Sugar Camp Scenic Byway is the gateway to Branson

Loop through the Mark Twain National Forest!

  • Featured Trip Guides

Created by Branson - April 25th 2018

B ranson is best known for its numerous (and awesome) old-school attractions, but there are few things more classic than a good, old-fashioned scenic drive. A spin down a road such as the Mark Twain National Forest's Sugar Camp Scenic Byway (with the windows down, of course) is the perfect way to really experience a place. Of course, on your way, you'll pass by more than a few fun things to see and do; this is Branson, after all!

Lake Taneycomo

Start off your adventure at Lake Taneycomo. It's a unique body of water: when Table Rock Dam is generating power, it looks like a lake, but otherwise, it appears more like a river. The Dam turned Taneycomo from a warm water lake into a cold water one, allowing for more fish to inhabit the waters. Record-breaking trout can be caught here, and the lake offers both fly and bait fishing. You'll find parks and marinas along its shore, as well as a few public access points (including the Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery). One of the best places to enjoy the lake is from the historic downtown Branson Landing. The mile-long lighted boardwalk offers shopping, dining, and excursions galore.

1 Mount Pleasant Winery

Leave the lake and head for the hills for to relax and enjoy the offerings at Mount Pleasant Winery. Its history dates to 1859, when two brothers from Germany, George and Frederick Muench, established the winery. They built the cellars in 1881, using local wood and limestone. During Prohibition, much of the vineyards and wine-making equipment were burned, but the cellars survived and are still used today to age estate-bottled wines and ports. Today, the winery has been revived, and the proprietors now grow 12 grape varieties on 78 acres. The winery has a spacious tasting room (that includes a terrace with a view) where you can sample award-winning Mt. Pleasant wines and even take a cellar tour.

Moonshine Beach State Recreation Area

Branson, MO

Table Rock Lake also offers lots of beauty and fun on the water. A favorite spot to visit on the lake? Moonshine Beach State Recreation Area. It's a spacious, sandy stretch of beach that almost feels seashore-esque. There's a boat ramp available here, as well as a visitor center and some nice hiking trails, for anyone who might get bored sunning themselves on the sand or swimming in the clear, blue waters of Table Rock Lake.

3 Branson Treehouse Adventures & RV Park

If you're looking for a truly unique experience that will take your Branson trip over the edge, book a night at Branson Treehouse Adventures. They have cabins and campsites for RVs and tents, but the treehouses are obviously the way to go here. They're gorgeously designed cabins on stilts that put you among the trees. Some come with swanky bonus features like outdoor showers, jetted tubs, gas fireplaces and private porches. Even to get a cottage with real beds, cable TV, and private bathrooms is a lot comfier than your average night of cabin camping! Stop by the hospitality center in the morning to grab coffee and a pastry before heading out for another day of fun in Branson.

4 Talking Rocks Cavern

Believe it or not, beaches and lakes and forests with treehouse cabins are just the beginning of the natural wonders in Branson! There's even excitement to be found underground, like at Talking Rocks Cavern. The first man to explore it called it "Fairy Cave," because the crystals and unique geological formations made it look like “a subterranean fairyland.” Today, you can take an hour-long guided tour of Talking Rocks Cavern, which provides a great overview of the history and geology of the cave. Back above ground, you can take part in the other activities offered at the site, like mini-golf, hiking, and gemstone mining.

5 Mark Twain National Forest (Ava/Cassville/Willow Springs District)

The Mark Twain National Forest is a sprawling, wild woodland covering about 3,068,800 acres all across southern Missouri. In a lot of ways, this part of the National Forest is where the forests that mark the Eastern United States start to fade into the more desert-y land to the West. Stands of oak-hickory and shortleaf pine give way to open glades of tall prairie grasses. It's a region of shady hollows, rugged hills surrounded by ridgetops and stony slopes, lush pastures and crystal-clear streams. This district is home to the Forest's only three scenic drives: Blue Buck Knob, Glade Top Trail, and (of course) Sugar Camp.

Roaring River State Park

Cassville, MO

Roaring River State Park is a haven of outdoor recreation nestled in a deep valley in the southwest Ozark hills. The park boasts loads of amenities, like a nature center, developed campgrounds with cabins, even a swimming pool and a conference center, complete with an inn and onsite restaurant. The trout fishing here is renowned, and there are lots of opportunities to hike as well. The Deep Leap Overlook Trail offers a view of a fish hatchery; the Devil's Kitchen Trail leads past caves and rocky outcroppings that were, according to legend, used as hiding places by soldiers during the Civil War; and the Eagle's Nest Trail takes you past an old homestead to one of the highest points in the park.

7 Sugar Camp Scenic Byway

The Sugar Camp Scenic Byway is 28 miles of pure Ozark beauty. It climbs rolling hills for sweeping views, then winds down into forested valleys and through farms and pastures. Pack a picnic and hop out of the car to bask in the views for a moment at one of the two spots that serve as rest areas: Onyx Cave and Sugar Camp Tower. It's a quick drive that can be done in an hour or two, depending on where and how long you stop, but it's a worthy destination that makes the hustle and bustle of Branson feel a world away.

Dogwood Canyon Nature Park

On your way back into Branson, make one more stop at the Dogwood Canyon Nature Park. The canyon is a jagged, waterfall-and-cave-lined ravine surrounded by forests and meadows (which are home to long-horned cattle, American bison, and elk!). Single-day admission gets you access to all of this beauty, along with the treehouse, an artifacts display, the Nature & Conservation Center, the mill, and the Hickory Ridge Trail. Go for a two-day pass to get additional fun, including the two-hour Wildlife Tram Tour, a pass for catch-and-release trout fishing, access to more trails and discounts on Segway tours and horseback rides.

A drive through Branson and into the forests around it is the perfect way to experience all the city has to offer. Not only will you get a taste for the fun in town, you'll also get to immerse yourself in the Ozarks, which provide the backbone of Branson's distinctive personality.

Why Are There So Many Caves In The Ozarks?

People who are new to the area are surprised to find out that the Ozarks are actually filled with caves, over 6,000 of them!

But why are there so many caves in this area?

One reason is the geology of the Ozarks. The Ozarks are located on a large plate of limestone, which is a type of rock that is easily eroded by water. As rainwater seeps into the ground, it slowly dissolves the limestone, forming underground channels and caverns.

The Ozarks also have a lot of sinkholes, which are holes in the ground that form when the roof of a cave collapses. Sinkholes can be found all over the Ozarks, and they often have caves underneath them.

Lastly, the climate of the Ozarks is perfect for cave formation. The region experiences mild winters and ample rainfall, both of which help to dissolve limestone and create underground caverns.

Are The Caves In Branson Missouri Safe?

Caves are one of the most fascinating environments on earth, and exploring them can be a truly exhilarating experience. However, it’s important to keep safety in mind while caving, as there are many potential hazards.

Most of the caves near Branson are paved and well-traveled but it never hurts to learn a bit of cave safety and etiquette before going.

First of all, always check the weather forecast before heading into a cave, as heavy rains can create flash flooding. It’s also a good idea to wear sturdy shoes with good traction, as caves can be slippery.

And of course, bring a flashlight – or two! – as caves can be very dark.

Most importantly, never go caving alone; always bring at least one other person with you. By following these simple safety tips, you can explore caves to your heart’s content – and stay safe while doing so.

Have fun out there!

As Branson is actually located within the Ozark Mountains, it would be rude not to swing by! This expansive mountain range spreads across five states; Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Oklahoma, and Kansas.

The Ozark National Forest itself comprises 1.2 million acres which are abundant with hiking trails that you can explore independently. Thickly packed with trees, mountain vistas and cascading waterfalls, the scenery is unreal. Even spending a day road tripping around this epic region will blow your mind.

Alternatively, if you want to get your adrenaline kick, then consider booking the Ozark Off-Road ATV Adventure . You can zoom around in your own all-terrain vehicle along the trails of the Shepherd of the Hills, following the tracks of your guide. Or hop in the back and hang on whilst your experienced guide navigates the wilderness!

#3 – Springfield, MO

Springfield, MO

Less than an hour by car, Springfield is another easy day trip from Branson. For those without a rental, you can hop on the public bus. The city is the third-largest in the state of Missouri and is jam-packed with awesome things to do.

Founded by the French-born King Louis IX, the city pays homage to its roots with a massive annual Mardi Gras parade. It’s considered to be the largest in the US after New Orleans in fact. The Branson Scenic Railway launches from the downtown neighbourhood and offers two routes. The northern route travels through the Missouri countryside, passing through Galena and the James River Valley. Meanwhile, the southern route stretches down into northwest Arkansas and over the Barren Fork Trestle. Each route is a 64km miles round-trip and takes around two hours to complete. So, in theory – you can tackle them both on the same day.

Top of the Rock Branson Missouri

Last Updated on January 19, 2023 by Lori

If you’re planning a vacation to Branson, Missouri, you’ll want to make time for the Top of the Rock Branson Cave tour! This top Branson attraction is an experience that all ages will love and one of our favorite family attractions while on our recent visit to Branson, MO.

This post contains affiliate links which means if you click on a link and make a purchase, I will earn a commission at no additional cost to you. Please see our  Disclosure Policy  for more information.

Our family had not visited Branson in years, so when we were planning a trip for my parent’s 63rd wedding anniversary, I knew I needed to find activities that everyone would enjoy.

After researching the best things to do in Branson, MO, I found Johnny Morris’ Top of the Rock Ozarks Heritage Preserve .

Top of the Rock Branson Missouri

Top Of The Rock Branson

What is Top of the Rock? You might think that it’s a drive to the top of a mountain where you will see views for miles.

But, it’s actually a 2 1/2 mile golf cart tour along the Lost Canyon Cave & Nature Trail featuring beautiful views of Table Rock Lake, waterfalls, and a bar in a cave!

Golf Cart Cave Tour Top Of The Rock Branson

We visited in early June. I purchased tickets online a few months earlier, so I could reserve the earliest time available to avoid crowds for my parents.

While this saved us time when arriving, I did see many people just walking in to purchase their tickets.

Excited to start our cave tour on our golf cart, we were the first to arrive that day!

Note: When you enter the park, there is a $10 per car fee payable by credit card only.

Parking the car was easy so early in the morning, and we were happy my parents didn’t have to walk too far to get to the Welcome Center.

Branson Top of the Rock Welcome Center

We quickly learned, however, that we would have to wait for our tour to start.

When we walked into the Welcome Center to check-in, we were informed that a tree had fallen along the path and needed to be cleared away. Plus, some repairs needed to be made in the cave.

The guest services person explained that they hoped to get the pathway cleared in the next hour.

Since the ticket for Lost Canyon Cave also includes admittance to the Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum, she suggested taking the free shuttle from the Welcome Center to the museum to pass the time.

Gift Shop at Top of the Rock Branson

We decided to stay and browsed the gift shop while we waited. After about a 2-hour wait, they announced that the path was open, and we could line up for our golf cart.

What To Expect On The Lost Canyon Cave Golf Cart Tour

Entrance to Cave Trail Branson MO

If you have pre-purchased your ticket online, you can follow the signs in the Welcome Center to go outside to line up for the golf cart tour.

Either pre-print your tickets; or, as I did, add the tickets to your Apple Wallet.

Having them in my Apple Wallet made it very easy for the attendants to scan all four of our tickets, and I didn’t have to print them out and carry them with me.

The electric carts are available as either a two-seat or four seats depending on the number of people in your party. If it’s raining, the golf cart has a roof; or, the roof can be rolled back for better viewing!

Pay attention to the screen in the golf cart too! As you drive along, the screen changes telling you about the rock formations, bats, squirrels, and the most important thing – what drinks are available in the Bat Bar!

How Long Does The Top of the Rock Tour Take?

The two-and-a-half-mile golf cart tour takes approximately 50 minutes. Time spent on the trail depends on whether you stop the cart at the designated pull-offs to take in the views, take photos, or just continue driving along the path.

There are quite a few pull-offs with great photo ops. Routes are perfectly planned for parking the cart and viewing areas.

Waterfall at Top of the Rock Branson

We stopped at several areas to get out and look at the views but not all. Our entire tour took about an hour.

What Will You See Driving The Top of the Rock Cave & Nature Trail

One thing we realized is if you don’t pay attention, you will miss a lot! Don’t miss all the details in the fencing. They are perfectly placed and very intricate.

branson driving tour

The tour begins at the top of the waterfall. As you make your way along the path, you will be in front of 2-3 waterfalls merging into one. Then, finally, you are at the bottom where they all come together.

We also enjoyed all the covered bridges. And be sure to Look Down when they tell you to!

branson driving tour

Of course, one of the highlights of the tour was the Bat Bar Cave. The drink menu is listed on the screen in your golf cart and is also posted in huge letters on the wall as you pull into the cave.

branson driving tour

Their specialty drink is the Bat’s Bite Lemonade. The drink sounded interesting, but it was still early in the day for us, so we opted for bottled water and a diet coke.

Once you have your drink, you will continue through the cave where we were surprised to see another awesome waterfall.

There are signs all along the pathway where you might need to Swing Wide – be sure to pay attention or you might hit some rocks!

Waterfalls At Top Of The Rock Branson

One of the most fun parts of the cart tour was driving right next to the waterfall!

There are quite a few waterfalls to enjoy during the cave tour at Top of the Rock.

I also recommend stopping at the overlook where you can see beautiful views of Table Rock Lake in the distance.

Top of the Rock Golf Cart Tour Prices

Top of the Rock has what’s called Dynamic Pricing. The ticket price you pay today may not be the price of the ticket tomorrow. It all depends on the time of year and demand.

I had never heard of this type of pricing for an attraction, but it came up as people were asking for a refund for the tour being closed for repairs. Some were planning to return the next day, but the agent explained that they could not guarantee the ticket price would be the same as what they paid that day.

i love what i saw! we r coming to branson, missouri in november. dates are not sure yet. This would be a good spot to go to. Thank you!!!!!!!!

I am ALSO heading back to Branson in November and plan to go back to Top of the Rock! I can’t wait to see what it’s like in the fall. Have fun!

Thank you for your very complete review.oved the sense of humor you added.

We will be in Branson the weekend of the April 21. How do I go about purchasing tickets for the golf cart ride through the cave and is there a lot of walking from the parking lot to get to the golf carts?

Hi Michelle! Sorry I didn’t see this! Go to the website and purchase your tickets! The parking lot is just outside the entrance to Top of the Rock. Remember there is also a per car fee to enter the park. My parents loved it so much we went two times within a couple of months! If you want to take a chance, you CAN purchase your ticket at the door. Hope this helps and have fun!!

How long does it take to get through the cave? Asking for a claustrophobic friend!

Hi Annette! I am so claustrophobic but didn’t even notice I was in a cave! There is so much to look at! You start the cave tour by driving up to the bar. Get a cold soda, water, or other beverage. Then you will see a very tall waterfall! I was busy taking photos as we were driving through (and trying not to get wet!) but didn’t feel I was in a cave at all! I hope you can go to Top of the Rock – it’s a one-of-a-kind experience!

How long are you in the actual cave? Do you go long periods without seeing sky?? My claustrophobia is wondering- lol!

  • Rhonda H 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Enjoying the lights without worrying about driving in a place I’m unfamiliar with. 👍 Best money I’ve ever spent, To enjoy the lights without driving around, avoiding other crazy drivers. Tour guide Mike was very informative and a load of fun. Went to the château on the lake, drove through big Cedar Lodge, and the joy of lights. Altogether about three hours. Big Cedar Lodge is beautiful with all the lights. It was nice not having to drive & worry about all the other traffic and pedestrians everywhere! Read more Written December 28, 2023
  • F5632LGsharone 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Worst tour ever Do not be deceived, this is more of a hotel bathroom room tour, you will not be going through the Shepard of the hills display, we were dropped off at the first hotel to use the bathroom and see 3 or 4 gingerbread houses, the singers had quit singing, water falls without water, stoped at another hotel and told to use the bathroom if you needed to or not and see another gingerbread house that wasn’t even a gingerbread house, we stopped in the Hilton hotel parking lot to wait 6 minutes for a 5 minute spray of water that couldn’t be seen from the seats on the left side of the bus. • Jet243689 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Tour guide was great! Basically enjoyed our experience! Our driver/tour guide was Mike and he was fantastic! The 4 rating was basically because it was advertised that wine/hot cocoa and bakery good would be served at the end of the tour at a historic Branson Hotel, Backstage and Wine Bar. This did not happen. Did not ruin our experience but just think it should not be advertised that way. Would definitely do this again! Did I say Mike was great!!! Read more Written November 20, 2023

Took this tour with my friend of 33 years - we currently live in different states and scored big with this Branson experience. We enjoyed two wineries, one distillery, and the best meal of our vacation at the Black Oak restaurant at The Landing. Can't say enough good things about Michael - easy to talk to, informative, and down right friendly. The bartender at the Missouri Ridge Distillery was amazing! Kept us laughing and enjoying the whiskey. Our first winery, Ozark Hills, was a delight - we were treated like VIP. Our second winery, unfortunately don't remember the name of - was a disappointment. Simply missed the mark when it comes to hospitality. Read more Written August 11, 2023

Rice and vegs cooked properly. Had carrot cake for dessert. Our server was very attentive. Never felt rushed - loved the door-to-door service! Read more Written July 19, 2023

The wine tastings were relaxed and generous and while the wine may not have been remarkable the settings exceeded our expectations. The Missouri Ridge Distillery was a highlight even though we are not bourbon/whiskey drinkers - taken right out of an episode of Moonshiners. We were definitely ready for dinner which was more than adequate. Michael, our tour guide, was great throughout. Read more Written June 19, 2023
  • steventQ3127TT 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great time wine and distillery hopping in Branson! My wife and I had a fantastic time! First, a shout out to Michael our driver, keeper of the schedule and the protector after some of us were getting tipsy. He was great! The stops were fun and kept getting better as we went. The second stop had us tasting our wine with another couple that became new friends on a gorgeous overlook listening to live music. It was fabulous. The last stop was at a distillery with very knowledgeable staff and I had 140 proof moonshine for the first time in my 61 years. I’m not going to replace my scotch and bourbon with moonshine but it was fun and a very interesting experience to drink. Highly recommended. And the bourbon was to die for so I bought plenty to take back home. The dinner was great as well. My wife enjoyed the experience as well but needed to be careful how much she drank as this becomes a bit much for those who don’t drink much. It was better for her to just taste test but not drink everything given. I will definitely consider doing this again! Read more Written May 28, 2023
  • jellyb 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Well Run Tour For Some Tastes and a Dinner While Taking In Views of the Area This is an excellent activity to do in Branson away from all the cheesy shows giving you a chance to enjoy some of the regional wines and a historic distillery while taking in the sites. Tour is very well organized. The Bear Creek Winery is in an amazing location with great views from the deck. Driver was very friendly although I'd recommend being pro-active about asking questions about the area as the tasting and dinner is the focus, this isn't a sightseeing tour per se outside the 4 stops. Dinner was downtown in the new area of Branson and food and service were good but not "gourmet" about what you'd expect as this isn't a foodie tour. You have a choice of chicken, steak, or salmon. Given the reasonable price for the whole experience though, if you are a steak connoisseur I'd skip the steak, not bad at all, but the Salmon and Chicken are in my opinion better options if you are finicky about your steak. • Brian L 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Very good experience. First off, Michael, our guide and driver, was excellent! We were greeted warmly as we entered the office, provided hot chocolate and conversation. Tour was very good consisting of the Trail of Lights, Table Rock Dam, Chateau on the Lake, Branson Landing, Joy of Lights, all very good. Joy of Lights was an excellent lighting display and Michael choreographed the music in the Van to the lighting display. All the while, Mike was entertaining us with his knowledge of Branson. Having read some of the other negative reviews, I have no idea what those people are talking about; but some people just need to complain. This was an excellent tour! P.S. Huge fan of the person who writes the replies to the reviews here! Tactfully direct and sarcastic at the same time. Well done! Read more Written December 27, 2022
