Mega cruise line company Royal Caribbean has some of the largest cruise ships in the industry — in fact, the new Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas is the largest in the world. Royal Caribbean offers a wealth of onboard amenities, and its most popular ships have a loyal following of customers who sail the line to all seven continents.

The company dates back to 1968 when it belonged to Norwegian shipowners who wanted to be a part of the growing cruise market. It is now part of the Royal Caribbean Group, which has several cruise lines under its banner. These include Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises.

Whether you’re after Royal Caribbean’s newest ship or some of the company’s popular Caribbean or Mediterranean itineraries, here is a guide to its ships, destinations, offerings and loyalty program.

Royal Caribbean has an itinerary for every interest. You’ll find the company’s ships most often sailing around the Caribbean and to Mexico. It also operates ships that sail through the majestic scenery of Alaska, along the Mediterranean coastline, in the Baltic and in the South Pacific. Here’s what you can expect on its ships:

Cabin types: The interior cabins are the most affordable, and some of them have an extra-special feature: a virtual window. These screens show scenery from outside of the ship simulating what you might see from a sea-facing cabin. On certain ships, there are cabins that look toward the interior promenade or to the back of the ship facing the AquaTheater. Also available are sea-facing cabins, balcony cabins and large suites. Some of the most expansive have in-suite slides, cinemas and wraparound balconies.

Main U.S. routes: From the U.S., you can easily sail on its Alaska, Bermuda, Canada, New England, Caribbean, Mexico and Panama Canal itineraries, among others.

Loyalty program: The Crown & Anchor Society is the line’s loyalty program, which provides accumulating benefits the more you sail with Royal Caribbean. Its elite status tiers are based on points, which you earn based on the number of nights you spend on board. Suite reservations earn double points.

The Royal Caribbean route map covers every continent, departing from both the West and East U.S. coasts as well as nearly 300 global ports.

Antarctica.

Middle East.

New Zealand.

Pacific Islands.

Panama Canal.

South America.

Some cruises are as short as two nights for a quick weekend getaway while others can last several weeks. There’s even a world cruise that takes 274 days.

There are plenty of great deals out there, including three-night cruises to the Bahamas for as low as $252 per person. Or you can splurge and circumnavigate South America and visit Antarctica for $3,118 per person. If you go during one of Royal Caribbean's Kids Sail Free promotions, children staying in a room with at least two adults get to cruise for free (restrictions apply). This special promotion takes place several times a year.

It's impossible to say definitively which Royal Caribbean ship is the best, since opinions vary from one person to another. But there are some ships you might enjoy more than others based on the type of experience you're looking for. If you're traveling with kids, you may like its newest ships like Icon of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas for their numerous swimming pools and water parks. Couples may prefer the adults-only areas on certain ships. Icon of the Seas, for example, has an area called Cloud 17, which has its own pool and bar.

The cruise line has more than two dozen ships in its fleet, which includes the largest passenger ship in the world: Icon of the Seas, carrying 7,600 passengers at full capacity.

» Learn more: Icon of the Seas: Floating bliss or horror at sea?

The newest Royal Caribbean ship — Icon of the Seas — will set sail in 2024 with more than 20 restaurants and bars plus a water park, numerous pools, and family-friendly attractions designed in different "neighborhoods." This will be the largest passenger ship in the world, which is not a novelty for the cruise line. In fact, Royal Caribbean is responsible for introducing many of the world’s largest ships to the market. It keeps topping itself with each new ship.

Royal Caribbean cruises are not all-inclusive, and cruise companies (including Royal Caribbean) make money by selling ancillary services on board. These add-ons include things like beverage packages, specialty restaurant reservations and shore excursions. But there are plenty of perks that come with the cruise fare, and passengers can have lots of fun without spending any additional money. This is what's included in the overall cruise price:

Accommodations in your selected category.

Meals and snacks in the buffet restaurants, main dining rooms and by the pool.

Non-bottled water, juice, iced tea, hot chocolate, and some coffees and teas.

Fitness center access.

Shows and entertainment.

Pools and some water park activities like the popular FlowRider surf simulator.

Activities like rock climbing and bumper cars on many ships.

You will have to pay extra to enjoy the specialty restaurants, Wi-Fi, shore excursions, upgraded drink selections, spa services and many of the onboard activities.

Royal Caribbean has brought many special features to sea, and its passengers have come to recognize the brand for these attractions, including:

The FlowRider surf simulator.

The first rock climbing wall at sea.

The first ice skating rink at sea.

The Royal Promenade, a boulevard of shops, restaurants and bars.

The AquaTheater, featuring water shows in the deepest pool at sea.

The cruise line’s loyalty program is called the Crown & Anchor Society, and it comes with benefits that grow the more you sail. You earn one point for every night you sail on Royal Caribbean and double points when paying for a suite. The more points you accrue, the more benefits you earn.

The perks include:

Stateroom upgrades (as few as 5,000 points on 3-4 day sailings; 15,000 points on 4-8 night sailings).

Why Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and other cruise prices are higher

I f you visit some of the more popular cruise-line pages on Facebook, you will see a fair amount of people complaining about rising prices.

In many cases, people complain that they can no longer afford to sail on the cruise lines they have been loyal to, and they threaten to take their business elsewhere.

The posts also accuse the cruise lines of being greedy or of trying to make back the money they lost during the pandemic. Some posters also accuse the cruise lines of not being respectful or loyal to the long-term customers who helped them become successful in the first place.

Related: Carnival Cruise Line has a new gift for passengers

As people complain about higher prices, which are indeed real, they also blame the cost of the new megaships both Royal Caribbean ( RCL ) and Carnival Cruise Line have built in the past few years.

In reality, price increases are a lot simpler than the conspiracy theories posited online: Cruise-line prices, whether it's for your cabin, drink packages, excursions or other extras, are based on demand.

Prices at Royal Caribbean and Carnival, as well as MSC Cruises, which has recently been much cheaper than its rivals, have been driven up by increased demand. All three cruise lines have increased their capacity out of Florida, their top market by far, and ships still have generally been sailing full.

How demand-based pricing works

When a cruise line puts a sailing on sale, it sets prices based on both history and current demand. Since sailings generally go on sale more than a year in advance, pricing requires a bit of guesswork. (No cruise line shares its full formula for how it sets initial pricing.)

Demand is dynamic and if cabins are selling quickly, prices will go up. Fully selling out a cruise ship generally takes 12 months, so when a higher percentage of cabins sell quickly, prices rise. If demand is softer, prices do go down.

When a cruise ship hits 100% capacity — which does not mean all its cabins are sold because some may have more than two guests — any remaining rooms will generally be expensive.

Cruise lines don't arbitrarily raise prices to recover past losses. Instead, they generally get as much as they can for each room based on current demand. That's why a new ship people really want to sail on, like Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, has much higher prices than Wonder of the Seas, the cruise line's second-newest ship.

This pricing plan extends to excursions and other items that have limited supply. You could argue that Royal Caribbean and Carnival leave money on the table in areas where they offer set pricing.

In the case of Carnival, that includes its Cheers beverage package, which has a set price as well as individual specialty meals. Royal Caribbean uses dynamic pricing for its drink and unlimited dining packages but has set prices for individual meals in its specialty restaurants.

How to save money on a cruise

While you can find lower prices yourself, it's generally best to work with a travel agent when booking your cruise. Larger agencies, or agents who work as part of a bigger group, often book blocks of rooms well in advance in order to lock in lower prices.

A good travel agent will also track prices, and if the cruise line lowers the price before final payment is due, they will get you either a price adjustment or onboard credit. In addition, your travel agent can match you to the right cruise for your budget.

It generally costs less to sail on older ships, and some cruise lines, including MSC, still have some sailings at comparatively low prices. Cruises do generally cost more than they did in 2019, but that's not universal.

In a broad sense, booking early or booking late saves you the most money. Last-minute deals have become rare, but they do happen, especially with Royal Caribbean and Carnival having so many ships sailing in the Caribbean.

Want the latest cruise news and deals? Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter.

It's harder to find a cheap sailing than it has been in years, but it's not impossible. If your goal is getting on a ship at the lowest possible price, you will have options. If you want the newest ships or specific port stops, or you have limited sailing dates, your price options will be more limited.

Royal Caribbean Lifts Profit View Again on Cruise Boom, Higher Prices

(Reuters) -Royal Caribbean Group on Thursday raised its annual profit forecast for a second time, after record bookings during the first quarter and higher ticket pricing boosted its results, sending its shares 4% higher premarket.

Soaring demand for vacations at sea has given cruise operators ample room to raise ticket prices as the industry looks to close the pricing gap between more expensive land-based holidays and give their profits a lift.

Royal Caribbean also beat expectations for quarterly profit and revenue, with half of its yield growth coming from higher ticket pricing.

"Our existing fleet along with our new ships continue to perform exceptionally well, highlighted by the market response to the launch of Icon of the Seas," said CEO Jason Liberty.

The company now expects annual adjusted profit between $10.70 and $10.90 per share, compared with its earlier forecast of $9.90 to $10.10.

The Celebrity Cruises operator carried 2.05 million passengers in the quarter, nearly 14% higher year-over-year. It also reported record demand during the "wave season" - a period marked by special cruise deals and discounts for the year.

That helped its quarterly revenue of $3.73 billion surpass expectations of $3.69 billion, according to LSEG data.

Higher ticket prices have helped shield the company from slightly steeper net cruise costs expected this year due to increased dry dock days, as well as an impact from canceled voyages to the Red Sea amid tensions in the region.

The company expects net cruise costs excluding fuel to increase about 5.5% for the year, up from its earlier forecast for a rise between 3.75% to 4.25%.

Royal Caribbean's adjusted earnings per share of $1.77 beat market expectations of $1.33.

"I remember owning the stock in 2022 and every client was giving me grief about it," said Peter Ahluwalia, manager at Belinvest Global Equity Fund that holds Royal Caribbean stocks and chief investment officer at Swiss Partners Group. "We're turning almost 45% return on equity at the moment, which is quite incredible."

Shares of the company have risen 126% to about $137 in the past year.
