Travis Kelce meant what he said about potentially  getting tasered at the presidential podium .

The 34-year-old Kansas City Chiefs tight end addressed the nation when he visited the White House on Friday, appearing alongside President Joe Biden and his Super Bowl LVIII -winning teammates. After he was invited to speak into the microphone, Travis made his remarks brief.

"My fellow Americans," he began. "It's nice to see you all yet again. I'm not gonna lie, President Biden, they told me if I came up here I'd get tased. So, I'm gonna go back to my spot."

On Wednesday's episode of his New Heights podcast, presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment, Travis said he received a not-so-subtle warning from members of the secret service earlier that day.

"That's real," he told brother  Jason Kelce of his remarks. "The secret service that's all over the White House, they weren't too happy with me. They weren't too happy with me on my second time visiting."

Just last year, Travis spontaneously took the podium for a brief second, after he and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes delivered Biden a custom No. 46 jersey following their Super Bowl LVII win. Just then, Kelce sneakily sauntered over to the podium and said, "So, I've been waiting for this ..." before Mahomes intercepted his teammate and apologized for the stunt before guiding him back towards the rest of the group.

Beyond going rogue, Travis admitted that he had also arrived without proper identification that year.

"Last time, I was talking about how I had an expired ID," he said on Wednesday, referring to his 2023 visit. "I caught s**t for that."

This time, Travis said, he took extra precautions to keep things on the up and up.

"I made sure, because of what happened last time and how embarrassed I was for going to the White House with an expired ID, I made sure that I brought my passport with me this time," he said. "I was doing things the right way because everyone has to do that at the White House."

Still, officials kept a close watch on the athlete.

"When I walked in, we had about four or five secret service members come up to me and go, 'You know that if you go up to that podium we are authorized to tase you,'" Travis recalled, adding, "'It is actually ordered for us to tase you.'"

Travis noted that he had "no idea" President Biden would invite him to speak.

"He walked right up and the first thing he said was [to] give me the floor," Travis said. "I felt taser aimed at me when I was up there the whole time."

In the end, Travis recalled being gifted a special pin and challenge coin from the secret service while brother Jason noted that he was "so jealous" of the "unreal" experience.

"It's always an honor to go to the White House, man," Travis marveled.

"Any time that I get a chance to get recognized by the President of the United States and get to go with my teammates, and a group of men and women that I had success with to the point where we get to get acknowledged, man, I'm doing it every single time," he added. "No matter who's up there at the helm, no matter what's going on in this world, I think it's just such a cool opportunity."

Biden was also presented with a Chiefs helmet at Friday's White House reception, where he was cheered on to wear it. POTUS obliged, as he unbuckled the chinstrap before sliding the helmet on his head. It prompted cheers from the Chiefs, some of whom could be heard yelling, "Do it! Do it!"

It's worth noting that Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker -- who chuckled with the rest of his teammates after Biden threw on the helmet -- attended the festivities. His presence came just weeks after his  controversial commencement speech  at Benedictine College, where he railed against Pride month, working women and Biden's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which drew widespread condemnation from  the sisters  of Mount St. Scholastica,  the faith-based magazine  U.S. Catholic  and  the NFL .

Mahomes  distanced himself  from Butker's comments, and Kelce shared he  doesn't agree  with the majority of the views his teammate expressed, though both Mahomes and Kelce also expressed Butker is a good teammate.

Hunter Biden Trial Day 2: Lawyers offer dueling narratives of addiction and recovery in opening statements

WILMINGTON, Del. — In a cadence that at times evoked a fish gasping for air, a lead prosecutor for the special counsel, Derek Hines, worked Tuesday to hammer into place the government’s narrative that Hunter Biden was a high-functioning drug addict who lied to friends and family and ultimately broke the law when he checked a box on a government background check form that he was not a drug user during the purchase of a handgun in 2018.

Hines leaned heavily on Hunter’s own words to characterize his habits and addiction leading up to and after the purchase, later bringing in the prosecution’s first witness, an FBI agent, who explained how the government authenticated key pieces of evidence, including files extracted from a laptop Biden abandoned at a Wilmington computer repair shop.

Several jurors took notes as the prosecution played excerpts from Biden’s 2021 memoir, "Beautiful Things," including a retelling of his first attempt to buy crack cocaine from a homeless woman in Franklin Park in Washington, D.C.

Yet that telling came under repeated stress.

Tensions also rose early in the day outside of the proceedings as Hunter’s wife, Melissa Cohen-Biden, approached former Trump White House aide Garett Ziegler in the hallway outside the courtroom. Gesturing towards him, Cohen-Biden pointed her finger and said, “You have no right to be here, you Nazi piece of s---.”

Ziegler has disseminated data from a laptop belonging to Hunter Biden that documented, in vivid detail, scenes from the throes of his addiction — some of which have now materialized as evidence against him.

Here’s what you missed on Day 2 of the trial:

Dueling narratives

Arguing that the prosecution’s heavy-handed timeline was focused everywhere but the critical period — barely more than one week — during which Biden owned the gun, and whether he knowingly lied when he attested to not using drugs, his attorney, Abbe Lowell, replayed key events from Hines’ account offering a counter-narrative that delicately unpicked the government’s stitching and rewove it into a story of a man in recovery who was prodded into the rushed firearm purchase at the center of the historic case against him.

Lowell spoke to the jurors directly as he walked them through these moments: Bored as he awaited the processing of a new cellphone, Hunter Biden ambled into a store with “an interesting name” where a salesman and self-described “whale hunter” approached, and ultimately “led” the president's son to buy a Colt Cobra revolver, as well as ammo, a speed loader (to alleviate the “downside” of having to load every cartridge individually) and even a BB gun.

Lowell indicated that Biden was rushed to finalize the sale, which necessitated the completion of the background form, with more than a dozen checkboxes, at the center of the case.

The salesman’s associate “also wanted to get this sale done as quickly as he could,” Lowell said.

Days later, upon learning that his brother's widow had recovered the firearm from his truck, throwing it in a trash can “in front of Janssen’s grocery store,” Biden immediately sought to retrieve it.

Lowell argued that Biden’s decision to stow the truck at her home overnight instead of the Best Western where he was staying showed foresight as he prepared to drive to Washington the next day to see his daughter, Maisy Biden.

“This is not a place that you would consider leaving a good truck to be broken into and especially if you knew there was a gun locked in its steel case inside,” said Lowell. Later, Lowell said that Biden only opened its lock box once after buying the gun.

In the government’s telling, Biden was still an addict when the gun was purchased and thrown in a trash can, and Hines showed the jury how Biden texted Hallie Biden, the widow of his brother Beau, in disbelief: “The f---ing FBI … It’s hard to believe anyone is that stupid … who in their right mind would trust you would help me get sober?”

By Lowell’s account, when Hunter texted Hallie the day after he bought the gun that he was “off MD avenue ... waiting for a dealer named Mookie,” and a day later that he was “sleeping on a car smoking crack on 4th Street and Rodney,” it was because the relationship had frayed and not, Lowell implied, because Biden was necessarily doing those things.

Lowell also said that it was not unusual for Biden to withdraw large sums of cash. And he worked to distance Biden from prosecutors’ discovery of cocaine on the pouch in which the gun was found.

“It was Hallie,” with whom Hunter was in the midst of an “intense” relationship, “and not Hunter” who had placed the gun, bullets and loader into a bag from her home that, when prosecutors tested it years later, showed cocaine residue, Lowell said.

Tensions over evidence

Judge Maryellen Noreika dealt the defense blow after blow in quick succession, overruling Lowell's attempt to admit into evidence several exhibits that seemed to call the prosecution's account of events into question, including a video pulled from Biden’s phone

The first, a text message from Hallie to Biden, explained how she discovered the gun.

“It was opened, unlocked, and windows down, and the kids search your car,” Hines read into the court record.

Noreika also moved to admit a redacted version of a video that showed Biden “unclothed” that the defense argued should be withheld because it was dated after the alleged crime.

“No need for commentary,” the judge said. “All right, it’s admitted.”

Moments later, the judge admitted a December 2018 message into evidence in which Biden used a vulgar term to call Hallie "selfish" and "self-righteous" and said she "actually truly works against my getting sober,” before adding, “I’ll f------ get sober when I want to get f------ sober.”

Later, Lowell pressed the prosecution’s first witness, FBI agent Erika Jensen on whether Biden held the same furious back-and-forth exchanges with drug dealers that Hines had shown the jury from periods of Biden’s binges. The witness could not say.

The exchange played for the jury “was four or five months” before Biden purchased the gun, Jensen said.

“On the 13th, before you turn to a different date, that doesn’t say anything about drugs that day, does it?” Lowell said, referring to messages between Biden and Hallie the day after he bought the gun. “I’m looking at the 13th just as an example.”

Special counsel David Weiss observed the proceedings from the corner of the room, his eyes fixed on Lowell.

Image: hunter biden day 2

During cross-examination, the defense attorney also probed prosecutors’ reliance on Biden’s account in his memoir of a “relapse” to suggest he was taking drugs again. Jensen could not definitively say whether Biden was talking about a drug or alcohol relapse. She agreed that Biden had made many liquor store purchases during October 2018.

Yet Biden appeared upbeat, greeting one reporter in the courtroom with a fist bump and later joking to another that she was a “troublemaker.”

Biden and his wife hugged and kissed each time they passed each other during breaks in the proceedings.

Jurors sit through testimony surrounding addiction

Lowell reminded the jurors they had “promised to be fair and impartial, consider all the evidence carefully, and follow the law and the rules.”

You must hear every shred of evidence before you make up your minds, “not just start with the idea that if the prosecutors brought those charges, they might be right,” he said.

He said they would have to check "not guilty" on a verdict form today because of the presumption of innocence.

One juror wore a look of bemusement as Hines delivered the prosecution’s opening statements. That expression faded after more than an hour of replaying an excerpt from Biden's memoir read by him aloud and detailing his drug binges. Other jurors held their faces in their hands. One woman closed her eyes and another man looked up at the ceiling.

Elsewhere in the room, allies of the defense, closer to President Joe Biden’s age than his son’s, gazed straight ahead or looked toward the floor.

Biden’s abandoned laptop

Cohen-Biden began shaking her head as soon as Hines held up the laptop and, at times, exchanged whispers with Kevin Morris — an entertainment lawyer who is helping to pay Hunter Biden’s legal fees and who was seated next to her. She continued to shake her head as Jensen explained how the FBI extracted data from the laptop and what the data showed.

Biden displayed little emotion as images and text messages that were taken in the throes of his addiction appeared before him.

Can Trump run for president as a convicted felon?

Thirty-four charges, one often exasperated judge and a parade of witnesses.

After two days of deliberations, 12 New Yorkers found Donald Trump guilty of all charges in his hush-money case.

It is a history-making verdict following a history-making trial. Trump is now the first former US president with a criminal conviction, and the first major party candidate to run for the White House as a felon.

So what happens next?

Here are some key issues to consider.

  • LIVE UPDATES: Reaction and analysis

Can he still run for president?

Yes. The US Constitution sets out relatively few eligibility requirements for presidential candidates: they must be at least 35, be a “natural born” US citizen and have lived in the US for at least 14 years. There are no rules blocking candidates with criminal records.

But this guilty verdict still could sway November’s presidential election. A poll from Bloomberg and Morning Consult earlier this year found that 53% of voters in key swing states would refuse to vote for the Republican if he were convicted.

Another poll, from Quinnipiac University this month , showed 6% of Trump voters would be less likely to vote for him - consequential in such a tight race.

What happens to Trump now?

Trump has been free on bail throughout the trial and this did not change after the verdict was read on Thursday - the Republican was released on his own recognisance.

He will return to court on 11 July - the date Justice Juan Merchan has scheduled for a sentencing hearing.

But Trump said Friday his team will ask Justice Merchan for a different day, as the selected date is four days before the start of the Republican National Convention.

Regardless of the date, the judge will have several factors to consider in sentencing, including Trump’s age.

The sentence could involve a fine, probation or supervision, or possibly prison time.

Trump, who called the ruling a "disgrace", said he will appeal the guilty verdict, a process that could take months or even longer.

Attorney Todd Blanche told CNN Thursday night that the former president's legal team would "vigorously fight" the verdict with motions in the coming weeks. If those motions prove unsuccessful, they will appeal following his sentencing, Mr Blanche said.

His legal team would face the Appellate Division in Manhattan, and possibly the Court of Appeals.

This all means that even after sentencing it would be highly unlikely that Trump will leave the court in handcuffs, as he would be expected to remain free on bail while he appeals.

What would be the grounds for appeal?

The evidence of adult film star Stormy Daniels, whose alleged sexual encounter with Trump was at the heart of the case, could be one reason.

“The level of detail that was provided [by Ms Daniels] is really not necessary to the telling of the story," said Anna Cominsky, a professor at New York Law School.

"On the one hand, her detail makes her credible and as a prosecutor, you want to provide enough detail so the jury believes what she has to say. On the other hand, there's a line, where it could become irrelevant and prejudicial."

Trump’s defence team twice called for a mistrial during Ms Daniels’ testimony, motions that were denied by the judge.

  • 'The air in the courtroom turned to stone'

Beyond that, the novel legal strategy taken by the District Attorney in this case may also provide grounds for appeal.

Falsifying business records can be a lower-level misdemeanour in New York, but Trump faced more serious felony charges because of a supposed second crime, an alleged illegal attempt to influence the 2016 election.

Prosecutors broadly alleged that violations of federal and state election laws, along with tax fraud, applied to this case. But they did not specify to the jury exactly which one was broken.

Legal experts say there are questions around the scope and application of the federal law that could form a basis for appeal. Never before has a state prosecutor invoked an uncharged federal crime, and there’s a question if the Manhattan District Attorney had the jurisdiction to do so.

Can Trump go to prison?

It is possible, though highly unlikely, that Trump will serve time behind bars.

The 34 charges he faced are all class E felonies in New York, the lowest tier in the state. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of four years.

As noted above, there are several reasons why Justice Merchan could choose a lesser punishment, including Trump’s age, his lack of previous convictions, and the fact that the charges involve a non-violent crime.

He could consider Trump's violations of the court’s gag orders during the trial.

It is also possible that the judge would weigh the unprecedented nature of the case, perhaps choosing to avoid putting a former president and current candidate behind bars.

There is also a question of practicality. Trump, like all former presidents, is entitled to lifelong protection from the Secret Service. This means that some agents would need to protect him in prison.

Even so, it would be extremely difficult to run a prison system with a former president as an inmate. It would be a huge security risk and expensive to keep him safe.

“Prison systems care about two things: security of the institution and keeping costs down,” said Justin Paperny, director of the prison consulting firm White Collar Advice.

With Trump, “it would be a freak show… no warden would allow it”, he said.

Can he vote?

It's likely that Trump will be able to vote this autumn.

Under Florida law - where Trump is a resident - a person with a felony conviction from another state is ineligible to vote only "if the conviction would make the person ineligible to vote in the state where the person was convicted".

Trump was convicted in New York, where felons are allowed to vote as long as they are not currently incarcerated.

This means that unless Trump is behind bars on 5 November, he should be eligible to cast his ballot.

Could he pardon himself?

No. Presidents can issue pardons for those who have committed federal offences. The hush-money case in New York is a state matter, meaning it would be out of Trump’s reach if he were to become president again.

The same is true for Trump’s case in Georgia, where he has been accused of criminally conspiring to overturn his narrow defeat by President Joe Biden in the state during the 2020 election. This case is currently tied up in appeals .

Pardon powers are unclear for Trump’s two federal cases - one concerning the alleged mishandling of classified documents, and the other on conspiring to overturn the 2020 election.

In the first, a Trump-appointed judge in Florida has indefinitely postponed the trial, saying setting a date before resolving questions about evidence would be “imprudent”. The second outstanding federal case also was delayed while an appeal from Trump plays out.

Neither are likely to take place before the November election, but even if they did, constitutional scholars disagree on whether a president’s pardon power includes himself. Trump could be the first to try.
