Although the tour packages listed above are still usable since you have an option for solo travel using your own car ,  or an exclusive group tour . Please travel responsibly and always practice minimum health standards.
  • Rizal is currently under GCQ with heightened restrictions. This means if you’re living in Rizal, only 18-65 years old are allowed to go out of residence, and only APORs are allowed to enter/leave the province.
  • The places listed above are not to be frequented as in normal situations. These are not mainly for indulgence but rather for mental well-being. While it is important to help our tourism industry, we still need to limit our travel as a way of helping our medical workforce.

23. Palo Alto Falls

Located within the 200-hectare Palo Alto Leisure and Residential Estates , the 60-foot Palo Alto Falls is another cascade destination to add to your list of attractions near Manila.

Managed by the Sta. Lucia Land, the falls area is open to the public. At the entrance, you will have to take more than 200 steps to reach the falls. The cascade’s water basin, bordered with cemented boulders and stones, serves as a swimming area, with another pool right below it.

Location: Palo Alto Leisure and Residential Estates, Barangay Pinugay, Baras, Rizal Opening Hours: 9:00AM-5:00PM (Monday-Sunday). The opening hours might change without prior notice, so please check again before visiting. Entrance Fee: P100/head Other Fees: P400 (Table and Chairs); P700 Cottage

Tanay rizal day tour itinerary : 5 destinations.

TANAY RIZAL DAY TOUR

TANAY RIZAL DAY TOUR DESTINATIONS:

Tanay Rizal is one of the best day trip destinations from the metro. It’s only 2 hours away and so it’s very accessible. The best part is, it only cost us less than Php 1,000. Here are the places included in our trip.

1. Treasure Mountain 2. Kawa Bath 3. Calinawan Cave 4. Daranak Falls 5. Pililla Windmill

They say that everyone needs someone who will call and say: “ Get dressed, we’re going on an adventure “. That is so true and I am happy I have an amazing squad who also loves adventures. So, when one of my friends asked who wanted to join her Tanay day tour, I was one of those who said, “ Count me in “. 😂 Certified lakwatsera here. 😎

The original plan was to visit Treasure Mountain alone, but since we found out that there are also other places in Rizal that we can visit in just 1 day, we came up with a Tanay day tour itinerary. We decided to go with a travel tour package we found on Facebook amounting to Php 999 each.

TREASURE MOUNTAIN

Sea of Clouds – this is the main reason why I wanted to visit Treasure mountain. Unluckily, we weren’t able to witness it, but we did enjoy the sunrise and the pictures-view of the mountain top.

Treasure Mountain

KAWA HOT BATH

I always wanted to go to Antique so I could experience Kawa Bath, good thing they already have it in Rizal.

Read here to know more about it and the rates: El Patio Razon Kawa Bath, Tanay Rizal | Travel Guide

kawa bath

CALINAWAN CAVE

We already tried Lumiang Sumaguing Cave Connection in Sagada, but Calinawan Cave is a different experience. We were amazed by the stalagmites, stalactites, and different rock formations inside the cave. This is also where they shot some of the scenes in La Luna Sangre, Bagani, Ang Probinsyano, and a lot more.

TANAY RIZAL DAY TOUR

DARANAK FALLS

Our next stop is Daranak falls. Swimming time it is. I wasn’t able to get a picture of the falls because I got excited and went swimming right away. Plus, there are a lot of people when we visit. We have the option to go to Bagtag Falls(private falls) but we opted to stay in Daranak Falls.

PILILLA WINDMILL

I never thought I could see windmills near the Metro, aside from the famous windmills in Ilocos and Guimaras. 😍

TANAY RIZAL DAY TOUR

How to get to Tanay, Rizal

From EDSA, it takes about 2 hours to get to Tanay, Rizal.

  • From EDSA Shaw, head to the terminal in front of Starmall and ride a van to Tanay (P70 per person). Alternatively, you may also ride a jeep (about P50 per person).

How to get around

If you know your way around Tanay, you can commute via jeepney to your destination. You can also charter a tricycle for the tour. Head to the public market or supermarket and look for the tricycle lines. However, it may be challenging to find a driver that will take you to different destinations especially since some of them are quite far (e.g., Pililla Windmills is not part of Tanay, but Pililla municipality).

So for me, the best way to explore different destinations in Tanay is by private car.

Budget and expenses

Here are the current rates of the destinations:

  • Calinawan Cave : Entrance fee – P20 per person / Guide fee – P200
  • Daranak Falls : Entrance fee – P50 per person, kids below 3 feet are free of charge / Picnic shed – P300/picnic table – P200
  • Batlag Falls : Entrance fee – P100 per person / Picnic table – P250
  • Treasure Mountain : Entrance fee – P150 per person
  • El Patio Razon : Entrance fee – P120 per person / kawa hot bath – P300 per person/hour
  • Pilillia Windmills ,  Regina Rica : None

There are also travel agencies offering convenient day trips in Tanay for around P999 per person which is for me the best way and hassle fee.

Traveling doesn’t always have to be expensive. Sometimes all you need to have is a will and great friends. 😘

Your Guide to Hiking in the Philippines

Treasure Mountain

Treasure Mountain Complete Guide (Itinerary + Tips)

Introduction.

Treasure Mountain is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Tanay, Rizal. It is located in Sitio Maysawa, Barangay Cuyambay, Tanay, Rizal. Treasure Mountain has an elevation of 505 meters above sea level. The place is well known for its magnificent sea of clouds and a superb view of the Sierra Madre mountain ranges. Officially known as Treasure Mountain Educational Campsite, this large private property offers an ideal place for a quick weekend vacation and for a quick escape from the busy city life. Treasure Mountain was opened in the year 2017.

According to locals, the mountain was named as such because it purposely aims to give the visitors or guests the lasting experience and moments that they will treasure endlessly. Nothing beats an adventure spent with people you treasure the most. Moreover, Treasure Mountain aims to create your own beautiful story. Unfolding each day into a moment that can never be truly described. The name may be common yet its true intention exceeds what may seem conventional. A place where wonderful creations seem effortlessly within reach.

Treasure Mountain is best for unwinding because the place is peaceful and calm. It is highly recommended for those who want to witness the sea of clouds, stunning sunrise and to those who want to experience a different nightlife by gazing at the sky full of stars. Moreover, it’s just a couple of hours away from Metro Manila and is very accessible by private vehicles.

Treasure Mountain has an effortless sea of clouds. There’s no need to do a taxing hike that people normally go through to witness breathtaking views. Moreover, even if someone doesn’t get to experience the sea of clouds, the place offers an amazing view of nature and different activities for relaxation. Moreover, it’s an awesome place to connect and bring us closer to nature. This place is perfect for camping and being with your kids, families, friends, groups, and loved ones.

Treasure Mountain activities include Spiders Web high ropes obstacle course, the whole course, and the High Swing. Also, they offer biking activities, waterfall chasing, overnight camping, and car glamping activity.

Treasure Mountain

Name: Treasure Mountain Educational Campsite Elevation: 505 MASL Address: Sitio Maysawa, Barangay Cuyambay, Tanay, Rizal Features: sea of clouds, panoramic views of the Sierra Madre mountain range, and Spider Web obstacle course

My trip to Treasure Mountain

The thought of going to someplace I’ve never been before had pushed me into an utmost excitement. Also, I’ve been wanting to experience the sea of clouds without going too far away from Manila. So I searched on the internet to find where I can witness the sea of clouds and I found one which is Treasure Mountain. As a result, I joined an organized tour going to Treasure Mountain. The tour package was 599 pesos excluding all entrance fees but I didn’t care about the cost because that is also for my health benefit.

I left my house and rode a taxi at 2:35 am. After several minutes I arrived at our meetup place in Greenfield, Mandaluyong. We are eight members in the group. When all the members of the group had been picked up, we headed to our tour destination.

After one hour and ten minutes of land travel, we arrived at the highway near Treasure Mountain around 4:15 am. Then our coordinator said to us that the Treasure Mountain is still closed and will be open at 5 am. As a result, some of the members slept in the van while other members drank coffee at the small store beside the highway.

jump off point

Then after some thirty minutes of waiting, our van entered the road going to Treasure Mountain jump-off point. After a few minutes, we reached the jump-off point. We paid the registration fee to our guide and we waited for the go signal to start hiking. While waiting, I look up at the night sky filled with countless stars and a bright quarter moon. For this reason, I said to myself truly the heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

After the go signal of our guide, we started the hike. We opened our flashlights and we started walking. As I walk I feel my foot getting heavier because of the excessive mud on the road. I didn’t expect that the trail would be so muddy. According to our guide, it rained yesterday so the trail is muddy.

marker of Treasure Mountain

After several minutes of walking, we reached the registration site of Treasure Mountain around 5:47 am. Near the registration site, we saw a restaurant that sells breakfast food. As a result, we had our heavy breakfast. The food is great but a little bit pricey. At the restaurant, we see a sea of clouds, beautiful sunrise, and a calming view of the Sierra Madre Mountain ranges.

Also, I can see the famous Mt. Kulis, Heart Peak of Mt. Kulis, Mt. Gulod, and the Laiban trilogy. In my opinion, this is one of the best places to have breakfast with the incredible view from the top of the mountain. Our group experienced beautiful scenery. We take our time to relax, unwind, eat our food and take pictures at several instagrammable and picturesque spots. Moreover, the restroom in Treasure Mountain is clean and well maintained.

breakfast at Treasure Mountain

The tourist I spoke to said that he had been here many times but he was still impressed with the place. To be honest, I’m in love at first sight in this place. It’s far from noise and pollution. I have nothing to say but Good morning. The photo speaks for itself. It is a wonderful place with a nice view of nature. Also, I can see some kids with their families, I think it’s a very good place for family outings and bonding.

view of Spider Web high ropes obstacle

After savoring the view at the restaurant, our group walked towards the Spider Web obstacle course. Then after a short walk, we reached the Treasure Mountain view deck. We take pictures and later we go to the Spider Web registration site at 7 am. We pay the fee to begin our Spider Web high ropes obstacle course. Some of the members choose the whole course while some of the members choose only the Spider’s Web.

Spider Web high ropes obstacle course fee

We enjoy the obstacle course and climbing up with the necessary equipment. Our guide took pictures and videos for us. The Spider Web high ropes obstacle course is an electrifying and a thrilling experience for us, especially the high swing.

High Swing at Treasure Mountain

Some members said that the high swing is intoxicating. On the other hand, some members said it was truly satisfying to experience. Also, according to the guide handling the Spider Web obstacle course, a maximum of 10 people at a time should be at the top of the Spider Web to ensure safety. I think the Spider Web is the main highlight of Treasure Mountain. The weather is great and the view at the top of the Spider Web is really amazing. This is one of the most pleasing morning views I had experienced.

After finishing the Treasure Mountain Spider Web high ropes obstacle course around 8:10 am, we relax and take a rest for twenty-five minutes. Then we go to a rock formation just beside the Spider Web. We explore the place, enjoy the fresh air and take selfies, pictures, and videos. The view is spectacular and I feel the serenity and tranquility. I feel like I’m in another country. From the rock formation, I can see Mt. Daraitan. We finished taking pictures at rock formation around 9:13 am.

taking pictures

After that, we went to the large nipa hut. We can see several tents just outside the nipa hut. According to our guide, the rented tent is waterproof, has beddings and is safe. After a few minutes of sharing thoughts and relaxing in the nipa hut, we take group pictures outside the nipa hut and then walk towards the entrance of Treasure Mountain. We take several pictures at the marker then we continue walking toward our next destination which is El Patio Razon. It is 1.5 kilometers away from Treasure Mountain.

Treasure Mountain marker

After twenty-five minutes of trekking, we reached El Patio Razon. We took a quick rest and ate our lunch at El Patio Razon at 10:25 am. I was surprised that the five members of the group, all teachers from Cavite, brought overnight camping food. I should have ordered my lunch but because of the number of dishes and rice they brought, I didn’t order. Therefore, I thank them for the satisfying lunch.

Then after our lunch, we take a long rest. Some members of the group take a nap while our tour guide is playing outstanding guitar. After resting we explored the El Patio Razon. We took pictures at Hobbit House, Bali inspired Bird’s Nest, Heart Bali, Bee Hive Nest, and Stairway to Heaven.

El Patio Razon

After relaxing and unwinding at El Patio Razon, our group decided to go to Lambingan Hills. The other option for a side trip is Sierra Madre Mountain Resort and Hotel but the majority of the group members didn’t like the view so our van heads to Lambingan Hills at 1:14 am.

We reached the parking area at 1:40 pm. It’s good that our van entered the Lambingan Hills parking area because the tour guide told us to walk for thirty minutes in order to reach this place. On the other hand, we think it will take us one hour trekking before we reach Lambingan Hills because most of it is ascending.

Lambingan Hills view

We explored the place, and we ordered soft drinks. Our group had snacks at Lambingan Hills. The hills are full of beautiful plants and the place is so calm and peaceful. Also, there’s a lot of tree swings we can ride on. After that, we continued to take pictures at the top of the hills. We can see Laguna Lake from a distance and some mountains of Rizal from the top. In my own opinion Lambingan Hills is more a relaxing place than El Patio Razon because Lambingan Hills is more spacious and has an astounding view of the surrounding.

We left Lambingan Hills around 5 pm heading back to Manila. I slept in the van and after two hours of land travel, we reached Greenfield at 7:15 pm. I’m so happy and thankful to be part of this trip. The trip is all worth it. Thanks be to God for another unforgettable trip to Rizal province.

For example, a bus ride from Waltermart Taytay to Cainta Junction covers only less than 3 km and welcomes passengers.

1. Go hiking at Rodriguez, Tanay, and Talim Island

The country is blessed with hiking spots in many provinces, but Rizal probably has some of the most achievable day hikes for beginners. Try these easy to moderate climbs in Rodriguez, Tanay, and Talim Island in Binangonan.

Mount Pamitinan, Rodriguez – a doable hike to sharp karst peaks

rizal - mount pamitinan

Mount Pamitinan , a rocky mountain with a moderate difficulty climbing level, consists of sharp, scenic limestone formations. For beginners who want a challenge, hiking Mount Pamitinan is for you as the terrain ranges from leveled to muddy and rocky.

rizal - mount pamitinan in rodriguez

Guides are available at the local Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) office, and guide fees start at P80 (~USD1.57) per person, for five hikers. We recommend climbing on weekdays to avoid the weekend crowds, and to start your hike early for cooler temperatures.

Difficulty level: Moderate Admission fee: P80 (~USD1.57) Address: Sitio Nino, Rodriguez, 1860 Rizal

Mount Daraitan, Tanay – a more challenging but still manageable climb

rizal - mount daraitan

With a moderate difficulty level, 739m-tall Mount Daraitan is for those who’ve done minor climbs before but want to level up. The climb is a little steep, but this is balanced by its well-maintained trail.

The fee for a day hike is P500 (~USD9.80) and guides are available at the barangay hall. Hit up the Tinipak River for a cooling dip after your climb, and stay the night at campsites near the Daraitan Barangay Hall for a complete outdoor experience.

Difficulty level: Moderate Admission fee: P500 (~USD9.80) Address: Border of Tanay, Rizal and General Nakar, Quezon

Mount Tagapo, Talim Island – an easy hike to a green, grassy mountain

rizal - mount tagapo

For a 360-degree view of Laguna de Bay, Mount Tagapo’s  location smack in the middle of the lake is hard to beat.

Low on the difficulty scale, the 438m-tall mountain is ideal for those who are first-timers in hiking, and just want to see if hiking is for them. Hitch a 30-minute boat ride from Rizal’s Binangonan port and log your visit at the Janosa barangay hall. From there, getting to the summit only takes less than 2 hours, and a huge part of the trail is grassy.

Difficulty level: Easy Registration fee: P20 (~USD0.39) Guide fee (sign up at barangay hall): P400 (~USD7.84) per five hikers Address: Talim Island, Laguna de Bay, and Binangonan, Rizal

2. Visit Rizal’s natural wonders

Unlike most provinces in the country, Rizal doesn’t have pristine beaches to boast about. What it has, though, are limestone landscapes and jaw-dropping waterscapes such as waterfalls and rivers.

Tinipak River – surrounded by cream-colored rocks and mountains

rizal - tinipak river

The huge boulders and stunning rock formations in and around Tinipak River make it not just a place for a refreshing dip after a trek but a perfect photo op spot as well. Some trekking in good climbing shoes is needed to get here, but the views are worth it.

Tour guides are mandatory and are available for P500 (~USD9.81) for a day tour. We suggest combining your trip here with a Mount Daraitan climb – see above.

Difficulty level: Moderate Registration fee: P40 (~USD0.78) per head Address: Daraitan, Tanay, Rizal

Masungi Georeserve – conquer limestone peaks in Baras

rizal - masungi georeserve

Surround yourself with karst (or limestone) peaks and thriving forests at Masungi Georeserve , a protected area in Baras. You can choose trails that are easy or a bit challenging, depending on your fitness level.

Outdoorsy adventurers and beginners alike will find plenty to do at the reserve where two hiking trails and adventure courses are set up in this picturesque karst (limestone) landscape and forests in Baras. The Discovery Trail allows you to experience the karst terrain through the Sapot, the spider-web like metal net, a cave formation, and hanging bridges and ropeways. Meanwhile, the Legacy Trail is mostly grasslands where you’ll take part in conservation projects such as tree planting.

As this is a protected area, trail visits are upon request, but it’s worth the wait. It’s not every day you get to tour a protected area that’s unlike any other terrain in the country and participate in its reforestation efforts.

After a tiring but rewarding trail experience, Masungi Georeserve can prepare a buffet feast for you upon request. Just book a private dining setup for a minimum of 20 persons in your group in advance.

Using a private vehicle, drive down Marcos Highway and find the entrance of Masungi Georeserve at the right side of the road after seeing Garden Cottages, Foremost Farms, and Palo Alto markers. You can also book shuttle services to and from Masungi Georeserve with their travel partner, Tanlines Philippines.

Difficulty level: Easy to moderate trails available Address: Kilometer 47, Marcos Highway, Baras, 1970 Rizal Conservation fee: P1,500 (~USD29.39) per person (weekdays), P1,800 (~USD35.27) (weekends) Mobile: 0908 888 70 02, 0995 186 99 11 Website

Daranak Falls – splash in the cool waters

rizal - daranak falls

Tanay has no shortage of natural wonders, and completing its list of must-visit sites is Daranak Falls. The falls is a popular destination for those who want to beat the city heat without breaking the bank.

Go swimming in the cool waters of Daranak Falls or take the plunge from a designated jump-off spot. To complete the outing experience, a picnic with the family or your group of friends is also recommended. Bring your own packed food and don’t forget to dispose of your trash properly.

The pool is a bit deep so it’s best to bring your own floaters. You can also rent a salbabida or life vest, each for P50 (~USD0.98) .

Admission fee: P50 (~USD0.98) Address: Tanay, Rizal Opening hours: 8AM-5.30PM, Daily Mobile: 0998 988 1590

3. Explore ancestral homes in Pililla and Rodriguez

Ancestral homes in Rizal are like time capsules, transporting spectators to the decades and centuries from way back.

Several ancestral homes still stand in the province today, but these two stand out for their history, as well as their well-preserved interiors and imposing exteriors.

Bahay na Bato heritage house – filming site for historical and horror flicks

rizal - bahay na bato heritage house in pililla

A remnant of the Spanish era in the Philippines, the Bahay na Bato heritage house in Pililla features stone walls, wood carvings, old furniture, and colonial decor that will transport you to the way of life centuries ago.

rizal - bahay na bato house pililla

Said to be a former precidencia or government house during colonial rule, it is well-preserved and packed with antique pieces and carvings. A caretaker will be able to show you around upon arrival, but do enquire with the Imatong Barangay Hall in advance to arrange a visit.

Admission fee: Free, but donations are encouraged Address: Pililia, 1910 Rizal

Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Ancestral House – the longest-serving Senate President’s estate

rizal - eulogio amang rodriguez ancestral house

Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez’s ancestral home has been converted into a museum called the Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Ancestral House . Featuring the original furniture and decor of the house as well as memorabilia from his time as a public servant, it also offers a peek at his family’s baston collection, vintage photographs, and commissioned paintings.

Rodriguez once served as Rizal province’s governor and was the longest-serving Senate President in the history of the Philippines, serving for 10 years. During his time as a legislator, he pushed for the improvement of the lives of the masses.

Address: Rodriguez, 1860 Rizal Admission fee: Free Opening hours: Temporarily closed

4. Sample local food such as suman , cashew nuts, and bibingka

Each province in the Philippines has a delicacy or dish that represents their culture. If Cebu has lechon and Baguio has strawberries, Rizal takes pride in suman , cashew nuts, and bibingka as their leading pasalubong treats for foodies outside the province.

Suman and cashew nuts – favorite pasalubong for Antipolo Cathedral pilgrims

rizal - suman

After visiting or hearing mass at Antipolo Cathedral, don’t forget to drop by the stalls selling suman and cashew nuts , popular pasalubongs from Antipolo, outside the church. The slightly salty, glutinous suman is best paired with hot chocolate, sugar, or latik (coconut crumbs) and usually costs around P120 (~USD2.36) per dozen. Cashew nuts, on the other hand, cost around P150 (~USD2.95) per 100 grams.

Bibingka , sapin-sapin , and other kakanin – take-home kakanin from Cainta’s favorite pasalubong shop

rizal - aling kikas food products

Meanwhile in downtown Cainta, Aling Kika’s Food Products sells bibingka (baked rice cakes), sapin-sapin (colorful layered glutinous rice cakes), and other types of kakanin (sticky rice desserts).

It is located a few meters away from the municipal hall. Lines can be long, but we suggest you don’t skip buying from Aling Kika’s as their kakanin products taste divine yet are easy on the pocket. Prices start at P170 (~USD3.33) for half a tray.

Fried itik – adobo-style fried duck

rizal - fried itik duck

Two towns away from Cainta is Angono , the art capital where itikans or duck farms are plenty. When in Angono, go directly to the Fried Itik Lane , an entire row of fried duck ( itik ) stalls, and buy fried itik for around P160 (~USD3.13) .

Some stalls prepare fried itik as is, fried and dipped in sauce, while others serve kalderetang itik ( itik in a tomato-based stew) o r adobong itik sa gata (adobo-style duck in coconut milk).

However, to taste the original, head straight to Plonia’s Fried Itik, the first stall to sell the delicacy in the 1970s. Aling Plonia cooks her fried itik adobo-style, tenderizing the duck first then frying it to make it juicier.

5. Try unusual fare such as beef testicles, deep-fried frogs, and fried crickets

rizal - balaw balaw exotic foods

Foodies looking for something out of the ordinary can head to Balaw-Balaw Restaurant and Art Gallery , known for serving exotic dishes that might look weird to most, but actually taste good.

rizal - uok wood grubs

Interesting items on the menu include adobo-style Sizzling Butt and Balls (P300, ~USD5.92) or beef privates, Nilasing na Palaka or deep-fried frogs marinated in gin (P330, ~USD6.52) , and kamaro (fried crickets) at P400 (~USD7.90) .

rizal - minaluto

Less adventurous eaters who are tagging along can always stick to traditional Filipino dishes such as grilled meat and seafood dishes starting at P50 (~USD0.98) per gram, sides such as Sinigang na Hipon (shrimp in sour tamarind soup) at P290 (~USD5.69) , and Bicol Express (P285, ~USD5.63) .

A must-try is minaluto (from P330, ~USD6.52) , composed of rice, different kinds of seafood, pork adobo, and salted egg – an affordable one-dish meal with assorted Filipino staples.

Stop by the restaurant’s folk art gallery for some post-dinner art and heritage appreciation too.

6. Celebrate with locals in their colorful fiestas

Festivals in Rizal may not be as popular as the mammoth fiestas of Dinagyang Festival, Ati-Atihan, or Panagbenga, but locals sure have their own ways of celebrating on the streets.

Join the party in these town fiestas in Taytay, Cainta, and Angono.

Hamaka Festival (main celebration on the 3rd week of February) – pageants, parades, and a variety show with celebrity guests

taytay hamaka festival

Hamaka Festival is Taytay’s almost 2-week-long thanksgiving for their town’s bountiful year owing to their woodwork and textile industry.

Mayor’s Night and a variety show with celebrity guests, the festival’s main events, are celebrated every 3rd Sunday of February. Kick-off activities include colorful parades, pageants, a sportsfest, singing contests, and boodle fights.

Higantes Festival (22-23rd November) – the festival of giants

angono higantes festival

Higantes Festival is a parade of over 100 towering papier-mache giants representing the industry or unique characteristic of each administrative division, or barangay, in the town of Angono in Rizal. Higante versions of popular personalities also join the parade, from historical figures to even celebs such as a variety show host from Angono. The grand parade usually starts at SM Center Angono and ends at the municipal compound.

During the Spanish era, these giants were caricature-like depictions of hacienda (estate or plantation) owners that the locals didn’t like, but now has become a celebration of local pride and icons. After the higantes are painstankingly constructed, two people wear the higantes , which are made up of a combination of bamboo, thin iron bars, and rattan.

The festival is celebrated on the 22nd and 23rd of November every year, and recent years’ celebrations have featured Zumba fests, cosplay, and youth games, contests, and concerts.

SumBingTik Festival (1st December) – a festival of suman, bibingka, and latik

cainta sumbingtik festival

Every 1st December, the municipality of Cainta celebrates its founding anniversary and the feast of the Our Lady of Light. Houses are decorated with native materials and embellished with accents resembling various types of kakanin . SumBingTik is a portmanteau of suman , bibingka , and latik , the town’s major delicacies.

Join the party by sampling their kakanin and bringing some home. The best part is, during the festival, the kakanin are free for everyone.

7. Visit churches in Antipolo, Cainta, and Morong

Most churches in the province were constructed during Spanish rule, so aside from featuring European architecture, they also serve as reminders of our colonial past.

When in Rizal, drop by these stunning places of worship, particularly these three in Antipolo, Cainta, and Morong.

Antipolo Cathedral – get a blessing any day of the year

antipolo cathedral rizal

The National Shrine Of Our Lady Of Peace And Good Voyage, more commonly known as Antipolo Cathedral , is a historical landmark in the city. Its image of the Virgin Mary is said to be miraculous for protecting ships from the tumultuous Pacific Ocean in the 1600s-1700s, when many ships were lost and had sunk.

If you’re going somewhere far away soon, you can pray for the Virgin Mary’s guidance during your trip. Non-believers can also just dedicate a minute of silence while inside the church.

Every Maundy Thursday, many pilgrims go to the streets to join the alay lakad (procession) to Antipolo Cathedral. You can join the procession if you happen to be a Catholic, or even as a guest if you’re curious about what goes on during alay lakad . You’ll see volunteers setting up booths on the curbside and giving bottled water, snacks, and ready-to-eat meals to tired pilgrims.

9. Shop trendy clothing at Taytay Tiangge

bagpi garment center taytay tiangge

If you’re planning to revamp your closet, Divisoria or Greenhills may be the first tiangge to cross your mind. But insiders say that some vendors from those bazaars source their items from Taytay Tiangge , so it doesn’t hurt to head to the main supplier to score trendy pieces at the lowest possible price.

taytay tiangge

Taytay is a major producer of textile and is home to many dressmaking shops, which is why the pieces sold at their tiangges are extremely low-priced. You can buy tops from P50 , a skirt from P70 , and a blazer-and-shorts set for P250 .

But it’s not just clothing that can be found in the stalls. Bedsheets, rugs, and tablecloths are also available in cute prints. If you’re coming from Quezon City, Pasig, or Marikina, the drive to Taytay Tiangge can be under an hour, under normal traffic.

Address: Manila East Road, Taytay, 1870 Rizal

10. Discover the oldest known artworks in the Philippines

angono petroglyphs

Take a trip to the Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs, said to be the oldest known artwork in the entire country. It dates back to as early as the 3rd millennium BC and was only discovered in 1965. Locals were already aware of the petroglyphs but didn’t pay too much attention to them, thinking that they were merely drawings on rocks.

angono petroglyphs drawings

From afar, the petroglyphs are simply boulders on the hillside part of Angono. Upon a closer look, you’ll see stick drawings of animals such as turtles, frogs, and lizards, as well as images of humans.

angono petroglyphs viewing deck

A viewing deck and pathway were constructed to enable visitors to see the petroglyphs from a few meters away. These carvings are fragile, so touching the rocks may damage them. Although entrance is free, commuters have to take a tricycle from Angono, costing P200 one-way.

Camp Boa: Off-Roading, Roadtrip, Picnic, Day Tour (Rizal, Philippines)

Our first excursion since the pandemic began! And what a worthy first trip that was!

Ticking Our Pandemic Trip Checklist:

So it took us a while to go on an excursion because I had a hard time looking for a place that ticks all the boxes on our checklist! (See related post: Traveling When You’re Paranoid During the Pandemic )

In a nutshell, we chose Camp Boa because it’s:

  • Little to no contact with staff (More below)
  • Limited number of people inside
  • Allows us to park our car at the site itself
  • Spacious area so we can “set up camp”

Getting to Camp Boa:

Camp Boa is located in Rizal. You can easily locate it via Waze or Google Maps.

The thing you need to know about this place is THERE ARE 2 RIVER CROSSINGS  that you have to pass through! It’s our first time to experience off-roading and it was very interesting. 😉

We used a 4×4 to get there and this is also what they recommended as well. If you don’t have a 4×4, best to ask them prior to booking. Sometimes the rivers are shallow, sometimes they get a bit deeper. Travel at your own risk!

We also chose Camp Boa was because it’s not very far. It took us only around 2 hours to get there. We didn’t even need bathroom breaks. Yay haha.

IMPORTANT: No signal at the area so you have to save your maps offline.

Limited Guests

One of the reasons we also chose Camp Boa was because they limit the number of guests: only 20 pax (or 5 cars) per day. So if your whole group is already 20, then the whole place is yours to enjoy.

We were only 5 when we went (on a Tuesday) but we didn’t really see other guests! Either they were stationed far away from us or there weren’t any guests at all. It was wonderful and felt like we had the place to ourselves.

When we arrived, we were met by the caretaker who just informed us that if we needed any assistance, she’ll be over there to help. Thankfully too because we DID need her help when a stray dog circled around our food for a while during lunch hahaha. But other than that, everything was peaceful!

Camp Boa Rates: P500/head day tour and P800/head overnight. Kids 5yo and below are free.

Setting Up Camp

When we arrived, we were assigned a “cottage.” Our plan was to set up our toilet tent (see below for more info haha,) tables and chairs and then leave all our things in the car.

The hut was nice though. So, after wiping down the surfaces, we propped up our makeshift sink (basically, a water dispenser) and also placed our other bags there for easy access.

Toilet Set-Up

So I’ve shared extensively about our toilet set-up already on my previous post “Traveling When You’re Paranoid During the Pandemic.” But here’s a photo again. It’s a pop-up shower tent but we used it as a makeshift cubicle. Then each of us had our own portable urinal to use.

This was such a great buy because we’d also use this cubicle when we needed to change clothes. Hehe.

Lunch by the River

It was our anniversary celebration (9 years!!) so Mor brought steak and cod! Yummy!

He cooked them while I was playing in the river with the kids. Typical us. 😉

Mor just cooked the steak and cod. The rest were already pre-cooked (all take-outs haha) and we just reheated them at the grill.

Had a beautiful picnic with the family!

The kids spent the entire day playing in the river. They only stopped for lunch break and went on to swim again after. It was their first time to swim in a river and they didn’t want to leave. I don’t blame them!

Very clear and clean! Dylan was singing the entire time. I’m not kidding. THE. ENTIRE. TIME.

Mor tried to relax a bit by propping his chair as he drank ginger beer. But Luke didn’t let him. Haha.

I joined him but requested if we could transfer to a shallower part so my shorts won’t get wet. Hehehe.

Later on, Luke wanted to try the tire swing. I let him (well, after I disinfected the rope and tire! :D)

Pleasantly surprised and exceeded our expectations. It was a very memorable trip. Highly recommend the place. You can contact them at their Facebook page: Camp Boa

Things to remember:

  • 2 river crossings
  • Bring your trash home

I hope they maintain limiting guests to only 20 pax! We definitely wanna go back again soon!

Philippine Independence Day: Events to celebrate our freedom this June

Philippine Independence Day: Events in celebration of freedom this June

The Philippines will mark its 126th Independence Day on June 12, with lots and lots of events celebrating our freedom, renewing calls for patriotism, and harking on Filipino pride.

Philippine Independence Day used to be celebrated on July 4 , alongside the United States' own Independence Day, up until 1962 upon former President Diosdado Macapagal's issuance of Proclamation No. 28, s. 1962 .

The proclamation recognizes the establishment of the Philippine Republic by the Revolutionary Government under Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo on June 12, 1898 — and was issued after the U.S. House of Representatives thumbed down a proposed bill that would accord an additional $73 million in war reparations to the Philippines.

If you've caught the simultaneous flag-raising ceremonies in the past week, it means that Independence Day festivities have already begun, with more on the way.

For this month of June, take part in these events in remembrance and celebration of freedom.

'Larry Alcala: Slices of Life, Wit and Humor' exhibit

The park was built to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the natural environment. 9. Nelly’s Mystical Cave

Interior of Nelly's Mystical Cave, Antipolo

Antipolo’s reputation as a pilgrimage site extends beyond the shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage with the existence of Nelly’s Mystical Cave, an Antipolo tourist spot located in Sitio Boso-boso, Barangay San Jose. Just like the famous statue of the Virgin Mary at the Antipolo church, the cave is believed to be a place with religious significance, and the story of its discovery is as enchanting as a fairytale.

According to its owner Inday Nelly, she was 7 years old when she awoke from a dream that left her with visions of a mysterious cave. A sense of duty compelled her to leave her home town in Iloilo to travel the country in search of the natural underground chamber. Eventually, she found it in Antipolo. Using a makeshift explosive, she to blew up a tiny coin-sized opening into an entrance that led to her mystical cave. Inside she found intricate limestone formations that were shaped like biblical events and religious formations.

Today, the site may be reached through a steep set of stairs. Upon entry, you will be greeted by huge stalactites and stalagmites and a natural basin that collects dripping water from the rock formations. The water is believed to have healing properties, while the entire cave is up to 8 stories deep, with only the first floor open to tourists.

There are lighting fixtures everywhere that allow visitors to see interesting sights like glittering white walls in various corners, bell-shaped formations, and popular figures like the “Eagle Pride” and “Sheep of Humility”.

If you don’t mind hiking up a rocky cliff for roughly 15 minutes, then follow a local guide to bring you to the top of a hill located outside the cave. Upon reaching the summit marked by a life-sized wooden cross, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of Rizal province and Laguna Lake.

8. Casa Santa Museum

Santa Claus figures in the Casa Santa Museum in Antipolo

The Christmas season is the most popular holiday in the Philippines, and no other place exemplifies its significance more than the Casa Santa Museum, a place devoted to all things related to the Season of Giving.

Casa Santa Museum is located inside Jardin de Miramar Events Venue in San Isidro Antipolo City. It features more than 3,700 Santa and Christmas themed items collected from different parts of the world, highlighting various Christmas traditions and stories from other cultures. The museum is divided among 5 various attractions, namely Santa’s Toy Factory, Balay Belen, The Grinch, Christmas Village, and Lego Wall.

Santa’s Toy Factory is a replica of where Santa’s elves are hard at work making Christmas gifts for children. It displays statues of elves creating toys from different time frames worldwide, with wall clocks reminding them to stay on schedule, while another section shows a replica of a kitchen where elves have their meals during their breaks.

Next is the Balay Belen, a section that highlights nativity sets from various places worldwide that show different versions of the Christmas narrative. It is a collection built up through the years and collected with care for everyone to enjoy. After a heartwarming section comes an area dedicated to the popular Christmas-hating Dr. Seuss character known as The Grinch, where a life-sized figure is displayed.

The Christmas Village is home to a collection of Christmas themed items collected over the span of 5 years, and is arranged to look like a magical Christmas from a children’s storybook. Finally there’s the Lego Wall section which depicts different events and activities before Santa’s arrival in children’s houses.

7. Boso-Boso Church

Front view of the Boso-Boso Church in Antipolo

Formally known as the Nuestra Señora de la Annunciata Parish Church, Boso-Boso Church is a Roman Catholic parish church located in Sitio Old Boso-Boso, Barangay San Jose. First established by Franciscan missionaries in the mid 15th century, the church is more than 400 years old, making it one of the oldest churches in the Rizal region, certainly older than the more famous Antipolo Cathedral. It lends a serene presence in its remote location, hidden as it were in a leafy area on a valley beneath the Sierra Madre mountain ranges, seemingly frozen in time.

The ancient church is flanked by two majestic acacia trees and is surrounded by other leafy trees. There is a huge shaded courtyard in front of it while multi-colored San Francisco leaves stand beneath the trees. It has a sparse Romanesque architecture that has survived countless catastrophes, both man-made and otherwise, and therein lies its mysterious charm and ethereal beauty.

The Jesuits took over the church in 1741 but had to leave when they were expelled from the Philippines in 1768. A secular order took charge when a devastating earthquake damaged most of the structure in 1880. It was never rebuilt and could have been lost forever in the 1930s when the residents were forced by the American administration to leave the place because a dam was supposed to be built. The proposed dam project was eventually abandoned. A fire burned down what was left of the church during the Japanese occupation, but it was rebuilt by the Camillian order in 1986, restoring it to its present-day condition.

That the church is still around is a testament to the stability of its foundations and the unwavering faith of its Catholic devotees.

6. Hinulugang Taktak

The waterfalls in Hinulugang Taktak, Antipolo

For first time visitors making their rounds on various Rizal tourist spots, an Antipolo tour package wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Hinulugang Taktak, a popular tourist spot that provides the quintessential Antipolo tour experience: it has a verdant forest, a Marian shrine, and a natural waterfall with a name derived from local folklore. The traditional story goes that back in the 15th century, a bell was thrown into the waterfall because the local residents deemed it too loud. The root word “hulog” means “to fall” in Filipino, while “taktak” translates to a large bell.

Hinulugang Taktak is located roughly 1.7 KM from another iconic Antipolo tourist spot, the Antipolo Cathedral, and is accessible via the Taktak Road. The falls is about 22 M tall and 26 meters wide. It is such an iconic destination that a local hymn of Antipolo that was composed back in 1929 mentions the park, indicating that it was already a famous tourist spot. It is now a protected landscape and the second most popular national park in the Philippines.

It boasts of at least 11 species of trees in the surrounding area. Besides enjoying a view of the famous waterfall, the park has other recreational activities for nature lovers, adrenaline junkies, and even Marian devotees. These facilities include a public swimming pool, a hanging bridge built above a canopy of trees, a man-made spiderweb platform suspended over the waterfall, wall climbing facilities, and a meditation area with a statue of the Virgin Mary.

5. Philip's Sanctuary

The pool area in Phillip_s Sanctuary, Antipolo

Philip’s Sanctuary offers much more than a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of city living. It is also an eco-adventure mountain resort filled with exciting facilities and fun leisure activities perfect for large team-building events, family excursions, spiritual retreats, birthday parties, and as a workshop venue. It even has a chapel which is perfect for weddings and other gatherings for special occasions.

Located in Sitio Panlilingan along Pestano Farm Road, this agro-forestry farm also hosts tree planting events to encourage the development of plants and flowers in the vicinity. It has a campsite where visitors can pitch a tent, enjoy the natural surroundings, and even build a bonfire at night. It has an aquaculture area with a pond and a river for farm-bred tilapia and pangasius fish, while an organic fruit farm is also nearby. They grow exotic tropical fruits like rambutan, guava, avocados, and dragon fruit.

The resort offers overnighters with simple huts and dorm-type places that can accommodate large groups. They offer food packages at the Breakfast Club that serves “silog” fare like longganisa with rice and a side of egg, which is much-needed fuel to help you navigate the grueling but fun obstacle courses available in the resort, which include activities involving ropes, water-based obstacle courses, and mud sliding through a huge piece of heavy-duty waterproof cloth.

Kids and adults alike will enjoy catching their own farmed fish using fishing facilities available for rent, while those who have never seen an ostrich in the flesh will enjoy the sight of these flightless birds around the resort. Besides swimming both at the pool and the river, other fun activities include zip lining, kayaking, and riding a bike through the bike trails.

4. Cloud 9

The hanging bridge leading to Cloud 9 Antipolo's viewing deck

Cloud 9 is famous for its panoramic view of Metro Manila, particularly in the evening when city's shimmering lightscome alive from one of the highest vantage points among Antipolo resorts  nearby. Nestled along Sumulong Highway, Cloud 9 sits at an elevation of approximately 221 M, which explains the chillier weather.

For brave visitors who are not afraid of heights, try getting up to the sky bridge to get a rare 360 view of the city. Aptly called the 360 Point View, this hanging bridge is suspended between two viewing decks. It provides an unobstructed view of the Sierra Madre mountain ranges and city skyline of both Antipolo and nearby areas.

The exit from the 360 Point View leads to a stairway that displays various paintings, art installations, and wood carvings made by local artists. This extends toward an area called 7th Heaven, a leafy hanging bridge adorned with flowers, with a resident monkey greeting guests at the exit.

While the view is the resort’s main attraction, it also offers other attractions that showcase the city’s thriving local art scene as well as the storied history of Antipolo and Rizal. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted with an art exhibit that include a 29 foot long mural of the iconic image of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage along with other pilgrimage sites in the area and a mosaic of the Philippine map decorating the ceramic floor.

Cloud 9 is also a sought-after place for weddings, conventions, and other large gatherings, with an estate that houses 7 venue halls that can host anywhere from 30 people up to 400 guests per venue, while accommodations consist of 78 rooms. Resort facilities include 2 swimming pools, a zip line, sports and leisure club, and a restaurant with a viewing deck overlooking the city.

3. Mount Purro Nature Reserve

The pool area in the Mount Purro Nature Reserve, Antipolo

Mount Purro Nature Reserve is a family-run eco-park located near the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range, less than 45 km distance from Metro Manila by land. As an eco-park, this resort does not have a few standard modern amenities like television sets, air-conditioning, or free WIFI, and before you wonder why it’s no. 3 in our list of must-see Antipolo resorts , understand that this is precisely why people flock to this travel destination.

Mount Purro encourages guests to disconnect from a busy life, to go on a digital detox voluntarily, and engage with their surroundings. Far from being a major put-off, this ethos of environmental conservation is one of the main reasons for its popular tourist spot near Manila. It does have more than its fair share of fun outdoor activities such as forest hiking, river walking, putting up a bonfire, swimming at the pool, and tree planting.

Their cozy farm-style accommodations include cottages and cabins good for 2-4 persons, dorm room style rooms for up to 15 people, and areas to pitch a tent with shared toilets. Guests have access to facilities such as swimming pool, game room, cabanas and gazebos, and nature playscape. The resort has many open-air function areas surrounded by nature perfect for large gatherings, conventions, and team-building activities.

It has a restaurant called Loli’s Kitchen that serves home-cooked plated meals specializing in Filipino dishes prepared from scratch, just like your typical Filipino comfort food. The dining area is located in a cozy “bahay kubo” or a nipa hut with bamboo tables and wooden furniture that sets the tone for a communal family-style dining experience.

2. Antipolo Cathedral

The altar in Antipolo Cathedral

The Antipolo Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church located in the Sierra Madre Mountains roughly 23 km east of Metro Manila. Also known as the Immaculate Conception Parish, the church’s major attraction is a 17th-century wooden statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary that is formally referred to as Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage or Our Lady of Antipolo.

The black madonna is one of the most highly venerated representations of the Immaculate Conception in the country, attracting millions of devotees both in the Philippines and abroad.

Its present location was the place where the image kept on turning up after mysteriously vanishing several times. The image would be found on a tree called a “tipolo”, prompting the townsfolk to take it as a divine sign to build the church on that exact location.

The statue is believed to be miraculous, and the claim appeared to be substantiated by several successful sea voyages across the Pacific Ocean during the Spanish colonial period at the height of the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade. The black madonna served as 6 other ship’s patron saint and protector on the journey from Manila to Mexico during the 1600s.

Annual pilgrimages to the celebrated shrine reach the highest numbers in May, a month traditionally dedicated to the blessed virgin Mary. The most avid devotees can be seen going on an “alay lakad” or a “walk offering” by traveling from from Manila to the Antipolo parish on foot, just in time to hear mass at dawn.

1. Pinto Art Museum

Paintings in the Pinto Art Museum, Antipolo

Pinto Art Museum is located within a sprawling two-hectare estate designed by popular Filipino artist Antonio Leaño. The artworks seamlessly intermingle with the plants and flowers in the Silangan Garden, an arboretum filled with vibrant flora and fauna. The large complex is owned by art patron and neurologist, Dr. Joven Cuanang.

The exhibit space and art museum is home to a vast collection of local art he acquired through the years, his collection beginning in earnest in the late 1980’s when he championed a revolutionary art collective called The Salingpusa. His patronage of local art saw their full expression through dedicated connoisseurship and acquisions, which continues to this day.

The museum opened its doors to the public in 2010, it has become one of the 25 most Instagrammed museums in the world, belonging to a list that includes The Louvre in Paris and MoMa in New York City. Some of the distinguished names with rotating exhibitions at the museum include Elmer Borlongan, Rodel Tapaya, Marina Cruz, Joy Mallari, and Mark Justiniani. The museum houses a vast collection of contemporary art and primitive art such as statues or images from the Ifugao region in the Northern part of the Philippines.

A new wing called Gallery 7 was recently opened. It is a space that displays the latest Filipino artworks and installations. Inside there is a museum shop, a cafe called Cafe Rizal by Peppermill, and a tattoo shop for anyone interested to wear permanent markings on their skin.
