Best Times To Visit Athens

The best times to visit Athens are between March and May and from September to November. Weather during the spring and fall months is agreeable and sunshine is pretty much a guarantee. Not to mention, crowds are thinner and hotel and airfare deals are easier to come by than in summer. But if you choose to visit between December and February (Athens's winter season), don't fret. The winters in Athens are relatively mild (with temperatures that range from the low 40s to the mid-50s), thanks in part to the country's location along the Mediterranean. June through August, meanwhile, bring stifling heat and hordes of tourists, so sightseeing can be a bit uncomfortable and quite a headache at this time.

The best time to visit Athens: everything you need to know

The beauty of a city like  Athens is that there is  always something going on . The  grand ancient ruins and superb museums are open year-round. But depending on your budget and your goals, you might find that tailoring your trip to a certain season suits you best.

Summer is hot, hot, hot – and packed with tourists and high prices, but the incredible arts and cultural festivals explode during that season. Winter’s got rock-bottom prices and a vibrant nightlife as Athenians keep themselves entertained through the chillier months.

Spring and fall are a perfect compromise, with reasonable temps, prices and crowds. And always wonderful is Greek Orthodox Easter, where the entire country stops what they’re doing and joins the celebration.

The quiet shoulder seasons (April & May, September & October) are the best time to visit

Spring and Autumn in Athens are a gift. The mild temperatures make exploring easy, and the summer crowds have yet to arrive or have waned so that if you time your visits right, you’ll have elbow room at the famous sights. Accommodation prices can drop by 20%, and service can be better overall.

The exception is Greece’s biggest blowout holiday,  Orthodox Easter , which is preceded by a week of celebration – the date changes every year (and is sometimes in May). The whole country gets a holiday, and hotels get booked up. Reserve well in advance. One of the most impressive Good Friday candlelit processions climbs Lykavittos Hill.

Athens is beautiful in September, perfect for strolling the streets or hitting the clubs with locals returning from the islands. Though festivals have wound down, October is a great month to stay in Athens, too, as city life remains strong and the theater and opera begin. Ohi Day on October 28 commemorates the day in 1940 when Greek Prime Minister Metaxas rejected Mussolini’s ultimatum.

Budget travelers can bag a bargain from November to March

In winter, the temperatures drop, and you might even see occasional snow, but the Athens nightlife booms. Accommodation is at its lowest price for the year, so it’s a super time to travel on a budget – though keep in mind that if you plan to visit islands as well, the ferry schedules are at their most limited.

One of the least busy months of the year, November means space at the top sights and no major holiday schedule disruptions. Come December, though, and the cool sunshine gives way to bright lights during the Christmas season. Nightclubs and bouzoukia in Athens are lively, running into the wee hours.

In the new year, the highlight of February is usually Carnival, keyed to the three weeks prior to the fasting of Lent. Minor events lead up to a weekend of costume parades, feasting and dancing.

Participants lift a giant rainbow flag above the street during the annual Gay Pride parade event in central Athens.

June to August is the high season – get ready for a festival overload

While high summer can be blazing hot and accommodation costs the most, it’s also the best time to join Athens’ bountiful festival season and booming  beach club scene . In August, Athenians leave for the islands, and some restaurants, galleries and bars close — but the upside is that the city traffic is calmer.

For festival-goers, June sizzles in Athens. Top national and international performers fill stages with dance, music and drama, and many of the festivals continue all summer, like the Athens Epidaurus Festival. Temperatures continue to soar, and outdoor cinemas and sprawling beach clubs thrive in July.

Come August, when Athenians leave for the islands, expect to do less but relax more. If you’re traveling mid-month, reserve well ahead as Greeks take to the roads and boats for the Feast of Assumption on August 15.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Athens Greece

Visitors often ask when is the best time to go to Athens. While the vibrant Greek capital is a year-round destination, some months are better than others. Read on to find out more!

Best time to go to Athens Greece

Best time of the year in Athens Greece

Athens in Greece is where I live. It’s a lively, multi-cultural city, with lots of tourist attractions and plenty of interesting neighbourhoods, like Plaka , Anafiotika or Psirri .

Our city never sleeps! Daily life starts pretty early, and nightlife goes on until the wee hours of the morning.

Best time to visit Athens Greece - The Acropolis

Any time is a great time to visit Athens! With that said, the weather varies a lot throughout the year. During the summer months, temperatures can be unbearably hot. In winter, we have rain, wind, and maybe even snow.

It’s also worth taking into account the numerous festivals, key events and seasonal celebrations happening in our city. In fact, some visitors plan their trip around them.

In this article, I will break down the weather in Athens by season, and also give you an overview of the most important events in the city. This will help you plan your visit, and enjoy your time more!

Athens weather in summer: June, July and August

The period June – August is high season in Athens and Greece. This is when most tourists visit, and often combine Athens with one or more of the Greek islands.

During the peak season, average high temperatures in Athens during the day are usually around 30-35 C (85-95 F). Sometimes, you may get extremely warm weather – over 40C (104F)!

People visiting Athens in summer are very unlikely to see any rain. August 2022 was unusually rainy, with three consecutive days of storms!

Best time to go to Athens - Lycabettus Hill

With that in mind, you might prefer to avoid visiting Athens in July and August, which are the two warmest months. Most people feel uncomfortable with our blazing hot temperatures. Early June is a much better choice overall, plus it has very long daylight hours.

If you can only visit Athens in summer, have a look at my  tips for staying cool in the summer in Athens .

Athens weather in autumn: September, October and November

Autumn is an interesting time of year to visit Athens. The summer crowds are mostly gone, but the weather is still nice and sunny.

Average temperatures in September are around 25C (77F) during the day, so sightseeing is very pleasant. This is also one of the best months to extend your trip and visit a few of the Greek islands, as the average sea temperature is at its warmest.

Guards in front of the Greek Parliament

October and November are colder, and you will generally need something more than T shirts and a light jacket. While some days can be nice and sunny, expect some cloudy days and rain.

Athens weather in winter: December, January and February

The winter months are the low season for Athens. Compared to other European capitals, winters in Athens are mild. The average day temperature is generally between 5-15 C (40-60 F), and it drops during the evening.

You will typically get a few rainy days, and sometimes thunderstorms. Try to avoid getting caught out on the streets then. Our drainage systems are not the greatest, so you will end up trying to run around while avoiding water puddles.

Snow is rare, but it’s possible – in fact, during heavy snowstorms, everything in Athens stops running.

This is me in February 2021 – January 2022 was even whiter!

Interestingly, January usually has a few beautiful, sunny days, which are called the halcyon days. With global warming though, you can never be sure!

Athens weather in spring: March, April and May

Generally speaking, late spring is a lovely time of the year to visit Athens. While March can be fairly unpredictable in terms of weather, April and May are mostly warm and dry, with pleasant temperatures.

The average daily temperature in May is around 20–25 C (68–77 F), and we have long daylight hours, making one of the best months to visit Athens. Many Athenians head out to the beaches – myself included!

Summer is the best time to go to the beaches near Athens

Bonus: the hills around the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora are blooming with flowers, and there are far fewer tourists than in summer.

The best time to go to Athens for the ancient sites

Athens has seven ancient sites , which are all open-air. Unlike the Ancient Akrotiri in  Santorini  which is fully covered, you will be exposed to the elements.

Visiting the archaeological spaces on a hot summer day can be exhausting for some people, especially anyone with health issues, seniors and toddlers. It’s best to see the ancient sites either first thing in the morning, or in the evening, when it’s cooler.

Roman Agora Athens

Similarly, wandering around the sites on a rainy winter day can be unpleasant, or even dangerous. The Acropolis marbles in particular can get quite slippery.

The best time to visit the ancient monuments in Athens is actually spring or autumn, when the temperatures are more pleasant and there are fewer people visiting.

Note:  From November to March, entry fees to the ancient sites are reduced to half price, and the sites have shorter opening hours.

The best time to visit Athens for museums

If you are mostly interested in visiting the numerous  museums in Athens , the best time to go to Athens is probably the off season. Apart from school visits, the museums are much quieter than in summer.

The national archaeological museum in Athens

With that said, the two museums likely to be more crowded in summer, are the Acropolis Museum and certain rooms in the National Archaeological Museum. Most of the other museums are relatively quiet.

Note: From November to March, the public museums in Athens have a reduced entry fee, and operate at limited hours.

The best time to go to Athens Greece for celebrations and festivals

There is always something happening in Athens. It could be a religious and traditional festival, or a special music, theatre or cultural event.

Some of the most important happenings in Athens are

  • February / March:  the Carnival and Clean Monday
  • 25 March: Independence Day
  • Mid April / Early May:  Greek Orthodox Easter
  • May:  Jazz festival
  • Summer:  Several festivals, including the Athens and Epidaurus festival
  • 28 October: Oxi Day
  • November:  Athens Marathon
  • December:  Christmas season

Let’s break down all the key events, month by month.

Athens in January – A quiet month

Overall, January in Athens is a quiet month. Due to the grim weather, there are few tourists around. On the positive side, it’s a great time of the year to visit in terms of crowds and accommodation prices.

New Year’s   Day is a public holiday. If you like wandering around quiet cities, you will love it.

On the 6th January, the  Epiphany is celebrated at coastal areas around Athens, like Piraeus. A priest throws a cross in the sea, and several men – and sometimes women – compete to retrieve it.

Epiphany celebrations in Greece

This event symbolizes the Baptism of Christ by St John the Baptist. A bit chilly, if you ask me!

Here is an article with some of  the best things to do in Greece in January .

Athens in February – The Carnival

Along with January, February is the rainiest and coldest month in Athens. It’s also the beginning of the  Carnival season  all around Greece. The carnival period begins ten Sundays before Orthodox Easter Sunday, and lasts for three weeks.

Carnival celebrations in Athens - Vanessa as a witch

The carnival in Greece is like any other carnival in the world. People dress up, parades happen and there’s lots of confetti all around.

While you will see celebrations in Athens, the best places in Greece for the carnival are Patras, in the Peloponnese, and Xanthi, in northern Greece.

Right in the middle of the carnival period, we celebrate  Tsiknopempti . This could be roughly translated as Grilled Meat Thursday. The concept is simple – people get together to eat meat!

Greek souvlaki

This day is often an unofficial half-day off. You will see large groups of Athenians sitting around restaurants and having  souvlaki ,  gyros , and other popular types of grilled meat dishes.

Athens in March – Clean Monday and Independence Day

Usually, the last few days of the carnival fall in early March, and are followed by Clean Monday . This is the beginning of the Lent period, and it’s seven weeks before Easter Sunday.

Best time to visit Athens - Kite flying in March

According to the  Greek Orthodox Religion , Lent is a time to fast. On Clean Monday, Athenians celebrate by flying kites and feasting on a selection of specially cooked fasting dishes.

The  Athens food market  remains open throughout the night before Clean Monday, and it’s actually packed! Most restaurants will have a special menu, and this is a great time to taste dishes like  taramosalata ,  fava ,  dolmadakia , octopus and calamari.

Fasting in Greece - Dolmadakia

Another special day is the  Independence Day , on the 25th March. This is when we celebrate the 1821 Revolution against the Ottoman Empire, after which modern Greece was established.

There are many parades throughout the city, and the biggest one is at  Syntagma Square , right in front of the Parliament. Many of the tourist attractions are closed due to the national holiday, but you can benefit from free entrance to the Acropolis Museum.

Athens in April – Experience Greek Easter

Visiting Athens in April can be a very rewarding cultural experience. This is because the  Greek Orthodox Easter  is usually in April – though on some years it can be in early May. It is normally on different dates than the Catholic or Protestant Easter.

Read Easter eggs for Greek Easter

Greeks celebrate Easter in very unique ways. If you are interested in a true local experience, visit Athens during Easter week, and follow the candlelit processions and other Greek Easter traditions .

Note that the sites and museums will have irregular opening hours on Good Friday and Good Saturday, and will be closed on Easter Sunday.

Also, if you are visiting Athens on the  18th April , take advantage from the free entrance to sites and museums, due to the  World Heritage Day .

Athens in May – Beware of the Labour Day strikes in Greece

If someone asked me what is the best month to visit Athens, I would vote for May. In my opinion, spring is the best time of year here, as we get good weather, relatively few visitors, and tons of flowers.

Note that the  1st of May , or International Workers Day, is a public holiday / strike day in Greece . Do not plan on travelling, especially by ferry, as your journey is likely to be cancelled.

All sites and museums are closed, so you can take a day off sightseeing. Here are a few ideas about what to do in Athens on May Day .

A guide to the national gardens in Athens

If you happen to be in Athens on the 18th May, you are lucky. All museums and archaeological sites are free to enter due to the  International Museums Day . Start your day early, and visit as many as you can!

Best time to go to Athens - Technopolis Jazz Festival

Finally, if you are in Athens towards the end of May, check out the week-long  Athens Technopolis Jazz Festival . The festival has free entrance and it’s a great way to spend one or more of your evenings, along with many locals.

Athens in June – Festivals in Athens Greece

June is one of the best months to visit Athens, as there are several festivals and cultural events. Arguably the most significant event is the  Athens and Epidaurus Festival , which continues until September / October.

Summer in Athens - Herodion theatre

Tickets go on sale a few weeks or months before each performance, and you can check out the schedule on the  official website . Performances take place at various stages in Athens and Epidaurus.

If you are in Athens, try to see a performance in the ancient Herodion theatre, right underneath the Acropolis. It’s one of the best reasons to visit Athens !

A special day in June is Holy Spirit Day,  Agiou Pnevmatos . This always falls on the Monday six weeks after Easter, marking the first long weekend of the summer.

If you are catching a ferry back to Athens from the islands on that weekend, book your ferry tickets in advance ! Many Athenians will have escaped the city, and some ferries may be sold out.

Overall, June is a fantastic time to visit one of the islands close to Athens . Accommodation prices are lower than in peak season, and there is an overall more relaxed atmosphere.

Athens in July – Festivals, crowds and extreme temperatures

July is high season in Athens, and many tourists visit from all around the world. Be prepared for crowds at the ancient monuments.

Best time to visit Athens - Summer music festivals

At the same time, July is a fantastic month for events in Athens. The Athens and Epidaurus Festival continues, alongside several  music festivals in Athens , like the  Rockwave Festival , the  Ejekt Festival  and the  Release Festival .

Additionally, some of the Athens museums host various gigs and other events out on their gardens. Check out what’s on at the Athens Concert Hall (Megaro Mousikis) , the Numismatic Museum and the Byzantine and Christian Museum.

Athens in August – Athenians go on holiday

August is an interesting time to be in Athens. Several smaller businesses close, as many locals take a much needed break to go on vacation. The tourist attractions, bigger chain stores, shops and many restaurants are open as normal.

Naxos island in Greece

There are few key events in Athens in August, as most of the festivals happen on the islands. On the August full moon night, some museums organize special celebrations for the  August moon festival . As an example, the Acropolis museum typically remains open until midnight.

Another important day in August is  Assumption day , 15th of August. This is one of the most important religious days in Greece, and an excuse for a day off. The city empties on that day!

Street art in Plaka, Athens

August is a great month if you want to experience the  traditional Greek fiestas  called  panigiria . While some of the best  panigiria  in Greece are on islands like Crete and Ikaria, Athens is home to a few of them.

The most easily accessible  panigiria  in Athens in August are near the church of Faneromeni (Cholargos metro station, 22-23 August) and near the church of Agios Ioannis (Agios Ioannis metro station, 28-29 August). Expect several busy market stalls, street food, traditional music and an overall merry atmosphere.

Athens in September – Back to school

September is one of my favourite months in Athens and Greece. While the tourist season extends well into September, there are fewer crowds than in July and August.

Best season to visit Athens - The National Library

September welcomes numerous performances in Herodion theatre, plus many other Athens experiences and events. As an example, look out for the popular Athens International Film Festival .

On the last weekend of September, take advantage of the  European Heritage Days.  You can visit all the archaeological sites and many of the museums for free.

Best time to go to Athens - The Acropolis museum

For anyone living in Athens, September is a month when many gyms, yoga schools and other similar places offer free trial days. Ask around!

Athens in October – The beginning of the off-season

October, especially the first half of the month, is a fantastic time to take a trip to Athens. Flight prices are usually much lower than on other months, and the summer crowds are gone.

A special day in October in Athens is the  28th October , when we celebrate the  OXI day , or Ohi Day. This is the day that Greece’s Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas declined Benito Mussolini’s request to allow Italian military forces in Greece, in 1940.

The word “OXI” is pronounced “Ohi”, and means “No” in Greek. There are parades in the city, and entrance to the ancient sites and public museums is free.

Little Kook cafe Psyrri in Athens - Best month to visit Athens

While Halloween is not part of the Greek tradition, you will find some celebrations. Swing by the  Little Kook  cafe in Psiri to have a trick-or-treat, or just to take photos of the decorations.

Athens in November – The Athens Marathon

Few people choose to visit Athens in November. However, some visitors book their flights and accommodation well in advance. This is because they participate in the  Athens Classic Marathon .

People running the authentic Athens Marathon - Best time to visit Athens Greece

This event takes place on an annual basis, on the second Sunday of November. In 2019, over 60,000 entries had been submitted for the various races. There was some rain on the day, but people made it nevertheless!

If you are  travelling to the Athens airport  on that day, it’s best to take the metro. If you are planning to use a taxi, leave your hotel earlier than planned, as traffic regulations will affect your route.

Another date you should watch out for is the  17th November . From 1967 until 1974 Greece was under a military regime, and on the 17th November 1973 the Polytechnic Uprising took place. In memory of the uprising, people march towards the US Embassy.

A demonstration in Athens - Best month to visit Athens

The demonstration normally starts peacefully, but usually ends up in riots and clashes with the police. You might prefer to avoid certain areas of the centre, from Omonoia metro to Megaro Moussikis metro.

Some metro stations in central Athens will be closed from the afternoon onwards, so plan your itinerary accordingly. Here is everything you need to know about the 17 November protests in Athens .

Read more here: Athens in November .

Athens in December – Christmas time

The most important event in December is Christmas . While Athens doesn’t have the glitz of other European cities, it is ideal if you want to escape the cold Northern European weather.

Best time to go to Athens Greece - Christmas tree

The period leading to Christmas and New Year’s is pretty festive, with many events taking place around the city. You will find some Christmas markets in the center, though they are not as big or special as in Central European countries.

Athens is generally very quiet on  Christmas Day , as most people spend time with family and friends. Our celebrations are a lot less picturesque than our Easter customs. They normally involve lots of food, and many late nights during that week.

Celebrate Christmas in Athens

On New Year’s Eve , there are always events on Apostolou Pavlou street, close to the Acropolis, and around Syntagma Square. Some of the best known Greek musicians are usually invited to participate.

Here is some more information about Christmas in Athens and Greece .

Another important day to watch out for is the  6th December . In 2008, the 15-year-old  Alexandros Grigoropoulos  was shot by a policeman in the Exarchia area, and died. In memory of this sad incident, there are always riots and demonstrations in the areas close to Omonoia and Panepistimio metro.

Conclusion – When is the best time to visit Athens Greece?

The best time to visit Athens is the shoulder season. April to mid June  and  September to mid October  are the best months to visit Athens in Greece.

This is the time of year when you will get pleasant weather, without the uncomfortably high summer temperatures or winter storms. Moreover, you won’t find as many tourist crowds as in the peak summer months.

However, if you want to fully experience the notorious nightlife, festivals and international atmosphere, and then go to a few islands, summer is also a great time to go to Athens. Just be prepared for the hot weather!

Very useful information. A friend and I are planning a trip for October for many of the reasons you have outlined. What sort of restrictions/precautions are in place concerning the Covid pandemic? Are there any free walking tours at the end of which the tour guide is tipped? I experienced this in Barcelona – wonderful way to see the city with a local person. Bicycle tours?

Hello! At the moment, there are very few Covid-related restrictions (e.g. you still need to wear a mask in hospitals, urban transportation and ferries), but things may well change by October. Feel free to contact me again a couple of weeks before your trip. You can google search for free walking tours (I have no personal opinion!), as for bicycle tours I know this one which I’ve actually taken and it’s a lot of fun – and I’m not a cyclist at all! You can see my impressions here .

Despite its reputation as an exclusive summertime destination, Athens has been lately evolving into a popular year-round destination. Which, in turn, will inevitably beg the question: when is the best time to visit Athens? To be completely candid, there is no clear answer to this question.

Ultimately, it all depends on what kind of vacation you are after and your interests. Bustling with life all year round, Athens is a great destination whether you’re looking for a short city break in the winter or a place to spend your summer vacation.

This roundup of what you should expect to find in the Greek capital each month of the year will help you decide the best time to visit Athens.

Visit Athens in January – February

While Greece is popular for its sun-soaked islands with endless sandy beaches, the Mediterranean country experiences winter, too.

In fact, in some places in Northern Greece, it even snows and temperatures drop below zero. Luckily, that isn’t the case in Athens.

During January and February, temperatures in Athens range from 10°C to 0°C, with low to no chances of snowing. A good pair of shoes, a jacket and an umbrella for those few raindrops are all you need to pack in your suitcase.

February usually marks the beginning of the Greek carnival (Apokries) which lasts for around three weeks and ends on “Clean Monday”, (Ash Monday).

Parties, parades, and festivities occur around the city during the carnival, but the biggest celebration is held on the final weekend.

A Trip to Athens in May – June

While May is spring, it starts feeling like summer in Athens. With temperatures reaching up to 25°C, locals and tourists head to the seaside areas, also known as the Athenian Riviera, and some even dare to take the first dip of the year.

Outdoor tables pop up in some of the capital’s hip neighborhoods, breathing new life into the city.

If you’re in Athens on the 1st of May, grab the chance to explore the city’s outdoor places and make a May Day wreath as the tradition requires.

On the other hand, if you’re visiting Athens in June, be prepared to get a taste of the Greek summer.

Temperatures are higher than in May but don’t soar above 30°C as in July and August. June’s weather is ideal for all-day sightseeing and relaxed evening walks around the historic center.

A trip to Athens in May - June

Summer’s first month also marks the beginning of the summer festival season which lasts until the end of July. The city’s cultural agenda is filled with various events, including numerous outdoor concerts.

Little known fact: Athens is actually home to tens of exciting festivals. Be it music, culture, arts, or just plain entertainment, you are sure to find a festival to suit your tastes .

Visit Athens in July – August

July and August are the hottest months in Greece and therefore most locals and tourists decide to hit one of the numerous majestic Greek islands like Mykonos, ( check here how to get there from Athens ) or Santorini ( best ways to travel from Athens to Santorini ).

A fact that makes many travelers wonder whether the two last months of the summer is a good time to visit Athens.

Well, it all depends on what you’re looking for during your trip. The first and most important is that in August most Athenians leave the city for the islands. Especially during the last half of the month, Athens feels quite empty and many bars, cafés, and restaurants are closed.

If the capital’s nightlife isn’t on your list with the reasons to visit Athens, then you’ll probably like Athens city in August. You’ll still find many places for a quick bite, a mouthwatering dinner, or an ice-chilled cocktail.

The other thing you must consider before booking your flight tickets for August is the temperature.

Visit Athens in July - August

The Greek summer might have gained a great reputation, making millions of tourists flock to the country every summer, but it isn’t all that pleasant in the city center. With the thermometer often showing 40°C and above, sightseeing in Athens can become really hard. The same goes for the last half of July. However, in July the city is still quite vibrant as most locals go only on short weekend getaways.  And here’s the best part: Athens makes it ideal for some astonishing day trips to places you’d never thought you could reach for the city.

September is also a great month to catch one of the cultural events at the historic Odeon of Herodes Atticus . The summery mood still lingers in the air as most people have just returned from their vacation and a not very negligible number of tourists still roam around the city.

Travel to Athens in September - October

Life in Athens will officially get back to pace in October. And even though we’re in the heart of autumn, temperatures are still quite high, with an average of 20°C in the daytime.

While in November, it gets cooler compared to September and October, it is still much warmer than in other European countries. Sunny days alternate with rainy weather this time of the year, but the temperature goes up to 15°C.

Unlike northern European cities, Athens doesn’t boast huge Christmas markets and snowy landscapes, but you’ll find many events that will put you in a festive mood.

Take a stroll around Syntagma square , or visit Ermou, the city’s pedestrianized shopping street and taste the local Christmas delicacies served in the numerous stalls, attend a theatrical play at Badminton Theater, or a performance at Megaron (Athens Concert Hall).

Best Time to Visit Athens: Month-by-Month Guide

By Alex Schultz · Last updated on April 3, 2024

While it is most known for its ancient ruins and archaeological sites, Greece’s capital Athens is also a modern, sprawling metropolis. A very vibrant place, its packed schedule of cultural events and pounding nightlife scene means there’s something to enjoy whenever you go.

Having said that, the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn are arguably the best times to visit. As well as avoiding the huge crowds, heat waves and high prices of summer, you can take boat trips to the gorgeous Greek Islands without jostling for space aboard.

While winter is the low season, moderate temperatures and the cheaper prices mean you can still have a nice time away. With so much to see and do, Athens is a great year-round destination.

What’s the Weather Like in Athens?

Lying just inland from the Aegean Sea, Athens is built across a number of hills in the Attica Basin. Surrounded on three sides by massive mountains, it has a hot Mediterranean climate with scorching summers and mild winters.

Averages of around 31 and 32°C (88 to 89°F) in July and August are also accompanied by dry weather and bright, sunny skies. Besides being a bit wetter and cooler, wintertime also sees less sunshine and fewer hours of daylight.

Due to its setting and the fact it acts as an urban heat island, Athens often has quite bad air pollution. Its constant traffic and increasingly frequent forest fires in summer also don’t help unfortunately.

Best months to visit Athens

Best Time to Visit Athens

As temperatures of around 15 to 24°C (59 to 75°F) are more manageable, both spring and late autumn are usually considered the most comfortable months to visit. You then avoid the summers’ long, hot, dry days but still enjoy plenty of sunshine and clear blue skies. Prices are also cheaper and there are fewer crowds at all its attractions.

With temperatures regularly reaching the mid-to-high 30s (95 to 100°F), July and August can almost be unbearable in Athens. Despite the heat and humidity, these are among the most popular months to visit Athens as people have holidays. Numerous festivals are also held with many taking trips to nearby beaches, islands and archaeological sites.

Athens in January

Athens Museum

After the Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations, January is quite quiet in Athens. Aside from being the coldest month of the year, the weather is rather unpredictable with sun, rain and sometimes even snow appearing on the same day! If you’re very lucky, you’ll get to see the Acropolis magically covered in a thin layer of snowfall.

While its festive lights and Christmas Factory are up until the 6th, after this there is not all that much going on around the city. Although you lose a bit of its special ambience, you can visit its main attractions and museums without any queues. You can also pick up some great deals for hotels and flights.

Athens in February

Athens in February

Very similar weatherwise to January, February is also quite cold and wet with temperatures averaging 13°C (55°F). If you wrap up warm though and pack an umbrella, you can amble about all its archaeological sites with barely anyone else around.

Flight prices and hotel rates are again much cheaper as most people wait to visit when the weather is warmer. Athens also has exciting events such as its Dance Festival to attend with three weeks of street parades, parties and concerts taking place for the Apokries Carnival.

Athens in March

Independence Day

Depending on the year, these fun festivities in the run-up to Lent may carry on into March with other huge events including its FoodExpo and Independence Day celebrations. At these, you can either try thousands of tasty local food products or watch a grand military parade commemorating the country’s founding. Although it is still the off-season, averages of 15°C (59°F) entice more people back to the capital.

With 6 hours of sunshine and 12 of daylight a day, you can spend a lot more time outdoors, wandering about. As all the hotels and archaeological sites still receive relatively few visitors, prices are cheaper and places are less crowded. Its spring flowers also look very picturesque in its parks or on the mountainsides.

Athens in April

Athens Springs

April is really when tourism takes off again in Athens. The longer, sunny, dry days are ideal for strolling about sightseeing before the summer crowds arrive. Average temperatures rise to 19°C (66°F) with cheery poppies and daisies blooming throughout the city.

Flight and hotel prices do increase though around Easter – a very important religious holiday in Greece. More regular ferries also depart for Santorini, Mykonos and Naxos if you want to visit some of its idyllic isles before they are overrun later in the year. With very few overcast days, April is one of the best months to visit Athens.

Athens in May

Athens in May

With temperatures hitting 24°C (75°F) and all kinds of interesting events taking place, May is arguably an even better month to explore Athens. A lovely, lively summer-like feel reigns over everywhere as people spend more time outside due to the dry, sunny days.

Not yet as expensive or crowded as summer, it has fantastic food and jazz festivals to enjoy as well as the month-long Athens City Festival. Celebrating spring, this sees lots of concerts, art exhibitions and sporting events held around town. May is also a good month to take day trips to nearby sites like Ancient Corinth and Epidaurus before they get too busy.

Athens in June

Athens in June

While averages of 29°C (84°F) can already get a bit much, June is the beginning of the peak season in Athens. As people pour in, prices go up with many hotels and restaurants being packed out. The Acropolis and its ancient Agora also start to get very full during this month.

With 15 hours of daylight though – the most of the year – you should have plenty of time to explore the center and enjoy sitting at its outdoor cafes. Besides sunbathing and swimming in the sea, you can also take ferries to visit some of its nearby isles. The almost three month-long Epidaurus Festival also has hundreds of dance, music and theater productions to attend, many held in the capital’s ancient theaters. Alternatively, you listen to big live acts at the Release music festival or DJ sets at Colour Day.

Athens in July

Athens in July

Along with August, July is by far the hottest month in Athens when temperatures average a scorching 32°C (89°F). With heatwaves increasingly common, particularly hot, dry summers can make sightseeing rather sticky and unpleasant. Some local shops and restaurants close for the holidays.

Despite the heat, vast crowds descend upon the city to see its sites or cool off at the nearby beaches. July also sees a number of huge events like the Rockwave and Ejekt festivals take place with rock music lovers arriving for both from all around Greece and further afield. To keep cool, you’ll want to wear light clothing, hydrate often and avoid strolling about during the hottest hours of the day.

Athens in August

Athens Crowds

As many people have holidays, August is the most expensive month to visit in terms of both flight and hotel prices. While the heat, humidity and large crowds can be off-putting, there is a very vibrant feel to its old streets and modern squares. Long queues do form though at its main tourist attractions.

Around the 15th, the city suddenly feels quite empty as many locals head off on holiday. You can still enjoy great shows and concerts though at the on-going Epidaurus Festival. When the moon is at its brightest, you can also visit its archaeological sites late at night for the August Full Moon Festival. Nearby beaches will be at their busiest, however, as Greeks relax at the coast and avoid the worst of the crowds in the capital.

Athens in September

Athens Shopping

Slightly cooler and cheaper, September is another of the best months to visit Athens. Once the school holidays are over, crowds drop considerably and a wonderful relaxed feel replaces the excited buzz of the summer months.

Although still hot, averages of 28°C (82°F) are much more pleasant for ambling around the center. Plaka’s cute cafes and artsy boutique shops will also be a lot less busy. The same is true for the ferries running from Piraeus. In addition to perusing Art Athina’s contemporary installations, you can watch thought-provoking movies at its International Film Festival.

Athens in October

Athens Rainy Day

Screenings are held into October when the prices and crowds continue to fall further. Still a very popular month to visit, it sees temperatures average 22°C (71°F) and a bit more rain starts to fall again towards the end of it. It’s well worth packing a light jacket as the evenings can get a bit nippy.

With fewer people around, this is a great time to hit up its archaeological sights and islands where you can benefit from some fantastic deals. Bear in mind though that ferries may run less frequently depending on the route. Both sunbathing and swimming are less comfortable as the weather is a bit more unpredictable.

Athens in November

Athens in November

November sees a drastic drop in tourist numbers as temperatures fall to 18°C (64°F), and there is much less sunshine and more rainfall. As wintertime opening hours apply, some museums and archaeological sites may close a bit earlier. The good news though is that prices are way cheaper and there are almost no crowds wherever you go.

As this is the off-season, ferries run less frequently and many businesses on the islands shut for the winter. While you can pick up some good deals, they do lose their allure a bit due to the shorter, drearier days. Aside from running the Athens Marathon, you can always explore the Acropolis and Agora without almost anyone around.

Athens in December

Athens Christmas

With it raining 10 days on average and temperatures dropping to 14°C (57°F), December is one of the quietest months in the capital. While there are some decorations strung up and the Christmas Factory to stop by, there isn’t quite the same ambience as in other European cities during winter.

If you want to escape the worst of the cold weather though, its mild temperatures, low hotel prices and laidback feel can make for a nice getaway. Besides celebrating Christmas and New Year’s here, there is also AthensCon to attend at the start of the month. Here you can buy games and collectibles or dress up as your favourite anime character! If you layer up and take an umbrella with you, strolling about its deserted archaeological sites alone can be quite atmospheric.

If visiting from June to September the Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel on the Athens Riviera is a wonderful choice. In spring, fall, and winter the Grande Bretagne in central Athens is best. Both are great places to stay and on our list of best hotels in Athens .

When is the Best Time to Visit Athens? My favorite time to visit Athens is during the shoulder seasons of late April to early June and late September to early November. During these months, the weather is typically warm and sunny, with fewer crowds than during the peak summer months of July and August. First-time visitors to Athens who are most concerned about outdoor sightseeing in comfortable weather will find these months the best. The shoulder seasons offer comfortable temperatures for exploring the city’s historical sites, such as the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Ancient Agora. Me and my son eating dinner on an outdoor patio in Athens during an April visit. In the shoulder seasons, you can expect mild temperatures, ranging from 60°F (15°C) to 80°F (27°C), and a lower likelihood of rain compared to the winter months. The weather is ideal for walking around the city, enjoying outdoor cafes, and visiting the many archaeological sites and museums. While I find the summer months of mid-June to mid-September to be very hot, they do offer the most sunshine and driest weather. That said, for most visitors the summer heat makes sightseeing less comfortable, and tourist sites can be very crowded. If you prefer a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere, consider visiting Athens during the off-season, from November to March. The weather is cooler and more unpredictable, with a higher chance of rain, but you’ll experience fewer tourists, lower prices, and a more authentic experience of the city. Athens January Weather: Cool, rainy, occasional sun. Sunshine/Rain: 120 hrs/57 mm Athens February Weather: Cool, damp, some sunny days. Sunshine/Rain: 120 hrs/47 mm Athens March Weather: Mild, less rain, more sun. Sunshine/Rain: 180 hrs/41 mm Athens April Weather: Warmer, occasional showers, sunny. Sunshine/Rain: 210 hrs/29 mm Athens May Weather: Warm, mostly sunny, little rain. Sunshine/Rain: 300 hrs/19 mm Athens June Weather: Hot, sunny, minimal rain. Sunshine/Rain: 360 hrs/10 mm Athens July Weather: Very hot, sunny, dry. Sunshine/Rain: 390 hrs/5 mm Athens August Weather: Extremely hot, sunny, dry. Sunshine/Rain: 360 hrs/6 mm Athens September Weather: Hot, sunny, little rain. Sunshine/Rain: 270 hrs/13 mm Athens October Weather: Warm, more rain, mostly sunny. Sunshine/Rain: 210 hrs/45 mm Athens November Weather: Mild, rainy, less sun. Sunshine/Rain: 155 hrs/58 mm Athens December Weather: Cool, damp, occasional sun. Sunshine/Rain: 120 hrs/65 mm The Acropolis of Athens at sunset. The best times to visit the Acropolis are late spring and early fall. If visiting Athens in summer, the best time of day is early morning or early evening (two hours before closing). When I Recommend Visiting Athens Best Time to Visit Athens for Good Weather : Athens is blazing hot (and busy) in July and August, when afternoon temperatures can rise to 40°C. A better plan for warm pleasant weather is to visit between mid-April and late June or early September through late-October when temperatures typically hover between 20°C and 25°C. March and November also have good sightseeing weather but be prepared for cool nights and some rain. (Some years Athens even gets snow in the winter.) Best Time for Sightseeing : The best time for sightseeing in Athens is when the weather is mild and there are smaller lines and fewer tourists: April through about mid-May, or October and into early November are the best times to visit the top attractions in Athens . Best Time to Visit the Acropolis : The best time to visit the Acropolis is in the early morning hours, especially in the summer months when it gets unbearably hot by late morning and early afternoon. As Athens is a major stop on Mediterranean cruise routes, tour buses will be pulling up at 8 a.m. when it opens, so you’ll need to be there and be ready to enter the minute the doors open to stay ahead of the crowds. The next best time is near the end of the day, about two hours before closing. It’s best to buy Acropolis tickets online . In terms of what months are best for visiting the Acropolis, I recommend April, early May, October, and early November when crowds are smaller but weather still enjoyable. Best Time for Beaches : Greater Athens has the longest coastline of any European capital, with 16 Blue Flag beaches. The best time to visit to experience them is from June through September. September is especially nice when the big crowds have gone but the water is a comfortable 24°C, having had all summer to warm up. Best Time to Experience Authentic Greek Celebrations : Easter is the most important celebration on the Greek calendar, with Greeks celebrating an entire seven days over Holy Week. This is a great time to visit for those looking for a local experience, with the chance to enjoy candlelit processions, fireworks, and sumptuous feasts. Note: Greek Easter usually falls on different dates than Easter in US, Canada, Australia, and Western Europe. Athens Travel Seasons High Season (Mid-June through Mid-September) : Summer in Athens is the high season, a good time to visit if you’re hoping to experience heat and a hopping nightlife. There will be an especially lively atmosphere with lots of tourists in the streets. Summer also sees the highest hotel and airfare rates. In August, many locals, including shop owners and restauranteurs, go on vacation to the mountains or beaches, which means some businesses will be closed. Shoulder Season (April through Mid-June, Mid-September through October) : Shoulder season is the time most feel is the very best for visiting Athens. From April through the end of spring and again in early fall, the weather is often pleasant with high temperatures ranging in the low to mid-20s. This is also when there are better deals for accommodation and flights, and most shops, attractions, and restaurants will be open. Low Season (November through March) : The low season is from late autumn through winter. While this time of year brings more grey days and rain, snow is rare in the city with low temperatures usually well above freezing. There’s plenty of room for sightseeing (crowds are thin and lineups rare) and discounts on both hotels and airfare are usually readily available. The downside is that Greek ferries won’t be running on a full schedule. Athens Events and Festivals Athens in January New Year’s Day/Saint Basil’s Day – A national Greek holiday, January 1st celebrates both the New Year and Saint Basil’s Day. From the historic landmarks and magnificent museums in central Athens to incredible cuisine and a vibrant nightlife scene in hidden gems along the way, there’s no shortage of fun things to do in the Greek capital. Is visiting Athens a part of your travel bucket list? If so, one of the main things you have to consider is the time of your visit. During your stay, you want to be able to maximize your time without having to worry about what the weather will be like or what events are taking place at the time.

Depending on your preferences and your budget, you might find that tailoring your Athens trip to a specific season is the best option. Each season has its own pros and cons when in the city; for instance, there is a range of cultural festivals being held during the summer, while winter is best for indoor activities such as museum hopping and drinking in bars or clubs.

Regardless of when you visit, you’ll find that there are plenty of activities to keep you occupied. For a hassle-free and fun experience, find a place where you can leave your bags . Bounce has luggage services to keep your belongings safe while you enjoy the summer solstice, Saint Basil's Day in January or anything exciting all year long!

Summer in Athens: June - August

The summer season in Athens, which takes place from June to August, is considered the peak season and arguably the best time to visit the Greek capital. Just like in most places, summer weather in Athens can get really warm, with an average of 84 degrees F (29 degrees C), and can even go up to a max temperature of 113 degrees F (45 degrees C). Precipitation is also very rare throughout the entire season.

June is an extremely popular time to visit Athens because of the range of festivals held during this month. Additionally, this time of the year offers all-around good weather, averaging 79 degrees F (26 degrees C). It is not so humid that you will feel hot and irritated, which makes for the perfect climate for outdoor events. Some of the key events to watch out for in June include the Athens Epidaurus Festival, the Athens Open Air Film Festival, Rockwave Festival, Art Athina , Ejekt Festival, Megaron Concert Hall Garden Series, and the Release Festival .

During the month of July, the temperature starts to get warmer and establishments such as beach clubs and outdoor cinemas start to pick up. Most bars, cafés and clubs also have their rooftops and courtyards ready to welcome the influx of tourists and locals during this time of the year. Summer events such as the Plissken Festival, Delphic Cultural Heritage Days, and Summer Nostos Festival all take place during this month.

However, by the time August comes, the city starts to empty as locals take advantage of the blazing hot weather and head out to the beaches on the Greek islands. Athens is just full of tourists during this month and a lot of the businesses are closed. This doesn’t mean that there is nothing to do in August; some summer festivals are still held during this time, such as the August Moon Festival and the Feast of the Assumption. Most tourists opt to visit museums and other indoor establishments in August because of the sweltering heat outdoors.

For the summer months in Athens, pack comfortable clothes that will keep you cool, especially during August when it gets really hot. This includes cotton shirts and tank tops as well as shorts and light pants. Bring sunscreen and sunglasses for the sunny days. It would also be handy to have a reusable water bottle that you can easily refill and bring with you anywhere. Not only will this ensure that you stay hydrated, but it is also eco-friendly and prevents you from using plastic bottles.

Fall in Athens: September - November

The fall season in Athens is a dream for a lot of tourists. It gives you the best of both worlds because the weather is still warm enough, with average daytime temperatures of 75 degrees F (24 degrees C), but the crowds are smaller compared to those during the summer. Hence, you can visit all the famous attractions and landmarks around Athens without rubbing elbows with other tourists. In addition, the hotel prices are also reduced as there are fewer visitors in the city.

When talking about early fall, September is a great month for exploring Athens as a lot of the establishments that closed down during August start to reopen. Most shops, restaurants and top nightclubs become active again as the majority of the locals return to mainland Greece from their trip to the islands. Several exciting events take place during this month, including the Athens International Film Festival, the Athens Street Food Festival, Athens Photo Festival, and the annual Athens book fair.

October is also a good time to stay in Athens because of the thriving city life. While there are fewer festivals taking place, the opera and theater season begins during this month. The weather also becomes less predictable. The average temperature is 72 degrees F (22 degrees C), which is still generally warm, but there is a higher chance of rain during the latter half of the month.

By the time the month of November comes along, the weather completely changes. The average temperature during this month falls to around 61 degrees F (16 degrees C) and grey, rainy days become more frequent. If you happen to be in Athens during the month, you can also witness (or even participate!) in the renowned Classic Authentic Athens Marathon.

If you want lower prices and fewer tourists, then autumn is an ideal time to visit Athens. When packing for fall in the city, you can stick to light clothes but be prepared to bring a rain jacket or an umbrella in case of rain. You may also want to have some layers to keep you warm during the colder temperatures at night.

best time to visit athens weather

Winter in Athens: December - February

Needless to say, winter brings the coldest temperatures of the year in Athens, which makes it the low season where very little tourist activity takes place. The average high temperature falls at around 54 degrees F (12 degrees C) max and could even go to as low as 45 degrees F (7 degrees C). However, if you do not mind having consistently chilly weather and lack of sunshine, winter is when you can surely get the best flight and hotel deals as well as cheaper ticket prices to the city's top attractions and archaeological sites.

December may be the wettest month of the year but it also has several highlights, especially as the Christmas season approaches. Even though it’s cold during this month, snowing is a rare sight (but not impossible); instead, precipitation is a more likely occurrence. Throughout the month, a range of Christmas-themed events are held, such as performances at the Athens Concert Hall, indoor skating rink pop ups, and holiday bazaars at Syntagma Square and all over the city.

January is the year's coldest month and brings with it unpredictable weather – one day you could be seeing some sunshine amidst the cold temperature while on other days you can expect rain all day long. For this reason, most of the fun things to do during this month involve outdoor activities, such as relaxing at one of the many hammams (Turkish baths) found in the city or enjoying a live musical performance at a bouzouki club, which stays open until the late hours.

The weather in February is nearly identical to that of January, although the days start to get warmer and the sun shows up more frequently. For this month, the crowds are still smaller than usual and prices for hotels remain generally cheaper. The highlight of February is definitely the Apokries or the Athens carnival. Held all over the city, the event stretches for three weeks leading up to the fasting of Lent.

Just as how you would pack for winter in any destination, packing for a winter trip to Athens means bringing warm clothes and layers, such as jackets, scarves and closed shoes. In case of rain, you should also have a raincoat or umbrella. If you’re headed to Athens around the month of February, you may want to bring a mix of clothing in case of warmer days.

Spring in Athens: March - May

For some, the spring season is the best time to visit Athens because of the nice weather, with average high temperatures of 68 degrees F (20 degrees C). Apart from the pleasant weather, the accommodation and flight prices during the spring months remain affordable. Plus, you have the chance to take in the beauty of attractions like the Acropolis Museum and Ancient Agora without an overwhelming crowd, as most tourists prefer to visit during the summer season.

March offers a relaxed atmosphere with weather that is predominantly sunny, though you can encounter some rainy days from time to time. There are also several national holidays celebrated during this month; one of the most important is the Greek National Anniversary. Held every March 25th, this holiday is the country’s Independence Day and celebrates Greece’s triumph against the Turks.

April officially marks the start of warm weather, with lots of sunny days and rare chances of precipitation, making it an excellent time to visit Athens. Because of the improving weather, the opening hours of most attractions are extended but the queues are still shorter compared to the high season. April is also the month when the most important national Greek holiday takes place - Greek Orthodox Easter . While the date changes every year, Holy Week typically takes place during April and ends on Easter Sunday; during this period, you can expect a lot of church services taking place as well as various establishments halting their operations.

When it comes to spring, the sun is almost always out and the temperatures increase as the season progress. However, because of the city’s proximity to the coast, some nights can still be chilly. It’s best to pack at least one layer of warm clothing, such as a light jacket or cardigan. Sunglasses, sunscreen and comfortable footwear are also a must, especially if you plan to do a lot of sightseeing on your trip.

When is the best time to visit Athens for you?

The best time to visit Athens is highly dependent on your personal goals and preferences. Although the Greek capital has something to offer all year long, certain seasons have their own appeal and special feature. For instance, if you want to experience warm weather and attend a range of exciting festivals, then the months of June and July are the best option for you.

If you want to still enjoy good weather but would like to avoid massive throngs of tourists, you may want to consider visiting during the spring season, particularly the months of March and April. On the other hand, if you are looking to save some money and would like to stretch your budget, you should think about visiting during winter, when most accommodations and airlines slash their prices to attract more tourists.

The Best Time to Visit Athens

Spring and autumn are perfect times to see Athens. You might be unlucky and get some rain, but chances are the skies will be blue and the temperature pleasant. The average in both May and October is a very pleasant 20C/68F. It's ideal for sightseeing and visiting the ancient sites, without having it unpleasantly hot.

Even in winter, don't rule Athens out. Skies can still be bright blue and the weather mild. January is the coldest month when the average drops to 12C/54F, but it can be much warmer than that. We've been to Athens in January and been strolling round in shorts and t-shirts. For much more detail, see the monthly breakdown on our Best Time to Visit Athens page.

Summer Heatwaves

The worst times to visit are probably from late July through to early September. The average temperature in midsummer is 32C/90F, which means on many days it exceeds that. Summer heatwaves have been a common phenomenon in recent, so avoid midsummer if you can..

Our Pick of the Athens Guides

Although the city has done an enormous amount in the past few years to reduce the problem of traffic congestion, which adds to the unpleasantness by helping create a summer smog, it hasn't got rid of it completely and the middle of summer is best avoided if at all possible.

Yes, It Does Rain in Athens!

It's surprising to discover that it rains in Athens on roughly 100 days each year. But sun-lovers shouldn't let that put them off, as on many of those days it's no more than an occasional light shower, and most of the rainfall is in the winter. The total rainfall over the course of a year averages out at about 15.5" (400mm), and hardly a drop falls from July to September.

When it does rain you'll want to read our page on  Athens in the Rain !

The Weather in Crete

As a comparison to Athens, in case you're combining the city with somewhere else, here's a note of what the weather is like in Crete .

If you want guaranteed sunshine then the best time to visit Crete is July and August, when there is no rain at all. In fact for the seven months from April to October, which makes up the main holiday season, on average there are only 18 days of rain. Temperatures remain mild all through the year, but in winter it does get wet.

April and May are probably the best two months to visit, when temperatures are pleasant without being too hot, there is very little rain, the island is not yet too busy and there is a profusion of wild flowers to see. September and October can also be pleasant, but more suited to swimmers than botanists. The landscape will be looking burnt out, but the sea temperatures will still be in the mid-70s (about 24C).

The holiday season usually runs from Easter to late October, and outside this period many hotels and restaurants will be closed. There are still plenty which open all year round, but your choice will be more limited.

These Are the Best Times to Visit Greece

Anthony Grant

Finally ready for that dream trip to Greece ? With a coastline longer than the United Kingdom's and thousands of islands, the country is a great place to visit any time of year. But absent a last-minute flight deal (and they do come up, though nonstop options from the US are still limited), planning ahead is the way to go in order to make the most of your time in Greece.

The urban attractions of Athens thrum at full tilt all year long, while most Greek islands are at their best once winter has left the picture. Whether it's sultry Mediterranean breezes you seek or the cheapest time to book that hotel room with a sea view in Mykonos, consider this your essential guide to planning a perfect trip to Greece.

The Best Weather in Greece

best time to visit athens weather

Generally, the best weather in Greece is what you'll experience in May, June and September. Plenty of sunny days that aren't too hot make May an ideal time for long, leisurely walks in Athens. By June, the beaches of the Aegean islands are warm enough for swimming and popular islands like Mykonos aren't crowded yet.

July is when things get toasty and sometimes uncomfortably humid in Athens, and the city is crowded with tourists then, too. August, naturally, means great beach weather, and if you like your big cities to yourself then it's also a fine time for Athens, as most Athenians ditch the capital.

September has lots of advantages (namely: fewer tourists), but the days are still long and warm and better yet, it's less humid than in July and August. In Crete, the southernmost Greek island, you can go swimming well into October.

The Best Times to Visit Cities in Greece

The two biggest cities in Greece are the capital, Athens , and Thessaloniki. Both are destinations in their own right and for culture vultures there is really no bad time to go. In the peak summer season, major attractions in Athens such as the Acropolis Museum are more crowded than in wintertime, when on many days you'll have even iconic places like the Acropolis largely to yourself. Winter in Athens is also a great time to check out lesser-known museums, tune up your Instagram or warm up in a luxe Turkish bath .

best time to visit athens weather

Generally speaking, think of April to June as the ideal times to explore Athens and other Greek cities including historic Nafplio. Thessaloniki is a vibrant city with a wealth of cultural attractions, but in the height of summer it gets so humid they actually have public fans in places to keep the air circulating.

Choose shoulder season months like October and May for an optimal experience there. Most island towns are empty of tourists from November until around the time of Greek Easter, but the main town in Corfu and the Cretan cities like Heraklion are up and running all year long.

When to Visit Greece for Events

From religious holidays to cultural festivals, there are plenty of events worth attending throughout the year.

Spring Events

Greek Orthodox Easter is the most important holiday in the Greek calendar by far. In 2019, Greek Easter falls on Sunday, April 28, but festivities actually begin the week prior on the Saturday of Lazarus. Easter is celebrated in different ways throughout the country, with many variations on the candlelit processions of Good Friday and Easter Sunday celebrations themselves — but you can count on plenty of lamb roasts and fireworks. Easter in Corfu is one of the most famous, but wherever you are in Greece during this time you can expect to experience at least some of the country's very rich and colorful Easter traditions.

Summer Events

Summer is when most music and arts festivals are in full swing. The Athens and Epidaurus Festival is the country's most prestigious annual summer arts festival, with events taking place at the ancient stone Odeon of Herodes Atticus theater (the Herodion) below the Acropolis as well as south of Athens at the amphitheater of Epidaurus, the best-preserved theater of the ancient world. Events include a mix of classic and contemporary (last summer, Bill Murray recited poetry in the Herodion) and are usually scheduled from late June to early August.

On the day of the August Full Moon Festival in Athens, museums and ancient sites are open in the evening free of charge until midnight.

Assumption is Aug. 15. It's a public holiday in Greece and considered the "Summer Easter." On this day, life in Athens pretty much grinds to a halt as Athenians dash off to the countryside or the islands. If you want to make sure you have a good place to stay anywhere outside of Athens on Aug. 15 or in the two weeks following, it's increasingly essential that you plan and reserve ahead of time.

Fall Events

The prestigious Thessaloniki International Film Festival is usually held during the first part of November. And while they're not exactly going to enrich anybody in cultural terms, Black Friday shopping events in November have recently taken Greeks by storm.

Winter Events

Christmas in Greece is nowhere near as big a deal as Greek Easter, but there are festive lights in the center of big cities like Athens. Also in Athens, New Year's Eve means festive fireworks over the Acropolis.

The Best Times to Explore the Greek Islands

The best times to visit mykonos and santorini.

What ultimately draws visitors to Santorini is the views over the volcanic caldera and not the beaches, and that appeal has fueled the island's rise as a year-round destination. May and June are the best times to dodge the crowds but also enjoy some sun. Otherwise, it's probably better to wait until after mid-September.

Mykonos is a bit trickier: in May and June (and again in September) you'll have more elbow room at the island's many beaches and posh beach bars, but to get a taste of the international razzle dazzle for which the place is most famous, July and August do rock to that inimitable Mediterranean island vibe. But it's also a very expensive vibe. Unlike in Santorini, by the end of September it's already very quiet again in Mykonos.

The Best Times to Visit Other Islands

Whether it's Corfu in the Ionian Islands, Rhodes and Patmos in the Dodecanese archipelago, Paros and the other islands that make up the Cyclades or Crete, the best time of year for an island visit is generally going to be in June, July or September. Prices are lower and hotel rooms are more readily available in June and September, and you can count on warm weather in those months, too.

Loads of Greeks and other Europeans on summer holiday can make island travel in August a real challenge — and sometimes a downright headache. And many islands have their off-season charms: For example, the Saronic Islands near Athens like Hydra and Aegina are easy and fun to visit any time of year (but beach time is mainly May through September).

When to Visit Greece to Avoid Crowds

The tourism season in Greece typically gets going after Greek Easter, with shoulder season ramping up in May and the peak season stretching from the latter part of June into July and all of August. Increasingly, in places like Athens and Crete, September is now considered a high season month.

If you want to avoid crowds in Athens, time your summer travel for June or August instead of July. In the Cycladic archipelago (which includes Mykonos and Santorini), avoid July and August unless you don't mind crowded ferries and higher prices.

In Crete, you can expect crowds at many beaches and in the cities of Heraklion and Chania from June right up until October, so consider June or early fall for Crete. By contrast, in Corfu where the beach season is not quite as long as in Crete, you'll have an easier time avoiding crowds in September.

Winter in Athens tends to be cold and damp, but there are still many sunny days and exploring museums and ancient ruins in the absence of crowds and big tour groups can be quite cool.

The Cheapest Times to Visit Greece

best time to visit athens weather

Traveling to Greece is usually priciest during peak season, so if you're looking to save, wait until the off-peak or shoulder seasons. The best hotel deals in Athens are going to be from early January through March, but weather is not at its best at that time. You can generally find good hotel deals in April, May, the first part of June and sometimes in September (but less so in Crete).

The shoulder seasons in Greece run from April through the first part of June, and then from about mid-September through mid-October.

Affordable Airfare

Unsurprisingly, airfare is at its most expensive during the summer. July, specifically, is the priciest month when, according to the farecasting app Hopper, long-haul flight prices are around $1,090 round-trip. In May, that dips to $930 round-trip. But during the shoulder seasons and in winter, prices plunge accordingly.

Currently, all American airlines offer only seasonal nonstop flights to Athens and they tend to be expensive, but there's often a workaround. Find a cheap ticket to either London Heathrow (LHR) or London Gatwick (LGW) and then find a flight that fits your schedule with Greek carrier Aegean : a Star Alliance member with several flights a day from London to Athens International Airport (ATH). Plus, you'll typically get better service than you would from the British low-cost carriers, plus meals are included.

Affordable Hotels

best time to visit athens weather

The most expensive time to book a hotel room in Athens is generally in the summer. The cheapest times are January (after the New Year holiday) and February. The most expensive time to book rooms in popular islands like Mykonos and Santorini is July and especially August.

According to Booking.com , based on bookings made between January 2018 and December 2018, hotels in Athens are 33% more affordable in February than compared to the most expensive month of the year, which (for Booking.com ) is June. Hotels in Santorini in January are 51% more affordable than they are in August, and for Mykonos, March is 73% more affordable than August.

If you're planning to visit Mykonos in the summer, you should plan ahead as much as possible and if you find a deal (paid or points), grab it. Expect hotels on many Greek islands — not just Mykonos and Santorini but also ones like Syros and Sifnos — to be completely sold out over the Aug. 15 Assumption holiday and do not assume you'll be able to find a deal, or anything really, on the spot during that extremely busy time.

In Crete's largest city of Heraklion as well as elsewhere on the island, the high season now effectively runs through the whole month of September, making it wise to book ahead in Crete even for early fall travel.

The Best Time to Visit Greece, According to a Local

T hink of a Mediterranean vacation, and Greece is sure to make your list of must-visit destinations. Its blend of seaside escapes, history, culture and mouthwatering cuisine make it one of the best places to travel for all types of tourists. And let's not forget its islands! They're prime honeymoon hot spots, consistently serving up some of the most romantic getaways . I can fully appreciate the draw—I loved it so much that I moved here, after all. And I'll tell you this: It pays to know the best time to visit Greece before booking your trip.

Greek vacations are more popular than ever. In fact, a recent report from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, found that Greece was one of only six member countries to receive more flights in September 2023 than it did in September 2019. In other words, Greece is bouncing back to pre-COVID-19 levels. And that means you'll have to contend with other tourists if you take a trip here.

As a local who's lived in and written about this eclectic country for more than a decade, I know from experience that it's impossible to avoid tourists entirely. It's all about timing. Whether you want to beat the crowds, bask in the best weather imaginable or travel on the cheap , here's the best time to visit Greece for the ultimate European vacation.

What is the best time of year to visit Greece?

It's hard to pinpoint a single best time to visit Greece, and that's because it all depends on your priorities and how you weigh crowdedness, cost and climate. To spend the least amount of money, you may need to visit when temps are on the cooler side. For peak sunbathing weather, you'll shell out more cash and contend with greater crowds.

If you want to avoid a Greece overrun by tourists, skip the summer months. In June, July and August, beaches are typically crowded, though it's possible to find hidden coves even during this peak season—especially if you take a small boat tour from or around some of the islands or the Athens coastline.

No matter when you land on Greek soil, you'll have to deal with some tourists. According to Bank of Greece data, 5.76 million international travelers visited the country in the first five months of 2023, proof of Greece's ever-growing popularity. Still, there are quieter times to explore the country, such as during the shoulder-season months of September and October, early November and late March through May. Whether you're discovering ancient ruins, exploring mainland destinations or bopping around little-known islands, you'll find fewer crowds, mild temps and cheaper-than-high-season prices.

For me, the best time to visit Greece is from September until the end of October. The weather on a lot of the southern islands, such as Rhodes and Crete, is still warm enough to swim, with average daytime temperatures of 75 and 73 degrees respectively. Plus, the crowds are gone, as children have headed back to school.

Springtime is also a great option, and I recommend timing your visit so you can experience Greek Orthodox Easter. It usually falls in April or May (in 2024, it occurs on May 5), and it's the most important holiday on the Greek calendar—more so than Christmas even. Expect to eat plenty of delicious lamb and join in neighborhood celebrations and street processions to the local church.

What time of year is the cheapest to visit Greece?

While a Greek getaway isn't necessarily cheap, there are ways to save money when traveling to the country. For starters, avoid the high-season summer months of June, July and August. The winter off-season sees prices drop considerably, and this tends to be the best time to find hotel deals. On Tripadvisor, for instance, the same Athens hotel costs about $52 more in April than in January—and though summer rates aren't available yet, it's safe to bet that the price will rise in June, July and August.

Traveling during the winter will serve you well when booking your flight too. The cheapest airfare from the United States tends to occur during the winter months. When I searched Expedia for flights for a two-week vacation, I found a round-trip ticket from Newark, New Jersey, to Athens in early December going for $473. A round-trip ticket from Newark to Athens in June comes in at $992.

When is the weather the best in Greece?

Best weather is subjective, depending on where you're traveling from and if you like your vacation to be hot. Without a doubt, the summer of 2023 set records. As the Guardian reported, the country had the hottest July in 50 years, with temperatures in Athens repeatedly exceeding 104 degrees. So if you're here for the Mediterranean island sunbathing, you'll need to account for these levels of heat (and maybe plan some indoor activities, just in case).

As a local, I think the best time to travel to Greece for great weather is September, when daytime temperatures are a balmy 82 degrees and sea temperatures 77 degrees, making swimming still possible. The fall months of October and early November average 64 to 72 degrees, so it's pleasant to sit outside at a cafe, sipping the staple drink of a Greek frappe (cold coffee milkshake).

December through February are the country's coldest months, with daytime temperatures averaging 54 to 57 degrees. Thanks to the Mediterranean climate, winters can be mild—but they're also wet. You may even see snow on the mainland in the mountainous areas to the north and on some of the islands, such as Crete. It creates good skiing opportunities, and while they can't compete with some of the world's more famous ski resorts, there are a handful of ski resorts in the country that locals (and in-the-know tourists) use yearly.

When packing your suitcase , think layers for all seasons. And be prepared for high humidity, which makes it feel sticky in the summer and chilly in the winter.

What is the best time of year to go to Athens?

The best time to visit Greece if you're planning to stop in the capital city is during the fall or spring shoulder seasons. In April, May, September and October, daytime and nighttime temperatures aren't uncomfortably hot or too cold. The spring and fall months offer plenty of opportunity to wander the Athenian streets, discovering the small neighborhoods. Plus, the cooler weather makes climbing up to the Acropolis a much more pleasurable experience.

It's also worth mentioning that crowds in the shoulder season and off-season are considerably smaller, so lines to enter the Acropolis are shorter. In fact, the wait to view this ancient monument gets so long in the summer that Greece had to set a cap of 20,000 visitors daily to shorten lines during the dangerous heat. By visiting in the off-season, you won't be waiting in line in the sweltering heat, and there won't be a mad rush to buy a ticket before the cap is reached.

If you're looking for even more things to do in Greece , visit on Ohi Day. The national holiday occurs on Oct. 28 and commemorates the day in 1940 when Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas rejected Mussolini's ultimatum to have free passage through Greece for his Italian troops. You'll find street parades all over the country on this holiday, but the one in central Athens is particularly impressive, with its added military parade and marching band.

What is the best time to visit Santorini and the other Greek islands?

Greece is famous for its islands, especially Santorini, with its blue-domed churches and sugar cube houses, so atypical for the Cycladic island chain it's located within, and Mykonos, with its cosmopolitan atmosphere, cobbled alleyways and hidden coves. They tend to attract visitors during the summer months, but that may not be the ideal time to vacation here.

If you're looking for a beach vacation away from the crowds, my advice would be to book a trip for September. It'll still be warm enough to swim and get a nice tan, but you won't have to deal with a ton of tourists.

Don't rule out wintertime for your trip to the Greek islands. Admittedly, much shuts down in the off season, but you'll get to experience the real Greece, have frequent sunny days and still find places to eat traditional Greek food, such as souvlaki (the locals need to eat too!). The lack of crowds allows you to roam the islands at your own pace.

Besides, temps aren't too bad even in the winter. Santorini's caldera entices with morning mists floating over its surface. And with average winter temperatures of 55 degrees, it's not too chilly.

There are several flights from mainland Greece to the islands that are cheaper during the spring and fall, but my favorite way to travel is by ferry. The lack of competition on ferry routes means this method of transportation isn't cheap at any time of the year, but Greek ferries resemble mini cruise ships and offer lovely cabins on longer routes. Make it a part of the whole experience: Take a weekend break in Athens followed by a journey by ferry to the islands. Note that ferries have a reduced schedule in the spring and fall months, with more connections in the summer.

How many days in Greece is enough?

Just as you would when planning a trip to destinations like London and Hawaii , start by considering where you'll be flying out of. The ideal number of days to spend in Greece depends on where you're traveling from. If you're flying from the United States, you probably want to spend longer in the country than if you're adding a stop in Greece after visiting nearby Italy.

Also consider how much of the country you want to see and the type of tourism you're interested in. Do you want to stick to a few days in Athens exploring the ancient sites, then head to an island for some fun in the sun? Do you want to just connect in Athens before flying immediately to a Greek island, or would you rather make the city your home base for the entire trip? Or are you interested in heading to the Greek countryside to experience traditional villages?

Most trips start and end in Athens, where you can experience the city in at least three full days. Visitors then tend to hop on a ferry or fly to a popular Greek island like Santorini or Mykonos, either basing themselves there or ferry-hopping between two or three others. You can reach mainland destinations by train or by hiring a car—factor in travel times between destinations when planning your vacation.

For a decent taster of the country, plan for a 10-day trip: Athens, plus one or two islands. Two weeks can provide a lovely combination of a city break and countryside getaways, plus swimming and sunbathing around the Greek coast.

One thing's for sure: Don't try to see it all in one trip. Greece is a country to savor and explore at leisure, with time to wander the charming cobbled streets and sip a frappe in a local cafe, watching local life unfold around you. Greece and its monuments have been around for centuries—they're not going anywhere.

Places to stay in Greece

Most vacations in Greece will commence in Athens, and there are many neighborhoods to choose from when booking a stay. While not a sprawling city by U.S. standards, it is one of the bigger European cities.

If you've never visited Athens before, a hotel located smack dab in the center, near the Acropolis and its accompanying museum, is a great choice. The upscale Herodion Hotel attracts visitors with its rooftop-bar views of the famous monument. Plus, it offers airport transfers.

Boutique hotels such as Asomaton (don't miss its relaxing plunge pool) and Altar Suites have cozy vibes in lovingly renovated centuries-old buildings. They're within walking distance of all Athens's main sites, as well as the contemporary old gasworks district of Gazi, where you'll find nightlife, tavernas and the industrial museum.

Heading to Santorini, base yourself at either Voreina Gallery Suites or Zannos Melathron Hotel . Both properties were renovated to their former splendor in the less-busy village of Pyrgos. You still get the magnificent Caldera sunset views without the crowds.

In Mykonos, Mykonos Town makes the best base if you don't mind being in the thick of it all. Hotels such as Semeli and Myconian Korali Relais & Chateaux have sleek Grecian lines and unfussy furnishings. Both have pools and airport transfers.

King George, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Athens

More than 23 million people arrived in Greece between January and October 2023. Some 6 million of these people landed at the Athens International Airport, showing a 28.4 percent year-over-year growth in the country's tourism. Yes, it was a record year for Athens, but really, the capital city has always been a travel favorite thanks to its fantastic historical sites, its drool-worthy food, and, of course, its hospitality — especially at its world-class hotels.

"Athens is a classic and timeless destination that offers visitors everything from the ancient culture to coastal beaches and a lively metropolitan experience," said Liam Dunch, the Europe product manager for tour operator Abercrombie & Kent . "As the birthplace of democracy and one of the world's ancient capitals, the history is rich, and there is a tremendous amount to learn about Greek civilization and mythology."

It's a spot I've grown more in love with after every visit. As a Greek American, I have a special connection to my ancestral home, so much so that I've made it my mission to return every year to discover something new — and share it with all of you. (Just check out my take on how to spend a perfect day in Athens here .)

This includes the Plato Bar and Lounge, where guests can get a glass of Greek wine, and the Symposium restaurant, named after Plato’s work of the same name, which serves Mediterranean-style breakfasts. Know Before You Go

  • Decide how important location is to you: The hotels and resorts on this list are sprinkled across the city and down onto the coastline. Before you book, consider what you’d prefer — beachside access or city views.
  • Remember the high season: Greece's high season runs over June, July, and August. This is when destinations tend to get rather crowded and when the city sees its highest temperatures of the year. If you hope to have a more personal experience, try the shoulder seasons from May to mid-June and September through October.
  • Think about any amenities you can’t live without: Hotels in Athens range from charming boutique spots to over-the-top resorts. Before you book, consider what amenities (like a spa, on-site restaurants, or a gym) you need to have a spectacular stay.

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

best time to visit athens weather

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

best time to visit athens weather

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.  Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.

AAA Travel Agent Survey Methodology

AAA clubs distributed surveys to a random sample of their travel agents between March 18 and March 29, 2024 to understand recent traveler trends over the past 60 days. 186 AAA agent responses were collected from 13 AAA clubs (representing 97% of AAA membership overall as of February 2024).

7 Amazing Beaches Near Athens for a Relaxing Day Trip

Photo of author

by Sophia C.

It may be easy to forget when touring around the bustling historical center, but Athens is a coastal city. Long stretches of white and rocky sand line the southern and eastern edges of the metropolis, and in the spring and summer, they are every Athenian’s favorite way to survive the heat. There are both private beaches with cafes and recliners, and more natural beaches sheltered by white cliffs.

Our favorite beaches to visit in Athens

If you are looking to get to the beach fast, Edem is the closest beach to the center of Athens. Take the tram from central Syntagma square, and the first moment you spot the sea through the windows, hop off! With a small stretch of sand, and calm waters, this is a favorite for Athens’ students looking to squeeze in a quick dip after classes. This beach has no entrance fee, and is open to anyone who wants to spread out a beach towel, so it can get quite crowded on the weekends.

Insider’s tip : We recommend Edem for a quick dip on a weekday after a morning of sight-seeing!

Vouliagmeni Beach

Located in the upscale suburb of Vouliagmeni , this managed beach offers crystal-clear waters and a relaxing atmosphere. The beach has recliners, racquetball, volleyball, showers, a canteen, and a playground so is great for families with beach-goers of all ages. Entrance is 10 euros on weekdays, 15 on weekends. You can reach this beach by taking the red line to Agrioupoli station and then the 122 bus. (You can also visit Lake Vouliagmeni nearby, known for its thermal springs.)

Glyfada Beach

Situated in the coastal suburb of Glyfada , this beach is popular among locals and visitors alike. It offers sandy shores, clear waters, and various nearby beach clubs, cafes, and restaurants. Stretches of the beach are set up with recliners, and other stretches are completely free, so you can choose where you’d like to sit depending on your taste and budget.

Surrounded by pine-studded cliffs, and with a view into the Aegean, this is a truly Athenian experience. This beach is reached most easily by taking the A2 bus until the Dikegorika stop.

Astir Beach

This managed beach in the area of Vouliagmeni offers some really deluxe amenities, including big reclining sunbeds, umbrellas, wifi included, and water sports facilities. You can even book your lounge chair ahead of time to guarantee a full day of relaxation. If you’re looking for somewhere to lounge comfortably, and be served an icy freddo espresso , look no further.

But all this luxury comes with a price: two sun beds will run you 80 euros on a weekday and 160 euros on the weekend.

Varkiza Resort Beach

This beach park offers basically every amenity or activity you could ever want at the beach. In addition to big comfy sunbeds and umbrellas, there’s also a full beach bar, cafe, and restaurant to satisfy your every craving. For more active beach-goers this resort has a whole host of water and beach sports: beach tennis, beach volley, free aqua aerobic and fitness events, water sports, windsurfing, and water skiing.

Located in the suburb of Varkiza , It’s a popular spot for families with children. A simple entrance is around 8 euros, and entrance with a reclining chair will cost 10 euros on weekdays, 20 euros on weekends. You can reach the beach park by taking the red line to Agrioupoli station and then the 171 bus.

Vravrona Beach

This beach is on the eastern side of Athens, close to the international airport. It has a wild sandy pebbled shore, with gorgeous views out to the eastern islands. There are both organized bits of the beach, and plenty of free space to set up your own towel and umbrella.

Since Vravrona beach is not along the popular southern Athens riviera, and can be a bit of a hike to get to with public transit, it is often calmer and less busy than many of the other beaches on our list. To visit Vravrona take the blue line of the metro to the nomismatokopio station, and then the 304 bus.

Schinias Beach

Situated on the northeastern coast of Attica, Schinias Beach is known for its long stretch of soft sand and shallow gentle waters, surrounded by a small forest. If you are looking for a simple au-naturale beach experience, this is the spot. There are no recliners here, and no beach bars– so bring a towel, an umbrella, snacks, drinks, and lots and lots of sunblock.

Insider’s tip : getting to this beach on public transit is complicated and slow, but if you have a rental car it’s an easy one-hour drive!

All you need to know for Memorial Day weekend travel, traffic and weather

The price of a getaway this Memorial Day weekend may be a headache at the airport or on the highway as the hectic summer travel season kicks off.

As travelers set out for a brief vacation over Memorial Day weekend before heading home, it’s likely that jams will hold up highway traffic and clog airport security lines over the coming days.

AAA predicts that this Memorial Day weekend may be the busiest in terms of holiday travel in nearly 20 years. Amid this summer’s potentially record-breaking travel season, here’s how to speed up your commute this Memorial Day weekend.

How many Americans will travel for Memorial Day?

AAA anticipates that from Thursday to Monday (Memorial Day), 43.8 million Americans will be traveling at least 50 miles away from home. Road trips seem to be especially popular, with AAA projecting that nearly 9 in 10 of these Americans will travel by car, the highest number of Memorial Day weekend road trippers since AAA started tracking these numbers in 2000.

While the association projects that more than 38 million Americans will be traveling by car, airports won’t be immune to jams either.

In fact, the Transportation Security Administration is preparing for more than 18 million people to pass through airport security checkpoints from Thursday to Wednesday, May 29.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, in a press release. “We’re projecting an additional 1 million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

The travel headache over Memorial Day weekend may be only the start of a potentially record-breaking summer travel season, as U.S. airlines are projecting that 271 million passengers will fly from June 1 to Aug. 31, up from last summer’s record of 255 million travelers. In fact, the TSA has forecasted that it will see the highest volumes of travelers passing through airport security checkpoints ever this summer travel season.

What is the busiest travel day for Memorial Day weekend?

As Americans have widely reported in polls that they are concerned about the country’s economy, road tripping has emerged as a popular method of travel this Memorial Day weekend due to its flexibility and convenience, according to AAA.

Bob Pishue, a transportation analyst at the traffic management company INRIX, predicted that travel times for drivers would be up to 90% longer than they typically are. Sunday, May 27 and Memorial Day itself were expected to be especially busy, as trips back home would peak then, according to INRIX.

For those picking up rental cars, rental car company Hertz expected that Thursday and Friday, May 24 would be the busiest days.

In terms of air travel, the TSA anticipated that Friday, May 24 would rank as the busiest travel day for the entire Memorial Day weekend, with nearly 3 million people passing through airport security checkpoints on that day alone.

“In close coordination with airport, airline and travel partners, we are more than ready to handle this summer’s increased travel volumes,” David Pekoske, a TSA administrator, said in a press release. “We are also continuing to deploy state-of-the-art checkpoint technology that increases security effectiveness, efficiency and enhances the passenger experience, and our retention and recruitment numbers are the highest they’ve ever been.”

When is the best time to travel on Memorial Day weekend?

For the millions predicted to hit the road for a weekend getaway in the coming days, INRIX advised that drivers setting out on Thursday or Friday get on the road early to avoid running into traffic from other travelers. In addition, the company said that drivers heading home on Sunday, May 26 or on Memorial Day should avoid traveling during the afternoon, as trips home would peak then.

AAA predicted that these would be the best times for drivers to travel over Memorial Day weekend:

  • Thursday: Before 11 a.m. and after 7 p.m.
  • Friday, May 24: Before 11 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 25: Before 1 p.m. and after 6 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 26: Before 1 p.m.
  • Memorial Day: After 7 p.m.

What time is heaviest traffic on Memorial Day weekend?

AAA projected that these times would be the busiest for drivers:

  • Thursday: Noon to 6 p.m.
  • Friday, May 24: Noon to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 25: 2-5 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 26: 3-7 p.m.
  • Memorial Day: 3-7 p.m.

Tips for speeding up travel time on Memorial Day weekend

With weekend highway closures for maintenance, like the unpopular closures of portions of Interstate 17 last weekend and Mother’s Day weekend that led to hours-long traffic jams, drivers should carefully plan their trips in accordance with highway conditions. Pishue advised that drivers avoid being stuck in traffic by doing the following:

  • Checking services like az511.com , which shows Arizona highway conditions in real-time
  • Staying up to date on traffic through local news outlets. The Republic publishes a list of Valley freeway closures for the weekend using data from the Arizona Department of Transportation that drivers can consult to plan their commutes.
  • Looking at traffic apps, like Waze , which displays a live traffic map. Chandler became the first Arizona city to share traffic information through Waze, meaning that users can view the locations of street closures, construction sites and maintenance projects in Chandler based on official information from the city itself.

While the TSA said that it’s prepared to deal with the influx of passengers that will be flooding airports nationwide this Memorial Day weekend, the administration and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport advised air travelers to follow these tips to keep from holding up lines through airport security checkpoints:

  • Allow extra time to travel to the airport and get through security checkpoints amid the busy holiday travel season. The TSA advised that passengers factor in extra time for all the activities they may need to do before getting to their gates — from parking to returning rental cars to taking shuttles to the airport to checking in with their airlines to going through security. Check current wait times at Sky Harbor’s security checkpoints at skyharbor.com or at the flight information screens throughout the airport.
  • Reserve parking at Sky Harbor beforehand at the airport’s parking website .
  • Review the status of flights in advance through airline websites or skyharbor.com before arriving at Sky Harbor for a flight, picking up travelers or dropping off passengers.
  • Make a free reservation in Sky Harbor’s PHX RESERVE program to save a spot in the TSA security checkpoint lines in Terminal Three and Terminal Four. Travelers are able to make reservations and walk-in appointments through PHX RESERVE from 4-11 a.m. at Terminal Three if they’re flying out any time from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. In Terminal Four, passengers are eligible for PHX RESERVE from 5:30-11 a.m. as long as their flight is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Because availability for walk-in appointments is limited, reservations, which travelers can make up to six days before their flight, are advised.
  • Begin packing for the airport with an empty bag. The TSA said that travelers who empty their bags before packing them are less likely to be stopped by airport security due to having prohibited items. The administration advised that passengers consult TSA guidelines to learn what they can — and can’t — bring on flights. Travelers heading to the beach for Memorial Day weekend must pack sunscreen in containers that are larger than 3.4 ounces in check-in bags.

How much will gas prices be on Memorial Day weekend?

AAA projected that this Memorial Day weekend, pump prices will be similar to last year’s, when gas nationwide cost about $3.57 on average. While gas prices increased over the spring, the association said they’ve been relatively steady in the last few weeks.

AAA reported on Thursday that the national average price for a gallon of gas wavered only slightly as compared with the price a week before until it increased by a penny to $3.61, a nickel less than a month ago but 7 cents more than a year before. In Arizona, the average gas price on Thursday was over a quarter higher at about $3.88, which was still nearly a quarter less than it was a month ago and over 70 cents less than it was a year ago.

The lack of movement in pump prices in the days before Memorial Day was typical of the time, according to the association.

However, that may change as the summer driving season begins, which may cause gas prices to creep up. The business of Memorial Day weekend may also drive pump prices up — at least temporarily — AAA wrote.

“Since the pandemic, the summer driving season has not seen a surge in demand, which can push pump prices higher,” AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said. “So it will be interesting to see if this year bucks that trend.”

Geopolitical factors, like conflict in the Middle East and Ukraine, may also lead to changes in pump prices, as they could shock the oil market. In addition, Gross said that while the Biden administration’s decision to sell almost 1 million barrels of gas in northeastern states, which was announced Tuesday, may keep regional gas prices from surging, the national average pump price probably will not change much.

Do flight prices go up on Memorial Day weekend?

Even though this Memorial Day weekend is slated to be the busiest for airports in nearly 20 years, AAA found that plane ticket prices for this weekend were comparable to last year’s. Domestic flight ticket prices increased by up to 2%, according. Popular American destinations included Miami beaches, Seattle cruise ports, New York and Las Vegas while European cities like Rome, London and Paris dominated the list of frequently booked international spots, according to AAA booking data.

The association wrote that numerous factors determine plane ticket prices for passengers, including where they’re flying, how many stops they’re making and the fare class they choose. As a result, travelers who book a nonstop flight, seat selection and an included carry-on will probably pay more than passengers who opt for basic economy and a layover flight.

Why will Memorial Day weekend be so busy?

Lower travel prices may be behind the busyness predicted to hit airports and highways this Memorial Day weekend. Airfare decreased by 6% and hotel rates fell by 0.4% as compared with prices from a year before, according to data released this week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In addition, the cost of renting a car or truck has decreased by 10%.

For road trippers, however, the national average price of gas is still over a nickel higher than a year ago.

What is the weather like on Memorial Day weekend?

It’s expected that triple-digit weather will make its return in the Valley over Memorial Day weekend, meaning that Phoenicians are slated to see some of the highest temperatures all year so far over the holiday weekend.

The triple-digit weather is predicted to continue over the weekend into much of next week and perhaps longer, signaling a hot and dry June. While temperatures will fall from a 98-degree high on Friday, May 24 to a high of 91 degrees on Saturday, May 25, they’ll climb to a 102-degree high on Memorial Day. By Wednesday, May 30, temperatures are slated to creep up to a high of 105 degrees.

What about fire risk?

Restrictions are in place for most of the Tonto National Forest as well as state trust lands in three counties.

That means no fireworks, no fires outside of grills, no target shooting and limitations on where people enjoying the great outdoors can go to grab a smoke.

The restrictions are the lowest level of limitations on public lands.

The Tonto Forest restrictions kicked in Thursday and will remain in place through Sept. 30. The areas immediately in and around Globe and Payson are exempt.

State trust land requires users to get a permit before accessing the land for hiking or other purposes. Restrictions are in place for these lands in Gila, Maricopa and Pinal counties.

How to Observe the Northern Lights This Weekend

The Space Weather Prediction Center said solar activity would be high again on Saturday.

Northern Lights Glow in the Sky Amid Solar Storm

Powerful solar flare activity made the aurora borealis visible unusually far south..

[Laughing] Holy moly. I know. This — I thought it would just be over on the horizon a little — Behind us, too. Yeah. A little green on the horizon. Nothing like this. This is — This is like, ‘Oh, my god.’ Everywhere.

Video player loading

By Claire Moses

Keep an eye on the skies on Saturday night for what could be another dazzling display of nature — or not, depending on your location and weather conditions.

An unusual amount of solar flare activity means that the aurora borealis, or the northern lights, could continue to appear over the weekend.

The solar storm was a level 5 on Friday, which gave some star gazers a clear view of streaks of green, purple and red that arced across the skies. Those conditions are expected to continue, Mike Bettwy, the operations chief of the Space Weather Prediction Center, said on Saturday.

“It should be fairly similar to what we saw last night, maybe not as widespread but fairly close,” Mr. Bettwy said.

“Depending on how everything evolves,” he added, “tomorrow night might actually be better than tonight” for views of the aurora.

In areas with clear skies, the display on Sunday could be similar to what people witnessed on Friday.

If you’re in a place with a lot of bright lights — like a city — it’s going to be hard to see anything. And then there are other complications, like the weather.

Two weather systems on Saturday night could impair viewing of the solar display, said Bryan Jackson, a forecaster at the Weather Prediction Center.

The Northeast is likely to be overcast because of a cloud system that could stretch from the Midwest and center over Pennsylvania. Cloud coverage might also extend as far as Maine, with the potential to clear around New Hampshire.

“This event is strong enough that the Northeast United States pretty much universally has a good shot at seeing it,” Mr. Bettwy said. “It’s just a matter of making sure that the cloud cover is absent.”

A second storm system, which was predicted to produce a fair amount of rain and cloud coverage, is possible over the Southwest.

Mr. Jackson said Michigan was likely to have clear skies between waves of rain. Other regions of the country could have clear views, too.

“In Seattle, it was pretty clear last night and it looks to be pretty clear again,” Mr. Jackson said on Saturday. “Portions of the southern Rockies, portions of the southern Plains are not overcast, but not completely clear either.”

The lights were particularly brilliant over England on Friday, and images of the solar show awed onlookers in parts of Maine and Massachusetts.

A tip: If you are in a clear area, even south of where the aurora is forecast, snap a picture or record a video with your cellphone.

The sensor on the camera is more sensitive to the wavelengths produced by the aurora and may produce an image you can’t see with the naked eye.

Why is this happening?

A severe solar storm is brewing.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center on Friday issued a rare warning after a solar outburst reached Earth.

As nuclear reactions occur on the sun, it routinely expels material from its surface.

Officials said that the solar activity could potentially cause electrical outages or interfere with navigation and communication systems.

When is this happening?

The expelled material from the sun could reach Earth’s atmosphere by Friday afternoon or evening, officials said.

“What we’re expecting over the next couple of days should be more significant than what we’ve seen, certainly so far,” Mike Bettwy, the operations chief at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said at a news conference on Friday.

What’s flaring up?

The Space Weather Prediction Center said on Friday night that we were experiencing an extreme solar storm, a level 5 , up from a level 4 earlier in the day .

The last extreme event happened in October 2003 and resulted in power failures in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa, the center said.

The current storm is caused by a cluster of sunspots — dark, cool regions on the solar surface. The cluster is flaring and ejecting material every six to 12 hours.

“We anticipate that we’re going to get one shock after another through the weekend,” said Brent Gordon, chief of the space weather services branch at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

Katrina Miller , Emmett Lindner and Judson Jones contributed reporting.
