Port Lyttelton-Christchurch cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Lyttelton-Christchurch, New Zealand. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Port Lyttelton is the cruise port serving Christchurch - the largest city on New Zealand's South Island. The seaport is located to the southeast of the city. Christchurch has population around 375,000, ranking it NZ's 3rd largest urban area - after Auckland and Wellington .

Lyttelton (cruise port to Christchurch) is a port town located on the eastern coast of South Island (New Zealand). The cruise port Lyttelton Harbour is at Banks Peninsula's northwestern end. The distance from Lyttelton to Christchurch is approx 12 km (7,5 mi) - to the northwest. The town covers a total area of approx 15 km2 (5,6 mi2) and has population around 3,000 (including the neighbouring Cass Bay, Corsair Bay, and Rapaki.

Lyttelton Harbour and Akaroa Harbour are the two major inlets of Banks Peninsula (Canterbury, NZ). The harbor has length approx 15 km (9,3 mi) from its mouth to Teddington. Like Akaroa Harbour, Lyttelton is the caldera of an extinct volcano,

Lyttelton is linked with Christchurch by 1-track rail tunnel (1867-opened), also by 2-lane road tunnel (1964-opened) and 2 roads. Near Lyttelton Harbour's head is located Quail Island (nature reserve), and to the south is Ripapa Island.

Christchurch

Christchurch NZ is the seat of Canterbury Region. The urban area is on the eastern coast of South Island NZ, and north of Banks Peninsula. The city was named on March 27, 1848. On July 31, 1856, it received the city status (declared by Royal Charter), officially making it the oldest established city in NZ.

Avon River flows through downtown. An urban park is situated along the river banks. the city is distinctively English, with various European elements and featuring Gothic Revival architecture. As New Zealand's early settlers, Maori culture is also widespread. The town has a lot of public spaces, cafes, bars and restaurants in the centre and also in the surrounding suburbs.

The large number of parks and residential gardens has given Christchurch the name "The Garden City". Hagley Park and Christchurch Botanic Gardens are in the central part. Hagley Park serves as a site for sporting events, including golf, netball, rugby, cricket, as well as for open-air live concerts performed by local orchestras and bands.

To the north is Willowbank (wildlife park). An ecological restoration program to create a wetland (Travis Wetland) is to the east of downtown (in the Burwood suburb).

Port Lyttelton

Lyttelton is the main seaport of Canterbury (Christchurch) area since 1877. During the 1970s, Lyttelton was one of South Island's main ports upgraded for containerization. Its container terminal was inaugurated in 1977. Most of South Island's coal cargo is shipped from Lyttelton. The port also has a petroleum storage terminal and large container / bulk cargo terminal.

Port Lyttelton has been historically regarded as "Gateway to Canterbury" by its colonial settlers. The port is a regular travel destination for NZ cruise ships. It is South Island's principal cargo port (goods transport terminal) handling around 61% of all imports and 34% of all exports by value.

In 2009, NZHPT (New Zealand Historic Places Trust) gave Lyttelton the status "Category I Historic Area". Lyttelton is the biggest settlement on Lyttelton Harbour. The harbor waterway is an inlet on Banks Peninsula's northwestern side. The town is on Port Hills' lower slopes that separate it from Christchurch City. A road tunnel through Port Hills links Lyttelton with Christchurch (to the northwest). Sumner Town is approx 6 km (3,7 mi) to the northeast and is accessed through Evans Pass. Governors Bay is approx 10 km (6,2 mi) to the west.

Much of Lyttelton's architectural heritage was lost in the 2010-2011 earthquakes. Damages were considered too extensive for reconstruction. Town's oldest churches have also collapsed, among which was the Holy Trinity Avonside.

Following the earthquakes, for several years cruise ships instead of in Lyttelton docked in Akaroa. Regularly scheduled ferries link Lyttelton with Diamond Harbour (on the harbour's southern coast). The uninhabited Quail Island is southwest of Lyttelton.

In June 2018 started construction works on Port Lyttelton's new cruise berth (completed in November 2020). The USD 67 million facility is located between Inner Harbour's entrance and Cashin Quay. It became NZ's first custom-built cruise berth with capacity to handle world's largest passenger ships . The new berth is designed to withstand earthquakes and waves generated from storms and northwest winds typical for the region. The Terminal's existing berth is still used by smaller-sized vessels. On November 16, at the new berth docked MS Professor Khromov (fka Spirit of Enderby) . The operated under charter Russian ice-strengthened ship departed from Vladivostok Russia carrying only crew (22 Russians) who remained in isolation onboard for 43 days total. Professor Khromov then continued to Invercargill (NZ's southernmost and westernmost city) to pick up its first cruisers for the voyage to Stewart Island/Oban and Fiordland NP .

For season 2019, the cruise port had scheduled 19 ship calls.

Lyttelton-Christchurch cruise terminal

Cruise ships to Christchurch NZ dock in Lyttelton Harbour (at port's Inner harbor). The pier is located at short walking distance from downtown. Lyttelton Port Authority provides complimentary shuttle bus service between the cruise terminal and the tourist info center in downtown Lyttelton. The port has 2 dedicated cruise berths and capacity to dock two liners simultaneously.

Most cruise companies offer complimentary shuttle buses to Christchurch City's center. From Lyttelton, cruise passengers can also take public Bus Route 28 (Papanui-Lyttelton-Rapaki) to Christchurch. Bus travel time is approx 30 min.

New Lyttelton cruise ship pier

On May 1, 2017, Lyttelton Port Company announced its plans to construct a new cruise ship pier (berthing / docking facility) in Lyttelton. The completed in 2020 facility is Christchurch's first purposely-built cruise ship dock with capacity to accommodate the world's biggest cruise liners . The new cruise berth is designed to accommodate vessels even of the RCI's Oasis-class - LOA length 362 m, weight 225,282 GT tons, capacity over 5400 passengers plus 2400 crew.

Previously, as Port Lyttelton was unable to handle large cruise vessels, they docked in Akaroa instead. Construction works were initially scheduled for completion by 2019 but the project was extended through November 2020.

NZ's cruise industry has worth of around AUD 490 million to the country's economy (season 2016–2017 statistics).

Discover Christchurch Tour (6 hours)

This small group tour sounds fantastic. We have first-hand experience with each activity and, therefore, feel super comfortable recommending this tour.

Three amazing activities are back-to-back. First, ride the Christchurch Gondola. Next, head to the city and enjoy a city tour on a historic tram. Finally, punt on the Avon River.

To cap it off, you’ll have lunch at Little High Eatery, a vibrant food hall with a variety of delicious options to satisfy your taste buds. Reserve your Discover Christchurch Tour here .

Christchurch City Sights (base tour 3.5 hours)

The Christchurch City Sights tour is a perfect introduction to the city and the baseline for the next four tours we recommend. This 3.5-hour tour takes you from Lyttelton, driving uphill for amazing views, a short stroll through Mona Vale Gardens, an exploration of Cathedral Square, and a delightful lunch at Riverside Market. Reserve your Christchurch city sights tour here .

If you have more time, you can visit all of these sites, plus one other in any of these tours:

  • Christchurch and International Antarctic Centre Tour (6.5 hours) After seeing the venues on the city sights tour, head to the International Antarctic Centre. You will have time for the other key activities, as well as learning about life in Antarctica and seeing the adorable penguins. Reserve your Christchurch tour with the Antarctic Center here .
  • Christchurch and Willowbank Wildlife Reserve Tour (6.5 hours) If wildlife is more your style then this tour, including Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, is a must. In addition to the City Sights highlights, you’ll have the chance to see the iconic kiwi bird up close and learn about New Zealand’s native wildlife in a beautiful natural setting. Reserve your Christchurch sights with Willowbank Wildlife Reserve tour here.

Explore the region, but skip the city (from Lyttelton)

sign post for the Crater Rim Walkway on the Godley Head Loop one of the options from the Lyttelton cruise port

If you have been to Christchurch previously, or just are not a fan of cities, one of these options from Lyttelton might appeal.

Lyttelton Shore Excursion – Guided Walking Tour and Picnic (5 hours)

After a morning tea overlooking the ocean, you will walk the Godley Head Loop (what many consider to be Christchurch’s number one hike). The 3-hour hike covers 8 km (5 miles) and offers impressive coastal views, historic WW2 landmarks, and charming beaches. Reserve your Lyttelton shore excursion guided walking tour and picnic here.

Lyttelton Shore Excursion – Inland Canterbury & Castle Hill Tour (7 hours)

Different from the other tours here, this one takes you inland, where you will stop in a few charming country towns while you enjoy scenic mountain passes and beautiful alpine lakes. The highlight is Castle Hill/Kura Tawhiti, a stunning labyrinth of giant limestone boulders where you can enjoy a guided walk or try bouldering and explore at your own pace. Reserve your inland Canterbury & Castle Hill tour here .

Options from the Akaroa cruise port

The charming coastal town of Akaroa is one of the docks used as a Christchurch cruise port

Akaroa, with its charming French influence, offers a delightful and picturesque escape on a protected marine reserve . The harbour is home to playful Hector’s dolphins , the world’s smallest and rarest dolphins, making it an ideal spot for dolphin tours and other water activities. The village itself is filled with quaint streets, beautiful gardens, and delightful cafes.

It’s important to note that Akaroa is a tender port, so getting on and off the ship takes a bit longer. Additionally, it’s a 90-minute drive to Christchurch, meaning that transportation there and back will use up a large portion of your time on shore.

That said, there are still plenty of options to go from Akaroa to Christchurch.

Christchurch shore excursions from Akaroa Cruise Port (6 hours)

a path in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens

If your ship is mooring in Akaroa, and exploring Christchurch city is on your bucket list, we recommend one of these tours. They all start out basically the same, pointing out sights in Akaroa. Then, you enjoy a scenic drive as you head up and over the Banks Peninsula.

Next, it’s on to Christchurch, where each of these tours includes a stop at the Botanic Gardens, a stop at Cathedral Square, and a third stop, which is what separates one from the other. Interestingly, all have great reviews.

Tour Banks Peninsula, Christchurch City Tour and . . .

  • …International Antarctic Centre You will have two hours at the Antarctic Centre, enough time to do all four key activities there. Reserve your Banks Peninsula, Christchurch City, and the International Antarctic Centr e tour here .
  • …Willowbank Wildlife Reserve In addition to the city tour, you’ll have the chance to see the iconic kiwi bird up close and learn about New Zealand’s native wildlife in a beautiful natural setting. Reserve your Banks Peninsula, Christchurch City, and Willowbank Wildlife tour here.
  • … Giants House Tour After exploring Christchurch’s main sights, you’ll head back to Akaroa and enjoy a guided tour of the fascinating Giants House. Reserve your Banks Peninsula, Christchurch City, and Giants House tour here.
  • …Sheep Farm Tour Coombe Farm will be your final stop. Here, you can witness sheep dogs rounding up the flock and penning them as well as a shearing demonstration. Reserve your Banks Peninsula, Christchurch City, and sheep farm tour here.

Swimming with wild dolphins (3 hours)

Getting an opportunity to swim with the endangered Hector’s dolphin, the world’s rarest and smallest oceanic dolphin is pretty amazing and unique. This small group option fills up quickly when ships are in port, as it takes only 12 swimmers. And you can feel good about your choice as a portion of the ticket price goes towards research and conservation of Hector’s dolphins. Reserve your swimming with wild dolphins experience here .

Akaroa nature and dolphin cruise (2 hours)

If you want to get out on the water and discover some of the local wildlife, including the endangered Hector’s dolphins, little penguins, seals, and various other birds, there are two great options. Both offer highly-rated 2-hour tours in the harbour and cruise by similar locations while spotting various wildlife.

  • Reserve your Akaroa Harbour nature cruise tour here.
  • Reserve your Akaroa dolphin nature cruise tour here.

Hire a private guide

If none of excursions offered by your ship, or none of the above appeals to you, you can always create your own adventure with a private guide. We do this often at cruise ports as we have lots to see and limited time. Reserve a guide here .

Oooh there are so many fab options in and around Christchurch. I love that you included options to skip the city as well (I like Christchurch… but we do normally want to get out into the countryside as soon as possible!)

It’s funny, I never considered a cruise when we explored NZ – but I bet it would be a fabulous coastline to see from a ship!!

CHRISTCHURCH

Ōtautahi (oar-toe-ta-he).

Christchurch Ōtautahi is New Zealand’s oldest and third-largest city, known as the Garden City. It was designed like a traditional English city with a grid layout, making it really easy to explore on foot. Plus, the city is very flat, so unless you’re heading to the Port Hills, you won’t have to worry about walking up any hills.

Even though the central city took a big hit during the Canterbury Earthquakes (2010-2011), Christchurch has bounced back with a cool mix of restored historic buildings and new, modern architecture. This has created a vibrant and innovative city vibe while keeping that English charm with its beautiful gardens, river punting, and lovely parks.

Whether you hop on the iconic tram, explore The Arts Centre and Botanic Gardens, or try some local goodies at Riverside Market or New Regent Street, you're sure to have a great port day in Christchurch.

17 Best Things to Do in Christchurch

By Daniel James Clarke

Last updated: October 28th, 2022

Board the TranzAlpine Express, one of the best things to do in Christchurch

  • Find a Cruise

Christchurch is the largest city on New Zealand’s South Island, with many memorable things to do. From admiring the acclaimed Botanic Gardens to finding inspiration in modern museums, the city effortlessly blends urban living with countryside charm.

Forward-thinking inventiveness, combined with Christchurch’s leafy green spaces, relaxing Avon River, and proximity to the peaceful waters of Pegasus Bay make the city one of the nation’s most inviting to slow down and soak in the South Island’s laid-back aura.

Here are the best things to do in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Ride the Christchurch Gondola

View of Christchurch Gondola

Christchurch Gondola

One of the best ways to begin your visit to New Zealand’s second city is onboard the Christchurch Gondola, a perfect way to get your regional bearings and admire the impressive scenery that New Zealand is known for .

Departing from the base station in Heathcote Valley, a little under 15 minutes from the city, you’ll slowly rise to the summit on a 10-minute ride. As you gently climb, panoramas over the verdant Canterbury Plains, lofty dramatic peaks, and the dazzling hues of the bay will keep your camera in action.

People sightseeing from Christchurch Gondola

Once you reach the summit, settle in for a coffee at the café to admire the far-reaching vistas across the craggy natural reserves and cerulean-hued harbor below.

Visit the Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Lush landscape of Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Often rated as one of the best gardens in the world, a relaxing stroll around Christchurch’s Botanic Gardens will allow you to discover both exotic international plants and domestic flora.

Lush landscape of Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Since the first oak tree was planted in 1863, the well-manicured area has grown to include nearly 52 acres. With 10 different gardens and plants ranging from sweet-scented roses to colorful seasonal tulips, the space is a serene escape for all the senses.

Inside the conservatory, succulents and orchids vie for your attention, and the visitors’ center has a quaint café.

In a city celebrated for its green spaces, a combined visit here and to surrounding Hagley Park is undoubtedly one of the most peaceful things to do in Christchurch.

Relax in Hagley Park

Beautiful landscape of Hagley Park

Hagley Park

Straddling the Botanic Gardens, Hagley Park is Christchurch’s green lung, covering more than 400 acres. Since the 1850s, the park has been a central part of the community and is a living testament to the city’s aim to be a genuinely green urban space.

Hagley Park in Spring

With a golf course, tennis facilities, and a croquet club, you’ll find plenty of locals enjoying the natural setting, which is especially spectacular during spring for the cherry blossoms.

The rest of the year, the aged trees and matured woodlands make for an enjoyable walk after visiting the Botanic Gardens or strolling along the Avon River.

Sightsee on the Christchurch Tram

Street view of Christchurch tram

Christchurch tram

Hopping aboard Christchurch’s vintage tramcars allows for an alternative way to see the city’s main sights with a hop-on hop-off itinerary.

The fully restored (and photo-friendly) vehicles are far from just a tourist-focused attraction, though, having been a central part of the city’s heritage for over 100 years.

In 1880, a steam motor-operated track opened to link the railway station with the city center, followed by the first electric tramway, launched in 1905.

Street view of Christchurch tram

Nowadays, the route links 18 stops, including popular sights such as the Botanic Gardens, the New Regent Street shopping precinct, and the Avon River punting point.

Along the way, expect an informative commentary from the driver, providing historical knowledge and current context as the city rolls past you.

Stroll Along the Avon River

Lush landscape of Avon River

Flowing through the center of Christchurch, the meandering Avon River is a haven for walkers looking to slow down and appreciate the city’s greenery.

Whether you prefer to follow the curve around the Botanic Gardens or the park at Avonside Red Zone, the riverbank scenery is spectacular at all times of the year.

Punting trip along Avon River

One of the most memorable things to do in Christchurch to experience the Avon River is to take a punting trip as you glide along the waters past some of the city’s best-known attractions.

In a traditional wooden boat guided by an equally traditionally dressed punter, the art of directing the craft by pole is just as interesting as the sights on route.

You can opt to punt down two sections of the river, though you may find the Botanic Gardens departure from the Antigua Boat Sheds more tranquil than the central route.

Understand the Devastation at Quake City

While the topic may seem unnerving, one of Christchurch’s newest museums, Quake City allows visitors to understand the devastating impact the relatively recent earthquakes had on the city.

Through displays of recovered items and interactive experiences, you’ll grasp an understanding of the raw power of the devastation.

Likewise, the video stories recounting how the earthquakes impacted the city and its residents provide further insight into the events which unfolded during the 2010 and 2011 seismic activity.

Witness Nature at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

Wildlife in Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

New Zealand’s wildlife may not be as famous as that of its larger neighbor Australia, partly due to the country having no natural land predators.

Still, its extensive native birdlife is no less fascinating or treasured—in fact, Kiwis (the affectionate nickname of the country’s residents) even have an annual “bird of the year” competition.

Kiwi bird in Christchurch

The citizens’ nickname, however, comes from the kiwi bird, an endemic flightless bird whose feathers look almost like fur. To spot them near Christchurch, take a trip to Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, where the country’s first open-air conservation environment for the birds was founded.

Set up by a passionate family decades ago, the reserve is dedicated to preservation and education through native and endangered breeding programs.

Other animal sightings you can expect at Willowbank include alpacas, Shetland ponies, and the adorable Valais blacknose sheep, originating from Switzerland.

Discover the Deep South at the International Antarctic Centre

Penguin at the International Antarctic Centre

If you are interested in all things South Pole, visiting the International Antarctic Center is one of the most fascinating things to do in Christchurch.

Located close to the airport, the center serves as both a research unit and a science museum, with highly interactive experiences. You’ll be able to meet some of Antarctica’s natives in the Penguin Rescue Center.

Enter the Storm Dome to appreciate the below-freezing chill of an ice cave hideaway, whipped by realistic Antarctic winds with a chill factor of -0.4°F.

Board the TranzAlpine Express

Board the TranzAlpine Express, one of the best things to do in Christchurch

TranzAlpine Express

For a deeper discovery of sublime landscapes beyond Christchurch, board the TranzAlpine Express, linking the east and west coast of New Zealand’s South Island . Covering 139 miles, you can experience the journey on a day trip, sitting back and taking in the panoramas.

Traversing from Christchurch to Greymouth, the scenic ride takes in Arthur’s Pass, a national park of high peaks, scree slopes, and steep gorges, before continuing through dense alpine forests.

With pauses along the way at the most striking locations, there are countless impressive photography opportunities during the journey.

Enjoy Exhibitions at Christchurch Art Gallery

Glass building of the Christchurch Art Gallery

Christchurch Art Gallery

Te Puna o Waiwhetū, otherwise known as Christchurch Art Gallery, is housed inside one of the city’s most striking contemporary buildings.

Beyond the towering wave of glass panels which take their inspiration from the ripples of the River Avon, the museum hosts vast temporary and permanent exhibitions celebrating New Zealand’s creative scene and heritage.

Sculptures, audio-visual art, and canvases are well-represented, including work from both New Zealand artists and European classics. Guides offer gallery tours to add additional context to some of the most well-regarded and harder-to-understand pieces.

Soak in the Sun at Sumner Beach

Beautiful landscape of Sumner Beach

Sumner Beach

If you ask a local for their suggestion of things to do in Christchurch on a warmer day, chances are Sumner Beach will be high on their list of recommendations.

Set at the start of the breathtaking Banks Peninsula, this creamy-colored New Zealand beach acts as a gateway to the serene, verdant trails of the peninsula’s park.

Tuawera/Cave Rock

On the beach, Tuawera (Cave Rock), a craggy, lava-crafted tidal cave, can be explored at low tide, while the promenade has cafés and an ice cream shop, making for an ideal afternoon escape from the city.

Savor Afternoon Tea at Manderley Family Farm

People hanging out at the lush Manderley Family Farm, Christchurch

Manderley Family Farm

Canterbury, the region surrounding Christchurch, is home to countless small family-run farms, producing everything from New Zealand’s celebrated lamb to artisanal cheeses.

For a flavor of the country’s farm life, you don’t need to venture far from the city, and Manderley Family Farm, a 45-minute drive, happily welcomes visitors.

Set amongst 750 lush acres, the homestead, dating from 1876, is the heart of the operation. Here, you can witness sheep shearing, enjoy a tempting traditional afternoon tea, and learn more about rural life in New Zealand, all on a short afternoon trip from Christchurch.

Reflect at the Bridge of Remembrance

Bridge of Remembrance

Spanning across the Avon River, the Bridge of Remembrance serves as a poignant reminder of the service personnel lost to war.

Initially opened in 1924, the structure suffered damage during the 2011 earthquakes, though in 2016, it reopened on ANZAC day (Australia and New Zealand’s day of remembrance).

Decorated with sculptural work, memorial plaques, and inscriptions, the now pedestrian-only bridge can be easily visited as you walk along the Avon River pathway.

Lounge on New Brighton Beach

Quiet beach of New Brighton Beach

New Brighton Beach

One of the best things to do in Christchurch on a sunny day is head to New Brighton Beach. Less than 20 minutes from the city center, this swathe of sand stretches some 11 miles from Southshore to Waimairi, with dunes, walking trails, and bay views on offer alongside the opportunity to top up your tan.

While the waters might be a little nippy, they are popular with locals for refreshing dips or surfing when waves allow. In New Brighton village, a city suburb, you can enjoy a fresh seafood meal (New Zealand’s green-lipped mussels are delicious), stroll along the pier, or relax in the hot pools.

Learn About Military Aviation at the Airforce Museum

Housing over 100 years of New Zealand’s military aviation history, this old air base in Wigram, a short drive from the city, provides insight and artifacts from the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Now the National Air Force Museum, the collection has developed over the years and has vastly outgrown its original single hangar exhibition, expanding to hold items from before World War One until the present day.

You can sit in a Skyhawk cockpit, admire the engineering work of the Sioux helicopter, or join a behind-the-scenes tour to see additional aircraft in the “reserve collection”.

Go Wine Tasting in Waipara

Vineyard in Waipara

Waipara Valley

If sipping a crisp glass of riesling or savoring a rich pinot noir sounds like your perfect outing, then wine tasting in Waipara is one of the best things to do in Christchurch’s surrounding region.

An hour north of the city, the Waipara Valley wine region is renowned for its rich gravel and clay soils and vines protected by the hills.

Well-known wine producers and estates, such as Pegasus Bay and Greystone, offer cellar-door tastings, allowing the chance to savor the local grapes against the backdrop of the vineyards in which they were grown.

Set Sail from Lyttelton Harbour

Aerial view of Lyttelton Harbour

Lyttelton Harbour

Just a 20-minute drive from the city center, coastal Lyttelton makes for an interesting and scenic side trip from Christchurch.

It was here that the first settlers from England arrived on these shores, and on the sloped streets backed by verdant peaks, you’ll find some of the country’s most historic European homes and buildings.

Following the marked heritage route through the township, you’ll tour some of the most important heritage sites while enjoying blissful panoramas over the harbor.

Port of Lyttelton Harbour

To truly appreciate the magnificent mountains which frame Lyttelton, set sail from the town’s port on a catamaran cruise. As you leave the harbor and head towards the deep waters, you can admire one of the most scenic settlements in New Zealand from another angle.

With playful dolphins often spotted in the surrounding waters of Pegasus Bay, and a truly unforgettable coastline, the two-hour trip will leave you with treasured memories.

About Cruising to Christchurch

Editor's Note: Cruise ships have not called at Christchurch since the 2011 earthquake that destroyed its pier. Ships now dock at Akaroa, more than an hour's drive away. A new cruise berth at Lyttelton Port is expected to be rebuilt in time for the 2019-2020 summer season.

Christchurch could qualify as a template for the perfect small city. With a population of around 350,000, it's the largest of New Zealand's South Island cities -- it's also the most English looking in appearance. Unsurprising, when you realise that Christchurch was envisioned as a planned community for the Church of England in the 1850s.

Nearby, the stunning gold and green Canterbury Plains, back-dropped by mountains and with a web of indigo streams, are so familiar that many "The Lord of the Rings" fans now recognise them as Middle Earth.

Visitors to Christchurch don't need to consciously avoid the subject of devastating earthquakes that hit the city between 2010 and 2012. Many reminders remain, but residents are stoically independent, and Kiwis (the people, not the bird) tend to be a positive lot.

Rebuilding began almost immediately but progress was slow. Extensive plans for the next decade or more aim to create an accessible and liveable city. Shops, cafes and bars have returned in force, as have visitors.

Remaining intact, of course, is the languidly winding Avon River, its banks flanked by parks and gardens. Punts still drift along it -- along with their punters in waistcoats and straw boater hats.

As always, the seasons come and go, with spring and autumn each a delight in this leafy city, which is often accurately referred to as the Garden City. Much still remains from the past, and the many new additions to the city are fascinating and well worth seeing.

This small city is home to pretty and serene attractions such as the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, one of the largest parks in the world

Cruise ships must dock at Akaroa, which is more than an hour's drive from Christchurch.

Spend a leisurely day exploring art galleries and parks in endlessly charming Christchurch.

A new $56 million cruise ship berth will be built in Lyttelton, expected to be completed in time for the 2019/2010 season.

Good to Know?

As you should in any travel destination, be aware of your surroundings, and leave all unnecessary valuables onboard in your cabin's safe.

Getting Around?

From Lyttelton to Christchurch: When the port is in operation, most cruise lines offer shuttle service to the centre of Christchurch. From Lyttelton, independent travellers can take one of two public bus routes (numbers 35 and 28) to Christchurch. The bus ride takes about 30 minutes. Taxis are also available.

In Christchurch

On Foot: Christchurch is an easy city to navigate on foot. All of the major attractions are within easy walking distance from Cathedral Square, locally known as the Square, in the heart of the city. Stroll the city's many pedestrian areas, riverfront areas and impressive gardens. Allow time to stop in at the many shops, art galleries, museums, artisan workshops, cafes and restaurants. The Christchurch i-SITE Visitor Centre is located adjacent to Canterbury Museum on Rolleston Avenue and offers free city maps.

By Bus: Metro bus service is available to most suburbs and outlying areas. A station can be found on Lichfield Street.

By Tram: An historic tram does a 17-stop loop throughout the city centre, providing a fun way to get around to see the sights. The tram runs 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. September to March and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April to August.

By Taxi: Taxis, including Blue Star Taxis and First Direct Taxis, all have meters and most accept credit cards.

Currency & Best Way to Get Money?

Currency is the New Zealand dollar. ATMs and foreign exchange offices are abundant in the city centre.

The official language is English. People who have travelled in the north of New Zealand might find the Kiwi accent is not as pronounced in the South Island. Some of this is because of the higher proportion of Scottish and English residents who settled the area.

Where You're Docked?

Many ships anchor and tender to Akaroa, a 1.5-hour drive from Christchurch. However, more ships are calling at Lyttelton (population 3,100), about 20 minutes (eight miles) from Christchurch's city centre. Lyttelton is a working port city with its own character and charm and serves as a commuter community for Christchurch.

What to see in Christchurch

Since 2010, Christchurch has suffered the devastating effects of a series of earthquakes. Not willing to let these natural disasters hinder its spirit, the city has risen from the rubble with determined courage. Coordinated by Canterbury Museum, the Quake City Exhibition is an interactive attraction that details the historic moment the ground shook beneath Christchurch. It is located within the Re:START Mall and tells the powerful stories of those who came to the rescue; it is a tribute to the city’s enduring optimism. A couple of blocks away is the main building of the Canterbury Museum where Egyptian, pre-historic and Māori artefacts offer insight into New Zealand’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

A short walk brings you to the Christchurch Botanic Gardens within Hagley Park, an oasis of calm unscathed by seismic activity. Take a leisurely stroll around kaleidoscopic flowerbeds, pause for thought beneath magnificent trees or follow the meandering loops of the River Avon to exotic greenhouses. At the very edge of the gardens, take a punting tour or hire a row boat from the Edwardian-themed Antigua Boat Sheds for some old-fashioned fun on the water.

Beyond the city centre, you’ll find a variety of interesting sights, including two nature parks in the north. Spot a kiwi bird and explore the Ko Tane Māori village at Willowbank Wildfire Reserve or enjoy an up-close and personal animal encounter at Orana Wildlife Park. At the nearby International Antarctic Centre, embrace a unique opportunity to learn about expeditions to, and the extreme conditions of, this southerly continent. In the south, take a gondola ride to the summit of Mount Cavendish for panoramic views or catch a ferry from the famous Lyttelton Harbour to birdwatch on the historic Quail Island.

Azamara's 16-night New Zealand & Australia Voyage

cruise in christchurch

Tick several Australasian highlights off your list with this one-off 16-night New Zealand & Australia Voyage from Azamara in February 2025 aboard the 702-passenger Azamara Pursuit. Beginning in Auckland, the ship will wind its way around New Zealand before heading to Tasmania (with an overnight stay in Hobart) and up to Melbourne and Sydney. Shore excursions will keep passengers busy during two-plus weeks with only three sea days. Try a trek through Hastings Cave in Tasmania, a dip in a thermal pool in the rainforest or a wine tasting in Waipara Valley.

Who should go: Golf lovers will be especially keen to hop on this cruise, as it's part of Azamara's golf program by PerryGolf. Add this to your booking and get in six rounds throughout the sailing (including at Terrey Hills, Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers). For many travelers, Azamara represents a good value, with included gratuities, drinks and self-service laundry. Fares start at $3,744 per person.

Seabourn's 10-night Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls & Wandjinas cruise

cruise in christchurch

As one of the world's most precious wilderness regions, the Kimberley is home to Precambrian rocks, rugged and diverse landscape with mangroves and savannas, and the oldest living culture in the world. It's no wonder cruises here are highly coveted, as is the case with Seabourn 's 10-night Kimberley expeditions in 2025 .

This itinerary begins in Darwin and each of the nine port stops offers a wide array of excursions designed to deeply entrench passengers into the locale. Many are guided Zodiac expeditions with naturalists to see waterfalls, wildlife and local ways of life.

Who should go: Travelers looking for a luxurious experience in one of the most remote places on the planet will appreciate the 264-passenger all-suite Seabourn Pursuit, the newest expedition vessel in Seabourn's fleet. The yacht-like ship is tricked out with two custom-built submarines, 24 Zodiacs and eight double sea kayaks. The onboard expert Expedition Team helps guide up-close wildlife encounters and cultural experiences, including a visit with local pearl industry farmers and an exploration of the ancient Wandjina-style rock art in Cyclone Cave.

Holland America's 13-night Australia and New Zealand cruise

cruise in christchurch

Holland America 's Australia and New Zealand itinerary offers the best of two countries over the course of two weeks, with two departures in 2025. Leaving from Sydney, the 1,964-passenger Westerdam stops in Melbourne, Australia; Hobart, Tasmania; and Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland, New Zealand. It also spends a day cruising the Fjordland National Park, where you're likely to see seals, dolphins, whales and a rare bird called the flightless takahe.

Notable excursions include a visit to the Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary with koalas, kangaroos and platypus; UNESCO World Heritage site Mt. Field National Park (Tasmania's oldest national park, featuring a eucalyptus rainforest and waterfalls) and the neo-Gothic Larnach castle, with its beautiful gardens.

Who should go: This cruise is a fantastic deal for budget-conscious travelers yearning to journey to the land Down Under — fares start at just $1,159 per person for two weeks, but you'll need to put up with a windowless cabin for 13 nights. Westerdam offers activities and attractions for all ages, including a kids club for children ages 3 to 17, pickleball, trivia contests and live music.

Cunard's 30-night Australia Circumnavigation cruise

cruise in christchurch

Looking for a comprehensive Australia-focused cruise and have time to spare? Try this one-time monthlong itinerary from Cunard aboard the 2,081-passenger Queen Elizabeth in fall 2024. The ship sails round-trip from Sydney to 11 Australia ports and even makes a bonus stop in Bali about halfway through the cruise.

Expect tours of Whitsunday Islands and the stunning sands and turquoise waters of Airlie Beach, a day spent sightseeing in tropical Cairns, a visit to the remote northern shores of Darwin, wildlife sightings in rural Adelaide and marsupial spotting at the Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park. This cruise has several evening departures to make the most of each day in port.

Who should go: With fares starting at $6,039 per person, this cruise isn't inexpensive, but we think it's a solid value for the length of the trip (about $200 per day). Cunard caters to a more sophisticated traveler, one who plays croquet on the Games Deck in between stops, marvels at the entertainment in the Royal Court Theatre, indulges in traditional afternoon tea and dresses up for black-tie gala evenings.

Viking's 14-night Australia & New Zealand cruise

cruise in christchurch

Cruise Australia and New Zealand with Viking for an adults-only voyage with a focus on education and exploration. The 930-passenger Viking Orion and Viking Venus each offer numerous sailings through 2026 .

Your journey begins with two days in Sydney, where you're docked at one of the most beautiful harbors in the world. Next, head to the cultural capital of the country, Melbourne, before moving on to sail through the scenic islands of Bass Straight and dock in Tasmania's capital (Hobart) to view its unusual wildlife.

Once in New Zealand, on the second half of this trip, stops in Christchurch, Wellington, Napier and Auckland showcase this country's most wonderous landmarks. Optional pre- and post-cruise extensions provide a few more days to explore the region since you've already made such a long journey.

Who should go: Viking's ocean ships carry roughly 900 passengers, making them an attractive size for travelers who want a smaller ship experience without sacrificing any of the amenities they love on big ships, including a fitness center, Nordic spa, multiple restaurants and well-appointed cabins. Viking's inclusive pricing is also attractive, with complimentary shore excursions, Wi-Fi, beer and wine, not to mention alternative dining at no extra charge. Fares start at $5,999 per person.

Princess Cruises' 14-night New Zealand sailing

cruise in christchurch

Cruisers who have their sights set mainly on New Zealand will love Princess Cruises ' 14-day itinerary . It begins and ends in Sydney, but the rest of the time is split between exploring numerous New Zealand ports and enjoying relaxing sea days.

Journey to Middle Earth on a Lord of the Rings excursion in Christchurch or take the iconic Wellington cable car up 390 feet to a scenic overlook that'll take your breath away. You can connect with Maori culture in Tauranga, head underground into the Kawiti Caves to see the splendor of thousands of glow worms in Bay of Islands and sip your way along the Auckland Wine Trail.

Who should go: Princess does an exceptional job of making New Zealand accessible to those with a modest budget — fares start at $778 per person. The 3,080-passenger Crown Princess offers several sailings in 2025, with more sailings available through 2026 on the 3,560-passenger Royal Princess and 3,660-passenger Discovery Princess. Youth and teen programs keep traveling kids busy with age-appropriate activities and live animal experiences.

Celebrity's 9-night Australia Wine cruise

cruise in christchurch

Australia is known for many wonderful things, but for many, winemaking tops the list — shiraz dominates the red category, thanks to the climate and soil in the region. Celebrity Cruises offers passengers a perfect pairing with its Australia Wine cruise that runs round-trip from Sydney in December 2024.

In Hobart, Tasmania, explore wine country and treat yourself to some of the best fresh oysters in the world. Adelaide (considered the wine capital of Australia) excursions include a journey into the McLaren Vale or Barossa Valley wine-growing region for a tasting accompanied by lunch. In Melbourne, spend a day with wallabies and wine in the Yarra Valley.

During four days at sea, you can keep the wine flowing with a visit to the Sunset Bar for a glass of your favorite vino while watching the sun dip below the horizon. Or book dinner at Eden Restaurant to enjoy globally influenced dishes that you can pair with your favorite wines from an extensive list.

Who should go: A wine-themed cruise draws the attention of travelers with a more sophisticated palate, and 2,908-passenger Celebrity Edge delivers an equally refined vacation with such amenities as the Magic Carpet (a floating lounge cantilevered above the ocean), an adults-only Solarium and a 25-yard lap pool (the largest in the fleet). With fares starting at $1,099, this sailing might attract younger couples looking for a good value on a shorter sailing.

Norwegian's 12-night Australia & New Zealand: Auckland & Melbourne cruise

cruise in christchurch

While many cruises to this region offer a fair amount of sea days, Norwegian Cruise Line 's Australian & New Zealand: Auckland & Melbourne itinerary maximizes your time on land. You'll visit 10 ports in 12 days for this one-off sailing in 2026, which means the only two sea days land in the middle of the trip, when you're ready for a little relaxation.

Beginning in Auckland, Norwegian Spirit will make its way around New Zealand to Tauranga, Napier, Wellington, Lyttleton and Dunedin. You'll also visit Doubtful Sound, Dusky Sound and Milford Sound -- massive fjords that are home to waterfalls, marine life and lush rainforest. The first Australian stop is Melbourne, followed by Eden and Sydney. From Lord of the Rings tours and four-wheel safaris to gondola rides and a visit to a Maori tribe's fortified settlement, the excursion options are well rounded with options for all tastes.

Who should go : The 2,032-passenger Norwegian Spirit will attract those looking for a ship with a modern vibe, as it was remodeled in 2022.
