Glow Festival 

November 16 - December 31

Stroll through CHS field and enjoy an interactive holiday-themed light display made up of over a million dazzling lights. The walk-through festival features a selection of attractions including an enchanted forest, a selfie plaza, and bike pedal-powered Christmas trees. CHS Field, 360 N. Arboretum Winter Lights 

Select dates November 16 - December 31

Head to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum for a scenic holiday stroll through outdoor light displays. New this year is a color changing tunnel and a winter village on scarecrow hill. Sever's Holiday Light Show

November 2023 - January 2024 

The fun doesn't stop with the corn maze at Sever's Farm. Head back and enjoy their 25,000,000-plus holiday light show this winter. The drive through experience allows visitors to watch the festive lights flicker to the beat of classic holiday tunes from the comfort of their warm vehicle. 50th and France Holiday Tree Lighting  

November 25 

Ring in the holiday and celebrate small businesses in Edina at the 50th and France holiday tree lighting event. From morning until night, special holiday themed events will occur at select 50th and France businesses. Union Depot Holiday Tree Lighting

December 2 

A Twin Cities holiday tradition, this year Union Depot’s annual holiday tree lighting will be accompanied by a screening of the holiday family classic Elf. The tree will remain lit through the month of December on the north plaza. 214 E. 4th St, Mpls., 651-202 -2700,  uniondepot.org

Nordic Plaza Tree Lighting 

December 6

November 17 - December 31

Downtown Minneapolis Christmas Lights & Christmas Events

If you’re looking for some displays right in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, here are your best bets:

Each year, downtown Minneapolis’s Loring Park is transformed into a winter wonderland. They light up the trees and pack the park with food, drinks, a local market, and even amusement rides like a Ferris Wheel and Carousel. And to top it off, certain nights even feature firework shows!

Located at the Civil Engineering Building on the University of Minnesota Campus, the CSE Winter Light Show is one of the closest light displays to downtown Minneapolis.

For three days, the University’s College of Science and Engineering students will put on an incredible light show featuring a quarter-of-a-million LED lights! (All set to music that’s also recorded by U of M students!)

Here’s some Christmas lights with a unique twist…

Every winter, Psycho Suzi’s transforms their popular Northeast Minneapolis Tiki Bar into an “over the top 3-month Christmas Festival” which they describe as the “most carousing arousing Christmas themed dinner & cocktail experience in the North.”

St. Paul Christmas Lights & Christmas Events

This year, St. Paul is bringing a seriously impressive collection of places to see Christmas Lights:

Every winter, the Great Minnesota Get Together transforms itself into the Great Minnesota [Holiday] Get Together.

Last year, the festival was a drive through, but this year, they’re letting you get even more immersed in the holiday cheer, since the whole display is now a walk-through event!

With over a million lights and a three story ice palace, this is always one of the most impressive Christmas light displays in the Twin Cities.

Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, did we mention there’s a State Fair Food Court?

Every year, St. Paul’s Union Depot installs an amazing Christmas tree right in front of the historic downtown building. 

There’s a dedicated lighting ceremony this year on December 4, 2021, but you can always check out the beautiful tree on any December night.

Plus, the Holiday Tree is just one part of a whole host of festivities at St. Paul’s Union Depot. Each weekend from November 26-19, a European Christmas Market takes places in a temporary (and very magical!) Christmas Village on the grounds. There’s a Holiday Bake Sale and Frozen II Movie Night this year. And for the kiddos, you won’t want to miss the hugely popular North Pole Express – an actual train ride that departs from the Depot to the “North Pole” where kids can meet Santa and his elves.

2022 Update: No cathedral of lights this year, and no word yet if it will return for future years.

The beautiful St. Paul cathedral has recently embraced one of the best light shows in the city. They have both an interior and exterior light show this year.

For the exterior light show, you can see a wild, 12 minute cinematic projection on the 150 foot tall eastern wall of the cathedral. It’s run on a continuous loop during operating hours, so you can view the show at your convenience. (For free!)

You will need tickets for the indoor show. Tickets cost $15 per person and allow you to enter the cathedral and experience the tall cathedral ceilings lit up with unique lights and sounds.

Every year, St. Paul drapes Rice Park’s tall trees with beautiful winter lights. It’s the perfect place for a quick stroll. And most years, they install an ice skating rink, too, so you can complete the scene of every romantic movie you’ve ever seen.

If you’re looking for a quick and easy stroll through a lighted up park, Mears Park will be lighting their trees again this year.

Christmas and Holiday Light Displays & Events in the Twin Cities Suburbs

Of course, the downtown areas are just one part of the Twin Cities’ Holiday Fun. Some of the metro’s best light displays take place in the nearby suburbs!

The Landscape Arboretum is beautiful in the summer and fall, but that beauty takes a whole new look each winter when the gardens become filled with thousands upon thousands of Christmas lights.

If you’ve ever wanted to stroll the beautifully illuminated grounds at night, this year is your chance. You can visit with a walking tour from mid-November until the New Year. On certain nights, your walk can be accompanied with live music as part of the Arboretum’s Winter Music Series.

And be sure to check out the special event nights, too, which range from family night, to date night, to a special photographer’s only event!

This year, Valleyfair has assembled an incredible collection of millions of Christmas lights. It’s a drive through display this year, so you’ll be able to experience it all in the comfort of your heated vehicle!

2022 Update: No word yet from MN Zoo on Nature Illuminated in 2022. We’ll keep you updated!

Nature Illuminated is a drive-through, narrated light display at the Minnesota Zoo. You’ll see oversized displays of animals and lights all throughout the zoo.

The event takes place now through January 2, 2022. But if you miss it, don’t fret! Beginning January 6, 2022, you can explore the lights by foot!

If you’re looking to drive (or walk) through a neighborhood with some amazing lit up houses, the historic Summit Avenue in St. Paul is a great bet. Every year, many of these historic mansions install some amazing Christmas displays on their amazing homes.

It’s perfect as either a partial, self-guided walking tour or a full drive down the 4.5 mile stretch of road.

• It is open seven days a week from 5:00 – 10:00 pm.
• There are SPECIAL EVENT NIGHTS! Stop by Friday, December 10th, or Tuesday, December 14th, from 5:00 – 6:30 pm for a special treat.
• After visiting their lights display, go to their website and enter their contest by guessing the total number of lights in their display. The closest guess will win a $100 VISA gift card.

Christmas Tree Walk and Tree Decorating Contest

• This dreamy Christmas tree walk and decorating contest is open December 1st – 24th, 2021

• This is a free walk-through event!

Bentleyville “Tour of Lights”

700 Railroad St. in Duluth, MN.

• The spectacular display is open November 20th – December 27th, 2021 
• Hours are Sunday – Thursday from 5:00 – 9:00 pm and Friday – Saturday from 5:00 – 10:00 pm. 
• Please note that Bentleyville is reverting to a Walk Through format for their 2021 season.
• Bentleyville has free admission for all guests, as well as complimentary hot cocoa & coffee, free cookies, free freshly popped popcorn, free marshmallows to roast, and free visits with Santa & Mrs. Claus! 
• There is a $10 per vehicle fee to park in the Bentleyville lots.
• Santa and Mrs. Claus will be standing near the line of guests to take your child’s Christmas wishes and take photos. Every child ten and under who visits Santa will receive a knit winter hat and cookies! To ensure the safety of guests and staff, visitors will not be permitted to sit on Santa’s lap.
• There is also an official Salvation Army drop-off site for non-perishable food items and new unwrapped toys.

• This magnificent light display is from November 26th, 2021 – January 1st, 2022
• They are open seven nights a week from 4:30 – 10:00 pm.
• You’ll find over 25 homes beautifully decorated in holiday lights!
•  Each house has a sign in front with a QR code. When you’re in front of the house, guess the theme (every home has a theme based on a Christmas tune or Christmas Movie ). After you’ve guessed, scan the QR code with the camera on your phone (click the link that pops up when you point the camera at the sign) to find out the answer and to answer a Christmas trivia question.  
• At the bottom of each QR Code page is a link to make a monetary donation to the Hugo Good Neighbors Food Shelf to help a local family in need this holiday season.

Rockpoint’s Valley Lights

• The show is open seven days a week from 5:00 to 10:00 pm.

• Valley Lights is open to all! It takes about 4 minutes to drive-thru so go through as many times as you want.

Light the Night at River of Life Church

• They are open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays December 3rd – 19th, 2021
• Hours are 5:00 – 8:00 pm  
• They are offering a Free Drive-thru event.
• Drive up and watch the lights while you drink some complimentary hot chocolate and cider served right to your vehicle! Park your car, tune the radio to the station, and enjoy the show. The light show lasts about 30 minutes and then repeats.

Kiwanis Holiday Lights

Sibley Park in Mankato, MN.

• The display of lights is open from November 26th through December 31st, 2021
• Hours are Sunday – Thursday from 5:00 – 9:00 pm; Friday & Saturday from 5:00 – 10:00 pm.  
• It is a free Drive-thru or Walkthrough event.
• Attractions include a display of over 1.8 million LED lights, animated lights, synthetic skating rink, warming house, visits to Santa Claus (Fri-Sun), live reindeer, and more!
• They have two radio stations within the Kiwanis Holiday Lights – 90.1 & 88.1. The welcome station as you enter the park is 88.1. It includes Christmas music, tidbits, trivia, and information on that evening’s sponsor. 90.1 FM is their “Dancing Lights” station, and they recommend visitors change their radio station upon entering the driving loop in the park.  

Armatage Holiday Light Tour

2500 W 57th St., Minneapolis, MN. 

• Open Friday, December 10th, 2021 – Sunday, December 19th, 2021
• Hours are 5:00 – 8:00pm
• This is a FREE drive-through experience.

CSE Winter Light Show 2021

500 Pillsbury Dr. SE in Minneapolis, MN. 

• The CSE Winter Light Show is presented by The Civil Engineering U of M Twin Cities.
•  The show is open December 9th – 11th, 2021
• Shows are at 5:30, 6:00, and 6:30 pm on the Civil Engineering Building Courtyard.
• The event is free and open to the public. No tickets or reservations are required.
• This high-tech light show features over 250,000 LED lights set to music written and recorded by students at the University of Minnesota.

Fox Family Farm 

6063 160th St. E. in Rosemount, MN. 

• Their display is homemade and put up by the Fox family. The outside display lights are up on Thanksgiving night and run through January 2nd, 2022

Country Lights Festival  

Lake Francis Park in Sartell, MN at 850 19th St S.

• The festivities begin December 1st and end on December 31st, 2021
• This spectacle of lights will be on from dusk until dawn.
• Walk-through 33 acres of holiday lights. Strollers, wagons, and wheelchairs are welcome.
• This display features over a million lights!
• The event is free to the public, and all are welcome!
• The Kiddie Train runs Friday and Saturday, weather permitting, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm (except Dec 24th & 25th).

Sleepy Eye Holiday Lights in Motion

Sportsman’s Park, 1000 3rd Ave NW, Sleepy Eye, MN

• Features over 350,000 lights!

• It is open seven nights a week from 5:00 – 10:00 pm.
• The festivity offers a FREE drive-thru or walk-thru event. You can view the show from the parking lot or park on the south shore of Sleepy Eye Lake for a spectacular view across the water.

• Driving Tour: The drive-thru experience is about 3/4 of a mile long, with a 30-minute audio tour.  
• Walking Experience: The Nature Illuminated walking experience is a ¾ mile-long trail your family can enjoy at their own pace.
• Driving Tour December 2nd – January 2nd: $35 – $60 per vehicle. Walking experience January 6th – 16th: $14 – $20 per person. Reserve your tickets online in advance. 
• This popular event is a magical narrated journey through brilliant lights displays. You’ll be able to see oversized lit displays of your favorite animals. 

Sertoma Winter Wonderland Drive-Thru

• It is open November 25th – December 31st, 2021
• Hours are 5:30 – 8:30 pm.
• The charge is $20/vehicle at the gate (Cash or Check Only), $10/advanced tickets, $25/small buses, limos, etc. $10 advance tickets are available at Cub and other locations in the area.

Winter Lights at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum

3675 Arboretum Drive, Chaska, MN.  

• A holiday display open November 18 – 28 (closed Thanksgiving), December 1-5, 8-12, 16-23, December. 26 – January 2, 2022
• It is not a drive-thru experience but a walk-through experience.
• The ticket price is $10 member/ $15 non-member/FREE for children ages 15 and younger.
• Winter fun includes a half-mile walk with 16 outdoor light displays  – yes, it’s stroller-friendly! During the walking tour, you can warm-up at a bonfire and roast a few marshmallows over the fire.  S’more packages are available for sale.  There are also ice sculptures as part of the display.

Larger than Life Lights

Lake Superior zoo located at 7210 Fremont St in Duluth, MN

• The light event is open November 26 – 28, December 2 – 5, 9 – 12, 16 – 19, 23, 26,30 – 31, 2021
• Thursday through Sunday from 5:00 – 8:00 pm.
• Tickets are $5 for members, $10 for non-zoo members. 2 & under are FREE.
• Santa will appear on Saturdays and the Grinch will be there every Sunday, making it the perfect photo op for the kids! 

Christmas in the Village

• Christmas in the Village is a unique adventure. It makes for the perfect weekend stop on your tour of lights! You can make holiday crafts , take a ride with a horse-drawn trolley, enjoy hot cocoa at the drug store, and more.

• It opens November 26th, 2021, and goes through January 2nd, 2022
• Sever’s is open seven nights a week, Sunday – Thursday 5:00 – 9:00 pm, and Friday – Saturday from 5:00 – 10:00 pm.
• Sundays-Thursdays – $25 per vehicle (1-7 passengers or $40 per vehicle with 8+ passengers)
• Friday & Saturday – $35 per vehicle (1-7 passengers or $50 per vehicle with 8+ passengers)
• Holiday Week (December 16-December 25th)- $35 per vehicle (1-7 passengers or $50 per vehicle with 8+ passengers)
• This holiday display is 1/2 mile long with 2,000,000+ lights. 
• As a drive-through display, vehicles can go through as many times as they’d like. The entire program lasts about 40 minutes. New this year: a selfie park!

Sam’s Christmas Village

• SANTA & his LIVE REINDEER are at Sam’s Christmas Village EVERY NIGHT, making it well worth the admission price!

• This is a fun drive thru display in the parking lot of Valleyfair.

Beginning November 27, 2023, we’ll offer both weekday and weekend tour options. During Monday-Friday, you can choose a start time between 5 and 7 p.m. During Saturday and Sunday, you’ll have the option of two different start times: 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Weekday tours run approximately 3 hours in total. With less traffic on the weekends, Saturday and Sunday tours last approximately 2.5 hours each.

When do Christmas lights start?

Christmas lights start at different times of year.

Some places get their holiday displays up as early as reasonably appropriate (pretty much right after Halloween), while others wait until a little later in the season.

You’ll likely see them trickling up throughout November.

Generally, though, you can expect major light displays to be up by at least the day after Thanksgiving or December 1 st .

How long do Christmas lights stay up?

Again, it really depends on the place and people in charge of the lighting displays.

Most people/organizations leave their Christmas lights up at least through New Year’s. (It would be very unusual for displays to go off before then.)

But January 6 th is Epiphany, so many places leave their lights up through the first week of January.

When is the best time to see Christmas lights?

Christmas light displays typically come on at sunset or shortly thereafter and stay on until bedtime-ish (9 or 10 p.m.).

They tend to run longer on weekends when people are out later.

So, each night you’ve got a several-hour window in which to see light displays.

For big for-profit displays, like drive-through light shows and light mazes, the first and last hours tend to be the least trafficked, making these ideal times to visit.

For less-organized neighborhood light displays, any time can be a good time, but getting to them early (just after sunset) or late (8 o’clock or so) can still spare you extra traffic on the roads.

What should I bring to a Christmas light display?

Along with wearing appropriate clothing (layers are essential when doing walk-through displays!), you’ll want to bring a few things with you to a Christmas lights display, especially if you’re bringing kids.

These are the things you’ll definitely want on hand:

• Snacks and Drinks: because you don’t know how long you’ll be out there
• Blankets: for bundling up the kids (and yourself) so you can keep those windows down in the car
• A Stroller or Wagon (if permitted): for walk-through displays with little ones
• Activities/Toys: because young kids may lose interest even at the most impressive light displays

How much do Christmas light shows cost?

The cost of a Christmas light show or display depends very much on where the display is and what type of display it is.

Drive-through displays may charge by either the person or the car, with per-car fees typically being the better deal of the two.

You can expect to pay at least $20/car at most for-profit drive-through light displays.

For-profit walk-through displays charge by the person and can run a wide range when it comes to pricing.

Smaller, more localized displays typically cost below $20, or even $10, if there’s any charge at all, while to see the lights at Disneyland you have to pay for a full entry (over $100 per person!).

The good news is, there are plenty of free Christmas light displays and shows as well.

To find the best ones, look for neighborhoods that hold competitions or are known for their extravagant holiday displays (if you live near a city, you almost certainly have a few of these near you).

Or choose charity light shows or displays. These displays are generally donation-based, so you can pay what you can afford.

One of my favorite parts of the holidays is climbing into the car with a cup of hot cocoa and driving around to see all of the twinkling lights around town. I’ve been to dozens of them since I live in Minnesota and am a Christmas fanatic.

Below I’ll highlight 27 of the best displays around the state from large events to private owners who have all created pure magic for the holiday season.

Here are some of the best Christmas light events around the state that are put on my churches, businesses, zoos, etc.

Some of them cost to visit while others are free. And some are walk-throughs while others are drive-thru events. Use the key below to understand what is what.

1. Bentleyville Tour of Lights

One of the most magical and popular light displays in the entire state is the Bentleyville Tour of Lights in Duluth.

Bentleyville is a favorite for a lot of people, but I truly do love it. Every time I go, it’s just so magical, especially with the views of Lake Superior.

The event started in one man’s front yard before moving to the Bayfront Festival Park and has since surpassed welcoming over 300,000 people each year to view the beautiful displays.

There are over 3 million lights strung on entrances, buildings, tunnels, displays, and more to enjoy the winter time in Duluth .

Every year my family visits Bentleyville, and we always love stopping by the firepits to roast a marshmallow. I love being able to stay warm by the fire and talk with my family about our favorite parts of the light show so far.

2. Nature Illuminated

Each year at the Minnesota Zoo, large light displays of your favorite animals fill the walking paths to make some of the best Minnesota holiday lights.

All of the animals are oversized and will surely light up the night as you walk or drive past them, feeling full of holiday cheer.

If you’d prefer not to go outside (I don’t blame you. It’s cold out there !), this one is perfect because you can drive through it and stay warm in your car. There’s a radio station to tune into so you can learn about the zoo animals as you drive through.

The drive-thru option takes place before the holiday season, typically until the start of January. After that, you can walk through the light show!

3. GLOW Holiday Festival

While this festival was once hosted at the Minnesota State Fair, it has now moved over the CHS Field, near the Union Depot.

This walk-through event features several displays with thousands of lights, making it the perfect family holiday adventure with some of the best Christmas lights Minnesota.

I really love GLOW because it’s so close to the Twin Cities. Plus, there are tons of activities going on so it’s great for kids and adults.

One of the best parts of GLOW is that each night, they choose a charity to donate a portion of their profits to.

In 2021, they donated over $100,000 to charitable partners including the Salvation Army, humane societies, and United Way.

4. First City of Lights

With 25 years of experience in providing one of the best light shows in the state, the First City of Lights in Bemidji will have its largest show yet this year.

The event is kicked off with a parade featuring several holiday-themed floats, which leads into their Night We Light ceremony. Then you can watch as Paul Bunyan Park is lit up with bright holiday lights.

After the ceremony, there will even be a fireworks show to really kick off the holiday season. You might even get to see Santa Claus or listen to some live music!

5. Kiwanis Holiday Lights

Kiwanis Holiday Lights is celebrating its 10th year in hopes of donating money to non-profit groups while showcasing its amazing light display.

After opening in 2012, the Kiwanis Holiday Lights Foundation has donated over $500,000 to non-profit groups that have volunteered their time to the event.

Each year on the night after Thanksgiving, an opening night parade kicks off the season. Then, visits with Santa happen each weekend and guests are invited to either walk or drive through the display.

During my visit to the Kiwanis Light Display a few years ago, I remember being so enthralled by all of the lights. My favorite was the giant tree in the center that really brings the whole event together.

6. CSE Winter Light Show

On the University of Minnesota campus, the College of Science and Engineering puts on a light show one weekend in December each year.

The engineering students create a light show and tune it to their own music! It’s really fun to see, especially since my boyfriend Tyler is an engineer.

Several displays are set up and the show will be synchronized to music as it gives a 360-degree show around the building.

This is definitely a unique Christmas light display in Minnesota near the Twin Cities that you don’t want to miss!

7. Nights of Lights

This small light display is pretty far north, but because it’s located in Roseau I live , I love attending it every year.

Night of Lights is an intimate light show where you can drive through the park and see the many holiday decorations.

Tyler and I walk through Night of Lights multiple times a year, and we love getting to spend time together without the crowds that you see at other displays.

8. Holiday Lights in Motion

What started with just 5 small light displays in 2014 has since turned into a magical display of Christmas lights MN with over 350,000 lights.

From cut-outs for photo ops, over 100 lit trees, trolley rides, concessions and more, you’ll have the perfect holiday celebration.

You can choose to drive or walk through the displays or head across the lake to see the lights reflecting in the water.

I personally love seeing the lights reflecting in the water. It’s such a unique perspective, and showcases Minnesota before the lakes freeze fully.

9. Spirit of the Lights

The historic Glensheen Mansion in Duluth is one of the best places to celebrate the holidays because it seriously just feels so magical.

You can walk around outside through their free outdoor display that sits right on the shore of Lake Superior.

You can also go inside the mansion and take a guided tour of the place. It’s really beautiful because there are dozens of Christmas trees and candles, so it just feels so peaceful.

I’m always freezing in winter, especially with the wind off of the lake, so they have a few small firepits that you can stop by and warm up as you walk through.

10. Sever’s Holiday Lights

From the Thanksgiving holiday weekend until the start of January, Sever’s Festivals puts on a fantastic light display.

With over 2.5 million lights dancing to some of the best holiday tunes, you can load your entire family into the car and enjoy the show.

You can see the show every night of the week during the holiday season, and be sure to look out for my favorite part – the singing penguins.

11. Zoo Lights

Walk through the paths at the Lake Superior Zoo and see the giant inflatable animals as well as several different holiday-themed decorations.

Every once in a while, Santa and some Christmas carolers will make an appearance, which is really fun and makes the experience even more festive.

If you’re bringing kids to see a light show, this is one of the best ones, since they’ll love getting to see all of the light-up animals. And did I mention there are free s’mores?

12. Christmas in Color

If you love Valleyfair in the summer months, then you’ll also love getting to see it lit up at Christmas time for Christmas in Color.

Although you can’t ride the rides, you can check out the millions of Christmas lights, that are all synchronized to holiday music.

Fun Christmas characters, lighted arches, and giant trees are just a few of the pieces of decor that you’ll see.

And to make it even better, a portion of the proceeds are donated to the Make a Wish Foundation to help kids with critical illnesses.

13. Holidazzle

** Update: Holidazzle has been canceled for 2023. This makes me so sad since it’s one of my favorite events and I know lots of people who love it.

What used to be one of Minneapolis’ most beloved Christmas parades has now become an annual festival held in Loring Park each year and one of the best holiday lights in Minneapolis.

Holidazzle is one of my favorite events since it’s all free! You can walk through the lights, ride the carousel, watch the fireworks after dark, and wander through the markets.

It’s such a fun event for the entire family, and we go every year, even as adults!

14. Celebrate the Light of the World

The Celebrate the Light of the World holiday light displays started as a family tradition for the Koosman Family to provide holiday cheer to their town.

Since then, they have handed it over to Willmar Fests, who will continue the great traditions that they have started for the community.

Their goal is to make the holiday season a bit brighter for their community, and they’re sure to do that with over 9,000 lights to enjoy.

Last year, it took over 1,000 volunteer hours to set up the entire, magical display.

15. Union Depot Holiday Tree Lighting

Another of the great holiday light shows in Minnesota is a bit different because it’s a fun tree lighting, rather than a full-on display.

The Union Depot is known as the Hub for the Holidays in St. Paul, and really is the place to be if you’re looking for fun Christmas events.

They host a huge tree-lighting ceremony at the start of December each year, so you can watch as the massive tree outside of the Union Depot is lit up.

Then later in the year, there’s an amazing European Christmas Market, the North Pole Express, and so much more to do.

16. Winter Lights

Located at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, you can enjoy some fresh air as you wander through the gardens that are decked out in holiday lights.

The self-guided walking route gives you the chance to admire the stunning lights and natural features that are found in the gardens.

In the visitor center, you’ll find a massive poinsettia tree that is made out of over 500 living plants, which is unique to this light display in Minnesota.

17. Langeness Lights

This family sure knows how to do Christmas big! We lived in Forest Lake a few years ago and visited this multiple times because we loved it so much.

With lights synchronized to fun holiday music on 93.1 FM, you can enjoy the show with the tunes playing in the background.

They even have some fun characters that “sing” along to the music such as the Grinch and a gnome. Plus, the owners were there when I visited greeting visitors and handing out candy canes.

18. Christmas on Savanna

Beautiful twinkling lights, large inflatables, and synchronized music make this home one of the best places to visit near Chaska.

They’ve got a huge nutcracker in the front yard that almost seems like it’s going to reach the top of their home!

I love that their yard is totally packed to the brim with decor. It’s such a fun display and you can see how much hard work is put into it.

18. Candy Cane Lane

This beautiful display was set up in memory of the family’s mom and grandma whose favorite movie was National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

They have a walking path to make your way through the features of some of their beautiful lights.

The best part about their display is that they collect donations for a fundraiser for Rescued Pets are Wonderful ( RPAW ). I love this so much because I’m a huge animal lover.

So if you visit, be sure to bring along a small donation to give to the animals.

19. Shakopee Winter Wonderland

This beautiful holiday display has just about everything you could imagine to make the holidays special.

From a lit-up display Ferris wheel and train to a walk-through tunnel with hot chocolate awaiting you at the end.

Your kids can even visit with Santa when he’s around and isn’t too busy at the North Pole. It’s such a fun gathering and I really appreciate that this family puts it together each year.

20. Palmer’s Christmas Light Display

You know someone really loves Christmas and putting a smile on another’s face when they handmake an entire display for others to enjoy. At Palmer’s Christmas Light Display, that’s exactly what you’ll get.

Drive through the display, enjoy the lights, and listen to holiday music. Driving through the displays is one of my favorite things, and it really gets you in the spirit.

Then before you leave, visit Santa around the fire pit and grab a candy cane to enjoy on the road home.

21. Trista Lights

This is a unique show if I’ve ever seen one! Run by Epic Light Shows, the same people who run the Sever’s Christmas light show, this will really blow your mind!

This is a fully computerized show in which the entire house is lit up in over 17,000 lights and synced to fun, upbeat music.

The show isn’t on every night, so you’ll want to check the schedule before going, but if you’re lucky enough to see it, you’ll see why it’s so popular. It’s amazing!

22. Sauk Rapids Light Display

At this Sauk Rapids home, the entire family is at work to produce an epic Christmas display for their community.

Enjoy over 20,000 lights plus tons of inflatables that really bring out the holiday spirit in everyone.

Have your kiddos drop off a letter to Santa in the mailbox provided and get a letter sent back to you! This could be such a fun family tradition to start!

23. Christmas in Wadena

This display takes plenty of time (at least 400 hours!) to set up and make it as beautiful as it is, but the community sure loves the owners for it!

Since 2008, this Christmas light display in Minnesota has been providing holiday cheer to all of Wadena’s residents. It’s unique because of its animated nature.

The music and display have been carefully created and put together by a talented musician who has drawn in thousands of visitors over the years.

The second you get to Christmas in Wadena, you’ll be able to tell how much heart and love has been put into this display.

In the past 14 years, donations from visitors have raised a total of almost $25,000 and over 5,000 pounds of food, all of which is donated to the local food shelf.

25. Holiday Lights Tour in Brooklyn Park

This display is a bit different than most of the others because it actually features many houses.

Each year in Brooklyn Park, residents can enter their homes to be included in the Holiday Lights Tour. So you won’t get to see just one house, but multiple!

When Are Christmas Light Displays On in MN?

Typically most Christmas light displays are turned on by the 1st of December, and some even earlier, starting the weekend after Thanksgiving.

Most of them then run until either Christmas Day or sometimes into January.

Each display is different, and typically has its hours and opening and closing dates listed on its individual websites.

There are many places to see the best Christmas lights in Minnesota including Bentleyville, the Minnesota Zoo, Glensheen Mansion, and the MN State Fiargounds.

The largest holiday light show in Minnesota is Bentleyville, which is located in Bayfront Festival Park in Duluth.

The GLOW Holiday festival is the light festival that was once hosted at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. It now is at the CHS Field and is no longer at the fairgrounds.

Yes, the MN Zoo hosts Nature Illuminated each winter during the holiday season.

GLOW Holiday Festival

CHS Field, 360 N Broadway St, St Paul, MN 55101 CHS Field is converted to a walking tour of holiday decorations and Christmas delights. There will still be a parade of dozens seasonal scenes featuring a plethora of holiday lights, a 60-foot illuminated tree and an art-created mosaic flame, a festive Santa Land, and other attractions. Grab a map and follow the trail to find a “sElfie Plaza”, an enchanted forest, a s’mores station, concessions and more. Tickets: $12.75-$20.75/pp. November 16-December 31, 2023.

2685 Viking Circle, Eagan, MN 55121 The shine is most certainly still on the newest drive-through Christmas light experience in the Twin Cities. Expect it to bring the glitz – like a see-it-to-believe Holiday Barbie display, prehistoric dinos and a giant lit monster truck.  Runs November 17-December 31, 2023. MORE WINTER FUN AT VIKING LAKES: You don’t have to drive through the holiday lights display to feel festive, there is Winter SKOLstice fun to be had at Viking Lakes . Christmas in the Village

Dakota City Heritage Village, 4008 220th Street W., Farmington, MN 55024 The historic buildings are decorated and illuminated throughout the village. But don’t just admire the outsides — stop inside to see the projects in the blacksmith shop, what’s cooking on the homestead stove, Christmas carols in the church and more. Santa is available for visits on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from 5-9pm. Free and open to the Public from Friday, November 25-December 31, 2022.

Sam’s Christmas Village

Kids can visit with Santa and his live reindeer every night, reserve a s’more cabin and see beautiful lights. Both walk through and drive through tours are available. Admission is $10 for Kids and $20 for adults. Cabins start at $119 for the evening (but not overnight).

Sertoma Winter Wonderland at the Northland Arboretum

Sleepy Eye Holiday Lights in Motion

Sportsman Park, 1000 3rd Ave NW, Sleepy Eye, MN 56085 Distance from the Twin Cities : Approximately 2-hour drive. Families can choose to drive or walk through the exhibits. Tune your FM radio to 89.1 to hear favorite Holiday tunes synced to the light shows. Some years they have offered horse-drawn carriage rides, but it looks like it will be a tractor-drawn hay wagon ride in 2022. Reserve seats here if you want to guarantee a spot . Come to the stable: a living nativity.

Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 5426 12th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55417 (corner of 11th Ave S and W 54th St) Guests are invited to the Stable for a family-friendly afternoon featuring a live nativity complete with Mary, Joseph, angels, shepherds, live animals, and, of course, baby Jesus. The organizers tell us they are taking 2023 off and re-evaluating the event. We’ll watch to see what happens in 2024.

Note that Christmas in Color at Valleyfair and Holiday in Lights at the Anoka County Fairgrounds are not happening this year. Also, Holiday Lights in the Park at Phalen Park in St. Paul ended years ago. People still ask about it, though.

The Estate is transformed into an illuminated winter wonderland, with over 20 miles of musical synchronized lights strung over 20 acres of lakeshore property. This outdoor walking experience permits guests to stroll the vineyards and grounds and enjoy a variety of attractions like Candy Cane Lane, life-size Nativity scene, photo opportunity at Santa’s Sleigh, real live winter llamas, inflatable Snowman Ball, children’s Snow Maze, kids Boot Hockey Arena, and Nana’s Gingerbread House! Once you arrive, guests also have the opportunity to purchase Holly Trolley rides in the Wine Store for a special guided tour of the decorated grounds.

Santa will arrive every night from November 17-December 23 from 5:00-7:30 P.M. during the Christmas season. All guests will enjoy the pleasure of meeting the famous Mr. Claus as he wanders the Spirit of Winter event. Grab a hot chocolate, cookies, or roast a s’more at the S’more Station! Adults can enjoy mulled wine, boozy hot cocoa, local brews, and our full range of wine at the Polar Bear Bar! And the Blizzard Bistro will also be serving up items like chili and flatbreads. Dakota City Heritage Village is the place to find warmth, holiday cheer and goodwill the first two weekends in December, Saturday and Sunday, December 2, 3, 9, and 10 from 3:00-8:00 P.M. on the Dakota County Fairgrounds in Farmington. All ages will enjoy the many displays and buildings that reflect the sights, sounds, and scents of the season. The buildings are heated and horse-drawn trolleys will be available to take visitors throughout the village. Hot chocolate, apple cider, hot soups and ice cream are available in the Drug Store. Children will also enjoy crafts and writing letters to Santa in the schoolhouse. The letters can be mailed in the special North Pole mailbox, or taken directly to Santa when they visit with him in the Depot. Choir groups and musicians will be sharing music in the Church. Sing-along Christmas Carols will be part of the program. Some of the choir groups will be strolling through the village as they sing. Demonstrations will take place in the Carpenter shop, Harris House, McMenomy House and the Blacksmith Shop.

Enjoy fresh air as you explore outdoor light displays, highlighting flowers, trees and the beauty of nature, on the one-mile, self-guided walking route. New for 2023 will be a color-changing tunnel, a Winter Village on Scarecrow Hill and a field of sunflowers, all with more lights than ever before! Revisit the 16-foot Weeping Willow in a new space and walk through a giant apple, which pays tribute to the Arboretum’s Horticultural Research Center’s apple breeding, including the Honeycrisp apple. Roast marshmallows over an open fire at the S’mores Village (s’mores kits for four people on sale for $7) or visit the Oswald Visitor Center for sandwiches, light snacks and a full cash bar. The Arboretum’s Oswald Visitor Center and Snyder Building will be decorated for the season with a 25-foot Cuetlaxóchitl Tree (pronounced “kwet-la-SHO-she”) (Poinsettia Tree) and multiple seasonally decorated, fresh-cut trees. The Cuetlaxóchitl Tree, created using more than 500 living plants, will display colors of red, white and pink poinsettias. You might also hear holiday tunes from local performers from our live Winter Music Series, offered on most weekends. In return, they are able to “earn” a donation for their nonprofit. Since 2012, we’ve donated back over $590,000 to those nonprofits who have provided volunteers. We also accept donations for area food shelves during the event.

Last month, the town of Norwood Young America tragically lost our beloved David Rain to the battle against mental health. David was the school’s Band Director for almost 20 years and the town’s Santa Claus for the last 10. His bright spirit touched so many lives, so in his memory, I’ve decided to create a Christmas light show like no other. The audio that accompanies the spectacle is taken from a heartfelt performance by David himself. During the Christmas Eve service in 2020 at All Saints Lutheran Church, David graced us all with his beautiful trombone melodies, and now, his music will light up our hearts once again. Holiday Tree Lighting & Movie Night

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the 2012 Union Depot building restoration and the tree lighting includes a special celebration. The evening includes the unveiling of the St. Paul Winter Carnival 2023 button followed by live entertainment from The Mistletones and the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Finish the evening with the classic holiday movie, Elf. The tree will be lit through the remainder of December on the North Plaza, the perfect backdrop for family holiday photos!
