Though cruising is relatively new to the Margaritaville travel and hospitality franchise, cruise line Margaritaville at Sea is essentially a rebranding of the old Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line. Its refurbished ship, Paradise, originally debuted in the 1990s for Costa Cruises.

One Jimmy Buffett-themed makeover later, the ship is a perfect fit for the laid-back vibe of the Bahamas. Grab a drink or a bite to eat from the 5 o'Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill, try your luck at the Par-A-Dice Casino and enjoy plenty of entertainment, including the musical production "Tales from Margaritaville: Jimmy's Ship Show." There's a kids club, a teen club, a spa and two pools stocked with beach balls and inflatable parrots.

The two-night cruise itinerary includes one day in Freeport, where you can shop, hit the casino, enjoy water sports or chill on the beach. The ship offers shore excursions, or you can explore independently. This itinerary may be the best overall short Bahamas cruise. Both the three- and four-night cruises have stops at Nassau and Royal Caribbean 's massive private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay . 3- or 4-night cruises on Celebrity Reflection from Fort Lauderdale

Celebrity Cruises currently sails three- and four-night voyages round-trip from Fort Lauderdale year-round.

The 3,046-passenger Celebrity Reflection offers a consistent rotation of three-night weekend cruises (departing each Friday and returning each Monday morning) and four-night weekday sailings (departing each Monday and returning each Friday morning).

The Solstice Class ships feature some of the most stylish outdoor pool decks at sea, with indoor, adults-only pool areas that, notably, are topped with glass panels embedded with solar panels that contribute to the ship's power grid. You'll also find large spas, casinos, showrooms and a nice selection of restaurants on board.

This ship also has one of the most spectacular suites in the cruising world — the 1,646-square-foot Reflection Suite. It was the first two-bedroom suite on a Celebrity Cruises vessel.

Although Celebrity doesn't draw many families with young children, the shorter Bahamas itineraries are also perfect for multigenerational family groups seeking an affordable cruise that appeals to all ages.

4-night cruises on Virgin Voyages' Valiant Lady from Miami

Virgin Voyages aimed to be a disrupter in the cruise market from the beginning — creating a product designed to please even those who claim they would never set foot on a cruise ship. Yet the itinerary for this four-night Bahamas cruise on Valiant Lady is fairly ordinary. Ports of call include Key West and a private beach club on the Bahamian island of Bimini.

3-night cruises on Norwegian Sky from Miami

Norwegian Cruise Line offers three-night sailings from Miami aboard Norwegian Sky. Ports of call include Key West and Great Stirrup Cay, the line's private island.

Port diversions consist of touring the Hemingway House and the Key West Lighthouse, shopping in Freeport's Lucaya district on Grand Bahama and exploring the white sand beaches and pristine waters on Great Stirrup Cay.

The 1,944-passenger vessel is part of the line's Sun Class of ships. Though the ship launched in 1999, it received a substantial refurbishment in 2022 that included a cabin remodel, new and expanded dining and a design overhaul.

5-night cruises on Carnival Elation from Jacksonville, Florida

I am a huge lover of five-night sailings. They are long enough to scratch the cruise itch and short enough to account for travel time to and from the port without adding any extra vacation days. Plus, the slightly longer itineraries are less popular with hard partiers who can be disruptive on shorter Bahamas cruises.

Carnival Cruise Line offers five-night sailings from Jacksonville aboard the 2,100-passenger Carnival Elation. Depending on which itinerary you choose, you can chill out on the beaches of Bimini, shop Nassau's iconic straw market or explore one of Carnival's private islands.

Built in the 1990s, this Fantasy Class vessel is among the line's oldest and smallest ships. However, it received an extensive glow-up completed in 2023 that included upgrading the ship's spa. If traveling to the closer of the two, Bimini, the ferry website says you should arrive by 11 am, though, we have found that time to be closer to noon. The journey to Freeport is also supposed to arrive before noon but rarely does that happen.

No matter what, you are looking at a 2.5-3 hour trip on any boat from Miami to Bahamas.

If traveling on a budget, it is smart to take the boat from Miami to Bahamas which stops in Bimini, drops passengers off, and continues to Freeport. Though, beware this makes the trip longer as well.

On any Bahamas day trip from Miami, expect to arrive back to Florida after sunset around 8 or 8:30 pm.

Where do the day trips to Bahamas from Miami by ferry leave from?

According to Baleària Caribbean’s website, the company suggests you arrive at the ferry port in Fort Lauderdale at 5:30 am — three and a half hours before scheduled departure.

It seems from the ferry service’s online schedule, from the time you arrive at the Fort Lauderdale ferry port until the time you return to the port at night, you will have spent 11-12 hours of your day either at the ferry ports or traveling to/ from on your boat from Miami to Bahamas. That doesn’t leave a lot of time to go on your destination excursions and adventures after your ferry from Fort Lauderdale to Bahamas.

In small print at the bottom of the website, you are notified that the schedule can be changed at any time without notice. We wouldn’t want to spend any more Miami to Bahamas boat time on schedule changes.

The website says each vessel has on-board WiFi, though, their collection of bad reviews on TripAdvisor would warn otherwise (more on that below) on ferries offered as day trips to Bahamas from Miami.

Welcome to one of the most beautiful places on earth: staniel cay and the exuma cays.

This is the world’s first Miami to Bahamas Day Trip, by plane, from Southern Florida to Bahamas. There is no other way to visit the Bahamas Out Islands on a day trip from Florida. Currently, visiting Staniel Cay and the swimming pigs is one of the most sought after excursions in the world.

Flights to Bahamas from Southern Florida

You will fly on the Staniel Cay Tour from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE) in a private charter aircraft. You will need to arrive at the airport for check-in at 6:30am. FXE Airport within the Miami Metropolitan area, is to the North of Miami and is approximately a 1 hour drive from South Beach or Downtown Miami. The flights depart promptly at 7:30am. The flight from Florida to the Bahamas is approximately 1 hour. We have a short stop at the International Airport on Andros Island in the Bahamas for all customers to clear immigration and customs before we set-off on a 45 minute flight to our destination Staniel Cay in the Exumas.

Staniel Cay Tour by Boat

On arrival at Staniel Cay Airport, you will be transferred to the dock. You expert local tour guide will take you on a guided tour of Staniel Cay and the Exuma Cays. This is a private boat excursion just for our customers with a maximum group size of 9. Our boat tour lasts approximately 4 hours. Because of the time  spent outdoors in the sun and on the water we advise all customers to wear appropriate clothing and bring sun protection.

The Famous Bahamas Swimming Pigs at Pig Beach

Pigs can Swim? Welcome to Pig Beach on Big Major Cay, home to the famous swimming pigs of the Bahamas. You’ll have the opportunity to go swimming with the pigs! We provide food for feeding these Exuma Pigs, but follow directions from you Guide. Pigs can bite!

There are a number of interesting stories of how these pigs got here at Pig Beach . Some say they were shipwrecked and swam ashore or that sailors brought them here then left and never returned for them. But the real reason is that the villagers of Staniel Cay put them there to avoid smelling out the village. Unlike some operators, we ensure that the welfare of the pigs are looked after by our local partners. For example ensuring they have a supply of fresh water.

Snorkelling into the James Bond Thunderball Grotto

Welcome to the exotic world of James Bond. You can snorkel into the Thunderball Grotto , a cave, made famous as a filming location in the James Bond film Thunderball. We provide all snorkel equipment including vests. Its a short swim (approximately 50m) to reach inside the Thunderball Grotto. You will need to be proficient at swimming and snorkelling to take part in this activity. Very restrictive tide levels and weather conditions can affect this activity so you may be given another snorkelling activity as a substitute.

Exotic Wildlife: Bahamas Rock Iguanas

We visit Bitter Guana Cay, home to the endangered species of Bahamas Rock Iguanas. When you first step foot on the beach during your Bahamas Day Trip, you will feel as if you’ve travelled back in time to the prehistoric era. Dozens of large Bahamian Rock Iguanas emerge from the vegetation at the top of the beach. The early inhabitants of the Bahamas saw the Iguanas as a source of food, and almost hunted them to extinction. Fortunately, they are now protected by the Wild Animals (Protection) Act, allowing them to thrive in this marvellous habitat.

Swim with Sharks at Compass Cay

We take you to Compass Cay, the most northerly point on our boat excursion. At Compass Cay you have the opportunity to swim with Sharks. The type of shark here is the nurse shark, which are for the most part harmless to humans.

Sunken Plane Wreck

The plane was used in drug trafficking and ditched here in the 1970’s. Local legend has it the plane ditched here during a practice run when the traffickers were practising with bags of flour. The Sunken Plane Wreck is a time permitting activity and upon request from the Guests. It is not a guaranteed stop for either Sightseeing or Snorkelling.

Exuma Cays Sand Bars

These stunning sand bars with very shallow waters are a unique feature of the Exuma Cays. Enjoy time exploring this paradise of white sand bars and turquoise blue water around the Pike Cay Sand Bars located close to Compass Cay. (see Staniel Cay Tour Map below)

Staniel Cay Tour

You will visit the beaches around Staniel Cay and visit the Staniel Cay Yacht Club or Local Fish-fry Restaurant for lunch (to see the Lunch menu at the Yacht Club click here ), set alongside the Staniel Cay Marina which is home to luxury super yachts. The Yacht club has a lively bar and full service restaurant. Be sure to visit the Staniel Cay Yacht Club gift shop!

Flights from the Bahamas back to Florida

At the end of the Boat Excursion, in the late afternoon, you will be transferred back to Staniel Cay Airport. From here we will fly back to United States and land back at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport FXE (or another International Airport on the east coast of Florida if you are on a private charter), where you will go through the US Customs and Immigration process required for entry back into the United States.

Do I need a Passport to fly to Bahamas from Florida? Yes! Passports are a requirement for all guests. US ID Cards or Birth Certificates are not an adequate substitute for a passport because these are international flights requiring entry to both the Bahamas and re-entry into the United States. Passports are required for all persons, including children.

What to Bring You are allowed to bring a small day bag per person, weighing upto 10lbs .  What to pack:

Carry-on Baggage Policy Baggage is limited to 10lbs per person , including your personal items such as handbag, laptop bags, etc. Excess baggage will be charged a fee of $1.75 per lb pound. For safety reasons, excess baggage can only be accepted on a space-available basis, as determined by the Flight Operator. Please note that all baggage will be considered checked baggage, unless the bag weighs 5lbs or under. Infants do not get a bag allowance.

Important Notes We can’t guarantee all stops along the tour due to weather, sea conditions and progress of the group along the tour itinerary. Each participant must complete a signed waiver before commencing the tour. The tour operator provide these to complete on-island prior to departing on your boat tour. Expectant mothers will require a Doctor’s clearance to fly letter. Confirmation of your booking and place on the tour is only made after both payment and issue of the confirmation email with flight tickets . Submitting the booking request form on this website does not confirm your booking. We encourage customers to book as far in advance as possible to avoid disappointment, especially for Spring Break or Summer Months, as we have exceptional demand for Tours in 2023/24 season. Bad Weather Policy Tours operate Rain or Shine. We may have to cancel tours ahead of time during adverse weather events. Weather cancellation is rare. Weather in the Bahamas is generally scattered clouds with isolated but fast moving thunderstorms. It is likely you may encounter a rain shower during your tour. If you decide to cancel your reservation or curtail your tour, because you decide not to travel due to weather, you would be subject to our restrictive cancellation policy and may not receive any refund. If We/Operator cancel your tour in its entirety, prior to departure, due to weather you will be entitled to a reschedule (subject to availability), a credit or a refund. The tour Operator may have to curtail or terminate the tour early due to weather or sea conditions, therefore we can’t guarantee all stops along the tour itinerary. This was a really great day out and found it very convenient to visit the Bahamas when we only had a few days to stay in Miami. We really enjoyed the Sharks at Compass Cay because we had no expectation that it would this amazing. The sand bar was amazing soft sand just like the Whitsundays. We’ve been before to the Bahamas and knew that if we were going to come back it would have to be by plane after bad experiences with long boat rides and lots of queuing. The Bahamas Day Trip absolutely met all our expectations. Our least favourite part was having to leave! The boat and plane are looked after in great, clean condition. Even the snorkelling equipment is brand new, which is what you expect on a premium tour like this. They flew us into the Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale and then took us out on the boat to see the piggies. We also visited thunderball grotto (very cool but the currents are strong!!), iguana island, the sandbar (stunning!!), swam with nurse sharks and then finally stopped off to see the underwater plane wreck (it’s very small but still cool). We also had lunch at the yacht club which was delicious (get the fresh catch of the day, grilled) and it was well air conditioned too which was nice.

Overall it was an amazing day. Our tour guide was strict with rules and explained the pigs are wild animals and how to treat them respectfully and how to avoid being bitten (stay facing them and give an open hand to show you have no food!). I really appreciated the guides being respectful of the animals and not allowing them to be treated like toys.

The scenery was INCREDIBLE, the water is totally clear and just amazing. Truly a dream come true!

We had a fantastic day out in the Exumas. It was great to visit the Swimming Pigs but we most enjoyed swimming with sharks at the compass cay! My boyfriend and I had the very best day trip to bahamas. The blue color of the exumas is absolutely stunning. You have to do this tour by plane – we had the best views over the tropical islands. landing into the small island staniel cay we got on the boat tour where the boat captain was very funny and offered fab service all day. Our favorite stop was the swimming with sharks. Our boat guide got into the water with us to show us how to pet the sharks! And no point did we feel rushed, the pace of the day was perfect. lunch was good although the service was abit slow as we went on a very busy day. the food was fine, lots to choose from. Such a fun day out, it was well organized by bahamas air tours. Its expensive, but you fly in a private plane and the boat tour had a small group size, they gave us plenty of drinks too, its worth every dollar!! The communication before the trip and help with booking was absolutely 5star, all there team went above and beyond for us. thank you so much, cant wait to return. Exumas is Paradise!!

Balearia Caribbean Changes, Cancellations & Refunds

Balearia Caribbean's ferry ticket are not transferable. The name of the passenger cannot be modified in any case.

Those reservations whose cancellation is requested seven days before the ferry departure date, are entitled to a full refund.

If the reservation cancellation request is made between 7 and 4 days before the ferry departure date, the cancellation penalty will be 50%.

Those reservation cancellations requested three days or less before the ferry departure date will not be refunded.

Date changes : Date changes are allowed if they are requested at least 24 hours before the ferry departure date. A fare difference and a US$75 penalty will be applied for each change.

Special Offers and One day Trips: No refund will be applied for cancellations of special offers and one-day trips.

Any passenger who does not board the ferry for any reason, beyond the control of Balearia Caribbean, will not be entitled to a refund or date change under any circumstances.

Balearia Caribbean does not assume any responsibility other than the refund of the ticket, in case it has to refund it, if the ferry trip for which the ticket has been issued does not make the stipulated trip due to operational difficulties, weather conditions, unforeseen circumstances or forces beyond Balearia Caribbean's control.

Baleària Caribbean is not responsible for any denied boarding due to failure to present the appropriate travel documentation. New requirements effective on June 19th, 2022 .

June 17th, 2022: ALL passengers will NO LONGER need a Bahamas Health Visa starting on June 19th, 2022

Every passenger that is fully vaccinated WILL NO LONGER NEED A TEST .

All unvaccinated travelers ages 2 and older will be required to obtain either a negative RT-PCR test or a Rapid Antigen test— taken no more than three days (72 hours) prior to travel and present the negative test results at check-in before travel to The Bahamas.

Passengers will be required to bring Covid test result, proof of vaccinations (original card) on travel day. This is a mandatory request by The Bahamas government. The embarkation may be denied due to failure of facilitating the proper travel documents.

Children under the age of 2 are exempt from testing requirements.

* Currently, no Covid test or vaccination is required to enter Florida when traveling by ferry.

May 31, 2022: LATEST UPDATE from the Bahamian authorities regarding passengers traveling to the Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale (both Bimini and Grand Bahama) on the day trip. Although those passengers who come to the Bahamas for one day trip do not need to present the Health Visa upon arrival at the port of the Bahamas, it is mandatory that they present a negative result of a rapid antigen test upon arrival.

All other passengers who spend at least one night in the Bahamas must present the Health Visa upon arrival in the country.

As of now, May 2022, the health visa that was requested by the Bahamian authorities from Balearia Caribbean passengers on a one day trip to the Bahamas (both Bimini and Grand Bahama) will no longer be mandatory however they are requiring a Negative RAPID Test.

With this new initiative of the permanent secretary of the Bahamas government, it is intended to increase the number of visitors and travelers of the one day trip, in both directions, both for those who want to travel to the Bahamas (Bimini and Grand Bahama), and for those Bahamians who want to travel to the United States.

As of this communication received from Balearia Caribbean on May 23th, the shipping company will apply this new regulation from now on to all passengers traveling on routes between Fort Lauderdale - Bimini and Fort Lauderdale - Grand Bahama , in both directions.

NOTICE that Balearia Caribbean continues to apply all Health Visa requirements to those passengers who spend at least one night in the Bahamas or Florida.

Infants (from 0 to 6 months) may travel on board Balearia Caribbean ferry to Bahamas.

PLEASE NOTE: In the event of heavy seas, strong winds or inclement weather, Balearia Caribbean may deny boarding of the baby at the discretion of the Company for reasons of safety of the baby.

MINORS (under 18 years of age) traveling with an accompanying adult, who is not the parent or legal guardian of the minor, a notarized parent/guardian letter of consent is required at the time of travel (signed by both parents) with a copy of a photo ID.

MINORS traveling with ONLY ONE of their parents ALSO require a notarized consent letter from the other parent not traveling, if this parent does not have the Consent Letter available, they must sign a Release Form, which is available at check in.

If there is no second parent with legal claims to the child (deceased, sole custody, etc.) any other relevant paperwork, such as a court decision, birth certificate naming only one parent, death certificate, etc., would be useful.

NOTES: While the Authorities may not ask to see this documentation, if they do ask, and the traveler does not have it, may be detained until the circumstances of the child traveling without both parents can be fully assessed.

Adults traveling with children should also be aware that, while the U.S. does not ask sometimes for this documentation, other countries (as Bahamas) may have a requirement and failure to produce notarized permission letters and/or birth certificates could result in travelers being refused entry.

Any passenger who is 31 weeks or more pregnant on the date of their ferry journey will not be allowed to sail. Before the departure of the ship, pregnant women from 24 to 30 weeks must present, before boarding, a letter from their doctor certifying the gestation period in which they are and that the future mother is fit to navigate on ferry.

The government of the Bahamas has modified the requirements for entry into the Bahamas islands and travel between certain islands in the Bahamas in order to provide a safe and healthy island experience for all travelers visiting the Bahamas to safely enjoy the islands.

This new regulation is aimed at all people who apply for a Health Visa to travel to the Bahamas or travel between islands within the Bahamas as of next Friday, August 6, 2021.

From this date to:

Entering the Bahamas from other countries:

All fully vaccinated travelers, as well as children ages 2 to 11, will need to obtain a negative COVID-19 test (either a rapid antigen test or a PCR test) taken no more than five (5) days prior to departure/arrival date to the Bahamas.

Unvaccinated travelers 12 years of age and older must obtain a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than 5 days prior to arrival.

All children under the age of 2 are exempt from any testing requirements.

If you want to travel between islands within the Bahamas from the following islands:

Nassau and Paradise Island, Grand Bahama (Freeport), Bimini (Alice Town), Exuma, Abaco, and North and South Eleuthera, including Harbor Island.

Requeriments for Cruise Passengers.

Guests on cruises originating in and returning to the Bahamas must apply for a Bahamas Travel Health Visa and follow the new testing requirements for vaccinated and unvaccinated persons.

Vaccinated people must provide a negative PCR test or rapid antigen test performed no more than five (5) days prior to arrival in the Bahamas islands.

Unvaccinated people must obtain a negative PCR test performed no more than five (5) days prior to the date of arrival in the Bahamas islands.

All travelers entering the Bahamas on cruises originating in the United States will be subject to the testing requirements required by the cruise line and approved by the Bahamian government.

Cruise lines may have different requirements for vaccinated and unvaccinated passengers. Travelers should check with their cruise line for specific details related to their cruise.

The new testing protocols are for all travelers applying for a Bahamas Travel Health Visa from Friday, August 6th onwards. These protocols will not apply to anyone with imminent travel who has already applied for and obtained a Bahamas Travel Health Visa.

Balearia Caribbean will relaunch its ferry service from Florida to the Bahamas on Febraury 2021, departing from Fort Lauderdale port. The South Florida-based company runs ferry services from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini first and from Port Everglades to Freeport (Grand Bahama island).

The company announced last week that the Government of the Bahamas has approved the launch of the fast ferry service between Miami (Fort Lauderdale) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) in the Bahamas. His first departure to Freeport is scheduled for February 11, 2021.

Balearia will be offering initially one sailing service a week, with ferry on Thurdays. At the end of Febraury, another ferry service will be implemented on Sundays. If there is an increase in demand for passenger transport, the shipping company is prepared to increase the number of weekly departures in March and April.

At the same time, Balearia will reopen the ferry route between Florida to Bimini island starting on February 10th, 2021. This route will have, at the moment, a frequency of 3 departures a week, in both directions. The Jaume II ferry will be the ship that does both routes.

The government of the Bahamas has announced that it will open its borders to the transport of passengers by ferrys of February 10, 2021 to Bimini island and on February 11, 2021 to Freeport Harbour (Gran Bahama island).

For that, Balearia Caribbean is preparing the safety and hygiene protocols (in its ships and passenger terminals) necessary to offer its customers safe transport, both for people and goods.

The ferry route to Freeport, Grand Bahama, will be opertate once a week (Thurdays) and, if possible, it will be two days a week in February. If passenger demand increases, and sanitary conditions allow it, the frequency on the ferry routes will be increased in March and April 2021.

When booking your trip to The Bahamas Islands, be sure to read, understand and follow these requirements, which are mandatory and required by the government of The Bahamas

As a GENERAL RULE, all travelers who want to visit the Bahamas should apply for a Bahamas Health Travel Visa. This visa can be obtained through the website travel.gov.bs . Also children and babies (regardless of their age) will need their own health visa (although they are not required to take the Covid test due to their age).

VACCINATED PASSENGERS

People who are fully vaccinated (2 doses or 1 dose depending on the vaccine) and who have waited as least the 14 days immunity period will be able to travel to The Bahamas without a negative COVID-19 test result.

In case of traveling to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island on a Sunday, you must bring 2 printed copies of the Travel Health Visa and Covid vaccination card plus the original.

UNVACCINATED PASSENGERS

All unvaccinated passengers over 10 years of age must submit a negative RT-PCR COVID-19 test performed no more than 5 days prior to their travel date. (This requirement is not mandatory for children under 10 years old).

At the time of boarding in Fort Lauderdale (Florida) and entering the country, passengers must present printed copies of the negative result of COVID 19 and of the Travel Health approved on the day of the trip. The health authorities of the Bahamas Islands are requesting these two printed reports, both the Travel Health Visa and the result of the COVID-19 RT-PCR test with a negative result. If the passenger does not provide these documents, the health authorities can deny the boarding or entry into the country.

Before boarding, a member of the Balearia Caribbean staff takes the body temperature of all passengers who are going to make the trip. If the reading of this temperature is higher than 100º Fahrenheit or 37.7º Celsius, the passenger will be denied boarding on the ferry.

While in the ferry terminals and on board the boats throughout the navigation, the use of a mask or face cover is always mandatory for all passengers.

With the safety and hygiene of passengers in mind, Balearia Caribbean has installed additional disinfectant dispensers in all its terminals and on board the ship.

1.- Everyone travelling to The Bahamas must obtain a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR (swab) test taken no more than 5 days prior to the date of arrival. The day the test is taken is considered day zero. Test must return a negative result for entry into The Bahamas.

2.- Travellers must apply for their required Bahamas Travel Health Visa at travel.gov.bs. (Clicking on International Tab).
