Ultimate Guide: Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines Part 1

“Mayap a abak,” good morning enclosed to parentheses as Cha Guintu, one of Angeles tourism guide greeted us via text message, beginning cue of forage for eats and far more than the gastronomic episode that awaits us.

Ultimate Guide Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines

“For a year, Angeles was a ghost town. Most of the locals transferred to Manila; the entire city was covered with ash-fall, people wearing a mask for protection, rivers swallowing the land, collapsed bridges, lahar,” sudden downpour as we pass along Balibago street with the tourism officer driving our way back to the hotel. Depicting the old face of the city after the catastrophe decades ago. “Like a phoenix, rising from the ashes,” as he says.

Check out some of the cool and cheap tours you could do in Manila .

After this entire visit to Angeles City , I am still filled with wonder and inspired by how it continuously turns into a thriving city, a city that has it all – lights, eats, thrills, customs, and history.

Genghis Mongolian Grill

The first step into the front door, welcomed by the feast of bowls with veggies, meat, and spices. Aside from its Mongolian theme, my eyes were drawn to these fascinating decors around the room. Hanging kitchen utensils. No, not the ordinary use of these things. Hanging kitchen graters and colanders used as light decors! All these were designed and created by the owner/chef himself, Ryan Santos.

Spinach, mushroom, squid, carrots, so on and so forth, freedom is all yours in creating your very own Mongolian recipe. If unsure of what sauce compliments squid or chicken liver, Chef Ryan would be more willing to help you!

After the Mongolian feast, Chef Ryan and her wife dish up the specialties. Pork Buns, Genghis Chops, Cereal Prawns, Honey Cashew Fish Fillet, Korean Beef Stew, Char Kway Teow, and my ultimate pick, Khan’s Conquest! The couple is absolutely hands on with their craft that aside from preparing the meals, they even do the personal picking of ingredients from the market.

Genghis Mongolian Grill, our first toothsome dining experience in the city!

Mila’s Tokwa’t Baboy

“Simple, very simple. Calamansi, fish sauce,” owner’s plain revelation of their own and original Pork Sisig recipe. As simple as that, not even a dash of umami was mentioned. They manage to serve a finely chopped meat dish bursting with bold spices!

Aside from Sisig and their signature dish, Tokwa’t Baboy, another champion in the menu is their Paco Salad. Sweet flavored vinegar poured into these green crispy edible young fern topped with slices of salted egg, tomatoes and onions.

Mila’s Tokwa’t Baboy, without question, a perfect way to spend midday meal with family and friends.

From the well-known Filipino dishes up to the out of the ordinary recipes. Kare-Kare, Pancit, Adobong Balut, Lumpiang Gulay, Pakbet, Ginataang Kuhol and more to mention, absolutely worth every cent!

If exotic specialties fancy you as a food adventurist, better try their Adobong Kamaru (Crickets) or Balut Sisig (Fertilized Duck Egg). Actual cooking demo before food experience is a bonus!

Susie’s Cuisine

Not a fan of the traditional sticky sweet delicacies but when the feast of native signature specialties was introduced, I found my self-left open-mouthed with the desire of experiencing them all in my palate! Rice Cake, Moche, Aleya Ube, Kalame Duman, Tibok-tibok and more sweets to enjoy!

The best Pinoy dessert as featured in a news magazine television show in GMA 7 happens to be my ultimate personal pick, the Tibok-tibok! Kind of similar to Maja Blanca with a sweetish creamy soft melting taste.

A plain proof that they serve specialties with the best quality is through their exports – delicacies proudly made in the Philippines ! Susie’s Cuisine is truly the “Kakanin Queen” beyond any doubt!

Sweet treats from Teaspoon Desserts, boxes with surprise as they served Queso de Bola Cheesecake and Cashew Petit Fortunes. The latter was the most-liked treat. Angeles City Travel Guide: Things to do in Angeles City, Philippines including seeing the national flag

Angeles City City Guide: A Brief History Of Angeles City, Philippines

Angeles City is a first-class city located in the province of Pampanga, Philippines. The city has a rich history, having been inhabited by various indigenous groups and foreign settlers throughout the centuries.

Pre-Colonial Era:

Prior to the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, the area where Angeles City now stands was inhabited by the Sambal and Kapampangan tribes. The Sambal were a seafaring people who lived along the coast, while the Kapampangan were an agricultural society who lived in the interior. The Kapampangan established a settlement in the area called “Kuliat,” which means “the place where there are vines.”

Spanish Colonial Era:

In 1571, Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi arrived in the Philippines and established Spanish colonial rule. The Spanish established a town in the area that is now Angeles City and named it “Culiat.” The town was named after the Kapampangan settlement that existed there before the arrival of the Spanish.

During the Spanish colonial period, Angeles City became an important trading center due to its proximity to Manila and its access to the Pampanga River. The town grew in importance and became a center for agriculture, with crops such as rice and sugarcane being grown in the surrounding areas.

American Colonial Era:

In 1899, the Philippines came under American colonial rule after the defeat of the Spanish in the Spanish-American War. The Americans renamed Culiat to Angeles in honor of the then-governor of the Philippines, William McKinley’s wife.

During the American colonial period, Angeles City continued to develop as a commercial center, with businesses such as banks, hotels, and department stores opening up in the city. The city also became a center for the US military presence in the Philippines, with Clark Air Base being established in the nearby town of Mabalacat.

World War II:

During World War II, Angeles City was occupied by the Japanese forces, and Clark Air Base was used by the Japanese as an airfield. The city was heavily damaged during the war, with many buildings destroyed.

Post-World War II:

After the war, Angeles City was rebuilt and continued to grow as a commercial center. The city also became a popular destination for American servicemen stationed at Clark Air Base.

In 1991, the eruption of Mount Pinatubo, which is located near Angeles City, led to the closure of Clark Air Base and the evacuation of the American military personnel stationed there. The closure of the base had a significant impact on the local economy, but the city has since rebounded and has become a popular tourist destination.

Today, Angeles City is known for its vibrant nightlife, as well as its rich history and cultural heritage. The city has a number of historical landmarks and attractions, including the Holy Rosary Parish Church, the Museo ning Angeles, and the Pamintuan Mansion.

Angeles City Top Attractions and Best Places to Visit in Philippines

Though it may not have the most sterling reputation, Angeles City is nonetheless an interesting place to see as a visitor to the Philippines. Boasting a surprising number of museums and churches to balance its entertainment facilities, this place will appeal to more than just hedonists.

While Angeles City is best known for its hedonistic activities, there are still enough attractions around to interest the cultural traveller. Start at the Clark Museum , as this institution contains artifacts, film, and other exhibits which illustrate the colourful history of this part of the Philippines.

Topics covered include war history, local geography, and the story of the Mount Pinatubo volcanic eruption, which was one of the biggest of its kind in the 20th century. Some may balk at the 200 peso entrance fee, but it permits access to a 4D theatre that will bring this region’s story to life.

If the Clark Museum has only got you warmed up, learn even more about the region by checking out Museo Ning Angeles . Housed in a building dating back to the 1920s, exhibits within contain dioramas which do well at giving people a look into how life was like more than a century ago.

Other Places To Visit

From representations of local churches to the native dress of local indigenous peoples, there is a lot to take in, but be sure to plan your day so you arrive here by 4 pm between Monday and Saturday, as this institution closes at 5 pm, and is closed on Sunday.

Get even deeper into local culture by visiting the Center for Kapampangan Studies during your visit to Angeles City. Dedicated to the preservation of the language and traditions of this group of people, this small but detailed museum on the campus of Holy Angel University will fascinate and inspire you with a culture that diverges significantly from the modern Filipino way of life.

Of particular interest is the traditional alphabet of the Philippines, but take your time while you are here, as there are plenty of intriguing displays to be found here.

Finish your tour of Angeles City by dropping by Holy Rosary Parish Church . Recognized as a national historic site, it has had a checkered past since its founding in the late 19th century. While it is a lovely place of worship in the present day, the land behind it was used to execute Filipino rebels from 1896 to 1898.

During World War II, its belfry was destroyed in an air raid but was promptly repaired within a year of the incident. Be sure to catch a mass during Holy Week – there is no better time to soak up the religious life of the Philippines than at the most emotional time of year for Christians.

With free entry for ladies, new DJs spinning all the time, and cabanas on the roof that can be rented out for private use, there is no better spot in Angeles City to let loose and have a good time.

Before catching your flight out of Clark Field, spend 10-15 minutes to explore Air Force City Park . Within this green space, you’ll find retired planes from the Filipino Air Force sprinkled throughout like sculptures. ABOUT SEE & DO EAT & DRINK STAY BUDGET ADVICE

Travel Insurance

Angeles is a highly-urbanized and independent city in Pampanga .  The city played a big role in the history of the country being the seat of the Philippine government under Emilio Aguinaldo and the venue of the first anniversary celebration of Philippine Independence following its declaration the year before in Kawit, Cavite.  It is also the first location of the American camp which eventually expanded to neighboring towns and in later years became the Clark Air Base, the largest American base outside the USA.

Due to almost a hundred years of American settlement, the city is heavily influenced by Western civilization that still remains long after the Americans left the area due to the disastrous eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991.  Some monuments and street names are dedicated to Americans who made a great impact during their stay in the country.  The city has shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, and nightlife spots that attract tourists, local and foreign alike.

The Dycaico Mansion, on the other hand, was built in 1920 and was abandoned for 50 years before it was renovated to accommodate a rural bank, a tutorial center, and a restaurant on the second floor.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys ) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using:  Skysca n ner ,  momondo ,  Kayak ,  kiwi.com .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to Angeles City.  Learn what you need to know BEFORE you go!

Tips & Hacks

he following are our Top 10 Tips when visiting this destination in the Philippines:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Angeles City, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Consult your hotel or resort front desk as they are more likely to give you reliable information than a random stranger on the street. Be careful when approaching strangers and selective about who you approach. Always pay attention to your gut feeling and follow it.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling in Angeles City or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

15 Best Things to Do in Angeles City (the Philippines)

Formerly home to the largest American Air Force Base outside of the states, Angeles city has been hyper-kicked into full urbanization. There has been a lot of international influence here throughout modern history by the American Air force, WWII Japanese invaders, and Spanish conquistadors. You’ll see this reflected in monuments, street names, food, and more.

When you visit, expect to see lots of historical memorials honoring American forces and plenty of neighborhoods that were once the stomping grounds for American troops. When the air force base closed down, many Americans stayed. That is why you’ll find a heavy expat community here and plenty of American food, restaurants, and shops that cater towards western desires.

The climate here is categorized as “Tropical Savanna” and “Tropical Monsoon”. You’ll find the wettest times of the month between May and October, with the remainder of the year relatively dry. The hottest month that Angeles City experiences is June- it typically reaches around 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Angeles City :

1. Join a Festival

Angeles City Philippines

Angeles City has festivals kicking off all year round, with October being one of the liveliest months.

Start with La Naval Fiesta on the second Sunday of October that honors the Spanish fleet of Navy ships that have protected the country from the Dutch.

Also in October, you can join in on 3 days of the Big Bite Northern Food Festival held at Marquee Mall. Enjoy over 100 food stalls serving food from the Northern Philippines- with Sisig as the main event.

On the last Friday of October, thousands of devotees migrate to the Apu shrine to pay tribute to Jesus Christ in the Apu Fiesta.

2. Holy Rosary Church

angeles city tour guide

Also known as Santo Rosario Church, this Roman Catholic Church is a beautiful sight to visit with two tall towers and a castle-like structure. But this church is more than just a pretty building and house of worship; it also carries a lot of controversial history.

During the Spanish era, this church was filled with Filipino slaves. The Spanish would take Filipino people of “peasant” status and submit them to forced labor in the name of the church. Countless murders have been committed in this spooky place.

3. Juan D. Nepomuceno Center for Kapampangan Studies

Juan D. Nepomuceno Center for Kapampangan Studies

With so much history and so many changes of rule in this city, it’s hard to keep up with what happened when. Luckily, there is a comprehensive library that has archived it all.

Thanks to the Holy Angel University, anyone can come and take a deeper dive into the history of Angeles City and the native Kapampangan people. This place serves as a museum, research center, gallery, and more.

Nearby, you’ll also find the Museum of Kapampangan Arts that houses works by locally famous Filipino artists.

4. Lily Hill

What was once a lookout point during World War II to monitor the movements of the Japanese, Lily Hill is now an unofficial historical museum. Here you can find WWII relics such as the skeleton of an old Japanese airplanes. On your visit, you’ll also find a 5-ton granite statue of the Tibetan monk, Kannon along with smaller monuments in remembrance of these tough times.

The land itself is worth a walk with greenery all around, blossoming flowers in the spring, and a mysterious feeling while imagining what has taken place right where you step.

5. Kamikaze East Airfield

angeles city tour guide

During World War II, the Japanese fought dirty with suicidal airplane pilots that would crash their Kamikaze planes into the ground at great speeds, killing those around them.

At the Kamikaze East Airfield, you can visit a thought-provoking monument describing the attacks and depicting the intense nationalism of the Japanese military soldiers. The monument serves as a reminder to the reality that once was upon the Philippines and to promote international friendship and positive relations so that history is never repeated in this way.

6. K-9 Cemetery / Military Working Dogs Cemetery

angeles city tour guide

During the era of the Clark Air Force Base, any and every service dog that passed was given an honorary burial and ceremony.

The K-9 Cemetery / Military Working Dogs Cemetery has not been well maintained, but to be honest, the over growth has only added to the intrigue. You’ll walk through tall grass, parting the reeds to read the headstones with doggie names engraved on each one.

These dogs were well loved and were hard workers. If you are an animal lover, go pay tribute to our K-9 service pals.

7. Air Force City Park

angeles city tour guide

Geek out at this outdoor air force museum home to multiple air force jets, propeller planes and helicopters. You can get an up close look to touch at the planes and helicopters once used by the American air force during their stay in Angeles City. A entertaining alteration, many of these planes have been repainted with the Philippine Air Force Logo, but have never actually been used by the Philippine military.

Nearby, you’ll find the barracks for soldiers and a couple of small monuments paying tribute to the American troops. If you come from a military family, you will especially appreciate the opportunity to take a step back in time to see how these soldiers once lived.

8. Zoocobia Fun Zoo

angeles city tour guide

Whether you are a family with kids or just a couple of grownup kids yourselves, a day at Zoocobia Fun Zoo in Angeles City is one you’ll never forget. There are so many thrilling activities for fun-lovers of all ages.

There are super-extreme slides, superman-style ziplining, gravity car racing, pony rides, and an impossibly huge garden maze.

After you’ve worked up an appetite, pop into their tree house restaurant with beautiful views of the jungle. Nibble on western bites such as grilled chicken, burger steak, or breaded pork. There are also set menus that offer a little bit of everything for a reasonable price!

9. Midnight Rodeo

angeles city tour guide

It might look a bit intimidating at first with a cloudy front door and crowded scene, but Midnight Rodeo is the place to go for live music. Talented Filipino cover bands play nonstop from evening til 2:30 in the morning. Your eardrums will be treated to country, reggae, oldies, alternative, pop, and more. You’ll be singing along with practically every song.

The vibes are really friendly here with everyone wearing a smile and many people wearing cowboy hats and big belt buckles.

The music isn’t overwhelmingly loud so you can still have a conversation with your pals while you sip on an ice-cold beer.

10. The Living Room

angeles city tour guide

On the 7th floor of the Queen’s Hotel you will find the coveted establishment dubbed ‘The Living Room’.

Chill out with your friends by playing a game of darts or billiards. There are plenty of TVs around to catch a Philippine boxing match, and lots of laidback seating where you could easily spend hours taking a little ‘me time’.

Head out to the patio for some fresh air and spectacular views of the city. When events or festivals are taking place in Angeles city, this is one of the best spots to watch the fireworks.

11. SM City Clark

angeles city tour guide

SM City Clark is a one-stop mall shop for all your needs and entertainment. Anything you need or miss from home is right here under one roof.

Fill up on tons of great food from Filipino fast food restaurants, traditional pot stalls, Japanese cuisine, or western spots with burgers. The most popular Angeles city Starbucks is here, along with a theatre playing IMAX movies. There is a Nike store along with many more familiar western brands. For kids, there is a play place and lots of ice cream shops.

During the hottest days of the year, this place serves as an air-conditioned oasis.

12. Nayong Pilipino Clark

angeles city tour guide

If you’re wanting to enjoyably stuff decades worth of Philippine culture and history into one or two hours, then come to Nayong Pilipino Clark.

Take a walk through this park where you’ll pass by significant Angeles City buildings like old churches and the house of national heroes. Then, enjoy an hour-long cultural show in the afternoon. Mosey on over to the Aeta Village where you can watch traditional dances. There is also an Orchidarium with indigenous plant species. The exhibits touch on a little bit of everything from culture to history to nature.

This is a great place for kids with plenty of action to keep them entertained and lots of snacks to keep them satiated.

13. Aqua Beach Club

angeles city tour guide

Needing a break from all of the heavy historical lessons? Come to Aqua Beach Club where you can take your mind off of things for a while.

This is the place to be glamorous, get tipsy, and socialize. Every day of the week, this chic beach club has something to offer. Wednesdays are Ladies Day where girls get Php 250 to spend on drinks and on Fridays, come for the pool party with a live DJ and beer pong tournament. "The Town of Angels"

Angeles city tourism.

Angeles City is a city in the Philippines close to the former American Air Base, Clark Base. Commonly called City of Angels, Angeles is the hub of entertainment and modernity in the Central Luzon region of the Phillippines. Part of the luxurious Clark Freeport Zone, it is a small but major city of the country, matching up with the cosmopolitan nature and tourist pull of the capital city, Manila. Angeles City, as well as the province of Pampanga, also serves as the culinary centre of the country.

Angeles is quickly gaining popularity in Asia as a prime spot for nightlife, with the city centre Balibago being the centre of attention for having one of the largest concentrations of neon-lit go-go bars in the world. Being one of the major tourist traps of the Philippines, it has a number of fancy hotels, glitzy malls, luxurious casinos as well as some amazing restaurants offering the best of Filipino cuisine visitors can find in the country. The delicious Filipino dish 'Sisig', made of pig, calamansi and chilli peppers is said to have originated from this city. The cosmopolitan nature of this city is complemented by remnants of its rich colonial history, evidenced by the colonial buildings left behind that add a nice touch to the bright and glamourous cityscape that forms the 'City of Angels'. Apart from the chic malls, there are a number of markets with various themes in the Pampang and San Nicolas districts of the city. Angeles also serves as an interesting blend of cultures, being populated by Filipinos, Americans and Koreans.

Bright lights, glitz and glamour are what characterise the Angeles of today; a city that only emerged from beneath layers of lava and ash following the destructive eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the 1990s. And what a re-emergence it was, apparently beating to a hedonistic tune, complete with neon-clad casinos and enough all-night drinking joints to please any ex-pat. In this self-styling as a Vegas remake of the east, it was the Balibago district that took centre stage, offering up the likes of Fields Avenue and its gaudy red light bars and gaming halls; now hailed as the largest entertainment district in the Philippines! However, that’s just one side to glaringly un-angelic Angeles. There’s also history and culture here, even if it is stuffed somewhat unceremoniously on the edge of the modern age megastructures. For this, Angeles tour guides direct travellers to the Santo Rosario, where the likes of the Pamintuan Mansion and the Rosario Church rub shoulders with the Museo Ning angeles and the Founders Residence as well.

Angeles City Sightseeing Guide

An Angeles sightseeing guide comes in handy when there are a lot of things to see and do in this entertainment capital of the Philippines. Though famous for its nightlife, one can still find a lot of interesting sites and activities during the day. We’ll begin our Angeles sightseeing guide with what the city is well known for, nightlife.

The nights are alive in Balibago in Angeles City. This is where you’ll find restaurants, shopping malls, hotels, and a lot of nightclubs and bars. Not far from here you’ll find casino’s where you can risk whatever amount of money you’d like. But the fun never stops here even after the sun rises.

There are a lot of daytime sites and activities to see and do, which is the next part of our Angeles sightseeing guide. This is relative proof that there are more reasons to visit the place. Like other major tourist destinations in the Philippines, Angeles City has a number of historical sites that date back to the colonial times.

One of these historical sites is the nostalgic Fort Stotsenburg in Sapang Bato, which was a campsite of the American expeditionary forces in the Philippines. Other historic sites here include the Pamintuan Residence, where the Central Bank of the Philippines is located, Bale Matua, which is a Spanish mansion in Santo Rosario, and the Camalig, which was a barn built in 1840 fully restored and today stands as a pizza place.

Moving on with our Angeles sightseeing guide, we’ll look into some nature trails and other fun and popular things to do. First off will have to be trekking up Mount Pinatubo. You’ll love the nature trails and see how beautiful this once-destructive volcano is. If you’re not up to climbing rough trails then you may still get a view of Mount Pinatubo from the sky. You may charter a plane and get an aerial tour of the scenery from over 6,000 feet.

The more subdued activities and sites are next in our Angeles sightseeing guide. The Clearwater Country Club is an ideal place for horseback riding, swimming, and strolling in a stress-free setting. A couple of golf courses you might find interesting are the Marina Hills Golf Course and the Air Force City Golf Course. Cultural sites here include the Christmas Village, which highlights the Christmas spirit as the holidays are celebrated in the Philippines, and the Nayong Pilipino is a theme park that displays and highlights the Philippines’ history and culture.

The sights and activities featured in this Angeles sightseeing guide highlights both the daytime and nighttime activities. The city has a lot of interesting places to see and fun activities to experience. These are some of the big reasons why tourists flock to Angeles City.

CLARK & ANGELES CITY: Travel Guide & Budget Itinerary

CLARK & ANGELES CITY: Travel Guide & Budget Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

As a traveler based in the Philippines, Clark is something that I hear all the time. The Clark International Airport is the fastest growing airport in the country, the second busiest in Luzon, and the secondary gateway to Metro Manila. But for many travelers, that’s all Clark is: a gateway. Many overlook the fact that Clark itself and its surrounding areas are a destination on its own.

Clark has changed over the years but it retains its unassuming characteristic — still systematic and laid-back amid the many developments that happened. It has established itself as a center for aviation and business. It is being groomed as an integral economic hub in Central Luzon. With the presence of a significant number of educational, recreational, and entertainment establishments, Clark is getting ready for the next big step, which includes the development of Clark Global City.

I was fortunate to participate in the annual Lakbay Norte tour spearheaded by the North Philippines Visitors Bureau (NPVB) in partnership with NLEX Corporation. Clark was one of the destinations included in the itinerary. This trip was also made possible with the help of the Greater Clark Visitors Bureau (GCVB).

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING CLARK

The Clark Freeport and Special Economic Zone, commonly referred to as simply “Clark”, covers not only the province of Pampanga but also Tarlac. It includes Angeles City, Mabalacat City, and Porac in Pampanga and Capas and Bamban in Tarlac. There are two zones: the Clark Freeport Zone and the Clark Special Economic Zone.

The Clark Freeport Zone encompasses the former US air force base, the Clark Air Base, which was transformed into a special economic zone in the early 90s. At present, the Clark Freeport Zone is continuously expanding. The launch of the Clark International Airport put Central Luzon on the tourism map, making it more accessible both locally and internationally.

The Clark Special Economic Zone includes the future New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac. The project is managed by the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA).

Here are more things you need to know about Clark:

  • Language: The province of Pampanga has two primary languages — Kapampangan and Sambal. Tagalog and English are also spoken by most of the people as secondary languages.
  • Currency: Philippine peso (PHP, ₱). PHP100 is around USD 1.91, EUR 1.69, SGD 2.59 (as of February 2019).
  • Modes of payment: CASH is preferred. Credit card payments are widely accepted, especially in commercial areas. If you are going outside the urban zones, ensure that you have an ample amount of cash with you.
  • Connectivity: Business ditricts have strong data signals for Globe and Smart.
  • Electricity Info: 220V, 60Hz. Mostly, Socket Type A.

angeles city tour guide

Note: This travel guide will focus more on the Pampanga side.

BEST TIME TO VISIT CLARK

As a tropical country, the Philippines has two seasons — the dry season and wet (rainy) season. The rainy season usually begins in July and can last until October. The rest of the year normally constitutes the dry season with April and May as the peak of summer.

You may also want to take note of these festivals and events. Expect huge crowds during these times.

  • February: Philippine International Hot-Air Balloon Fiesta (Clark Field, Angeles), Caragan Festival (Mabalacat), Nuestra Señora de la Divina Gracia (Mabalacat)
  • April: Sisig Festival (Angeles)
  • September: San Lorenzo Ruiz Feast (Mabalacat)
  • October: Fiestang Kuliat in Angeles (Fiesta de los Santos Angeles Custodios, The Feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary of La Naval, and Fiesta ning Apung Mamacalulu), Tigtigan Terakan Keng Dalan (Angeles)
  • November: Feast of Santa Catalina Alexandria (Porac)

HOW TO GET TO CLARK

Clark International Airport (CIA) is located in Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga. It is the primary gateway to Central and North Luzon for both international and domestic flights. It also serves as the second international gateway to Metro Manila. North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) link CIA to Metro Manila.

MANILA TO CLARK BY CAR

Option 1: Via NLEX. If you want to travel at your own pace by bringing your car, you can drive along the length of NLEX until you reach Dau Exit. Pay the toll and make a left turn going to Angeles City. Continue driving until you reach the point where you should make a right turn going to Clark. This option is perfect for those who like to make a stopover at Angeles City.

Option 2: Via NLEX-SCTEX. From NLEX, continue driving until you reach the exit leading to SCTEX. Decide the best road option for you based on your itinerary: Clark South (Exit) Interchange is located near the Clark Main Gate, while Clark North (Exit) Interchange is near Nayong Pilipino.

The good thing about bringing your own car is that you can do stopover and restroom breaks whenever you need to. In our case, we went further north to have our breakfast at PTT Station’s Café Amazon along SCTEX northbound lane in Bamban, Tarlac. But the interesting part aside from the drinks (try the Iced Thai Milk Tea) and the pastries (I love the Mango Torte and Revel Bar) is PTT’s Restroom 20.

angeles city tour guide

The restroom is solar-powered and works like a paid restroom lounge. As the name suggests, guests using the restroom donate P20. All proceeds will be donated to different organizations that can help the communities where they operate.

MANILA TO CLARK BY REGULAR BUS

As mentioned, North Luzon is connected to Manila by NLEX and SCTEX. Land travel usually takes 2-3 hours, depending on the traffic condition.

angeles city tour guide

Many buses shuttle passengers between Manila and North Luzon daily. One of the most prominent name when it comes to trips to the north is Victory Liner.

  • From Cubao or Pasay terminal, take a Dagupan-bound bus.
  • Alight at Dau-Mabalacat Bus Terminal in Pampanga.
  • Take a short walk to MacArthur Highway. From there, you can either take the jeepney or hire a tricycle.
  • The jeepney or the tricycle can get you directly to the Clark Gate.
  • Ride a jeepney or take a taxi to your hotel or to the attraction you want to visit.

MANILA TO CLARK BY P2P BUS

There are P2P buses that serve the Metro Manila-Clark Airport route. One of them is Genesis Bus.

We created a more detailed post here: P2P BUS CLARK & MANILA: Schedule, Stops & Fares

SUBIC TO CLARK BY P2P BUS

If you are coming from Subic, Victory Liner has a direct route.

HOW TO GET AROUND CLARK AND ANGELES

  • Taxi/Cab. This is the most convenient option because they can shuttle guests to, from, and within Clark. They can get you directly to your hotels or the tourist attractions.
  • Jeepney. Public jeepneys operate within Clark Freeport too. As of writing, there are four different jeepney routes operating within Clark Freeport Zone. Ask the drivers at the terminal (Main Gate) which jeepney to take. Note: There are two terminal locations — Main Gate and the Mabalacat Gate.
  • Tricycle. In Angeles City, tricycle may be the cheaper and more convenient option for short-distance transit. You may also negotiate with the driver if you want a special trip. However, tricycles are NOT ALLOWED inside Clark Freeport Zone. They can only go as far as the Main Gate (along Fields Avenue). From there, you can just walk to the jeepney terminal and get on a jeep to get you around CFZ.
  • Grabtrike. Grabtrike is now available in Angeles City. There are three different zones covered by Grabtrike: Zone 1 (Pulung Maragul, Balibago, Cutud, Pulung Cacutud, and Sapa Libutad); Zone 2 (Pandan, Marisol, Tabun, Capaya, Mining, Salapung, Lourdes Sur East, and half of Sto. Cristo); Zone 3 (Sto. Domingo, Pulung Bulu, San Jose, Sto. Rosario, half of Sto. Cristo, Agapito del Rosario, and half of San Nicolas). The coverage may expand soon. The rate starts at P25 for the first kilometer, and additional P10 for the succeeding kilometer. GrabTrikes are NOT ALLOWED inside Clark.

THINGS TO DO IN CLARK AND ANGELES CITY

Angeles heritage park.

Angeles City is not only home to many historical sites but also modern business establishments and other industries. The marrying of the old an new is very apparent especially in the Heritage District where the Santo Rosario Church and Museo ning Angeles are centrally located.

angeles city tour guide

Just two blocks away from the museum and the church is the Old Pamintuan Mansion. Built in the early 1880s, the Pamintuan residence has a lot of stories to tell. It became the seat of government during the time of the First Philippine Republic under the rule of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. It also served as the municipal hall of Angeles City and later on, the branch of Bangko Central ng Pilipinas in Central Luzon until 2010. At present, the mansion serves as the Museum of Philippine Social History.

Tibby’s Farm

angeles city tour guide

I’ve always been interested in farming. In fact, I used to co-own a farm in Quezon, but that’s another story. The Philippines has numerous arable lands, which makes agriculture a major source of income for so many provinces. Still, we import farm products like rice and other vegetables from our neighboring countries.

One of the aims of Tibby’s Farm is to raise awareness of the importance of farming to the community and our country. This organic farm is also open to train and educate future farmers, even encouraging young ones to invest in agriculture. As part of its agri-tourism feature, guests can try their hands on harvesting vegetables and fruits in season and feeding livestock.

You can also stay for a night or two inclusive of farm-to-table meals for P1200 per person. The meals included are breakfast, snack, lunch, dinner, and take home snack. They can cook breakfast (P150/pax) and lunch (P250/pax) for a group of at least six people. They also allow guests to bring their own food. Remember to clean before you go and throw your trash properly.

Aqua Planet

angeles city tour guide

With a total area of 10 hectares, Aqua Planet is currently the largest waterpark in the Philippines. It features over 38 water slides and other rides and attractions, promising a #WatermazingExperience for all its guests, children and adults alike.

The attractions are grouped into two zones — the Kiddie Zone and Zone 1 (Adult Zone). The Kiddie Zone has three awesome options for the young ones: Mermaid Bay, Orc Lagoon, and Bubble Base: Kiddie Wave Pool. For adults, there are 11 attractions: Spiral Slides, Octopus Racers, Aqua Loop, Wave River, Hurricane Slides. Super Bowl, Sky Shuttle, Wave Pool, Boogie Bay, Flow Rider, and Tornado. I enjoyed the Octopus Racers, Tornado, and Sky Shuttle. I wanted to try Aqua Loop but we arrived late, so I didn’t get to try it.

From here, you can book a Grab to Aqua Planet. The total fare is P300-350. The travel duration is two to three hours.

El Kabayo Clark Stables Picnic Grounds

angeles city tour guide

This reminds me of the old western movies I watched in one (or two) of my film classes in UP Film Institute years ago. Not too long ago. Haha! It boasts a replica of an old western town that elicits a rough cowboy feel. You know that typical saloon commotion scene? That one.

It won’t be called El Kabayo without the horses right? Here you can enjoy horseback riding (guided or not), carriage ride, trail ride, and even riding lessons. The duration depends on you, but they usually offer two – 30 minutes and 60 minutes. They can also accommodate team building events and conferences. The newest feature is the campsite with glamping facilities. This is one sure site for those who like to experience the best of both worlds — the thrill of camping and the convenience of hotel amenities.

angeles city tour guide

To complete the wild wild west feel, you might want to try the food at Amante Ribs and Steaks located within the El Kabayo complex. Restaurant hours are 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM and 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM.

Rates: P4500 (adults); P2500 (kids); FREE (infants – 2 y/o). Note: These rates are applicable for a minimum of 10 pax. OTHER CLARK TIPS FOR THE POOR TRAVELER

  • Leave nothing but footprints. As always, make it a habit to clean up and take everything that you brought with you when you leave the place. Dispose of your trash properly.
  • Practice sustainable tourism. Help the community by buying local products and bringing your own water bottle and dry bags (or eco bags) instead of buying plastic bottled drinks and plastic bags.
  • Learn some Kapampangan phrases. Although they can perfectly understand and speak Tagalog, learning simple phrases like “dakal a salamat” (thank you very much), “ali” (no), and “wa” (yes) goes a long way. They will appreciate the effort.

It’s quite tricky to write an article about things to do in Angeles City. Maybe this is the reason we’ve put the idea on hold for a while. Angeles City in Pampanga is not only a place we visited for a few days or weeks, it’s our home and it’s where I grew up, and where I met Ruben.

Maybe a simple things-todo-in-Angeles City will never do what we feel about this place justice. Nevertheless, here we are, writing this Angeles City travel guide, to introduce this place to all of you.

To friends, to people who may be thinking of dropping by, and to tourists who wants to see another place in the Philippines – beautiful people, good food, and well, not spoiling the rest of the article.
