ALBUM REVIEW: A Voyage Through Time – Voyager

An extraordinary experience curated by the fans, performed for the fans, is finally reaching a worldwide release. Progressive metalheads VOYAGER are bringing A Voyage Through Time to physical and digital release, and it’s a journey of a lifetime. The Perth outfit recorded the show back in August 2021 at their hometown’s Magnet House . Only airing it once the following month, the band are now opening the experience to anyone and everyone. Summarising two decades of success within a 16-track fan-voted setlist, this is a show that will send the listener on an adventure through space, time, and all dimensions in the known universe. Prepare for liftoff.

The set begins appropriately with To The Morning Light ; taken from the band’s 2003 debut record Element V . It’s a strong opening tune, with vocalist Daniel Estrin welcoming the listener to the titular voyage as the track starts before fully entering the swing of things. As an event that is meant to showcase the band’s collective career, it proves that even after over 20 years of making music, they can still take it back a few steps and bask in their own nostalgia.

As the five-piece play on, the LP plays less as a live recording and more as a metal-laced opera. A story being told through guitar shreds, melodic singing and emotionally gripping growls. There are ups and downs, spins and roundabouts and missing even one beat would throw one off track. Nearing the halfway mark is where they start touching upon their third studio record I Am The Revolution . This is where the drama and tension grows; this is where everyone is in too deep to stop and even take a break. Estrin asks partway during the track, “ Do we need more? ” – no matter the context for that question, the answer for VOYAGER is always an overwhelming yes.

The set appropriately closes off with Brightstar and Runaway , two of the band’s most recent hits. Taken from their last studio release, 2019’s Colours In The Sun , the cycle is completed and the retrospective is winding down with eyes wide open and ears full of electronic beats and fascinating harmonies.

In more modern times, the Australian collective are known for putting more power pop elements into their work. It’s how it goes with many heavy bands: they will grow, adapt, change, alter – however they wish to label their music from one era to another. VOYAGER have managed to pull this off through the years – Brightstar would never dare appear within Element V . Thank goodness it didn’t, but also thank goodness it appeared when it needed to, when the time was right. They knew what they were doing.

A Voyage Through Time plays as a science fiction tale being told through an escalation of melodies, set in a time where the world was in true turmoil and uncertainty. Looking back on it, it’s more fiction than fact but that should not be forgotten. Being released at a better time for the band and for the world, it can be appreciated for what it is. VOYAGER ‘s very own autobiography, from birth through growth to their current point. And there is no end in sight. Here’s to a fantastic voyage.

Since their 1999 formation, whatever genre norms, boundaries and regulations thrust upon Perth, Australia’s Voyager have been smashed. They embrace, if not brandish pop; employ a keytar on stage, and, bring forward a positive, if not uplifting feeling to their music, running head-first into the endless parade of heavy bands who see the world in a different light. It’s perhaps why the title of their seventh full-length and first for Season of Mist,  Colours in the Sun,  is apropos: Voyager simply prefers to see the bright side of things.

“Observations of the malaises of the modern world and the baffling obsession with purity and difference all make me think,” says frontman and founding member Danny Estrin. “We’ve never had it better and we’ve never had it more colorful. To me that’s progress, it’s adaptation, it’s evolution and it’s astounding.”

The follow-up to 2017’s  Ghost Mile ,  Colours in the Sun  finds Voyager enmeshed in rich, melodic, song-first tapestries, led by Estrin’s smooth, capable clean vocal delivery. Estrin is self-aware of his vocals, calling them “unique and ‘80s.” But whatever tag Estrin affixes to his voice, they are the propellent throughout  Colours in the Sun , serving up a steady diet of soaring, emotive choruses, where melody is paramount and along the way, even getting some help from another distinctive belter, Leprous’s Einar Solberg on “Entropy.”   “Einar and I became good friends on our tours through Europe and Australia,” notes Estrin. “I couldn’t help but ask him to guest on the album. He is a fantastic musician and vocalist. I sent him a reference track which he swiftly ignored and laid his own tracks down. The result is stunning!” The kaleidoscope of sounds that comprise the album’s ten cuts is the result of Voyager’s far-reaching influences, many of which go beyond the traditional realms of metal and rock. Estrin calls it “catchy at the top, proggy at the bottom, as if Dream Theater and Depeche Mode had a baby.” It’s almost as if the term “progressive” is too limiting for Voyager, particularly when the guitar tandem of Simone Dow and Scott Kay merge for complex rhythms while doing battle against Estrin’s vaudeville-like keyboards (!) on “Reconnected.”

The “proggy at the bottom” notice is served by way of the rhythm section of bassist Alex Canion and drummer Ashley Doodkorte, who stretch their musical tentacles across busy, active cuts such as “Saccharine Dream” and the syncopated “Water Over the Bridge.” “I think we found our ‘voice’ on  V  (2014) and have been building on that ever since,” says Estrin. “The synthwave prog sound is really something that has naturally developed and has been refined even more on the new album. Every record is progress — that’s what progressive music is all about!” According to Estrin, the  Colours in the Sun  album title encompasses a “vibrant multitude of people coming together under the hot Australian sun to create a beautiful and colorful soundscape.” It’s capped off by artwork courtesy of Doodkorte, who made the piece out of photographs near his house in Perth. A closer inspection reveals there are seven suns on the cover, one for each Voyager album, topped off by an updated version of the band’s logo comprised of five strokes, one for each member. No doubt a fitting visual summation of a band whose progress can be the described in the most literal and figurative of terms. “It’s been a slow steady growth over the years,” concludes Estrin. “Other bands come and go after a year of fame. I really feel like we’ve built up an incredible fanbase, especially over the last decade, and the deal with Season of Mist seemed the logical step to take it to the next level together.”

Voyager – A Voyage Through Time (Album Review)

Release date: august 26th 2022 - season of mist.

Voyager - A Voyage Through Time

Recorded live at Magnet House in Perth, it is my pleasure to review A Voyage Through Time by none other than Voyager. This release is an absolute must for fans of Voyager, it’s got everything and it’s just so much fun to listen to.

A Voyage Through Time was released on 26 th August 2022 on Season of the Mist. Voyager is Danny Estrin (Lead Vocals/Keys/Programming), Simone Dow (Guitars), Alex Canion (Bass/Backing Vocals), Scott Kay (Guitars), and Ashley Doodkorte (Drums).

It’s not often you pick up a live recording and enjoy it from start to finish from the very first listen. This release is so much fun, the sections with Danny talking are genuinely funny, and the band’s sound is so complete that there’s literally something for everyone.

This release personifies what it means to be progressive.

This is a clean polished release for a live album. It’s a great mix of the energy that you get from a live release combined with the finesse of a studio album. Hats off to the band and their sound engineers for pulling it off so well.

Power metal? Check. Folk metal? Yep. Black metal vocals? You better believe it! It’s eclectic, it’s a mess, but my god it works on so many levels. What a talented band to pull off this sound so explicitly.

Iron Dream is the stand-out track for me, which as they describe is inspired by Peter Steele (I’m a massive Type O Negative fan so this was always going to score points). Other stand-out moments are the middle eastern sounds in The Meaning of I , the distinctive power metal finish for Hyperventilating , and the total atmospheric influences of Sober.

A Voyage Through Time is a journey through the band’s back catalog, demonstrating the evolution and maturation of their sound. I’ve said it a couple of times and I’ll reiterate it again; this is such a fun release and is guaranteed to improve your mood. Take the time to listen from start to finish, it’s a long release, but worth the time investment.

Voyager – A Voyage Through Time

Voyager – A Voyage Through Time

As we’re all hoping for the pandemic to keep receding so that real live concerts can become normal again rather than being an exception, there are still some (pre-recorded) live streams for us to enjoy from some of our favorite bands in the prog circus. ‘Enjoy’ being the central word here most certainly for “A Voyage Through Time” , an extensive career-spanning event Western Australia’s Voyager have put together.

Well two decades into their career, frontman and sole remaining founding member Danny Estrin welcomes us in the green room of Perth’s Amplifier Bar doodling about on probably one of his first Keyboards, with floppy disc and all. He dons his first jacket of the evening, a classic leather jacket adorned with the Voyager logo, and we follow him out on the stage, where he and his bandmates kick off things in style with the “Element V” (2003) double ‘To the Morning Light’ and the especially power metal-y ‘The Eleventh Meridian’, including german spoken word and bridge part and the first of many signature parallel guitar lines of the evening courtesy of the well-oiled tandem of Simone Dow and Scott Kay . The immense fun of any Voyager show is transported right into your bed or living rooms, or wherever you’re watching. Dad jokes, sing-alongs, stage banter
a Voyager show wouldn’t be the same without all of that. So naturally, all of those ingredients are also present when they are performing in front of cameras to be captured for an audience around the world.

Moving into “UniVers” (2007) territory with the romantic hit single ‘Sober’ featuring a blistering guitar solo from Simone, a Keytar-pan flute interlude from Danny and the embarrassing hit about a horse in the sky, the fun “White Shadow”. A perfect opportunity for bassist Alex Canion to show off his slurring black metal shrieks in that bridge as well as some impressive higher register backing ad libs in the last chorus.

“Let’s go full goth!” Long gone is the metal leather jacket, it’s time for the black cloak and ‘The Devil in Me’ from 2009’s “I Am the ReVolution”. Speaking of which: punk style it is now for the title track with a red/black checkered jacket. And also time for some fun keytar action obviously! Triple unisons, yay! Gothic melodic power metal galore!

A turning point in Voyager’s discography was 2011s “The Meaning of I”. Representing this huge step in their history, they chose ‘Iron Dream’, a tribute to one of their biggest idols Peter Steele ( Type o Negative ) and the savagely heavy and headbanging inducing title-track. The black kind of straight jacket from the music video suits Danny well for this period. Some heavy groovy shit to quote him. A defining point indeed.

Usually, you would take advantage of commercial breaks to go and take a leak or get some fresh snacks and beverages. Not this time though as Photos by Doodlekorte ’s graphic advice, Mister Re±eipt ’s accounting advice for touring bands and Scott Kay’s discovery of the inventive Philly Tone are not to be missed under any circumstance.

Ashley Doodkorte (Voyager)

Returning to the stage, drummer Ash Doodkorte is getting us into the mood for ‘Hyperventilating’ with an extended drum intro including some nice pyro effects. By the time of “V” (2014), Voyager had perfected their formula of super catchy, yet heavy, proggy and most of all groovy hit singles. More pyros for the breakdown and subsequently equally hot solo-shredding from Scott & Simone. This is getting out of hand folks, I think I’m
hyperventilating. Luckily I don’t have to sprint up a few stairs to reach the grand piano like Danny. ‘Summer Always Comes Again’ always gives a welcome breather (energy-wise, not emotionally), of course leading into ‘The Seasons of Age’, getting an extended drum outro to give Danny and the band the chance to get a shot (of rum I assume?). (No worries, Ash was not forgotten.)

Ashley Doodkorte (Voyager)

Seeing that Voyager have picked two songs from each album (counting ‘Summer Always Comes Again’ as intro to “The Seasons of Age”), it was kind of a given that they’d pick the title track to 2017’s “Ghost Mile” (also including the quasi-intro ‘To the Riverside’). ‘The Fragile Serene’ seems to be a surprise pick, as I would have rather expected ‘Ascension’, ‘Misery is Only Company’ or ‘“What A Wonderful Day’. Luckily that’s not that big of an issue when choosing from a near-perfect album full of bangers.

Simone Dow (Voyager)

‘Brightstar’ and ‘Runaway’ (with keyboard delivery from sound engineer Aidan Barton , just like in the music video) complete the journey in a white jacket and the colours of the stage lighting turning all, well, colourful after a mostly mono- and duo-chromatic show. But Voyager’s latest album is called “Colours in the Sun” after all, so it’s fitting perfectly!

Scott Kay (Voyager)

Scott Kay (Pic by Keith Mitchell)

A voyage in 5 jackets and 7 albums: Voyager managed to capture the immense fun of their live shows for audiences around the world – and leave us craving for more. Especially since there was no ‘Lost’, and even worse, no ‘Sandstorm’ this time. Promise you will get us that much needed fix again once you’re out on tour again? Oh and how about another one of those super fun cover medleys? One can only dream right now. Or rewatch “A Voyage Through Time” as long as it’s still up. Here’s to the five Perthians journeying on for many more years!

Voyager 1’s Revival Offers Inspiration for Everyone on Earth

Instruments may fail, but humanity’s most distant sentinel will keep exploring, and inspiring us all

Amid April’s litany of bad news—war in Gaza, protests on American campuses, an impasse in Ukraine—a little uplift came for science buffs.

NASA has reestablished touch with Voyager 1 , the most distant thing built by our species, now hurtling through interstellar space far beyond the orbit of Pluto. The extraordinarily durable spacecraft had stopped transmitting data in November, but NASA engineers managed a very clever work-around, and it is sending data again. Now more than 15 billion miles away, Voyager 1 is the farthest human object, and continues to speed away from us at approximately 38,000 miles per hour.

Like an old car that continues to run, or an uncle blessed with an uncommonly long life, the robotic spacecraft is a super ager that goes on and on—and, in doing so, has captivated space buffs everywhere.

Launched on September 5, 1977, the one-ton Voyager 1 was meant to chart the outer solar system, in particular the gas giant planets Jupiter and Saturn, and Saturn’s moon, Titan. Its twin, Voyager 2 , launched the same year, followed a different trajectory with a slightly different mission to explore the outer planets before heading to the solar system’s edge.

Those were NASA’s glory days. A few years earlier, NASA had successfully landed men on the moon—and won the space race for the U.S. NASA’s engineers were the envy of the world.

To get to Jupiter and Saturn, both Voyagers had to traverse the asteroid belt, which is full of rocks and debris orbiting the sun. They had to survive cosmic rays, intense radiation from Jupiter and other perils of space. But the two spacecraft made it without a hitch.

President Jimmy Carter held office when Voyager 1 was launched from Cape Canaveral; Elvis Presley had died just three weeks before; gas was about 60 cents a gallon; and, like now, the Middle East was in crisis, with Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat trying to find peace.

Voyager 1 sent back spectacular photos of Jupiter and its giant red spot. It showed how dynamic the Jovian atmosphere was, with clouds and storms. It also took pictures of Jupiter’s moon Io, with its volcanoes, and Saturn’s moon Titan , which astronomers think has an atmosphere similar to the primordial Earth’s. The spacecraft discovered a thin ring around Jupiter and two new Jovian moons, which were named Thebe and Metis. On reaching Saturn, it discovered five new moons as well as a new ring.

And then Voyager 1 continued on its journey and sent images back from the edge of the solar system. Many of us remember the Pale Blue Dot , a haunting picture of the Earth it took on Feb 14, 1990, when it was a distance of 3.7 billion miles from the sun. The astronomer Carl Sagan wrote:

“There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”

By then Voyager 1 had long outlived its planetary mission but kept faithfully calling home as it traveled beyond the solar system into the realm of the stars. By 2012 Voyager 1 had reached the heliosphere , the farthest edge of the solar system. There, it penetrated the heliopause, where the solar wind ends, stopped by particles coming from the interstellar medium, the vast space between the stars. (Astronomers know that the space between the stars is not totally empty but permeated by a rarefied gas .)

From Voyager 1, scientists learned that the heliopause is quite dynamic and first measured the magnetic field of the Milky Way beyond the solar system. And its instruments kept sending data as it traveled through the interstellar medium.

On hearing that Voyager 1 had gone dark, I had checked in with Louis Lanzerotti , a former Bell Labs planetary scientist who did the calibrations for the Voyager 1 spacecraft and was a principal investigator on many experiments. He told me that a NASA manager in the 1970s had doubted that the spacecraft’s mechanical scan platform, which pointed instruments at targets, and very thin solid state detectors, which took those edge of the solar system readings, on the spacecraft would survive. They not only survived but worked flawlessly for all this time, Lanzerotti said, providing excellent data for decades. He was overjoyed on hearing the news that Voyager 1 was still alive.

Voyager 1 instruments have power until 2025 . After that, they will shut off, one by one. But there is nothing to stop the spacecraft as it speeds away from us in the vast emptiness of space.

Thousands of years from now, maybe when the human race has left this planet, Voyager 1, the tiny little spacecraft that could, will still continue its inexorable journey to the stars.

Voyager: Alzheimer's Clinical Trial Start (VY-TAU01) Strengthens Investment Thesis

BioCGT Investor profile picture

  • Voyager Therapeutics, Inc. is a biotech company focused on developing gene-based therapies for neurological conditions.
  • The company has made progress in its pipeline, including the start of the Phase 1 clinical trial for VY-TAU01, its Alzheimer's disease candidate.
  • Voyager's strong revenue-driver partnerships and financial stability make it a "Strong Buy" for long-term investors.

Neurons and Microglia

Voyager Therapeutics, Inc. ( NASDAQ: VYGR ) is a biotechnology company in the clinical stage, which is focused on developing novel therapies, mostly gene-based therapies, for the treatment of conditions that alter the nervous system such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Friedreich's Ataxia, Huntington's disease (HD), Parkinson's disease (PD), among others.

A few months ago, I took an in-depth look into Voyager's technology, its pipeline and financials based on their FY 2023 10K report. Back then, the share price was standing around $9. Since then, the stock has continued to show high volatility, sliding to around $7.50 and bouncing back to its current $8.51. In my previous article, I rated the stock as a "Buy" based on the strong partnerships with companies such as Novartis AG ( NVS ), Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. ( NBIX ) and AstraZeneca PLC ( AZN ), the great potential of VYGR's TRACER capsids, which can deliver therapeutic molecules to the brain via an intravenous injection, and its strong balance sheet.

Recently, the company released its Q1 2024 financial report , which depicts the financial stability of the company, holding similar amounts of cash than its current market cap. More importantly, VYGR has been providing updates in its different pipeline programs, which include the start of its first clinical trial associated with VY-TAU01. Interestingly, last month the company participated in the American Society of Cell & Gene Therapy (ASCGT), where they delivered an oral presentation showcasing the development of the next generation of TRACER capsids, which have proven to have a higher capacity to target brain cells than the first generation.

Thus, considering all the positive advances, in my opinion, Voyager Therapeutics is now a "Strong Buy".

In my previous article, I described the reliance on the TRACER patents as a potential risk, despite the seemingly strong TRACER IP. The main rationale was that most of Voyager's pipeline and multi-million partnerships are dependent on this technology. However, the TRACER capsids haven't been tested in humans, which brings two layers of risks.

The first one is that despite the outstanding preclinical results, testing the technology in humans is the only way to definitely demonstrate if the TRACER capsids are efficient in crossing the blood-brain-barrier (BBB), delivering the therapeutic molecules to brain cells and spare damage to other tissues such as the liver. This is still pending to be tested.

The second layer of concern is related to the possibility that the technology is deemed unsafe or obsolete. The longer that Voyager takes on obtaining regulatory approval for their product candidates, the higher the chance that some other biotechnology company develops something with the potential to affect the value of the TRACER technology. With this in mind, finding out that Voyager is already working on the next-generation capsids, is another important sign of forward-looking progress. In my opinion, the fact that the company is already developing a safer and more efficient version of the TRACER capsids will enable VYGR to tackle potentially disappointing data from the clinical trials.

Furthermore, the start of the Phase 1a clinical trial which aims to test the safety and pharmacological dynamics of VY-TAU01, the only product candidate that does not use the TRACER capsids, in healthy participants ahead of schedule is an excellent sign of progress. In my opinion, if VY-TAU01 shows promise in clinical trials, it might become Voyager's first commercial product before its cash runway ends (2027).

Taking these two major positive signs of progress, together with a few more updates that I will be describing in this article, I give a rate upgrade to Voyager Therapeutics, considering them as "Strong Buy" for long-term investors due to its high-risk/high-reward potential.

Pipeline Q1 2024 Updates

VY-TAU-01 is one of the wholly-owned Voyager's product candidates and the only product candidate that doesn't rely on the TRACER capsids. The therapeutic molecule is an antibody developed by Voyager which binds to the C-terminal of pathological TAU (see image below), which is a protein associated with Alzheimer's disease progress. Therefore, VY-TAU01 is expected to slow down the progress of AD by reducing the spread of pathological TAU in the brain.

Preclinical data associated with VY-TAU01 and its key milestones

Preclinical data associated with VY-TAU01 and its key milestones (Voyager's Q1 2024 Earnings call presentation)

Voyager's management, as described in its FY 2023 10K , was aiming to submit the investigational new drug (IND) application for VY-TAU01 in H1 2024. However, they decided to go ahead of schedule, and not only have they submitted the IND application to the U.S. FDA in Q1 2024, but also they have received the FDA clearance and started dosing the first participants in April 2024 , which was originally expected by H2 2024.

The start of the VY-TAU01 single-dose clinical trial, well ahead of schedule, is a major achievement for Voyager and for people suffering from Alzheimer's disease, which in my opinion the market has not factored in yet. Given the time alignment, I suspect the new Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Toby Ferguson M.D., Ph.D., who was appointed by mid-March could be held accountable for the IND submission success. Hence, it should be a good sign for future submissions to regulatory agencies.

This single ascending dose (SAD) Phase 1a clinical trial is a randomized, double-blind SAD trial where 48 healthy volunteers will be dosed with VY-TAU01 or a placebo, which is taking place in the United States. The objective of this study is to assess the safety and the pharmacological interactions of VY-TAU01 in humans. In other words, the idea is to assess for the first time in humans if the VY-TAU01 causes no damage to the brain or other organs while also assessing the biological distribution of VY-TAU01, and participants' responses to the ascending doses. Results from this trial will inform the dose selection of the upcoming Phase 1b multiple-ascending dose (MAD) trial in people with early AD, which is expected to start in H1 2025 and provide conclusive results by H2 2026.

One of the FDA-approved antibody-based treatments that have been proven to slow down the progress of AD is Leqembi, which is licensed by Biogen Inc. ( BIIB ) and Eisai Co., Ltd. ( OTCPK:ESAIY ) reported sales revenue amounting to JPY 4.3 billion for Q1 2024, as reported in Eisai's 10-Q report . Leqembi obtained FDA approval in 2023 , and it is forecasted to reach sales of approximately $3.5 billion by 2030.

If Leqembi's sales and estimations are to be relatively applicable to VY-TAU01, once it obtains regulatory approval, the revenue opportunity would be very transformative to Voyager Therapeutics. Thus, investors should keep an eye on the development of this product candidate as it goes through clinical trials.

Neurocrine's collaborations

Voyager has two collaborative programs with Neurocrine. The first program is aimed at the treatment of Friedreich's ataxia, which is a neurodegenerative condition affecting the coordination of legs and arms. The therapeutic approach is aimed to be a gene therapy solution that delivers a healthy version of the FXN gene, which is usually altered in people with FA.

NBIX and VYGR have announced, in its Q1 10-Q, that they have selected the payload of their TRACER capsids in February, and are expecting to submit the IND and start the first clinical trials in humans in 2025. The selection of the product candidate for this program already yielded a $5 million milestone payment to VYGR, which was realized in the Q1 2024 report.

The second collaborative program is the GBA1 gene replacement, which is aimed at the treatment of Parkinson's Disease. In this occasion, the companies are aiming to utilize the TRACER capsids to deliver a healthy version of GBA1, which is usually altered in people with PD. In this sense, within the Q1 2024 report, VYGR announced that together with NBIX they have selected the therapeutic candidate associated with this program, and expect to file the IND by 2025. It is to highlight that the product candidate selection is a milestone, which involves a partnership payment from NBIX to VYGR of $3 million, that is expected to be reflected in Q2 2024 financial report.

Next-generation TRACER capsids

Voyager Therapeutics participated at the ASCGT 2024 conference , where it showcased the discovery of the second-generation of TRACER capsids with an enhanced capacity to cross the BBB and deliver genetic cargoes to neurons and astrocytes (i.e., brain cells), while having an even lower tendency to target other organs, such as the liver, than the first generation (see image below).

TRACER capsids second-generation results in two animal models

TRACER capsids second-generation results in two animal models (ASCGT 2024 presentation, May 2024)

The company has extensive preclinical data, in different animal models, showing the outstanding results of the second-generation TRACER capsids, showing the possibility to customize the cell targeting (i.e., a direct target of neurone or glial cells), enabling the recognition of specific cell markers, while showing negligible targeting of liver or heart.

In summary, I believe that the new generation of TRACER capsids with an even higher potential to deliver therapeutic genetic cargoes in a safe and specific manner increases Voyager's possibilities of success in the development of neurogenetic therapeutic products.

TRACER capsids first-generation vs. second-generation

TRACER capsids first-generation vs. second-generation (Voyager's Q1 2024 earnings presentation)

The Q1 2024 financial results are relatively strong considering that Voyager doesn't have any commercial products yet (see table below).

Q1 2024 Financial Summary

Q1 2024 Financial Summary (Data collected by the author from Q1 2024 financial report)

In terms of Q1 2024 revenue, which comes from partnerships, a total of $18 million is coming from the Neurocrine programs. In comparison with Q1 2023, Q1 2024's revenues are $130 million lower. The decrease is due to the realization of large milestone payments from NVS ($79 million) and NBIX ($71.5 million) in Q1 2023.

On the other hand, due to the ramp-up towards clinical trials associated with the leading product candidates, the operating expenses have increased by $8 million when comparing Q1 2024 vs. Q1 2023. This is not only expected, but in my opinion, a welcomed increase given the necessary progress of the leading candidates into clinical trials.

Furthermore, given Voyager's strong cash position totaling nearly $400 million, and relatively low accumulated deficit of $272.5 million, as reported in the Q1 10-Q, I think Voyager is in a very stable position in terms of its balance sheet . In this sense, Voyager's management stated in their Q1 report the following:

As of March 31, 2024, we had cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities of $400.5 million. Based upon our current operating plans, we expect that our existing cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities on March 31, 2024, along with amounts expected to be received as reimbursement for development costs under our collaboration and licence agreements with Neurocrine and Novartis, certain near-term milestones, and interest income, to be sufficient to meet our planned operating expenses and capital expenditure requirements into 2027.

In this sense, to calculate the cash runway of Voyager, I have considered the company's cash on hand ($400 million), and estimated the quarterly cash burn to increase further from the $35.7 million reported in Q1 2024 to approximately $40 million, given the expected start of more clinical trials. Therefore, the company has enough cash on hand to cover their current operating expenses and the development of the expected clinical trials for up to 3 years from now. In addition, it is important to highlight that the company might be able to receive milestone payments that might extend even further the cash runway.

Voyager's shares are trading at $8.51, with a market cap of $462.89 million, which is only marginally higher than the cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities held by the company by the end of Q1 2024. In the last three months, the stock has continued to face high volatility, as it can be appreciated from the candle chart below, and the MACD lines crossing multiple times (see image below). However, the analysis of the EMA and MACD indicators supports a bullish case for VYGR.

In addition, the company is holding multi-billion dollar revenue potential based on collaboration partnerships (see image below), which are generating milestone payments in favor of Voyager as well as covering the cost of the research & development associated with those programs.

Voyager's collaborations-driven revenue potential

Voyager's collaborations-driven revenue potential (Voyager's Q1 2024 earnings presentation)

In terms of the Novartis partnership, it is important to highlight that NVS has already exercised the buy-out of $25 million in VYGR shares, which can be expanded up to $86 million. On the other hand, considering that larger pharmaceutical companies such as NVS and NBIX agreed with VYGR milestones payments that can total up to $6.7 billion plus royalties, I would believe the current $462.89 million market cap is very far from Voyager's worth. In this sense, I wonder if NVS is considering an M&A transaction, which at this point would be much cheaper than the milestone payment associated with their partnership programs.

Another evidence of revenue potential is the start of clinical trials ahead of schedule, which may accelerate the progress of VY-TAU01 into a commercial product, with multibillion dollar potential if/when regulatory approval is achieved.

Considering the discussion before and the intrinsic value calculated in my previous article, a $10.96 target share price, I consider that Voyager Therapeutics is a "Strong Buy" at the current share price.

The largest risk that investors have to consider is that Voyager's product candidates lack conclusive efficacy and safety data in humans. In this sense, the company has, finally, started its first clinical trial associated with VY-TAU01, and it is expected to start clinical trials associated with 3 other programs (FA, GAB1, and ALS) in 2025. Thus, in my opinion, investors should be mindful that despite the strong preclinical data and the support of large pharmaceutical companies, there is a possibility of failure when the therapeutic candidates are tested in humans. Nonetheless, if the clinical trials yield positive results, I would expect the share price and the milestones-driven revenue to react positively.

Additionally, given that the clinical trials will start yielding preliminary results by H2 2025 and early 2026, I would expect the share price to continue experiencing high volatility in the near term.

In summary, I believe, Voyager Therapeutics, Inc. has provided enough progress in their pipeline to justify the rating upgrade. Not only have they submitted the VY-TAU01's IND ahead of schedule, but also the FDA has granted clearance rapidly, which I consider an excellent sign. The start of the clinical trials is a stage that investors, including me, have been waiting for. So, I am very pleased to see that it took less than one month from receiving FDA clearance to the start of the trial.

Likewise, the announcement of the next-generation TRACER capsids with a larger capacity to specifically target nervous system cells and a lower tendency to target undesired organs (e.g., liver) after being injected intravenously is also a major milestone for Voyager. In my opinion, this demonstrates Voyager's forward-looking thinking, and it shows its valuable know-how on the development of genetic carriers with the capacity to cross the BBB.

Finally, the strong partnership agreements, together with Voyager's advances in their wholly-owned programs and the strong cash position, suggest that the enterprise value of Voyager is much higher than the current $462.98 million market cap. However, the stock is likely to observe high volatility in the short term, given the lack of conclusive data in humans.

Things are finally looking up for the Voyager 1 interstellar spacecraft

Two of the four science instruments aboard the Voyager 1 spacecraft are now returning usable data after months of transmitting only gibberish, NASA scientists have announced.

Voyager 1

I was once sitting with my father while Googling how far away various things in the solar system are from Earth. He was looking for exact numbers, and very obviously grew more invested with each new figure I shouted out. I was thrilled. The moon? On average, 238,855 miles (384,400 kilometers) away. The James Webb Space Telescope ? Bump that up to about a million miles (1,609,344 km) away. The sun? 93 million miles (149,668,992 km) away.  Neptune ? 2.8  billion  miles (4.5 billion km) away. "Well, wait until you hear about Voyager 1," I eventually said, assuming he was aware of what was coming. He was not.

"NASA's  Voyager 1  interstellar spacecraft actually isn't even in the solar system anymore," I announced. "Nope, it's more than 15 billion miles (24 billion km)  away from us  — and it's getting even farther as we speak." I can't quite remember his response, but I do indeed recall an expression of sheer disbelief. There were immediate inquiries about how that's even physically possible. There were bewildered laughs, different ways of saying "wow," and mostly, there was a contagious sense of awe. And just like that, a new Voyager 1 fan was born.

It is easy to see why Voyager 1 is among the most beloved robotic space explorers we have — and it is thus easy to understand why so many people felt a pang to their hearts several months ago, when Voyager 1 stopped talking to us.

Related:  After months of sending gibberish to NASA, Voyager 1 is finally making sense again

For reasons unknown at the time, this spacecraft began sending back gibberish in place of the neatly organized and data-rich 0's and 1's it had been providing since its  launch in 1977 . It was this classic computer language which allowed Voyager 1 to converse with its creators while earning the title of "farthest human made object." It's how the spacecraft relayed vital insight that led to the discovery of new Jovian moons and, thanks to this sort of binary podcast, scientists incredibly identified a new ring of Saturn and created the solar system's first and only "family portrait." This code, in essence, is crucial to Voyager 1's very being.

Plus, to make matters worse, the issue behind the glitch turned out to be associated with the craft's Flight Data System, which is literally the system that transmits information about Voyager 1's health so scientists can correct any issues that arise. Issues like this one. Furthermore, because of the spacecraft's immense distance from its operators on Earth, it takes about 22.5 hours for a transmission to reach the spacecraft, and then 22.5 hours to receive a transmission back. Alas, things weren't looking good for a while — for about five months, to be precise.

But then, on April 20, Voyager 1  finally phoned home  with legible 0's and legible 1's.

Earth as a

"The team had gathered early on a weekend morning to see whether telemetry would return," Bob Rasmussen, a member of the Voyager flight team, told Space.com. "It was nice to have everyone assembled in one place like this to share in the moment of learning that our efforts had been successful. Our cheer was both for the intrepid spacecraft and for the comradery that enabled its recovery."

And  then,  on May 22 , Voyager scientists released the welcome announcement that the spacecraft has successfully resumed returning science data from two of its four instruments, the plasma wave subsystem and magnetometer instrument. They're now working on getting the other two, the cosmic ray subsystem and low energy charged particle instrument, back online as well. Though there technically are six other instruments onboard Voyager, those had been out of commission for some time.

The comeback

Rasmussen was actually a member of the Voyager team in the 1970s, having worked on the project as a computer engineer before leaving for other missions including  Cassini , which launched the spacecraft that taught us almost everything we currently know about Saturn. In 2022, however, he returned to Voyager because of a separate dilemma with the mission — and has remained on the team ever since.

"There are many of the original people who were there when Voyager launched, or even before, who were part of both the flight team and the science team," Linda Spilker, a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory , who also worked on the Voyager mission, told Space.com in the This Week from Space podcast on the TWiT network. "It's a real tribute to Voyager — the longevity not only of the spacecraft, but of the people on the team."

To get Voyager 1 back online, in rather cinematic fashion, the team devised a complex workaround that prompted the FDS to send a copy of its memory back to Earth. Within that memory readout, operators managed to discover the crux of the problem — a corrupted code spanning a single chip — which was then remedied through another (honestly,  super interesting ) process to modify the code. On the day Voyager 1 finally spoke again, "you could have heard a pin drop in the room," Spilker said. "It was very silent. Everybody's looking at the screen, waiting and watching."

The rocket that launched Voyager 1 in 1977.

Of course, Spilker also brought in some peanuts for the team to munch on — but not just any peanuts. Lucky peanuts.

It's a longstanding tradition at JPL to have a peanut feast before major mission events like launches, milestones and, well, the possible resurrection of Voyager 1. It  began  in the 1960s, when the agency was trying to launch the Ranger 7 mission that was meant to take pictures of and collect data about the moon's surface. Rangers 1 through 6 had all failed, so Ranger 7 was a big deal. As such, the mission's trajectory engineer, Dick Wallace, brought lots of peanuts for the team to nibble on and relax. Sure enough, Ranger 7 was a success and, as Wallace once said, "the rest is history."

Voyager 1 needed some of those positive snacky vibes.

"It'd been five months since we'd had any information," Spilker explained. So, in this room of silence besides peanut-eating-noises, Voyager 1 operators sat at their respective system screens, waiting.

"All of a sudden it started to populate — the data," Spilker said. That's when the programmers who had been staring at those screens in anticipation leapt out of their seats and began to cheer: "They were the happiest people in the room, I think, and there was just a sense of joy that we had Voyager 1 back."

flight team of voyager 1

Eventually, Rasmussen says the team was able to conclude that the failure probably occurred due to a combination of aging and radiation damage by which energetic particles in space bombarded the craft. This is also why he believes it wouldn't be terribly surprising to see a similar failure occur in the future, seeing as Voyager 1 is still roaming beyond the distant boundaries of our stellar neighborhood just like its spacecraft twin,  Voyager 2 .

To be sure, the spacecraft isn't fully fixed yet — but it's lovely to know things are finally looking up, especially with the recent news that some of its science instruments are back on track. And, at the very least, Rasmussen assures that nothing the team has learned so far has been alarming. "We're confident that we understand the problem well," he said, "and we remain optimistic about getting everything back to normal — but we also expect this won't be the last."

The trajectory of the Voyagers.

In fact, as Rasmussen explains, Voyager 1 operators first became optimistic about the situation just after the root cause of the glitch had been determined with certainty. He also emphasizes that the team's spirits were never down. "We knew from indirect evidence that we had a spacecraft that was mostly healthy," he said. "Saying goodbye was not on our minds."

"Rather," he continued, "we wanted to push toward a solution as quickly as possible so other matters on board that had been neglected for months could be addressed. We're now calmly moving toward that goal."

The future of Voyager's voyage

It can't be ignored that, over the last few months, there has been an air of anxiety and fear across the public sphere that Voyager 1 was slowly moving toward sending us its final 0 and final 1. Headlines all over the internet, one written by  myself included , have carried clear, negative weight. I think it's because even if Voyager 2 could technically carry the interstellar torch post-Voyager 1, the prospect of losing Voyager 1 felt like the prospect of losing a piece of history.

"We've crossed this boundary called the heliopause," Spilker explained of the Voyagers. "Voyager 1 crossed this boundary in 2012; Voyager 2 crossed it in 2018 — and, since that time, were the first spacecraft ever to make direct measurements of the interstellar medium." That medium basically refers to material that fills the space between stars. In this case, that's the space between other stars and our sun, which, though we don't always think of it as one, is simply another star in the universe. A drop in the cosmic ocean.

"JPL started building the two Voyager spacecraft in 1972," Spilker explained. "For context, that was only three years after we had the first human walk on the moon — and the reason we started that early is that we had this rare alignment of the planets that happens once every  176 years ." It was this alignment that could promise the spacecraft checkpoints across the solar system, including at Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Those checkpoints were important for the Voyagers in particular. Alongside planetary visits come gravity assists, and gravity assists can help fling stuff within the solar system — and, now we know, beyond.

As the first humanmade object to leave the solar system, as a relic of America's early space program, and as a testament to how robust even decades-old technology can be, Voyager 1 has carved out the kind of legacy usually reserved for remarkable things lost to time.

The

"Our scientists are eager to see what they’ve been missing," Rasmussen remarked. "Everyone on the team is self-motivated by their commitment to this unique and important project. That's where the real pressure comes from."

Still, in terms of energy, the team's approach has been clinical and determined.

— NASA's Voyager 1 sends readable message to Earth after 4 nail-biting months of gibberish

— NASA engineers discover why Voyager 1 is sending a stream of gibberish from outside our solar system

— NASA's Voyager 1 probe hasn't 'spoken' in 3 months and needs a 'miracle' to save it

"No one was ever especially excited or depressed," he said. "We're confident that we can get back to business as usual soon, but we also know that we're dealing with an aging spacecraft that is bound to have trouble again in the future. That's just a fact of life on this mission, so not worth getting worked up about."

Nonetheless, I imagine it's always a delight for Voyager 1's engineers to remember this robotic explorer occupies curious minds around the globe. (Including my dad's mind now, thanks to me and Google.)

As Rasmussen puts it: "It's wonderful to know how much the world appreciates this mission."
