13 Best Scenic Train Rides in Colorado You Can’t Miss (2023)

  • By jesse.sumrak

scenic train trips from denver

The  Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Ride  is one of my favorite scenic train rides in Colorado. As a Ouray resident, I’ve had the opportunity to ride this train in various seasons for fun, adventure, and even holiday tradition.

You hop on the train in Durango, and it takes you on a beautiful 3.5-hour ride through the San Juan Mountains to the mining town of Silverton. The train ride features:

  • Rolling hills
  • Views of epic mountains
  • Steep cliffs (close enough to touch…but don’t touch!)
  • Narrows canyons
  • Raging rapids

You’ll have a 2-hour layover in Silverton to explore, shop, and eat before hopping on the train to reverse the route back to Durango. It’s an all-day train adventure that’ll give you some of the best views of the San Juan Mountains from the not-so-cushy seats of a train.

Really, they’re not super-duper comfortable.

You can choose an open-air train car or an enclosed car—during the summer, I highly recommend the open-air option. You get much better views of the surrounding scenery, and there’s a bit more room for kids to walk around and explore.

Other Durango and Silverton Train Rides

Now, that’s just the  traditional  Durango and Silverton train ride experience, but the railroad has a few other options to explore:

  • Cascade Canyon Express:  Condense your journey to just 5 hours (instead of 9+) while still seeing jaw-dropping scenery, geological features, and epic high mountain curves.
  • Cascade Canyon Winter Train:  Take a trip to Cascade Canyon and back in the middle of winter for an unforgettable snow-bound train experience.
  • The Polar Express:  Listen to the story of the Polar Express while dancing chefs serve you hot chocolate. You’ll visit the North Pole, and Santa Claus even makes a surprise appearance on the train to give each child the “first gift of Christmas.”

Backpackers can also use the train in the summer to get prime access to the Chicago Basin hiking area. During warm summer months, entire cars will get off and on at this destination to go experience the remote Weminuche Wilderness and bag some of Colorado’s most epic 14’ers.

2. Georgetown Loop Railroad

Georgetown Loop Railroad

The  Georgetown Loop Railroad  is arguably the best train ride near Denver, Colorado. It’s less than an hour’s drive away from the Mile High City and just a skip off I-70 to park and embark.

You’ll hop on the train for a short 2-mile ride between the historic mining towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume. Right from the get-go, the train takes you over a scenic bridge with thrilling vertical drops on both sides. This is the pinnacle of exposure on a bridge, and they help freeze the moment in time by completely stopping in the middle to allow for pictures.

The train takes you over a handful of other bridges as it winds its way across the rocky canyon toward Silver Plume. Once you reach the end of your journey, you have the option to get off and explore some tourist attractions at Lebanon Silver Mine (you’ll pay for that  before  you get on the train). After the train gets sorted out, you’ll ride back to Georgetown to end your locomotive journey.

The Georgetown Loop Railroad is the perfect train ride for families because it’s not too long and not too short. You get just the right amount of time on the train without your kiddos getting bored or antsy—it’s a win-win for everyone.

3. Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Train Ride

Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Train Ride

The  Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Train Ride  takes passengers on a 45-minute trip to see the rich history of the area’s gold mines. You’ll get to ride the 15-ton iron horse steam locomotive and see amazing views of Pikes Peak, Echo Valley, and historic gold mining camps.

It’s a first-come, first-serve train ride, so you’ll need to get in line to earn yourself a spot. All the cars are open, and the train runs rain or shine—so prepare to get a little wet if the weather looks dicey.

The conductor narrates the entire journey, and these people are top-notch. They care about this area’s history, and they’ll share dozens of interesting facts you’ll  actually  want to hear.

4. Royal Gorge Route Railroad

Royal Gorge Route Railroad

Despite its breathtaking views, the Royal Gorge is still a  Colorado hidden gem  (relatively). Seriously, ask a Colorado local if they’ve been to the Royal Gorge, and you’d be surprised by how few have visited (and how few know about it).

The Royal Gorge Railroad  takes you through the winding gorge and gives you a unique bottom-up view of the tall cliffs, the winding Arkansas River, and the Royal Gorge Bridge (one of the world’s tallest suspension bridges).

Unlike most of the train rides on this list, the Royal Gorge Railroad feels a bit more ritzy. They offer first-class seating and dining, and the train also features themed rides like  Murder Mystery Dinner Train ,  Mother’s Day Train,  and  Royal Afternoon Tea at the Mansion .

5. Colorado Amtrak

Colorado Amtrak

The  California Zephyr train  passes through the heart of Colorado, making a stop in Denver as it makes its way between the end destinations of Chicago and Emeryville, San Francisco. You get a taste of everything the Western United States has to offer on this long train ride:

  • Snow-capped Sierra Nevadas
  • Desert terrain
  • Rocky Mountains
  • Glenwood Canyon
  • Winter Park
  • Moffat Tunnel
  • San Pablo Bay

The train serves over 30 train stations along the journey, but here are the notable stops in Colorado:

  • Fort Morgan, CO (FMG)
  • Denver, CO – Union Station (DEN)
  • Fraser-Winter Park, CO (WIP)
  • Granby, CO (GRA)
  • Glenwood Springs, CO (GSC)
  • Grand Junction, CO (GJT)

This is not a “historical” train ride. You’ll get cushy seats, sleeper cars, dining options, and observation cars for a comfortable traveling experience.

6. Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad

Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad

The  Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad  takes riders on a 65-mile journey through Toltec Gorge and over the 10,000-foot Cumbres Pass—hence, the name. It’s a 6.5-hour ride with amazing views the entire way, and the train itself is a National Historic Landmark.

The railroad describes itself as the “longest, the highest and most authentic steam railroad in North America.” You cross the state border with New Mexico 11 times as you zigzag through canyons, tunnels, and trestles. Right from the get-go, the train leaves the station and begins a steep 4% climb into the mountains.

You’ll see:

  • Old mining camps
  • 600-foot deep walls of Toltec Gorge
  • 137-foot-tall Cascade Creek Trestle
  • Chama Valley
  • Tanglefoot Curve
  • Rio de los Pinos

7. Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad

Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad

The  Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad  takes you on a 2.5-hour train ride to the Continental Divide with amazing panoramic views of the Arkansas River Valley and Leadville’s colorful mining past.

Along the way, you’ll see Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive (Colorado’s 2 tallest mountains), Freemont Pass, and the thick trees of the San Isabel National Forest. Depending on the time of year, you’ll also see fields of vibrant wildflowers surrounding the train as it meanders through the hills and mountains.

8. Tiny Town and Railroad

Tiny Town and Railroad

Tiny Town and Railroad  is far from a  traditional  scenic Colorado train ride experience, but it’s something your children might appreciate even more. They’ll feel like giants in this children-sized town filled with replica buildings and a miniature train built for them.

It’s a 10-minute train ride that takes you around the unique park, and it’s powered by a real steam engine. The park is actually a decent size, with tons of shade-providing trees and over 100 tiny buildings. Oh, and the train ride is just $2 per ticket. This place is  not  a tourist rip-off—it’s a genuinely good time for kids and train enthusiasts.

9. Rockies to the Red Rocks

Rockies to the Red Rocks

The  Rocky Mountaineer  train takes travelers for a colorful ride through western Colorado’s red rock territory. It stops in Denver, Glenwood Springs, and Moab, UT, as it winds through canyons and happens upon vast desert expanses.

Between Moab and Glenwood Springs, you’ll see incredible views of Mount Garfield and Ruby Canyon. Enjoy the springs for the rest of the evening before getting on the train for Day 2 between Glenwood Springs and Denver. This portion of the train ride crosses the Continental Divide with the 6.3-mile Moffat Tunnel.

10. The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway  is the highest cog train in the world, taking riders from Manitou Springs all the way up to the top of Pikes Peak (at 14,115 feet). It’s a 3.5-hour roundtrip ride with magical views of the Rocky Mountains and never-ending views of the plains to the east.

Discover Katharine Lee Bates’s inspiration for writing the song “America the Beautiful.” When she arrived on top of Pikes Peak, she wrote, “All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse.”

It’s hard to disagree.

While Pikes Peak is the star of the show, you’ll also get to experience dozens of other sights along your 9-mile trip to the top:

  • Ruxton Creek
  • Englemann Canyon
  • Minnehaha Falls

Want to mix up your adventure? Hike up Pikes Peak and save your knees with a quick trip down on the Cog Railway. Oh, and enjoy a high-altitude doughnut at the summit for top-notch fuel.

11. Ridgway Railroad Museum & Train Ride

Ridgway Railroad Museum & Train Ride

The  Ridgway Railroad Museum  features historic Colorado train equipment, and you can go out and view the cars at any time. However, you’ll need to wait until they’re open to look inside the cars and museum.

Come visit on a Saturday, and you can get a free ride on Motor No. 1 and Goose No. 4 as it rides around the few acres of property. You’ll get stellar views of the Cimarrons and Mt. Sneffels as you make loops around the train yard.

12. Winter Park Express Ski Train

Winter Park Express Ski Train

The  Winter Park Express Ski Train  operates in partnership with Amtrak to take ski enthusiasts from Downtown Denver to the high-altitude slopes of Winter Park Resort. You can ride the train from mid-January to the end of March during peak ski season to avoid I-70 traffic and enjoy the no-stress adventure of train rides and skiing.

You could even take plane to train by flying into Denver International Airport and taking the A-Line to Union Station in Downtown Denver. It’s an expensive route to get to Winter Park, but the nature of public traveling feels almost European (almost).

13. Southwest Chief

The  Southwest Chief  is another Amtrak line that connects Chicago and Los Angeles with a few stops in Colorado’s southwest region:

  • Lamar, CO (LMR)
  • La Junta, CO (LAJ)
  • Trinidad, CO (TRI)

These are seldom-visited Colorado towns with lots of natural beauty and adventure to offer. Visit Trinidad Lake for top-notch camping, hiking, boating, and fishing, or go on an epic hike up the Spanish Peaks.

14. [Bonus – Closed] Rio Grande Scenic Railroad

Rio Grande Scenic Railroad

The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad takes travelers on a beautiful route from Alamosa to La Veta in Southern Colorado. The steam and diesel trains provide amazing views of the San Luis Valley and a handful of crossings through historic train towns.

Unfortunately, the Rio Grand Scenic Railroad is closed for the time being as owners look for new buyers.

This historic train was built in 1884 and is an engineering marvel to this day. It continues to be a popular Colorado train ride thanks to the picturesque views from all angles.

Unlike the other train rides listed, the Georgetown Loop travels through green forests and across towering cliff sides.

It passes over four bridges, two loops, and travels through Clear Creek Valley.

Throughout the year there are several themed train rides, specifically during the fall and winter months .

Some of the most popular themed rides are the fall colors train tour and Santa’s Lighted Forest.

5. Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge

scenic train trips from denver

Cripple Creek is one of our favorite places to visit, especially this time of year. One of activities that’s always on our list is riding the Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad.

Compared to the other train rides on this list, this one is a shorter but still gorgeous ride through the Rocky Mountains.

This historic steam engine powered by coal leaves the station every 70 minutes from 10am to 5pm daily.

Board the historic 15-ton steam locomotive and sit in one of the open air cars. Take in the sights and enjoy the Colorado weather.

This 4-mile ride starts in Cripple Creek and continues for about 45 minutes, making several stops along the way.

It’s a great spot for photo opps so be sure to bring your camera.

Along the way, listen in as the train conductor shares stories of old mines, native townsfolk, and the history of the town.

Plus, when booking your ticket in advance online via the Cripple Creek & Railroad website , you can save $1.00 per rider up to 4 tickets in total.

6. Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad

Climb aboard the Leadville Colorado and Southern Railroad and get ready to see some stunning Colorado scenery.

This 2.5 hour train ride travels to the famous Continental Divide and meanders through the San Isabel National Forest.

Throughout the summer and fall months you can expect to see gorgeous colors thanks to brilliant wildflowers and autumn colors.

You’ll also travel through the Arkansas River Valley while seeing sights like Mount Elbert, the tallest mountain in Colorado.

Train tickets for the Leadville Railroad are only available from May through October. However, it’s become increasingly popular as the premier train ride for fall leaf-peeping.

There are also a variety of themed rides if you’re looking to spice things up from the traditional train ride.

7. Colorado Amtrak

southwest-chief-train-ride

In addition to the Colorado train rides listed here, Amtrak has multiple ways to get from one part of the state to the other.

Thanks to two main railways, Amtrak offers stops in Colorado in towns like:

  • Grand Junction
  • Glenwood Springs

The California Zephyr is a high-speed train ride from Chicago to San Francisco with six stops in Colorado. The most popular boarding location is at Denver’s historic Union Station.

The Southwest Chief also travels through Colorado, mainly focusing on the southwest region, including a few stops in New Mexico.

The train provides access to Colorado cities and historic sites like:

  • Bent’s Old Fort

The Southwest Chief Amtrak train ride starts in Chicago and travels to Los Angeles and back.

scenic train trips from denver

Next time you think about climbing a mountain, why not relax and let a train do all the work? Scenic railways up and down Colorado whisk travelers over craggy peaks, past sparkling rivers, and through golden aspen groves. From chugging steam trains to modern luxury carriages, these rail lines offer short jaunts and multiday adventures through the Rockies and beyond.

You never know what surprises you might find in the high-altitude wilderness, so keep an eye out for wildlife and pack a sweater in case the snow begins to fly.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Rail transport was essential to Colorado's early mining industry, and in 1882, this line connected the mines of Silverton with the smelters of Durango. Today's train rolls along that same 45-mile stretch of gorgeous scenery beside the Animas River, with vintage steam and diesel locomotives leading a variety of excursions throughout the year. Adventure packages — including zip lining, rafting, and Jeep tours — are available, along with special stops to access the Weminuche Wilderness and San Juan National Forest.

Royal Gorge Route Railroad

Built in 1880 and relaunched in 1998, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad travels between 1,000-foot rock walls while the Arkansas River rapids churn below. At its narrowest, Royal Gorge pinches down to 30 feet, so a suspended iron railway bridge hugs the north wall. The train runs all year, with historic locomotives and passenger carriages offering a range of 22-mile round-trip excursions from Cañon City's Santa Fe Depot. On board, the 403 Grill serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner made from Colorado-sourced ingredients.

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad

This historic rail line was established in 1880 to serve silver mines in the San Juan Mountains, and it follows a jagged route that crosses the Colorado-New Mexico border 11 times. Pulled by a steam locomotive, the train runs 64-mile excursions between Antonito, Colorado, and Chama, New Mexico, climbing over 10,015-foot Cumbres Pass, through Toltec Gorge, and along the 137-foot-high Cascade Trestle. Express, half-day, and full-day trips (with lunch) are available, as are special Fourth of July, wildflower, geology, brunch, and dinner trains.

Leadville Railroad

Perched at 10,152 feet above sea level, Leadville is a former mining boom town in a spectacular natural setting. Passengers (and their well-behaved dogs) can board the Leadville Railroad for a 2.5-hour round-trip journey on a rail line dating to 1884. The train chugs toward the Continental Divide, through the San Isabel National Forest and Arkansas River Valley, offering views of Mount Massive and Mount Elbert, Colorado's two tallest mountains, along the way. Wildflower and fall foliage trains are dazzling, and other excursions include barbecue, zip line, and rafting packages.

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

Fresh from a three-year, $100 million renovation, the world's highest cog railroad (and the country's highest railroad) welcomes travelers on a nine-mile climb from Manitou Springs to the top of Pikes Peak. The cog railway has been running since 1891, and the scenery is still awe-inspiring. Keep an eye out for bighorn sheep, elk, and yellow-bellied marmots on your way to the new, LEED Silver-certified Summit Visitor Center, situated at 14,115 feet above sea level. This is the place to taste Pikes Peak's famously fluffy high-altitude donuts.

Georgetown Loop Railroad

Completed in 1884 and rebuilt in time for its 1984 centenary, the Georgetown Loop Railroad takes travelers on a 4.5-mile round-trip ride between the historic mountain towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume. Pulled by vintage steam and diesel electric locomotives, the trains rumble over four bridges, around hairpin turns, and through the forest, with Clear Creek splashing below. Excursions can also be combined with a tour of the Lebanon Silver Mine, where you can try your luck at gold panning.

Rocky Mountaineer

Named the World's Leading Luxury Train at the 2021 World Travel Awards, the Rocky Mountaineer built its stellar reputation in Canada. Now, it's come stateside, with a two-day Rockies to the Red Rocks itinerary linking Denver and Moab, including an overnight stop in Glenwood Springs. The train's glass-dome coaches offer a smooth ride — through the Moffat Tunnel, past Winter Park's ski lifts, and along the banks of the Colorado River as it flows through ranchland, wine country, and into the red canyon wilderness.

Denver Railroads

Colorado has one of the most colorful railroad histories in the world. Following the discovery of gold and silver in the Rockies, railroad lines were pushed up nearly every canyon and high pass, making them the lifeline of every mining camp and community in the state.

It was the railroads that changed Denver from a wild frontier town to a large, urban city -- the most elegant and sophisticated metropolis between Chicago and Los Angeles. The colorful history of railroading through the Rockies has inspired railroad buffs for many years, making Denver one of the major destinations in the world for rail fans. But even railroad novices will enjoy some of the model railroads and railroad museums to be found in the area.

COLORADO RAILROAD MUSEUM

Established in 1958, this museum has the largest collection of historic records, mementos, artifacts, photos and stock of Colorado railroads. At one point, more than 2,000 miles of narrow-gauge track probed the mountains of Colorado, and the exciting era comes to life at the  Colorado Railroad Museum .

The Museum is housed in a replica of an 1880-style masonry depot, filled with 50,000 rare old photographs and artifacts. Outside on 12 acres of sprawling grounds are more than 50 narrow- and standard-gauge locomotives, cars and other rolling stock. The museum has its own spur, allowing it to have "steam ups" throughout the year. In the basement of the museum is one of Colorado's largest HO model railroad exhibits, representing more than 20 years work in an area 45 feet by 20 feet, much of it recreating a cross-section of the state's most interesting railroads such as those at Cripple Creek, Telluride and Tennessee Pass. There are also many special events throughout the year, including Steam Ups With Thomas, visits from Santa and much more. It's a great, family-friendly attraction. Locomotives and cars come from such famous Colorado railroads as the Colorado Midland; the South Park, the Florence & Cripple Creek; the Denver Boulder & Western; and the Manitou & Pikes Peak.

The Rio Grande Southern 1931 Galloping Goose No. 2; a meticulously restored Rio Grande 1881 Baldwin 2-8-0 engine; a huge Burlington CB&Q 4-8-4 locomotive; and the "Navajo," a 1937 steel observation car once used on the Santa Fe Super Chief. The museum also has the Railroad Book Store with more than 1,000 titles as well as an assortment of railroad gifts, tapes, magazines and memorabilia.

DENVER TROLLEY

The  Denver Trolley  is a replica of an open-air "Seeing Denver" streetcar operated by the Denver Tramway Company in the pre-World War I era. The trolley follows a scenic route along the South Platte River, beginning near the REI building at  Confluence Park.  It   then goes by the  Downtown Aquarium ,  Children's Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus,   Empower Field at Mile High  and other attractions.

GEORGETOWN LOOP RAILROAD

The  Georgetown Loop Railroad    is a reconstruction of one of Colorado's most famous railroads. The original railroad reached  Georgetown  in 1877 and builders intended to continue it to the rich mining town of  Leadville . That line was never completed, but it was decided to push the railroad up the valley another two miles to the neighboring mining camp of  Silver Plume . The problem was that Silver Plume was 600 feet higher in elevation. To gain that much altitude that fast, the railroad had to twist and turn four and a half miles, making two and a half complete circles and at one point crossing over itself on a 90-foot-high trestle -- the Devil's Gate Bridge. With the collapse of the mining industry and the coming of the automobile, the railroad was closed and in 1939 the bridge and rails were torn up for scrap metal. For 35 years the grade lay undisturbed, but then the Colorado Historical Society began to buy the land to reconstruct and operate the railroad. Steam returned to the valley in 1975, and in 1984 the Devil's Gate Bridge was reopened. Today, steam-powered locomotives make the climb up the valley through the end of September. The train may be boarded in Georgetown or Silver Plume and offers panoramic views, particularly when crossing the bridge. From the open-air viewing cars it is possible to see bighorn sheep and other wildlife, and the sound of the train whistle echoing down the valley is unforgettable.

ROCKY MOUNTAINEER

Get a feel for the rails while seeing some spectacular scenery that only a train ride can provide by traveling from Denver to Glenwood Springs, Colorado, to Moab, Utah, on the  Rocky Mountaineer   . You'll go through Ruby Canyon, see Mount Logan and cross the Continental Divide and see deserts, arches and hoodoos. The spacious glass-domed train coaches let you take it all in.

Tiny Town  began in 1915 at the site of an old stagecoach stop just outside of Denver when George Turner began erecting one-sixth sized buildings for his young daughter. In 1920, the town was open to the public and in just five years it became one of Colorado's top five attractions. By 1939, a miniature railway was added, but a flood, a fire and changing economic conditions forced the attraction to close. In 1988, volunteers began the resurrection of Tiny Town. Today, more than 100 colorful buildings are in place, all beautifully hand-crafted with wonderful details, many with full interiors. Some of the buildings are exact replicas of famous structures from Colorado's history, but all fit the character of a Colorado village at the turn of the century. The one-sixth size village is circled by the miniature tiny town railway, a mile-long run with open-air cars pulled by an authentic steam locomotive similar to the narrow-gauge locomotives that once worked the mountain lines of Colorado. The train crosses a trestle over a small stream, and curls through tall pine trees in its lovely mountain location, affording excellent views of the 100 buildings of the village.

FORNEY MUSEUM OF TRANSPORTATION

The  Forney Museum of Transportation    is a one-of-a-kind collection of more than 500 exhibits relating to historical transportation. It began with antique cars, but soon expanded to include vehicles of all kinds. Some of these are familiar, while others spark the imagination. Highlights include the Big Boy, the world's largest steam locomotive, and a selection of Forney Locomotives, as well as rail cars and private cars.

HUDSON GARDENS

Constructed in the spring of 2000,  Hudson Gardens & Event Center's    Garden Railroad features more than 700 feet of "G" gauge railroad brass track, trestles, bridges, waterfalls, and a variety of plantings matching the scale of the miniature trains. Higher and lower loops allow two trains to run simultaneously--a diesel engine and a steam engine. And a third rail even runs a trolley on a short line. More than 40 tons of rock were used to create this condensed Colorado landscape. A great diversity of plants, from dwarf conifer to rock garden miniatures "create" the garden. The water is recycled to the lower pond and up over the two waterfalls. The Railroad Garden is a popular attraction for Garden Railroad enthusiasts of all ages! The railroad runs May through the first weekend in October.

OTHER RAILROADS IN COLORADO

Royal gorge route.

Considered by many to be the most spectacular stretch of rail in America, the  Royal Gorge Route    offers the best experience of the Royal Gorge on a breathtaking, two- or three-hour scenic and historic train ride on the most famous portion of the former Denver & Rio Grande Western train line. The tracks cling to a narrow ledge while the canyon walls rise 2,000 feet straight above. A highlight is the world-famous "Hanging Bridge." The train features one of Colorado's finest gourmet lunch and dinner train experiences throughout the year, as well as many special events, including Mother's Day Brunch, Oktoberfest and Santa Express Train.

CRIPPLE CREEK & VICTOR NARROW GAUGE RAILROAD

Take a ride on the  Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad   , a four-mile round trip through one of the most historic goldfields in Colorado on authentic steam locomotives. Cripple Creek legalized casino gambling in October 1991, and now offers over 20 casinos with slot machines, poker and blackjack. The train runs daily from Memorial Day Weekend through October.

DURANGO & SILVERTON NARROW GAUGE RAILROAD

The   Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad   - an American legend. The daily 90-mile round trip train excursion from Durango to Silverton allows you to travel through the San Juan mountains of Southwestern Colorado, going into areas accessible only by train. Coaches, open gondolas, parlor car, fired steam-operated narrow-gauge locomotives. Five trains operate during the peak of season. Open from early May to late October.

CUMBRES & TOLTEC SCENIC RAILROAD

500 S. Terrace Ave, Chama, NM The  Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad  is America's longest (64 miles each way) and highest (10,015 feet) narrow- gauge steam railroad. Starting in Antonito, Colorado, the line angles southwest through rolling high country, then begins a steady climb through the forested slopes of the San Juan range, passing through groves of pine and at 10,015 feet in spectacular Toltec Gorge of the Los Pinos River. The line then begins a precipitous 4-percent grade drop into Chama, New Mexico.

COLORADO & SOUTHERN R.R. CO

326 E. 7th St., Leadville Leadville, the highest incorporated city in the nation, is the departure point for the Leadville, Colorado and Southern Railroad . The train leaves from Leadville's century-old depot and travels over the old Colorado & Southern high line, following the headwaters of the Arkansas River up to a spectacular view of Fremont Pass. Then it's down to French Gulch water tower where the train stops to view Mt. Elbert, Colorado's highest peak.

The Empire Builder

5.  The Empire Builder

Chicago, il to portland, or.

Trip length: 45–46 hours

There is only one word to describe this journey: epic. The Empire Builder runs daily between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest, mirroring much of Lewis and Clark’s original expedition. It passes through a greatest-hits list of must-see sites, from the urban (St. Cloud and Minneapolis) to the great outdoors (big-sky country and Glacier National Park ). The trip totals 46 hours, which warrants booking at least a roomette with seats that convert to beds so you can fully stretch out once you’ve gotten your fill of landscapes under the moonlight.

The Alaska Denali Star

6.  The Alaska Denali Star

Anchorage, ak to fairbanks, ak.

Trip length: 12 hours

This 350-mile stretch through the heart of Alaska highlights the state's beautiful, rugged wilderness. Between the birch forests, rushing rivers, caribou- and bear-spotting, views of Mt. McKinley and a stint through Denali National Park, there’s a reason this is the Alaska Railroad ’s flagship sojourn. If you can swing it, splurge on a GoldStar upgrade and take in the spectacular scenery from an open-air viewing car, with absolutely nothing between you and the wild.

Skunk Train

7.  Skunk Train

Willits, ca.

Trip length: 2 hours

Hopping aboard  Skunk Train  is like traveling back in time—this historic train has been traversing Mendocino County in California since 1885. Today, you can choose from a variety of routes and experiences. The most popular journey is Wolf Tree Turn. This 16-mile route will take you through old-growth redwood groves within Noyo River Canyon, over trestle bridges, and under tunnels, ending with a stop in Crowley, where you can take in the majesty of one of the oldest trees in the area, the Wolf Tree. Enjoy snacks and beverages (including alcoholic ones) before heading back toward Willits.

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

8.  The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

Bryson city, nc.

Trip length: 3.5 hours

It may be pint-size, but Bryson City, the departure point for this rail-riding adventure, is rich with local gems like barbecue joints, a soda fountain and a brewery. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has various routes, but the four-and-a-half-hour Nantahala Gorge excursion is a scenery-serving star, snaking along the forested Nantahala River and crossing the Fontana Lake by bridge. Foliage lovers, take note: The leaves here are breathtaking during the fall.

The Mount Washington Cog Railway

9.  The Mount Washington Cog Railway

Bretton woods, nh.

Trip length: 3 hours

Like the Little Engine That Could, this antique train chugs daily up Mount Washington , depositing its passengers at the 6,288-foot peak, the highest in the Northeast. A working museum of sorts (the track dates to 1852), the Cog has the elevated feel of a gondola, only you’re in a sturdy little train. At the top, take in the sweeping views of Canada and the Atlantic on a clear day.

The Napa Valley Wine Train

10.  The Napa Valley Wine Train

Napa valley, ca.

Trip length: 3 to 6 hours on average

On this California Wine Country track, you can get intoxicated by the scenery alone: picture-perfect wineries and hills carpeted in lush rows of vines. But you’ll have a little help, what with all the vino you’ll be sipping alongside your onboard multicourse meal—both lunch and dinner are options. The roving restaurant aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train comprises a collection of vintage Pullman railcars complete with mahogany panels and brass hardware. So go ahead and soak it all up—you’re not behind the wheel, after all.

California Zephyr

11.  California Zephyr

Emeryville, ca to reno, nv.

Trip length: 6 hours 45 minutes

At more than 2,400 miles long, the  California Zephyr —stretching from San Francisco to Chicago—is Amtrak's longest route. While we don't recommend you do the route in its entirety (unless that floats your boat), we highly recommend the route stretching from the Bay Area (hop on in San Francisco or Emeryville) to the Lake Tahoe area (get off in Reno or Truckee). This scenic journey is an ideal way to get to Tahoe, beat the traffic, and take in dreamy views.

The Hawaiian Railway Society

12.  The Hawaiian Railway Society

Trip length: 1.5 hours

Train travel takes a turn for the tropical on this 90-minute jaunt across Oahu in an old sugar-cane hauler traveling at the lickety-split speed of 15 miles an hour. The ride aboard the Hawaiian Railway Society shows you a rarely-seen version of Hawaii, filled with old sisal plantations and ghost towns. Time your trip for the second Sunday of the month and you can book a seat in the elegant 1900 parlor car that was the personal ride of Oahu Railway & Land Co. founder Mr. Dillingham. It's worth noting, however, that reservations are now required to ride the train.

Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

13.  Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

Durango, co to silverton, co.

Trip length: 3.5 hours

One of the most scenic ways to experience one of the most scenic states; a ride on the Narrow Gauge Railroad isn’t merely photo fodder, but a full immersion into the wild, wild west. The train has been rolling between Durango and Silverton since 1882, when it was tasked with transporting silver and gold out of the San Juan Mountains. The 45.4-mile route runs in both directions along the Animas River, crisscrossing it five times, and passing by old stagecoach trails and long-deserted mining camps as it winds between 14,000ft high peaks.

The Ethan Allen Express

14.  The Ethan Allen Express

New york city, ny to burlington, vt.

Trip length: 7 hours 35 minutes

While the destination is a major draw, getting there is half the fun on this five-and-a-half-hour journey from New York City to Vermont. On the Ethan Allen Express , you’ll cruise through the postcard-perfect towns of New York’s Hudson Valley; hit Saratoga Springs, as famous for its horse races as its hot springs and snake around Vermont’s fittingly named Green Mountains, before landing in charming little-big city Rutland, with its historic downtown and one helluva farmers' market.

As of February, 65% of the Centennial State’s historic and scenic byways are “electrified.”

The Colorado Department of Transportation’s Scenic & Historic Byway Commission announced that 17 of Colorado’s 26 byways have electric charging stations within 100 miles. This effort is part of the Colorado Greenhouse Gas Pollution Reduction Roadmap that was designed to help the state meet emissions numbers by making electric vehicles more practical and appealing.

It makes sense to be out and about appreciating nature while also protecting it from harmful fumes and pollution, and these charging stations are part of an eco-friendly initiative for tourists.

A Colorado Electric Byway must either have a dual-port DC fast charging station at least every 100 miles within the start and end of the byway or if the byway is under 100 miles long, the station needs to be available within 15 miles of the start or end of the byway. A Colorado Electric Byway must either have a dual-port DC fast charging station at least every 100 miles within the start and end of the byway or if the byway is under 100 miles long, the station needs to be available within 15 miles of the start or end of the byway.

In addition, nearby communities are being encouraged to install these charging stations at established places frequented by travelers, such as hotels, restaurants, and even trailheads.

The three newest Colorado Electric Byways are:

The Peak to Peak Highway between Estes Park and Black Hawk. This drive can take about three hours over 55 miles on Highway 7 to Highway 72 and then Highway 119. This mountain drive offers views galore including the peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park and Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. Along the way, travelers can stop in charming towns with distinct character, including Estes Park, Nederland, Allenspark, Ward, and Black Hawk.

The Mount Blue Sky Road , which despite a recent name change, is still billed as the highest paved road in North America where it tops out at 14,130 feet above sea level. This road is subject to seasonal closures and there are reservations required in summer to minimize impact (go to recreation.gov for fees and details). Along the way, you can visit Mount Goliath Natural Area, a high alpine garden managed by Denver Botanic Gardens. The byway is 28 miles long and very curvy as you ascend over 7,000 feet in elevation, so plan for at least one hour to go one way.

The Gold Belt Tour Byway is also a National Scenic Byway that takes road trippers through 131 miles of former mining camps and towns. Along the way, the road cuts through Cripple Creek, Victor, Florence, and other spots, as well as gives some stunning views of Pikes Peak, Royal Gorge, and Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. Check road conditions ahead of time as some stretches will require a 4 x 4 vehicle to safely pass.

The remaining nine byways will also be “electrified” in the coming years.
