Pool Safety

Carnival Cruise Line is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for all of our guests in all aspects of their cruise experience. This includes pool safety, which we have always taken very seriously. Vigilance and awareness is clearly proven to be the best means for ensuring safety when using water facilities such as pools and waterparks and everyone, including parents and employees, share in that responsibility.  To that end, we have made and will continue to make significant investments in training our employees through highly respected water safety training organizations on water safety, CPR and first aid as well as being prepared to initiate proactive intervention if necessary.

To offer an additional layer of safety, all ships in the Carnival fleet provide complimentary swim life vests for use in ship pools. Life vests for children of various sizes are available and on display near the main midship pool. We also have adult sizes up to XL-size (extra large/chest size 43-46 inches). Guests can take them and replace them during the day, as they wish. Life vests cannot be worn in WaterWorks or on the slides and cannot be taken ashore.

Do you provide a formal lifeguard program? We’ve put a lot of thought into our safety programs. We have made and will continue to make significant investments in training our employees through highly respected water safety training organizations on water safety, CPR and first aid as well as being prepared to initiate proactive intervention if necessary. What sort of training do people receive? Employees participating in water safety training are required to complete curriculum in water safety, CPR and first aid. Is lifesaving equipment available at your pools? Standard aquatic safety equipment is located at each pool.

What are the depths of the pools? Depths vary by ship. For your cruise ship, click  here . What are your standard pool rules? Pools are generally open 8:00am to midnight;  hours may vary and are listed in Carnival's HUB App.

The following Pool Rules signage is posted at all pools, fleet wide:

  • No Lifeguard on Duty
  • Parents are responsible for their children
  • No children in diapers or who are not toilet-trained
  • Use pool at your own risk
  • Showers are required prior to use
  • Watch your step on wet surfaces
  • Use ladder and handrails to ender and exit the pool
  • Do not use if you are experiencing diarrhea, vomiting or fever
  • No running, horseplay, jumping or diving
  • No glass containers, eating or smoking
  • Take children on frequent bathroom breaks

Health and Safety – Frequently Asked Questions

Do Disney Cruise Line ships supply flotation vests for use in the pools?

As a courtesy, complimentary flotation vests are available on the pool decks aboard all Disney ships. These vests can only be worn by children in the swimming pools to help with flotation and must not be taken ashore at ports of call , including Castaway Cay .

Flotation vests are available for children and adults on Castaway Cay.

Please note that flotation vests are not a substitute for the life jackets located in Guest staterooms, nor are they a substitute for adult supervision.

Are There Enough Life Jackets on a Cruise Ship?

19th February 2018 By David at HowToCruise 4 Comments

Life jacket on a cruise

Are There Sufficient Life Jackets on a Cruise Ship?

In a word…

Actually, it’s a great question – because if you haven’t been on a cruise before, you’ll probably want a lot of reassurance about safety.

After all, I bet you watched the Titanic film, didn’t you?

I bet you watched Titanic!

How Many Life Jackets Are There on a Cruise Ship?

In the 21st-century world of cruising, a ll cruise ships need to carry enough safety equipment to support all their guests.

And to support the crew, too (hey – can’t forget the crew!).

Here’s how it works on a typical cruise ship:

Each cabin contains the exact number of life jackets for all its occupants.

Hey! So no stowaways in your cabin, please, ‘cos there won’t be enough life jackets for you all.

The life jackets are easily accessible inside the cruise cabin

But What if I Can’t Get to my Cabin to Collect my Life Jacket?

Great question!

They’ve already thought of that.

They put additional life jackets near the muster station.

Are there enough life jackets on a cruise?

From reading some cruise forums, it appears that some cruise companies choose to place  all their life jackets at the muster stations rather than inside the cabins.

But that seems to be a very small number of cruise ships.

And you’ll certainly find out  where the life jackets are situated during the compulsory drill (more about that in a mo).

Are There Life Jackets For All Age Groups?

Life jackets for all ages?

After all, you can’t expect a baby to fit into a full-sized adult life jacket.

And the answer is yes – the major cruise companies carry life jackets for all age groups.

One thing to be aware of, though, is many cruise lines will only allow you to bring babies aged over 6 months (or over 12 months on some routes).

Can I Try On My Life Jacket?

Actually, you’ll probably be expected to put it on before the ship sets sail.

Don’t worry! Not permanently, though!  Just as part of a drill.

On every cruise we’ve been on, we’ve had to attend a muster station drill.

Ready to try on our life jackets in the muster station drill

Muster Station Drill

Before the ship begins the cruise, you’ll have to attend a muster station drill.

Actually, I believe that by law this safety drill must be conducted within 24 hours of departure – but since the Costa Concordia disaster, most cruise companies have chosen do it before the ship sets sail.

This is what happens:

You’ll hear the ship’s alarm signal (don’t worry, you’ll have been told it’s only a practice).

Wherever you are on the ship, you’ll go to your cabin to collect your life jacket – and any medication you need (I told you they take these practices seriously).

Then you’ll head towards your pre-assigned muster station, carrying your life jacket (they don’t want you to wear it yet ‘cos everyone would start playing Mr Blobby games).

When everyone’s assembled at the muster station, you’ll listen to some safety announcements from the captain (don’t worry, there’ll be places to sit down).

And then, after you’ve watched the crew demonstrate how to don the life jackets, you’ll have lots of fun putting yours on and observing some of your fellow passengers treating them like an impossible Rubix Cube (there’s usually at least one person – listen for the laughter).

Lifejacket on a cruise ship

A few people will decide to blow the bright orange plastic whistle they’ve just found hanging by a cord from their life jacket (I hope the previous person to do that didn’t have any nasty bugs!).

And others will switch on the flashing light (I must admit to doing that once).

Eventually, you’ll be asked to remove your life jacket, the muster station drill will be over, and you’ll be released to follow everyone back up the staircase whilst sharing jokes with new friends about carrying these bulky bright orange lifejackets.

Back in your cabin, the life jacket will go safely back onto its shelf – in the hope that no one will never need it.

But if you do happen to need a life jacket…

  • Now you’ll know exactly where it is
  • Now you’ll know how to put it on securely
  • Now you’ll know how to get to your muster station
  • Now you’ll know where you can find other life jackets in case you can’t get to your cabin

Thankfully, safety is paramount on cruise ships…

Because Costa Concordia taught us we can’t afford for it not to be.

Titanic had insufficient lifeboat spaces for the numbers of people onboard, because they thought they wouldn’t need them on an unsinkable ship. The requirement now is that there are enough lifeboat spaces for 150% of the people onboard, on each side of the ship. This is because it’s hard to launch lifeboats down the side of a ship that is listing! So it’s even safer than you thought.

Thanks, Iain. That’s encouraging to know – particularly for anyone with a fear of water and reticent to go on a cruise.

Yes – cruising is a very safe holiday!

Life Jacket Recommendations

Spinlock inflatable

The Cruising Club of America

Recommendations by its Safety & Seamanship Committee [1]

regarding Life Jackets (Personal Flotation Devices - “PFDs”) for recreational boaters

The CCA recommends that, at the skipper’s discretion, all crew should WEAR A LIFE JACKET when on deck of a recreational boat. There are various types of life jackets with advantages and disadvantages, and that are appropriate for different conditions . [2] But the best one is the one you are WEARING. The boat's skipper should establish a culture of safety and protocols, the goal of which is: don't fall overboard .[3]

When sailing near shore in warm water, when conditions are and are expected to remain light/moderate, during daylight hours, and fully crewed: inherently buoyant (at least 15.5 pounds or 70 Newtons) “dinghy style” vest PFDs may be sufficient.

Otherwise, the CCA recommends that each crewmember wear a life jacket that meets either U.S. Coast Guard or ISO specifications: 33 pounds (150 Newtons) buoyancy for inflatables; 22 pounds (100 Newtons) for inherently buoyant lifejackets.  Such life jackets should include or be supplemented with a harness and be equipped with crotch or leg straps, a strobe light and a whistle.[4]

Many inflatable life jackets are more comfortable to wear and provide greater buoyancy. The CCA strongly recommends that users of inflatable life jackets should be trained in their operation, especially manual and oral inflation, and; that the life jackets be carefully inspected at a minimum annually, and prior to each offshore voyage, and be used, tested and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.[5]

It is the skipper’s responsibility to comply with U.S. Coast Guard or other authorities’ requirements.

Video: How to Wear a Life Jacket?

Life jacket is one of the most important personal protective equipment available on board ships . According to ship safety regulations, every seafarer on board ship is provided with a life jacket and he or she must know how to use it in case of emergencies.

Though the procedure of putting on a life jacket might seem an easy task, seafarers have often been found making mistakes in doing so, especially in case of emergency situations.

Read more about life jackets and important laws regarding them in here.

Evolution of the lifejacket

The inflatable lifejacket – it's essential for survival at sea. And often taken for granted. But like all the world’s great inventions it’s taken time and innovation to get here. A hundred years ago, lifejackets were bulky and cumbersome, containing cork or kapok for buoyancy. We continue to innovate every day to ensure you stay safe whatever waters you may be in.

Adventure Time: Things You Need To Know Before Taking An Expedition Cruise

“Leave your suitcase on the dock, grab a life jacket, and jump on the boat.”

Instead of using a walkway to get to our ship, we had to take a short boat ride, so I dutifully snapped the clasps of the bright red life jacket, found a spot on the edge of an inflatable zodiac boat (holding on to the rope behind me for dear life), and wondered what I had gotten myself into.

But by the end of the week, I was grateful that I had signed up for the expedition cruise. Though I had researched what to expect on the trip, experience is truly the best teacher. As the week unfolded, I learned a lot about this form of exploration and the type of people who take such cruises. Below are the most important takeaways.

Expedition ships are much smaller than traditional cruise ships

One of the first things to know before signing up for an expedition cruise is the ship size will pale in comparison to what you’re used to. While ships will vary in size, the MS Santa Cruz II holds up to 90 passengers, and our sailing had a little more than 60 passengers. I stayed in an explorer cabin, which had a comfortable double-size bed, wide window, and crisp navy and white nautical-inspired decor.

Since the ship is smaller, you can feel more movement, and we did experience some intense swaying one night, which made me nauseous. The crew provided me with anti-nausea medication, and I spent a few hours on the observation deck getting fresh air. Sea sickness is more common on a smaller ship, and if it’s your first time on a smaller cruise ship, it may take some time to get your “sea legs.”

And though the ship was small, the food was a big highlight. Hurtigruten Expeditions is a top-of-the-line cruise company, and the food they provided did not disappoint. Breakfast was a buffet of traditional dishes like bacon, eggs, pastries, waffles, and fresh fruit, and lunch and dinner were made-to-order three-course meals and included ceviche, roasted chicken, and prime rib. Alcoholic drinks were complimentary during mealtimes and there also was a bar for ordering drinks at night.

Your packing list is going to look a little different

The dress code on an expedition cruise is very casual. For most of the cruise, we wore our expedition gear (for me that meant leggings or shorts and a T-shirt). For a warm-weather voyage, it’s important to bring clothes that are going to get wet and possibly dirty and lots of sun protection because you’ll spend 90 percent of your day outdoors.

Be sure to pack a sunhat, water shoes, swimsuits, or a rash guard. I purchased a long-sleeve swimsuit at the airport in Quito, which turned out to be one of my best travel purchases. It’s also important to bring a backpack to store a change of clothes. In order to get to our expeditions, we had to disembark on the zodiac boat (sometimes two or three times a day) and we spent most of our time hiking, snorkeling, or swimming.

Off-ship activities are the focus

Expedition cruises are all about, well, you guessed it, expeditions. I had come with the sole purpose of seeing the Galápagos Islands, which are made up of 13 main islands and several small islands and islets. People flock here for the biodiversity and remoteness of the islands; most are uninhabited, and when we landed on an island, we were the only ones there.

Each day, there was a full itinerary waiting for us, and I explored several islands during the cruise. The first was Isabela, the largest of the Galápagos Islands. The volcanic island was covered in lush vegetation and it looked like something from a Jurassic Park movie. We sailed around the perimeter of the island, and I saw penguins, marine iguanas, and blue-footed boobies. Later that afternoon, I went for a glass-bottom boat ride where giant stingrays and sea turtles greeted us.

On Fernandina Island, we hiked the rocky terrain, dodged cacti, and took photos of sea otters just inches from us. My favorite stop was Santa Cruz, the most populated island, which is home to Galápagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Research Center. After visiting both centers, we headed to a tortoise farm, where we had close encounters with giant 100-year-old tortoises. Our last stop was Floreana Island, home to pink flamingos and white sand beaches.

An open mind and sense of adventure are necessary

Though you could carve out time to relax, an expedition cruise isn’t necessarily for travelers who want to lie by a pool with a cocktail in hand or who need non-stop entertainment. On our cruise, nightly activities included our tour guides hosting educational lectures, and our schedule was packed with activities (some that started as early as 7:30 a.m.).

An expedition cruise is great for those who have already done a bit of traveling and want to go deeper into exploring a location. My cruise was made up of a mix of families, retirees, and professionals in search of adventure. Though it wasn’t a typical cruise experience, this trip ended up making a significant impression on me. The wilderness of the Galápagos Islands coupled with up-close encounters with the wildlife is something I’ll never forget.

If your pooch gets in trouble from rough waves or falling overboard (it happens, one tester told us, when his dog tries to jump from Dad's kayak to Mom's kayak) your dog stays safe. Using one protects an older dog or one who is nervous around water, but even if your dog is a great swimmer, a sporty life jacket gives an added layer of protection .

The best dog life jackets include a grab handle so you can guide and lift your dog. Read size charts carefully so you buy the right one and then use all of the adjustable straps so the jacket stays on your dog without restricting their movements. At the Good Housekeeping Institute we have plenty to help you care for your pet . We created this list with the help of real-world testers and made sure our final picks are well-reviewed and from brands that our Lab experts have come to trust.

Not only did Ruffwear's Float Coat come recommended to us from pet owners who use a dog life jacket, we found it praised on Reddit and, as of press time, a solid 90 percent of its Amazon reviews were five-star. Users mention its high-quality fabric and buckles and that it's easy to get on and off. However, it also has the highest price on our list.

We like that the Float Coat has enough flotation for a dog who doesn't swim well but is also streamlined enough for a large dog that loves to swim, with plenty of room for movement around the front legs. There's a D ring tucked under the handle so you can attach a leash. It comes in six sizes, for small dogs (as narrow as a 13-inch girth) and large dogs (as wide as a 42-inch girth). Ruffwear is a respected brand when it comes to doggie outdoor accessories; it makes our favorite no-pull dog harness for long walks or hikes and our favorite dog coat for snow .

Sizes: XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL Range of girth: XXS starts at 13", XL ends at 42"

Outward Hound makes the Granby for "maximum visibility and flotation" so it's good for dogs you might worry about, like the ones who aren't strong swimmers. Added flotation under the chin helps your dog keep its head up. The Granby looks similar to a person's life jacket in that it's a little bulky. This affordable choice is not as sleek as our best overall, but in addition to the robust foam there are two rescue handles on the back, which might help you better lift your dog out of the water if or when you need to.

Our biggest issue with the Granby is that it does not have a D ring that you can use to attach your leash to the life vest. For some users, that means their dog wears its harness under the life jacket. Five sizing choices encompass a slightly larger range than our best overall pick. The XS starts at 11 inches and the XL goes to 44 inches. The brand recommends sizing up if your dog is at the top of a size's range.

Sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL Range of girth: XS starts at 11", XL ends at 44"

The Standley, also by Outward Hound, is for a more sporty dog. It's sleek and allows more unrestricted movement for dogs who are good swimmers and adept at boating, playing fetch in the waves or jumping off piers into deep water. A breathable mesh top and mesh belly panel help keep an active dog from overheating. The long rescue handle sits close to your dog's back for an aerodynamic look. The D ring sits right at the neck, to use when you need to leash your dog (especially good at a busy beach or dock).

The size range is the same on the Standley as it is on the Granby, our value pick. Outward Hound says that the Granby is its recommendation for beginners and this Standley is its choice for doggie-paddling pros. The brand makes a third dog life jacket, the Dawson , for mid-level swimmers.

You can fit your XXL dog — up to a 45-inch girth, which includes most big shepherds and retrievers — in the largest size of the Surf n' Turf dog life jacket. Reviewers with thick-necked breeds, like bulldogs, also like this choice because the neck is so adjustable. For instance, the small size of the jacket can fit a dog with a neck anywhere from 12 to 23 inches around.

Reviewers praise Kurgo's jacket for giving their dog water confidence without restricting movement. We like that the two rescue handles are oriented differently: one is vertical, the other horizontal, giving you more ways to grab, guide or lift your dog. The D ring is in the rear, near the tail, for attaching the leash. (That placement is best for dogs who don't pull.) While most dog life jackets should just be rinsed clean, Kurgo says its Surf n' Turf is machine washable. Kurgo also makes our favorite dog walking harness for large dogs .

Sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL Range of girth: XS starts at 14", XL ends at 45"

Users praise the buoyancy of the EzyDog life jacket, and it comes in five extra-small and small sizes to help fit a small or slender dog, including those as little as 7 pounds. It's very streamlined and not bulked up by foam, so it doesn't overwhelm a small pup. Even so, there is flotation help provided at the belly, which helps keep your small dog upright and swimming level to the water.

The collar adjusts at the top of the neck, where the rescue handle is, and not at your dog's chest or chin, so it can be more comfortable for some dogs — large ones too, as the EzyDog also has sizes for big dogs. Reviewers note that this jacket is on the pricey side, but often follow that up by saying it's worth it for the quality.

Sizes: 4XS, 3XS, 2XS, XS, S, M, L, XL Range of girth: XS starts at 12", XL ends at 41"

Have the most stylish pup at the pool party with this doggie life jacket, not just flag-bedecked but sporting a decorative shark fin on the top ! There's a rescue handle, too, in case you need to guide your dog out of the water, and there's a D ring near the collar so you can keep your dog leashed if they draw a crowd of admirers.

Dogcheer's vest comes in more than a dozen fun colors and patterns including a dog life jacket in a mermaid theme and one that's the doggie equivalent of a Hawaiian shirt . We just wouldn't recommend the gray which, though it's funny and shark-like, is not as highly visible as the others.

How we choose the best dog life jackets

a dog wearing a pink dog life jacket poses on a couch, part of a good housekeeping list of the best dog life jackets

We don't have a pool, lake or ocean in the Good Housekeeping Institute Labs, and while we can see the Hudson River from our 29th floor, we weren't going to require dogs to jump in to test dog life jackets.

Instead, we relied on testers around the country to give us feedback about their favorite dog life jackets and how they use them. We also poured through online reviews and leaned into brands we've grown to trust. You can find more product recommendations for dog people on our site, including the best air purifiers for pets (we've tested about 50 of them!) and the best dog beds , done with the help of our Textiles Lab pros.

What to look for when shopping for the best dog life jacket

line break

When making your choice, your top considerations are:

✔️ Sizing: Fit is critical for safety and comfort. Measure your dog's girth , but also check out a dog life jacket's dimensions to see if you think it will match up with your dog's short or long torso, for instance. We've also marked our choices for small and for large dogs, if you're very concerned about size.

✔️ Your dog's swimming ability: If your dog is not a natural swimmer (looking at you, French bulldogs and boxers) you might want something like our value choice with a lot of extra floatation. But if your dog is pretty great swimmer, like most retrievers, you could get something more sporty that lets them move freely, like our best for boating. Our best overall choice splits the difference — it's got flotation without being bulky.

✔️ Visibility: Most dog life jackets come in highly visible neon colors, plus reflective trim, so you're probably pretty safe here. It's a reminder of why you're shopping for a dog's life jacket to begin with — so you can spot your pup in murky or choppy waters, or if the light dims during a storm or as evening comes.

✔️ Rescue handle: We've only included dog life jackets that have a rescue handle or two on the back, which can help you grab and lift your wet dog out of the water if there's trouble, or guide it to shore.

✔️ D ring: We prefer dog life jackets that include one, so your dog doesn't have to wear its harness under the life jacket. If you're on a boat you can leash your dog securely to the boat on one end and to their life jacket on the other, rather than leashing their collar, so their neck won't be injured if they go overboard. Boat-ed.com has other tips for safely boating with dogs .

Do dogs need life jackets?

a teenager takes his dog for a float in the pool, part of a good housekeeping list of the best dog life jackets

Just like humans, dogs are safest around water when wearing a life jacket — even if they know how to swim. The ASPCA reminds dog owners that even strong canine swimmers can get cramps while swimming, grow exhausted far from shore or get overwhelmed by strong tides. A doggie life jacket is a "better safe than sorry" investment.

Then there are the dogs who aren't strong swimmers to begin with, like Teddy, pictured. "Teddy is a 10-year-old rescue. He's half bulldog, half pug, therefore he does not float," Teddy's owner told us. "But he loves the pool and barks until we let him in. He swims with his life jacket until he gets tired and then he floats on a raft."
