ASP World Tour

The World Surfing Champion is a title awarded annually to the best competition surfer for the year, today based on points earned for placings at events on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) ASP World Tour . A qualification system decides who can compete on the tour, for a total of 44 men (the top 44 as they're called) and 16 women.

The earliest world titles were amateur events decided by a single event, open to all comers, and were held only intermittently. The first was at [[Manly, New South Wales Manly in Sydney in 1964. The second was held in Lima, Peru in 1965.

From 1973 to 1975, there was no amateur championship held. The International Surfing Federation had been unable to establish a format or sponsorship and concurrent with this the new professional era was dawning.

1968 World Champion Fred Hemmings, retired from competition and began his career as an event promoter and ran the Smirnoff Rip Curl World Pro/Am that became the defacto professional World Championship from 1970 through 1975. The winners were; 1970: Nat Young (Australia), 1971: Gavin Rudolph (South Africa), 1972: Paul Neilsen (Australia), 1973: Ian Cairns (Australia), 1974: Reno Abellira (Hawaii) and 1975: Mark Richards (Australia).

In 1976 the International Professional Surfing (IPS) organisation was formed by the 1968 champion, turned promoter, Fred Hemmings . It put together an annual tour of 12 events around the world with a points system for event placings to decide a ratings winner at the end. This is the format used today by the ASP.

Peter Townend and Ian Cairns devised the points scoring system, shamelessly (as PT put it) appropriating the way Formula One motor racing did it. Townend also ended up the winner that first year (1976) with Cairns finishing in second.

In early years the title brought honour but only modest financial rewards in extra sponsorship etc, and not all professional surfers had it as their goal. In 1979 for instance when Mark Richards won he hadn't even attended all the events, reckoning it better to concentrate on his board shaping business than travel for the South African leg.

In 1982, following a less than positive experience with the IPS at the new Op Pro, Ian Cairns formed the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) which crowned its first champion, Tom Carroll , in 1983. The ASP continues as the worldwide sanctioning body for professional surfing.

In 1999, Mark Occhilupo 's win was a remarkable comeback. He'd been on the tour about 10 years earlier but had abandoned it, then returned stronger than ever.

In 2001 the ASP cut the tour short after the World Trade Center attacks of 9/11 , on surfers' fears for their safety at competitions. The ratings leader C. J. Hobgood was declared the championship winner.

As with almost every any sport there's an element of fortune needed in surfing competitions. The competition format, types of waves and human judging all have an effect, which leaves plenty of room for speculation about excellent surfers who never won a title, or could have won more.

Mark Richards ' record of 4 titles above and below 1979 to 1983 stood until 1997 when Kelly Slater took his 5th. It was joked that it'd taken so long Richards was scarcely remembered by young fans and was known to them only as "that guy whose record Kelly beat". Slater's 7th win in 2005 made him both the youngest and oldest champion.

Frieda Zamba , Wendy Botha and Lisa Anderson all took 4 women's titles. Anderson was followed by dominance and 6 titles by Layne Beachley .

Tour of Heroes: Blazor WebAssembly Standalone App

• DemoCoreWeb with "Tour of Heroes" built on different platforms

"Tour of Heroes" is the  official tutorial app of Angular 2+ . The app contains some functional features and technical features which are common when building a real-world business application talking to Web API:

• A few screens presenting tables and nested data
• Data binding
• CRUD  operations over a backend, and optionally through a generated client API
• Unit testing and integration testing

In this series of articles, I will demonstrate the programmer experiences of various frontend development platforms when building the same functional features: "Tour of Heroes", a fat client talking to a backend.

The frontend apps on Angular, Aurelia, React, Vue, Xamarin and MAUI are talking to the same ASP.NET (Core) backend through generated client APIs. To find the other articles in the same series, please search " Tour of Heroes " in  my articles . And at the end of the series, some technical factors of programmer experiences will be discussed:

Choosing a development platform involves a lot of non-technical factors which won't be discussed in this series.

Introduction

It is assumed that you have already walked through the first few chapters of ASP.NET Core Blazor documentation , and have played the WeatherForecast app through the scaffolding codes as well as the todolist demo .

This article is focused on Blazor WebAssembly standalone app running in a Web browser, with functionality of "Tour of Heroes", talking to an ASP.NET Core Web API backend.

Demo Repository

Checkout  DemoCoreWeb  in GitHub, and focus on the following areas:

Core3WebApi

ASP.NET Core Web API csproj provides only Web APIs, including Heroes API.

Blazor Heroes

Blazor Web Assembly standalone app.

DemoCoreWeb  was established for testing NuGet packages of  WebApiClientGen,  and demonstrating how to use the library in real world projects. And the generated client API codes in C# can be utilized in a Web browser via WebAssembly.

Using the code

Prerequisites.

• Core3WebApi.csproj  has NuGet package  Fonlow.WebApiClientGenCore  imported.
• Add  CodeGenController.cs  to  Core3WebApi.csproj .
• Core3WebApi.csproj  includes  CodeGen.json . This is optional, just for the convenience of running some PowerShell script to generate client APIs.
• CreateWebApiClientApi3.ps1 . This is optional. This script will launch the Web API on Kestrel and post the data in  CodeGen.json .

Generate Client API

Run  CreateWebApiClientApi3.ps1 , the generated codes will be written to  CoreWebApi.ClientApi .

• Depending on your CI/CD process, you may adjust item 3 and 4 above. For more details, please check: " Generate C# Client API for ASP.NET Core Web API " . The repository has the client API codes generated already.

Data Models and API Functions

• Copy some server side attributes to the client side. And for TypeScript codes, the attributes may be transformed to JsDoc for TypeScript .
• Some validation attributes may be transformed to Angular Reactive Forms.

Dependency Injection of HttpClient

While HttpClient has implemented IDisposable, however often Microsoft would advise not to instantiate it for a HTTP request then dispose, depending on the application host. Instead, use dependency injection  of Blazor so the host will manage the lifecycle of a HttpClient instance.

The sample codes with this article follow the advices from " Call a Web API from ASP.NET Core Blazor ", utilizing both named HttpClient and typed HttpClient.

The generated client API codes support typed HttpClient through DI:

.NET runtime can inject a HttpClient instance and a scoped JsonSerializerOptions instance to the container class "Heroes".

According to " Call a Web API from ASP.NET Core Blazor ":

Quote: HttpClient  is implemented using the browser's  Fetch API  and is subject to its limitations, including enforcement of the same-origin policy, which is discussed later in this article in the  Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS)  section.

In addition to the limitations mentioned, the actual operations of " System.Net.Http.HttpClient " in a Web browser are subject to other limitations of JavaScript when handling integral numbers larger than 53-bit, as discussed in these articles:

To support Int64 (long), the Core3WebApi utilizes  Int64JsonConverter

The Web API will then respond with a JSON string object for Int64 rather than rather than a JSON number object.

On the client side built on Blazor WebAssembly, the same converter class is needed:

Otherwise, there will be runtime error in the browser:

After the scoped JsonSerializatioOptions is injected to both named HttpClient and typed HttpClient (Heroes client API) by the WebAssembly runtime, the standalone app can handle Int64 gracefully since you have enjoyed strongly typed coding with Int64.

Mapping the seafloor

The oceans cover over 70% of the Earth’s surface. The marine ecosystem is the largest and most abundant in the world. But most of the ocean is permanently dark and incredibly difficult to observe. As of 2022, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had mapped slightly more than 23% of the seafloor in great detail, and even less has been explored with underwater cameras or submersibles. Mapping the seafloor is the first step in exploring the unknown depths of our global ocean.

What is sonar?

Sonar stands for sound navigation and ranging. There are two main types of sonar: active sonar and passive sonar. Active sonar systems emit a pulse of sound into the water, which then bounces off the seafloor, creating an echo. Seafloor depth is calculable using the time difference between creating a sound and receiving its echo.

NOAA Ocean Exploration is an organization dedicated to exploring the deep ocean and filling the gaps in our understanding of the world’s deep waters.

Scientists and governments around the world recognize the importance of making a high-resolution global map of the seafloor. An international collaboration called the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project aims to produce a high-resolution global map of the seafloor by 2030. It has been calculated that it would take one ship nearly 1,000 years to map the entire ocean at all water depths.

Why is it important?

NOAA scientists say a global seafloor map will benefit us all. We will be able to accurately view the entirety of the Earth’s surface for the first time. Having this data layer will improve global prediction models related to weather and climate, tsunami impact zones and sea-level rise. Countries will be able to prioritize conservation efforts to improve fish stocks and coral reefs. Seeing the seafloor with such clarity will reveal more information than we can imagine.

Answer: C. The population has been declining since 2010. They feed at or near the surface, which makes them very vulnerable to ship strikes, one of the leading causes of their mortality.

Answer: D. Blue whales weigh up to 330,000 pounds. Fin whales weigh 80,000 to 160,000 pounds, Minke whales weighs up to 20,000 pounds and Cuvier’s beaked whale weigh 4,000 to 6,800 pounds. The blue whale is the largest animal on Earth. They are endangered. One way to protect them and other whales is to report whale sightings using a Whale Alert App .

Answer: B. Sperm whales are regarded as the loudest animals on the planet, capable of making sounds up to 230 decibels, louder than jet engines, which are about 150 decibels.

Ocean zones

Most ocean life lives above a depth of 660 feet. Nuclear submarines hover around 850 feet below the surface. Whales aren’t usually seen below about 8,200 feet. The Titanic can be found at 12,467 feet.

The deepest part of the ocean is called the Challenger Deep and is located beneath the western Pacific Ocean in the southern end of the Mariana Trench, which runs several hundred miles southwest of the U.S. territorial island of Guam. Challenger Deep is approximately 7 miles deep. It is named after the HMS Challenger, whose crew first sounded the depths of the trench in 1875.

According to National Geographic, if you were to put Mount Everest at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, its peak would still sit around 7,000 feet below sea level.

Even at the very bottom, life exists. In 2005, tiny single-celled organisms called foraminifera, a type of plankton, were discovered in the Challenger Deep.
