Hometown heroes Wilco launched their spring tour with the first of a three-night stand at the Riviera Theatre on Thursday. Jeff Tweedy and his bandmates will complete the series this weekend, with an enticement for devotees attending all three concerts: An entirely different show is promised each night.

The self-imposed restriction meant that audience members might not get a heavy dose of tracks from Wilco’s “Cruel Country” album on Thursday. The sprawling double album’s “I Am My Mother” was nonetheless a highlight early in the set, with imagery of migrants seeking better lives. On title track, Tweedy expressed a childlike love for his homeland without omitting wry reflection on its faults. “All you have to do is sing in the choir, set yourself on fire every once in a while,” he sang.

Multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone played a supple guitar solo straight from Laurel Canyon during the new “Bird Without a Tail / Base of My Skull,” while guitarist Nels Cline channeled the Byrds’ Roger McGuinn on 12-string electric guitar.

Despite Tweedy’s roots in alternative country, the experimental and evolving Wilco has long resisted categorization as a country band. Twenty-eight years following its debut album “A.M.,” Wilco embraced the format when playing material from “Cruel Country.” Drummer Glenn Kotche played a lively two-step beat for “A Lifetime to Find,” while Cline played weeping lap steel. Tweedy’s lyric imagined a conversation during a surprise visit by Death. “I can see you’ve done your best,” says the Grim Reaper as jolly music unfolds, adding that there’s no point in delay. “It’s too late for regrets; I am here to collect.”

Tweedy set a lighthearted tone by announcing that the band would present a golden “Best Behaved — Wilco Tour 2023” statuette to a member of the audience.

“There’s a lot at stake tonight,” said Tweedy. “More so for you than us.” The prize ultimately went to super fan Paul Suwan. “Paul’s been to more Wilco shows than there have been Wilco shows,” said Tweedy.

Weekend ticketholders can flood the band’s online request portal for chances to hear the disarming “Cruel Country” song “Falling Apart (Right Now),” which went unsung on Thursday. However, the band’s 12 albums provided plenty of strong material for the evening.

It was a lucky night for fans of 1996 sophomore album “Being There,” with six songs on the menu, including a soulful version of the lovesick “Say You Miss Me.” Wilco encored with hot versions of “I Got You (At the End of the Century)” and “Monday.” The latter was infused with an extra measure of Mott the Hoople-styled glam rock.

2004’s “A Ghost is Born” was also well-represented. John Stirratt’s loping bass propelled the breezy “Handshake Drugs,” which ignited when Cline threw licks like showers of electrical sparks. The jaunty “Hummingbird” earned one of the concert’s biggest audience singalongs. “Theologians” initially misfired, but the opening night snag became a treat.

Nels Cline and the rest of Wilco opened their three-night residency at the Riviera Theatre on Thursday.

The band then offered a glimpse into what a studio rehearsal might encompass. Tweedy conferred briefly with his bandmates before saying good-naturedly, “We’ll just try it again.” The rebooted song went without a hitch. “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” chestnut “Ashes of American Flags” followed, crowned by a transcendent jam.

The gentle and melancholy “She’s a Jar” was made all the more Dylanesque by Tweedy’s neck-mounted harmonica. “I can’t help but feel like you’re humoring me a little bit when you cheer for the harmonica,” said Tweedy in jest afterward. “It’s condescending. Four notes. Anyone can do it.”

Late in the main set, Tweedy paused to take a hand count of people who would be attending all three shows at the Riv. Noting that it wasn’t unanimous, Tweedy dryly asked why the band bothered learning three different sets. “Just between us, this is the only good set list,” he said, deadpan. “It’s really not looking good for the next couple of nights.”

Opening the show was youthful Chicago trio Horsegirl, who joined a cavernous post-punk and shoegaze sound with melody while performing material from 2022’s “Versions of Modern Performance.” Threads connecting to bands like Ride, Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine and Pavement were evident in songs including “Anti-glory” and “Billy.”

Wilco mesmerizes Clearwater crowd at first Tampa Bay show in 10 years

  • Gabrielle Calise Times staff

CLEARWATER — When the members of Wilco first bounded onto the stage Thursday night, roughly 1,700 adoring fans stood to cheer and greet the band.

Then most of them sat right back down.

Maybe it was the elegant performing arts hall venue, or the presence of a more mature audience (all the dads in town who hadn’t instead bought tickets to the Drive-By Truckers show in St. Pete).

Either way, it was clear the crowd was eager to soak it all in, and for good reason. It’s been a decade since the Chicago alt-country rockers performed in the Tampa Bay area.

For the first two-thirds of the show, the audience watched Wilco with a joyful yet subdued reverence, refraining from singing too loudly or even pulling out their phones to snap more than the occasional photo. A few particularly intense guitar solos inspired some dudes to rise from the sea of the seated and fist pump. Those who remained with their butts in Ruth Eckerd Hall’s green velvet chairs still found ways to rock out, toes tapping and heads bobbing.

The band ran through roughly two dozen songs, reaching far back to cuts from the ’90s as well as newer songs from their latest project, 2022′s “Cruel Country.” Throughout the two-hour show, the group remained committed to getting the crowd to move.

“You having a good time? I want to make sure,” singer Jeff Tweedy said. “You’re one of those audiences that can’t seem to decide...Hopefully you’ll figure it out by the end.”

While the band’s nearly 11-minute epic “Spiders (Kidsmoke)” unfurled, Tweedy egged the crowd on, gesturing with open arms.

“It’s yours if you want it,” he said.

Wilco shined brightest during these longer numbers, when they had space to build up songs into face-melting moments. Guitarist Nels Cline treated the audience to numerous solos that left his whole body convulsing, his bangs flopping and knees knocking as he riffed.

During “Sunken Treasure,” the band ricocheted between pensive verses and chaos. During the latter, red lights flashed over the clatter of piano keys, squealing guitars and Glenn Kotche wailing on his drums as hard as he could. Then Tweedy brought it back down to earth, singing softly “Music is my savior/ I was maimed by rock and roll.”

Opening band, The A’s, provided another highlight of the evening. The pair — Sylvan Esso’s Amelia Meath and Daughter of Swords’ Alexandra Sauser-Monnig — spent 30 minutes harmonizing in matching pink ruffled gowns, mostly singing a cappella.

The cadence of their songs verged into nursery rhyme territory at points, but remained hypnotizing and lovely even while the duo sang about death. The audience’s claps and whistles grew louder with each tune.

Wilco has made a tradition of awarding a trophy to the best-behaved fan of the evening (for everyone else, the merch table sold red and blue participation ribbons for $15). In Clearwater, Tweedy struggled to pick just one worthy recipient.

“I’m going to need the lights up, because there’s a lot of competition tonight,” he joked.

The band disappeared before returning for an encore: “The Late Greats,” “Heavy Metal Drummer,” and one final singalong, “A Shot in the Arm.”

By the end, just about everyone was up and dancing.

Wilco Kicks Off Spring Tour at Chicago’s Riviera Theater

The restless ambition of alt-country heroes Wilco is on full display as the band kicked off their 2023 tour last night (March 24). The band took over Chicago’s Riviera Theater for the first of a three-night residency that will launch Wilco into their extensive 2023 touring schedule. This marks one of three short residencies Wilco will be taking part in to kick off this spring outing, the next two will have the band staying three nights in Port Chester, New York, and Reykjavík, Iceland. The kicker to these residencies is that Wilco promised to never perform the same song twice during their stay, making for career-spanning setlists like the one we saw last night.

Last night’s setlist had Wilco bouncing around their discography that spans decades with a primary focus on their older material. The night kicked off with “Less Than You Think” from the band’s 2004 album A Ghost Is Born . The band also performed “Hummingbird”, “Handshake Drugs”, and “Theologians” from the LP. The album that got the most attention was their seminal sophomore LP Being There , Wilco lifted six of the 23 songs performed from the 1996 release. They pulled hits from the album like “Forget The Flowers” while also playing B-sides like “The Lonely 1”. Wilco then divided their attention to the rest of their discography, performing songs from their Billy Bagg collaborations (“California Stars”) and Alpha Mike Foxtrot rarities compilation (“Cars Can’t Escape”).

This current tour has Wilco traversing the globe to promote their 2022 album Cruel Country . Once the aforementioned residences wrap up, the band will be hitting venues across the southern states of America with stops in Florida, Nashville, and Georgia. Check out the full setlist, tour dates, and footage from their first night at the Riviera Theater below:

Jeff Tweedy of Wilco performing at Kentish Town Forum.

Wilco review – venerated band remain startlingly brilliant alt-rock greats

02 Kentish Town Forum, London Jeff Tweedy is initially a little distant with his devoted audience, but the chemistry between the group soon ignites

W ilco, after 29 years, hold a special place in the hearts of the people for whom it’s all about the music, man. The air of veneration in a packed Forum is palpable, even if leader Jeff Tweedy seems not to welcome it. After one fan shouts out his appreciation, Tweedy murmurs into the mic, not aggressively, but not without a degree of sarcasm: “This is the part of the show I enjoy, where I get to speak to each of you individually.”

For the first half of this two-hour gig, it’s a little like watching an expensively assembled football team roll over some lesser opposition: everything is plainly brilliant, everyone knows exactly what they are doing, every element is in its place, but it also feels a little inevitable, and because of that just a little uninvolving. It’s not boring – these are fantastic songs, played fantastically well – more that this is what Wilco do. The band just play; Tweedy makes no effort to communicate.

But then, at the midpoint, something changes, with Bird Without a Tail/Base of My Skull, from last year’s Cruel Country album. What starts as folk rock gradually evolves, and the communication between the sextet starts to spark and burn. The interaction between the three guitarists – Tweedy, the excellent Nels Cline, and Patrick Sansone – dazzles, and the song soars. It’s entrancing – dramatic without being aggressive.

From then on, it’s like watching Brazil in 1970: blimey, this lot are startlingly brilliant. Tweedy relaxes, and the band intensify. When they play Misunderstood, from their breakthrough second album Being There, the crowd take over from Tweedy to roar back the line: “You still love rock’n’roll.” Evicted, from the forthcoming album Cousin, gets a cheer of recognition.

after newsletter promotion

Support act Courtney Marie Andrews comes on for the encores, but she leaves before the dazzling finale of Spiders (Kidsmoke), its motorik pulse a foundation for screes of noise from Cline and Tweedy that resolve into a crushing riff. Towards the end the band go silent, and Tweedy directs the crowd to keep time by clapping, then to sing that riff. They do so, in unison, before the band come crashing back in to claim their rightful plaudits.

Let's just drop any pretense or superlative filled narrative and cut right to the bottom line: Wilco is the world's greatest rock band. Period. Sampling from their entire back catalog and the current Ode to Joy they mesmerized the Heinz Hall audience for over 2 hours. And it was indeed a joy to be sitting in the Orchestra Pit right in front of the amazing Nels Cline!

These guys are an astonishing act to see live. Consummate professionals with excellent songs, incredible musicianship and a wonderful rapport with their audience, Wilco have zero rock and roll pretension and all of the "big show" quality you expect from a legend. Best of all they always have new stuff to mix in with their extensive back catalogue. Few artists can boast such a deep base of good songs to pull from. Wilco plays a great show, up there with the best I've seen. Bruce Springsteen and George Clinton are the only artists that give this same value.

jhardycarroll’s profile image

Amazing show, as usual. As Tweedy admitted, possibly the best London gig they ever had. This time around, audience was somehow awake and actually took part into the show.

Glenn was amazing and Pat Sansone could actually play floss if he was asked to. Can't wait for next gig!

Wilco Bask In ‘Hot Sun' On New EP

Wilco will release a new digital EP, Hot Sun Cool Shroud , on June 28 to coincide with its long-running Solid Sound festival taking place that same weekend at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Ma. The six-song project features material recorded but not completed during sessions for the band’s 2023 album Cousin .

"It’s fun to have something new to release at Solid Sound," Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy says. "This year weʼre putting out an EP with a summertime-after-dark kind of feeling. It starts off pretty hot, like heat during the day, has some instrumentals on it that are a little agitated and uncomfortable and ends with a cooling breeze. There are tracks on Hot Sun Cool Shroud that are more aggressive and angular than anything weʼve put out in a while, and a song about love melting you like ice cream into a puddle of sugary soup. All the pieces of summer, including the broody cicadas."

A unique white vinyl pressing of Hot Sun Cool Shroud will be available only at Solid Sound, comprised of images from Kathleen Ryan’s “Bad Fruit” series. At the festival, fans will be able to design their own cover by using ink stamps and stickers with Ryan’s fruit sculptures, with one fan-submitted cover to be chosen for the physical release later this year.

Tweedy told SPIN last year an EP of extra material would likely be forthcoming from the Cousin sessions, which were produced by fellow musician Cate Le Bon. “I don’t ever think anything’s wasted,” he said. “I just start thinking about another Wilco record. I'll probably review things and see if anything sounds really fresh to me. Sometimes nothing does. Sometimes it's like, oh God, now I know what to do with that! Often songs don't end up on a record not because they didn't turn out great, but because they just don't fit. I think that there’s probably an EP’s worth of the Cate-involved stuff that still is worth putting out.”

Drummer Glenn Kotche also told SPIN at the time that the unfinished songs were “very much of the same Cousin vibe. Cate had to make tough decisions, and so did Jeff. I would have included some of those. I might have had a different track list if it were up to me, because some of them do fit in, and there are some I really liked and felt strongly about.”

At Solid Sound, Wilco will be joined by Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Wednesday, Dry Cleaning, Nick Lowe & Los Straitjackets, Horsegirl, Ratboys and Water From Your Eyes. The band will play multiple headline sets during the weekend, while Tweedy and fellow members Kotche, Nels Kline, John Stirratt and Mikael Jorgensen will perform either solo or with other musicians. Iris Dement, Soul Glo, Ratboys, Courtney Marie Andrews, Young Fresh Fellows and a Sylvan Esso DJ set round out the musical lineup.

Here is the track list for Hot Sun Cool Shroud :

3. Ice Cream

4. Annihilation

5. Inside the Bell Bones

World Within A Song

For years we called it “Book 3”. Now it’s more formally named WORLD WITHIN A SONG : Music That Changed My Life and Life That Changed My Music. “ WWAS” for short.

Whatever you call it, Jeff Tweedy’s 3rd book available now via Dutton. Order here!

When we asked Jeff about the book, he said:  “I want to talk about songs that gave me permission to be creative…to be myself. To say something that was hard to say. I’ll be telling stories from my life, focusing on a true-to-memory style of how it really felt to me, how I experienced things emotionally. And then I want to talk about music in the same way. I want to talk about music in a way that it rarely gets talked about. I want to talk about the world within the song.”

Cruel Country physical!

Wilco’s new album, Cruel Country , is available now on vinyl and CD.

Available on 2-LP (black and color vinyl) or 2-CD. Both feature 21 songs including early fan favorite, “ A Lifetime to Find ,” which was shared via a spo0oooky new music video!

Wilco’s 12th album has had a heck of a ride so far. Originally given digitally to Solid Sound participants for free, followed by a digital release May 27 (the same day the band performed it live in its entirety at the festival). Lauded by NYT as Wilco’s “understated Magnum Opus” and later released on Record Store Day as a white label CD. Now it lands in good company on the best of 2022 lists from Rolling Stone ,  Variety , Spin , Uproxx , and  Paste AND its long awaited physical release is nearly here!

Don’t Let Me Down

C’mon america.

We know what you’re thinking. The answer is: No, Jeff doesn’t stop making music.

Which means you’re in luck, because there are two new tracks available now as part of Sub Pop’s Singles Club.

“C’mon America,” the A-side,  is from an unreleased group of songs with mostly sci-fi lyrics. Meanwhile “UR-60 Unsent,” the B-side, is a pitiful tale of an unsent lovesick mixtape, taken from a separate batch of unreleased songs with mostly pitiful lyrics.

Share The Wealth , a spankin’ new, multi-faceted document played by a sublimely-expanded edition of my long-standing combo called The Nels Cline Singers is out now.

“Anyone out there hankering for a rather elaborate elucidation of sonic architecture in the jazz/rock/improv universe at this time? I hope so, but I truly understand if not. Creations get created and plans to provide these creations to you, the ardent listeners, get planned, and so here I am/we are with Share The Wealth . I am, in spite of so many concerning non-musical occurrences that assail us all at this time, truly happy and proud to announce the imminent release of this double album.” – NC
