2023-2024 Academic Catalog

First-year application process, transfer application process, international student application process, adult degree programs/continuing studies, evaluation and acceptance, returning whitworth students, alternative credit, running start policy, deferred admission, admission of part-time students, campus visits.

http://www.whitworth.edu/admissions

Our primary goal in the admissions process is to identify students who demonstrate the academic promise and personal traits to succeed at Whitworth University. A college preparatory curriculum is recommended for entrance, though no specific classes are required. The relative strength of each student’s academic performance is strongly considered in admissions decisions.

Whitworth admits students without regard to age, race, color, religion, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation or disability.

Application

You may apply online at www.whitworth.edu/apply  or through the Common Application at commonapp.org . No fee is required.

We require a high school transcript that shows courses taken, grades earned and your current cumulative grade-point average. Whitworth weights the GPA of honors, AP, IB and Cambridge classes for students whose high schools do not provide a weighted GPA.

Optional ACT/SAT/CLT Exams

Whitworth is a test-optional school, and applicants may choose to apply without standardized test scores. For students who would like their test scores reviewed in the application process, we will consider the applicant's SAT, ACT or CLT superscore (composite of the highest subscore of each section of the test – potentially from multiple test dates). There is no preference for one test over another.

Optional Academic Recommendation

Academic recommendation(s) are accepted but not required for admission. Students may request that a teacher or counselor submit a recommendation letter or the recommendation form available online at www.whitworth.edu/academic-rec-form .

Students who have completed a full term of coursework at an accredited college or university after graduating from high school should apply with the Whitworth Transfer Application ( www.whitworth.edu/apply ) or Common Application ( commonapp.org ). No application fee is required.

Transfer applicants should submit transcripts from all colleges attended. Academic recommendation(s) are accepted but not required. Students may request that a professor or advisor submit a recommendation letter or the recommendation form available online at www.whitworth.edu/academic-rec-form . In some situations, we may contact applicants for transfer admission and request a high school transcript.

Qualified students who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States are encouraged to apply for admission. International students should complete either the Common Application ( commonapp.org ) or the Whitworth Application ( www.whitworth.edu/apply ). No application fee is required. Students should include with their application transcripts in the original language and certified English translations of transcripts. Academic recommendation(s) are accepted but not required for international student admission.

Whitworth requires standardized test scores to prove English fluency. We are test flexible, and students may submit official results from any one of the following tests: ACT, SAT, IB SL or HL exams, O Level exams, TOEFL or IELTS. Minimum scores or grades are as follows: SAT reading/writing subscore of 500; ACT English 24; IB SL English grade of 5; IB HL English grade of 4; O Level English B or higher; ibTOEFL 79; IELTS 6.5; or Duolingo English Test score of 105.

Upon admission to Whitworth, international students are required to provide certification of finances and an official bank statement showing funds available, no more than three months old. For more information, please visit www.whitworth.edu/international-admissions  or contact the Whitworth Office of International Admissions.

See Adult Degree Programs.

Each application is carefully and holistically reviewed before a prospective student is granted admission to the university. Grade-point average, course rigor, test scores (if provided), teacher/counselor recommendations (if provided), quality of writing sample, extracurricular participation and leadership are all considered in the decision process.

First-Year Application Deadlines

Students interested in Whitworth University are encouraged to apply for early action admission (nonbinding). There are two early action deadline dates. Early Action I is Nov. 15 and Early Action II is Jan. 15. Students who submit all documents prior to either one of the early action deadlines will be notified of Whitworth’s admissions decision within three weeks. The priority deadline for regular admission is March 1.

Transfer Application Deadlines

Transfer students interested in Whitworth University are encouraged to apply for early action admission (nonbinding). There are two early action deadline dates. Early Action I is Jan. 15 and Early Action II is March 1. Transfer applicants who submit all documents prior to the either one of the early action deadlines will be notified of Whitworth’s admissions decision within three weeks. The priority deadline for regular transfer admission is July 1.

Enrollment Deposit

To accept Whitworth’s offer of admission, please submit your enrollment deposit at www.whitworth.edu/deposit . This deposit will hold your place in the new class, and students who deposit earlier may receive priority consideration for housing and class registration.

All enrolling first-year students are required to submit a final official high school transcript to the admissions office upon completion of high school. Official transcripts are also required for coursework completed at any college or university.

Students applying to return to Whitworth after withdrawing from the university may do so online at www.whitworth.edu/apply . Submit to the admissions office official college transcripts from each college attended during your absence from Whitworth. Students with an academic restriction (probation or suspension) should contact the Whitworth Academic Affairs Office (509.777.3203), and students with financial holds on their accounts should contact Whitworth Student Accounting Services (509.777.3209).

A maximum of 32 alternative semester credits (48 quarter credits) may be counted toward graduation. Alternative credit includes Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) degree courses, College Level Examination Program (CLEP) credit, and DANTES credit, based on completion of advanced work, portfolios, and credit for military service and schools. Alternative course credit is calculated as part of the transfer-credit limit of 94. Contact the registrar’s office for more information.

Dual enrollment credits are college credits that have been earned prior to graduation from high school, on the campus of either a college or a high school (in partnership with a sponsoring college or university). Running Start is an example of a dual enrollment program, though similar programs have different names in many states. High school students with dual enrollment credits are considered first-year students as long as they attempt no university-level coursework after high school graduation. Students with dual enrollment credits must meet first-year application deadlines and Whitworth's first-year admissions requirements, and qualified students will be eligible to receive a first-year University Scholarship. Dual enrollment and Running Start credits are accepted as transfer credits based on receipt of official academic transcripts from the college attended or the college sponsoring the course. Courses in which a student has received a grade lower than "C," vocational/technical courses, non-college-level courses and incomplete courses are not transferable. A maximum of 64 semester credits (96 quarter credits) may be transferred from dual enrollment credits.

Students may apply for admission during any academic year, and, if admitted, may defer their admission and attendance at Whitworth for up to two semesters. If students delay longer than the two semesters, they must submit a new application for admission. Deferment is granted on a case-by-case basis. If you attend another institution and earn college credit during your deferment period, you must reapply to Whitworth with the Whitworth Transfer Application or the Common Application.

Students enrolled for fewer than 12 semester credits (undergraduate) or six semester credits (graduate) are considered part time. The part-time-student classification can be on a credit or audit basis. Students seeking a graduate degree or planning to complete an undergraduate degree on a part-time basis (usually through courses taken in the evening) should contact the Whitworth Graduate & Continuing Studies Office for information on degree options and admission procedures. Part-time undergraduate students not seeking a degree from Whitworth may not be required to complete the formal admission process; please contact the registrar’s office to be directed to the appropriate department.

There's no better way to discover whether Whitworth is the right place for you than to experience campus for yourself. Visitors have the opportunity to tour the campus, sit in on classes, attend an admissions/financial aid presentation, spend a night in a residence hall, and connect with faculty, students and coaches. Whitworth offers a variety of one-day, overnight and virtual visit options; learn more about visiting campus and register for your visit at www.whitworth.edu/visit .

Major: Communication & Technology, Linguistics

Favorite College Courses: Greek I, Intro to Logic, Silent Film, Web Design and Usability

Favorite Thing About Whitworth: The people here are loving, caring, unafraid to ask or address difficult questions, aware of their faults and always learning. It's the combination of embracing the messiness of different people and opinions while fostering growth and unity that amazes me about the culture here.

Free-for-All: I'm a musician and singer. Music has been a constant in my life, from classical piano lessons starting at five years old to band and choir in high school and leading worship in college. Now, once in a while I'll perform at an open mic, and I might record some music someday.

10 helpful tips for tourists in Moscow

Tourists in front of the Moscow University building

Tourists in front of the Moscow University building

1. Use the subway & other public transportation

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station

Moscow is notorious for its traffic jams. Sometimes, you can drive a kilometer for an hour, stuck in the capital's traffic. Therefore, the best option for tourists is to use the subway, buses, trams and, in the summer, rent electric scooters or bicycles.

To rent a bike, register in advance on the ‘Velobike’ website . There will be a map of bicycle parking lots and other useful information.

Electric scooters can also be rented via three apps. It is better to register on all of them at once and choose the scooter nearest to you. ‘Whoosh’ , ‘Urent’ or ‘Yandex Go’ . Prices in them are almost the same (approx. $0.10 per minute plus a $0.55 unlock fee).

Remember to be careful and follow all traffic rules.

2. Buy a ‘ Troika ’ transportation card

You can use Troika even in river tram terminals

You can use Troika even in river tram terminals

If you are going to use public transportation, it is best to buy a ‘Troika’ transportation card. Its balance can be topped up at a metro terminal or via the ‘MosMetro’ app. With the help of a ‘Troika’ card, you can easily pay for the subway, buses, trams, as well as surface train lines. You can even go to Moscow Region and see some interesting sights there. Read about how to use Moscow’s subway here .

3. Download an official taxi app

Prefer official taxi rather than hitchhiking

Prefer official taxi rather than hitchhiking

If you still need to grab a taxi (for example, at night, when public transportation is no longer running), it is better to download an app. We do not recommend hitchhiking or using the services of unofficial cab drivers who meet you at train stations or airports. They can take payment in triple the price, and the service can unpleasantly surprise.

You can use the ‘Yandex Go’ app (the same app with which you will have access to electric scooters), as well as ‘Uber Russia’ ( AppStore or Google Play ) or ‘City-Mobil’ . In most apps, you can choose the class of car and additional services: minivan, child seat and others.

4. Plan how to get from the airports to the city center in advance

Aeroexpress train is the most easy way to get from airports to the city center

Aeroexpress train is the most easy way to get from airports to the city center

If your flight is overnight, you will probably need a taxi (check the previous tip!). If you arrive at one of Moscow's airports between 6 am and 11 pm, you can also use the ‘Aeroexpress’ (You can see the schedule and buy tickets online here ), as well as regular trains or buses to the city center or to a station convenient for you. And, from Vnukovo Airport, you can even get to the city center via the subway.

5. Buy all tickets online in advance

Tourists in the Tretyakov Gallery

Tourists in the Tretyakov Gallery

To avoid standing in lines at the Tretyakov Gallery or other museums, where there is always a big rush at temporary exhibitions, it is better to plan your visit in advance. Tickets are sold by sessions every 30 or 60 minutes, so you can roughly calculate the time when to go. Besides, if you buy a ticket online, you'll be sure that the museum is open that day! Plan to visit museums for at least an hour or even two (And in the Moscow Kremlin, for example, you can literally spend the whole day exploring all its museums and churches!).

By the way, if you're aiming for a particular restaurant, it's also better to book it in advance by phone or online. There is no shortage of catering establishments in Moscow, but some popular places can be impossible to get into, due to the large influx of diners.

6. Book a hotel within the Garden Ring (or very close to the subway)

Gorgeous Metropol historical hotel

Gorgeous Metropol historical hotel

Moscow is very big, so if you aim to see as many sights as possible, it is better to be based in the city center. The notion of the “center” is still quite large, but, in general, you can get everywhere inside the Garden Ring (Sadovoye Koltso) quite quickly and conveniently. You can find hotels in different price categories, but, if you want to save money or you want to live near Vorobyevy Gory, VDNKh or other locations further from the center, it is better to choose hotels close to the subway (for example, there is a very large hotel complex at ‘Partizanskaya’ station, so it is close to the subway and to the large Izmailovsky forest and park).

Read more about how to book a hotel here  and some tips on which location to choose a hotel, depending on your goals, here .

7. Visit a tourist center

Tourist center

Tourist center

If you haven't prepared for your trip in advance and haven't planned everything by the hour, there is help available! There are several tourist information centers in Moscow whose staff speak English. These include those at Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo airports, as well as in Zaryadye Park in the center. They have useful information about all the capital's sights, parks and museums, and also offer travel routes and unusual ways to explore the city, such as taking a ride on a river boat.

8. Choose the best time to travel

Summer or New Year holidays, any time is great in Moscow

Summer or New Year holidays, any time is great in Moscow

Moscow is beautiful any time of year. But, it is especially nice in late May-early June. As well as all summer, if you are not afraid of the heat, but like to sit in the sun on a veranda with a cocktail! We also recommend the end of September, when the city gets its fall colors. And, of course, from the beginning of December to the end of January, when the whole of Moscow is covered in snow and decorated with New Year's illuminations (But, take note, the first week of January can be quite crowded as Russians are on their New Year's holidays).

9. Download ‘Yandex Maps’

Yandex Maps show traffic, public transport situation online and can make routes

Yandex Maps show traffic, public transport situation online and can make routes

Moscow was built spontaneously, so the center is not as orderly in blocks like in New York or St. Petersburg and can be rather confusing at times. It's not that hard to get lost. That's why we recommend downloading the ‘Yandex Maps’ app ( AppStore and Google Play ) in advance and maybe even pre-program the route you need, marking key destinations: museums, restaurants, public transportation stops, etc. Public toilets will also be marked and you can also track ground transportation on it and see how many minutes are left to the nearest tram.

10. Schedule a week for your trip

Even one day in Moscow is perfect, but a week would be much better for a comprehensive trip

Even one day in Moscow is perfect, but a week would be much better for a comprehensive trip

A week will not be enough to explore Moscow completely, but it is enough to leisurely explore the center, parks and main attractions away from the center. This way, you'll also have enough time for museums, walks and maybe even theater play or a concert. Or maybe you'll find the time for some shopping therapy!

And, if you only have up to 48 hours, here’s our express guide on what to do in Moscow !

Putin’s China visit highlights military ties that worry West

President Vladimir Putin of Russia attended a trade fair Friday in a northeastern Chinese city and toured a state-backed university famous for its cutting-edge defense research, highlighting how economic and military ties between the countries have grown despite, or perhaps because of, Western pressure.

Putin’s visit to Harbin, a Chinese city with a Russian past, is part of a trip aimed at demonstrating that he has powerful friends even as his war against Ukraine — a campaign that he is escalating — has isolated him from the West. The visit followed a day of talks between him and President Xi Jinping of China that seemed orchestrated to convey not only the strategic alignment of the two powerful, autocratic leaders against the West, but a personal connection.

State media showed Putin and Xi, neckties off after formal talks Thursday, strolling under willow trees and sipping tea at a traditional pavilion on the grounds of Zhongnanhai, the walled leadership compound in Beijing, with only their interpreters. As Xi saw Putin off in the evening, he even initiated a hug — a rare expression of affection for the Chinese leader.

“Xi’s very deliberate embrace of Putin for the cameras wasn’t just to emphasize the closeness of the political relationship between the two countries and their leaders,” said Richard McGregor, a senior fellow for East Asia at the Lowy Institute in Sydney. “There was also a touch of disdain directed at Washington, which has been pressuring Beijing to withdraw support from Moscow. That clearly isn’t going to happen in any substantive fashion.”

The show of camaraderie was the final touch in talks that culminated in a joint statement that took aim at the United States, which Putin and Xi have accused of seeking to suppress their countries. The statement pledged that Russia and China would work more closely in critical sectors like energy, space and the military.

The growing security ties between the two nuclear-armed powers is a focal point of Putin’s Harbin visit.

While China and Russia are not formal allies committed to defend each other with military support, their armed forces have worked together more closely in recent years. Their air forces and navies have held joint military exercises, including near Alaska and Taiwan, the de facto independent island claimed by Beijing. On Thursday, the two leaders issued words of support for their separate claims to Taiwan and Ukraine.

And while China has vowed not to provide Russia with lethal weapons, it has been the top supplier of components like semiconductors and machine tools that have civilian and military uses.

While that is helpful, Putin still seeks access to more sophisticated tools. The Harbin Institute of Technology is best known for its research of rockets, missiles and space technology — expertise that Russia would greatly benefit from, as the war in Ukraine has revived its need for a more robust military-industrial complex. The institute also trained North Korean scientists who worked on North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, according to The Wall Street Journal and South Korean media.

Putin’s tour of the school is steeped in symbolism. The 103-year-old institution recently opened a joint campus with St. Petersburg State University, Putin’s alma mater. And in something of a snub to Washington, the school is on the U.S.’ so-called entity list, banning it from accessing U.S. technology and taking part in educational exchanges because of its links to the People’s Liberation Army.

“We should be less concerned about what particular technologies China might be sharing with Russia from Harbin or elsewhere than the larger pattern and signal that this visit represents,” said Markus Garlauskas, a security expert at the Atlantic Council.

“China did not need to host Putin at Harbin in order to transfer technologies from there to Russia,” he added. “That this visit took place so openly is a visible and symbolic sign of Beijing being willing to provide directly military-applicable technology to support Russia’s war against Ukraine.”

Song Zhongping, a commentator in Beijing who is a former military officer, defended Putin’s visit to the institute, pointing to the school’s cooperation with Russia in education.

“Communication at the university level between China and Russia is consistent with the academic exchange and national interests of both countries,” Song said.

Garlauskas said the tour of the Harbin Institute of Technology had echoes of when Putin hosted Kim Jong Un, the North Korean dictator, at a Russian spaceport last year before North Korea began supplying Moscow with ballistic missiles and other munitions to use in Ukraine.

“What China shares with Russia, Russia could easily then turn around and share with North Korea,” Garlauskas said.

Not long ago, it was China that drew greater benefits from access to Russian military technology. Starting in the 1990s and peaking in the early 2000s, Beijing was a major buyer of Russian arms. Sales then began to slow after Moscow grew concerned about China reverse-engineering Russian weapons, said Elizabeth Wishnick, a senior research scientist at the Center for Naval Analyses in Virginia.

It wasn’t until about a decade ago that cooperation between the two sides returned, leading to China’s acquisition of more Russian jet engine technology and surface-to-air missile systems. Still, in a sign that there are limits to its cooperation with China, Russia is holding out sharing its silent submarine technology, a feature that makes the vessels especially hard to detect, Wishnick said.

Putin is also using his visit to Harbin, where he attended a trade fair, to promote the flow of goods between the countries.

China has given Russia an economic lifeline by buying huge amounts of Russian oil to circumvent the effects of its financial isolation from the Western world. Not only that — with many foreign consumer brands also leaving Russia, Chinese companies have stepped in to fill a vacuum for the likes of automobiles, smartphones and televisions. That contributed to a record $240 billion in two-way trade between the China and Russia in 2023, up from $190 billion in 2022, according to Chinese customs data.

Maintaining that growth in trade is a major focus in both countries, analysts said, now that Western pressure on Chinese banks to scale back transactions with Russian firms is believed to have led to the first year-on-year decline in trade in more than two years in March.

One solution would be to increase the amount of transactions settled in local currencies rather than dollars to avoid the risk of sanctions. Putin said Thursday that more than 90% of commercial transactions conducted between Russia and China were now being cleared in rubles or yuan.

“Protecting the financial assets of big banks in China is the top crucial interest of China,” said Shi Yinhong, an international relations professor at Renmin University in Beijing. He said China was trying to reduce its exposure to the dollar beyond just in Russia but that the room to do so was “limited.”

AU mourns passing of former president G. William Benz

ASHLAND, Ohio – G. William Benz, Ph.D., who served as president of Ashland University from 1993-2006, passed away in Albuquerque, N.M., on May 8. He was 88.

Benz’s impressive career in academia was headlined by leading AU during a time of significant growth. Among the highlights of his 13-year administration were:

  • The “Building on Strength” comprehensive fundraising campaign, which raised $59.4 million over a five-year period (the largest in AU’s history at the time)
  • Construction of 12 new buildings, including the Hawkins-Conard Student Center, the Dauch College of Business and Economics and the Rybolt Health Sciences and Recreation Center
  • Establishment of Doctor of Education and Master of American History and Government degrees
  • Increase in academic standards for undergraduate students (ACT scores, high school GPA, class rank, etc.)
  • Strengthening of faculty, in terms of both numbers and quality scholarship

Benz called his time as Ashland’s president as “probably the source of my greatest enjoyment” during a 2006 interview with Accent magazine. “It has given me the chance to work with some extraordinary people at an institution that I believe in very strongly and … feel privileged to have had the opportunity to share in its success,” he added.

Prior to coming to Ashland, Benz was at Ohio Wesleyan University from 1986-93, serving as special assistant to the president, provost and chief academic officer. He was also a dean at Defiance College and a professor at Trinity College, Lake Forest College and Whitworth College.

Benz, who grew up in Fort Scott, Kan., and Ontario, Calif., served in the U.S. Navy for four years and was involved in highly-sensitive intelligence work as a Russian language specialist.  He spent months at sea on a submarine, eavesdropping on Soviet military radio transmissions.

That experience inspired an interest in Soviet politics and Russian history, and upon leaving the military, Benz attended the University of California at Riverside. He later earned a Ph.D. in Soviet studies from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

Benz’s wife of seven decades, Gerry Benz, survives.

According to his son, Stephen Benz, “Bill and Gerry loved Ashland very much and they continued to follow AU news while in retirement. My father took particular delight in the successes of the women’s basketball team. The memorial service will prominently feature purple and gold.”

Ashland University is a mid-sized, private university conveniently located a short distance from Akron, Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. Ashland University ( www.ashland.edu ) values the individual student and offers a unique educational experience that combines the challenge of strong applied academic programs with a faculty and staff who build nurturing relationships with their students.

High school seniors are invited to learn about the University Honors Program at our premier Honors Student for a Day event.

Why Schedule a Campus Visit?

You’re making an important decision. You’ve browsed our website, reviewed brochures and done your research. Still, getting a feel for campus can help you make your final choice. Take in the culture and our Moscow location, experience life in the dorms and dining halls and see where you’ll be learning. Begin to see yourself at U of I with a campus visit.

Confirm your initial impression. If research grabs your attention, a campus visit goes beyond. Determine if you feel at home as a Vandal and if a particular program of study is right for you. Use your visit or campus tour to meet professors and other students, narrow down your list of majors and make a definite decision once you receive your acceptance letter in the spring.

Make the Most of Your Campus Visit

You’ve heard this advice before — don’t just look at buildings. Instead, keep the following in mind whether you’re attending an event, campus tour or a virtual session:

  • When to schedule your visit: Check out our Moscow campus as students attend class, engage in research and go about their day-to-day lives as Vandals. Ideally, attend a tour before submitting your application, preferably in the spring of your junior year or early fall of your senior year.
  • Be ready to ask questions: Make a list ahead of time to ask your tour guide, admissions counselor and students you see around campus.
  • Consider multiple campus visits: Start virtually to get a feel for our campus. Then, to get a more personal perspective, consider attending an on-campus visit. Here, opt for a student-guided campus tour, and schedule in visits with schools or departments for programs you’re curious about.
  • Take notes: What makes U of I unique? How does being a Vandal resonate with you? Document your visit with notes and photos to reference later.
  • Prepare ahead of time: Avoid attending a campus visit on a whim. Instead, schedule your visit in advance, make plans for a college or program visit, explore our virtual resources, review a map to understand the layout of our campus and make travel arrangements. Additionally, continue your research to ask questions during your visit.
