sparingly and vowing not to purchase any more.

The internet onboard is expensive, will get used a lot faster than you think it will and not that great. And trust us, your friends on social media can wait. This will save you HUGE amounts of money, and time as you stumble around trying to find the best "wi-fi" spot on the ship. Definitely not worth the frustration. 

Take Advantage of Special Disney Cruise Line offers

All you long you can find Disney Cruise Line special discounts. While some are for Florida Residents and Military Families, others are for Disney+ Plus Subscribers and special destinations. Be sure to keep an eye on these discounts as they can usually save you hundreds. And if you're working with a travel agent, they can keep an eye on this for you too! Just check out the special discounts page as you're planning. 

Book with the Onboard Offer with Disney Cruise Line

When onboard a Disney Cruise, you can book a future cruise with an onboard offer that they offer to every passenger onboard. You can save 10% off a future cruise and get a discount on your deposit down. Not sure when you can cruise again? Book a placeholder, which will still give you the all the discounts but with no commitment on a date of sailing. When you figure out your dates, just call back in and they will book the rest for you!   

This has actually become super easy because it's now all done in the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app! Just go into your navigator before you disembark and click "Book a Future Cruise". You'll make a deposit of $250 and then they'll send you a confirmation number that you can use to book a cruise when you've decided on a date. Right now you can even use that to book a cruise on the Disney Wish ! Only one offer per person, per address is allowed. So, if you're traveling with other adults, but want a placeholder cruise of your own, just be sure your Disney account is assigned to a different address. 

Bring your Own Beverages

Beer, wine, bottled water. These expenses can add up quickly onboard and you are allowed to bring your own, to an extent and with certain restrictions. Check out the Disney Cruise Line Alcohol Policy for details. You can also bring your own bottled water onboard and although some people don't find it necessary, if you feel you're a big water drinker you may want to consider it. The water stations onboard are free to use, however are only at the upper deck on all ships and the bottled water you can order onboard is extremely expensive.

Book a Guaranteed Stateroom

This one is for those of you who are flexible! If you don't have a strong preference for which room you stay in, booking a guaranteed stateroom can save you hundreds. Basically, you book the room type you want. But you don't get to pick which room, or deck or which side of the boat you're on.  Your room type is guaranteed, just not the actual specific room.  Then your room is assigned to you later on by Disney Cruise Line. You can't change it unfortunately, so whatever you are assigned is what you get. Not all itineraries have this option. But it's a great way to save when they are offered. You can read all about Guaranteed Staterooms on a Disney Cruise and the ways it can help you save money. 

Order the Disney Cruise Drink of the Day

Want to indulge in some adult beverages while on your vacation? That can get expensive. We recommend trying out the drink of the day ! These are just $5.50 each and the drink changes each day. The best part is that they also offer a non-alcoholic version for underage travelers or those avoiding alcohol. So everyone can enjoy a fancy drink at a discount. 

Take a One Way Trip on a Disney Cruise

This is a really unique way to save money on a Disney Cruise, and one that often gets overlooked. There are several times during the year when the Disney Cruise ships are repositioned to prepare for their next sailing.  These generally are a one way sailing; which may sound a little odd but let me explain. A good example of this are the cruises that sail to San Juan, Puerto Rico.  The cost of this cruise tends be several thousand dollars cheaper (for a family of four) when compared to other Disney Cruises of equal length. The catch is, it won't take you back to where you started. 

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Take the Transatlantic cruises for example. If you're traveling to Europe, and need a way to get home (or vice versa) the cost of a Transatlantic Cruise, for a family of four, is sometimes significantly less than what it would cost to fly home! Sure, you need to actually have the 12 or 13 days to spend at sea, but if you have the time, it's well worth the extra comfort, especially when you consider everything that is included in your Disney Cruise .

We Were Among the First to Visit Disney Cruise Line’s NEW Island Destination

Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is the newest Disney Cruise Line island and joins the other exclusive Disney island Castaway Cay . Only guests booked on a Disney Cruise Line itinerary featuring a stop at this island get to experience these offerings and the top notch Disney customer service.

This newest Disney island features new entertainment inspired by local Bahamian celebrations, multiple family and adult only beaches, recreational activities, all you care to enjoy buffets, plus extended offerings to interact with characters.

We were hosted by Disney to see this amazing new island for the first time and share all the amazing beauty of Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. While we were hosted by Disney, all my opinions are strictly my own! As an avid theme park fan that very recently enjoyed Castaway Cay, I have some helpful commentary on what makes this new island different. Disney's Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point Review

Let's get the initial bad news out of the way first…. the walk to the island! You may see one common compliant amongst those experiencing Lookout Cay for the first time and that is the large walk from the cruise ship to the island itself.

In order to protect the conservation efforts of the island, Disney had to build a pier that stretched far into the ocean for the cruise shops to dock. I applaud Disney for this effort to avoid the impact to the environment but this was a pretty brutal walk! The walk takes 10-15 minutes from the ship to the shore.

After you successfully make this trek (here's my plea for Disney to add in some transport options in the future!) you will encounter the first part of Lookout Cay. This initial destination includes a souvenir pop up, a coffee stand, restrooms and the security area. You will also find cabana rentals in this space.

This is where you will board the trams to take you to the main part of the island where the main beaches are along with all the central shopping, eateries and adult beach options. There were 8 trams running which hold about 70 people . The ride to the other side of the island takes 10-12 minutes.

You can easily see the newness of the island as the drive on the tram took us past plenty of newly planted palm trees. Over time, these will grow and really add a lush look to this path which currently feels a bit lackluster.

Once you take the tram ride, you will arrive at the main hub at Lookout Cay. This is where you will see the main shopping area along with bike rentals and a place to order drinks. This area is totally removed from where you docked and is not walkable. Though the temperature for the island was listed on Apple weather as 82 degrees it felt far hotter.

One of the unique things about Lookout Cay is the way they have mapped out the layout to connect all the major spaces with wooden pathways which is convenient to avoid trekking through the sand.

This is also where you can find the Goombay Cultural Center which is the main hub for the most popular entertainment option RUSH! A Junkanoo Celebration. This is also a space where you can create your own Junkanoo headpieces and learn more about the Bahamian history of this celebration.

The Goombay Cultural Center offers guests the opportunity to participate in special programs and interact with local artists to learn about and celebrate the beauty of The Bahamas.

Watching RUSH! A Junkanoo Celebration was one of the highlights of the day! The performers did an amazing job and we enjoyed seeing an authentic representation of this important Bahamian celebration. It's great to see this type of entertainment incorporated into the island as this is one of the things Disney does best.

The beaches are beautiful and pristine with white sands and turquoise waters. My teenager even said he liked these beaches MORE than Castaway Cay largely because there are more waves than the isolated coves of Castaway Cay which creates calm and still water.

I saw a strong effort to incorporate safety with lifeguards patrolling on jet skis along with life guards stationed on the beach. Occasionally, we would also see boats go past to keep on an eye on guests.

There is snorkeling available in a similar style to Castaway Cay where you rent your equipment and snorkel on your own. My son enjoyed this activity with a group of other teens and they commented on how clear the water was and how easy it was to spot fish. As of now, there's no Disney-like scavenger hunt in the water like Castaway Cay offers.

Disney collaborated with artists, historians, and cultural ambassadors in their design of Lookout Cay. The recreational and water areas all incorporate bright colors to honor the music and spirit of the local Bahamian street parade, Junkanoo.

The architecture of the island is a slam dunk with these impressive structures adding vibrancy and color to the spaces.

The family beach also offers a water play area bursting with color including two sliders, water drums, and water fountains. The beautiful turquoise water and white sandy beaches complement the design of the buildings quite well. There is a distinct cohesive aesthetic here which is similar in some aspects to Castaway Cay but also very different.

It's hard to give a full opinion on Lookout Cay without bringing up Castaway Cay so let's dive into that compare and contrast!

Castaway Cay vs. Lookout Cay

It is hard not to compare Lookout Cay with Castaway Cay right off the bat. Since Castaway Cay is Disney's other private island, I found myself constantly playing the compare and contrast game.

During this initial visit, Lookout Cay paled in comparison to Castaway Cay when judging holistically but I think this is largely due to the newness of Lookout Cay. Over time, it will grow into its own. Castaway Cay is already a well-established destination with lots of offerings so this is something to keep in mind if you find yourself doing your own comparisons. Personally, I still prefer Castaway Cay for those who have to pick one or the other for their sailings but I think Lookout Cay is a beautiful secondary option that will only improve over time.

Just like Castaway Cay, Lookout Cay has both family beaches and adult only beaches offering cabanas and poolside beverage options. You will also see similar activities devoted to the youth groups taking place although there didn't appear to be a dedicated teen space for the Vibe club that Castaway Cay boasts. Again, this will come in time.

As I mentioned above, the RUSH! A Junkanoo Celebration really stands out on the island here. It is totally different than anything that Disney attempts on Castaway Cay.

Most of the food options are similar to the all-you-care-to-enjoy food options at Castaway Cay along there was some Bahamian-inspired dishes. There are two food locations on the island split between the family beaches and the adult-only areas. Seating did appear to be more limited but there are also more locations to enjoy lunch, you just have to trek between them to see what works best.

There are also plenty of specialty cocktails and non-alcoholic offerings available too.

There are plenty of similarities between the two islands but also some key differences. Some of these differences are also reflected in the initial growing pains of the island which I think will only continue to improve over time. For instance, there are currently no kayaks, paddleboards, or aqua bike rentals offered like you see at Castaway Cay.

There is the option of snorkeling or bike rentals but that seems to be the main option available for guests to enjoy. During our day on the island the bike rentals were not yet being offered.

The layout of the island was the main difference and not necessarily a good one. Castaway Cay's layout just makes for an easy day while the layout of Lookout Cay felt more difficult. There is less shade and the spaces themselves are in further proximity to each other.

However, remember my previous comment, there are plenty of palms that were recently planted all over the island so I think this will eventually become the lush landscape that we appreciate about Castaway Cay. It's in the early stages and it needs time to really flourish! Despite that, we had a wonderful time on the island and were in awe of the beauty and the work Disney has done to incorporate cultural elements into their designs.

Overall, I think Lookout Cay is a great addition to the Disney Cruise Line destination options and is something that will continue to improve over time. You cannot beat that exclusivity of Disney customer service that follows you from the ship to land. Disney even went above and beyond after we walked the length of that pier handing out glasses of water and cool towels. The beauty and cultural designs of the island set this destination apart and I cannot wait to see how it continues to evolve over time.

Special Offers on Disney Cruise Line Sailings as of March 4, 2024

This week’s special offers from Disney Cruise Line arrive with new sail dates from late-March into October. Currently, there are 21 sail dates, available with special offers available across the fleet for sailings from Barcelona, Civitavecchia, Fort Lauderdale, Galveston, Honolulu, Port Canaveral, Southampton, and Vancouver.

The Disney Dream features the most sailings at 15, the Disney Magic follows with 6, along with the Disney Fantasy and Disney Wonder with 4 sail dates. Currently, there are no offers listed for the Disney Wish, or the Disney Treasure.

Special rates for Florida Residents held at 3 sail dates, and the US Military Personnel rate increased 3 to 11 cruises. The Canadian Resident increased again, but by just 1 to 15 sail dates.

In terms of general special offers, the IGT, OGT, and VGT offers valid on new bookings for up to 25% off prevailing rates for 2024 Disney Dream European sailings starting with May’s 13-night Eastbound Transatlantic remains available with multiple sail dates available across Europe this summer.

Last but not least, the general domestic offer for  select sailings with savings up to 25% off the prevailing rate remains available for select voyages.

Current Disney Cruise Discounts May 28, 2024

This week, there are a large number of Disney Wish cruises available to book for a discount. If you haven’t had a chance to sail on the Wish, this might be a good time to book. Hopefully, we will see new itineraries for late 2025 and early 2026. I don’t think we will see dates for the newest ships, Disney Adventure and Disney Destiny , that are going to set sail next year. They will probably have their own release separate from the older ships. If Disney follows the same pattern they did with the Treasure , I wouldn’t expect to see the dates released for the Destiny until September.

This year D23 is introducing a new venue for some of the programming, allowing bigger shows with more magic to the biggest audience of Disney fans in the world. For the first time ever, the Honda Center will be home to three nights of marquee showcases. Friday night will begin with the star-studded Disney Entertainment Showcase , featuring exclusive looks at the movies, series, and stage shows fans love and a glimpse of what’s next. Saturday night will showcase Disney Experiences , featuring the latest on new and highly anticipated projects in development around the world for Disney parks, experiences, and beyond. They say getting there is half the fun. Usually, I disagree. When I travel, I want to get to where I’m going as quickly as possible to make the most of my time there. However, sailing Celebrity Edge on its maiden Alaska voyage from Seattle, I was all about the journey.

Staring up at the snow-capped mountains through the ship’s floor-to-ceiling windows and watching for wildlife in the icy waters below, I was mesmerized by the famed Last Frontier. And I realized that on an Alaska cruise , the journey is a destination.

Here’s why and what travelers should know about cruising Alaska.

Why is Alaska a popular cruise destination?

Alaska is a bucket-list destination for many people. Some may wait their whole lives for the trip. While Alaska Airlines and other carriers fly throughout America’s largest state , it isn’t as easy to navigate as the Lower 48.

Cruises allow travelers to visit multiple destinations without taking separate flights, renting a car or moving from hotel to hotel. My Edge itinerary included stops in Ketchikan, which is surrounded by the lush Tongass National Forest ; the state capital of Juneau, which is only accessible by air or sea; and Skagway, home of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park . The ship also carefully navigated the stunning Endicott Arm fjord toward Dawes Glacier, a highlight of the trip.

The easy trip can also be more accessible for people with mobility issues and other disabilities. Like other cruise lines, Celebrity has a team dedicated to accessible cruising . Numerous guests on board my sailing used walkers, canes or wheelchairs. Plus, it’s just nice to be able to take in the dramatic coastlines from the comfort of a cozy cabin or lounge when it’s chilly outside.

Are cruises to Alaska worth it?

They can be. At last check, the lowest price on a seven-night Celebrity Edge Alaska Dawes Glacier sailing, roundtrip from Seattle, for the remainder of this summer is listed at $778 per person on the cruise line’s website, based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom. That does not include travel to or from Seattle nor any taxes or fees, which can balloon the bottom line on any cruise. Nor does it include promotional discounts, which are pretty much always available. After taxes and fees, that works to about $2,212 for two people or $1,106 per person. 

The cheapest seven-night Southbound Glacier sailing on the Edge’s sister ship, Celebrity Summit , is much less at $249 per person, based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom. It’s worth noting the Southbound voyage goes from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia, not a round trip. Also the Summit is not an Edge-class ship , The Celebrity Edge is the first Edge class ship to sail Alaska; it was also the first ship in Celebrity’s most recent series, which also includes the new Celebrity Ascent . Edge-class ships were designed to bring guests closer than ever to their destinations, with their signature Magic Carpet cantilevered platform that extends beyond the ship’s edge and other features that bring the outside in. After taxes and fees, the Summit sailing adds up to about $1,231 for two people or about $615 a person.

Both are cheaper than flying between cities and staying at hotels for a week in Alaska, but they're also cheaper than other popular vacations. For example, seven nights at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort , a value resort at Walt Disney World , costs $955 for the room alone, including taxes and a summer promo deal. Adding seven days of park tickets, without park hopping, and the total becomes $2,195 for two people or about $1,098 per person, excluding food.

Meanwhile, cruises include all onboard meals – except optional specialty dining and alcohol. There are also a boatload of included activities, like nature talks, tai chi classes, guided arts and crafts, trivia, games and childcare. There’s live music available through the day and nightly stage shows. I sampled a little bit of everything, but for me, the best part of the ship was the views.

Do you see wildlife on an Alaskan cruise?

Yes. I saw whale spouts three times from the ship, though the whales didn’t breach above water. I also saw a handful of harbor seals and a dozen eagles from the ship and from shore. Bald eagles are so common in Alaska that a tour bus driver jokingly called them bald seagulls. There are 30,000 bald eagles in the state, according to the Alaska Department of Fish & Game. 

I kept an eye out for bears on an excursion to Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, which is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. I didn’t see any walking along the paved, wheelchair-accessible Nugget Falls Trail, but I did spot all sorts of spring buds and the most beautiful moss.

The ship’s onboard naturalist gave us a heads-up on what to look for and taught us about various species in presentations in the ship’s theater. She also broadcasted live on the ship’s TV channel and inside speakers while traveling through the Endicott Arm. However, her voice wasn’t carried on outside speakers to avoid potentially disturbing wildlife.

What is the best month to go on a cruise to Alaska?

The Alaska cruise season runs from late April to early October, though dates vary by cruise line. Guests who sail early or late in the season may find lower rates than during the height of the summer, but they may miss out on warmer weather.

It was in the 40s to 50s most days of my May sailing, and it rained on our Juneau day. The onboard naturalist warned that there is no bad weather in Alaska, only poor clothing choices.

How much should I budget for an Alaskan cruise?

You should pad your budget with several hundred extra dollars for excursions and dining off-ship. Both can be pricey but enriching. My Mendenhall Glacier excursion was just under $130, including transportation and an off-site Gold Creek Salmon Bake , with all-you-can-eat fresh salmon cooked over a wood-burning fire.  I’ve never had better fried fish than the local halibut at The Alaska Fish House in Ketchikan, and I will be dreaming of the sweet, plump red king crab at Tracy’s King Crab Shack in Juneau for years to come.  If you want freshly caught Alaska seafood, you’ll want to get it at port.

You may be able to spot whales from the cruise ship, but if you really want to go whale watching, salmon fishing, dog sledding, or get up close to glaciers, that’s generally going to require an excursion. Excursions offered through cruise lines tend to cost more than those booked independently, but booking through the cruise line can streamline payment and ensure that the ship won’t leave without you if the excursion runs late.

One port you can enjoy on the cheap is Skagway. You can explore several exhibits and historic buildings on your own, as part of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. However many visitors splurge on a scenic train ride on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway up to the Canadian border and back.

Is it worth getting a balcony on a cruise?

Yes and no. The views throughout Alaska are breathtaking, and being able to enjoy them from your cabin any time of day feels luxurious. I loved waking up to mountains, thick with trees, outside my window and scanning the waters for marinelife before bed.

Just over 80% of Celebrity Edge’s staterooms have a balcony. I had an Infinite Veranda , which is unique to Edge-class ships. Rather than a traditional balcony with a sliding glass door, Infinite Verandas incorporate what would be exterior balcony space into the interior of the cabin and have a window that slides halfway down the exterior wall with the push of a button. I loved how much bigger it made the cabin feel and appreciated the extra climate-controlled living space. It was still chilly during my early season sailing, so I rarely put the window down and think I would have enjoyed a non-balcony, oceanview room just as much.

Of course, if you book an inside cabin, you can still enjoy the scenery from public areas of any ship. The Celebrity Edge brings the outside in with tons of windows, including in the buffet restaurant, Oceanview Cafe, where I spotted my first whale spout. In the back of the ship, there’s a relaxing mixed-use space called Eden with three stories of windows that I found myself drawn to daily. The solarium, with its tall windows and rows of lounge chairs, also offered expansive views. 

Do I need a passport for an Alaskan cruise?

Maybe. For a closed-loop cruise that starts and ends in the same U.S. port, like the one I was on, all you need is proof of citizenship. 

“According to U.S. Customs & Border Protection, this includes an Enhanced Driver’s License, which is a state-issued driver’s license that provides proof of identity and U.S. citizenship; a government-issued birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where the person was born) or passport; and if 16 or older, a government-issued driver’s license or picture ID denoting photo, name, and date of birth,” according to Celebrity.

Of course, not all Alaska cruises are closed-loop cruises. Some start or end in Vancouver, Canada. There are also cruises on several smaller U.S.-flagged cruise lines like Alaska Dream Cruises and Uncruise Adventures , which may not require passports depending on the itinerary.

Can you see the Northern Lights on an Alaska cruise?

It’s possible, but because daylight hours are so long during the summer in Alaska, the best chance to see them would be on a cruise late in the season.

I woke up in the middle of the night a few times to look for Northern Light. I didn’t see any, but I heard passengers on a previous sailing spotted them. Then again, so did people all across the country during the solar storm earlier this month.
