Vietnam - Essential guide

See the sights in Ho Chi Minh City

A rapidly developing city, the former Saigon has stayed true to its heritage. The symbol of Vietnam’s independence, it is home to the Reunification Palace . Images of this former presidential palace were shared around the world when a North Vietnamese army tank crashed through its gates on 30 April 1975, ending the conflict. The neoclassical Notre-Dame Cathedral and the colonial Central Post Office are a testament to the city's Western past. Designed in a more typical Vietnamese style, the bustling Jade Emperor Pagoda and the colourful Binh Tay Market are also well worth a visit.

Immerse yourself in the culture of Hanoi

Immerse yourself in the culture of Hanoi

Hanoi is one of the jewels in the Vietnamese crown, scattered with remnants of the French colonial era, traditional monuments, dazzling lakes and historic landmarks. Built 1,500 years ago, the Tran Quoc Pagoda is the oldest in Vietnam. While in Hanoi, visitors should make a stop at the H o Chi Minh Mausoleum , explore the embassy-lined streets of the former French quarter , or check out the Vietnamese Women's Museum , which pays homage to their elegance through the ages. If you are looking for a pleasant walk, the narrow streets and stalls of the Old Quarter of Hanoi exude a timeless charm, while the Hoan Kiem Lake is a scenic spot in the middle of the city.

Set sail in Ha Long Bay

Set sail in Ha Long Bay

In the Gulf of Tonkin, Ha Long Bay is one of Vietnam's most iconic locations, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Its 1,600 islets and verdant limestone pillars rise high above the water, creating breathtaking seascapes. Sailing the 1,500 square kilometres of the bay is the best way to immerse yourself in the stunning scenery: emerald water, floating fishing villages, impressive caves and lush islands.

Recharge your batteries in Nha Trang

Recharge your batteries in Nha Trang

A seaside resort on the China Sea, Nha Trang offers the perfect blend of historic landmarks and beaches lined with coconut palms. When you are not lounging by the water, you can take the chance to explore the city on foot or by pedicab. The fishing boats in the port, the Long Son Pagoda, the Dam Market, the Cham towers of Po Nagar—a sacred Hindu site—all reflect the traditional side of Vietnam .

Go further afield to the temples of Angkor, Cambodia

Go further afield to the temples of Angkor, Cambodia

The temples of Angkor create a striking silhouette against the clear blue sky or the setting sun. Around a two-hour flight from Hanoi, the ruins emerge from the forest on the outskirts of Siem Reap city. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, the archaeological site embodies the grandeur of the former capital of the Khmer Empire , which lasted from the 9th to the 15th century. At its height, the city had 750,000 residents, and the Angkor Wat temple remains the largest religious complex in Southeast Asia to this day. One of the site's more unusual features, its sophisticated water management network is widely considered one of the wonders of Angkor .

Unique features

In Vietnam, bakers make bread very similar to the baguettes found in France. This tradition is a remnant of the French colonial era. Known as banh mi , or "wheat bread", it is actually made using a mixture of wheat flour and rice. The term banh mi can also refer to sandwiches containing Vietnamese sausage, meatballs or chicken, grated carrots, cucumber and coriander, which are served in these baguettes.

If Vietnamese cuisine had to be boiled down to a single dish, it would be pho (pronounced "fuh"). Locals enjoy this hearty and inexpensive soup at any time of the day. Each region has its own version with its own unique flavours, but the base is always the same: beef broth simmered with plenty of spices, such as cloves, ginger and cinnamon, served with rice noodles. One of the most common choices features beef, onions, bean sprouts, cilantro, Thai basil, lime and chilli.

In the spotlight

44 years after the end of the Vietnam War, Agent Orange , the powerful herbicide that was dropped on the country's forests, is still wreaking havoc. It has a detrimental effect on the human body, causing birth defects and cancers in many children. For many years, numerous groups have been calling for the US to recognise the damage caused by this defoliant. In 2019, the United States finally launched a clean-up campaign targeting the main sites where the chemicals were stored in the 1960s.

Books. 992. Raymond Depardon and Jean-Claude Guillebaud are on an adventure through Vietnam, like so many other tourists. This duo, however, has been here before. In Return to Vietnam , the photographer and the war correspondent retrace their steps from 20 years earlier. Their bittersweet journey lets them see the country in a whole new light, witnessing the aftermath of the war they left behind.

Music. Music is an integral part of Vietnamese culture, with five different types of traditional music appearing on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List: Hue court music, the gongs of Tay Nguyen, courtesan songs ( ca tru ), antiphonal songs ( quan ho ) and communal house entry songs ( hat xoan ).

Film. Where does the life of a little girl placed in an orphanage in Ireland in the 1950s intersect with the story of Vietnam's street children? That child from Dublin grew up to be an adult, but she was haunted by nightmares of a faraway country ravaged by war. She made the journey to Vietnam in 1989 and discovered the plight of thousands of children. For the past 30 years, the Christina Noble Children's Foundation has provided them with care and education and fought against extreme poverty in Vietnam and Mongolia. A film about her story was released in 2014. http://france.cncf.org/

Postal, Phones & Internet Service in Vietnam

Postal and courier service in Vietnam is widely available, fast, and trustworthy. The advice is to transfer postcards by the post office or ask your hotel’s staff to help instead of putting them into letterboxes. Vietnam is rapidly becoming a modern country with telephone connections both domestic and abroad are widely available. In case you want to keep in touch with the rest of the world, you have to pay an expensive price. Spending money on a Vietnamese SIM card is cheaper to call abroad. Before putting the SIM in your phone, make sure that you have already unlocked it. Internet access is widely available in most hotels over the country both in big cities and rural areas, while WiFi can easily be found in most cafes, restaurants, bars, and shopping malls in urban areas such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Transportation in Vietnam

The first impression about transportation of newcomers to Vietnam is extremely bad. Crossing through the road can be an impossible mission. With those who have pigeon hearts, they would love to spend their whole vacation in the hotel instead of walking out there and facing streams of bicycles, motorbikes, and cars going back and forth. However, after a bit of time to adapt, you can realize it is not too difficult to find a gap and join in the traffic jam. The advice is to follow the locals and the traffic lights, if it is turning red, make yourself ready. The unwritten rule of crossing is predicted when the most suitable time is, and with a bit of bravery, just walk through the road to the other side, people will flow around you like water flow through a rock.In case you want to discover attractions far from your place, you can book a taxi which can be easily found in most big cities. However, you should ask for the price before hopping on, and remember to watch the cash machine to make sure that they do not cheat. Many touristy cities such as Hanoi, Hoian, Da Nang, Nha Trang, etc. have the cyclo service for those who want to relax by slowly exploring every corner of the streets with a short scenic ride.

Int’l cruise ship brings nearly 2,200 tourists to Vietnam’s Con Dao

The Bahamian-flagged cruise vessel Resorts World One with nearly 2,200 passengers on board arrived in Con Dao, an island district off Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province in southern Vietnam, on Sunday.

After their arrival on the island, the cruise ship passengers visited plenty of destinations for eco and spiritual tourism including Con Dao Museum, the prison camps of Phu Truong and Phu Son, Con Dao Market, and Con Dao National Park.

The passengers also embarked on high-speed boat tours to Hon Bay Canh and Hon Cau, two islands in the Con Dao region, where they explored turtle nesting areas and mangrove forests, went diving to admire the stunning coral reefs, and enjoyed kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

The vessel is scheduled to leave for Malaysia’s Redang Island on Monday and return to Singapore on Tuesday.

Since this is the largest cruise ship by capacity to come the Vietnamese island after 25 years, Saigontourist Travel Service Company, a subsidiary of Vietnam’s leading tourism corporation Saigontourist Group, in coordination with the Con Dao administration and the management authority of the Con Dao National Park held a ceremony on Sunday to welcome the cruise ship, which is currently operated by Singapore-based cruise line Resorts World Cruises.

Nguyen Thanh Luu, general director of Saigontourist Travel Service Company, stated that the company has served international visitors aboard the Resorts World One cruise ship at least once a month this year.

The vessel has visited popular Vietnamese destinations including Ho Chi Minh City, Hue City in Thua Thien-Hue Province, Nha Trang City in Khanh Hoa Province, Da Nang City in the central region, and Ha Long City in Quang Ninh Province.

Michael Goh, president at Resorts World Cruises, said that the cruise line opted for Con Dao as a new destination of the ship’s voyage in order to offer its guests a chance to explore more pristine places.

“Vietnam is absolutely one of the top destinations that tourists should not miss out on in Southeast Asia," Goh remarked.

“Your country boasts a wide range of cultural heritage sites, tasty local dishes, natural stunning places, and countless exciting activities to try.”

The president of Resorts World Cruises added that many Vietnamese cities are easily accessed by cruise ships, making them popular destinations for cruise lines.

The Resorts World One vessel has a gross tonnage of 75,338 metric tons, measuring 268 meters in length and 32 meters in width.

The 13-story vessel is capable of carrying a maximum of over 2,200 guests and has 928 bedrooms, 17 restaurants offering a vast array of dishes, as well as various recreational, sports, wellness, cultural services to cater to visitors of all ages.
