🐷 Pudding – No, it’s not dessert! Served with a cooked Irish breakfast, it’s a pork, herb and oat sausage with black and white versions (black is made with blood). Tastes rather like haggis.

🐮 Spiced Beef - Cured and lightly spiced, this dish is typically served at Christmas. Tastes like pastrami as a cold cut.

✝️ Scones – Scones in Ireland are different to what Americans might expect. Here, scones are fist-sized, baked breads, typically crumbly in texture and made with white or wholemeal flour. Sometimes they have raisins inside or are served with butter, cream and fruit jam.

Did you know that you can discern the religion of an Irish person by the way they pronounce this one little word? It's sk-own for Catholic, skon for Protestant. In Ireland, even the snacks are religious!

  • Ireland’s farming scene and deep roots in tradition make for hearty pub meals, (stew or shepherd’s pie, anyone?). But there’s also an emerging movement of farm-to-table and sea-to-table dishes, and an impressive network of high-quality food and beverage producers.
  • Guinness stout is an international sensation, but locals might favor Murphy's, depending on where you are. A large selection of handcrafted cider is also widely available, thanks to thriving apple orchards on the east coast and inland to Kilkenny and Tipperary. While wine may not come to mind when you imagine Irish beverages, wine production is up-and-coming in County Cork. And of course, you can’t go wrong with a draught of Irish whisky, particularly the ever-popular Jameson.
  • Dublin has seen something of a culinary revolution, and the city now boasts an impressive array of new restaurants offering exciting cuisine with continental Europe, Asian, and even American influences.
  • West Cork is a foodie hub in Ireland, where everything from local produce, meat, seafood, and dairy products are featured in every farm-to-table meal.
  • Some of the must-try local foods on this tour include homemade cheese from County Kilkenny, wild mushrooms on the Beara Peninsula, smoked fish, mussels, and chocolate. On the map: Dating back to the 1430s, Ashtown Castle is a tower house in the Phoenix Park, in Dublin. The tower was discovered in the late 90s within the walls of Ashtown Lodge. At the time of discovery, the lodge was being demolished due to dry rot and the castle was found underneath. After some restoration, the tower was dedicated to form part of the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre. While the Visitor Centre displays information and historical interpretations of the Phoenix Park from 3500BC to the present day, visitors are also encouraged to join a guided tour of the castle tower!

Overnight Location

culinary tour ireland

On the Map: Wicklow Town is located on Ireland's eastern coast, approximately one hour south of Dublin City. The town is accessed via the N11 road that connects the cities of Dublin (to the north) and Wexford (to the south).

Known as “the Garden of Ireland”, Wicklow has wonderful scenery, with mountains, wooded valleys and lakes. It is fringed on the east by golden sandy beaches. Major routes to the east and west go through two of the highest passes in the country – Sally Gap and Wicklow Gap. Among its spectacular valleys are Glenmalure, Glencree, Glenmacnass, the Glen of Immal, and the most famous of all – Glendalough, the home of one of the country’s most famous early Christian sites. The county is very popular with outdoor enthusiasts for the range of activities it offers – walking, cycling, shore, coarse and game angling, golf, riding, watersports. There are also a number of historic gardens and houses to visit, Powerscourt House being the most famous and impressive.  Because of its wonderful scenery, the county has been used as a location for many films over the years, including Excalibur, Braveheart, Far and Away and Michael Collins. The very successful Irish television series Ballykissangel was made in the pretty village of Avoca.

On the Map : Glendalough is located in County Wicklow, in the east of Ireland - just 1 hour south of Dublin City. Scenically nestled in the Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough is served by a network of small country roads. From the northeast (Dublin), travel on the R755/R756, from everywhere else, arrive from the west on the R756.

Glendalough ("The Glen of the Two Lakes"), is the site upon which St. Kevin founded a unique monastic settlement in the 6th century. Most of what remains of the settlement is in ruins but the Round Tower at Glendalough, built as a refuge from marauding Vikings, is over a 1000 years old and is remarkably well preserved. The site itself is set next to two clear water lakes beneath the sheer cliffs of a deep glacial valley. It is one of the most serene and beautiful places in all Ireland and it is easy to see why the monks picked it for a place of prayer and contemplation. There are a myriad of walking trails throughout the area making it a truly invigorating place to spend the day.

culinary tour ireland

Wicklow Mountains National Park covers part of a mountain range that extends over most of County Wicklow on the east coast of Ireland. The upper slopes and rounded peaks are blanketed with heath and bog. The open vistas are interrupted only by forestry plantations and the winding mountain roads. Fast-flowing streams descend into the deep lakes of the wooded valleys and continue their course into the surrounding lowlands.

The primary purpose of Wicklow Mountains National Park is the conservation of local biodiversity and landscape. The Park is also an invaluable recreational space for locals and visitors alike. Over one million visits are estimated to be made each year. The most visited area is the scenic Glendalough Valley where the ancient monastic settlement of St. Kevin is located. Escape from the summer crowds is possible for those coming properly equipped to explore the uplands on foot, where a sense of wilderness and isolation can readily be found.

Prepare yourself for an unforgettable Irish welcome, delving deep into the wonder of world-famous Guinness! The brewery is located in the heart of Dublin at historic St. James Gate. Originally a small brewery, it is now a 7-story visitor experience that brings the history, story, and taste of the Emerald Isle’s iconic brew to life.

Imagine the world’s largest pint glass (Guinness did start the Guinness Book of World Records, after all) rising to the top of the building. Amazing. The dramatic story begins 250-years-ago and incorporates a family legacy handed down through generations. You’ll end your time here at the Gravity Bar, enjoying a complimentary pint of Guinness.  Relax and enjoy spectacular views of Dublin. Plan to spend 1 ½ to 2 hours here.

On the Map : Dublin, Ireland's Capital City is located on the east coast of the country, and is well served by infrastructure linking it to all parts of the Emerald Isle.

Dublin is a lively cosmopolitan city, filled with personality, pizzazz, and culture. You might spend time strolling the streets, soaking up the atmosphere, relaxing in cafes and pubs, or you could check out a world of historical, literary, and musical delights. A return visit to the Book of Kells, Phoenix Park (twice the size of Central Park), Georgian Dublin, Stephen’s Green, Dublin Castle, the National Museum, Kilmainham Gaol, and the Hugh Lane Municipal Art gallery are all possibilities. On the map: Dating back to the Elizabethan period, Rathfarnham Castle (Ireland’s earliest fortified house) was originally built for Archbishop Adam Loftus - an ambitious Yorkshire clergyman who later became Lord Chancellor of Ireland. In the late 19th-century, the castle was remodeled by some of the finest architects of the day including Sir William Chambers. Today, the castle is open to the public for tours and rotating art exhibitions. Be sure to check the dates you will be visiting as the castle often hosts local events!

Titanic Belfast extends over nine galleries, with multiple dimensions to the exhibition, drawing together special effects, dark rides, full-scale reconstructions and innovative interactive features to explore the Titanic story in a fresh and insightful way; from her conception in Belfast in the early 1900s, through her construction and launch, to her infamous maiden voyage and catastrophic demise. The journey goes beyond the aftermath of the sinking, to the discovery of the wreck and continues into the present day with a live undersea exploration centre.

On The Map: Belfast Castle is located just 4 miles north of the city centre on the slopes of Cave Hill. It is well signposted from the nearby Antrim Road.

Belfast Castle Estate is adjacent to one of the highest spots in Belfast, Cave Hill - at 400 feet above sea level, the castle offers stunning views over Belfast Lough and the city. Built in the 19th century, Belfast Castle is a Scottish Baronial style castle featuring unrivaled views of the city of Belfast. While the area played host to two castles before the one that stands today, the current Belfast Castle was finished in 1870. After serving the Shaftesbury family, the castle and its surrounding estate was presented to the city of Belfast in 1934. Between 1945 and 1970s, the castle was a popular venue for weddings, dances and afternoon teas. After a period of refurbishment between 1978 and 1988, the castle reopened and continued to host weddings, business meetings, and events. Head to the castle to explore its grounds and enjoy a meal at the Cellar Restaurant.

Cave Hill Visitor Centre is located on the second floor of Belfast Castle. This intriguing museum is open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 10pm, and Sundays from 9am to 5.30pm, and admission is free!

The Cellar Restaurant within the castle is open every day from 11am-5pm serving snacks, light refreshments, and lunch.

On the map: Castlewellan Castle is a 19th-century Victorian castle located in County Down in Northern Ireland, roughly one hour south of Belfast.

Commissioned and built in 1856 by William Richard Annesly, 4th Earl Annesly, Castlewellan Castle is a beautiful example of Victorian architecture and craftsmanship. Today, the castle is a Christian Conference Centre, its facilities used by many churches and schools. While the castle plays host to numerous retreats, the grounds are stunning and worth a visit. The main features of the castle grounds are The Lake (constantly stocked with brown and rainbow trout), The Arboretum (which dates back to 1870), and The Peace Maze (covering nearly 3 acres with 2.18 miles of pathway).

Killyleagh Castle, County Down

On the map: Killyleagh Castle is a 17th-century castle located in County Down in Northern Ireland, roughly 40 minutes southeast of Belfast.

Believed to be the oldest inhabited castle in the country, with parts dating back to 1180, Killyleagh Castle is a beautiful sight to behold. The castle follows the architectural style of a Loire Valley Chateau and has been owned by the Hamilton family since the early 17th century. While the main part of the castle is home to Gawn Hamilton and his family, two of the towers are available as self-catering accommodation. For those who don’t have time to stay overnight, be sure to stop by and check out the amazing architecture!

On The Map: Ballymena is located in County Antrim, in the northeast corner of the island of Ireland. Belfast is just 30 miles away to the south.

Ballymena, also known as the 'City of the Seven Towers', is an attractive town, with some notable features and history. The town was founded on land given to the Adair family by King Charles I in 1626. The King decreed that in return for the land, the town would hold two annual fairs and a free Saturday market in perpetuity. To this day, the town holds one of the largest two-day agricultural shows in Ireland each year, and the weekly Saturday market continues to run! Ballymena is located just 6 miles from distinctive Slemish Mountain (pictured), the legendary first home of St. Patrick in Ireland. After being brought to the country as a slave in the 5th century, St. Patrick reputedly worked for 6 years as a shepherd on the mountain. In more recent times, Ballymena has produced another famous Irish son in Liam Neeson - the well-known actor was born and raised in Ballymena, and was presented with the 'Freedom of the Borough' in 2013.

Bushmills, County Antrim

culinary tour ireland

On the Map: Bushmills Village located just off the spectacular coast of Northern Ireland in County Antrim. The town is accessed via the A2 road, that connects the cities of Portrush (to the west) and Ballycastle (to the east).

Bushmills is the gateway to the Giant's Causeway, a unique rock formation formed 55 million years ago by cooling lava flows, although according to local legend the symmetrical columns were part of a bridge to Scotland built and then destroyed by the famous Irish giant, Finn McCool. Similar rock formations can be found on the Scottish coast. The Causeway visible today is all that remains of the bridge. If visiting the Causeway be sure to take the cliff walk route so that you descend to the water's edge and approach  the Causeway itself from the east. The views across to Scotland and west along the coast to the mountains of Donegal are magnificient. Bushmills is also famous as the home of the world's oldest whiskey distillery. The license to produce the famous malt whiskey was granted by King James I in 1608. Visitors can take a one hour guided tour which includes a tasting. Just west of Bushmills, the ruins of Dunluce Castle dramatically straddle sheer cliffs that plunge hundreds of feet into the sea. And of course you cannot leave County Antrim without testing your nerves on the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge which can be found just 6 miles east of Bushmills near the village of Ballintoy.

Giant's Causeway, County Antrim

culinary tour ireland

Location: Bushmills BT57 8SU, United Kingdom.  The Giant's Causeway is located in County Antrim on the northeastern coast of Northern Ireland. The Causeway is accessed via Causeway Road that runs north from the main A2 road (connecting Bushmills to the west and Ballycastle to the east).

The Giant's Causeway is a UNESCO Heritage site located in Northern Ireland. During the Paleogene period, County Antrim was subject to intense volcanic activity. As lava rapidly cooled, unique contraction and fracturing occurred, creating the distinctive hexagonal columns seen today. Irish legend of course has an alternate tale of the Causeway's creation!: The Irish giant Fionn MacCumhaill (Fionn McCool) built the causeway to walk to Scotland to fight his Scottish counterpart Benandonner. One version of the legend tells that Fionn fell asleep before he got to Scotland. When he did not arrive, the much larger Benandonner crossed the bridge looking for him. To protect Fionn, his wife Oonagh laid a blanket over him and pretended that the sleeping giant was actually their baby son. When Benandonner saw the size of the 'infant', he assumed the alleged father, Fionn, must be gigantic indeed. Benandonner fled home in terror, ripping up the Causeway in case he was followed by Fionn, and therefore only the Irish coastal steps remain.

Newgrange, County Meath

On the Map : Newgrange is located just north of Dublin City in County Meath in the east of Ireland. Newgrange is reached via the N51 road, which intersects with the main M1 motorway (connecting Dublin & Belfast) near the town of Drogheda.

Newgrange, in County Meath, crouches on a rise just north of the River Boyne. It is the focal point for a ceremonial area and megalithic cemetery that is 5,000 years old.  The tombs' passage is perfectly aligned to mark the Winter Solstice. Newgrange is one of the best examples in Western Europe of the type of monument known as a passage-grave or passage-tomb. According to the most reliable Carbon 14 dating techniques, Newgrange was constructed around 3200BC. This means it is at least 600 years older than the Giza Pyramids in Egypt, and 1,000 years older than its British counterpart, Stonehenge. If you are interested in visiting Newgrange during summer months, we highly recommend planning to arrive very early in the morning to guarantee entrance to this extremely popular site!

Trim, County Meath

culinary tour ireland

On The Map: Trim is located in County Meath in the Boyne Valley region of eastern Ireland. The town is accessed via the N3 & R154 from Dublin City (to the southeast) or via the R162 from Navan town (to the north).

The name Trim comes from the Irish 'Baile Atha Troim', which translates as 'the town of the ford of the alder trees' and its origin dates back to the 5th century A.D. Among its more recent claims to fame, is the filming of a major part of 'Braveheart' at Trim Castle (pictured). Trim is part of the Boyne Valley, located on the east coast of Ireland in County Meath, which contains the largest and most decorated megalithic sites in all of Ireland. It has been described as "the largest and most important expression of prehistoric megalithic art in Europe". The large Megalithic sites were built over 5000 years ago between 3800 and 3200 BC - built before both Stonehenge in England and the great pyramids in Egypt! Within a three square mile radius in the Boyne Valley are grouped more than 30 prehistoric monuments including the great passage tombs and their satellite structures, standing stones, barrows and other enclosures. The great sites of the Boyne Valley include Newgrange, Knowth, Dowth, Loughcrew, Fourknocks and the Hill of Tara. Neolithic communities built these sites over earlier sacred spots and it is suspected that they were used for a combination of different purposes, including burial tombs, sacred temples and astronomical observatories.

There are various sites to explore in the town, including a round tower (pictured), two well-preserved granite high crosses and the ruins of a Franciscan friary. 5 km away lies Kilkea Castle, once the residence of the Duke of Leinster, but now a hotel and golf resort. The castle was built by the famous English Norman Hugh de Lacy in 1180, and later passed to the Fitzgeralds. Gerald FitzGerald, 11th Earl of Kildare, is said to have practised magic in Kilkea Castle. His interest in alchemy caused much interest among his neighbours, and earned him the nickname 'The Wizard Earl'. The Earl died in 1585 and supposedly returns to haunt the castle every seventh year, mounted on a silver-shod white charger.

"Amazing Ireland Guided Vacation"

topardisewithlove.com

Jorie, I can't thank you enough for all your help, answering all my 50 million questions and also reassuring me that Ireland would be amazing. When switching my group from Egypt to a different destination, I was so flustered and not confident in where to go, but it was so easy to sell into the group. I have to say, Ireland was not necessarily at the top of my list, but oh my gosh, it is now! You and Authentic do an AMAZING job when it comes to Ireland! My group literally cannot stop talking about our trip and they ALL loved it. The hotels were amazing. Aghadoe and Glenlo literally took the spotlight. Our guide Seamus was phenomenal and our driver Ian was so funny. We all had such a good time! Even with the other 2 couples that were on the trip. I really can't think of one flaw or hiccup.. everything was so seamless and perfect. I think it was some long days driving for some, but ultimately I think everyone knew that it was inevitable to see all of the beauty of Ireland. The bus was so nice and it was nice that it was roomy enough for us all to spread out. Again, I can't really think of one thing that I was 'ehh..'. It was all so amazing! Again, I can't thank you enough.

"This Guided Vacation far exceeded my wildest dreams"

Lorraine M.

Dear Jen, thank you for all your assistance and patience with our Ireland vacation. This is my lifetime dream. Elegant and fabulous tour. The best guide and bus driver. Small, lovely. This trip far exceeds my wildest dreams. Seamus is witty, well informed and an excellent guide.

"Trip to London and Scotland"

My clients LOVED their trip to London and Scotland. They really enjoyed the hotels that Authentic Vacations recommended, especially the Rembrandt. Thank you!

"The entire Ireland trip was a dream"

Jennifer B.

Jackson, NJ

Ellie booked our dream vacation for a total of 15 days to Ireland. We did a self-driving tour with a car rental starting and ending in Dublin. We traveled the entire coastline staying 1 or 2 nights at each hotel. The places arranged for us got better and better each night, ending with our last night in a castle built in 1101. The entire trip was a dream. All the recommendations made to us by Ellie were spot on! I can not wait to work with her again. We plan on returning in a couple years with our adult children. I would definitely use Authentic Vacations again for any trip I plan on taking overseas.

"Great trip in Ireland & Scotland"

Ireland/Scotland trip was a great trip planned with our group and Jorie. We thoroughly enjoyed each city we visited in both countries. All our hotels were very nice but as older adults, I would advise to pack light which is hard to do if your visit is extended but we had to climb stairs in several places. My favorite thing in both countries are the people. Everyone was so friendly and inviting at hotels, restaurants and local sites. We felt completely safe and comfortable. I would agree with other travelers that driving is stressful for both driver and passengers especially in Ireland where the roads are extremely narrow with rock walls on each side. Next trip will include staying in certain cities with tours out. JerPoint Park in Ireland was a favorite of our group of 4. Authentic Vacations plans, reservations and communications were first rate.

"Wonderful Scottish and Irish adventure"

South Carolina

Lauren, thank you for putting together a wonderful Scottish and Irish adventure. In many unexpected ways it indeed was an adventure that we will remember forever. So sincere thanks. Despite a glitch in St Andrews your team's recovery actually made St Andrews the highpoint of our trip. Staying at Rusacks overlooking the first tee and eighteenth green of the old course was awesome. All the Hotels were first rate. Experiences - awesome The Clontarf Castle is an awesome way to the trip. Well done y'all.  Big city stays - We all felt like we could have used an extra day in the larger cities. They all had a story to tell, and we just had enough time to scratch the surface. Self-drive - while less expensive alternative, the person doing the driving misses out on a lot in transit, while the passenger's white knuckle thru the driver's learning process. Also, the roads in Scotland and Ireland are no joke.  Would recommend it is worth it to hire a private chauffer driver or go Small Guided for sure.

"Scotland Birthday Trip"

Adina, I'm following up on my client's train/whiskey tour/ birthday trip to Scotland in October. They had a wonderful time! The whiskey tour day was their favorite, made extra special by their driver Alec who was a superstar. My client's boyfriend is a real train enthusiast. They enjoyed all the train trips, and Nick was like a child on the Jacobite train. Thanks so much for your help with this trip. You clearly know Scotland and planned a very nice route with some unique requirements. I greatly appreciate your expertise and attentive service. I look forward to working with you again in the future. An early Happy Holidays!

"Memorable Trip in Italy"

Fort Thomas, KY

Amber, I received this email from my client Mrs. R this morning - I love being able to share these with you all :). "Loryl, WOW! What a wonderful trip we had in Italy! Thank you for helping make this trip so memorable. We have so many wonderful memories that we will cherish forever. It was a trip of a lifetime. Thank You!  I guess we need to start thinking about our next trip. "

Ireland isn’t the obvious vacation destination for foodies. However, the culinary choices have been expanding in recent years thanks to inventive local chefs and a reliance on getting fresh ingredients from both the land and the sea.

irelandonabudget.com

Some of the staples of the Irish diet include Irish stew, bacon and cabbage, boxty, Irish soda bread, coddle and colcannon.

Today’s Irish chefs are taking these dishes a step further, with much of that reflected in the food tours that you see below.

Most of the food tours in Ireland listed in this blog post (except for the private yacht experience off the Kinsale coast and the two-night stay in Waterford) range in price from €55/$60 US/£47 Sterling/$80 CAD/$90 AUD to around €120/$132 US/£102 Sterling/$175 CAD/$196 AUD per person.

Not all food tours listed here are suitable for everyone, so it’s best to ask beforehand if you have specific dietary needs.

We’ll kick off our time together with an aperitivo, Irish-style, over drinks at one of Ireland’s oldest and most historic pubs. After a pint of the black stuff, we’ll head over to the Liberties for a private welcome dinner featuring the best local food from around the Boyne Valley, while our hosts for the evening share stories from the burgeoning Irish food and drink scene.

After breakfast at our hotel, we’ll hit the road and head directly to Galway, Ireland’s culinary capital. After stashing our luggage at our new hotel in Eyre Square, we’ll have a light lunch featuring Irish farmhouse cheeses at one of our favorite cheese shops. We’ll have a little bit of time to explore Galway before heading to meet a sixth-generation distiller for a tour and tasting in the afternoon. We’ll be hosted by one of our favorite chefs on the island for dinner this evening, in a private room in one of Galway’s top restaurants.

We’re heading out to the wilds of Connemara on day three, beginning with a morning expedition to harvest oysters in the Atlantic. Lunch will be at a food truck café featuring homemade wild Atlantic fare, located in a breathtakingly beautiful setting. Later on, we’ll forage for herbs and learn how to make cocktails featuring local botanicals, before heading over to another Galway gem for dinner.

Galway & Connemara

Get ready for more fresh air on day four when we head to The Burren, one of Ireland’s wildest spots, known for its rocky landscape. We’ll visit a perfumery where certified organic scents are handcrafted using local botanicals, and then visit a goat farm where some of the finest Irish goat cheese is made. We’ll gather for a long-table lunch featuring a variety of food and drink prepared by members of the Burren Food Trail. In the afternoon, we’ll have the option of visiting the nearby Cliffs of Moher, before heading back to the hotel for a little bit of rest and relaxation. Dinner on this evening is on your own, and we’re happy to make suggestions for you.

We’ll say slán to Galway on day five, and head south to the foodie haven that is West Cork. Our first stop on this day will be for an exclusive cooking demonstration and lunch with an Irish farmer at her home outside Limerick. Our drive down south will take us right through Killarney National Park, where we will have the option of stretching our legs before completing our journey. We’ll celebrate our arrival at our country house hotel with their famous high tea service. Dinner this evening will be at a Michelin-starred restaurant on the coast, followed by an optional visit to a local pub.

Day 5 Galway to West Cork

Day 6 Kerry & West Cork

After an early breakfast, we’ll pop in the car for a quick jaunt up the scenic Wild Atlantic Way for a seaside discovery experience, where we’ll harvest local seaweed and enjoy an abundant lunch with a couple of our favorite local experts. There will be some time for rest in the afternoon or local shopping, before we head over to an exclusive farm tour followed by a scenic dinner hosted by a longtime Zingerman’s friends and local farmer/cheesemaker.

culinary tour ireland

We’re in for a special treat on this day! We’ll participate in a coastal harvest tour with a local fish smoker who’s been in business for more than thirty years. We’ll head out for a tour of our local guide’s secret spots, where we might find everything from brown shrimp to crabs to chanterelles! Weather depending, we’ll gather on a local beach for a cooking demonstration featuring our foraged seafood and then we’ll eat lunch! Following a quick stop in the cute small town of Clonakilty, we’ll reconvene for dinner at a small, rustic restaurant featuring the very best of local, seasonal, and foraged ingredients from the waters and wilds of West Cork.

As hard as it is to leave the rugged, wild coastal beauty of West Cork behind, we can’t stay forever! We’ll depart our hotel after breakfast en route to the city of Cork, stopping along the way for a tour of a family-run dairy that specializes in unpasteurized buffalo, sheep, and cow’s milk cheeses made in Southern Mediterranean style. We’ll learn about how they came to raise buffalo in Ireland, and enjoy lunch at their restaurant. After lunch, we’ll head directly to Ballymaloe House Hotel, where we’ll unwind with cocktails in the garden followed by dinner at chef Darina Allen’s much loved restaurant.

West Cork to Cork

After a leisurely breakfast, we’ll enjoy a private cooking class and lunch at Ballymaloe. After lunch, we’ll head into Cork for a tour of the English Market, followed by some free time to explore the city. We’ll reconvene for dinner at one of the most popular seafood spots in the city.

Cork to Dublin

Our last full day of the trip! After breakfast at our beloved Ballymaloe, it’s time to head north towards the capital city. We’ll arrive in Dublin in time for the city’s best fish and chips, and then we’ll travel to our hotel in the countryside to the northwest of the city. We’ll end our time together after this incredible journey with a bang. We’ll gather at one of Ireland’s most exciting restaurants, for a Michelin-starred tasting menu dinner featuring only ingredients that are grown, foraged, or raised on the island.

*One thing to note: this itinerary is the current plan, and, things may change. We will make every effort to provide the tours and experiences that are described above. However, the nature of the places we’ll be visiting — not typical tourist destinations — means that plans may change at the last minute. Also, you always have the option of skipping a particular excursion, but please note that we will be unable to make refunds for any missed meals or other events.

Kinsale : a Culinary Odyssey

Kinsale is a town with many sails or strings to its bow. Originally a Norman walled town which became a thriving fishing port, its Irish name is ‘Ceann tSáile’ which means ‘Head of the Sea’. The town thrived on the prolific mackerel fishery where men fished while their wives and daughters processed fish along the quays and sold to traders.

Over time in Kinsale, fishing was usurped by tourism, helped by its incomparable beauty, medieval architecture and salty sea air. Kinsale has evolved as a world class gourmand’s delight, aided by the proliferation of many high class restaurants and eateries in the town.

Suzanne : Founder & Lead Guide

The Kinsale Food Tours was the brainchild of Suzanne Burns who returned to Ireland after over a decade living abroad. She started these tours in 2016, from a combined love for the town itself and an obsession with food, its origins and the coast.

Her career started as a Zoologist, focusing on freshwater and marine plants and animals in Ireland. She worked as a scallop farmer for her Honours thesis for her degree. Her work took her travelling for over a decade in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. After graduating, she spent a year in Australia, working as a beetle technician in the Australian Museum in Sydney. She returned to Ireland to fulfil her Masters in Dublin.

She then moved to New Zealand for a decade working as a freshwater biologist and researcher, She changed tack after 5 years, becoming a wildlife guide and head crew on a boat, working with albatrosses, penguins, sea lions and fur seals.

A chance encounter led her to Vancouver Island, Canada for 6 months where she worked as a wildlife writer and photographer, working primarily with wild orcas and humpback whales. On returning to Ireland, she started the Kinsale Food Tours. Kinsale Food Tours is part of the Wild Atlantic Way

Testimonials

Some of our amazing guests

“By far one of our favourite things we did on our 2 week holiday. Suzanne was not only extremely knowledgeable about everything (not just food ),her personality made the experience even more lovely. We will definitely be back and we will be more adventurous. We will be doing the “food and foraging” tour that she offers next. I simply can not express just how great this was!!!!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! ”
“We had such a fantastic day out with Suzanne, who introduced us to some fabulous food and such lovely people who took so much pride in what they were offering, plus we also learnt about the history of Kinsale. Suzanne has a great sense of humour, and so easy to get on with, we just spent the day laughing, eating and drinking, it was brilliant !! Come hungry as the portions are BIG !!! If in Kinsale you have to do this tour with Suzanne.”

Evelyn Brierly

“Suzanne was an outstanding host and guide providing fascinating insight to both the food and the town of Kinsale. Suzane met us on time and took us on a casual walk about town as she talked about its history, building’s and its people. The tour was a perfectly set up 4 course meal in 4 different venues. Each venue was unique, comfortable and quite tasty! It became evident that she is well known in town with everyone saying hello as we strolled about.”
“Fun and Tasty. What a wonderful and delightful introduction to Kinsale food. Suzanne lead us to 4 stops each with their own unique food contribution. Not only did Suzanne introduce to establishments we would not have found, she provided historical perspective. Each stop was tasty and fun. And she provided great recommendations on others spots to try. She has an irreverent Irish sense of humor and was a delightful guide. Highly recommend”
“Highlight of the south of Ireland. My husband and I joined the food tour of Kinsale for our 10th wedding anniversary because almost as much as we love each other, we both enjoy eating well, even more. This tour did exceedingly well at that and then some. Our host/guide weaved both history, tall tales and gastronomic expertise in a professional yet fun and approachable matter, that I think you would have to be a lonely stone at the sea not to fall in love with not just only her but the fantastic culinary and historic experience that awaits you in this gem of the world."
“This is our third time to do Suzanne's food tour in Kinsale. This time we also included foraging. i was amazed at the depth of Suzanne's knowledge about the seaweeds and foods that can be found at the beach. The food at the restaurants and food stops was also fabulous. Our group loves doing the food tour, and look forward to it each time we return! Suzanne not only teaches us a lot as she takes you on the food tour, she makes it lots of fun! We can't recommend this tour enough! Yummy food and lots of fun, learning and laughter!”
“MUST DO! An incredible experience in Kinsale. Absolutely wonderful afternoon tasting food of not only outstanding quality, but also impressive quantity! Suzanne was brilliant with thoughtful touches and expert knowledge. Can’t wait to return to Kinsale and go all over again!”
