Short history of Adelaide, Australia

The capital of South Australia , Adelaide has a fascinating and distinctive history as the only Australian state without a convict past. On both of these small group tours ; Adelaide or the Flinders ranges we explore and learn about this city.

Adelaide viewed from Windy Point

Australia’s fifth-biggest city and the capital of South Australia , Adelaide has a fascinating and distinctive history as the only Australian state without a convict past.

The traditional owners of the land where Adelaide is now situated are the Kaurna people, who called the area Tarntanyangga, meaning ‘place of the red kangaroo’.

The colony of South Australia was established as a British province in February 1836, with the offical Government of South Australia proclaimed on 28 December near the Old Gum Tree in the suburb of Glenelg north. The city of Adelaide was proclaimed on the last day of 1836, when the new colony’s Surveyor-General, Sir William Light, fixed its location at about 12km inland from the eastern shore of Gulf St. Vincent.

Light would go on to shape the new city. Unique among the early Australian cities, Adelaide is a planned city, with a grid designed by Light. Light’s plan provided for five squares in the central city, and a ring of parks surrounding it on all sides. His vision was inspired by Ancient Greek and Roman cities, as well as planned cities in the United States, particularly Philadelphia and Savannah, Georgia – which share with Adelaide the layout of a central city square, with four squares surrounding it and parklands then surrounding the city centre.

Though Adelaide has since suburbanised and expanded, Light’s forward-thinking plan has served the city well. Adelaide has had wide roads since its founding, an easily navigable plan, and plenty of green space in the city centre. Ring roads, inspired by the initial design, make it easy to get between suburbs without getting bogged down in traffic in the city centre.

Unlike the other Australian colonies, South Australia was established as a free – rather than convict – settlement. The plan for South Australia’s colonisation – often referred to as the ‘Wakefield plan’ – was developed by Edward Gibbon Wakefield while in prison for abducting a 15-year old heiress. Wakefield developed the theory of ‘sufficient price’, which claimed that the colonies had developed slowly thanks to government policy of giving away huge tracts of land in the extensive Australian hinterland. Because immigrants could become land-owners easily in Australia, the colonies had grave shortages of labour, which restricted development. The colonial capitalist also had to be the worker, and without leisure, civilisation had degraded: the ‘universal object; taste, science, manners, morals, abstract politics’ had been neglected. By selling land at a higher price, Wakefield claimed, the colonies would be able to create a supply of labour, thus enabling economic and urban development.

On his release from prison, Wakefield developed relationships with a number of British MPs. In the 1830s, he played a subterranean role in the formation of South Australia, setting up the South Australia Association in 1833, though he would subsequently disown it.

Over subsequent years, South Australia became something of an ‘experiment’, where ideas were tested that might remedy social ills in Britain. From the outset, the colony had no state religion, and strongly protected freedom of religion. It thus attracted refugees from around Europe, giving Adelaide the nickname ‘City of Churches’ for all the denominations represented.

In particular, Adelaide attracted an extensive German Lutheran community, many immigrating from Prussia in protest against Kaiser William III’s enforcement of a new state prayer book. In 1838, a group of Germans from Hesse, in the Rhineland, became South Australia’s first wine growers, paving the way for the world-famous wine regions of the Barossa Valley and Mcclaren Vale.

The period from 1850 to 1890 are known as the ‘boom and bust years’, as South Australia declined in the 1850s, before booming again in the 1860s, as rapid population expansion in Victoria created demand for South Australian wheat. However, like the rest of Australia, South Australia was affected by severe economic depression in the 1890s.

In the 20th century, Adelaide became an important centre of manufacturing, with the establishment of car-manufacturing factories by international companies General Motors (Holden) and Chrysler in the satellite city of Elizabeth. However, Adelaide grew slower than the cities on the east coast, and the city was overtaken by Brisbane in the early 1960s as Australia’s third biggest city.

The 1970s saw South Australia develop a reputation for progressivism under the leadership of the charismatic and controversial premier Don Dunstan. It became the first Australian state to legalise homosexuality in 1975. Under Dunstan’s leadership, the Adelaide Festival of Arts was expanded, and South Australia developed a reputation as a cultural hub.

Today, the Adelaide Festival of Arts – which has expanded to include the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the world music festival WOMAdelaide, and the Adelaide Writer’s Festival – is a major draw for international and interstate visitors to Adelaide. Locals have dubbed the period – which also includes the street motor race of the Adelaide 500 – ‘Mad March’ for the frenzy of cultural activities on offer.

12 Adelaide Day Trips: Unveiling South Australia’s Hidden Gems

Koalas seen in trees on Kangaroo Island, one of the best Adelaide day trips in Australia

On our last visit to Australia, Jeff and I spent some time in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. Nestled between pristine beaches and rolling hills, this vibrant city is not only a hub of culture and history but also a gateway to a plethora of breathtaking Adelaide day trips.

From stunning coastal landscapes to world-renowned wine regions, Adelaide is a treasure trove for adventurous explorers seeking unforgettable experiences. Below we take you on a virtual journey through 12 captivating Adelaide day trips that will leave you enchanted by the beauty and diversity of this remarkable region.

My personal favourite Adelaide day trips are Kangaroo Island, Barossa Valley, and Hahndorf, each offering unique experiences. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a wine and food connoisseur, or a history buff, these destinations will undoubtedly cater to your interests and provide you with cherished memories.

We also delve into the lesser-known treasures of Adelaide, from the rugged landscapes of Flinders Chase to the picturesque Adelaide Hills.

Overall, we found Adelaide to be the perfect base for exploring some of the most beautiful and unique destinations in the region.

No matter what your interests are, you’re sure to find something to enjoy in Adelaide and its surrounding regions. Our recommendations are below.

Best Adelaide day trips

Here are some of the best day trips from Adelaide that we recommend checking out:

  • Explore Kangaroo Island
  • Indulge in German delight in Hahndorf
  • Visit one of the wine regions: Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, or Clare Valley
  • Take a horse-drawn tram in Victor Harbor
  • Play on the beach in Glenelg
  • Discover history at Moonta, Burra, or Port Adelaide
  • See wildlife at Monarto Safari Park
  • Stroll along the Myponga Reservoir

Kangaroo Island is our favourite of the Adelaide day trips

Koala and joey seen in trees on Kangaroo Island, Australia.

We were amazed by Australia’s third-largest island’s natural beauty and unique wildlife.

While the impressive scenery captured our attention, it was the endemic wildlife that captured my heart. We spotted several amazing Australian animals , including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, echidna, seals, and dolphins.

The untouched wilderness of Flinders Chase National Park was a highlight of our trip, where we hiked through the rugged landscape and stood in awe of the stunning rock formations of Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks.

Jeff and I visited Kangaroo Island before the devastating fires of 2019-2020. Although the fires have undoubtedly impacted the island, we know that the community worked hard to recover and rebuild.

Kangaroo Island requires both a drive and a short ferry ride from Adelaide.

Hands down, it is my favourite of our recommended Adelaide day trips. In truth, while you can do a Kangaroo Island day trip, we recommend it as a two or three-day adventure if you have the time. If not, it’s a long day but well worth the effort. Reserve your day trip to Kangaroo Island here .

Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills

German style buildings in Hahndorf, South Australia, one of the best day trips from Adelaide

In complete contrast to Kangaroo Island, Hahndorf’s quaint streets are lined with historic German buildings. The town has a rich history, being Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement .

Located in the Adelaide Hills, Jeff and I were immediately drawn to this unique and charming town and enjoyed our authentic German experience.

As we explored the town, we couldn’t resist stopping at one of the many restaurants for a traditional German lunch. The food was delicious, and we enjoyed tasting some of the local specialties like bratwurst, schnitzels, and sauerkraut. The German-style bakeries were also a highlight, offering freshly baked pretzels, pastries, and cakes.

In addition to the delicious food, Hahndorf is known for its handmade crafts and souvenirs. The town is home to many artisanal shops, where we found unique gifts like handcrafted wood carvings, leather goods, and jewellery. We loved browsing the shops and finding souvenirs to take home.

For animal lovers, the Hahndorf Farm Barn is a must-visit attraction. The farm offers visitors the opportunity to interact with friendly farm animals like lambs, goats, and alpacas. Best of all, you can often get a discount entrance to Hahndorf Farm Barn here .

Take a day trip from Adelaide to one of the wine-growing regions

Wine tour in a Vineyard in Barossa Valley, a renowned wine-producing region northeast of Adelaide

The warm climate and diverse soils of the area make it an ideal location for growing a wide variety of grapes. You’ll want to head to the “cellar door”. It’s the name for the dedicated wine tasting, sampling and purchasing room in Australia and New Zealand.

As an Adelaide day trip, the three main regions are Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Clare Valley. While self-driving is always an option, if you are going to partake in wine-tasting, you might want to consider a tour for your wine-tasting day trips from Adelaide. Not only do you get local knowledge, but you also get a driver.

Barossa Valley

Located just an hour’s drive from Adelaide, the Barossa Valley is a world-renowned wine region famous for its Shiraz and Riesling. With more than 80 cellar doors, the Barossa offers wine-tasting experiences to suit all tastes and budgets.

Barossa Valley also offers a range of outdoor activities like hot air balloon rides to see the sunrise over the vineyards or guided cycling tours through the scenic countryside. It’s home to a vibrant arts and culture scene, with regular festivals, markets, and exhibitions showcasing local talent. Reserve your Barossa Valley tour here .

McLaren Vale

McLaren Vale is another wine-lovers paradise located just 45 minutes from Adelaide. With over 70 cellar doors, the region is also renowned for producing some of the best wines in Australia, including Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Grenache.

For a fun twist, many of the wineries in the region also offer food and wine pairing experiences, where we can sample local cheeses, chocolates, and other delicious treats alongside our wine.

McLaren Vale is also home to some stunning natural scenery with spectacular views of the ocean and the surrounding countryside. It’s easy to see why this region is so popular for day trips from Adelaide. Reserve your McLaren Vale tour here .

Clare Valley

The Clare Valley, located north of Adelaide, is another beautiful wine region that is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbours. The valley is home to some of South Australia’s best Riesling wines, as well as a range of other varieties.

Like the other regions, you can take a guided wine tour, explore the historic towns, or simply enjoy the stunning countryside. Reserve your Clare Valley tour here .

Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsula

Victor Harbor horse-drawn carriage from Granite Island

Located just an hour’s drive south of Adelaide, Victor Harbor is a charming seaside town with plenty of activities.

The town is known for its horse-drawn tram, which takes you from the mainland to Granite Island , where you can see penguins and other wildlife. You can also take a scenic coastal walk, go whale watching, or visit the town’s many cafes and galleries.

If you are feeling active, Victor Harbor offers surfing, kayaking, and fishing. In addition, the town hosts several festivals and events throughout the year.

While on the Fleurieu Peninsula, you might want to check out some of South Australia’s most stunning beaches, including the popular surf spot of Middleton.

Glenelg Beach

Famiy walking along Glenelg Beach, one of the best Adelaide day trips

White sand, clear blue waters, and the bustling atmosphere of the oceanfront promenade help make Glenelg Beach one of the most popular beaches in the area. It’s just a short tram ride from the heart of Adelaide.

There are endless possibilities here, from swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing on the beach to a variety of water sports, including paddleboarding, kayaking, and jet skiing. The promenade boasts plenty of oceanfront cafes and restaurants, so on lazy days we can simply enjoy a meal or a drink while taking in the stunning coastal views.

One of the most prominent features of Glenelg is its pier that stretches out into the ocean, offering spectacular views of the coastline and the surrounding areas.

There are a number of fascinating heritage sites located in and around Glenelg. The Bay Discovery Centre , located near the pier, offers a glimpse into the history and culture of the area, while the Old Gum Tree , located just a short drive away, is the site where the colony of South Australia was officially proclaimed in 1836.

Moonta Bay jetty at sunset

Located on the Yorke Peninsula, Moonta is a historic copper mining town with plenty of attractions. We, however, didn’t stop here.

Its main attraction is the Moonta Mines Museum, which tells the story of the town’s copper mining history. You can also take a ride on the Moonta Mines Tourist Railway, which runs through the town’s historic streets.

Port Adelaide

Port Adelaide Institute histroric building viewed from the docks at sunset

Established in 1837, Port Adelaide is a historic maritime town located approximately 20 minutes (14 km) northwest of Adelaide. The town is home to some of South Australia’s oldest buildings, making it a unique glimpse into South Australia’s past.

The Port Adelaide wharf is the perfect place to see old ships or hop on a river cruise. There are several museums in the area that offer a fascinating glimpse into the town’s past, including the South Australian Maritime Museum, the National Railway Museum, and the Aviation Museum.

Monarto Safari Park

3 year old hand reared Cheetah looking trustingly up at his keeper – Monarto Zoological Park, South Australia

Monarto Safari Park is a must-visit destination for wildlife enthusiasts and is located just 60 kilometres or approximately a 1-hour drive from Adelaide. The park is home to over 500 animals, including lions, cheetahs, rhinoceroses, giraffes, and many more.

As Australia’s largest open-range zoo, Monarto Safari Park offers an opportunity to get up close and personal with the animals in their natural habitats. The park is divided into several regions, each representing a different continent.

Enjoy the park on your own, join a guided tour, or spend the night in one of the park’s luxury tents for a truly immersive experience.

Derelict building in Burra

Burra is a historic town located approximately 160 km (about a 2-hour drive) north of Adelaide and is a perfect add-on to an Adelaide day trip to the Clare Valley.

A mid-19th century prosperous mining town, it left behind a rich history and stunning architecture. One of my favourite historic buildings is the Burra Town Hall, which was built in 1857 and is still in use today.

Probably the main attraction is the Burra Mine Heritage Trail. It took us through the remains of the old mine while providing insight into the life of miners during the 1800s. Download a free self-guided heritage walking tour and map here .

Myponga Reservoir

Aerial view of Myponga Reservoir and dam

Located just 45 minutes drive south of Adelaide, Myponga Reservoir is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. The reservoir is surrounded by scenic hills and offers a picturesque backdrop for picnics, hiking, and cycling.

Although there are plenty of restrictions as to what is allowed on or in the water , you can enjoy fishing (permit required) and kayaking on the reservoir’s peaceful waters.

The area is known for its abundant birdlife, and visitors may even spot a koala or two. The reservoir opened up to the public (April 2019), with a new trail allowing visitors to walk across the dam wall and take in stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Final thoughts on Adelaide day trips

While there are loads of things to do in Adelaide , we are glad we allocated time from some day trips. They offered us a range of experiences, from wine tasting to wildlife encounters, and are easily accessible from the city.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day by the beach or an adventure in the great outdoors, there is something for everyone just a short drive from Adelaide. Or, some can even be the first stops on a longer road trip to Melbourne.

My personal favourite Adelaide day trips are Kangaroo Island, Barossa Valley, and Hahndorf, each offering unique experiences that we recommend.

It looks like Adelaide is a good spot to use as a base and head out for day trips. I love the variety in day trips available. I can see why Kangaroo Island would be a favourite spot. We would certainly not pass on a chance to head to the wine regions for tastings. Even if it meant leaving early for a sunrise hot air balloon trip!

That poor Victor Harbor horse! One tough pony. I didn’t realize the fires got all the way out to islands.

10 Best Day Trips from Adelaide [+ tips & tours]

By: Author Tracy Collins

Posted on Last updated: March 20, 2024

Whether you’re looking for the best day trips from Adelaide, the best things to do in Adelaide or both, we have the guides for you.

We’ve just returned from the South Australian capital and absolutely loved it. Sharing the best day trips from Adelaide with you as soon as possible was a must!

From every Adelaide must-see to the Adelaide day trips that belong on every visitor’s itinerary, this article (when read in conjunction with our guide to the 10 best things to do in Adelaide ) outlines the places you need to know about before you go. These include beach suburbs, the Barossa Valley and sites related to art, sports, nature and shopping. Plus a whole lot more.

Read on to find out about the 10 best day trips from Adelaide. By the end of this post, you’ll be itching to visit one of Australia’s most charming cities, we promise!

The Barossa Valley

Mclaren vale , the cockle train, victor harbor, murray river mouth, river torrens , mount lofty, cleland wildlife park, kangaroo island, which day trips from adelaide made your list, 10 best day trips from adelaide.

The Barossa Valley is world-famous, and Barossa day tours from Adelaide are probably the most popular of all. Everyone from backpackers to travellers who go five stars all the way wants to sample wine and see the rolling vineyards of this region. It’s interesting to anyone to see the actual place where the wines they buy at the supermarket locally or on the other side of the world are actually produced.

There are so many Barossa day trips from Adelaide to choose from.

Pick between a premium tour with lunch , an e-bike tour with gourmet food , a picnic at Jacob’s Creek , a Barossa and Hahndorf tour , a day trip to the Barossa and Adelaide Hills , or even a hot air balloon flight over the vineyards.

Chocolates in the Barossa Valley

Hahndorf makes one of the best day tours from Adelaide. Settled by German migrants during the 19th century, the town features German style architecture and is a great place to try all sorts of artisan and gourmet foods.

The town takes only 20 to 30 minutes to reach from Adelaide by car, or around 45 by bus. It’s a definite must in any Adelaide itinerary . Hahndorf dates back to 1839, and offers history, culture, shopping, family-friendly activities and great food and wine. Only a handful of residents speak German at home, so there’s no need to worry about getting by with English!

If you don’t have a car, booking an organised day tour to Hahndorf makes life simple. You can also take a combined tour of McLaren Vale and Hahndorf , Hahndorf and Victor Harbor , or the Barossa and Hahndorf .

Tracy in Hahndorf near Adelaide

Like the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale is known for wine making. The area is around 33 kilometres (or 21 miles) south of Adelaide, so it doesn’t take too long to reach. You can get there by car, or taking a guided tour is a great way to go as you can make the most of those wine tastings!

Another place to visit in this area is the Cube. This is a striking, modern, five-storey construction that has to be seen to be believed. Apparently, the puzzle-like design was inspired by the complexities involved in wine production.

This area is also great for foodies, and abundant in natural attractions – including beautiful beaches. A McLaren Vale tour is one of the best day trips from Adelaide, and there are plenty of options to choose from.

Including a McLaren Vale and Hahndorf highlights day trip, a small group tour of the Vale, a Glenelg and McLaren Vale tasting experience , a tour by e-bike or a day trip that includes McLaren Vale and the d’Arenberg Cube .

McLaren Vale South Australia 8

The Cockle Train runs between Victor Harbor and Goolwa. Victor Harbor lies directly south of Adelaide, and the steam train sets off from here before heading along the South Australian coastline. As far as day trips around Adelaide are concerned, this one is suitable for all ages and interests.

The route of the train follows the oldest steel tracks in Australia, which date back to 1854. It takes around 30 minutes to travel each way. Some like to take time to explore Victor Harbor before returning to Goolwa or take a trip on the Murray River from the latter.

Sign for the Cockle Train in Goolwa.

Victor Harbor is an attractive coastal town where southern right whales, seals or dolphins can sometimes be seen. Visitors sometimes also cross the causeway via horse-drawn tram to Granite Island, the habitat of a penguin colony.

Even if you don’t do much, the natural, coastal setting is a relaxing place to spend time in. You can take a southern highlights and Victor Harbor tour from Adelaide if you like, or book a day trip that combines Hahndorf and Victor Harbor .

Victor Harbor 2

The Murray Mouth is the point where the mighty river meets the ocean. This is significant, as the Murray is Australia’s longest river – by a country mile and then some. It runs through three Australian states – New South Wales, Victoria and of course South Australia. The river is key in many fruit-producing parts of these states.

You can take a Murray River cruise from Goolwa . The Cockle Train operates between there and Victor Harbor. This boat trip lasts for an hour and a half and comes highly recommended. You can see seals and a variety of wetland birds en route, so it’s ideal for wildlife lovers.

Alternatively, take a longer Coorong Discovery Cruise from Goolwa . This one lasts for three-and-a-half hours and includes lunch and a walk in Coorong National Park. Whichever you go for, a Murray cruise is one of the best Adelaide day tours for seniors, families, couples and solo travellers alike.

Coorong National Park sign.

An alternative to the majestic Murray is to book day tours in Adelaide that explore the Torrens River. These leave from Elder Park Landing in the city centre, so they’re easier to access when you haven’t much time to spare.

Choose between a Devonshire tea cruise and a Popeye sightseeing cruise that might just make you want to pack your bags and move to Adelaide! You can hop off this at the zoo if you like. Both tours last for 45 minutes.

River Torrens

If you have a head for heights and love taking in incredible views, then Adelaide sightseeing tours that include Mount Lofty are well worth considering. Its peak is the highest point of the Mount Lofty Ranges, and there are jaw-dropping views from the summit. This is only around 15 kilometres (or under 10 miles) from the city centre.

You can take a tour that covers both Mount Lofty and Adelaide . The best places to visit in the city are included, as well as Hahndorf and the viewpoint. Another popular option is to combine the area with Cleland Wildlife Park. You can do this via Adelaide on half day trips, or longer if you prefer.

Two of the best are the Mount Lofty summit and Cleland Wildlife Park tour, a full day tour including hiking to the peak or one that includes a downhill ride from the peak plus a visit to the creatures at Cleland.

Mount Lofty 1

Cleland Wildlife Park is only a 20 minute drive from the city centre, and it’s arguably the pick of the short drives from Adelaide to take when you want to get up close to native Australian creatures. Seeing animals in their natural habitat is what this park’s all about, rather than zoo-style enclosures.

Species to look out for include koalas, wallabies, dingoes, bettongs, kangaroos, wombats, potoroos and echidna. Plus a variety of Australian birds.

Guided tours that visit the park include an all-day tour including a Mount Lofty hike , a downhill bike ride from the summit plus a park visit, or a five-and-a-half hour tour including Mount Lofty and Cleland Wildlife Park .

For many, one of the must-do things in Adelaide is to take a trip to Kangaroo Island. This is also known as a haven for Australian wildlife, and you might spot all sorts of native birds here as well as creatures like sea lions, kangaroos, wallabies and koalas. If you get lucky you may even see a shy echidna.

The unspoiled coastline of the island is also very much worth going for. If you want to book a Kangaroo Island tour from Adelaide, we can recommend a couple of Kangaroo island day trips from Adelaide.

Take the full day trip with lunch , or the wine and dine day tour . Both last for 16 hours.

Kangaroo Island 3

Whether you were looking for self-drive day trips from Adelaide or the top places to visit in Adelaide city centre, we hope our lists have given you some food for thought.

Adelaide is a charming place, and has more of a local feel than some bigger Australian cities . We know you’re going to love it every bit as much as we do!

Travel Australia’s Outback At Any Age

You are never too old to travel outback australia. unleash your inner traveller with our amazing outback tours for seniors in australia.

We often receive questions from people about whether our tours in Australia are suitable for seniors. We do have many trips that are open age and specific trips that we recommend especially for those over 50. We specialize in Outback tours for seniors in Australia.

These trips are perfect for you if your backpacking days are numbered but you still want to travel on a budget and experience Australia close up. So, in this article, we will let you know the perfect trips for you in Australia if you are interested in outback tours for seniors.

We will look at Uluru tours for seniors, Kimberley tours for seniors, and also of course tours to Kakadu National Park from Darwin for seniors. We want everywhere in Australia to be accessible for every age! We have tours for over 50s in Australia but they are still full of adventure, hiking, and activiity.

Portrait Of Smiling Senior Friends Hiking In Along Base walk at Uluru

As a senior traveler, we are referring to you as a fun-loving adventurer with experience, aged 50 years or above. You may be one of Australia’s baby boomer generation wanting to see your own country, a teacher from Europe on a summer holiday break to visit Australia or a couple in your 50s on an around the world trip. Whichever it is we have a trip for you. Don’t be offended by the ‘senior’ label, please take it as a compliment. We still want you to go deep into the outback and have an adventure.

We know you do not want to join a group of 18-30s on a bus tour with loud music and lots of partying. We know you want to get off the beaten track and see Australia’s outback. We also want to offer an extra level of knowledge and education from our experienced tour guides to you, as we know you are keen to learn about where you are visiting. We are also aware you can hike often longer than those in their 20s and are keener to see the great outdoors and not just sit on your phone.

All our tours suitable for seniors are small group adventures in Australia.

What do we mean by a small group adventure tour in Australia? You will not be on a 52 seater coach driving to just the highlights of each destination for a photo opportunity. Our Australia tours get you right into the heart of each area and allow you to take the hiking tracks and walks to experience all the land has to offer. Our backpacking trips normally run with a larger group as they like to have a drink and socialise in the evenings. Our more comfortable outback trips for seniors and those a bit more mature run in smaller buses. This helps us get off the beaten track and away from the crowds.

On all these trips we do recommend you are able to walk 6kms over uneven ground. Please be aware of the heat in Australia. You are welcome to bring hiking sticks to aid you and we highly recommend ankle-high walking shoes. There is also a strong element of participation on our group tours. So we can keep these trips at great value and with good group dynamics, we ask everyone to get involved with cooking and washing up on tour.

“On all these trips we do recommend you are able to walk 6kms over uneven ground.” Real Aussie Adventures

Outback tours for seniors in Australia

Here is the breakdown of our outback tours for seniors in Australia by destination.

Tours from Darwin suitable for seniors

We have a great selection of Kakadu tours for seniors all starting from Darwin. To get you up close to the fantastic Top End of Australia.

3 day Kakadu tours

One of our tours from Darwin out to Kakadu National Park and Litchfield in the Northern Territory is very suitable for seniors.

Our 3 day Kakadu tour, the Dragonfly Dreaming , is appropriate for those over 40. We do however take passengers of any age on this Kakadu tour including children, so great for a family. We even have a good family rate if you are a parent wanting to show your children the wonders of the Northern Territory.

We happily take older passengers if your fitness is good. We recommend that you can walk for 6km over slightly rough terrain comfortably. Our guides are there to help you over more rocky terrain, but you are expected to do the walks unaided.

We pick you up directly from your hotel if it’s in Darwin’s central area, so no need to walk far in the morning to a meeting place. At each campsite, you will not have to walk too far to get to our enclosed kitchen area or to your permanent tent. On our Kakadu camping trips, we differ a bit from those marketed at backpackers and the 18-30 crew. We offer permanent tents inside of which is a real bed and pillow. So you will have a comfortable night’s sleep.

We also have hot showers and toilets close to the campsite. If you have to get up in the night it isn’t a far walk to the facilities. We do advise you to bring a torch so you can see on those night wanderings. We have an article on what items to take on an outback tour, so check that out.

The gorges at Jim Jim and Twin are undeniable highlights of any Kakadu tour. The walking to Jim Jim falls is around 900m. It’s rugged, involving scrambling up and down rocks and so is only suitable for people with a reasonable level of fitness. At the plunge pool, there is time for swimming, relaxing, and enjoying the spectacular scenery. Then we walk back. The walk should take about 1 hour in, so no rushing for this walk. There isn’t much height in the walk, so no elevated climbing.

5 Day 4WD Top End Tour from Darwin

Our 5-day adventure is also a perfect Kakadu Tour for seniors who have a good level of fitness. And those who love camping!

With World Heritage national parks, cascading waterfalls, and expansive wetlands filled with exotic wildlife, not to mention some of the oldest rock art anywhere earth, it’s little wonder the Northern Territory’s Top End has captured the attention of travelers from Taree to Timbuktu.

Departing throughout 2022, this small-group tour is your chance to experience its majesty for yourself.

This small-group tour includes private campsite accommodation, 12 meals including daily breakfast, camping equipment, and fees, as well as the services of two professional guides

The tour has two guides for the entire trip, for taking customers on walks with different fitness levels, where one guide can do longer walks with the fitter members of the group, and the other guide can do a shorter walk for those less mobile.

You will stay in our permanent tents, which are perfect for seniors as you are not sleeping on the ground.

Check out more about the adventure by clicking here: 5 Day Top End and ArnhemLand Tour.

5 Day Comfort Kakadu Tours

For those looking for an outback tour for seniors with a little more comfort- we have the perfect Kakadu, Litchfield, and Katherine Gorge tour for you. We provide you with a fully accommodated tour, staying in a resort in Kakadu and motels along the way.

This tour still has the element of adventure, requiring a good level of fitness. However, with the luxury of sleeping inside..in some aircon! A must for those tropical temperatures of the Top End.

Departing Darwin this tour is a must for those looking for a comprehensive visit to the highlights of this region.

Find out more here: 5 Day Kakadu, Litchfield and Katherine Adventure Tour

We also have this as a 4-day tour, you will miss out on Litchfield National Park, but perfect if you are shorter on time. 4 Day Kakadu Outback Adventure Tour.

Darwin Day Tours for Seniors

We have our 1 Day Litchfield National Park and 1 Day Kakadu Tours from Darwin which are perfect for seniors and over 50’s.

With less walking and hiking on our day trips, they are ideal if you do not want to do a trip that’s extremely active.

Kakadu National Park is around a 3 hour drive from Darwin, so a day trip to Kakadu is a long day. However, well worth the visit, it’s a must do on your Top End trip.

For a one-day tour to Kakadu or Litchfield for seniors you still need a good mobility level. You will be getting on and off the minibus many times during the day. Plus walking to waterfalls and sites of interest.

So many tours from Darwin for seniors. Always remember it’s a hot tropical environment up in the Top End. So come prepared with a refillable water bottle and layers.

Have a great time exploring Darwin and the surroundings on our tours.

Alice Springs tours for seniors

Uluru tours for seniors.

If you are a senior or more mature and looking for an Uluru tour for seniors from Alice Springs or Ayers Rock then we can help! Our open-aged trip for 4 days is perfect for those who are not youth anymore. We also take children on this tour and have a great rate if you are a family. Grandchildren welcome!

4 Day Uluru Tours

Our comfort 4 day tour to Uluru, Kings Canyon and Kata Tjuta trip pick ups from most hotels in Alice Springs and also picks up at Ayers rock airport. So if you have taken advantage of the cheap flights into Ayers Rock we can assist.

Check out more about our 4 day Uluru tour suitable for seniors here:

4 Day 4WD Perentie Dreaming Red Centre Safari

Just like in Kakadu National Park we require a good level of fitness for these Red Centre trips. We ask that everyone can walk up to 5Km unaided over slightly rough terrain.

The 4-day tour has a short guided base walk at Uluru included. Then the guide will leave you to explore Uluru up close by yourself. Many people ask how far is it around the base of Uluru? It is 11km on a dirt path. there is no climbing, and can be completed in around 2-3 hours. So very manageable for those with basic fitness. We allocate you 2-3 hours to do this walk, so you are able to walk the whole thing or just take in some of the flora and fauna at a relaxed pace. Depending on your own fitness level.

Your biggest day of walking on this trip will be in Kings Canyon, the walking here is with your guide. First you climb up the Canyon, in a section we call heart attack hill. There are 500 steps to climb, this can be done at your own pace. It’s a 75 degrees incline and should take about 30 mins. You then do the Kings Canyon Rim walk, around a 3 and a half hour hike. You will see the lost city, the water hole, and our main viewing points. Up on Kings Canyon its all rugged terrain but no climbing rocks. Again our pace isn’t rushed, so please take your time.

Cooktown Exploring

The Valley of the Winds walk at Kata Tjuta is a simple 1-2 hour walk done in the morning so out of the heat. The weather can be our main concern in the Red Centre, we ask you to constantly be drinking water and aim to do all walks out of the midday sun.

On this tour you will stay in our permanent tents, so a comfortable camping experience.

3 Day Uluru tour

Our 3 day Uluru tour from Alice Springs or Ayers Rock is also great for seniors. Not too long to be away from creature comforts and taking in the highlights on the region. Hop on board for the wonders of Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), and Watarrka (Kings Canyon).

3 Day Uluru tour.

For more about our Uluru tours check out our article: Best Uluru Tours.

Kimberley tours for seniors

We have many hikes on our Kimberley tours with walks daily. Please be aware on average 6-7km will be walked daily, over rough terrain. We will walk and hike to waterfalls often over rocky boulders. You will then swim in the pools, so a good confidence in the water is also required.

At night on our Kimberley tours, you will be sleeping in swags on the floor. True outback camping here! You can bring them into the tents for more comfort from the elements however you will need to be happy to get on and off the floor. We also ask you to help with the setup and pack down of the camp on tour and help the guides with some preparing of the food and washing up. So where possible you will need to be active enough to get stuck in with a multitude of tasks over the 10-day tour. Not a relaxing holiday on this trip, but well worth the adventure as the Kimberley is out of this world!

For 2022 we are filling fast and have limited space on our Kimberley trips.

Darwin Outback Tours start with the The Top End - Crocodile Cruise, Corroboree Billabong, Darwin Harbour Sunset Cruise, Litchfield National Park with Florence Falls, Wangi Falls and Giant Termite Mounds - Day 1 and Day 2 Tour Program

Become one of the hundreds of happy travellers that have made the journey with us through the centre of Australia. Today is a day on the different water ways of Darwin and surrounds. Start your tour with a drive to Corroboree Billabong , which is an important part of Mary River Wetland Ecosystem and home to an array of native birds. Enjoy a fantastic wetland cruise along banks lined with water lilies and lotus flowers. After lunch our next boat trip takes us down the murky waters of the Adelaide River. The original Jumping Crocodile Cruise is a great way of seeing crocs in their natural habitat.

We travel back to Darwin for some free time to refresh in the hotel pool, a walk on the esplanade or simply relaxation. Late afternoon we meet back for a Sunset Dinner Cruise on the Cape Adieu , a 21.6m motor sailing ketch. Try some delicious and freshly prepared food while cruising Darwin Harbour , a wonderful dining experience and a great way to finish day 1 of our Outback Tour. (Day 1 Overnight Novotel Esplanade Darwin, Lunch, Dinner)

Today we will spend a full day in Litchfield National Park . The Park has many attractions and with time on our side, we will enjoy the scenery, explore the waterfalls and walking trails. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the Northern Territory landscape are the termite mounds. Discover the Cathedral Termite mounds which are unique to the area with some of them being seven metres tall and over 100 years old. In addition, we see a group of picturesque Magnetic Termite Mounds . It is truly incredible that hundreds of mounds have been built by tiny little bugs using sand, saliva, and faeces.

Our next stop takes us to Florence Falls . The plunge pool is only a short walk away and a great place for a refreshing swim. One of Litchfield’s most popular landmarks is Wangi Falls . Join your guide for a walk through a monsoon forest and look out for local wildlife including colourful lizards, tree snakes, frogs, red-winged parrots, and kingfishers. A last swim at Wangi Falls has us fully refreshed and energized before heading back to Darwin. For dinner we drive out to the Fannie Bay Sailing Club , the local’s favourite sunset dinner destination. (Day 2 Overnight Novotel Esplanade, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Tour to Adelaide River, Edith Falls and Katherine, Marksie's Bush Camp Entertainment and Katherine Gorge Dreaming Sunset Cruise Day 3 and 4 Travel Itinerary

We leave Darwin behind, and our journey takes us south to the town called Adelaide River . The War Cemetery is the resting place of WWII service men and women, and it is the site of the only Australian war cemetery on Australian soil. Back on the bus we travel to Pine Creek. Originally the town was built to service the Overland Telegraph Line, but while digging holes for posts gold was found and soon led to the gold rush in 1871. We have a comfort stop here and head out to Leliyn / Edith Falls for relaxation and swimming in the main natural pool. The Edith River comes down from the Nitmuluk escarpment at Leliyn, creating the Top Pools and the idyllic plunge pool surrounded by lush Melaleuca and Pandanus trees . Enjoy floating with a pool noodle or swim to the waterfall base. If you love walking, join your guide on a walk along the Leliyn Trail to the summit. Take in the spectacular scenic views, marvel at the sandstone formations and soak in the crystal-clear upper pools. This is sure to be a full afternoon in paradise . From here Katherine is only a short 45-minute drive away and we will stay for the next two nights. Finish the day with an entertaining and delicious dinner under the stars at Marksie’s Bush Camp . (Day 3 Overnight Contour Hotel, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Stroll along the shops of Katherine and visit the fantastic Katherine Museum . The township is set on the Katherine River which flows through Nitmiluk National Park . In the afternoon we are destined for a Dreaming Sunset Dinner Cruise at Katherine Gorge . Sit back and relax as the tranquil surroundings take you into a spiritual world of the Jawoyn culture and history. Discover the stories and ways of the Jawoyn people against the magnificent backdrop of the Nitmiluk Gorge, changing colour with the setting sun. Our tour includes a three-course candlelight dinner , featuring fresh, local Australian produce cooked on board, and a complimentary glass of sparkling wine. (Day 4 Overnight Contour Hotel, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Travel to Mataranka, Daly Waters and Tennant Creek on Day 5 and 6

We travel further south to a small town called Mataranka , which was made famous by the novel “We of the Never Never” – a book written about nearby Elsey Station by Jeannie Gunn. The Mataranka Homestead Tourist Resort is our accommodation for tonight. Framed by two rivers and the serene Elsey National Park , the homestead is a great place to relax, and you will soon discover why so many travellers stay for several days. Swim in the crystal clear and sandy-bottomed thermal pool, sit back and immerse yourself in a truly relaxing atmosphere. (Day 5 Overnight Mataranka Motel, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

After a morning swim in the thermal pools, we leave the “Top End” and the trail of the giant termite nests. We stop at Daly Waters Historic Pub for a look around and some quirky photo opportunities before heading down to Tennant Creek for our overnight stay. (Day 6 Overnight Bluestone Motor Inn, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Devils' Marbles, Western MacDonnell Ranges and Free Time in Alice Springs on Day 7 to 10

We continue our journey to the giant rock formations of Devil’s Marbles . Stroll between the giant rounded boulders which are the result of millions of years of erosion and are a nature lovers’ and photographers’ delight. Then we pass through Barrow Creek and Aileron on our way to Alice Springs . For the next 4 nights we are staying at the Diplomat Motel superbly located in the centre of Alice Springs. Upon arrival we check into our newly renovated rooms and join back together for a restaurant dinner. (Day 7 Overnight Diplomat Motel, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Alice Springs is nestled in between the Western and Eastern MacDonnell Ranges and today we will explore the Western region. The panoramic landscapes are known for their sunburnt oranges, maroons and purple colours and our first visit takes us to Glen Helen Gorge. A permanent waterhole surrounded by towering red cliffs is the main feature of Glen Helen Gorge and home to a variety of water birds and fish. Then we visit the world heritage listed Ochre Pits , a colourful outcrop of ochre on the banks of a sandy creek. Ochre is an important part of Aboriginal Culture and this area is a registered sacred site. For lunch we travel to Standley Chasm , a narrow gap which was formed by rushing floodwaters over thousands of years ago. It is at its most dramatic around noon on a sunny day. Enjoy a walk through the chasm surrounded by fire-red walls up to 80m in height. On our return drive to Alice Springs we stop at the Telegraph Station . Enjoy a guided tour before heading back to our hotel in Alice Springs. (Day 8 Diplomat Motel, Breakfast, Lunch)

Enjoy two free days in Alice Springs . Visit the Women’s Hall of Fame or the Transport Hall of Fame. Check out the Desert Park, which is home to a vast range of plants and wildlife native to the area. Other great places to see are the School of the Air, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and several stunning art galleries. There is an opportunity to experience the breathtaking feeling of floating silently above the Outback as the sun slowly rises over the desert on a fabulous ballooning adventure. This optional activity will be available to you on the first free morning in Alice Springs. (Day 9/10 Overnight Diplomat Motel, Daily Breakfast included)

Iconic Tours to Kings Canyon include the Base Walk, Scenic Helicopter Flight, Indigenous Cultural Tour and the optional early morning walk - Day 11 and 12 Tour Program.

Today we drive to Kings Canyon , the biggest attraction inside Watarrka National Park. The canyon has been forged over 400 million years and is made from layers of sandstone with hard shale between the layers. Marvel at the sheer cliffs from the ground and absorb the surrounding nature on our easy walk into the base of the canyon . A bird’s eye view is the best way to see this amazing part of the Watarrka National Park. Our last activity for today has us all flying in a  scenic helicopter over the Canyon Rim , the “Lost City” and the “Garden of Eden”. It is a fabulous and exhilarating helicopter flight which completes a fantastic day at Kings Canyon. Tonight, we dine at the fabulous Outback Bar & Grill at the Kings Canyon Resort. (Day 11 Overnight Kings Canyon Resort, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Get up early and join your guide on a more challenging  Rim Walk at Kings Canyon . Explore Kings Canyon, a scenic landscape of rugged ranges, ancient sandstone walls, rock holes and gorges. If moderate walking is not for you, enjoy a leisurely morning at the resort. Feel and experience aboriginal culture up close with a tour led by members of the local indigenous community. Be taken on an authentic journey while learning about musical instruments, weapons, bush tucker and medicines. After an inspiring introduction to the local culture, we continue our journey to the most spectacular of indigenous sacred sites. Uluru -Ayers Rock is our destination today. It is the world’s largest monolith rising 348 metres above ground with a circumference of 9.2 kilometres. Upon arrival we check into our rooms for the next 3 nights. Refresh and meet back for a delightful buffet dinner at the Ilkari Restaurant. Taste some of the finest produce available under the Australian sun.   (Day 12 Overnight 5-star Sails in the Desert Hotel, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Experience Uluru at Sunset and Sunrise, Base Walk, Visit the Culture Centre plus time for optional Field of Light Experiences and Scenic Flights, Kata Tjuta Sunrise and Walpa Gorge - Tour Program on Day 13 and 14

Start the day with a sunrise breakfast at Kata Tjuta and witness the desert coming to life. Then we head off to explore the Kata Tjuta rocks, estimated to be over 500 million years old. The 36 weathered rock domes are another significant area for the indigenous – Anangu people. We follow a natural track between two of the tallest domes to a viewing platform at the end. Take in the beautiful surrounding scenery and listen to the sound of Walpa Gorge .

After lunch we get ready for a beautiful afternoon. Learn about musical instruments, weapons, bush tucker, and medicines at the  Culture Centre and view the many displays and incredible art before we head to Uluru . An early rise this morning for a sunrise breakfast near Uluru . Watch the changing colours of Uluru as the first sunlight of the day creep across the desert plains. Uluru is one of Australia’s most recognized natural landmarks and today is the time to take in the true magnitude of the rock, by a walk around the base . For those not wanting to take on the full journey, join your guide on several well selected and shorter walks at Uluru. Spend the afternoon with souvenir shopping, a visit to the local art gallery, museum, theatre or enjoy a relaxing nap or a treatment at the Red Ochre Spa. One of the best ways to experience Ulu r u and the domes of Kata Tju t a is from the air. This afternoon we give you the opportunity for an optional scenic helicopter flight .

Tonight’s dinner choice is yours . Try one of the many restaurants in town square and finish the night with a walk through the Field of Light. Or join the Field of Light Dinner with Outback Style canapes and sparkling wine or other drinks.  Experience the outback sky and the once in a lifetime Field of Light art installation of 50,000 illuminating glass spheres. For the more adventurous, explore the great Central Australian desert from the back of a camel, an unforgettable journey through red dune country with Uluru and Kata Tjuta as a stunning backdrop during sunset. (Day 14 Overnight 5-star Sails in the Desert Hotel, Breakfast, Lunch)

Tour to Coober Pedy, Woomera Rocket Range, Port Augusta and Adelaide - Travel Program for Day 15 to 18

A day to sit back and enjoy the passing scenery  as we leave the Northern Territory and venture into South Australia along the Stuart Highway. The road is named after John McDouall Stuart. Shifting sand dunes, salt and clay pans made this construction a tough assignment. We arrive in Coober Pedy and spend two nights and one full day here to explore this bizarre and unique town. (Day 15 Overnight Coober Pedy Lookout Cave, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

After a well-earned sleep in we head out for the day, exploring Coober Pedy and trying our luck in noodling. Only here can you arrive with just a shirt on and leave as one of the richest people in the world! Coober Pedy is known for underground living, a moon landscape and brilliant opal . We start with an Opal Mine tour and look at some amazing opal that has been found here. See how some of the locals lived and visit the Serbian underground church . Our next stop takes us to the golf course , a unique area to be playing golf. Then we go noodling , meaning we search for opal through mullock piles. Once you have found your first shiny piece, you will understand how easy it is to get opal fever .

Coober Pedy is truly unique and so are the people that live and lived here. Learn about Crocodile Harry and visit his eccentric and amusing home. Complete the town tour with the views from the Big Winch Lookout , views of the Blower Truck and the first tree ever seen in town. Late afternoon we drive out to the Kanku- Breakaways Conservation Park just on the outskirts of Coober Pedy. Step onto the red soil of South Australia’s Outback which looks like you have landed on Mars, fantastic photo opportunities here. Finish the day with a pizza dinner at the best pizza bar in town before retiring underground just like the locals do. (Day 16 Overnight Coober Pedy Lookout Cave, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Today we leave the opal township of Coober Pedy and make our way to Port Augusta. We stop at Woomera, the town which is known as the Woomera Rocket Range . Learn about famous Len Beadell who surveyed the site and stroll amongst the rockets and planes left behind by the British. Continue onto Port Augusta and enjoy the views at the Matthew Flinders Ranges Lookout during late afternoon light. We check into our accommodation for tonight and join back for our last group dinner. (Day 17 Overnight Standpipe Hotel, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

On our last day we walk one of the many walking trails in the Arid Lands Botanical Gardens . Beautiful plants and birdlife as well as a great souvenir shop for last minute gifts. We drive to Port Germein with time to stroll along the once longest wooden jetty of the Southern Hemisphere. We take on the final journey to Adelaide, but not without a stop at Lake Bumbunga . The lake is known to change colour from pink, to white, to blue, depending on the salinity of the water throughout the year and a fabulous opportunity for a final group photograph. We arrive in Adelaide around 4pm. (Day 18 Breakfast, Lunch)

From the minute I first rang to make enquiries to the final drop off at the end of our trip, Australian Iconic Tours could not have been more helpful. This is a first rate small tour group operator and certainly great value for money. Would definitely travel with them again and can’t recommend them enough

Having recently returned from doing the Darwin to Adelaide trip with Australian Iconic Tours my husband and I have nothing but praise for this company. From the excellent transport to the great meals, nothing was an effort and then to be able to sit back and take in this wonderful country of ours. What a great trip and a great company to do it with. Thoroughly enjoyable!

Just wanted to thank you both for a wonderful tour of Central Australia. I visited places I have never visited before, travelled with a good group of people and loved every minute of the tour. The memories will be shared many times over. A big thanks to you – your itinerary and ability to ensure all the arrangements ran smoothly is commendable. A special thanks to Flick for her safe driving, great knowledge of the areas we travelled, for introducing us to some real Aussie characters, for keeping our best interests at heart, her friendliness and assistance throughout the tour, and of course her terrific sense of humour.
