Blue Ridge Parkway Bike Tour

This is a bucket list ride along Skyline Drive, which connects to the Blue Ridge Parkway :  624 miles of gorgeous vistas and dramatic elevations. The parkway snakes through the Blue Ridge Mountains and traverses the states of Virginia and North Carolina, and offers us a chance to challenge and amaze.  Our lodging stays as close to the parkway as possible, but we will sometimes have to swoop out of the mountains to find a comfortable bed and a hearty meal.  The Timberline van will always be available to help you regain your elevation in the morning to continue the Parkway quest.

Our Bike Tour Schedule

We spend 9 days on our Blue Ridge Parkway bike tour, and have scheduled the ride later in the year to enjoy the cool mornings and warm afternoons. We end our riding at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and shuttle back to Asheville for a celebratory dinner.  Transportation to the Asheville airport is included on the next day.  This challenging ride includes distances of up to 80 miles and accumulated elevations each day of between 4,700 and 10,600 ft, if you include riding from the hotel each day.  Shuttle boosts are happily provided in the Timberline van.

Contact us for more information! Timberline Adventures offers guided hike and bike tours across the U.S. and Canada, and our experts across the country are ready to guide you in your outdoor experience.

Spring Edition 2023

Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) are two of the iconic National Parks in the US. They cover a distance of 574 miles, and all the climbing you will ever want (59K+ ft) while being in the USA. Please know there is very little of flat on these parkways. The road surfaces are good, there are no commercial vehicles allowed and there are no billboards or even stoplights. The numerous overlooks show many different viewpoints and incredible scenery: mountains, ridges and trees as far as the eye can see.

This tour is joining the Epic Appalachians tour on the Spring Adventure. We will meet up with this group in historic Gettysburg, PA. Our two days of riding will be in the scenic hills of West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia. The Skyline Drive is 105 miles and we split this into two days, with an overnight at The Lodge at Big Meadows. The second day on Skyline Drive will take us to the southern terminus outside of Afton, Virginia.

The Blue Ridge Parkway picks up where Skyline Drive ends. The BRP is 469 miles from Virginia through most of North Carolina to Cherokee, NC. This roadway construction was started in the late 1930’s and was 99.8% completed in 1966. The final 7.7 miles was finally completed in 1987. The BRP was designed to connect the Shenandoah National Park and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It runs mostly along the spine of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which is part of the Appalachian Mountains. It was built by contractors working with federal contracts, and help from members of the Civilian Conservation Corp.

As we begin the adventure on the BRP, we will continue to see some amazing scenery from a myriad of vistas and overlooks. Staying in National Park lodges, visiting Lexington, Virginia (the horse capitol of Virginia, and the home of Washington and Lee University and Virginia Military Institute. We will have the opportunity to climb Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak in the Appalachian Mountains at 6683 ft. We will end this tour by riding up to Pisgah Lodge and returning to Asheville to catch our flights home.

This Spring tour originates in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and ends in Asheville, North Carolina.

  • Pick up time is 2:00pm on the first day at Dulles International Airport, near DC.
  • Drop off time is: Asheville Airport on the day after our ride completes anytime before 2:00pm.
  • For advice on staying after the trip, please call the office. Our owner lives near Asheville.

Travel Note

The Lowdown

The Blue Ridge Parkway is America’s longest linear park, spanning 469 miles through Virginia and North Carolina. It connects Shenandoah National Park near Waynesboro, VA (Milepost 0) to Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Cherokee, NC (Milepost 469). Littered with gorgeous overlooks, breathtaking views, and winding scenic roads, the parkway is a highly sought-after destination for East Coast cyclists. Our Journey will take us from Asheville, NC to Charlottesville, VA to see all the highlights of the Blue Ridge Parkway!

What You’ll Love

The magic of the Blue Ridge Parkway is hard to put into words. Every morning there is a more beautiful sunrise and every evening there is a more stunning sunset. Evenings are best spent recounting the day around the campfire with your fellow riders. If the clouds behave at night, you might even get to see the Milky Way. Embrace the ride, embrace the experience, embrace your companions and leave the parkway with memories that you’ll never forget. Join us for a guided Blue Ridge Parkway bicycle tour!

blue ridge bike tours

The Night Before

Riders will settle in at the Springhill Suites by Marriott just a mile off of the parkway. Enjoy a day in Asheville and hit some of the highlights before setting off into the Mountains. Meet us at Highland Brewing Company for a get-to-know-us drink! These will be the people you’ll spend the next 6 days touring the Blue Ridge Parkway with, so the bonding starts now. We will have a beer (or whatever you prefer) and get excited about the epic trip awaiting us. Don’t stay up too late, because we will have an early start in the morning!

blue ridge bike tours

Day 1 – 45 miles; 6,133 feet of climbing OR 60 miles; 8,028 feet of climbing: Day 1 starts with a bang! The group will assemble outside of our hotel to pack up and head out. The first half of the day is uphill toward the highest peak east of the Mississippi. No Blue Ridge bike trip would be complete without Mount Mitchell which sits at an elevation of 6,684 feet. The air is a bit thin and the climb is steep, but the view is more than worth it. Our route takes us directly to the mountain. Riders will have the option to tackle the 4.8-mile climb up to the summit or shuttle up where we will have lunch with the best view in North Carolina. The rest of the day is mostly downhill to our hotel in Little Switzerland. Riders have the option to shuttle or ride to the mountain hamlet.

blue ridge bike tours

Day 2 – 36 miles; 3,631 feet of climbing OR 50 miles; 4,869 feet of climbing: The second day of our trip will be a bit shorter with less climbing to let our legs recover from our assault on Mount Mitchell. We will shuttle across the Linville River, home of the beautiful Linville Falls . The falls are 45 feet tall! A short hike will lead us to a gorgeous view before we start our day’s ride. Highlights of the day include a magnificent view of Grandfather Mountain ecological preserve and a ride over the Linn Cove Viaduct! We end in Glendale where we will tour the Church of the Frescos before shuttling to our hotel; the Hampton Inn Galax.

blue ridge bike tours

Day 3 – 34 miles – 2,993 feet of climbing: With one of the gentler elevation profiles, Day 3 should be a more laid-back day. Our series of ups and downs takes us to Floyd, VA . This unique town of about 700 people will give us a taste of civilization. Before that we’ll enjoy lunch at the historic Mabry Mill *. The mill was operated in the early 1900’s and has since been converted to a historic demonstration site. The restaurant serves pancakes until noon, so pedal fast! After lunch we stop at the Villa Appalachia winery and enjoy the incredible view from their Villa. A shuttle ride from the vineyard to Floyd leaves plenty of time to peruse the cute shops before dinner and our stay at the Hotel Floyd . *This lunch is not included

blue ridge bike tours

Day 4 – 34 miles; 3,011 feet of climbing OR 48 miles 3,857 feet of climbing The fourth day of the tour takes us all the way to Roanoke, VA ! It’s a faster day, so riders will have the opportunity for a great afternoon excursion. Options include Tuco’s Tacos, Big Lick Brewing Company, the pinball museum, the Green Goat Restaurant, and much much more! After enjoying all Roanoake has to offer we’ll rest our heads at the Springhill Suites Roanoake!

blue ridge bike tours

Day 5 – 35 miles – 4,001 feet of climbing: Say goodbye to Roanoke! But don’t worry, this is one of the most beautiful days of the trip. All of the climbing will be well worth it when we roll up to Peaks of Otter Lodge . The three peaks have been a vacation destination since the time of Thomas Jefferson…Although, we doubt he arrived by bicycle. Relax by the lake, grab dinner and a cocktail at the bar/restaurant, or take a hike in the hills. The breakfast* and coffee in the morning is to die for. For those feeling fresh there are fantastic hikes up to Sharp Top or Flat Top Peaks. *Breakfast this day is not included

blue ridge bike tours

Day 6 – 36 miles; 3,795 feet of climbing OR 47 miles; 5,014 feet of climbing: The final day of the tour won’t leave you disappointed. From Peaks of Otter, we climb to the highest point in Virginia on the Blue Ridge Parkway: the top of Apple Orchard Mountain . Enjoy the views at 3,900 feet, because we immediately descend to the lowest point of the parkway when we cross the James River, at only 650 feet above sea level. Rest your legs on that long descent because the next section takes us back up to ridge height for our lunch at House Mountain Overlook. Soak in the views as we say goodbye to the parkway. We will shuttle to King Family Vineyards for some goodbye drinks and food before making our way into Charlottesville.

Black Bear Adventures - Bicycle Tours for Avid Cyclists

Blue Ridge Parkway

Black Bear Adventures is the only Tour company confident enough in themselves and their guests to offer full traverses of the Blue Ridge Parkway. I am in love with this road and have been since I was a young man, as a native North Carolinian I have spent countless hours on what is quite possibly the finest cycling experience in the world!

For 469 miles the Blue Ridge Parkway weaves, rises and falls through the magnificent mountain ranges that make up the Blue Ridge. The Parkway stretches from the Shenandoah National Park to the Great Smoky Mountains. On this tour we will climb over 45,000 feet as we cycle the entire length of the Parkway and discover the beauty it beholds.

A quote from Elizabeth & Charlie Skinner’s book Bicycling the Blue Ridge best sums up the experience of cycling the Blue Ridge Parkway – “There is no ribbon of road in the country more ideal for bicycling than the Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway.”

Day 1 Asheville to Staunton, VA

We leave Asheville at 10am to shuttle to the Stonewall Jackson Hotel in historic downtown Staunton, VA. The Stonewall Jackson is a wonderful hotel and ideally situated as a place to stage ourselves for tomorrows tour launch.

Hotel 24

Day 2 The Adventure Begins

We cycle from Rockfish Gap to the Peaks of Otter Lodge. Today’s stage has wonderful long range views of the Shenandoah Valley. After a moderate climb to start the day we roll along this narrow ribbon of road before descending to the lowest point on the BRP, the James River. After the descent comes what I consider to be one of the toughest climb of the entire tour, Apple Orchard Mtn. It climbs 3000+ feet in 12 miles and is the longest continuous climb on the BRP. Tonight we stay at the Peaks of Otter Lodge, which sits on the shores of Abbot Lake and offers wonderful views of Sharp Top Mountain.

Peaks Of Otter Lodge

Day 3 Peaks of Otter to Floyd, VA

After a thrilling descent into the Roanoke River Valley we climb out of the city before cresting and rolling through the Virginia countryside. Another long day in the saddle awaits us today but we cycle with the knowledge that ahead is the welcome oasis of one of my favorite communities on our journey, Floyd, VA. If we arrive in time we can stroll the streets and listen to some live bluegrass at the Country Store. Tonight’s inn and meal is sure to be one of the highlights of the trip.

Hotel Floyd

Day 4 Floyd, VA to Sparta, NC

Day 5 sparta to blowing rock, nc.

Today’s 62 mile route begins with a beautiful climb through Doughton Park before before rolling towards a series of short climbs on our way to the beautiful resort community of Blowing Rock. Tomorrow you are rewarded with a well deserved day off. This evening we will relax at the luxurious Chetola Resort, which is within walking distance of the many shops and restaurants that make up this popular tourist destination.

Chetola Lodge

Day 6 A Day of Recovery in Beautiful Blowing Rock

Enjoy a relaxing day at the splendid Chetola Resort and Spa, stroll around quaint downtown Blowing Rock or join your guides for a ride along local cycling routes. A day without schedules, you decide how to spend it!

Optional day of cycling!

Meals are on your own today, you are free to decide when, where and what you eat!

Day 7 Blowing Rock to Little Switzerland

We leave Blowing Rock and the Chetola Resort in route for Little Switzerland. Along the way we pass over and around some of the most distinctive landmarks of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Shortly out of town we begin climbing towards Grandfather Mountain and over the renowned Linn Cove Viaduct. We descend over the Viaduct and down to the Linville River where there is an optional hike to view Linville Falls. After remounting our bikes we climb up to Switzerland Inn, our ridge line host for the evening, along the way we will go through the first of NC’s 26 tunnels.

Little Switzerland Inn

Day 8 Little Switzerland to Asheville

Today we cycle into the highest mountain ranges along the Appalachian chain, the Black and Craggy Mountains. We spend most of the morning climbing to Mt. Mitchell State Park where we will tackle the eastern U.S.’s highest mountain. After our descent off the mountain we have one more major obstacle, the climb to Craggy Gardens, before a mostly downhill run into Asheville.

Renaissance Asheville

Day 9 Asheville to the Southern Terminus of the BRP

The final and quite possibly the most challenging day along this special ribbon of road. This remote stretch along the BRP is probably my favorite section and is stunning in its display of signature long range views. This is a day to appreciate all that cycling the Blue Ridge Parkway entails; the physical and mental challenge to complete such an endeavor, the magnificent beauty of this wonderful National Park, and the joy and camaraderie of sharing this marvelous journey! The tour ends with a glorious stretch that includes 13.5 miles of descending over the final 17 miles. After the completion of this unbelievable adventure we shuttle back to Asheville to celebrate our accomplishment!

Day 10 Our Final Farewells

After our night of celebration we gather to say our farewells and reflect on the experiences of the past week over our final group meal.
