Thank you Shawna for this TA information. I just now found it for the first time!

You are welcome, Pam!

This is great information Shawna, thanks?!

You’re very welcome, Melinda!

Outstanding!! wish I had seen this sooner. I just rented a car for 3 weeks from Alamo in Ft Lauderdale. I showed the counter attendant my CLIA card and asked for a discount, which I did not get.

Why wouldn’t they accept it? Was it because it wasn’t an IATAN card? I have a CLIA card as well. Marriot Hotel Excellence allows a CLIA card for their FAMtastic rates

This is great information and it is very helpful. Thank you for all your hard work. I would appreciate if you could send me an email have a few questions hoping you can help me with. Thanks in advance.

Do you know if Radisson or other hotels accept CLIA card, if we don’t yet have an IATAN card?

Hi Samantha! Per their current online registration form, they accept IATA/ARC/TIDS/CLIA/TRUE.

Thank you for this update!

Shawna, I dont sell enough to qualify for an IATA card myself. Can I use the agency’s number instead or does it have to be person specific to register for these discounts? Thanks so much

Hi Joan! Thank you for your question! These discounts typically require the agent to show their personal IATA card at the location.

i just called Sea World in San Antonio and they did not know anything about the 50% off. Do you konw if it is park or city specific? I have an IATA card.

Thanks. Tim

Our team members that have used this discount in the past simply showed their IATA card at the gate. We’ll look into this to see if the deal is no longer being offered!

**Centrav cannot guarantee availability or access to discounts mentioned in this post.

Thank you! I love the Centrav posts!

Thank you, Nanci!

Thank you for the wonderful post.

Do you happen to know if I can apply for an IATAN card even if I do not work for a travel company?

Thank you, Saurabh

Hi Saurabh,

Thank you for your comment! In order to be eligible for an IATA/IATAN card, an agent must work for an IATA-accredited travel agency.

Check out this post for more info: https://resources.centrav.com/get-iata-card/

Thanks very much

Thank you so much for this!

You are welcome!

Hi Shawna, I am an admin for a nationally touring music band. I am interested in learning how to get travel agent discounts on mostly flights and hotel for the band. Do I need to become a travel agent for that? If you could lead me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Hi Cyndee! We can send you more detailed information shortly!

Thank you for this information.

You’re welcome, Marilyn!

Hello, thank you for this guide. Do you know if travel agents are able to get discounts with baggage for flights ?

I am not aware of travel agent discounts for luggage, however, some private airfares offer extra luggage! This is totally dependent on the airline, routing, etc.

200+ Travel Agent Rates in 2024 [+PDF Download]

One of the biggest perks of becoming a travel agent is the wealth of travel experiences you have access to. As a travel agent, if you take vendor training, or reach a supplier's sales threshold you unlock travel agent rates for personal travel, special perks, amenities, and access to FAM (familiarization trips) .

The career outlook for a travel is great , plus it's an amazing way to see the world! (And if you still think travel agents don't exist, definitely read the previous link as you may be surprised that travel agencies book a larger share of travel than online travel agencies in the US!)

But the big question is, what are these discounted travel agent rates, and how do travel agents access them? We've got it all together for you in one handy dandy little download.

HAR's Travel Agent Rate PDF download includes details on 200+ supplier discounts! The download includes information on travel agent rates, special discounts, and special reward programs — all exclusive to travel agents (and maybe your friend or family :) ).

Not only that, but the download lists eligibility details and links to the travel advisor portal so you can register your travel agency. You can view the full PDF below!

But of course, this article is so much more than a travel agent rates download!

We'll cover:

  • what different kinds of travel agent discounts are out there,
  • how to qualify a supplier's travel agent loyalty or reward program,
  • and elaborate on some of the top travel agent hotel discounts

⭐️ HAR ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS: ⭐️

  • How to Become a Travel Agent (if You’re Not One Already)

First question on the docket: Do travel agents get discounts? They sure do, my friend!

Although, as we'll discuss further, there is a lot more nuance to things than just a yes or no when it comes to if travel agents get discounts. Keep on reading because we'll go over which travel agents get discounts (every supplier is going to have different parameters) and what types of travel advisors can get discounts for.

Different Types of Travel Agent Rates & Incentives

Every supplier is going to have a different kind of travel agent rate or loyalty program. Some are complicated. Some are simple.

Here’s what you can generally expect in terms of travel agent discount programs:

  • Point Systems: Depending on the vendor, point systems offer you just that — a certain number of points per night booked. Points allotted will likely vary by tier of property. If you book a luxury property, you’ll get more points. Travel agent point systems, while somewhat complicated, are great for flexibility. It levels the playing field and operates like an amped-up client-facing rewards program.
  • Cash Incentives: Some vendors will offer travel agents hard cash for bookings (e.g. you get $25 for every room night booked). This isn't a rate or discount, but it's definitely an incentive!
  • Straight-up Flat Discounts: Some travel agent discounts are simple—you get a certain percentage off your stay. Easy peasy.
  • Special Reduced Rates: Because you’re a travel agent (or because you love to travel), you know that suppliers have peak seasons, different classes of properties, rooms, etc. Many suppliers will issue reduced rates exclusive to travel agents, outlining what the cost is for a different room category, itinerary, sailing date, etc.
  • Traveling for Free: Free travel is not the norm. There are circumstances travel agents may get a free cruise, a free theme park ticket, or free nights at a resort (etc.). This typically happens after a travel agent completes a vendor’s training program or if you're a top sales person of that supplier/brand.
  • Group Travel Rates : I’m not going to go deep into group rates, since this is something that (believe it or not) is typically offered in addition to travel agent rates. If you book a certain number of people on a trip or cruise (or a certain number of nights stay) you get a free credit you can use for yourself or for a client. (e.g. for Globus brands, you can receive travel agent discounts ranging from 25% - 100% depending on itinerary, group size, and when you book.)
  • Familiarization (FAM) Trips: In my mind, FAM trips are more of a travel agent perk than a travel agent discount or rate. FAMs are free or deeply discounted trips offered to travel agents (or travel professionals) to educate them about a product or destination. Here's a great explainer of FAM trips .

Suppliers want to keep travel agents happy! Many will have some combination of these perks above.

8 Things You Need to Know About Travel Agent Rates & Discounts

Here are a few things to know about what to expect when you're shopping for travel agent discounts:

1. You Need an Accreditation Number to Get travel agent Discounts

You need to be a travel agent to access travel agent rates and discounts. What makes someone a travel agent? An accreditation number . . . whether you get your own or align with a host agency .

2. Travel Agent Discounts are for Active Travel Agents

Beyond having an accreditation number, you need to sell travel. I know this may seem incredibly obvious, but oftentimes vendors will only offer travel agent rates or perks after you reach a certain sales threshold.

3. A Niche Will Help You Get More Travel Agent Bonuses & Rates (Here’s Why)

Part of developing a travel agent niche is getting a pulse on who your preferred suppliers are. When you begin to get a handle on what suppliers you love, you can focus your time and energies on learning those suppliers inside out.

This will help you establish the deep product knowledge and supplier relationships required to be a successful seller. In turn, you'll have access to more travel agent discounts and rewards as your sales increase.

4. You Often Need to Complete a Vendor Certification to Get a Discount

If you’re completely new, you’re not going to have a long scroll of past sales to help you access travel agent rates. But don’t worry. Many suppliers offer special rates, FAMs, or even free trips once you complete their training programs.

You'll want to make sure you stay current on supplier certifications so you can keep up with their updates and offer your clients the most recent info. Suppliers want you to love their brands and they know you gotta experience it yourself to love it!

5. Rules Most Likely Apply

Travel agent discounts are often saddled with long terms and conditions and/or fine print. This fine print may be peppered with info like blackout dates or that rates are subject to change (without asking for your permission). Unsurprisingly, travel agent rates are non-commissionable.

6. Travel Agent Rates and Programs can Change

Yep. They can and do. So when you read about specific travel agent discounts below, be sure you always check directly with your supplier/ BDM (Business Development Manager) for the most updated travel agent discount policy!

7. Q: If You Book Under a Host agency, Will You Get Your Discount?

Yes. When you set up your logins on host portals, suppliers will know which agent booked what and you’ll get your due glory.

When you set up your logins on host portals, suppliers will know which agent booked what and you’ll get your due glory.

An exception is Disney. For Earmarked Disney agencies (Disney's top selling agency program), it's the accrediting agency that will receive the allotted theme park tickets and travel agent rates to distribute among their agents. So ask your agency how that works if you want to get in it. That said, there are still incentives for solo Disney advisors who complete the College of Disney Knowledge! (Just check out the download !)

8. If you get bonuses, you may need to pay taxes on it

Any point system that can be exchanged for cash may be subject to taxes if you earn more than $600 in bonuses. Don’t ask me. Ask your accountant and make sure you know the tax implications of points you cash in.

Travel Agent Rates & Discounts that Will Make Your Brain Explode 🤯

Let's be honest with ourselves, this is probably why you're here for! To find more information on the travel agent rates, click on the link in the cell.

Also, things change. While we update this annually, check directly with the supplier for the most current travel agent rates and discounts.

Questions to Ask About Travel Agent Rates

You'll likely have questions about a supplier's travel agent rates. One thing to stress is that only asking about a supplier's discounts for travel agents is... well, it's tacky. Bottom line: Your first communication with a vendor should not be about their travel agent rates.

Your first communication with a vendor should not be about their travel agent rates.

These rates are for travel pros who are serious about their trade and want to increase sales. Make the effort to educate yourself on the product, let your BDM (business development manager) know your plan to help increase your sales for their product, and THEN you can ask about the travel agent rates.

If you’re really wanting to compare different rates and programs, here are a few questions you to think about, some of which are in the download above!

  • What travel accreditations are accepted? (TRUE may not be accepted everywhere)
  • Are there companion benefits?
  • Do you need to complete supplier education to secure the rate? If so, how often do I need to renew or recertify (if at all)?
  • Are there other eligibility requirements?
  • What's the sales threshold to attain travel agent rates or benefits?
  • Does belonging to a host agency impact my benefits?
  • What are typical blackout dates or seasons?
  • How long do I have to redeem my travel agent benefits (if it’s a point system)? When do they expire?
  • How do I request or access these benefits?

I'm going to do a deeper dive into a few travel agent hotel rates. There are a zillion different properties so I'm including just a few here. They offer a good idea of what kind of rates travel agents can expect from hotels.

You may be able to find better travel agents rates if you book the hotel through a tour operator.

Keep in mind that these hotel programs listed below are hotel-direct. Advisors seeking discounted hotel rates will need to book them directly through the hotel (rather than booking via a tour operator).

Another thing to note is that hotels with education programs typically will offer the best travel rates (above a standard travel agent rate).

(International Hotel Group) IHG Travel Agent Rates

IHG is linked and included in our download above . Yay! IHG offers a baseline discount of 35% off their Best Flex Rate to travel agents. Not to0 shabs!

Here are a few more details.

IHG offers a baseline discount of 35% off their Best Flex Rate.

But IHG often has offers beyond their base discounts, induing higher discounts on room rates, discounts on spa services, and other fun stuff. At the time of writing this, IHG had special offers that ranged from 35% - 50%.

If you're a travel agent, accessing IHG's travel agent rates is easy. Here's how:

Marriott Travel Agent Rates

Marriott acquired Starwood in 2015. So if you're looking for Starwood's travel agent rates, look no further than Marriott. Marriott has two different types of travel agent rates. Here's the rundown:

1. Marriott Travel Agent Rates

Marriott's travel agent rate is their blanket travel agent rate program which isavailable to any accredited travel agent with a valid IATA, ARC, CLIA or TIDS accreditation number . It's worth noting that Marriott does not accept TRUE number s.

The travel agent rate varies depending on availability, hotel category, and season. Marriott's travel agent discounts run up to 50% , but you can typically expect less. (At the time of writing this, the discounts ranged from 10-15% when I searched my hometown.)

Marriott's travel agent rate offers can be used to book up to two rooms for unlimited nights (depending on availability)

Marriott's travel agent rate offers can be used to book up to two rooms for unlimited nights (depending on availability).

Here's how to take advantage of Marriott's travel agent rate offers:

Marriott Travel Agent Programs

2. Search Marriott's travel agent rates here (Main menu>Promotions>Travel Agent Rate Search).

3. Log in/register to make a booking!

2. Marriott's Fam-Tastic Travel Agent Rates

Marriott's Fam-Tastic program is designed less for personal leisure and more to provide an opportunity for agents to familiarize themselves with properties (hence the name).

For Marriott's Fam-tastic program, advisors can reserve one room for four nights maximum.

This program is only available to Marriott's preferred travel agencies . You can visit host profiles and drop them a note in the Q&A section to ask if they are a preferred Marriott agency.

Question and answer section on host agency profile

Marriott's FAM-tastic rate offers deeper discounts than their standard travel agent rate but with more requirements. In addition to fulfilling the requirements for a standard travel agent rate, other requirements include:

  • Marriott Bonvoy membership

  • Fulfill HE! continuing credits every year
  • Have an updated Marriott International (MI) Partner Privileges profile

Here's how to access Marriott's FAM-tastic rates:

Travel Agent Airline Discounts

I'm going to take a deep dive into travel agent airline discounts. Why? Travel agent airline discounts are more complicated to access for a smaller reward .

Here's why . . .

These travel agent airline rates are typically referred to as "AD50" or "AD75," signifying 50%-75% airline discounts for travel agents. At first, this seems like an amazing discount.

But as you’ve probably guessed, travel agents do not get 50-75% off their airline tickets. Otherwise, so many people would want to become a travel agent that our website would break :)

Without going too deep into the weeds, here's why these airline discounts can seem misleading at first.

Airlines break seats down into many different fare classes . All these fare classes have different pricing and rules attached to them. Among other things, the fare classes help the airline understand if you paid full fare or a discounted rate, if you’re in first class/business class/economy class, if you’re doing one way or round trip, and lots of other details.

Even at 50-75% off, Y fare class seats usually cost more than the other economy tickets available.

When it comes to travel agent airline discounts, the AD50 and AD75 discounts apply only to Y-fare class seats, which are full-fare economy seats. Essentially, they’re the most expensive economy-class tickets possible. Even at 50-75% off, Y fare class seats usually cost more than the other economy tickets available.

Not only are AD50 and AD75 discounts often more expensive than other economy tickets available, but there are also more hoops to jump through to access them. Airlines that offer these flight discounts will often have stringent eligibility requirements and detailed terms and conditions required to even request them.

According to seasoned corporate travel advisor and owner of Pioneer Travel, Mike Edic, "By the time you figure out the 'discounted' price, you can still purchase a real ticket for a lot less." Edic elaborated that these rates are seldom cheaper unless it's a last-minute booking (where all that remains are those pricey, full-fare Y-class seats).

I almost found myself on the dark web looking for travel agent rates. Google only gets you so far . . . that is until it got you to this article.

But here’s a list of fab industry professionals who picked up the slack for Google (brace yourself, it’s a long list!): Bonnie Lee at Travel Quest , Summer Corbitt at Uniglobe , Guy Young and Priscilla Odoom at Insight Vacations, Josh Mahon at Rocky Mountaineer, Maria Triantos at Celestyal Cruises, Jim Tedesco at Apple Leisure Group Vacations, Mike Edic of Go Pioneer Travel, and all the stellar travel advisors who weighed in on Steph Lee’s FB page.

This is a living, changing, breathing document . . . Do you have a favorite travel agent rate or reward program? Holler in the comments!

How One Motel 6 Charges Almost $500/Night & Regularly Sells Out

By the way, Tom Bodett never really worked for Motel 6. He’s a voice actor (and an author, woodworker and radio personality) who was hired to do these commercials for the chain in 1986 and is still going strong at them. Go figure.

Brief history of Motel 6

Anyway, Motel 6 got its start in 1962, in Santa Barbara, California. A budget motel from the start, they charged a whopping $6 per night. That’s how they got the name Motel 6, by the way.  Oh, and that $6? That’s about $62.05 in today’s money. Sounds about right.

The chain was started by William Becker and Paul Greene. Their goal was to compete with other low-cost hotel chains of the time, such as Holiday Inn, which were starting to inch themselves up in quality. Motel 6, meanwhile, advertised itself as a “no-frills” motel brand, with rooms that featured coin-operated black-and-white television receivers (most other motels by that point were offering free color TV), along with functional interior decor to reduce the time it took to clean the rooms.

Four years after the first Motel 6 opened, the chain was up to 25 motels. They were doing very well, with an 85% occupancy rate (the industry average was significantly less than that at the time), so Becker and Greene decided to sell the chain in 1968.

The chain changed hands again in 1985 (to investment company Kohlberg Kravitz Roberts, who upgraded the chain with telephones and color TVs in the rooms), 1990 (to Accor) and 2012 (the Blackstone Group).

Through the years, the chain, now 1,400 motels strong, has had its ups and downs. Although amenities vary from location to location, they’re generally pretty bare bones. Some locations may have a pool/hot tub, laundry facilities, or blackout curtains, but many don’t (the Motel 6 in Anaheim – Convention Center touts private bathrooms! Yay!). Motel 6 is still considered a “cheap” motel (and one that generally doesn’t get good reviews. It was listed as the #15 of 20 hotels in a small study last year ) and prices for rooms generally range from the $60s to the $80s per night.

The one outlier

Despite that, there’s one Motel 6 that typically charges close to $200/night and over $400/night on popular nights. It turns out to be that original location in Santa Barbara—you know, the one that charged $6 when it opened 60-something years ago, LOL!

Want to stay there for the night of Wednesday, May 29th? Need a flexible rate? That’ll be $184.99, please.

a screenshot of a hotel room

Are you more of a summer person? OK, no problem. That same room with a queen-sized bed will be $308.99 for one weeknight in late July.

a screenshot of a computer

Can’t get out of work so you want one night on a weekend during the summer? Your queen-sized room will set you back a cool $428.99, please and thank-you. FOR A MOTEL 6!!!

What it offers

The Santa Barbara Motel 6 was refurbished in 2020. However, its amenities are still pretty basic (from Tripadvisor ):

Property amenities:

Room features.

a room with two beds and a desk

  • “Lovely motel very close to the beach, literally just a 2 minute walk to the stunning beach. Rooms were nice, very clean, modern, apart from no coffee/tea facility. Car parking great, didnt use pool but it was tiny.” – May, 2024
  • “A great place to visit. I chose this motel for 3 nights in our California trip because it was a very short walk from the sea and had a small outdoor swimming pool (enclosed by glass walls. Pretty basic but comfortable and a coffee machine in the foyer. Close to a bar/restaurant on the promenade and a hotel bar just down the road” – Jan, 2024
  • Exceeded my expectations for a Motel 6. Check-in was easy, front desk staff was friendly. Room was great, incredibly clean. Nice set up. Parking was convenient. The pool looked amazing, super clean. Looked like a great place to lounge or go for a swim. Best part was LOCATION! One block from the beach. You can see the ocean from the front of the hotel. – Nov. 2023

Why is it so expensive?

Being the chain’s “first” location probably has a bit to do with the price – nostalgia. But the main reason? Location, location, location.

You saw all 3 reviews we quoted; all mentioned the location – it’s a block away form the beach. Santa Barbara is also a tourist town that has good weather almost all the time.

What does the owner say?

This particular Motel 6 is privately owned by Sanjay Patel ( undoubtedly part of the “Patel Cartel” of Indian-Americans who own hotels in the U.S. LOL!). He’s chief executive of Sanj Hotels, a family business based in Los Angeles. They already owned 5 other Motel 6s but purchased the Santa Barbara one for $14M from the Blackstone Group in June, 2022. He told the Wall Street Journal that the high room rates in Santa Barbara are mainly due to market factors.

Hostel vs Hotel: Understand The Differences To Make A Wise Choice

When choosing the perfect accommodation for your travels, the tried-and-true hotel option has long been the go-to choice. However, as you delve deeper into your research, you will come across numerous websites and travel guides extolling the virtues of hostels as a viable alternative. With both options providing lodging, it begs the question: What's the difference between Hostel and Hotel?

In this guide, we will embark on a captivating exploration of the distinctive characteristics that set hostels and hotels apart. By unravelling the unique offerings of each, we aim to equip you with the knowledge needed to make an informed decision for your next adventure. So, buckle up and get ready to discover the unconventional world of hostels and hotels!

1. Hostels: An Affordable and Social Experience

A hostel is a type of lodging where guests stay in dormitory-style rooms and share common facilities like kitchens, bathrooms, and common areas. The shared dorm rooms typically have bunk beds, which keeps costs low and creates a friendly and lively atmosphere.

They are typically situated in accessible central areas, close to public transportation, sights, and lively entertainment districts. This convenience location aspect makes it easy for travellers to explore the local area.

Besides being affordable, hostels offer a range of amenities and services to enhance guests' experiences. You may have access to amenities like free Wi-Fi, group outings, laundry services, luggage storage, and helpful front desk staff available 24/7.

There are many types of hostels available, such as party hostels located near nightlife hotspots, boutique hostels that offer a more upscale experience similar to hotels, and eco-friendly hostels for environmentally conscious travellers.

Some popular hostel chains include YHA (Youth Hostel Association) , Generator Hostels , and Rest Up Kathmandu Hostel . Each hostel has its own unique vibe, facilities, and atmosphere, catering to different preferences and travel styles.

2. Hotels: Comfort and Privacy

A hotel is a type of commercial establishment that provides accommodation and various services to visitors. There is a wide range of hotel sizes available, from intimate inns to sprawling complexes.

They typically offer private rooms with beds, bathrooms, and additional features like TVs, minibars, and workstations. Suites and other types of enhanced rooms are sometimes available at upscale hotels.

To further improve their customers' stays, hotels offer more than only cosy rooms. Premium services such as luxury hotel spas or fitness centres may require an extra fee.

Other services like housekeeping, room service, concierge assistance, laundry facilities, and on-site dining options like restaurants and bars are often included in package deals or promotions, especially during peak tourism periods.

3. Hostel vs Hotel: A Comparison

Now we will continue with the most important part of the article: a detailed comparison of Hostel vs Hotel . So, let’s take a closer look!

3.1. Budget

When it comes to budget considerations, hostels are generally more affordable than hotels . For example, a hostel in a popular tourist destination like Amsterdam may offer dormitory beds for as low as $15 per night. Whereas a hotel in the same area could cost upwards of $100 per night for a private room.

Many hostels are willing to negotiate prices with guests, especially during the low season or if you stay for an extended period. Don't be afraid to ask the host if they can offer a discounted rate, as this can save you a lot of money.

Some hostels offer work-for-stay options , where you can exchange a few hours of work per day, such as cleaning or reception duties, for a free or discounted stay. This can be a great way to save money, meet other travellers, and get a local experience.

This makes hostels particularly appealing to budget-conscious travellers or backpackers who are looking to save money on accommodation expenses.

However, it is always better to compare prices before making a decision. You can easily do this by checking out popular booking sites like Airbnb or Booking.com . Plus, during peak season, prices can fluctuate quite a bit. In fact, you might even find that a hotel is cheaper than a hostel in a busy area !

3.2. Amenities

Hotels generally offer a wider range of amenities compared to hostels, with private bathrooms and in-room amenities such as televisions and mini-fridges.

There are also on-site restaurants, cafes, or feature amenities like fitness centres, swimming pools, spa facilities, and business centres, which can enhance the guest's experience.

Hotels typically provide daily housekeeping services, ensuring that rooms are cleaned and maintained regularly. Additionally, hotels often have 24-hour front desk services, concierge assistance, and room service, further enhancing the guest experience.

In contrast, hostels often have only the necessary amenities . This can include a bed, shared bathroom facilities, and a communal area for socialising and relaxing.

However, to cater to the changing demands of travellers, many hostels are now incorporating additional amenities. One such amenity is the communal kitchen, where guests can prepare their own meals.

This can be a great way to save money on dining out and meet other travellers worldwide. Some hostels also offer free breakfasts, which greatly adds value to guests.

3.3. Privacy

motel 6 travel agent rate

Hotels offer private rooms with their own bathrooms, which provides guests with a high level of privacy . They also have amenities such as TVs, mini-fridges, and work desks, providing a secluded space to unwind.

Hostels, on the other hand, usually offer shared accommodations where guests share a room with other travellers, ranging from small dormitory-style rooms with bunk beds to larger ones that can accommodate several people.

Although shared accommodations can be an affordable way to meet new people, they may not be ideal for those who value privacy. To address this, many hostels now have innovative designs that provide a level of privacy even within shared spaces.

For instance, pod-style beds are small, enclosed spaces that give guests a sense of personal space and privacy. Other hostels have installed curtains or dividers to separate sleeping areas, allowing guests to create their own private space within a shared room.

In addition to privacy concerns, the level of noise and security can also affect the guest's privacy in both hotels and hostels. Hotels tend to be quieter than hostels, as guests have their own private spaces to retreat to.

Hostels can be noisy, particularly if you're sharing a room with other travellers who may be coming and going at different times of day or night.

However, some hostels have implemented noise-reducing measures such as soundproofing or quiet hours to help ensure a more peaceful environment.

3.4. Safety

motel 6 travel agent rate

When deciding between a hotel and a hostel for your travels, safety is an important factor to consider. Hotels typically offer more security measures , including surveillance cameras, key card access systems, and even security personnel.

Hotel staff are often trained in safety and emergency procedures, and hotels may offer additional security features such as in-room safes and 24-hour front desk service. This makes them a better choice for families and those travelling with children.

Hostels typically have shared spaces and may not have the same level of security. They often provide lockers or storage spaces in shared dormitories. These rooms typically have 6 to 10 beds, and it's recommended that you bring your own lock to keep your belongings secure.

However, many hostels now offer lockers or other secure storage options for guests to store their valuables, and some even have 24-hour security or front desk staff to ensure guests' safety.

Although most hostels are equipped with CCTV cameras and on-site staff, you should be cautious when using common areas, especially late at night, and don't leave your belongings unattended.

3.5. Atmosphere

The atmosphere in hostels and hotels can differ significantly, appealing to different types of travellers. Many people love hostels’ vibrant and social atmosphere , encouraging guest interaction and connection.

With communal spaces like lounges, game rooms, or outdoor areas, hostels create opportunities to meet people from different backgrounds, share experiences, and even form friendships. This social aspect particularly appeals to solo travellers or those seeking a more communal travel experience.

Furthermore, many hostels organise social activities such as pub crawls, walking tours, or movie nights, which can be a great way to explore the local area and meet new people. Hostels also often have a relaxed and informal atmosphere where guests can feel comfortable and at home.

In contrast, hotels focus more on providing a serene and relaxing atmosphere . They are designed to cater to the needs of business travellers, families, or couples looking for a peaceful and private stay.

This can be achieved through features like soundproofing, blackout curtains, and comfortable bedding. Some hotels also offer amenities like spas and wellness centres that promote relaxation and stress relief.

3.6. Events

Hotels tend to be more formal than hostels. They offer a variety of meeting rooms and event spaces that can accommodate small to large groups, providing modern technology and catering services to make professional events a breeze.

For weddings, hotels provide elegant ballrooms, outdoor spaces, and customised services that cater to different wedding styles and sizes. And for charity events, hotels offer a sophisticated atmosphere and catering services that help organisations raise funds and awareness for their cause.

In contrast, the hostel is a great choice for travellers who are looking for a fun and social atmosphere, with events such as pub crawls, movie nights, and game tournaments.

4. Hostel vs Hotel: Which One Should You Choose?

Choose according to your needs. Photo by Rawpixel.com - stock.adobe.com

From our Hostel vs Hotel detailed analysis , we have guided through the 6 most important factors to differentiate them from each other. Now, let’s find out which one is better for you!

You might prefer a hostel if:

  • You are a backpacker, solo traveller, student, etc.
  • The thrill of meeting new faces and forging lasting connections excites you.
  • You thrive in a lively and spirited atmosphere.
  • Saving some precious cash on accommodation is a top priority.

You might prefer a hotel if:

  • You are travelling as a business traveller, a couple or going with families and children
  • Prefer a more private and comfortable accommodation experience, such as room service or car parking.
  • Opt for the opportunity to collect hotel points with each stay.
  • You need a relaxing and inactive vacation.

CabinZero tips:

Experience always tells the truth about the world. Therefore, you can try both hostels and hotels by booking a hostel for one night and a hotel for the next several nights.

This way, you can meet new people at the hostel and exchange contact information with them while also enjoying the comfort and amenities of a hotel room.

1. What Is The Difference Between A Hostel and A Hotel?

Hostels are budget accommodations, usually offering dormitory-style rooms with shared facilities such as bathrooms and kitchens. Hotels, on the other hand, provide private rooms with en-suite bathrooms and often offer additional amenities like room service, a restaurant, or a swimming pool. Hotels are generally more expensive than hostels.

2. Are Hostels Only Suitable For Young Travellers?

No, hostels are not exclusively limited to young travellers. While they are popular among backpackers and young adventurers, people of all ages choose hostels for their affordability and social environment. Some hostels even have private rooms available for individuals or families seeking more privacy.

3. How Do I Book A Hostel Or Hotel?

Hostels and hotels can be booked through various methods. Common options include booking directly through the establishment's website, using online travel agencies (OTAs) such as Booking.com or Expedia, or contacting a travel agent. Comparison websites can help you find the best deals and read reviews from other guests.

4. Can You Find Private Rooms In Hostels?

Yes, many hostels offer private rooms alongside dormitory-style accommodations. Private rooms are more expensive than shared dorms but are still more affordable than hotels. They provide a middle ground for travellers who desire a balance between privacy and socialising.

Now you are familiar with the differences between hostels and hotels. Hostels offer an affordable and social environment, appealing to budget-conscious travellers and those who enjoy meeting fellow adventurers. On the other hand, hotels provide comfort, privacy, and a range of amenities, catering to a broader spectrum of travellers.

Consider your priorities, such as budget, desired level of privacy, and the type of amenities you value, when making your decision. Whether searching for the best hotels to stay in Tokyo , Berlin , or a comfortable stay at Seoul hostels for this September , choose the option that best aligns with your needs and preferences, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable stay throughout your journey. Happy travelling!
