ATP and WTA Rankings

tennis rankings

Below are links to the latest ATP and WTA rankings for singles and doubles.

There are two different ranking tables for each. The first are the official world rankings updated weekly on Mondays when points from the previous 52 weeks have dropped. These rankings are used for seedings and determining which tournament a player can enter directly.

The second table is the live rankings; this showcases real-time rankings of a player’s position in the race to finish in the Top 8 for the season-ending ATP and WTA Finals. They are updated frequently each week, and players can jump around spots daily.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often are the rankings updated?

The official rankings are updated every Monday, except during the middle of Grand Slam tournaments and Miami + Indian Wells.

How do tennis rankings work?

Rankings work on a rolling 52-week period and take into account a player’s best results in 19 tournaments for the ATP and 16 for the WTA.

When 52 weeks have passed since the points were acquired, they are dropped, and new points are added. If you match your performance from 52 weeks ago, you have a net gain/loss of zero points. You’ll gain points if you better your performance, but if you perform worse, you’ll lose points.

A full explanation of how rankings work can be found here.

What is a protected ranking, and who can use them?

A player can gain protected ranking status when physically injured and does not compete in any tennis event for a minimum of six months. The petition is issued to the ATP (usually the CEO) and must be received within six months of his last tournament.

The protected ranking gives a player a spot in the rankings determined by the player’s average ATP Rankings position during the first three months of his injury.

The Entry Protection status gives players entry into the main draw or qualifying competition or for special exempt consideration.

Protected rankings cannot be used for seeding purposes or Lucky Loser consideration, nor can they be used for a top eight player to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals.

How long does a protected ranking last?

A player can use a protected ranking for the first nine tournaments they compete in using the Entry Protection or for up to nine months, beginning with the first tennis event that the player competes in, whichever happens first. This excludes wild cards and entries as a Direct Acceptance, should the true ranking allow this.

Suppose a player is physically injured and does not compete in any tennis event for twelve months or longer. In that case, the entry protection shall be in effect for the first twelve singles tournaments and the first twelve doubles tournaments that the player competes in using the entry protection or for the period up to twelve months beginning with the first tennis event that the player competes in, whichever occurs first.

How are players separated when they have the same amount of ranking points?

When two or more players have the same total number of points, the player who has the following will be ranked higher:

  • The most total points combined from the Grand Slams, ATP Masters 1000 mandatory tournaments, and Nitto ATP Finals main draws, and if still tied, then,
  • The fewest events played, counting all missed Grand Slams, ATP Masters 1000 tournaments and Nitto ATP Finals they could have played – as if played, and if still tied, then,
  • The highest number of points from one tournament, then the second highest, if needed, and so on.

What are the points distributions for each tournament?

ATP Ranking Point Distributions For 2024

Note there are some changes for 2024, with more points on offer in many tournaments; for example, a finalist at ATP 500 level now gets 330 points, compared to the previous 300.

WTA Ranking Point Distributions For 2024

*Nitto ATP Finals: 1500 points for the undefeated champion; players get 200 points per round-robin match win, 400 for a semi-final win, and 500 for the final win.

**The doubles team that qualifies gets 45 ranking points; the team that loses in the final round of qualifiers receives 25.

ATP Rankings: Novak Djokovic extends lead, but Jannik Sinner at No 1 in Live Rankings. Giovanni Perricard +51

Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner post-match hug

Novak Djokovic remains at No 1 in the official ATP Rankings, but he may well have started his final fortnight at the top with Jannik Sinner primed to strike.

Tennis great Djokovic has now spent an incredible 427 weeks at No 1 and the 24-time Grand Slam winner will also spend next week at the top as the next rankings update will only take place after the French Open.

In fact, Djokovic managed to increase his lead at the top by 100 points following his run to the semi-final of the Geneva Open and he now sits on 9,960 points – a 1,190-point lead over Sinner in second place.

That would be considered a healthy lead in normal circumstances, but different rules are in place at Grand Slams as Djokovic will drop 2,000 points at Roland Garros as he is the defending champion.

It means Sinner has already become the unofficial world No 1 as the Italian only has 45 points to defend in Paris with the Live Rankings putting him on 8,735 points (players earn 10 points just for featuring in the first round) with Djokovic on 7,970.

READ MORE: The battle for No 1: How Jannik Sinner can usurp Novak Djokovic at French Open

Djokovic will need to reach at least the semi-final to stand any hope of preventing Sinner from becoming the new world No 1.

But back to the official rankings, there were no changes in the top 10 although Casper Ruud was a big winner as he earned 240 points after winning the Geneva Open title.

Alexander Bublik moved up three places to No 17 after reaching the semi-final of the Lyon Open while the man who beat him at the ATP 250 event, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, is into the top 100.

The 20-year-old Perricard became tennis’ newest title winner when he defeated Tomas Etchevvery in the final in Lyon and he surged 51 places to a career-high No 66 on the back of his trophy.

Tomas Machac – the man who ended Djokovic’s run in Geneva – also climbed to a career-high as he moved up 10 places to No 34.

ATP Ranking live: Jannik Sinner is virtually No.1

A nalyzing the beginning of the Roland Garros , we can see how Jannik Sinner is currently virtually the new ATP No.1   in the live ranking . It would be a historic result as no Italian tennis player has ever managed to become No.1 in the ATP ranking. Obviously the Roland Garros is still long; two weeks separate us from the final. Weeks in which anything can still happen. From now until the end of the season, Jannik will have several opportunities to overcome the current ATP no.1 Novak Djokovic , but he will have the most important chances from Paris until the US Open. In fact, Sinner has no points to defend between now and the end of the Major in Paris, while Djokovic has to defend the title and, in fact, without at least reaching the final, the Serbian champion would lose the throne of men's tennis.

Sinner can become No.1 with the same result as Djokovic during the tournament and even losing the final against the Serbian. Without considering that Jannik already has an excellent advantage in the rankings over Carlos Alcaraz , Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev . Still considering the live ranking, Medvedev would currently have overtaken Zverev in the rankings, while there are many situations to evaluate. In the Top-10, for example, Hubert Hurkacz and Alex De Minaur could obtain the Best Ranking during this tournament, despite their lack of aptitude in clay tennis.

Sinner, yesterday, won the first round of his Parisian fortnight by beating the American Christophen Eubanks in straight sets, and at least confirmed the result achieved last year at the French Open. A lot has changed for him in these twelve months. The Italian would be one of the main favorites to win the tournament, but his physical condition following the hip injury suffered at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters needs to be assessed.

Meanwhile, Djokovic is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated men at the Roland Garros. The Serbian tennis player is going through a very difficult moment in this, considering how in Geneva he also highlighted various difficulties and struggles to express his best tennis. Between Rome and Geneva, Nole gave in to athletes of a lower rank than him and gave less than satisfactory answers. the Serbian is called to defend the Roland Garros, a tournament which he won last year. Nole also wants to defend first place in the ranking but is aware that there are major difficulties on the horizon. In the press conference before playing the tournament (he will play today - Tuesday 28 May - his first round against the Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert) Djokovic analyzed his moment.

"I have low expectations and high hopes. I know what I'm capable of and usually in Slams I play my best tennis or at least that's the goal. I want to give my best here in Paris, last year was incredible and I hope to do a great tournament. These first five months of the season have certainly influenced me and I focus every day on being able to develop form and momentum to go as far as possible. How do I deal with dark times? They are obstacles, I wouldn't call them dark dangers.

We must always look ahead, to the next challenge and to understand what it takes to be better than the previous week. This is the mentality I want to maintain, I know my qualities and I know that I can compete at the highest level.

I have won 24 Slams and I know what I have to do to move forward. It is a type of tournament different from the others and sensations that no other tournament gives you. Low expectations? It's difficult to talk about it, I'm embarrassed to say what my expectations are but any result other than winning the title is not satisfactory. It may sound arrogant but I think my career supports that. I play to stay at the highest levels and try to write new pages in the history of sport, winning Paris is always important. Those are my goals, but I have to lower my expectations. In any case I have to look at it day after day and in this way I will be able to have the necessary strength to reach the final. Several things have happened in the last few months but I don't want to talk about it, I don't want to open Pandora's Box. I'm just trying to focus on tennis and everything that happened is in the past," he explained.

Wawrinka defeats Murray, Moutet upsets Jarry

In the marquee matchup of the day, Stan Wawrinka has defeated Andy Murray in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.

Elsewhere, French native Corentin Moutet has upset 16th-ranked Nicolas Jarry 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0, much to the delight of the home fans at Roland Garros. And American Sebastian Korda has beaten Harold Mayot 6-2, 7-6(4), 6-4, while Kei Nishikori has eliminated Gabriel Diallo in five sets after surrendering a 2-0 lead.

Finally, American qualifier Katie Volynets has just closed out a straight-sets victory over Aleksandra Krunic.

As for live scores:

  • Jule Niemeier is leading Wang Xiyu 4-1 in their decisive third set
  • Daniel Altmaier is leading Laslo Djere two sets to one but is trailing in the fourth set 3-1
  • Terence Atmane is similarly leading Sebastian Ofner two sets to one but trailing in the fourth set 5-1

Incroyable!

Corentin Moutet, we love you — but you aren't exactly known for your mental fortitude. Until now?

Nicolas Jarry took the third set on a rollicking Simonne-Mathieu, and it looked as if Moutet's momentum might stall.

It wasn't to be. Moutet broke with some stunning tennis to take a 2-0 lead, and even a highly contentious line call in his following service game didn't distract him.

He moves 3-0 ahead in the fourth set, and is three games away from what would be a typically flamboyant — but strong — victory

Andy Murray will have to do it the hard way

He's two sets down to old rival Stan Wawrinka. You can follow live coverage of Wawrinka vs Murray from The Athletic at our dedicated blog.

A shock in the women's draw

World No 26 Barbora Krejcikova is out in the first round, going down to Viktorija Golubic, who is ranked 48 places below her at No 74.

World No 88 Martina Trevisan is also in danger of suffering a defeat to a lower-ranked player, down a set and a break to world No 125 Olga Danilović.

Elsewhere, Nicolas Jarry is one game away from taking the third set against Corentin Moutet, and Kei Nishikori quickly dropped two sets to Gabriel Diallo, with that match going to a fifth. Nishikori has the best win percentage of any player on the ATP tour in five-set matches, but he's struggling physically and may not be able to endure another.

Moutet watch: underarm serve reappears

0-3, 40-40 is not the time most players would pull out an underarm serve, but most players aren't Corentin Moutet.

He stops the rot to go 1-3, though Nicolas Jarry then hits one of the most remarkable overhead blind-fluke shots I have ever seen to go 15-0 up in the next game

You can't take your eyes off this one.

Oh my word! Ballkid drama!

Nicolas Jarry is already having a bad day. He doesn't need a ballkid running into him at full pelt and knocking him to the dirt, coating his back in red brick dust and leaving him in a heap.

Well, sorry Nicolas: that's exactly what has happened.

Korda's procession turning into a grind

After two sets, it looked as though highly rated Sebastian Korda would stroll past Harold Mayot of France.

Well, Mayot said "non." and has taken the third set to 4-4.

Elsewhere, Gabriel Diallo has nicked a set off Kei Nishikori, Daniel Altamaier is a set and a break up on Laslo Djere, and Terence Atmane leads Sebastian Ofner.

In the women's draw, Tamara Zidansek leads Alison van Uytvanck; Barbora Krejcikova is a set up on Viktorija Golubic; and Olga Danilović leads Martina Trevisan 4-1.

Moutet? He's broken Jarry again to lead 4-1.

Corentin Moutet is loving it in Paris

We told you to expect fireworks, and boy, they are exploding. Underarm serves, a hostile crowd, a sunken court — Corentin Moutet vs Nicolas Jarry was always going to be spectacular, and Moutet is absolutely feeding off it. He's up 6-2 and the crowd are more than playing their part.

Jarry, dare I say it, looks completely rattled.

Scores update

Two matches have completed in past half hour:

  • Chloe Paquet clinched a home victory over Russian Diana Shnaider, 6-3, 6-1.
  • Denmark's Clara Tauson beat Germany's Tatjana Maria 6-2, 6-3.

Get ready for fireworks on Court Simonne-Mathieu

Simonne-Mathieu is perhaps the most idyllic court at Roland Garros, sunken behind a greenhouse that snakes around the perimeter.

It can also be a bear pit, and that's what Chile's Nicolas Jarry probably has to expect tonight against Corentin Moutet.

This encounter is already likely to be combustible: Jarry reached the final in Rome with a seriously impressive run, while Moutet has already been part of the wildest match of 2024 so far .

But when they played on Jarry's turf in Santiago in March, the fans were on Moutet's case — too much, according to his coach, Petar Popovic. Popovic has discussed that meeting in the run-up to this one, and, well, he isn't exactly calming things down. Speaking to Sasa Ozmo at Tennis Majors , he said:

"All in all – Sunday, he (Jarry) is fu**ed! He made his own bed. We won that match in Santiago, but we were so disgusted with everything that we even had a conversation: ’When he comes to Paris, there will be hell waiting’. And I really hope that the hell will await, so that Jarry grows sick of tennis at least for a few weeks."

Gasquet has done it!

Gasquet has done it!

After 33 games, the 34th sees a first break of serve, and Richard Gasquet moves in to the second round at his home Grand Slam.

As gruelling a straight-sets victory as they come, but he, and the crowd on Suzanne Lenglen, aren't going to mind one bit.

Around the grounds as the sun goes down on day one at Roland Garros

With Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka soon to face off in the night session on Philippe Chatrier, let's take a look around the courts in Paris. Don't forget that The Athletic has live coverage dedicated to that first-round barnstomer...

  • After 32 games, Court Suzanne Lenglen still hasn't seen a break of serve, but they won't mind: home favourite Richard Gasquet is up two sets and 4-4 against Borna Coric of Croatia.
  • Kei Nishikori leads Gabriel Diallo 7-5, 3-3 with proceedings on serve in the second.
  • In-form Chilean Alejandro Tabilo is serving for a two-set lead over Belgium's Zizou Bergs.
  • American Sebastian Korda is rather spoiling things against Frenchman Harold Mayot, up a double break with a 4-1 lead.
  • Fabian Marozsan of Hungary leads Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin with their first set ending 6-2.
  • Wang Xiyu and Bai Zhuoxuan of China are in a tight battle, with the former leading by a set but currently serving to stay in the second.
  • Chloe Paquet is closing in on a home victory over Russian Diana Shnaider, leading 6-3, 5-1.
  • Clara Tauson is similarly close to victory, with the Dane leading Germany's Tatjana Maria 6-2, 4-3.

Kei Nishikori is back in Paris

Three-time Roland Garros quarter-finalist Kei Nishikori is here, and he's made a good start against Canada's world No 129 Gabriel Diallo, to move up 7-5 and take a one-set lead.

Home pressure — and ranking — tell for Caroline Garcia

For a while there, it looked as if smiling assassin Eva Lys was going to wreck Philippe Chatrier's world and take out their woman, Caroline Garcia.

She won the first set with a display of controlled aggression, and pushed Garcia's serve hard in the second, aided by some flashing misses from the French player, but eventually the gulf in class told.

Garcia wins 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, and moves on to face Sofia Kenin in a pretty heavyweight clash for a second-round contest.

What's happening around the courts?

Alexandre Muller, who raced to the first set, 6-4 against Luca Nardi of Italy, is 5-1 up in the second too.

Alejandro Tabilo, the Chilean, is 6-3, 2-1 up on the magnificently named Belgian Zizou Bergs, with Kei Nishikori and Gabriel Diallo locked at deuce at 5-4 to Diallo on serve in the first set.

In the women's singles, French favourite Caroline Garcia is a break up on Eva Lys in the decider, with Lys serving to make it 3-4. Katerina Siniakova beat Dalma Galfi 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) earlier.

Four games have started recently:

  • Chloe Paquet 3-2 Diana Shnaider
  • Rebecca Sramkova 6-7, 4-5 Amanda Anisimova
  • Wang Xiyu 6-5 Zhuoxian Bai
  • Tatjana Maria 2-3 Clara Tauson

Gasquet two sets up!

Gasquet two sets up!

Not so much to smile about for Borna Coric, who has just gone two sets down against home favourite Richard Gasquet (that's Ree-shard Gass-kay).

Gasquet took the second set, like the first, in a tie-break, 7-2 after 7-5 in the first.

Rafael Nadal vs Alexander Zverev preview

Rafael Nadal vs Alexander Zverev preview

Officially, the French Open started today. Fans streamed through the gates, packing Roland Garros, lining up for crepes and champagne and Aperol spritzes.

Grand slam champions played — Alcaraz, Osaka, Ostapenko — and came away with victories, even Osaka, who nearly gave away her match twice, squandering a 4-0 lead in the third set before beating Lucia Bronzetti 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. The defending champion, Novak Djokovic arrived.

And yet it all felt like a prelude, a kind of overture before the real business of the competition takes place,. Yesterday afternoon, the lines were 40-deep to get into Court Suzanne Lenglen , before the tournament had begun in earnest.

Why? Because Rafael Nadal was practising there. Below, Matthew Futterman previews his first-round match against Alexander Zverev. Don't miss it.

Jesper De Jong wins it!

A superb winner, Draper can do nothing about it, and he's into the second round. His prize: A clash with Carlos Alcaraz.

De Jong drops to his back in sheer relief and exhaustion.

Fair play, he's been really good. Jack Draper slinks off court frustratedly.

Caroline Garcia finally makes it count against Eva Lys, having been broken at 5-4 when serving for the second set.
