My whole world changed when I stepped inside the academy. Nothing is right about this place or the other students in it. Here I am, a mere mortal among gods...or monsters. I still can't decide which of these warring factions I belong to, if I belong at all. I only know the one thing that unites them is their hatred of me.

Then there's Jaxon Vega. A vampire with deadly secrets who hasn't felt anything for a hundred years. But there's something about him that calls to me, something broken in him that somehow fits with what's broken in me.

Which could spell death for us all.

Because Jaxon walled himself off for a reason. And now someone wants to wake a sleeping monster, and I'm wondering if I was brought here intentionally—as the bait.

Tracy Wolff is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of sixty-four novels that run the gamut from young adult action adventures to new adult romance and from women’s fiction to erotica. A long-time lover of vampires, dragons and all things that go bump in the night, Tracy loves nothing more than combining her affection for paranormal creatures with her love of writing tortured heroes and kick-butt heroines. When she’s not writing (which is a rare occurrence), she can be found trying out new recipes, offering make-up tips online, wandering comic book/gaming stores with her sons, and watching movies or plotting stories with her besties. A one time English professor, she now writes full-time from her home in Austin, Texas, which she shares with her family. She also writes as Tracy Deebs and Tessa Adams.

Crave (Breakdown) (SPOILERS)

Welcome to the 1st of a series of in-depth reviews about NYT Bestseller Tracy Wolff’s Crave series. Released in 2020 by Entangled Teen Publishing, this YA paranormal fantasy has swept the world and brought back the love we all had for paranormal romance in 2008 a la Stephanie Meyer.

Synopsis: My whole world changed when I stepped inside the academy. Nothing is right about this place or the other students in it. Here I am, a mere mortal among gods…or monsters. I still can’t decide which of these warring factions I belong to, if I belong at all. I only know the one thing that unites them is their hatred of me. Then there’s Jaxon Vega. A vampire with deadly secrets who hasn’t felt anything for a hundred years. But there’s something about him that calls to me, something broken in him that somehow fits with what’s broken in me. Which could spell death for us all. Because Jaxon walled himself off for a reason. And now someone wants to wake a sleeping monster, and I’m wondering if I was brought here intentionally—as the bait. synopsis from goodreads page

Our MC is Grace: recent Alaska transplant who’s parents have just passed away…truly unfortunate start for our girl. She is taken in by her uncle Finn and his daughter Macy who also serve as the principal of the school Grace is to be enrolled in and Grace’s new bestie/tour guide, respectively. As with any good YA protagonist, New Girl Grace is the talk of the school. Well her, and resident mysterious bad boy Jaxon Vega. Tall, brooding, and handsome, Jaxon Vega is not to be messed with or even thought about. He’s all bad.

SEE'S THE NEW GIRL at school* - Willy Wonka | Meme Generator

That’s fine with Grace, she just wants to survive junior year, get through senior year, and graduate so she can go back to California and be with her best friend, Heather, as they make up for lost time. But, of course, this is a book, and Grace is our MC, so there’s certain to be hijinks and hilarity between her and her goal of graduating.

Macy Grace’s cousin, roommate, and guide to the new place that is Alaska. Always down for a good crying session ended by a splitting a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream. Honestly, 10/10 for the “best friend” / “constant anchor” character.

Flint Ah yes, sweet Flint. The first person, aside from Macy, that takes a real liking to Grace. He is a goofy fun-loving kind of guy…but with something darker hidden too.

Lia A witch, like Macy but M doesn’t like Lia, which should warn Grace that something hanky is going on but alas…

Jaxon The man of the hour. Vampire prince. Seriously damaged, but is trying to work through his issues.

Unknown Big Bad We later learn who this person is, but until then, they’ll be known as UBB. Has the grand plan to take over the world and ruin all sorts of things.

The beginning of the book is full of a lot of day-to-day activity of Grace getting used to Katmere, and Katmere getting used to the presence of an (apparently) extremely attractive person. The middle is pretty filler-y too…UNTIL ITS NOT.

I guess she's pretty..." "Try SUPER MEGA-FOXY AWESOME HOT" | Very potter musical, Starkid, Quotes

Okay, so turns out that Lia is actually working to bring the UBB back into power. This UBB is so bad and powerful that even Jaxon is afraid of them resurfacing. He now makes it his personal mission to keep Grace safe from Lia because….

The Mating Bond - Moe - Wattpad

…yes. You heard correctly. A mating bond. Destiny. An unknown but completely unavoidable something drawing these two together. As basic as breathing, and yet just as complex.

More filler, but, Grace & Jaxon are a couple now! She somehow still doesn’t know his biggest secret, and doesn’t think its weird that he never comes in her room when he drops her off after class, but oh well! Also, he seems to appear and vanish faster than HUMANLY possible, but that’s just because he’s in great shape, right?

Somebody's gotta tell her Don't you dare! - frozen gonna tell him | Meme Generator

After receiving the most telling book from Jaxon (a copy of Meyer’s Twilight ), Grace finally puts things together. Everything is out in the open now, no more secrets. Despite all of Jaxon’s careful planning and surrounding her with his cronies [The Order, as they’re called], Lia still manages to get her hooks in Grace — via Flint. The big dragon has gained her trust, and eventually lures her to her death via sacrifice. Of course, Jaxon comes swooping in to save the day, but ends up getting himself knocked out by fighting with a GIANT FREAKING DRAGON. Anyway, Lia does some magic and things, and brings the UBB back to this side of the veil between life and death. The plan was for him to be placed into Jaxon’s body, but since he’s incapacitated, and Flint suddenly grew a conscience to stop Lia’s plans, the UBB attaches himself to the only other living thing in room.

Who is the UBB you may ask? Why does Jaxon hate the UBB so much? What makes the UBB so dangerous? Well….even paranormals have sibling rivalry.

Overall, Crave is an amazing opener to a new YA paranormal series. Tracy’s writing is fluid, lively, and full of spunk and witty humor. Grace is a likeable MC and Macy is her faithful sidekick. I have read the next 2 books in the series, and I am very much excited for the final installment!

BOOK REVIEW: Crave (Crave #1) by Tracy Wolff

When exactly did I become the heroine in some YA romance? The new girl swooning over the hottest, most unattainable boy in school? Gross. And so not happening.

She, more than once, used very modern terms and had a very modern ‘speaking in text’ manner but, in the end, I enjoyed it for that. It was quick. It was easy. And I didn’t take it too seriously.

“Have you ever wanted something so much that you were afraid to take it?” “Yes.” He nods. “Like it’s right there, waiting for you to just reach out and grab it, but you’re so terrified of what will happen when you lose it that you never make the reach?” “Yes,” he says again, his voice low and deep and comforting in a way that burrows inside me. I tilt my head up until our eyes meet, and then I whisper, “What did you do?” For long seconds, he doesn’t say anything. He doesn’t do anything. He just stares back at me with a look in his eyes as scarred and broken as the rest of him. And says, “I decided to take it anyway.”

And then I did . Stupid. Stupid. STUPID. Me. It was still ‘all in fun’, then when I checked book two to see if I wanted to continue right away or wait a moment and finish other things I wanted to read, I saw the ultimate author betrayal. For those wondering, I’ll make it real simple and real clear: THE AUTHOR PULLS A MIX OF SARAH J. MAAS AND TAREHEH MAFI If that’s not clear…I cannot help you. Either way, I was bamboozled and I can’t say I feel like doing a singular review because what’s the point? I don’t recommend. I won’t be able to read on because I just…can’t….after I fall for something.

It’s pretty obvious Jaxon is the villain of his own story. I just wish I knew why.

It stopped being fun and looked fondly upon when I found out my guy will go through heartbreak -a fun trash read to read on the side or no, my heart still gets invested with love interests, period . Some things never change, and I’m nothing if not transparent. The fun peril was there, the longing of young love was there, and-a completely added bonus I literally NEVER get and wanted to savor- the blood sucking was there . Sorry not sorry, I’m a trashy bitch (ie Cody Rigsby)-I like that, alright?? Why else would I like vampires, puh- lease .

Jaxon, on the other hand… If he lies to me, you’d better believe I’m going to stake him through his fangy black heart. And yes, I know that makes no sense. I just don’t happen to care at this exact moment.

So, yes, I rated it fairly and used what I think I was going to rate it before my heart was broken in reviews for the next books, because I really had a very fun time and this kept me from going into a slump [even though I want to throw it into a dumpster of fire, dumpster fire book as it is]. Jaxon is awesome, typical, broody, protective, sweet, fierce, and vulnerable-your average YA paranormal hero, but he’s perfect and exactly what you crave (har) when you knowingly pick up a novel such as this. You get what you come for, Twilight rip off or not. Shame-I’d have loved to see what overly dramatic scenes come my way in its predecessors. Cheesy. Predictable. Delectable. End of story. For me, anyway. FRIEND SCALE: Arielle -Since you’re a simp for SJM I assume you’d be fine *eyeroll* Cassie – Nah. Jen – I think you damn well know the answer to this lol Anna – Nope haha, but you knew that already View all my reviews

Well….depends if you like SJM style or not. As in….love interests. I. DO. NOT.

SO that really decided it all for me. I liked this book a lot-end of story. But I saw things south in reviews (for me) and I just couldn’t commit to that. It always angers me to no end. I’m sure you might enjoy!!!

Robert Pattinson says he struggled with Twilight fame

Universal have already bought rights to adapt Tracy Wolff's novel, Crave, into a movie.

The final film in the Twilight franchise may have come out almost eight years ago but a new teen vampire movie is on its way.

Ever since we bid goodbye to Twilight in 2012 (literally, in our hearts it lives on forever), people have been desperate for there to be more. Robert Pattinson may not have the fondest things to say about the movies or the books, but millions of fans, who read and watched the series, have been begging Stephanie Meyer to write a followup to 'Breaking Dawn' or even a spinoff.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Universal have picked up best-selling author Tracy Wolff's upcoming novel, Crave , for a movie adaptation ahead of its book release, because they are so confident in the story. According to Entangled Publishing’s Liz Pelletier, Crave is "vampires for a new generation" and it has the potential to become as big as the Twilight franchise.

What is Crave about though? Well, it's being described as "a paranormal fantasy about a human girl who finds herself at the centre of conflict between many warring factions when she falls for a vampire prince." Edward may not have been a prince, but the story of girl meets vampire is certainly familiar, and the black, red and white book cover is very Twilight esque.

There's one key detail that looks set to set Crave apart from Twilight though. Liz states that it will be told from a "decidedly feminist perspective." Given that Twilight was panned by many feminist critics for Bella's storyline, it will be interesting to see how Crave compares.

Crave Summary, Characters and Themes | Tracy Wolff

“Crave” by Tracy Wolff is a Young Adult paranormal romance novel, first published in 2020.

The story unfolds through the eyes of Grace Foster, a 17-year-old girl from San Diego, California, whose life takes a dramatic turn following the tragic death of her parents in a car accident.

Sent to live with her Uncle Finn and cousin Macy in the remote wilderness of Fairbanks, Alaska, Grace finds herself at Katmere Academy, a Gothic castle school shrouded in mystery and overseen by her uncle, the headmaster.

Grace is immediately struck by the eerie beauty of the Alaskan wilds and the imposing architecture of Katmere Academy.

However, she can’t shake off the feeling that something is amiss. Her first evening at the school only deepens this suspicion when she encounters Jaxon Vega, a mesmerizing yet rude student who warns her of the school’s dangers and urges her to leave.

Unbeknownst to Grace, Jaxon is not just any student—he is the most powerful vampire in the academy.

Despite the warning, Grace’s life at Katmere Academy grows increasingly perilous. She survives a frightening attack by two boys, only to be saved by an unknown savior, later revealed to be Jaxon.

As she navigates various challenges, including altitude sickness and a snowball fight gone wrong, Grace is supported by her friends Macy and Flint, who help her acclimate to the school’s unique social dynamics, dominated by cliques like The Order, a group of students dressed in black and led by Jaxon.

Intrigue deepens as Grace discovers the library and meets Lia, who is immersed in a mysterious book.

Over tea, Lia reveals her connection to Jaxon—she was the girlfriend of his late brother, Hudson. As Grace and Lia bond over shared grief, Grace begins to piece together the puzzle of Katmere Academy.

She realizes that Jaxon is a vampire and that the school is a haven for the supernatural, with students who are witches, dragons, wolf-shifters, and vampires.

Grace’s relationship with Jaxon evolves, and despite his cold exterior, he shows a surprising care for her.

This connection is tested when Grace narrowly escapes death in the cafeteria, leading Jaxon to confront a pack of werewolves he suspects are behind the attack.

In a display of raw power and protectiveness, Jaxon nearly kills the lead werewolf, only stopping at Grace’s plea. This incident, far from driving Grace away, draws her closer to Jaxon.

The plot thickens as Jaxon reveals the dark history of his family. His brother, Hudson, had sought to dominate all supernatural beings, leading to his death at Jaxon’s hands.

This act of fratricide left Jaxon scarred, both physically and emotionally, and set him on a path to become the next Vampire King.

Tensions escalate when Grace is poisoned by tea provided by Lia, leading to her capture. In the catacombs beneath the school, Grace learns of Lia’s plan to resurrect Hudson using her as a sacrificial pawn.

In a dramatic confrontation, Jaxon, now in his dragon form, and other dragons attempt to kill Grace to prevent Hudson’s return. However, Jaxon, fueled by Grace’s blood, manages to thwart Lia’s plans.

In a shocking twist, Hudson’s spirit appears, threatening Jaxon.

Grace, driven by a newfound power, transforms into a gargoyle to protect him, sacrificing her human form. As the novel concludes, Grace, now a stone gargoyle, is taken to the infirmary, with Uncle Finn and Jaxon vowing to find a way to restore her.

Crave by Tracy Wolff Summary

Grace Foster

Grace is the 17-year-old protagonist of “Crave.” She moves from San Diego to Alaska to live with her uncle and cousin at Katmere Academy after the death of her parents. Grace is resilient, curious, and brave, adapting to the supernatural world of the academy while uncovering its secrets. She develops a deep connection with Jaxon Vega and plays a crucial role in the conflicts at Katmere.

Jaxon, a powerful vampire and student at Katmere Academy, initially comes off as cold and intimidating. He warns Grace about the dangers of the school. As the story progresses, Jaxon reveals a more caring and protective side, especially towards Grace. He struggles with his past and his role as the future Vampire King.

Uncle Finn is Grace’s uncle and the headmaster of Katmere Academy. He is a key figure in Grace’s life after her parents’ death. As the headmaster, he is responsible for maintaining order in the school and plays a pivotal role in the supernatural community.

Macy is Grace’s cousin and one of her first friends at Katmere Academy. She helps Grace adjust to life at the academy and is an essential source of support and information about the supernatural world.

Flint is one of Grace’s friends at Katmere Academy. He is revealed to be a dragon, showcasing the diversity of supernatural beings at the school. Flint is known for his humor and easygoing nature, providing a contrast to the more intense characters like Jaxon.

Lia is a student at Katmere Academy and the former girlfriend of Jaxon’s deceased brother, Hudson. She plays a complex role in the story, initially befriending Grace but later revealing more sinister motives related to the resurrection of Hudson.

Hudson Vega

Although deceased, Hudson Vega, Jaxon’s brother, plays a significant role in the novel’s backstory. His desire for power and control over the supernatural beings caused a rift at Katmere Academy, leading to his death at Jaxon’s hands. Hudson’s legacy impacts the events of the story and the relationships between characters.

1. The Complexity of Grief and Loss

At its core, “Crave” is a poignant exploration of how individuals cope with grief and loss.

Grace’s journey begins in the aftermath of her parents’ tragic death, thrusting her into a world where she must navigate her sorrow while adapting to an entirely new and daunting environment .

The theme of loss is further mirrored in Lia’s character, who is grappling with the death of Hudson, her boyfriend.

This shared experience of loss creates a bond between Grace and Lia, emphasizing the universality of grief and the varied ways individuals process it. The novel portrays grief not just as a journey of pain, but also as a catalyst for growth and self-discovery.

2. The Dichotomy of Belonging and Otherness

Throughout the novel, Grace’s struggle with the sense of belonging in a world that is starkly different from her previous life in San Diego is a central theme.

Katmere Academy is a melting pot of supernatural beings, and Grace, being the only human, epitomizes otherness. This theme is skillfully woven into the narrative, as Grace navigates the complex social hierarchies and unspoken rules of this new world.

Her journey from feeling like an outsider to finding her place – not just in the school, but within the supernatural community – speaks to the broader experience of adapting to new environments and the human need for connection and belonging.

3. The Nature of Power and Responsibility

The theme of power and its accompanying responsibilities is another cornerstone of the novel.

Jaxon’s character embodies this theme as he grapples with his emerging role as the Vampire King, burdened by the responsibilities and expectations it entails. His struggle is contrasted with the story of his brother, Hudson, whose misuse of power led to catastrophic consequences.

The novel explores the ethical dimensions of power – how it can be used for both good and harm, and the importance of responsibility and self-control.

This theme is also reflected in Grace’s character development, as she discovers her own hidden powers and the responsibilities that come with them.

Final Thoughts

“Crave” is a compelling blend of romance, fantasy , and adventure .

Tracy Wolff masterfully crafts a narrative that not only explores the complexities of love and grief but also delves into the intriguing dynamics of a supernatural world. The novel excels in building a gothic atmosphere, complete with a mysterious boarding school and a diverse cast of characters.

Grace’s journey from a grieving teenager to a strong individual entangled in a supernatural romance is engaging and emotionally resonant. The book’s blend of suspense , mystical elements, and character development makes it a captivating read for fans of young adult paranormal romance.

No one survived the last battle unscathed. Flint is angry at the world, Jaxon is turning into something I don't recognize, and Hudson has put up a wall I'm not sure I'll ever break through. Now war is coming, and we're not ready. We're going to need an army to have any hope of winning. But first, there are questions about my ancestors that need answers. Answers that might just reveal who the real monster is among us. And that's saying something in a world filled with bloodthirsty vampires, immortal gargoyles, and an ancient battle between two gods.

After Katmere, I shouldn't be surprised by anything. Including the existence of a world beyond my world called the Shadow Realm. Yet here I am, stuck in a strange, dangerous place with the worst of the supernaturals, the monster that other monsters fear: Hudson Vega. He might be Jaxon's brother and ridiculously hot, but he's a complete bona fide pain in my ass. The question is whether we'll find a way out before I kill him...or run out of time.

Now everything is falling apart. The Vampire Court has no king, the Dragon Court has no heart, and the Gargoyle Court has me—a teenager in way over her head. And it's the worst possible timing, because a threat is brewing just as the Circle is collapsing. I have no choice but to return to the Shadow Realm and face the terrifying queen who nearly ended us . . . and make a deal with her to save Mekhi.

Crave Book Review: Another YA vampire book to sink your teeth into

Crave Book review - just like Gilmore Girls

I will be honest and say I was very nervous to dive into Crave . I am 100% obsessed with all things vampires and when I saw the cover I was immediately drawn to it. But…it’s basically just Twilight right? I mean, the book could literally sit right next to my Twilight books on my bookcase and say “hey, I’m the next book in the Twilight saga” and not one of those books would blink an eye.

I’m thinking the cover choice was a marketing ploy to lure all of the unsuspecting Twilight fans to their next great Vampire obsession. It totally worked. My question was: would it live up to the hype?

Crave Book Review

Crave book review - Just like Gilmore Girls

First, let’s give a quick one or two sentence synopsis so we are all on the same page. Grace’s parent’s die in a car crash and she moves to Alaska to live in a boarding school with her cousin. Turns out the boarding school houses a bunch of seemingly supernatural creatures and Grace isn’t sure how or where she fits in. And of course, everyone in the school wants a piece of Grace…in one way or another. Insert Jaxon Vega, a vampire??? Who is of course in love with Grace immediately, but warns her that she needs to stay away from him for her own good. Sound familiar????

Now I will provide some of my initial reactions and thoughts as I read Crave:

  • The beginning is boring…
  • Why does the author use the phrase “AF” so much?!?!? Everything is AF…The men are all sexy AF, and the situations are all Intense AF, and to be honest…it was a bit frustrating AF. If you know what I mean.
  • Insta love is strong here.
  • They actually acknowledge the Twilight comparisons
  • Jaxon is no Edward Cullen
  • The ending…what the heck just happened?!?!

So let’s address some of the above topics:

I wasn’t properly entertained and invested in the book until about 1/4 – 1/2 way through the book. The beginning felt cheesy and for lack of a better word…boring. I wasn’t invested in any of the characters and I wasn’t really sure if I cared about finding out the mystery that surrounded the school. But, about half way through I started enjoying it more. The book is super easy to speed read through and once the author starts purposefully comparing the book and characters to Twilight it honestly gets kind of fun.

I still stand by my belief that the author uses the phrase “AF” way too much but readers who have gone on to read the rest of the series assure me this stops in the next book. Evidently the characters graduate into real cursing at that point. Jury is out on whether that will make it any better though.

Moving on to discuss the insta love attraction in the book. This is never one of my favorite love tropes but honestly, this is what we have all come to expect from Vampire romances. The curmudgeon vampire hates everyone but one day he runs into the girl of his dreams and BAM, just like that they are madly in love. I don’t make the rules, I just follow them, and that is the number one vampire romance rule. It’s fate, and I actually quite enjoy the fated love trope so I’m not mad about it.

This leads me to the comment of “Jaxon is no Edward Cullen ”. This is truth. If there are any diehard Jaxon Vega fans out there then I give my heartfelt apologies but, he ain’t no Edward. This is not all a bad thing. I personally still love book Edward, I know that he is a creepy old man stalking a teenager and is super controlling but…this is fiction not real life. Evidently, I am ok with controlling stalkers as long as they come in the vampire variety.

Put down the pitchforks! I know this sounds bad, but I promise it just extends to Vampires. I have now come to accept there is no vampire soulmate waiting out there for me in the darkness so I won’t have to worry about my bad taste in vampires IRL.

But back to the matter at hand, Jaxon. He simply does not possess the swoon factor for me. He is cheeky and clever though, so I will give him that.

And now onto the ending! (Insert mind exploding emoji here) I can’t say anything about this without spoiling it but I legit did not see that twist coming AT ALL. There were things that I speculated about, but I was way off the mark in the execution of it all. That’s all I will say without spoiling it!

All in all, It’s not my favorite book but after the initial 100 or so pages I was entertained, and it spoke to the piece inside me that secretly likes angst ridden novels with teenage insta love triangles. If you are feeling the need to feed that piece inside yourself too then give Crave a try.

Opinion columnists | the most shameful law florida passed this year | scott maxwell.

crave book tour

Still, every once in a while, politicians do something so bad, even they try to hide from their own acts.

This past legislative session, that something was a new law that makes it illegal for Florida counties to guarantee basic workplace safety for outdoor workers who toil in extreme heat — like providing shade and water.

This is the kind of stuff most people would provide for dogs.

Scott Maxwell, Sentinel columnist: Panthers 35, Broncos 20. Cam Newton is drawn to the end zone like a zombie to brains. He always finds a way to plow through other bodies to get there. Plus, Luke Kuechly makes the big plays when needed. I think Carolina wins its first title.

We’re talking about water breaks in 100-degree heat. And momentary shade for roofers and farmhands.

A few counties had started talking about mandating such things — around the same time a Parkland farm worker was found dead in a ditch from heat exhaustion.

But Florida businesses — led by the Florida Chamber of Commerce, which is funded by companies like Publix, U.S. Sugar, Disney and Florida Power & Light — didn’t want to be bothered with new regulations. Even those meant to keep workers safe or even alive.

So their lobbyists pushed a bill that would make such safety rules illegal. Aside from water and shade, the law also bans local rules requiring employers to offer “appropriate first-aid measures or emergency responses related to heat exposure.”

Yeah, they targeted first aid.

GOP legislators knew this bill looked heinous. So first of all, they cut off testimony for citizens who had traveled across the state to talk about how nasty it was. Then they waited until the last day of the session to pass it.

Most significantly, though, Gov. Ron DeSantis hid behind closed doors when signing House Bill 433 into law.

DeSantis normally craves attention the way zombies crave brains. He likes to livestream his bill-signings surrounded by children, Moms for Liberty and staffers who applaud on cue.

But here, there was no press conference. No big, tough declarations about how Florida is doing things differently than the rest of America.

Because, really, what could he say?  Here in Florida, we aren’t doing crazy things like ensuring tomato pickers have access to drinking water!

I’ve watched Florida lawmakers pass a lot of bad bills. But I can’t recall one more cruel. Even the normally shameless politicians knew it and wanted to hide. But you deserve to know who they are.

The bill passed mostyl along party lines. In the Senate , it was supported by South Florida Republican Bryan Avila , despite the fact that his fellow Miami Republicans — Alexis Calatayud, Ileana Garcia and Ana Maria Rodroguez — all voted no.  In the House , the bill meant to ensure that workers couldn’t be guaranteed shade, water or first aid received yes votes from South Florida Republicans Fabián Basabe , David Borrero , Demi Busatta Cabrera , Mike Caruso , Tom Fabricio , Alina Garcia , Peggy Gossett-Seidman , Chip LaMarca , Daniel Perez , Juan Carlos Porras , Mike Redondo , Alex Rizo and Rick Roth .

Many consider themselves people of faith. I’d be curious to hear these folks explain their support to their spiritual leaders.

Florida physicians also decried the legislation as dangerous.

Honestly, I don’t think anyone runs for public office hoping to deny low-wage laborers access to shade on a scorching hot day. Instead, they were pressured by Florida’s big-business lobby. And they happily complied, knowing that campaign checks and endorsements were on the line.

Chamber Vice President Carolyn Johnson warned lawmakers in an email that their votes on this issue would not only be documented in the group’s “How They Voted” report card, but counted twice.

So GOP lawmakers dutifully adopted the chamber’s talking points with a goal of distracting the public from what the bill actually said — that local governments can’t guarantee “water consumption,” “cooling measures” or even “appropriate first-aid measures.” Backers instead said they simply wanted to avoid a “patchwork” of different regulations in different cities and counties.

Apparently business owners aren’t capable of complying with different laws in different places — or understanding why heat protection might be more important in, say, South Florida than North Florida.

Their arguments were, of course, garbage.

The chamber and other business groups — including Associated Industries and the Florida Home Builders Association — didn’t want to block heat-protection rules that varied from one place to another. They wanted to block heat-protection rules altogether.

We know this because Florida could have enacted statewide safety guidelines. But lawmakers refused. And the business lobby wasn’t about to tolerate local officials pushing for humane work conditions either.

The lobbyists also claimed most businesses already provided workers with heat protections in accordance with federal laws. Yet here they were, frantically opposing regulations they claimed to already have in place.

The Orlando Weekly cited a text message that a construction-industry lobbyist sent House Speaker Paul Renner’s office at 9:10 p.m. before the session’s final day, saying: “I haven’t texted you in weeks–HEAT cannot die. The entire business community is in lockstep on this.”

That’s one helluva top priority for this state’s “entire business community” — ensuring that the workers who build houses, mow lawns and harvest crops aren’t guaranteed drinking water.

A massive expansion of school vouchers has resulted in billions of your taxpayer dollars going to schools with zero state oversight. Florida must require data for dollars. Schools that accept vouchers must open the books.

Florida's Environmental Regulation Commission hasn’t met in 7 years, writes Orlando Sentinel columnist Scott Maxwell. The state spends billions on cleanup. Gov. Ron DeSantis just announced another $1.5 billion. It'd be better to concentrate on prevention over mitigation.

2-time James Beard Book Award finalist rescues food staples of yesteryear

portrait of david shields

Not unlike those fictional Jurassic Park scientists who somehow coaxed dinosaurs back from extinction using DNA sampling, USC Carolina Distinguished Professor David S. Shields is rediscovering long-lost legacy seed collections and bringing them back into cultivation. For real. And the bottom line is taste.

The author of dozens of books on a variety of historic topics, Shields recently was named a finalist for the James Beard Book Award in the category of Reference, History, and Scholarship. His co-author on the nominated project, The Ark of Taste , is Portland gastronomy scholar Giselle Kennedy. Beard award winners will be announced June 9 in Chicago.

Working with geneticists and growers worldwide, Shields has long been on a mission to save heritage foods from extinction. In so doing, he has delighted serious foodies who are bent on preserving rich flavors from ingredients that are unavailable or difficult to find.

It’s not enough to have centuries-old recipes. They simply won’t work without the original, locally sourced ingredients. “All they have is the formula, and the original ingredients that made the thing taste good are gone,” Shields told an interviewer in 2016.

book cover with drawings of food and the words the ark of taste and

This is the second time Shields, a professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been a Beard finalist. In 2018, his book, The Culinarians: Lives and Careers from the First Age of American Fine Dining , was a Beard finalist as well. Since beginning his lengthy culinary scholarship, Shields has been named chair of the Carolina Gold Rice Foundation, which is dedicated to sustainably preserving the origins of local culinary heritage.

One reason heirloom ingredients fall out of circulation while the recipes survive, Shields noted, is that the recipes are passed down verbally through generations, but there often has been no formal documentation of the original ingredients or managed conservation of genetically pure seed stocks. The struggle is real for a man who reads old agricultural journals for fun.

Specific food crops Shields has helped rejuvenate include Cocke’s Prolific Corn, Benne, or sesame seeds, (who doesn’t love Charleston Benne Wafers?), Sea Island White Flint Corn, and the Bradford Watermelon. While he continues to rescue hidden seed stashes of heirloom grains and vegetables, Shields acknowledges the imperative of supporting agricultural biodiversity that is vulnerable to industrialization and climate change. Genuine flavor, however, is a key motivator in his work.

“I’m basically known as the flavor saver,” he said, “the person who goes out to hunt ingredients down and gets people to grow them and chefs to use them.”

Explore City Tours celebrates anniversary with new name, expansion to Akron & Wooster

Owner Barb Abbott is celebrating her 12th anniversary of Canton Food Tours with a name rebranding and expansion as Explore City Tours. The tours now include stops in Wooster and Akron.

Barb Abbott has always been fueled by her love of the outdoors, parks and diverse cuisine.

The creator of Canton Food Tours has rebranded her popular food exploration business as Explore City Tours .

And she is marking her 12th anniversary with expansion. Her tour stops now go beyond Stark County's borders into Wooster and Akron.

Abbott, a native of Akron and a resident of Jackson Township for over two decades, has long embraced her passion for community engagement.

After getting a degree in biology from the University of Akron, she became a park naturalist at Quail Hollow Park in Lake Township near Hartville. She often had an owl on her arm as she explained the wildlife offerings at the park.

It provided the perfect platform to refine her skills in interpretation, helping to create memorable adventures for visitors for 13 years.

However, it was a transformative food tour experience in Scottsdale, Arizona, that ignited Abbott's vision to bring similar immersive experiences to the Canton community.

Canton Food Tours becomes Explore City Tours

Some of the best: Eat your way through Stark County at these 11 area restaurants chosen by foodies

On May 9, 2012, Canton Food Tours opened, offering an exploration of the city's culinary delights and history.

Abbott's philosophy is simple: “Knowledge and passion can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.”

Abbott and her tour guides help clients uncover new experiences, perhaps places they didn't know existed.

“I make it fun. The city is my stage, and as we are walking you through it, you are the actor. You are part of the show,” she said.

Abbott remains dedicated to creating memorable experiences. Under the rebranded umbrella, her company has expanded its horizons beyond food-centric excursions.

Tony Ly, owner of Basil Asian Bistro, a longstanding collaborator, attested to Abbott's role in elevating Canton's food profile.

"It has been a privilege to work with Barb as one of her restaurant partners for the last decade," he said. "It sounds unbelievable when I say it out loud — a decade? When Barb had approached me about joining the tours, I thought, 'Wow, only big cities do that.'"

Based on 265 reviews, the tours are rated excellent on Tripadvisor.

Exploring Akron and Wooster's history and food offerings

So why expand into Akron and Wooster?

“Growing up in Akron, tours there are a natural transition for my company,” Abbott said.

She wants to remind everyone that Akron, once known as the Rubber Capital of the World, is steeped in history and innovation. There are four distinct tours being offered in Akron, both afternoon and evening.

Ice cream and more: 2 Scoopz to open for season in downtown Canton

These three-hour walking tours feature food stops, art and culture through some of the oldest blocks in Akron. The Akron Art Museum, The Nightlight Cinema, BLU-Tique hotel are among the stops. Small plate samplings can include Akronym Brewing Co., Heera, Chameleon Café and The 1 Food & Spirits.

Two Akron Canalway Food Tours feature canal history, Locks 1 and 2, the Civic Theatre and more lively conversation about Akron’s history. Small plates to eat and drink on these tours include The Daily Pressed, Cilantro Thai and Sushi and Eddie’s Famous Cheesesteaks & Grille.

The former Akron Savings and Loan building that now houses the restaurant Crave has a special meaning for Abbott.

“My dad, attorney Claude M. Fiocca, had his law offices there while he served in the Ohio House of Representatives (40th District) for eight years during the 1970s. He gave me my love of history, the community, and public speaking,” Abbott said.

In Wooster, Abbott offers visitors a glimpse into its Amish heritage and culinary delights. Tours highlight the city’s architecture and take a circular route through Wooster’s public square. Participants learn about The Scots and Revolutionary War roots, all while stopping to sample small plates from an average of four eateries that include Spoon Market, Basil Asian Bistro, Tulipan Pastry & Coffee Shop and The City Square Steakhouse.

Canton tours are still ongoing and celebrate the city’s NFL history, iconic landmarks and culinary delights.

Christopher Goff, president and CEO of Employers Health, was eager to share his experience with Abbott's offerings.

“Explore City Tours provides a great corporate team-building experience that allows colleagues to bond over a unique walking experience that mixes a history lesson with a local culinary adventure," he said. "She brings enthusiasm and subject matter expertise that my colleagues often reminisce when recalling their favorite Employers Health First Friday events — something we do as a company each month as a fun team building experience or a community service project.”

Goff also takes out-of-town family members on food tours when they visit Canton.

"My wife and I travel frequently throughout Europe and almost always include a food tour to increase our knowledge of the city’s culture, history and culinary offerings," he said. "With the tours that (Abbott) provides, one doesn’t need to travel across the ocean to take advantage of such a memorable and rich experience.”
