Background on the Burgundy Wine Region

Burgundy is such a legendary wine region that it’s home to multiple UNESCO World Heritage sites . The Côte de Nuits , one of the most well-known sub-regions in Burgundy, is a paradise for those seeking an intimate experience with the world of fine wines. Opting for a private tour here lets you experience the heart of Burgundy. It’s home to many of the region’s grand cru estates, where you can enjoy exceptional red wines straight from ancient wine cellars. It’s particularly celebrated for its Pinot Noir-based wines and prestigious wine estates, many of which produce wines that have aging potential far beyond those based in new world wine regions.

Aside from Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune stands out as another noteworthy wine destination known for its exquisite white wine, primarily crafted from Chardonnay grapes. Here, you can participate in private wine tours with the wine producers themselves. You’ll be guided through both large houses and family-run domains, uncovering the secrets of wine production that have been honed over centuries. Each wine estate in the Burgundy region is a story in itself, often tied to the rich history of the area, including the tumultuous times of the French Revolution and the evolution of viticulture through the ages. The best ways for wine lovers to experience the Burgundy include structured day trips or self-guided tours along the wine route. Whether it’s the Golden Slope of the Côte d’Or or the heart of Chablis, each area presents a unique story of grape varieties, wine production, and local traditions.

Burgundy is not just about tasting amazing wines; it’s about soaking up the culture and history of the area. From medieval villages, the historic Clos de Vougeot Castle, to the Côte Chalonnaise, every stop is a discovery. The region’s culinary delights, like the famous Beef Bourguignon, perfectly complement bottles of Pinot Noir. Venture past the stone walls of ancient domains, and into the heart of local life, enriched with fine wines, great food, and a treasure trove of history.

What is the best time of year to visit Burgundy for wine tourism?

The ideal time to visit Burgundy for a wine-focused trip is during the late summer and early fall, specifically from August to October. This period aligns with the grape harvest (vendanges) when the vineyards are bustling with activity. The weather is generally pleasant, allowing for comfortable exploration of the vineyards and outdoor tastings. However, if you prefer quieter visits and cooler weather, spring (April to June) is also a great time to explore the region.

How can I get around the Burgundy wine region?

The most flexible way to explore Burgundy is by car, as it allows you to visit various vineyards and towns at your own pace. Car rentals are available in major towns and cities like Dijon and Beaune . Sébastien, our sommelier and guide, was incredible.

His knowledge of the wine of Burgundy and this region was absolutely precise. We could ask a question about the wine or the Burgundy region and receive a clear and specific answer. The best wine tour I could take.

A beautiful discovery, old-fashioned cobblestone streets, very typical market and local products that make you want to taste and buy everything… We visited the hospice and the patriarch’s cellars. Eggs meurette, beef bourguignon… A delicacy… I want to do it again!

Antonin, our guide, was very attentive. He knows his stuff very well and showed us some magical places, especially during the harvest period! He pampered us without overdoing it! In addition, he was on time and picked us up at the hotel in a very clean vehicle. We had a very pleasant time. Perfect tastings, especially at the Château de Marsannay.

  • WorldFlier22 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Wine Tasting near Dijon I've been on 2 tours like this and have always liked them. It's a small group where you get to know some people from around the world and visit a couple of nice wineries while learning about the area, the wineries themselves and ultimately the wine. This experience was similar but worse for a couple of reasons. Starting with the positives: The van that held the 6 of us was relatively comfortable and the ride from each location wasn't very long. The wineries themselves were excellent. They included great viewing areas of the winery, a quiet and dedicated place to try the different wines, for one of the wineries there was a guide who was very helpful and informative, and at each winery we tried 6 different wines. The last wine that we tried was a $200+ bottle, which was exquisite. The negative of the trip mainly had to do with the guide. He was extremely nice but unfortunately: while driving and describing what we were going to see and reviewing the history of the area, he did not talk loud enough at all to hear. So for 2+ hours of total driving we missed everything that he was talking about, which I consider a huge negative. We were in the 3rd row and the rattling of the van's cargo area coupled with his quiet talking made it frustrating. Secondly, while we did the wine tastings, he gave us little feedback as to his thoughts on the wine or any real insight into the wine that we were drinking, which was also a major negative. So, overall, great wineries and wine, but get in the first row of the van and make sure the guide is experienced Read more Written June 2, 2024

I researched a number of tour operators suggested by our hotel concierge, and opted for Authentica. Our two days of touring exceeded all expectations thanks to our most knowledgeable and passionate guide, Antonin. We saw and encountered a lot, and never felt rushed or hustled. This was the ultimate Burgundy wine experience because of Antonin's tireless efforts and his ability to select a wide range of wineries to create the perfect experience. We came away from these two days of touring with a whole new outlook and appreciation for this part of France and the wine which is produced there. Thank you, Antonin. Read more Written May 31, 2024

  • travellinglight2024 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A must! I really enjoyed this tour with Pierre and Authentica Tours. Pierre was a very knowledgeable and passionate guide. Both of the tastings were wonderful experiences and the hosts at the caves were excellent. I tasted some of the best wines I've ever had in my life. I am truly in awe of the magic of Burgundy wines! My only suggestion is that it would be good to receive an email confirmation/reminder from Authentica Tours a day or two before the tour. Most of the hotels and tours that I have booked in France provide this, so I was a little concerned that I hadn't heard from Authentica the day before the tour and reached out by email. I received a prompt reply that my tour was confirmed, and the email also provided helpful photos and information about the meeting place, so I was reassured. However, I would prefer to receive the confirmation email rather than initiating the contact myself, and I had not previously received the meeting place information. Overall, a great experience, thank you very much Pierre and Authentica! Read more Written May 16, 2024

He was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Have been on wine tours around the world and this was the best, in part to the area and history and the wine but also in large part to our guide. One tip, bring cash as you will likely want to tip your guide but some wineries will offer a small cash discount. Read more Written May 2, 2024

Get to know Burgundy

Eastern France’s Burgundy is a prime winegrowing country. This area was once covered by a large sea, leaving today’s vineyards with unusual mineral-rich limestone and unique terroir . Combined with the vineyards’ privileged location and a favorable climate, the area produces some of the world’s great wines. Wine aficionados will know the names Chablis, Côte de Nuits, Beaune, Mâcon, and Nuits-Saint-Georges AOCs. Walking through the vines with a winemaker is an unforgettable experience that gives insight into the fascinating play between grape varieties, terroir, and cultivation and production techniques that influence the final product. Many of the winegrowing techniques were developed and the plots divided by monks a millennium ago.

Beyond its wine, Burgundy boasts a rich history. Grandiose architect, charming villages, and an impressive concentration of medieval castles and churches are evidence of that history. The Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy, the Hospice de Beaune, and the Fontenay Abbey are but a few of the region’s great monuments. The Benedictine Cluny and Cistercian Citeaux monasteries were two of Europe’s great medieval monasteries, growing to wield tremendous religious and intellectual influence throughout the continent.

Beautiful view of famous Cistercian Abbey of Fontenay Burgundy, France

Among the French, Borgogne is loved for its nature. It boasts rolling hills, navigable canals, pristine lakes, and extensive cycling trails. Sports and nature enthusiasts can go walking, biking, rafting, canoeing, and sailing. The Morvan National Park is full of dense woodland and majestic flora and fauna.

From the 10th through the 15th centuries, the Duchy of Burgundy and the Free Country of Burgundy were separated from France. The large and powerful kingdoms flourished. Their territories grew to include parts of modern-day Alsace and Lorraine, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. They were a fearsome enemy of France and an ally of the English during the Hundred Years’ War. When the last Duke Charles the Bold was killed in 1477 the kingdom was annexed into France. The wealthy Burgundians left behind stunning castles, churches, and half-timbered houses.

As a world-famous wine region, it comes as no surprise that Burgundian cuisine incorporates lots of wine. Be sure to try to stick to your-ribs boeuf bourguignon (a stew of beef, mushrooms, onions, and carrots in wine). Coq au vin is a similar dish made with chicken. You can also find wine poached eggs in the surprising oeufs en meurette .

When to go: Despite the region’s beauty, Burgundy remains off-the-beaten-path for many tourists, even during summer months. The long sunny days make this a beautiful time to tour the area. Harvest season, from August to October, is a wonderful time to come with beautiful fall colors.

By train: Dijon is a 1 1/2-hour ride from Paris by high-speed TGV train.

By car: The region is about a 2-hour drive from Lyon and 3 1/2 hours from Paris.

What to Eat and Drink:

Cheese: Local epoisses has a reputation as one of the world’s stinkiest cheese. Try it if you dare!

The region also boasts Brillat-Savarin , Trou du Cru , and Mâconnais giving Burgundy 4 AOC appellation cheeses.

French cheese and bread

Wine: Splurge on any of the wines from the Côtes d’Or , Côtes de Nuits , or Côtes de Beaune for the very best that Burgundy has to offer. Burgundy wines exclusively use Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varieties.

On a tighter budget Beaujolais from further south are worth trying. They’re famous for being the first wines harvested each year. Their release in November is an excuse to party. Drink them young.

Winetasting in Beaune

Beaune is the wine capital of Burgundy. Surrounded by prized vineyards, Beaune has wonderful wine bars and cellars to explore. Its 15th-century Hospices de Beaune is one of France’s great buildings, with beautiful half-timbered galleries and an ornate, polychrome glazed-tile roof. The hospice itself owns a prestigious wine estate whose wines are auctioned off during the Les Trois Glorieuses festival every November. During the summer the most important monuments in the city are illuminated by colorful projections that recount Beaune’s history.

Route des Grands Crus de Bourgogne

Dating to 1937, the Grands Crus’s tour was France’s first official wine route. It is still one of its most remarkable, stretching through 37 postcard-perfect villages and 40 miles of lush Côte d’Or vineyards. Hundreds of vineyards are accessible from  small family-owned producers or famous estates. The price and quality of the wine, in Burgundy, is determined by the excellence of the soil and fields on which the grapes were grown. The route’s most famous stops are Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Pommard. Only the most venerated labels receive the distinction “Grand-Cru.” This rare title confirms the astonishing vinicole quality of the best French wines.

burgundy wine tours from dijon

Dijon was the capital of the Duchy of Burgundy and one of medieval Europe’s great cities. It is still a beautiful place to visit with the stately Ducal Palace, soaring Philippe le Bon Tower, and the medieval half-timbered houses in the city center. Perhaps the city is best known today for being a gastronomic destination. Bœuf bourguignon and coq au vin are two of its most famous dishes that use the local wines. It is also famous for its mustard, gingerbread, and ham. Explore its food yourself in the covered Les Halles food market or Michelin-star restaurants. The city makes for a great gateway to the Côte de Nuits vineyards.
