Hailing from Seattle, Washington, Carlile has spent the last two decades building a phenomenal discography with her golden lyrical pen front and center throughout.

Across her seven studio albums, one live album, one compilation album and 15 extended plays, Carlile has propelling 31 singles into the ether, many of which have landed on the US Rock chart.

Holler

Bob Harris picks his favourite Brandi Carlile songs to build this definitive Top 10 list.

With a slew of Grammy Awards to her name and a list of awards accolades that date back to 2010's Outstanding Music Artist nomination at the GLAAD Media Awards, Carlile and her tight-knit touring family have spent much of their career on the road both as headliners and as supporting acts for the likes of Ray LaMontagne, The Fray, Maroon 5 and OneRepublic.

For 2023, she's been traipsing the U.S. as direct support for high-flying pop royalty P!nk on her Summer Carnival Tour, while also playing several festival slots and making her own headlining appearances throughout.

Since releasing her most recent studio album, In These Silent Days , and its derivative version, In The Canyon Haze , Carlile's average setlist has been chock-full of its songs.

From the sweet, almost lullaby sound of 'Stay Gentle', which she often intertwines with the classic 'Over the Rainbow', Carlile also performs the rock-leaning wailer of 'Broken Horses', the breezy diddy of 'You and Me on the Rock', dramatic 'Mama Werewolf', piano-driven 'Right On Time' and fiery 'Sinners, Saints and Fools' from the Grammy-winning record.

However, the tunesmith doesn't only depend on these newer cuts in her live shows.

Rather, Carlile reminds us just how extensive and hit-ridden her catalogue is, playing standout tunes like 'The Story', 'The Joke', 'That Year', 'Raise Hell', 'The Things I Regret' and a chilling three-part harmony version of 'The Eye' alongside her longtime collaborators, Tim and Phil Hanseroth.

Elsewhere in Carlile's live show, fans will be able to see a handful of covers.

Though they often get changed out, she's recently been a fan of songs like the Indigo Girls' 'Closer to Fine', Brandy Clark's 'The Best Ones' and her two-part encore of the Wings' 'Live and Let Die' and Queen's 'We Are the Champions'.

Jacob Collier feat. Brandi Carlile

  • DETAILS DETAILS

A Grammy-winning vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Jacob Collier is known for his sophisticated yet hooky sound that blends crossover jazz, soulful '70s-style R&B, and pop with contemporary electronic production techniques. Collier became an internet sensation in the early 2010s with his layered performances, achieving a one-man harmony vocal group, often with accompanying video takes, a technique he expanded upon in 2014 working with the MIT Media Lab. His debut album, 2016's In My Room, topped the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums chart and took home two Grammy Awards. Collier has continued to develop his sound, releasing a series of ambitious albums, beginning with 2018's Djesse, Vol. 1, and featuring collaborations with artists like Laura Mvula, Becca Stevens, Lianne La Havas, Tori Kelly, and others. By the time the star-studded Djesse, Vol. 4 arrived in 2024, he'd collected six Grammys for his arranging skills.

Born in 1994 and raised in a North London family of musicians, Collier began sharing music videos of his slick, multi-track performances from his home-music room as a 17-year-old in late 2011. Presenting most of the videos in a grid layout so that each vocal and instrumental take was visible, he would often arrange and perform up to eight-part vocal harmonies, with accompaniment ranging from keyboards and stringed instruments to varied percussion. His early songs included original tunes such as "Serendipity" and covers of songwriters spanning George & Ira Gershwin, Burt Bacharach, and Stevie Wonder.

After high school, he enrolled as a jazz piano performance major at the Royal Academy of Music. While there, he caught the attention of legendary producer Quincy Jones, who signed Collier to his management company. Also while in school, Collier further developed his method of solo multimedia live performance, collaborating on the project with engineers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab. With Jones' backing, he debuted the performance technology at the 2015 Montreux Jazz Festival, where he opened for Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. Soon in demand for his arranging skills as well as performing, he began collaborating with other musicians, including an appearance on Snarky Puppy's early-2016 release Family Dinner, Vol. 2.

As a solo artist, Collier's first official single from an album of his own, "Hideaway," appeared in April 2016. His debut LP, In My Room, followed mid-year on the Membran label and charted in Switzerland and the Netherlands in addition to reaching number three on Billboard's Jazz Albums chart. In 2017, Collier won two Grammy Awards for his arranging: one for his version of Stevie Wonder's "You and I" (Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella) and one for his cover of The Flintstones theme song (Best Arrangement, Instrumental and Vocals).

By the time he returned to the studio to work on his second album in 2018, he'd been touring internationally for over two years. Described as the first of a four-volume project, Djesse, Vol. 1 arrived on Decca in December 2018. It featured the Metropole Orkest conducted by Jules Buckley, as well as collaborations with Laura Mvula, Moroccan singer Hamid El Kasri, the a cappella groups Take 6 and Voces8, and Suzie Collier, Jacob's mother. Djesse, Vol. 2 followed in 2019 and found Collier exploring more intimate acoustic settings alongside an equally impressive list of collaborators, including Lianne La Havas, Oumou Sangaré, Sam Amidon, Becca Stevens, and others. Both albums earned Collier Grammy Awards, including Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Capella for "All Night Long" off Djesse, Vol. 1, and Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals for "Moon River" off Djesse, Vol. 2. The following year saw the arrival of the EP collections Jacobean Essentials and Jacobean Chill as well as Djesse, Vol. 3, which featured collaborations with Tori Kelly, T-Pain, and Ty Dolla $ign, among others. That set was nominated for an Album of the Year Grammy, and its "He Won't Hold You" (featuring Rapsody) took home the award for Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals. While fans awaited the arrival of the final Djesse volume, Collier delivered an idiosyncratic, Grammy-nominated take on "The Christmas Song," he co-wrote and sang backup on SZA's Top Ten hit "Good Days," and he issued the live album Piano Ballads in September 2022. Recorded at stops around the world earlier the same year, it featured appearances by vocalist Alita Moses and multi-instrumentalist Stian Carstensen. In 2023, Collier was among the producers nominated for an Album of the Year Grammy for their work on Coldplay's Music of the Spheres (2021). The accolades continued in 2024, when Collier won the Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals Grammy for "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" by Säje featuring Collier (which he shared with Erin Bentlage, Sara Gazarek, Johnaye Kendrick, and Amanda Taylor). When Djesse, Vol. 4 arrived a few weeks later, in late February 2024, its star-studded guest list included Brandi Carlile, John Legend, John Mayer, and Coldplay's Chris Martin, just to name a few. ~ Marcy Donelson

A songwriter whose yearning, probing spirit is matched by her powerful, soaring voice, Brandi Carlile made a splash with her eponymous debut album in 2005, yet when she received six Grammy nominations for her 2018 album By the Way, I Forgive You, the mainstream acclaim was so sudden it almost seemed like it arrived overnight. Between those two records, Carlile had her share of success -- the haunted, churning "The Story" won her a gold certification for the album of the same name -- but she worked steadily and reliably, building up a cult audience and industry connections that all crested with By the Way, I Forgive You, which wound up taking home half of the Grammys it was nominated for. Her visibility elevated, Carlile capitalized on her stardom by joining with Amanda Shires, Maren Morris, and Natalie Hemby in the country supergroup the Highwomen, whose 2019 debut helped underscore Carlile's stardom and artistic depth. Carlile returned to her solo career in 2021 with In These Silent Days, which yielded the 2022 companion set In the Canyon Haze. The former of the two albums helped her earn three more Grammy Awards at the 2023 ceremony.

Brandi Carlile was born in the small town of Ravensdale, Washington, an isolated community 50 miles from Seattle. With few neighbors or friends nearby, she grew up learning to make her own entertainment, which included hiking trips in the nearby woods and self-taught vocal lessons. She also grew attached to the classic country music her parents doted on, specifically Patsy Cline, and she made her stage debut at the age of eight after she was taken to a local country radio show by her mother. At 17, Carlile picked up the guitar, having developed a taste for rock & roll through Elton John's classic albums of the 1970s, and began hitting the Seattle bar scene, playing anywhere she could get a gig (including a stint singing backup for an Elvis Presley tribute act).

While playing clubs, Carlile encountered a band called the Fighting Machinists, featuring twin brothers Tim and Phil Hanseroth. Impressed by their instrumental skills and spot-on harmonies, she became an instant fan of the group, and when they broke up, she persuaded the Hanseroth twins to form a new band with her. While they started out as an aggressive rock & roll act, Carlile's emotionally powerful songwriting and acoustic guitar work soon became the dominant component of their sound, and they began touring regularly, headlining small venues and opening shows for Dave Matthews, Shawn Colvin, and India.Arie.

In 2000, Carlile recorded the first of several self-released recordings that sold briskly at shows. By 2005, she'd gained enough buzz to secure a contract with Columbia Records, which released her self-titled debut later that same year. The album earned enthusiastic reviews, and Carlile was named one of 2005's "Artists to Watch" by Rolling Stone. In 2006, she and her band began work on her second Columbia long-player, The Story, with T-Bone Burnett producing. The record was released in spring 2007 to warm reviews, and the inclusion of its title track in several commercials (most notably a General Motors ad that aired during the 2008 Beijing Olympics) helped boost sales. Give Up the Ghost followed in late 2009 and cracked the Top 40, featuring production from another high-caliber studio hand, Rick Rubin, as well as a duet with childhood idol Elton John.

Carlile rang in 2010 by issuing a Valentine's Day-themed EP, XOBC. She also continued to tour, making a well-received stop at the annual Bonnaroo Festival that summer and collaborating with the Seattle Symphony for two shows in November. The symphonic concerts were recorded and released the following year as Live at Benaroya Hall. In 2012, Carlile returned with the album Bear Creek, featuring production from Grammy Award-winning mixer/producer/engineer Trina Shoemaker. Taking its title from the Washington recording studio in which the album was recorded, Bear Creek included the leadoff single "That Wasn't Me." Carlile returned to Bear Creek Studios to put together her follow-up, The Firewatcher's Daughter. Opting for a loose and live feel for the album, it was recorded almost without demoing any of the songs or overdubs. It appeared in the first week of March 2015 and earned Carlile her first Grammy nomination, for Best Americana Album.

In 2017, she commemorated the tenth anniversary of The Story by assembling a star-studded charity album for the nonprofit War Child, Cover Stories: Brandi Carlile Celebrates 10 Years of The Story. Inspired by an Adele cover of "Hiding My Heart," the album also featured Dolly Parton, Pearl Jam, Kris Kristofferson, Jim James, and the Avett Brothers, among others. Carlile returned with her sixth studio LP, the Dave Cobb and Shooter Jennings co-production By the Way, I Forgive You, in February 2018; the album became her highest-charting outing to date. In October 2018, she teamed up with English singer/songwriter Sam Smith for a lush orchestral version of album closer "Party of One," and two months later, she received six Grammy nominations, including three of the biggest categories: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. Carlile took home three trophies when By the Way, I Forgive You won Best Americana Album, while "The Joke" scored Best American Roots Song and Best American Roots Performance.

Early in 2019, Carlile was featured on country singer Maren Morris' second album, Girl, which reached the Top Five of the Billboard 200. Following an appearance at a Loretta Lynn tribute concert celebrating the singer's 87th birthday that April, Carlile, Morris, Amanda Shires, and Natalie Henby made their festival debut as the Highwomen at the Newport Folk Festival in July. The quartet's eponymous debut album arrived on Elektra in September 2019 and reached the U.S. Top Ten while topping the country chart. That October, Carlile performed Joni Mitchell's album Blue at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Carlile published her autobiography, Broken Horses: A Memoir, in April 2021. That September, she reunited with producer Dave Cobb and Shooter Jennings to record her seventh LP, In These Silent Days. It hit number 11 on the Billboard 200 and became her fourth consecutive release to top the U.S. folk chart. The album was reissued one year later with a companion record of acoustic versions titled In the Canyon Haze. At the 2023 Grammy Awards, she was again nominated for numerous awards and took home three more trophies including Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song for her single "Broken Horses." ~ Mark Deming
