Beyoncé is welcomed home by Houston’s chrome-covered fans

By Lauren Bulbin and Mark Felix | Sep 25, 2023

Houston’s NRG Stadium was brimming with a new kind of energy this weekend. The Beyhive swarmed the city for the arrival and performance of Beyoncé. This was the Queen’s triumphant return to her hometown stage, where she performed for thousands of fans on Saturday and Sunday night on her Renaissance World Tour. Fans arrived from all over the world, causing tickets prices in Houston to be among the most expensive on the global tour. Some paid 3x more than in other cities for floor tickets. And, of course, there was no shortage of chrome cowboy style!

“Beyoncé has been a part of my life since hearing Destiny’s Child on the radio as a kid. Her artistic growth, the way she empowers my friends and her pure talent are truly a gift she has given us. I love her for her dedication to her craft, her spirit and the Beyhive! #JusticeforThique”

Daniel Bautista, 25, has his photo taken by a friend during a Beyoncé-themed pre-game party in Houston.

“Beyoncé, being a fellow Virgo like myself, really encapsulates the hard work, talent and commitment to her artistry that I fell in love with. Apart from being nothing short of pure talent, she is an amazing human being that loves and respects everyone around her and that is a characteristic that sets her apart from most A-list celebrities. Lastly, I love and adore Beyoncé because time and time again she demonstrates that she doesn’t make music, she creates art that will transcend time and cultures.”

— Daniel Bautista, 25, from Austin

Yazmeen Hicks, 31, whips around her ponytail during a Beyoncé-themed pre-game party in Houston.

Yazmeen Hicks, 31, is a restaurant hostess in Austin. She says she loves Beyoncé for her work ethic and inspiring commitment to social issues. “Her feminine boss energy is empowering.”

Trenton Rodgers, 29, laughs with friends during a Beyoncé-themed pre-game party. Rodgers traveled from New York City for Beyoncé’s Houston concert. He said, “She creates spaces for Black, Brown and Queer folks to celebrate OURSELVES. And the talent ... c’mon now!!”

Brittany Plange, 27, from Tulsa, poses for a portrait during a Beyoncé-themed pre-game party in Houston. She loves Beyoncé because she makes her believe she can accomplish anything.

Brittany Heckard, 30, is a lobbyist in Austin.

“She is a great performer. I don’t consider myself part of the hive, but I feel like everyone should see her perform. Denying her talent is kind of ridiculous.”

Fans wait in line outside of NRG Stadium.

“I love Beyoncé because she inspires me to do the most. Black women are told they have to shrink themselves to be accepted in society, but she represents the complete opposite. Be yourself at max capacity. Do the most, be extra ... Go above and beyond for yourself. Be that GIRL.” — Jada Murray, 23, from Austin.

Ken Thompson, 28, from Houston, said, “Beyoncé has been my favorite artist since childhood. She empowers me to want to always be myself!”

Reneé Rapp Teases New Album: 'Every Song Is a Snapshot of What I Was Going Through'

See latest videos, charts and news

The announcement photo may look familiar to fans, as she donned the same glittery attire on the cover of her seventh studio album. Bey also added “Renaissance World Tour” on her Instagram bio, further accenting the news. Last week, Beyonce performed a full concert for the first time in four years at a luxury resort in Dubai in front of influencers and journalists. The 19-song set included a collaboration with her oldest daughter Blue Ivy as the two performed “Brown Skin Girl,” which earned them a Grammy two years ago for best music video.

Crowned a triumphant win by music lovers, Renaissance stormed to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 last year and rattled off two Hot 100 top 10 hits, including her chart-topper “Break My Soul.” The dance-centric album also notched nine Grammy nominations, the most for any nominee for this year’s ceremony. Bey is looking to rack up more trophy wins, as she currently sits at a staggering 28 wins. Nominated for album of the year, song, and record of the year, Bey is facing some stout competition , especially in the former. The R&B juggernaut will tango against Adele, Harry Styles, Kendrick Lamar, Bad Bunny, and more for album of the year. A win in this category would serve as Beyonce’s first. The 65th Grammy Awards will occur Sunday night in Los Angeles at 8 pm EST.

Beyoncé returned to the stage for first time in four years in January

Last month, Beyoncé made her return to the stage and performed at the opening of the Atlantis The Royal hotel in Dubai. Despite the luxury experience, the singer left fans wanting more, as she did not perform any songs from "Renaissance," The Hollywood Reporter reported.

The invitation-only event marked her first concert in more than four years. She last performed at the  Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 event in 2018.

Beyoncé dominates Grammy nominations

The singer's tour announcement comes days ahead of the Grammys where Beyoncé leads the 2023 lineup with nine nominations, including best dance/electronic album ("Renaissance"), best R&B performance ("Virgo’s Groove") and best traditional R&B performance ("Plastic Off the Sofa").

With 28 wins and 88 total career nominations, Beyoncé now ties her husband, rapper Jay-Z , for the most nominations in Grammy history. If Beyoncé picks up four or more awards this year, she will surpass the late Georg Solti for the most Grammy wins of all time. (The Hungarian-born conductor holds the record with 31.)

Beyoncé called out by Monica Lewinsky: over 'Partition' lyric after ableism controversy

Beyoncé and Jay-Z have got "to be the most intense power couple in the history of music," Recording Academy president Harvey Mason Jr. Mason said after the nominations were revealed. "That’s music and Grammy royalty – that’s the royal family."

Their combined 176 nominations are "absolutely a testament to their talent, to their level of excellence, to their work ethic, to their level of greatness over a long period of time. I don’t even know what the next (leading) couple would be, but it’s not anywhere close.”

Beyoncé's 'Break My Soul.' Taylor Swift's 'Anti-Hero.'  These are the 10 best songs of 2022, ranked.

Beyoncé noticeably was not nominated in any of the music video categories for the Grammys, having not released any album visuals for "Renaissance" since its debut.

If you're debating the best seats at Beyoncé's tour, they are probably in Club Renaissance , B-Hive A, or B-Hive B. "While she does perform in Club Renaissance, she spends a lot of the more time actually on the stage," Jae Gurley told Town & Country . "So in B-Hive, you get in that little pocket right in between runway and stage. Club Renaissance is only here at the end of the runway. When she's up there on the stage, we can't really see anything."

Beyoncé's Houston concert draws fans from around the world

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- People from across the country and world are buzzing to see Beyoncé perform in her hometown this weekend.

"We're glad we have an icon here, born and raised," a Houston native said.

Beyoncé's weekend concert series could bring millions of dollars to the city economy, possibly outperforming Taylor Swift's three-day stint performing at NRG stadium, according to city leaders.

"We've been planning this since February, and when the tickets dropped, we said, we're going to go to Houston and see Beyoncé," a friend group told ABC13.

Houston First projects major artists could have an economic impact over a quarter of a billion dollars this year here in the city.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner told us these concerts are showcasing Houston's diversity, and that it's critical to help the city grow.

"All of the diversity that is exemplified in our city is also represented in Beyoncé," Turner said.

This comes after just last weekend when Drake announced Houston as his new home.

Beyoncé  and  JAY-Z have Megan Thee Stallion 's back.

During an appearance on the Club Shay Shay podcast on Monday, July 1, the "Captain Hook" rapper opened up about her relationship with the power couple — and revealed how they've helped her in her career.

At one point in the conversation, host Shannon Sharpe asked Megan, 29, about her decision to part ways with her record label and go independent. Reflecting on the move, Megan revealed the advice she was given by JAY-Z.

"When I was in the situation that I was in and I wanted to get out of it, they told me, 'You need to do this on your own. You already know what it is, you got all the tools, all the legal s--- that you're gong through right now — I know that you're learning something. So, you should be able to figure out how to get ahead and be your own boss,'" Megan recalled of the conversation.

The "HISS" rapper then revealed that Beyoncé has inspired her other business endeavors — like starting her own tequila brand.

"I used to be the cognac queen, but as much as I used to enjoy cognac and I promoted a lot of people's liquor brands, she was like, 'The next time I see you, you need to have your own alcoholic beverage,'" she said. "I feel like they definitely put me in a position to learn how to be my own boss."

Reflecting on her relationship with the couple, Megan expressed gratitude to have them as mentors in the business.

"Never did I ever think that I was going to be managed by the people that I looked up to. It just felt like a big family. They're just so intelligent. They've been through everything. They're still going through it right now, but they just know how to carry it," she said.

"And I'm learning from the best. I feel like I'm in the right spot, the right position. I've never felt so safe in a situation where I feel like these people got my back. I've just seen how much they've grown, and how much they hustle and how much they let all the talk and whatever else people say roll off their back," she continued.

In 2020, the Renaissance artist joined Megan on a remix of her hit song "Savage," which went on to win two Grammy Awards for best rap song and best rap performance .

In September, Megan joined Beyoncé on her Renaissance World Tour  in a surprise performance of "Savage Remix" for  their hometown  of Houston.

Following the performance, Megan shared a TikTok where she grew emotional as she reflected on the dream moment.

“What’s up y’all? It’s your girl Megan Thee Stallion, a.k.a, the hot girl coach! And bitch I will never shut the f--- up, because I performed with Beyoncé! Y’all don’t know how many times I have cried this weekend," she said in a voiceover. "Y’all don't understand Beyoncé is my idol. Like I really genuinely love Beyoncé with my whole heart. I got on this camo because I would go to f---ing war behind Beyoncé.”

When a Man Got Slapped in the Face for Disrespecting the 'Mute Challenge' During Beyoncé's Tour

Beyoncé 's fans take her 'mute' challenge seriously, Queen Bey had made it a point to make the live audience attending her Renaissance World Tour go silent during her song Energy . The moment she said, "Big wave in the room, the crowd gon' move / Look around, everybody on mute," the crowd would go 'dead silent' for a few seconds. As per Newsweek , the fan activity didn't happen as expected during her 25th September 2023 Houston, Texas performance, a male fan allegedly screamed during the mute session and got slapped hard for it. Since then more than 3 million people have viewed the video shared by Danny ( @beyoncegarden ) on X.

Fans gave mixed reactions to the situation, one fan stated: "When the queen says stfu you stfu." Another fan chimed : "Yes. The mute challenge is serious. It’s the one think Bey asked of us to help her out with during the entire tour and if you can’t help out then you’re not a beehive." An X user mocked : "People really scream on purpose just to get attention or a reaction, I'm glad she did what she did."

A fan reasoned : "Okay now see it’s not that deep! Yes it’s hella corny to scream but to get physical over what’s supposed to be a fun challenge is insane! You think Beyoncé really care about this that much for yall to be tussling? What if they would hit back? Yall calm down and have fun." A fan didn't agree with the situation: "Imagine thinking that you’re privileged and entitled enough to punch someone for not complying with a trend ." Another critic said: "Now if he had punched her in the face, her feelings would've been hurt. It's not that serious, Ma'am."

The devotion of Beyoncé's admirers is well-known. The actions of the fanbase dubbed the "BeyHive," served as the model for the psychological suspense series Swarm . The seven-episode series, which debuted on Amazon Prime in March 2023, stars Dominique Fishback as a music enthusiast who develops an obsession with her favorite singer and will stop at nothing to get her approval.

As per Newsweek , in 2022 when the Renaissance album dropped, artist Kelis accused Beyoncé of stealing her 2003 hit Milkshake. Kelis also called Beyoncé "stupid and disrespectful" for not taking permission before using her piece. In the first version of Energy , Beyoncé sang a rendition of the well-known "la-la, la-la, la" from Kelis' smash song during an interpolation from Milkshake . Queen Bey never commented on the issue but silently cut out the controversial part from her song after facing accusations.

However, Beyoncé's fans could not resist and attacked Kelis's Instagram posts with vengeance, they started posting insulting comments under several of her images. One of Kelis' followers defended her: "I'm starting to think the [Beyhive] is depressed just sad." The artist herself called the 'Beyhive' a cult, "It's got cult written all over it." Another Kelis fan stated, "Beyoncé fans are straight crazy… I ain't never seen folks go so hard for someone that they never even met or know personally. Mental illness is real. Just wow."

Megan Thee Stallion Tequila brand update

Having The Carters as mentors is a flex, especially when they’re giving out advice about how to become a mogul.

On Monday (July 1), Megan Thee Stallion revealed on Club Shay Shay that it was under the guidance of Beyoncé that she decided to venture into spirits and launch her own tequila brand .

“Beyoncé is actually the person that inspired me to get my own tequila,” explained the “BOA” rapper. “Because I used to be the cognac queen. I still am the cognac queen. But as much as I used to enjoy cognac, and I’ve promoted a lot of people’s liquor brands , she was like, ‘The next time I see you, you better have your own. You need to have your own alcohol.’”

“I create the things that I want to see, I don’t create things for other people to like them,” she said during the announcement per Essence . “I create the music I want to hear, I go and do my own thing and stay true to me. As long as you keep doing things that are true to you and feel good to you, you’ll get the audience you want to attract. You don’t want to be a walking commercial . You should do things that make you feel good […] you’ll create more moments that way.”

The following month, she allowed fans to preview the liquor during the Hot Girl Summer Tour before its formal launch.

A release date has yet to be confirmed.
