Frolick on the Fjord

The white sand beaches of Kiel Fjord.

With white sand beaches, seaside cafés, craggy coastal cliffs and sought-after kite surfing spots, Kiel Fjord is a haven for adventure- and relaxation-seekers alike. The Kiel Fjord spans nearly 12 miles long and is home to the Naval Memorial, which hosts panoramic views of the fjord from its 230-foot observation deck.

The U-995 from WWII has been turned into a modern museum.

Sail Into the Past

The U-995 from WWII has been turned into a modern museum.

Kiel has been a bustling port for centuries, with a long history as a shipyard, naval base and safe haven for sailors. The Kiel Maritime Museum gives a glimpse of the past through its 19th-century ships, wooden models and exhibits on the city's maritime history. In nearby Laboe, the U-995 World War II museum hosts the only surviving German submarine of its kind.

The Kiel Canal is an exciting place to watch ships glide by.

Cycle the Kiel Canal

The 60-mile freshwater canal connecting Kiel to Brunsbüttel is the busiest artificial waterway in the world. Rent a bicycle in the city center, and pedal along the tranquil path that hugs the Kiel Canal. Dozens of ships come through daily — often more than the Panama and Suez canals combined — making it a great place to stop and observe.

Kieler Sprotte, a kind of smoked fish, is the iconic snack of Kiel, Germany.

LOCAL CUISINE

Snack like a sailor and try Kieler Sprotte, small smoked fish served whole. Or, opt for a meal of pears, green beans and bacon (Birnen, Bohnen und Speck) boiled together and plated with potatoes. If it's chilly out, warm yourself up with Schnüüsch, a hearty stew of vegetables cooked in milk and seasoned with parsley.

One of the best souvenirs to take home from Kiel is a wooden model ship.

Kiel's artisans are famed for their model ships, available for purchase in local gift shops. You can also return home with a nautical antique collected from the ships that have come to rest in Kiel's harbor, often found for a bargain at the city's flea markets. For more modern retailers, head to the mall of Sophienhof Kiel and its more than 100 shops.

The entrance to the Kiel Canal near Port Holtenau

Enter Kiel Canal Holtenau

If you ever wondered where the Holstein cow comes from, you’ll find out by traveling along the Kiel Canal, which cuts diagonally 98 kilometers (61 miles) through Schleswig-Holstein. Passengers crossing the canal from east to west enter at Holtenau, a town just north of the port of Kiel. The northern German state is a far cry from the tourist image of beer halls, lederhosen and dirndls: Up here, Germans are known for lounging on the beach in  Strandkörbe  (shaded canvas beach chairs) or watching the sea from covered wicker sofas out of a Thomas Mann novel. The heaths and low hills that reign allow wind farms to harness energy, while the nation’s largest national park, the Wadden Sea, is made up of vast estuaries that in 2009 earned it UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

Called the Nord-Ostsee in German, the Kiel Canal, which connects the Elbe River with the Baltic Sea, was a pet project of Wilhelm II; he finished it just in time for World War I, sparing ships then and since the 400-kilometer (250-mile) journey around Denmark. Today, you sail quietly past waterfowl in the marshes, as well as cows, sheep and bike riders along the banks. You’ll witness small freight ships sharing the water with pleasure craft helmed by serious sailors heading to their yacht clubs, all of which make the Kiel Canal the world’s most trafficked manmade waterway.

Kiel (Hamburg), Germany

cruise kiel

Just west of Berlin, Hamburg is one of Europe’s largest and major ports. It sits right on the Elbe river, which is just one of its many (many!) bodies of water all around this city. So much so that it has about 2,500 bridges to cross over them, more than any other city in the world. Visit the Alster Lakes, once a water reservoir to power old mills and now a place where people come to enjoy the outdoors, you’ll find kayaking, biking and other fun maritime activities. There is also a great deal of rich history here: The huge 18th century Church of St. Michael, with its beautiful architecture from the Baroque period is a marvel – and a great photo op. And when you’re ready to unwind, walk down the streets of the Reeperbahn, a vibrant and well-known entertainment street in the St. Pauli district, also famous for its red light district.

  • Admire the beautiful canals and brick gothic of Speicherstadt, a historic UNESCO landmark from the 19th century.
  • Visit the 17th century buildings of Krameramtsstuben, which amazingly survived the bomb raids of WWII.
  • Shop and sightsee at the grand promenade of Jungfernsteig, located along the waterfront of Binnenalster.

cruise kiel

The grand harbor and seaside promenade take center stage in this historical maritime city that’s the gateway to the famed Kiel Canal. Everywhere you go – the Kiel Fjord, the museums and memorials in the city center, the bustling waterfront known as Kiellinie – you’ll feel the seafaring and naval influences. Top choices include the maritime-focused Schifffahrtsmuseum, Aquarium GEOMAR, Botanical Gardens Kiel and of course, stopping at a café along the promenade to enjoy the ever-changing vista of the harbor. Just outside of Kiel in Laboe, you can explore a restored German submarine U-995 on Ostsee beach, a somber reminder of the city’s role as the main German submarine base during World War II.

Kiel is at the end of a 17 km long fjord. The sea comes right into the heart of the city. The great natural feature in Kiel is the fjord with its beaches. The maritime aspect of the city with its harbors, the massive passenger ferries and the enormous cranes on the docks – that's typical Kiel.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Tourist Attractions in Kiel.

Getting around Germany is incredible easy. The train network is comfortable, reliable, fast and reasonably priced. German roads are also excellent and motorized transport can be a great way to tour the country.

The national and famous motorway network known as autobahnen, officially there is no general speed limit, but, in an attempt to increase safety and control the pollution, a lot of segments have speed limits (which are strictly controlled). If you rent a car, make sure you stay in the right lane at all times, except when passing! Speeds of 200km or over are not uncommon.

Taxis are dependable, but expensive.

German fast food is cheap, hearty and diverse; there are a number of sausage stands, imbisses and specialty stands; you have many options from which choose. Many of the fast food is of Turkish origin, this food is very popular for being cheap and healthy. The German's favorite Turkish fast food is the Doner Kebab; a thick pita filled generally with either chicken or beef complemented with fresh French fries and salad.

Port Kiel Canal cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Kiel Canal, Germany. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Kiel Canal (aka Nord-Ostsee Kanal) is an artificial waterway located in northwestern Germany. It links North Sea with Baltic Sea and extends northeast from Brunsbuttel (near Elbe River's mouth) to Port Kiel (Baltic Sea).

The canal (fka Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal) was built in the period 1887-1895 and subsequently enlarged (widened in the period 1907-1914), It has length approx 98 km (61 mi), width 102 m (335 ft) and max depth 11 m (36 ft). The canal shortened the distance between both seas by about 322 km (200 mi) and eliminated the difficult passage around Jutland. In 1919 (after WW1), the canal was internationalized by the Treaty of Versailles, leaving the waterway under German administration.

  • There are detailed canal passing rules as each ship is classified in one of 6 traffic groups (based on vessel dimensions). Bigger ships must navigate the canal with the assistance of local pilots and specialized helmsmen, Largest ships are provided with tugboat assistance. Some bigger ships are required to moor at bollards (placed at intervals along the canal) in order to allow passing of oncoming vessels. Special rules apply to passenger ships (cruise and pleasure craft).
  • Large, cruise liners can't pass through Kiel Canal due to its clearance limits (42 m / 138 ft) under fixed bridges. Viking Cruises  ocean ships (a new series of sister-ships) were designed specifically to be able to pass through Kiel Canal.
  • The max dimensions of vessels passing the canal are LOA length 235,5 m (773 ft), max width 32,5 m (107 ft), max height 40 m (130 ft) and max draft 7 m (23 ft). Ships with LOA length 160 m (525 ft) may have max draft 9,5 m (31 ft).
  • Shipping traffic also includes 14  ferry lines,  all ferries being free of charge and operated by Kiel Canal Authority.

Kiel Canal is crossed by railway lines and highways on all 11 fixed links. In sequence (west to east / Brunsbuttel to Holtenau) these are Brunsbuttel Bridge (4 lane road), Hochdonn Bridge (railway), Hohenhorn Bridge (highway / Autobahn 23), Grunental Bridge (railway), Rendsburg Bridge (suspended / railway), Rendsburg tunnel (pedestrian), Kanaltunnel Rendsburg tunnel (4 lane road), Rade Bridge (highway / Autobahn A7), Levensau Bridge (railway and road), New Levensau Bridge (4 lane road) and the parallel Holtenau Bridges (each with 3 lanes).

In March 2013, Kiel Canal was partially closed due to failure of two lock gates near Brunsbuttel. Vessels with LOA length over 125 m (410 ft) were redirected via Skagerrak (450 km / 280 mi long detour). In July 2014, the German Federal Parliament allocated EUR 265 million for a canal widening project (of its eastern section). The fund allocation followed the April 2014 approved budget of EUR 485 million for construction of the 5th lock (in Brunsbuttel).

These expansion projects directly benefited the on-canal ports Brunsbuttel, Hochdonn, Hohenhörn, Rendsburg and Kiel, as well as Port Hamburg and Germany's entire economy and industry. Kiel Canal is the fastest connection between Hamburg and Baltic Sea. In 2013, around 2 million TEU containers were shipped on this route. Between Hamburg (Germany) and Gdynia (Gdansk Poland) , feeder vessels ( container ships ) save 1/2 the distance when passing through the canal compared to the route around Skagen Denmark . In 2013, the canal's shipping traffic and cargo volumes were, respectively, 31097 ships and 94,8 million tons.

In the period January 2020 - December 2023 are conducted Kiel Canal widening works. For the project was contracted a joint venture company of Deme Group - Belgium-based company specializing in dredging, land reclamation, infra marine works. By the EUR 99 million (USD 110 M) project the canal's eastern section will be expanded 4 km (2,5 mi). The joint venture includes Deme's subsidiaries Nordsee Nassbagger- und Tiefbau Gmbh and Dredging International NV. Canal's bottom width will be increased from the current 44 m (144 ft) to 70 m (230 ft), allowing larger cargo ships to navigate the waterway. The project also includes landscaping works, including ~2 million m3 of soil moved, 1+ million m3 of soil dredged and dumped, ~58,000 m2 revetments installed riverside.
