Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance Company Review

Extra protection to cover your travel related expenses

Company Overview

In a perfect world, we would never have to change plans or delay a trip or vacation. Since plans do change and you may need extra protection to cover your travel-related expenses, there is travel insurance. One company to consider for your travel insurance needs is Generali Global Assistance, formerly known as CSA Travel Protection Insurance Company, which has been providing protection for travelers since 1991. Even though the company rebranded in 2017 to Generali Global Assistance, there are travel insurance plans that still carry the CSA Travel Protection name.

The company’s U.S. operations are based out of San Diego, California. Generali Global Assistance is owned by Europ Assistance Group (EA), which is a worldwide organization providing emergency assistance services and has been in business since 1963.

Financial Stability

Generali Group has an A (Excellent) rating with A.M. Best Insurance rating organization , as well as a stable A- rating with Fitch and a stable Baa1 rating with Moody's.

Better Business Bureau Rating

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) file was originally opened as the CSA Travel Protection Insurance Company in 1994 and has been an accredited business since 2009. Since the brand change, the customer service rating of Generali Global Assistance has since maintained its “A+” rating with the BBB. There are a total of 197 customer reviews with 556 total customer complaints in three years, as of Sept. 2021. Of those complaints; there were 443 with products/services, 13 with advertising/sales issues, 71 with billing/collection issues, 24 with guarantee/warranty issues, and 5 were delivery issues. Also, of these complaints, 98 were resolved to the customer’s satisfaction. The company has a composite score rating of 1.03 out of 5 stars.

Available Plans

Travel insurance plans available through Generali Global Assistance are the Standard, Preferred , and Premium plans. You can review the information for each plan, receive a quote, and buy coverage right from the Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance website. Preferred offers the added benefits of covering sports equipment and Premium is designed for expensive cruises tours. All three plans offer a combination of the following travel insurance benefits:

  • Trip Cancellation
  • Trip Interruption
  • Travel Delay
  • Baggage Delay
  • Missed Connection

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance has a 10-day free look clause meaning that you can change your mind within 10 days and receive a refund as long as you have not yet left for your trip. There are three travel insurance plans with comprehensive coverage options, making it an easy process to find the right travel insurance plan and buy your policy online.

Generali Global Assistance provides its customers with a 24/7 emergency assistance hotline available from anywhere in the world. There are attractive optional service options including concierge, identity theft resolution, and telemedicine services.

Read your description of coverage carefully. If you have homeowners or renters insurance, those policies are considered primary and Generali Global Assistance will only pay what your primary insurance policy does not pay.  Some complaints from policyholders have stated that the policy language is confusing as to what is and is not a valid reason for canceling your trip.

The Bottom Line

It is a good idea to check and see how much coverage you have through other insurance policies before purchasing additional travel insurance. If you feel you need additional coverage than what you already have, Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance is a good option to consider. CSA travel insurance is owned by Europe Assistance, an insurance company that specializes in providing emergency assistance services.

Launched in 1991, and headquartered in San Diego, California, CSA Travel Insurance has protected millions of travelers worldwide from common travel issues such as canceled trips and delays, as well as 24/7 assistance with emergencies such as hurricanes and medical evacuations by helicopter.

Whether you’re a single person traveling alone or a budget-conscious parent taking a family trip, CSA has options for you.

CSA Travel Protection

The CSA Custom Travel Protection Plan is designed to offer affordable trip cancellation insurance for travelers of all ages.

Coverage can be purchased per single trip and canceled within ten days of purchase if needed.

Their online cost calculator provides obligation-free travel insurance quotes .

CSA offers a variety of affordable coverage, and its range of service providers across the globe ensure that customers can travel with peace of mind, knowing that help is only a phone call away.

CSA received an A+rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and its underwriter, Generali , has high marks from A.M. Best and Moody’s.

Benefits of CSA Travel Insurance

CSA offers two types of trip insurance for travelers of all ages which cover trip cancellation, delays, and interruptions.

Customers have a ten day, obligation-free period to cancel their travel insurance should they decide they no longer need it, and get full reimbursement as long as they have not yet left for their trip.

Customers may purchase any one of the CSA Travel Protection Plans online for their convenience.

Medical assistance, baggage cover, accidental death, and group cover are available options, and children are protected under their parents’ coverage.

Travelers can have peace of mind knowing that 24/7 customer support is available from over 108,000 service providers internationally.

There are no exclusions on the CSA Custom Travel Protection Luxe Plan, and both CSA trip insurance packages offer extras that include return travel arrangements, rebooking assistance, lost baggage search, and legal aid.

CSA’s travel insurance reviews have been favorable thanks to exclusive services such as ‘Consult a Doctor’, which links customers to medical professionals anywhere in the world in case an emergency strikes while traveling abroad.

What’s Covered With CSA Travel Insurance?

The most common claims covered are:

  • Trip cancellation: If you’re forced to cancel your vacation for any of the reasons covered by CSA Trip Insurance, you may be reimbursed in full. For more flexibility regarding cancellations for any other reason, make sure you add it to your travel insurance package when making your first deposit.
  • Trip interruption: Regardless of whether you fall sick with the flu or you’re forced to return to work due to unforeseen circumstances, the costs for a return flight or for unused accommodations could be covered by the trip insurance.
  • Travel delays and missed connections: Severe weather can interrupt flights for longer than expected, even if you’ve allowed for delays in your travel schedule. A holdup during the first leg of a trip can result in missing the next flight, cruise, or tour departure. CSA trip insurance provides ample coverage for delays and missed connections.
  • Baggage delay and loss: In the event that an airline loses your luggage, they won’t cover the lost items’ cash value, quite an annoyance when the luggage contains essential items such as clothes and much-needed toiletries. Likewise, the airline isn’t required to provide essential items if there is baggage delay. CSA’s Custom Travel Luxe Plan gives you $500 for replacing baggage whether it’s lost or delayed by the airline or for any other reason.
  • Medical expenses: The Custom Luxe plan provides generous coverage for a wide range of medical expenses while you are traveling. This high-end plan also covers accidental death and dismemberment, including funeral expenses.
  • Emergency assistance: The 24-hour travel hotline helps travelers transfer cash, find a doctor, rent a car in the event of an emergency, or make an emergency airline reservation. Concierge and emergency assistance services are also provided.

CSA Travel Insurance Plans

CSA Trip Insurance offers two different plans depending on your budget:

CSA Custom Travel Protection Luxe Plan

An ideal, comprehensive coverage plan for single travelers or groups, CSA’s Luxe Plan offers a range of high-end options such as full reimbursements for trip cancellations and comprehensive coverage in the event of trip interruptions, travel delays, or missed connections.

If baggage is lost or delayed, the plan may pay out up to $500 for items such as clothing and toiletries, even if your luggage is found later.

Coverage is also provided for medical emergencies, airline reservations, cash transfers, emergency car rentals, and for dependents through their parents.

CSA Custom Travel Insurance Plan

This budget-friendly policy offers several perks, although its reduced costs come with coverage limits.

Travelers enjoy coverage that includes concierge service and identity theft resolution as well as 24-hour emergency medical services.

In the event of lost or stolen luggage, CSA trip insurance covers its cash value.

Nonetheless, the CSA Custom Travel Protection Plan does not offer coverage for preexisting conditions.

Even with its limitations, customers still enjoy plan benefits such as reimbursement for trip cancellations and delays, lost baggage, and certain medical and dental emergencies (excluding preexisting conditions).

The following chart compares the covered reasons for the Custom Travel Protection Luxe Plan and the Custom Travel Protection Plan.

The following chart compares the limits between the Custom Travel Protection Luxe Plan and the Custom Travel Protection Plan.

Add-ons such as travel assistance services, return travel arrangements, and roadside assistance may also be purchased on the CSA Custom Travel Protection Luxe Plan.

Add-ons provide protection that goes above and beyond regular benefits.

On the other hand, the optional cover on the Custom Travel Protection Plan is limited to $9 per day for rental car damage.

csa travel medical insurance

How Much Does CSA Travel Insurance Cost?

Travel insurance costs are based on factors such as destination and departure lag, and usually range between four and eight percent of the total trip cost.

CSA does not have age limits for travelers, and dependents are covered through their parents on both the Custom Luxe and Custom Travel Protection Plans.

However, the coverage is only valid for single trips.

Online quotes are based on the total cost of the trip and are available in real-time on the CSA website, allowing travelers to immediately determine the amount of travel insurance they’ll need.

All refunds and claims must be made within ten days of purchasing the policy, either full reimbursements for trip cancellations or unused accommodations and return flight reimbursement for trip interruptions.

Claims can be started online through the CSA website or through fax, email, or regular mail.

CSA Travel Protection Company Ratings & Reviews

Despite receiving some negative reviews, CSA Travel Insurance has an A+ rating from the BBB.

CSA strives to resolve all customer queries and provides feedback to its customers. Negative reviews are usually related to terms and conditions stated in the fine print on insurance contracts.

In 2017, CSA Travel Protection won two Stevie ® Awards for Sales and Customer Services. CSA Travel Protection was voted one of the best trip insurance companies in 2018.

Financial Stability

CSA Travel Insurance policies are underwritten by Generali , an Italian insurance company founded in 1831.

As of 2010, Generali was the world’s second-largest insurer (based on revenue) making it a financially sound international company.

Financial strength is essential since the insurer must be able to pay its customers’ current and future claims.

CSA has earned Moody’s Long-term Corporate Obligation Rating of Baa2 implying moderate credit risk, which is acceptable in the travel industry.

CSA’s A.M. Best financial rating is a+.

CSA Travel Insurance Customer Assistance Services

Travelers can call any of the more than 108,000 service providers available internationally for assistance ranging from emergency cash transfers, identity theft resolution services, eyeglass, and medication replacement, to return travel arrangements.

Help is available over the phone 24/7 eliminating time zone difference and providing peace of mind for travelers requiring assistance at any time.

CSA lacks basic digital options, as it does not have a mobile application, and their online experience only offers an online cost calculator that lets customers determine the cost of insurance per trip.

Furthermore, apart from commenting on review pages, customers can expect some delays receiving responses to emails or for an operator to answer their call.

Customer assistance does include help with rebooking, lost baggage search, lost passport/document assistance, emergency cash, translation services, legal assistance, and roadside assistance.

Additional benefits include medical assistance services, physician referral, medical case management, arrangements for medical payments, emergency prescription replacement, and eyeglass replacement.

Concierge services provided by CSA include restaurant referrals and reservations, event referrals and bookings, and ground transportation.

TRAVEL INSURANCE FAQS

The Trip Cancellation coverage included with your plan goes into effect the day after you purchase travel protection at 12:01 a.m. On your scheduled departure date, once you begin your trip, you can no longer file a claim for Trip Cancellation.

As soon as you depart, the other coverages in your plan become effective, including Medical and Dental, Trip Interruption, Travel Delay, Emergency Assistance and Transportation, Baggage and more . Those coverages end as soon as one of these occurs: You return from your trip, the trip is completed, your scheduled return date arrives (unless you qualify for extension of coverage ), or your arrival at the destination on a one-way trip.

A variety of Travel Services are included with your plan. Concierge Services are available to use as soon as you purchase your plan and end when you return. 24/7 Travel Assistance Services can be used during your trip. ID Theft Resolution Services are also available for a full 180 days starting on the scheduled departure date.

Yes. All of our travel protection plans include Trip Cancellation coverage that reimburses your trip costs if you cancel for a covered reason . One of those reasons is a traveling or non-traveling family member being hospitalized or passing away due to an illness or injury and you are unable to take your trip. The hospitalization or death must occur while your travel insurance coverage is in effect.

It’s very important that you understand who is considered a “family member” when you buy travel insurance with this in mind. See our definition of Family Member for more details.

Pro tip: The death of a family member is also a covered reason for our Trip Interruption benefit , in case trouble strikes back home during your trip.

Generali Global Assistance offers a variety of travel insurance coverages and services to help protect your trip. Our plans can help with a number of unexpected problems, including trip cancellations and interruptions ; travel delays ; lost, damaged and delayed baggage ; and unexpected sickness, injury and medical evacuation .

Additionally, our 24/7 Travel Assistance , Concierge and ID Theft Resolution services are included with our plans. These services round out our travel protection plans to provide real-time assistance when you need it on your trip.

If you discover bedbugs while staying at your accommodations, we suggest you inform your host and seek remedy from them. If you require medical treatment as a result of bedbugs during your trip, that may be covered by the Medical and Dental coverage that is part of our travel protection plans.

Yes, you can actually buy Generali travel insurance before you make any trip payments.

We suggest you buy a travel insurance plan when you make your first trip payment, like airfare or a cruise. That way you have a long coverage period in case you need to cancel your trip. Later on, you can add coverage to the same plan for your hotel, tours and other pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs. It’s best to contact us to add coverage soon after you make new trip payments to be sure you have coverage for your full trip cost.

If you purchase our Premium plan you can qualify for coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, as long as the travel protection plan is purchased prior to or within 24 hours of your final trip payment, you are medically able to travel at the time the plan is purchased, and all prepaid trip costs that are subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions have been insured.

At our Travel Insurance Definitions page , you can see how we define Pre-Existing Conditions or see Plan Documents for full details.

In order to qualify for coverage due to sickness, including COVID-19:

You, a Traveling Companion or your Service Animal get Sick after you purchase your plan, must seek the in person treatment of a Physician and can’t travel according to a physician. Or a non-traveling Family Member is hospitalized after you purchase your plan and you are unable to make the trip.

Important Note: Your or your traveling companion’s sickness must first occur after you purchase your plan in order to have coverage. Pre-existing medical conditions are generally excluded from coverage. However, coverage is available with the Premium plan if you purchased your plan prior to or within 24 hours of making Final Payment for your trip, provided other requirements are also met. Review Plan Documents for full details.

If something happen during your trip and you need to use your travel insurance, you’ll need to file a claim to be reimbursed. We have a page that explains how to start a claim , a great resource for learning more about the claims process.

Let’s say your baggage is delayed* and you need to buy clothes and toiletries, you would submit a claim to seek reimbursement. Travel insurance comes in handy in scenarios like this.

Oftentimes, travel insurance is offered when buying a cruise, airfare or booking a vacation rental. We encourage customers to pay attention to the fine print when considering insurance provided by travel suppliers. For example, a cruise line’s travel insurance may not pay cash to cover a cancelled or interrupted cruise, but instead offers credit towards a future cruise. If you prefer cash reimbursement, that’s reason to consider purchasing directly from a travel insurance provider instead.

We recommend bringing a print out of your plan documents with you when traveling so if you are affected by a storm and lose power or can’t connect to the internet, you’ll still know what number to call and what instructions to follow.

* Baggage Delay coverage can only be claimed if the delay lasts for the amount of time specified in the Schedule of Benefits

All travel protection plans available from this website include a combination of:

  • Travel Insurance and
  • Travel Assistance Services,

which together help give you aid and comfort during your travels.

For example:

  • our Travel Insurance can reimburse you for medical costs if you fall and twist your ankle;
  • while the 24/7 Travel Assistance included with the plan can help you find the closest doctor or help with translation.
  • our Travel Insurance can reimburse for travel delay or travel interruption;
  • while the 24/7 Travel Assistance Services included with the plan can help you find new flights home.

The price of your Travel Protection Plan includes the travel insurance premium and the cost of the Travel Assistance Services. A detailed price breakdown of the insurance and assistance services is available by phone or email.

Yes, Monkeypox is treated like any other illness and can be covered by Generali travel insurance.

Recently, an outbreak of Monkeypox has spread across several countries that don’t normally report monkeypox, including the United States. The virus spreads through close contact with someone who has Monkeypox.

If you, a family member or a traveling companion are diagnosed with Monkeypox before or during your trip, and meet the requirements for coverage due to sickness , you can be covered for Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Travel Delay, Medical & Dental, and Emergency Assistance & Transportation, in addition to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance services . You can also be covered for additional lodging expenses and extension of your travel insurance plan if you are required to isolate at your destination and your return is delayed.

For your safety and the safety of others, insured travelers who believe they may have contracted the virus should call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team who will coordinate local treatment on your behalf.

Rental Car Damage coverage is included with the Premium plan and is available as an optional add-on coverage with the Standard and Preferred plans . It provides coverage if your rental car is damaged from collision, theft, vandalism, natural disasters or any other cause beyond your control. Coverage is provided for either the cost of repairs and rental charges charged by the rental company while the vehicle is being repaired or the Actual Cash Value of the car, whichever is less.

Note: Trucks, trailers, motorcycles and other vehicles are not eligible for coverage. Review your Description of Coverage/Policy for a full list of excluded vehicles.

Travel insurance helps protect you from certain unexpected and potentially costly events that can occur before or during your trip. Ultimately, it’s meant to help you travel with more peace of mind so you can worry less and focus on enjoying your time.

Unlike auto insurance, travel insurance coverage is elective, which means it’s up to you to decide if you want it. One of the most common reasons people consider travel insurance is to help protect the money that they’ve spent on their vacation. If you must cancel or interrupt your trip, there are often cancellation penalties tied to the travel arrangements that you’ve made and those cancellation penalties tend to get more severe as the departure date gets closer. You may only get a portion of your trip cost back if you have to cancel your plans—or none at all.

Insurance coverage for Trip Cancellation can reimburse you for unused, non-refundable, prepaid trip costs if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, such as sickness, job loss, flight cancellation due to adverse weather and more. Similarly, insurance coverage for Trip Interruption can recoup your trip costs if you’re unable to continue your trip because of a covered reason—our plans also provide reimbursement for additional transportation costs to help you return home or rejoin your group.

Travel insurance provides coverage for other unexpected, out-of-pocket costs as well, such as meals and overnight lodging if your travel is delayed *, clothing and personal items if your baggage is delayed* and medical expenses if you get sick or injured during your trip. Plans also provide insurance coverage for your bags and personal effects during your trip and some offerings help protect your sporting equipment while traveling, along with a variety of other available coverages. We recommend comparing our plans and choosing the option that best suits you and your trip.

*Travel Delay and Baggage Delay coverages can only be claimed if the delay lasts for the amount of time specified in the Schedule of Benefits

Trip Cancellation for Any Reason coverage is available as an optional upgrade to our Premium plan. This coverage reimburses you up to 60% of the penalty amount for your trip when you cancel for any reason. These requirements must be met in order to qualify for Trip Cancellation for Any Reason coverage:

  • The travel insurance plan is purchased within 24 hours of initial deposit for your trip
  • You are not disabled from travel at the time you purchase the plan
  • You have insured 100% of all arrangements that are subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions
  • You cancel your trip 48 hours or more prior to the scheduled departure date
  • The trip cost per person is no more than $10,000
  • All insured travelers cancel the trip

Generali travel insurance plans can be purchased up to 18 months before the trip departure date and up until the day prior to departure.

PURCHASING ONLINE

Try our Trip Cost Calculator to help get an accurate travel insurance quote

You may insure any pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs. These are costs associated with your trip, that you paid before departing on your trip, and would be lost in the event of a trip cancellation. Take into account flights, cruises, accommodations, tours, entertainment and other trip costs that could be lost if you're prevented from taking your trip.

When buying a Generali travel insurance plan , you will be asked to enter the total trip cost for all travelers covered under the plan.

For example: A family that is taking a flight, staying in one hotel room and renting a car should include the total non-refundable cost for the hotel room and rental car, and the individual air ticket costs for each traveler, including children.

In order to qualify for coverage for pre-existing medical conditions or the Trip Cancellation for Any Reason add-on coverage (only available with the Premium plan), one of the requirements is that all prepaid trip costs that are subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions must be insured.

Yes. If you received a voucher or credit from a travel company based on previous payment for a booking that is being transferred to a new trip, the new trip can be covered by one of our travel protection plans.

Generali Global Assistance proudly stands behind its products and services. That's why we offer a " free look " on all our travel protection plans. If you purchase a plan and are not satisfied, you have 10 days to contact us directly to indicate your desire to cancel (residents of Indiana may cancel within 30 days of purchase). If you haven't already left on your trip or filed a claim, you will receive a complete refund of your plan cost.

NOTE: The plan cost is non-refundable after the “free look” time frame allowed under the plan purchased.

SUPPORT AND SERVICES

Travel protection plans from Generali Global Assistance include various coverages and services that can help you when your passport is stolen, lost, or damaged. Our plans do not offer benefits in case you experience delays in receiving your passport in time for your trip.

If your passport is stolen before your trip begins, and you report the theft, Trip Cancellation coverage can reimburse your insured trip costs.

If your passport is stolen during your trip, Trip Interruption coverage can reimburse you for expenses associated with rescheduling your travel while waiting for your passport replacement. Also, if your passport is lost or stolen, you can use Travel Delay coverage to be reimbursed for reasonable expenses during the delay, like accommodations and food.

Baggage coverage can even cover fees related to getting a new passport if the old one is lost, stolen or damaged during your trip.

All plans come with those coverages, plus 24/7 Travel Assistance Services , which includes assistance locating or replacing lost or stolen items and connecting you with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the area you are visiting. Identity Theft Resolution Services are also included and can help in the event your passport is stolen.

Every Generali Global Assistance plan includes our acclaimed 24-Hour Emergency Assistance Services, for immediate aid accessible from anywhere in the world. If you need emergency help for an available service, you can call 877-243-4135 toll-free 24 hours a day from within the United States, or call collect to 240-330-1529 from around the world. If you cannot call collect from your location, dial direct and give the assistance provider your telephone number and location and they will call you back. When calling, you should have available your policy number and plan code, your location, a local telephone number, and details of the situation. In the event of a life-threatening emergency, please first call the local emergency authorities to receive immediate assistance and then contact the assistance provider.

You can create a Generali Global Assistance travel insurance online account using your email address, Facebook, Twitter or Google logins. An account allows you to save personal information, like your address, so you don’t need to enter that information every time you purchase a plan. From your account, you can also access information about past travel insurance plans that you’ve purchased.

Tip: If you create an account after you buy a plan, use the same email address to create an account that you used to buy the plan. That will allow you to access the plan information in the Purchased Plans section of your account.

If you need to change something about a plan you have already purchased, such as adding coverage for extra trip costs, changing a name on the plan, or changing the travel dates, call our customer service representatives at 800-874-2442. They can help modify your plan any time before trip departure, as long as a loss has not yet occurred and the change is allowed. They are available to assist you 24/7.

Note: If you're signed into your Generali Global Assistance account, the name, address, phone and email from that account will auto-fill the form when you buy a plan. Before purchasing your plan, please verify all your information on the purchase page is correct.

If you have a Generali Global Assistance online account , you can access policy documents for plans you have purchased that are tied to that account. Otherwise, you can use our Retrieve Policy tool to find your Description of Coverage/Policy. You may also call our Customer Service Department at 800-874-2442, and a representative will help you get another copy.

If you need help from Concierge , Emergency Assistance , Telemedicine , or Identity Theft Resolution services included with your travel protection plan, you can call 877-243-4135 toll-free 24 hours a day from within the United States, or call 240-330-1529 collect from around the world.

You are eligible to use Concierge Services at any time after you purchase a Generali Global Assistance plan, there are even pre-trip services available before you travel . The Emergency Assistance Services become available when you actually start your trip. Emergency Assistance and Concierge Services end the earliest of: midnight on the day the plan expires; when you reach your return destination; or when you complete your trip.

Our plans include Medical and Dental coverage with access to Telemedicine services that connect travelers instantly with a network of physicians for information, advice, and treatment, including prescription medication, when appropriate and legally permitted. Telemedicine service is available during your domestic or international trip. Limitations may exist on the availability of prescription medication outside of the U.S.

Identity Theft Resolution Services are automatically included for a full 180 days starting on the traveler’s scheduled departure date. *Identity Theft Resolution does not include assistance for thefts involving non-U.S. bank accounts.

STORMS AND NATURAL DISASTERS

In the past few years, massive patches of Sargassum seaweed periodically wash up on the shore, often in Florida and the Caribbean. Travelers visiting the beaches affected by a seaweed invasion may not have the vacation experience they expected.

Our travel insurance plans do not provide coverage to reimburse you for trip costs if you decide to cancel your trip because seaweed is affecting your destination. But, with our Trip Cancellation for Any Reason add-on coverage, you can be reimbursed up to 60% of the penalty amount for your trip when you cancel for any reason, including seaweed. Trip Cancellation for Any Reason coverage is available as an optional upgrade to our Premium Plan if you meet certain requirements .

Sargassum seaweed may also be harmful to humans. Besides smelling bad, decaying seaweed on the beach can cause respiratory problems for some people, and can cause skin rashes if in close contact. If you experience these symptoms and require medical attention, our plans include Medical & Dental coverage that can reimburse you for medical expenses during your trip and 24/7 Travel Assistance that can help you find a local doctor. In this case, you may also be covered for Trip Interruption .

Red tide is a harmful algal bloom that sometimes occurs in the ocean water on the coast of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. It can be harmful to marine life and humans. Toxins can also be released into the air, leading to respiratory irritation, especially for people with respiratory conditions, such as asthma.

Generali travel insurance plans do not include red tide as a covered reason for trip cancellation. But there are instances when our plans can help. Here are the details:

  • Trips that are canceled because travelers do not wish to visit an area with red tide will not be reimbursed unless you purchased the Premium plan and added the Trip Cancellation for Any Reason coverage .
  • If you encounter red tide before your trip and become too sick to travel, your trip costs may be reimbursed.
  • Our plans may cover emergency medical treatment if a traveler becomes sick on their trip due to red tide. In this case, you may also be covered for Trip Interruption .

If you buy travel insurance after a storm is named, your plan will not provide coverage for storm-related claims. See our Storm Coverage Alerts for more information.

We suggest you buy a travel insurance plan when you make your first trip payment, like airfare or a cruise. That way you have a long coverage period in case you need to cancel your trip, and if you need to file a claim related to a storm, you will have bought the plan well before the storm was forecasted.

If you are evacuated during your trip due to adverse weather or a natural disaster, we encourage you to seek accommodations out of harm’s way—with the hope that you can return to your trip when the evacuation ends. Generali Global Assistance reimburses for certain out-of-pocket costs during the evacuation, such as hotel stays, meals and local transportation. The delay will have to be for the specified amount of time listed in your Plan Documents .

The plans include coverage for insured trip costs you can’t use when a mandatory evacuation is in effect as long as the loss for your trip occurs within the first 30* calendar days after the mandatory evacuation order is issued. You can qualify for reimbursement for the remaining portion of your trip if you have 50%* or less—or 4* days or less—of your reservation left when the evacuation order is lifted at your destination.

*Day and percentage requirements may vary by state. Review your Plan Documents for full details.

If your destination is evacuated due to adverse weather or a natural disaster, such as a hurricane, you can be reimbursed for your insured trip costs. The plans can only provide coverage for losses that occur for your trip within the first 30* calendar days after the initial mandatory evacuation order was issued. You qualify for a full cancellation if you have 50%* or less—or 4* days or less—of your trip remaining when the evacuation order is lifted, at your destination.

Plans include similar coverage if the accommodation at your destination is deemed uninhabitable.

You can also be covered if your flight is canceled or delayed because of adverse weather.

To start your claim, visit our eClaims portal and enter your policy number.

If you have questions, FAQs can be found at the eClaims portal, more guidance is available at our How to Start a Claim page .

How single trip travel insurance works

How to choose between travel insurance companies, best plans for single trip travel insurance, other tips for travel insurance for a single trip, travel cards that come with complimentary travel insurance, single travel insurance for a trip recapped.

There are many types of travel insurance, including plans that’ll reimburse you for emergency medical expenses or unexpected travel delays. Along with coverage types, there are also different durations of travel insurance.

Single trip travel insurance will cover you during one vacation, while multitrip or annual travel insurance can last for multiple outings. Let’s take a look at single trip travel insurance, what kind of coverage you can expect and how to choose a plan that works for you.

Purchasing a travel insurance plan is fairly simple, as is making a claim. It generally goes like this:

You gather a few quotes from travel insurance companies.

You pick a plan that suits your needs and customize it to your liking.

You purchase your plan and include a date for it to start.

You go on your trip.

If something happens (such as a flight delay), keep the proof.

You make a claim with your travel insurance company.

The travel insurance company reimburses you.

There are a few variations in how this can work (for instance, some travel insurance plans can pay a medical provider directly), but for the most part, this is how the process will go. This is the case whether you have one-trip travel insurance or multitrip travel insurance.

» Learn more: How to find the best travel insurance

There are several travel insurance companies out there, which can make choosing a plan difficult.

NerdWallet analysis found that some travel insurance providers rise above the rest in terms of breadth and depth of coverage, cost, customizability, and overall customer satisfaction. Jump to see our findings on the bets plans for single trip travel insurance.

However, before choosing a company and purchasing a plan, consider these questions:

How much am I willing to pay?

Do I want trip protection, emergency medical coverage or both?

Do I already have coverage somewhere?

How much customizability does my plan need?

Do I need coverage for preexisting conditions?

Will I be doing any sort of adventure activities?

Once you’ve answered these questions, do your due diligence and get quotes from multiple sources. Different providers will offer differing levels of coverage at varying prices, so it’s in your best interest to generate as many quotes as possible and read the fine print.

To make it simple, travel insurance aggregators such as Squaremouth (a NerdWallet partner) will provide you with multiple quotes at a time.

If you’re interested in getting travel insurance, do yourself a favor and consider these tips before making any purchases:

Consult your medical insurance provider to see whether it offers coverage out of country .

Consider an annual plan to save money if you make multiple trips per year.

Check your credit card for complimentary travel insurance . Many offer this benefit, and if its limits are satisfactory, you can book your travels with it and avoid buying a separate policy out-of-pocket altogether. More on this in the next section.

If you're looking to get coverage for a one-off trip, among your best options is to simply pay for your travel with a card that includes travel insurance as a benefit.

Most travel cards will include coverage for things like trip interruption , trip delays and lost luggage .
