If you need Safari on your Linux PC, you’ll be happy to know that it is possible to install it. In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how you can set up Apple Safari on Linux.

Before we begin

Apple no longer supports Safari on the Windows platform. The oldest release of the browser for Windows is version 5 from 2010. However, this version runs on Linux, and you’ll be able to run it in Wine.

However, before attempting to install it, understand that this is an older release of Safari. You may run into unique issues using Safari that cannot be foreseen.

Installing Wine on Linux

You will need to install the latest version of Wine on your Linux PC to run Safari on your system. Thankfully, Wine is widely used and available on every Linux operating system out there.

To install Wine on Linux, start by opening up a terminal window. You can open up a terminal window on the Linux desktop by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Or, search for “Terminal” in the app menu and launch it that way.

With the terminal app open and ready to use, Wine is ready to install. Follow the installation instructions outlined below to get the app working on your computer.

To install Wine on Ubuntu, you’ll want to use the following apt install command below.

After entering the command above, Ubuntu will ask for your password. Enter it to set up the Wine64 package on your computer.

Those looking to get Wine working on Debian 11, Debian 10, or Debian Sid should use the apt-get install command below to set up the “wine64” package.

Upon entering the command above, Debian will ask you for a password. Enter your user account password into the terminal. Then, press the Enter key to submit it and install Wine.

Arch Linux users will always have access to the latest Wine Binaries thanks to Arch’s quick updates. To install the latest version of Wine on your Arch Linux PC, use the following pacman -S command.

Once you enter the command above, Arch will ask you for a password. Enter it to install the latest release of Wine.

If you’re a Fedora Linux user, you’ll be able to get a new version of Wine working on your computer using the following dnf install command in a terminal window.

sudo dnf install wine

When the command above is entered, Fedora will ask you for a password so it can install Wine. Use the keyboard and enter your password.

Need to get the latest release of Wine working on your OpenSUSE Linux system? Enter the following zypper install command in the terminal window.

With the command entered above, OpenSUSE will ask for a password. Using the keyboard, enter your user account password to get Wine.

Start by opening up a terminal window to run Apple Safari on Linux. You can open up a terminal window on the Linux desktop by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Or, search for “Terminal” in the app menu.

With the terminal window open and ready to use, follow the step-by-step instructions below to run Apple Safari on your Linux PC.

Step 1: First, use the wget download command to download the Safari 5 windows installer EXE to your Linux PC. This installer EXE makes it possible to install Safari in Wine on Linux.

Step 2: After downloading the software to your computer, use the wine command to start up the installation wizard.

Note: if you have issues using the Safari EXE, you may want to run wine64 instead of the wine command below.

Step 3: With the SafariSetup.exe wizard open, you will see “Welcome to the Safari Installer”. Read the brief that the wizard shows. When you’ve finished reading it, find the “Next” button and click on it with the mouse.

Step 4: Upon selecting the “Next” button, you’ll see the Apple Safari License Agreement. Select the “I accept the terms in the license agreement,” and select the “Next” button to continue to the next page in the installer.

Step 5: Following the license agreement, you’ll see various boxes checked. If you wish for Safari to be the default browser on Linux, leave the boxes checked. Otherwise, uncheck everything.

Step 6: On the next page, you’ll need to tell the Safari wizard where to install the software. Leave it as default, or, if you’re an expert, browse for a place to install it. Then, finish the installation.

Once the installation is complete, Safari will be ready to run on Linux.

Installing Apple’s Safari Web Browser in Ubuntu Linux

While Apple may be pushing Safari on Windows , the company has historically ignored Linux users. Fortunately, thanks to WINE , which allows you to run Windows applications without installing Windows, it's not too difficult to get Safari running in Linux.

The Ubuntu Unleashed blog recently posted instructions on how to install Safari using WINE on Ubuntu , but with a few tweaks, you should be able to get it running on just about any Linux distribution. The instructions even include installing the Flash plugin for Safari in WINE.

Of course if you aren't looking for the Apple-specific front-end, WebKit, the engine that powers Safari, is also used in Konqueror. ( Update: As Douglas Greenshields points out in the comments below, WebKit is actually based on KHTML (Konqueror's web browser), and it is not technically part of Konqueror .)

However, if it's the Safari interface you're after, WINE is your answer. The only real dependency, aside from WINE, is that you install Microsoft's Core Fonts, but you'll need them for just about any application running under WINE.

I tested the install out of curiosity and it worked without a hitch. As you can see in the screenshot above, I've got the Windows version of Safari running in Ubuntu and the Flash plugin works just fine. The main menu items are a little bit off, but it's still usable and surprisingly snappy.

Is it possible to install Safari on Ubuntu 14.04?

I would like to debug a browser compatibility issue with Safari. I don't have a Mac and Windows. I am interested if its still possible to install Safari on Ubuntu 14.04. I've tried using Wine 1.6.2 by installing the last version of Safari that works with Windows. While it installs, it does not launch.

  • I'm afraid I haven't found anything that works reliably. I tried both @abdulla-nilam's WineTricks answer, and also PlayOnLinux. The latter gave better instructions but both ended up with the same result: An old version of Safari that crashes on half the pages I tried loading. –  Michael Scheper Nov 4, 2016 at 23:16

Safari uses webkit as web browser engine. You can use epiphany-browser which also uses webkit engine for debugging and checking the compatibility:

  • 3 Thanks, @5chdn. To clarify, we need to run apt-get install winetricks and then winetricks , from the command line, to see the dialogues above. For me, it installed Safari 5.0, which blew up the first time I tried running it, but worked the second time. Unfortunately, my keyboard remappings don't work in it, but this is good enough. –  Michael Scheper Nov 4, 2016 at 22:51
  • 1 ... actually, it crashes on half the pages I try to load. I might need to borrow a Mac from somewhere. –  Michael Scheper Nov 4, 2016 at 22:55
  • Note, that the latest supported Safari version for Windows (and wine) is 5.1, while we are at v13 since sept. 2019 –  rubo77 Apr 22, 2020 at 4:30

StackOverflow has some answers but I am trying to find out if they're up-to-date. EDIT: yea, they're out of date. Safari on Windows ended when Safari 6 started. Maybe it can be done legally or ethically in virtualbox.

(The remainder is wrong if you want OSX >=6.0) Basically, install Wine and possibly playonlinux, but I don't know if you can get Safari 9. So far I just found out you can get Safari 5. Here's a page of advice without a date on it.

Maybe one of these will work! Haven't tried it yet ....

  • 1 Note that using Wine won't help - Safari for Windows has been dead for over a year, and I mean dead with no security updates or support... they stopped at Safari 5 or 6 I believe... so you lose a lot of features and support that you probably seek –  Thomas Ward ♦ Dec 6, 2015 at 3:59
  • I've been trying to find an OSX virtualbox for a very long time. ☹ Even Microsoft has worked out that if they want people to develop sites for their stupid browser, they need to make it free and easy to test on. No wonder so few of my clients care about Safari anymore. –  Michael Scheper Nov 4, 2016 at 23:13

Apple Safari Installation in Ubuntu

Firstly install PlayOnLinux, which allow easy installation of Safari in Ubuntu. PlayOnLinux also enables the easy installation of several games and application designed to run with Microsoft Windows.

PlayOnLinux

Start PlayOnLinux Start PlayOnLinux in the shell console and follow start up the instructions

Install Safari from inside PlayOnLinux

Easy methods for installing Safari on Linux

browserSafari

How to easy install Safari on Linux? When comparing the main online browsers, Apple’s Safari probably includes capabilities that suit your needs. Nevertheless, despite its popularity, Safari has never been formally published for Linux, which is peculiar given that UNIX is a shared technology between Linux and macOS.

The best part is that there are various ways to run Safari on Linux whether you’re a Linux user or web developer who has to offer support for the Safari browser. Despite having these limitations, Safari 5 still includes all the features you require for web browsing. WINE is used to install Safari on Linux. To install Safari on Linux, there are two potential workarounds: Use WINE by itself or in conjunction with PlayOnLinux to give WINE with a graphical user interface (UI).

After completing this guide, you will also have simple access to other applications that are not currently operating on Linux because you may install a variety of additional Windows programs using WINE and PlayOnLinux in addition to Safari.

How to set up WINE One of the most well-known Linux packages is WINE, which can be found in the majority of package managers and software stores. Using the following command (for 32-bit PCs), you can install WINE in Ubuntu (or an Ubuntu-based distribution):

wine32 sudo apt install or (on 64-bit systems):

wine64 – sudo apt install One thing to keep in mind is that Ubuntu’s WINE version is fairly ancient. Do the following if you want the most recent stable version of WINE:

Add WINE key first.

-nc wget sudo apt-key https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key insert winehq.key Add the archive, too.

deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/eoan main, sudo apt-add-repository

The command listed above is for Ubuntu 19.10 (eoan). Change the name to reflect the Ubuntu version you are using (such as “bionic,” “xenial,” etc.)

System upgrades

apt update 4 with sudo. Install WINE’s stable version lastly.

Installing WineHQ-Stable with sudo apt install —install-recommends Now WINE is set up.

Installing WINE and Safari Open a Terminal window and enter the following commands before downloading Safari:

cd to “/build/safari” and type “mkdir -p”

You can now use the wget command to download Safari:

wget SafariSetup.exe at http://appldnld.apple.com/Safari5/041-5487.20120509.INU8B When the download is finished, use the following command to start Safari Setup:

SafariSetup.exe for wine You could be asked to download some more software at this point, such Mono or Gecko. Click Install when requested, then watch as the packages download.

Safari Installer will start up immediately after you have all the required software.

The Safari Installer will start up immediately. The web browser will be installed after you have finished the required steps, and you can begin using Safari on Linux. Using PlayOnLinux, install Safari Since WINE does not have the best user interface, you might want to install PlayOnLinux instead, which offers a graphical user interface for the most fundamental WINE code.

You can use the following command to install PlayOnLinux:

install playonlinux with sudo PlayOnLinux is now accessible from the Applications menu.

Select Install a software from the PlayOnLinux window. Choose Install a program In the search box, type Safari. In the search box, type “Safari” Select the web browser when it displays, then click Install. Read the Disclaimer section, and then click Next if you agree (2 times). Your pc will now download Safari.

Safari is not natively available for Linux, but you can still install it by using a compatibility layer called Wine. This allows you to run Windows applications on Linux. Here’s how to install Safari on Linux with Wine:

Step 1: Download and Install Wine

The first step is to download and install Wine. In most cases, you can find Wine in the software repositories of your Linux distribution. Open up your terminal and type the following command:

sudo apt-get install wine

Step 2: Download Safari for Windows

Next, you need to download Safari for Windows from the official Apple website. Visit the official page of Apple and head for the download section. Look for the suitable download for Windows OS of Safari and download it.

Step 3: Install Safari on Linux

Once you have downloaded Safari, navigate to your downloads folder and find the Safari installation file. Right-click on it and select “Open With Wine Windows Program Loader”. This will automatically trigger Wine to run and install Safari on your Linux machine.

Note: During the installation process, Wine might ask you to install additional Windows components. You should install them to ensure Safari runs smoothly on your Linux machine.

Step 4: Run Safari on Linux

Once you have installed Safari on Linux, you can launch it by finding it in the programs menu of Wine. Or, you can use the command line to launch Safari using the following command:

wine “C:\Program Files\Safari\Safari.exe”

It’s important to note that the user experience with Safari on Linux might differ from what you are used to on a Mac or Windows. Additionally, running Safari on Linux, via Wine, can take up some resources which can affect the performance of the system.

In conclusion, installing Safari on Linux is possible via a compatibility layer called Wine. After completing the above-mentioned steps, you can access the excellent features of Safari on Linux, however, you must keep in mind that it is not an official method and that the performance may differ.

How to use Apple Safari on Linux

Today, in this article, we show you how to use Apple Safari on Linux . One of the most used and secure browsers, Safari is made to let you browse the internet with the highest level of privacy protection. For Linux, this browser has not yet been formally released. While Safari has not yet been made available for the Linux OS, we feel that both the Linux OS and macOS have a long history with UNIX. The good news is that there is a guide which can help you use Safari on your Linux computer if you are a Linux user or web developer who wants Safari browser support.

Macintosh and Windows operating systems, as well as the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad all support Apple Safari as their default browser. Based on the idea that the best browser is one that “gets out of your way and lets you just enjoy the web”, Safari was created. The WebKit engine, which is at the heart of Apple’s Safari browser, handles tasks such as displaying visuals, rendering fonts, running Javascript, and choosing the page layout.

Future iterations of Safari are anticipated to use Apple’s WebKit2 engine. This engine has a split process architecture that is integrated directly into the framework, allowing web browser processes to run as separate processes in the operating system for greater stability and security. There are basically two distinct methods to install Safari on Linux. Use PlayOnLinux, which provides a graphical user interface (UI) for WINE, or WINE (the compatibility layer, not the drink). Below are the steps to run Apple Safari on Linux.

Steps to Run Apple Safari on Linux

To start using Apple Safari on Linux, launch a terminal window. When hitting the keys Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard, you can launch a terminal window on the Linux desktop. Alternatively, look under “Terminal” in the application menu. To use Apple Safari on your Linux computer, follow the step-by-step instructions below with the terminal window open and ready to use.

Step 1: First, use the wget download command to download Windows Safari 5 installer EXE to your Linux PC. This installer EXE makes it possible to install Safari under Wine on Linux.

wget http://appldnld.apple.com/Safari5/041-5487.20120509.INU8B/SafariSetup.exe

Step 2: After downloading the software to your computer, use the wine command to start up the installation wizard.

wine SafariSetup.exe

Step 3: As Safari.exe Setup Wizard open, you will see “ Welcome to the Safari installer ”. Read the summary that the wizard shows. When you finish reading it, find the “ Next ” button and click on it with the mouse.

Step 4: By selecting the “ Next ” button, you will see the Apple Safari License Agreement. Select the “ I accept the terms of the license agreement ” and select the option “ Next ” button to continue to the next page in the installer.

Step 5: following the license agreement, you will see several checked boxes. If you want Safari to be the default browser on Linux , leave the boxes checked. Otherwise, uncheck everything.

Step 6: On the next page, you will need to tell the Safari Assistant where to install the software. Leave it as the default or, if you are an expert, look for a place to install it. Then finish the installation.

Final Words

We hope you like our article about how to run Apple Safari on Linux. Software and applications developed by Apple are known to work well with Apple hardware. Safari is the same way. The appropriate operating systems and hardware requirements were taken into account when the company created this web browser. Automatically works fine on Mac computers, iPhones and iPads.

The best browser for Linux, Windows and Mac isn’t Google Chrome in 2021

Your email has been sent

Image of Jack Wallen

A couple of months ago, I finally left Opera as my default web browser on Linux. That was a hard sell because the Opera Workspaces feature was something I didn’t think I could leave behind. And yet, the load the Opera web browser placed on my computer (especially when using Google Docs) was too big an issue to ignore. I’d be working along, minding my own business, when all of a sudden the Opera browser would bring the desktop to a grinding halt.

Productivity, thy name is memory leak!

Why I stoped using Safari as the default browser on macOS

At that point, I was using two different web browsers as my defaults on Linux and macOS, and I was certain Safari would remain as the go-to browser on the Mac side of things. But then I continued using that default web browser on Linux and, day after day, grew more impressed with its performance and simplicity. And then, things took a turn for the worse on Safari. Like with Opera, when working with a longer document in Google Docs, Safari would pop up a warning saying that the site was using too much memory. No matter what I did with Safari that behavior would not stop.

Finally, I walked away from Apple Safari to make the same web browser I used on Linux my default on macOS. This was a choice I haven’t regretted for a second.

SEE: 20 good habits network administrators need–and 10 habits to break (free PDF) (TechRepublic)

That’s not to say I found myself using only one web browser–oh, no… if it was only so simple. You see, there are still sites I must use that, for whatever reason, were designed with Google Chrome in mind. And that’s a problem. Why? Because the Chrome browser has become unreliable on so many levels. On Linux, I’ve had Chrome lock up the desktop on too many occasions. On the Mac operating system, Chrome drains the battery faster than any other application with the exception of Final Cut Pro when rendering video.

Why choosing the best browser for your workflow is so difficult

This issue is complicated. Why? First and foremost, the browser is one tool everyone uses. No matter your platform, you depend on a web browser. I would go so far as to say 90% of the work and entertainment you undertake on any computing device connected to the Internet is via a web browser. That means those ubiquitous applications have to pull a tremendous load. For the most part, they all do it fairly well. Every web browser I’ve ever used renders sites well, though some better than others. So what’s the problem? Why would anyone have an issue either selecting the web browser that is truly best for their use case or migrating to a different browser altogether?

In a word: familiarity.

We all have our workflow. Many of us have tuned our workflow to a specific web browser’s way of doing things. Truth be told, on the surface, the differences between web browsers aren’t that great. Every web browser offers much of the same standard features:

  • Configuration options
  • Privacy features

SEE: 5 programming languages application solutions developers should learn (free PDF) (TechRepublic)

The biggest difference is how each web browser implements these features. That’s on the surface… where the users dwell. It’s when you dig a bit deeper that you find those web browsers do start to differ. Take, for instance, the fact that there are five active web browser rendering engines:

  • WebKit: Safari browser
  • Blink: Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers such as Microsoft Edge browser, Opera browser, Brave browser and Vivaldi browser
  • Gecko: Firefox browser
  • Goanna: Pale Moon and Basilisk browsers
  • Flow: Flow browser

Of all the web browsers I’ve used, those based on the WebKit and Blink rendering engines seem to have the biggest problems with longer documents on Google Drive. And for me, that’s a big issue because I work in Google Drive about seven to nine hours a day. The fact that the Blink web browser rendering engine has the biggest issue with Google Drive should come as a shock, seeing as how both were created and are maintained by Google.

And the best browser in 2021 winner is… Firefox

Since my switch to Firefox on Linux and macOS, I’ve not had a single problem with memory issues. And, much to my surprise, Firefox is no longer a battery vampire on macOS. Prior to my M1 MacBook Pro , Firefox drained the very will to live from my MacBook Pro 2016 battery. When using Firefox, I was lucky to get two to three hours of battery life. With the M1 MacBook Pro and Firefox 89 , battery life is just as good as it is when using Safari.

Outside of performance, rendering and battery life, I absolutely love what Mozilla has done to the Firefox interface. Gone is the clutter and bloat–now, Firefox is a sleek and almost minimalist web browser that outperforms every browser on my desktop and laptop. I’ve even migrated my Android default to Firefox and have found it to be just as impressive a mobile browser as it is on the desktop.

The one hiccup to my master plan is the fact that (as I mentioned earlier) there are still sites that do not function well with any browser other than Google Chrome. That is dumbfounding. Every time I see a website refuse to function in a particular browser, I instantly assume Doc Brown has pulled up in the DeLorean and has his sights set on 2001. But this is not the early 2000s, nor is it the browser wars of old. Even so, the environment does seem ripe for a headlong clash between Firefox and Chrome. And although Google Chrome has a massive advantage in market share (at the moment Chrome has a 67% market share over the competition ), the current state of performance doesn’t reflect that popularity.

If I had to take a guess, I’d say Google is just lucky the average user either doesn’t like change or doesn’t even realize there are alternative browsers available. If you happen to fall into that category, I highly suggest you install Firefox and see if you don’t find yourself setting it as the default browser on all of your devices and platforms.

What’s your pick for the best browser in 2021?

Which browser do you think is tops for Linux, Windows and Mac? Share your feedback in the article discussion.

How to Run Mac Apps on Linux

Alexander Fox

macOS and Linux share a common heritage. Unfortunately, that does not mean applications can smoothly transition between the operating systems. To run Mac apps on Linux, you’ll need some sort of virtual machine or translation layer.

Run a macOS Virtual Machine (All Apps)

The most reliable way to run Mac apps on Linux is through a virtual machine. With a free, open-source hypervisor application like VirtualBox, you can run macOS on a virtual device on your Linux machine. A properly-installed virtualized macOS environment will run all macOS apps without issue.

speed up virtual machine tips

Virtualizing a desktop like this does require significant RAM, so it may not run smoothly on low-resource devices. For machines with the technical specs, virtualizing an operating systems through a VirtualBox virtual machine is the best option.

Using the Darling Translation Layer (CLI Only)

You can also run a translation layer called Darling . This works like WINE, which creates a Windows-to-Linux translation environment that allows you to run some Windows applications on Linux systems. Darling tries to accomplish the same goal between macOS and Linux. Because macOS and Linux both share the same UNIX-style base, Darling is less resource-intensive than WINE, producing better results in more circumstances.

For the time being, Darling can only work with very simple GUI apps and several command-line apps. While GUI app support is a goal for the project, the feature hasn’t yet been implemented. Basically, you can run a macOS shell in Terminal reliably and may or may not be able to run other apps effectively.

It also contains an enormous amount of code, requiring about 12 gigabytes of disk space after building. It’s essentially duplicating the functionality of the macOS operating system. So, if you worry about remote executables corrupting your system, you might want to avoid a package of this size.

Building and Installing Darling

1. Follow the installation instructions to download the correct dependencies for your Linux distro from the Darling Install page. Depending on your distro, you may need to run a lengthy command.

For example, for Ubuntu, run the following Terminal command to download Darling’s dependencies:

2. Clone Darling’s git depository to your local machine:

Run Macos Program Linux Git Clone Darling

3. Change the directory into the Darling clone:

4. Make and build the darling directory:

5. Configure the build with cmake:

6. Build Darling:

The build process may take longer than one hour, depending on your machine’s resources.

7. Install Darling:

8. Build Darling’s kernal module darling_mach:

9. Install darling_mach:

Running macOS Applications on Linux with Darling

To access the darling subsystem, run darling shell . This uses the darling command prefix to launch a macOS shell environment:

Run Macos Program Linux Load Darling Shell

Once inside the darling shell, you can run commands as if you were on a macOS system. All program installation happens within the darling shell. Running the commands without connecting to Darling won’t work.

To attempt to run a macOS program, first download the appropriate files. You’ll want to obtain a .dmg or .pkg on your Linux machine. If you want to run an app from the Mac App Store, copy the .app file to “/Applications/” on your Linux machine then launching it through Darling’s shell commands.

Install from DMG

To install a program from a .dmg, mount it with hdiutil within Darling:

Copy the application to your local storage:

Run through Darling:

Install from PKG

To install a program from pkg, use installer within Darling:

Uniquely to Darling, .pkgs can be uninstalled using the uninstaller companion command.

Once installed, run through Darling:

Darling works well with command line programs, but will hopefully eventually support GUI applications.

Access your iPhone on Linux with this open source tool

How to turn a Raspberry Pi into an eBook server

Opensource.com

The iPhone and iPad aren't by any means open source, but they're popular devices. Many people who own an iOS device also happen to use a lot of open source, including Linux. Users of Windows and macOS can communicate with an iOS device by using software provided by Apple, but Apple doesn't support Linux users. Open source programmers came to the rescue back in 2007 (just a year after the iPhone's release) with Libimobiledevice (then called libiphone), a cross-platform solution for communicating with iOS. It runs on Linux, Android, Arm systems such as the Raspberry Pi, Windows, and even macOS.

Libimobiledevice is written in C and uses native protocols to communicate with services running on iOS devices. It doesn't require any libraries from Apple, so it's fully free and open source.

Libimobiledevice is an object-oriented API, and there are a number of terminal utilities that come bundled with it for your convenience. The library supports Apple's earliest iOS devices all the way up to its latest models. This is the result of years of research and development. Applications in the project include usbmuxd , ideviceinstaller , idevicerestore , ifuse , libusbmuxd , libplist , libirecovery , and libideviceactivation .

Install Libimobiledevice on Linux

On Linux, you may already have libimobiledevice installed by default. You can find out through your package manager or app store, or by running one of the commands included in the project:

You can install libimobiledevice using your package manager. For instance, on Fedora or CentOS:

On Debian and Ubuntu:

Alternatively, you can download and install libimobiledevice from source code.

Connecting your device

Once you have the required packages installed, connect your iOS device to your computer.

Make a directory as a mount point for your iOS device.

Next, mount the device:

Your device prompts you to trust the computer you're using to access it.

The folder I usually access most frequently is DCIM , where my iPhone photos are stored. Sometimes I use these photos in articles I write, and sometimes there are photos I want to enhance with open source applications like Gimp. Having direct access to the images instead of emailing them to myself is one of the benefits of using the Libimobiledevice utilities. I can copy any of these folders to my Linux computer. I can create folders on the iPhone and delete them too.

Martin Szulecki is the lead developer for the project. The project is looking for developers to add to their community . Libimobiledevice can change the way you use your peripherals, regardless of what platform you're on. It's another win for open source, which means it's a win for everyone.

The Linux users' guide to Mac OS X

Similarities and differences between the two systems explained

Time Machine

  • Intro to OS X for Linux users
  • The command line, GUI and filesystems
  • Mac on Linux and Linux on Mac

Linux is fantastic, don't get us wrong, but Apple 's kit can also be appealing – especially its range of Apple laptops . But if the thought of getting to know OS X puts you off, fear not: there's a lot of common ground between Mac and Linux that isn't immediately obvious.

For starters, you may already know that under the hood Mac OS X is BSD Unix-based. This means you can fire up a terminal window and get your fingers into the operating system via the command line in much the same way that you can with Linux.

There's also an increasing amount of Linux software ported to Mac. We've taken a look into some of the similarities and differences between Macs and Linux to help if you're thinking of becoming a multi-OS household.

Getting started with OS X

Fire up a Mac OS X machine, take a look at the desktop and, aside from the layer of gloss, the first differences you're likely to notice coming from a Linux environment are the Dock and the menu bar.

Let's deal with the latter first – you see, instead of the OS having a menu bar for system tasks and each application having its own individual bar within its window, in OS X there's a single menu bar at the top of the screen that alternates between the two. The right-hand side of the bar contains the date, information on your battery (where applicable), a wireless button, and various other configurable options.

Meanwhile, the left-hand side holds the application menu of whichever program has your focus, or Finder if none has. As you move between programs, this menu bar will change accordingly. The Apple menu, accessed via the little Apple logo on the far left, has a basic list of system operations and information.

For more of these options, you need to open Finder, which enables you to navigate through files and your computer.

Great minds think alike

The Spotlight tool on the far-right – the magnifying glass icon – enables you to search both filenames and the contents of files for anything you want, which makes it roughly equivalent to Beagle on Linux.

Finally, there's the Dock at the bottom (by default), where you can shove a selection of frequently used apps, files and directories for easy access. You can also set it to hide itself automatically so it's not in the way, which is particularly useful if you're on a laptop with more limited screen space.

Finder

FINDER: The Mac desktop with a Finder window open, the Dock at the bottom and the all-purpose menu bar at the top of the screen

If you try this out and like it, or like the idea and want to give it a go on Linux, there are a few Dock-a-likes available. Avant Window Navigator is probably the most popular, but there are other options available as well.

  • Hack the OS X Dock to make it less ugly

Applications

Applications in OS X are handled pretty differently to Linux

By default, they're kept in the /Applications directory, but you can place them anywhere you like, because each application is an appname.app directory that masquerades as a single file in Finder. If you want to look inside that directory, you'll need to go to the Terminal, type cd/Applications/appname.app and take it from there.

Firefox

WEBKIT: Apple's Safari browser uses WebKit, a HTML engine based on the KDE project's own KHTML

The idea is that OS X applications should all be self-contained: all the application data is kept in that one file, rather than being scattered in various places about the system. However, there is some app-related data that's kept elsewhere: there's /Library/ for system-wide information and /Library for individual data.

In essence, if it's something that a user might want to change – themes, plugins and so on – then you'll find it in one of the Library locations. You can also get at the contents of the app folder using the Show Package Contents option in the right-click (or Ctrl+click if you're using a single-button mouse) context menu.

Starting up daemons is no more complicated than it is in Linux, but the process is slightly different. Some can be started from the appropriate System Preferences tab , or alternatively there's StartupItems and launchd . Most Unixlike daemons can be run via one of these, but they work differently, so you'll need to rewrite (or find) appropriate start scripts. In theory, you should use StartupItems in OS X 10.3 or earlier and launchd for 10.4 onwards, but launchd can be fussy, so you might have to mix the two.

If you're running Fink or MacPorts, your downloaded apps and packages live in either /sw or /opt/local , respectively. The setup process for each should add the appropriate bin directories to your $PATH , and this all works much the same as in Linux. Check your $PATH setup with the command echo $PATH if you have trouble using any Fink or MacPorts apps.

If you're running iOS 17 , Safari now comes with a translation feature baked into the browser, making it easier than ever to translate a web page on iPhone and iPad.

Once enabled, text is translated in-line on the webpage that you're viewing. It's a handy tool if you want to read websites that are written in different languages, and it's available right in the address bar in Safari.

With this in mind, here's how you can translate web pages in Safari on iPhone and iPad.

In iOS 15 and later, the ability to translate a web page's language to your native language is now a built-in part of Safari. As such, you no longer need a third-party app to translate. Here's how to use built-in language translation in Safari in iOS 14, iOS 15, and later.

  • Tap the action button on the left side of the address bar while visiting a site that you need to translate. The button looks like two A's next to each other.
  • Tap Translate to [Your Device Language] .

Translate webpages in iOS 14, showing how to tap the action button, then tap Translate to English

  • Tap Enable Translation if prompted.

Your page will then be translated into the primary language that you've set on your device. If you want to revert back to the page's original language, take the following steps.

  • Tap the translate button in the Safari address bar. It takes the place of the standard action button on the left side of the address bar.
  • Tap View Original .

The page will revert to its original language.

If you're running a version of iOS 13 or earlier on your device, then a third-party app with a translation extension is what you'll want to use. Microsoft's Translator extension is an excellent tool for the task, as it translates the web page in place when activated.

Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

Intelligent Tracking Prevention

apple safari for linux

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on-device intelligence to help prevent cross-site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click Privacy Report in the Safari menu for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.

Customisation

Putting the you in url..

Safari is more customisable than ever. Organise your tabs into Tab Groups so it’s easy to go from one interest to the next. Set a custom background image and fine-tune your browser window with your favourite features — like Reading List, Favourites, iCloud Tabs and Siri Suggestions. And third-party extensions for iPhone, iPad and Mac let you do even more with Safari, so you can browse the way you want across all your devices.

Safari Profiles allow you to separate your history, extensions, Tab Groups, favourites, cookies and more. Quickly switch between profiles for topics you create, like Personal and Work.

Web apps let you save your favourite websites to the Dock on Mac and to the Home Screen on iPhone and iPad. A simplified toolbar and separate settings give you an app-like experience.

Safari Extensions add functionality to your browser to help you explore the web the way you want. Find and add your favourite extensions in the dedicated Safari category on the App Store.

Save and organise your tabs in the way that works best for you. Name your Tab Groups, edit them and switch among them across devices. You can also share Tab Groups — making planning your next family trip or group project easier and more collaborative.

Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

apple safari for linux

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Learn more about passkeys

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

apple safari for linux

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the Internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passwords and credit card numbers, and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favourite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Designed for developers.

Deep WebKit integration between Mac hardware and macOS allows Safari to deliver the fastest performance and the longest battery life of any browser on the platform, while supporting modern web standards for rich experiences in the browser. WebKit in macOS Sonoma includes optimisations that enable even richer browsing experiences, and give developers more control over styling and layout — allowing for more engaging content.

Make Safari your default browser

Customise your start page, view your browsing privacy report, monitor your saved passwords, view your tabs across all your devices, read the safari user guide, get safari support.

Opera is a browser that has been around since 1996 and that has evolved consistently over the years to meet user needs. It has been available for Linux for a long time (except the Opera GX edition).

Even though other browsers like Chrome and Firefox are popular among internet netizens, Opera has been able to carve out its place in this ever-evolving market with its revamped offering, Opera One , that replaced the older browser.

While they offered sidebar access to ChatGPT and ChatSonic when they first launched it, they replaced it with the Aria Browser AI feature for all platforms, including Linux.

It gives users access to an AI-powered chatbot that can answer questions, generate text-based content, plan trips, and whatnot. And, with a recent press release , it appears that Aria is receiving a major upgrade.

So, let's check it out 😀

Opera One Gets a Buff: What to Expect?

a screenshot of opera browser aria browser ai image generation in action

Opera, in collaboration with Google , has introduced a new feature that allows users to generate images using prompts . It uses the Imagen 2 model on Vertex AI to achieve such functionality, which is Google's most advanced text-to-image technology.

As you can see above, I ran a prompt on my Linux system to generate a cat image on vacation. I got a very cool-looking cat vacationing at a beach, wearing sunglasses, a chique hat, and even a floral shirt!

I liked it 😺

an illustration of opera browser aria browser ai voice output feature

Alongside that, Opera has also introduced a voice output feature that will take advantage of Google's text-to-audio model to speak out responses in a “ conversational-like ” manner.

During the reveal, EVP of Partnerships at Opera, Per Wetterdal , added that:

Our companies have been cooperating for more than 20 years. We are excited to be announcing the deepening of this collaboration into the field of generative AI to further power our suite of browser AI services.

All of the above sounds great and all. But one needs to sign up for an account on Opera to use the AI features . Of course, you can use email alias tools to create an account without sharing your real email ID.

I would have preferred if it were the other way around, but it is what it is.

Want to Check it Out?

At the time of writing, only Opera One Developer version features the image generation capabilities. But I am sure that the stable builds will feature this sooner rather than later.

If you can't wait, download the latest Opera Developer build ( desktop only ) from the official website .

After you get it installed, just click on the Aria Browser AI logo on the sidebar to get started.

💬 Did you see this coming? Will you switch to Opera on Linux for this feature? Let me know below!
