GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

Each Forest River RV is weighed at the manufacturing facility prior to shipping. A label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity is applied to every Forest River RV prior to leaving our facilities.

The load capacity of your unit is designated by weight, not by volume, so you cannot necessarily use all available space when loading your unit.

The first Airstream

Airstreams have been a favorite home-on-the-road for vacationers for almost a century. Back in 1929, Wally Byam built the first Airstream trailer – a teardrop-shaped canvas and Masonite shelter attached to a Ford Model T chassis – mainly for his wife Marion, who was fed up camping in drafty tents.

A year later, Byam published a DIY guide to building a trailer, which was followed by floods of requests to construct RVs. To cope with the demand, Byam rented a factory in Culver City, California, officially founding his trailer manufacturing company in 1931.

Finding a name

The fledgling firm completed its first factory-produced model, the Torpedo (pictured), in 1932, and launched two larger models soon after: the Silver Cloud and the Airlite.

A couple of years later, Wally Byam adopted the name "Airstream," a perfect moniker for the company's teardrop-shaped trailers, which cruised down the road "like a stream of air."

First aluminum Airstream

During the early 30s, William Hawley Bowlus, an engineer who had worked on Charles Lindbergh's famous Spirit of St Louis aeroplane, created the Road Chief, an aerodynamic Streamline Moderne-style trailer in gleaming aluminum. But Bowlus' aircraft-inspired RVs failed to sell.

In 1936, Byam stepped in, buying up Bowlus' inventory. Byam reconfigured the Road Chief, creating the iconic Airstream Clipper, pictured here, and put his marketing and advertising skills to good use.

A pricy investment

Sales of the Clipper went through the roof, despite the trailer's hefty $1,200 price tag – a lot of money in Depression-era America, the equivalent of around $25,560 today.

While this Airbnb showcases a well-preserved 1950s interior, its predecessor, the 1936 model, was similarly designed to be cozy and comfortable, with leather seating, solid cabinetry and a cocoon-like ceiling.

Refined design

Production ceased during the Second World War, so Byam closed his business and focused on making aeroplanes instead of trailers, teaming up with aeronautical firms Lockhead and Curtis Wright.

Once the war had ended, Byam re-established Airstream. Applying the aeroplane design skills he learned during wartime, Byam created the Curtis Wright Clipper in 1948. The upgraded Clipper was an overnight success, selling in the thousands. In 1950, Byam created the Flying Cloud, which is still produced today.

Buoyant sales

The firm outgrew its Californian HQ by the 50s, and in 1952 Byam opened a larger factory in Ohio.

With sales buoyant throughout the decade, Byam further refined his RV lineup and launched the Airstream International, "the world's first self-contained trailer," in 1958.

A proud legacy

Byam died in 1962, leaving behind a super-successful trailer company that had become known worldwide.

America's most luxurious trailers, Airstream RVs of the time featured the latest modern conveniences, from air conditioning to refrigerators.

The silver bullet design

The Airstream trailer was redesigned in 1969 with smoother edges that resemble a silver bullet.

Such was its renown, that same year the company was chosen to design and build a mobile quarantine pod for the returning Apollo 11 astronauts.

Is there such a thing as the best air mattress for a camper? When air mattresses are mentioned in the same sentence as camping, they’re often thought of as a primitive camping solution. Not something you throw down on the floor of a Coachmen Freedom or an Airstream Classic.

After all, Class A, B, and C Motorhomes, travel trailers, and even small teardrops have built-in bedding options. After all, booth conversions, sofa beds, bunks, and pop-up mattresses are the norm in an RV. 

The thing is, we’re not talking about the plush and comfy mattress in the Master bedroom—we’re talking thin sofa beds and dining conversion options that may do the trick for a 10-year-old but not for a 45-year-old with an achy back. 

Will an Air Mattress Fit in a Camper?

For the most part, sure, an air mattress will fit in a camper. It’s not like you blow it up before dragging it through the front door. Of course, if you purchase a king-size air mattress for a teardrop, you’re asking for problems. 

In most circumstances, assuming you buy the right air mattress for the floor space in your RV, it will fit just fine. Most air mattresses inflate rapidly, and they deflate as fast as a bed converts back into a dinette. 

Not to mention the air mattress is probably a lot more comfortable than sleeping on the thin cushions of a dinette conversion. It’s not thin because the manufacturers wanted it to be but because it’s necessary for a fold-out to at least be halfway functional. 

6 Things You Should Look For in an RV Air Mattress

The air mattresses of today aren’t like those old air mattresses in the 90s that started deflating the moment you laid down on them. They’ve come a long way, with more durability and longevity than ever before. 

The quality of an air mattress mostly has to do with its construction. You’ll find that the majority of air mattresses on the market use PVC, which makes sense. PVC is often used in inflatable whitewater kayaks. 

However, chlorine in PVC products is becoming a real problem for some, especially when it comes to skin irritations and other health issues. Focus on PVC construction material that’s “eco-friendly.” While they aren’t as eco-friendly as they sound, they are free of chlorine. 

Micro coils are another sign of a quality air mattress and polyfoam insulation in self-inflating models. 

You only need to worry about height if you’re backpacking away from the RV and need an air mattress for your nights in the wild. Height means additional weight, and unnecessary weight is a no-no when backpacking. 

For normal use, height indicates added support, comfort, and additional features that justify the extra height, such as the aforementioned micro coils or additional polyfoam insulation in the lining. 

There are certain things in life where “cheap” results in a good deal. An air mattress is not one of them. Cheap usually means a bad night’s sleep. That doesn’t mean you should refinance your home to afford an air mattress. 

Price usually runs in tandem with size. One thing you should always remember is that a smaller air mattress for a camper is better no matter what type of camper you’re using. It will save you money and space in the long run. 

4. Warranty

Air mattresses are notorious for the slow leak—so much so that some campers and RVers would just prefer that it blow up to avoid waking up once or twice in the middle of the night to inflate it. A warranty helps with peace of mind; if you have the infamous slow leak within a month, you can get a new one. 

At the very minimum, look for a 2 to 3-year limited warranty that covers manufacturer defects. You won’t be able to get away with dragging it over rocks and broken glass, but there’s no excuse for a slow leak a few days after hauling the air mattress out of the box.

Remember when we said, “smaller is better?” Smaller is always better when it comes to air mattresses. There’s no reason to give your 8-year-old daughter or son a king-size air mattress, and guests can more than handle a full, possibly a queen. 

6. Built-in or Portable Pump

The portable pump might make more sense in a tent, depending on how it’s powered. A built-in pump is far and away the best answer in an RV. It’s quick, efficient, and easy. Also, you always have a power supply if you need it. 

They are a little more expensive, but it’s not a huge difference, especially when you want more convenience. Some built-in pumps will maintain the air, which is wonderful if you have a slow leak. So long as you don’t jump out of your skin when the pump kicks on at 2 a.m., you’ll love it.

• Allow it to dry again
• Take the patch material and cut a circle to the size
• Add the adhesive to the patch and the area around the hole
• Secure the patch to the hole
• Press a flat, heavy weight on the patched hole and allow it to cure for 24 hours

My Minnie Winnie 26a has a rear slide with a split short queen which is a chore to make or manage. A 4″-6″ air mattress with my 3″ memory foam fitted would be a great advantage to this factory two piece. Suggestions?
