The PGA Tour Champions (commonly known as the Champions Tour) is a senior golf tour specifically made for golfers above the age of 50. The Professional Golfers Association officially founded the tour over 40 years ago in 1980.

The beauty of golf is that it ages like fine wine. You’re never too old to play golf! Even if you want to play in a USGA Senior Amateur Championship .

This article goes in-depth about the senior golf tour five major tournaments. It highlights renowned championships, golfer stats, and a few fun facts.  However, for a more detailed review of the PGA TOUR Champions, you’ll want to read our ultimate guide .

Origin & History of the Senior Golf Tour

PGA Tour Champions, senior tour at the En-Joie Golf Club

The Senior PGA Championship has been unofficially active since 1937 as a high-profile tournament. It was exclusive for golfers above the age of 50.

However, in 1978, a profitable tournament between teams of the best senior golfers called the ‘Legends of Golf’ gave birth to the idea of an official senior golf tour.

The PGA formally established the ‘Senior PGA Tour’ in 1980. This senior tour was designed for golfers aged 50 and above to showcase their talent.

The 1980 tour consisted of only four events. For comparison, the 2021 tour consisted of 25 events. A lot has changed over the years!

The total prize money in 1980 was $475,000, which would be worth $1,707,901 today.

The next ten years, from 1980-1990, saw a considerable increase in the popularity of the senior tournament. The 1990 season consisted of thirty-eight official events with four major tournaments.

The entire prize money for the 1990 season was a whopping $17.8 million. In 2022, this prize money would be worth around $40,349,753.63 !

Fun Fact: Lee Trevino won 7 tournaments in the 1990 senior golf tour season. The most during the season.

Evolution of the PGA Tour Champions Name

In 2002, the tour was renamed the ‘Champions Tour’ till the 2015 season. The name PGA Tour Champions was adopted for the 2016 tour and onwards.

Qualifying & Playing on the Senior Golf Tour

Competitors in the senior golf tour have to play multiple tournaments throughout the season. These events are usually played over three rounds or 54 holes.

However, the five major championships of the tour are played over four rounds (72 holes) and have a 36-hole cut. Playing an additional round ensures bringing the best talent to the top of the standings.

Fun Fact: The average male golfer is estimated to hit a 219-yard drive. While the Senior Golf Tour’s average driving distance in 2022 was 282.0 yards . The longest drive of the tour was 308.8 yards by Padraig Harrington.

Senior Tour Age

With age comes wisdom. And the opportunity to qualify for the senior golf tour!

Here are a few requirements to qualify for the PGA Tour Champions:

  • The Senior Tour age requirement is 50 years old minimum.
  • Compete and qualify in the 72-hole Regional Qualifying Stage.
  • All successful qualifiers and exempt players must come in the top 12 of the Final Qualifying Stage between 78 golfers.

Spots in the Senior Golf Tour

Understanding the qualification system of the PGA Tour Champions is complicated, and hardly anyone understands it, according to Bobby Clampett , a professional Golf player, and analyst.

PGA Champions from previous years make up 30 of the 81 players on the field. Another 30 spots are given to players in the top 70 of the PGA Tour and Tour Champions.

The rest of the players include the World Golf Hall of Fame members and winners of previous PGA tours.

Players competing in the qualifying sessions also have a few spots reserved for them.

The 5 Senior Major Golf Championships & Their Winners

PGA Senior Tour with Senior Golfers making their final putts on the En-Joie Golf Course in NY

The Senior Major championships are a big deal in the tour. The best of the best golfers participate in Majors. Meaning that only players that meet certain criteria are given a spot in the Major tournament.

Major champions have their names go down in history books. This is one of the reasons why golfers praise Major events.

There are five major championships in the PGA Tour Champions. These championships differ from the other tours as they are played over four rounds (as opposed to 3 in the standard events).

Here are the five majors of the PGA Tour Champions, along with their relevant winners.

Players take on a revamped colonial country club this week on the pga tour.

charles-schwab-challenge-flag-g.jpg

An annual stop on the PGA Tour calendar has received a makeover since players last saw it. Colonial Country Club once again played host to the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge and Scottie Scheffler trails Davis Riley heading into Sunday's final round of this year's event which featured the debut of its newly renovated layout for players to tackle.

Scheffler, the world No. 1 returns to Colonial following a tumultuous week in Louisville that ultimately resulted in another top-10 finish. While Scheffler was unable to continue his quest for the calendar grand slam, he did continue his stretch of top-10 finishes, which now stands at nine straight.

During this run, the Texan has collected four trophies and will look to make it five at a golf course that has treated him kindly in the past with a third-place finish a year ago and a playoff loss to Sam Burns in 2022. Another player who has fond memories of Colonial is Scheffler's fellow Texas Longhorn, Jordan Spieth.

A winner at this golf course nearly a decade ago, Spieth has made it a habit at contending at this place with eight top-10 finishes to his name. While his form is in question, Spieth's love for the property is not. Both Scheffler and Spieth are joined in the field by a number of their U.S. Ryder Cup teammates, including Collin Morikawa, Max Homa and Brian Harman.

Tony Finau, Min Woo Lee, Tom Kim, Si Woo Kim and Min Woo Lee round out a strong crop of players teeing it up in this full-field event. With the summer months fast approaching, the Charles Schwab Challenge presents a great opportunity for players to launch into the meat of the PGA Tour season with a hot start in Texas.

What is Phil Mickelson's senior tour future? It's complicated

BRANSON, MO - AUGUST 24: Phil Mickelson of the United States hits from the 18th fairway during round one of the Charles Schwab Series at Ozarks National on August 24, 2020 in Branson, Missouri. (Photo by Brett Carlsen/Getty Images)

The most revealing and pivotal moment for Phil Mickelson on the way to shooting the lowest debut round in PGA Tour Champions history on Monday unfolded on the 13th green at Ozarks National Golf Course. The 18-footer he converted ignited a streak of five straight birdies to propel him to a 10-under 61 and the lead, so there was that. But then there was the fist pump that followed. He set his jaw. He dropped his left hand emphatically. It mattered. Him being there. Competing. Vying for a slice of a $3 million purse when he’s used to bellying up to buffets of $9 million or more.

Why it mattered is left to conjecture.

Did he want to impress in his senior debut? Sure. Did he want to make up for the earliest departure of his career in the FedEx Cup Playoffs the week prior? Presumably. Did he have something to prove to himself? Maybe. That he could still shoot some low scores? Yes, yes, and yes. Did he have a burning desire to become the 20th man in PGA Tour Champions history to win in his first start, or does he have bigger things in mind?

Seriously, what do you think?

Phil Mickelson invaded the senior tour this week and left little doubt about the damage he could do if he were to become a regular among the 50-and-older set. A rather perfunctory five-under 66 on Wednesday was enough to secure not only a four-stroke conquest in the Charles Schwab Series at Ozarks National , but also some accompanying psychological reinforcement that he had hoped would be a residue of the experience.

“Who was going to be good enough this week with that rat here?” Rocco Mediate asked after Mickelson finished at 22-under 191, tying the tour’s 54-hole scoring record . “The proof’s in the punishing.”

And that’s what Mickelson was hoping to find, more or less.

After missing the cut Friday at The Northern Trust, the PGA Tour’s opening playoff event, Mickelson, who turned 50 in June , promptly opted for a detour to Ridgedale, Mo., with the expressed purpose of working on some shots in a competitive atmosphere and “building a little momentum.” Reuniting with old friends was fine and all, and Mickelson spoke repeatedly of enjoying the experience, which included the enjoyable addition of $450,000 to his bank account. But the U.S. Open at Winged Foot is three weeks away and the Masters is in November, and the old left-hander wasn’t warming up in the bullpen this week just to go out and win the Charles Schwab Cup.

“I had a lot of fun here, I really did,” Mickelson said. “I’m hopeful to play in some more, too, but I also want to use this as a way to get sharp for the regular tour and for the majors.”

Momentum found.

And now? He’ll tee it up in two weeks in the PGA Tour season opener, the Safeway Open in Napa, Calif., before heading for New York. “I’ll be working on my game the next week and a half, see if I can be really sharp for the U.S. Open,” he said, revealing more of where his head and heart really are. “Obviously, I have a lot of work to do [for] some redemption at Winged Foot, but it’s a great golf course and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Does Phil move a needle? The unequivocal needle-moving champ, Tiger Woods, was asked about the enigmatic left-hander Wednesday morning at the BMW Championship, near Chicago, the event for which Mickelson failed to qualify, thus inducing his decision for less greener but more pluckable pastures these last three days. The BMW is a FedEx Cup Playoff event with a $9.5 million purse, and senior golf is among the menu topics? Only because of Phil.

“Playing unbelievable golf,” said Woods, apparently taking some passing interest in his rival’s pursuits . “He said he’s been close to playing well. I think that he was already one of the longer hitters out here, and now he goes to where he’s going to pick up a huge advantage off the tee, but you have to take advantage of that opportunity off the tee. His wedge game is off the charts, as we all know. … There’s no reason why he can’t win every event he plays out there.”

Not surprisingly, there were a lot of interested parties. Other than TV ratings, Twitter is perhaps the best barometer for gauging interest in a golf tournament, and Mickelson postings multiplied across the social-media platform starting with his Monday salvo. One veteran golf journalist wrote, “Damn you, Phil,” for making him care about senior scores. Well, he wasn’t alone.

Oh, and about those TV ratings. Golf Channel saw ratings increases of 150 percent on Monday and nearly 300 percent on Tuesday for its coverage of the PGA Tour Champions compared to programming in the same time period (6-8 p.m. EDT) the prior four weeks. Tuesday’s coverage was the most-watched Tuesday telecast since Golf Central Live during the 2019 Masters. (Wednesday’s figures weren’t yet available.)

Mickelson shot the tour's lowest score in his senior debut round (61) and matched the tour's 54-hole scoring record.

No wonder his peers have been eager to see him join the ranks. They recognize that Ernie Els and Jim Furyk and Mike Weir and Rich Beem, major champions all, are terrific additions to the elder statesmen herd this year, but no one ever conjured up an ad campaign entitled, “What will Ernie do next?”

“I’m glad it was sooner rather than later,” said two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen about Mickelson’s appearance. “Obviously his career … stellar. He brings a lot of attention to our tour. He’s also a great presence for pro-ams, in the locker room, talking trash. He’s fun to have around.”

“I think all of us out here would wish he would play out here a lot, because he brings such a presence, but I don’t think any of us would expect him to,” Steve Flesch said. “He gives our tour great exposure, as do a lot of other new guys like a Jim Furyk, Ernie, Retief. But Phil is just another notch higher as far as popularity. That’s just who fans like. And, you saw he just dismantled the golf course here. The rest of us mere mortals have to play it one way. He’s playing on another universe out there.

“He just kind of came in and blew through us. I wish we’d have had a few big names pushing him,” Flesch added. “My worry is he might not find it challenging enough. Not to demean anyone on our tour, but the guy is [ranked] 50-something in the world. We all kind of know where he should be playing.”

It didn’t even look like a fair fight. The coffee-swilling five-time major winner has no gray hair, stands without slouching, has remained fit and retained his flexibility, and he doesn’t appear particularly interested in giving his driver a respite of appreciable duration. He attacked Ozark National, which, fortuitously, happens to be generous off the tee, with a tournament-leading driving average of 323.7 yards. And he provided one of several highlight-reel shots by using the same club in the second round to escape from under a tree, with the ball perched on pine straw and bark .

Per usual, Phil can thrill.

Not that this necessarily always thrills Phil. Earlier this year he sounded like a man who fancied a little more scoring efficiency.

“I believe I can play at an extremely high level,” he said. “I just need to show it. I need to show what I believe.”

The chance to renew friendships with former competitors might give playing the PGA Tour Champions more appeal for Mickelson.

There have been plenty of accomplished players to join the senior tour in the years since Jack Nicklaus dipped his toe in sporadically in 1990, started collecting senior majors with relative ease and then remained somewhat fixated on winning the only four majors that matter. Since then, it can be argued, no 50-year-old has been more focused on, better prepared for, and seemingly capable of winning a major championship than Mickelson.

At 54th in the World Rankings, he could still be a threat at any major even if he is not a threat in every major.

Only last month Mickelson finished T-2 at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude, where he became the first player age 50 or older to finish in the top five in a WGC event. Last year, he won a record-tying fifth title at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am for his 44th PGA Tour victory, and the year before he broke a winless streak of almost five years by defeating reigning FedEx Cup champion Justin Thomas in a playoff at the WGC-Mexico Championship.

A month before that Pebble triumph, Mickelson opened the American Express with a 60. He can still bring some heat. And he can still flame out, as witnessed from time to time, which only adds to his aura and intensifies the fascination with which fans, both casual and golf-rabid, hold him. Is there another player in the world who advances a golf ball with more abandon and has more fun doing it?

There was once, but Arnold Palmer has left the building.

RELATED: Phil Mickelson’s most memorable equipment moments

Mickelson is the first player since Tom Watson to stick a peg in the forward tees whom we might think of as an authentic “legendary-type” figure. The two guys who maybe came closest in between were Fred Couples and John Daly, for different—and very separate—reasons. And Mickelson, frankly, might be the last, unless Woods decides, five-plus years from now, that he wants to spread a last layer of whoop-ass on his peers.

1228214250

While still competitive on the PGA Tour, Mickelson has said his starts with the seniors will be sparing.

How much will Mickelson hang around his fellow seniors? That is the real question, and the answer would seem to be not much. At least for the foreseeable future.

In February, before he nearly defended his title at Pebble Beach, Mickelson said he didn’t want to, “hurt the Champions Tour in any way, and if not playing the Champions Tour is going to hurt it, I’ll play a couple of events. I’ll probably play one, two or three events a year because I want to support it; I want it to be successful.”

RELATED: Two things Phil Mickelson surprisingly hasn’t accomplished

Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, Mickelson was quite enamored with the direction his game was headed, and he was highly motivated about the possibilities ahead. He put down this marker: “This motivates me to compete against the best players in the world. That drives me to get in the gym, it drives me to work hard on the range, it drives me to spend time on the putting green. And I’m not sure I would have the same passion and drive to be my best on the Champions Tour, but I have it out here, and so right now it’s starting to bring out the best in me and I want to play out here.”

The previous three days in Missouri already had been set to give the PGA Tour Champions a spotlight to enjoy, given that there were no other competitive golf events up against it. Then Phil Mickelson swooped in and changed the entire complexion of the thing. It is for that reason that the rest of the senior contingent wishes for his increased attendance, even if it means he is going to throttle them with bombs.

A World Golf Hall-of-Famer, Mickelson could add his name to a long line of fine players who ardently attempted to compete on both tours. But, seriously, what’s the point?

Mediate summed it up best. “Hopefully he’ll play some more, but he’s still fine on the regular tour. He still has big game, as you can see.”

Still has big aspirations, too.

He tripled a senior tour salary on LIV. Now he’s contending for a senior major

Richard Bland is leading at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship.

A few years ago, Richard Bland’s career was left for dead.

He was 46 years old and on the brink, a zero-time professional winner who’d just been relegated from the DP World Tour to the Challenger Tour. At his age, Bland’s odds of getting another shot in the big leagues were next to zero. His odds of making it back to the big leagues and making something of it? Well, they were stretching the limits of the decimal point.

On Friday morning, Richard Bland awoke in a very different place. He was holding the lead at the Senior PGA Championship, topping a leaderboard of former stars like Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk after an opening-round, 7-under 64. And wildest of all? He was doing it with the knowledge that in a field full of big-time senior tour earners, he had tripled nearly all of their 2024 salaries.

For Blandy, the story begins in his 478th professional start at the 2021 Betfred British Masters, when the unthinkable happened: He won . At 48 years old he was the oldest first-time winner ever on the European Tour. The victory guaranteed him invites into the U.S. Open and PGA Championships, and a strong stretch of golf followed over the next year, which included starts on the PGA Tour and a full DP World Tour calendar.

Then, in June 2022, chaos arrived to professional golf. LIV Golf burst onto the scene with billions in funding and a mandate to hire a class of professional golfers. Bland, a pro golf lifer with little in the bank to show for it, was the ideal early target. LIV’s $20 million events offered more money than he’d ever dreamed of, and the no-cut structure protected him from the bottom falling out. The choice was easy, and before long, he was a founding member of the Cleeks .

Two years and a number of LIV starts later, an email arrived from the PGA of America’s Bob Jeffrey last May. Jeffrey wanted to know: Did Bland, then 50 and newly eligible for senior tour events, have any interest in competing in the Senior PGA Championship?

“Yeah, I got invited last year. Completely out of the blue. I wasn’t expecting it,” Bland said. “Unfortunately I couldn’t play it. Clashed with a LIV event.”

As it turned out, Bland was eligible for the tournament based on a one-time exemption given to past DP World Tour winners. The exemption was due to lapse in 2025, but when Bland saw his tournament schedule was free for the week of the tournament this year, he reached back out to the PGA of America.

“I said, ‘look, I appreciated the gesture for the invite. If it could be run to this year I would love to come play,'” Bland said. “And Bob came straight back and said, ‘we would love to have you,’ so here I am.”

That’s how Bland arrived at Harbor Shores Golf Club in southern Michigan for this week’s Senior PGA, and after a brilliant start to the week, it’s also how he finds himself near the top of the leaderboard.

“I know Seth Waugh very well. He was my Dunhill partner few moons ago now. So I saw Seth last night. You know, I thanked him for it,” Bland said. “Yeah, I’m very grateful for the invite and hopefully I can do something with it.”

We don’t know for sure how Blandy’s fellow senior tour competitors feel about the whole ordeal. The 51-year-old Cleek entered Friday morning with $1.9 million in earnings for the season, triple all but five players on the Champions Tour in 2024.

Regardless, Bland will enter the weekend the highest-paid player in a field of those competing for a piece of the Senior PGA’s $3.5 million winner’s purse. And with a good shot of holding the 36-hole lead come Friday evening, he might just be the favorite of the field.

Not bad for a guy on the brink.

Els and Chalmers lead Bland and DiMarco by a stroke heading into final round of Senior PGA

Round 3 leaderboard: Senior PGA championship at Harbor Shores Golf Club in Benton Harbor

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — South Africa’s Ernie Els is still hunting for his first senior major golf championship after winning two U.S. Opens and two Open Championships during a World Hall of Fame golf career.

Australia’s Greg Chalmers and England’s Richard Bland are just trying to find success as senior golfers, period.

Sunday morning at 9:38, the three golfers will make up the final pairing of the final 84 th  KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship to be played at Jack Nicklaus’ par-71, 6,706-yard Golf Club of Harbor Shores, all of them seeking a career-defining senior victory.

Day 2: Bland leads Dunlap by one at Senior PGA with Els and Stricker both lurking

Day 1: On day to go low, Green and Bland shoot 7-under 64s to lead Senior PGA at Harbor Shores

But if Mother Nature cooperates, they are certain to have plenty of competition for the year’s second senior major victory.

On a sunny, cool and blustery Saturday just off the shores of Lake Michigan, the 51-year-old Bland, the LIV Tour member playing on a special exemption from the PGA of America who had shared or owned the lead after the first two rounds, gave it up to the 50-year-old Chalmers, a left-hander, and the popular 54-year-old Els, a 6-foot-3 golfer known around the world as “The Big Easy.”

Bland fell out of the lead after he struggled to a three-over 74 for a three-round total of nine-under 204, one stroke behind Chalmers, who zoomed up 12 spots on the leaderboard with his five-under 66, and Els, who shot a two-under 69 to earn his share of the lead at 10-under 203.

“I’ve been looking forward to this opportunity,” said Chalmers, who turned 50 last October but doesn’t have full status on the PGA Champions Tour though he has played in four events and earned $169,888 thanks to a pair of Top 10 finishes. “I need this challenge. I’m looking forward to seeing how I do tomorrow and how I play … see if I can embrace it with both hands and play some good golf.”

Saturday, the 6-foot Chalmers, who hails from Sydney, Australia, but lives in Colleyville, Texas, showed plenty of moxie at Harbor Shores with seven birdies — five in a row beginning at hole No. 6 — and just two bogeys.

“Probably the highlight … was the seventh hole,” Chalmers said of his birdie 3 on the hole that overlooks Lake Michigan. “I hit a 5-iron from about 180 yards into the wind to about four feet. So that gives me a lot of confidence when I start to see that kind of ball control.”

Chalmers and the 84 others who made the cut at three-over may need that kind of confidence Sunday. Because of a stormy afternoon forecast, tee times were moved up to 7:15 in the morning off both the first and 10 th  tees with hopes of finishing play before 2 p.m. when the bad stuff was scheduled to arrive.

“I thought conditions were tougher today than yesterday (when play was halted by a Friday afternoon storm),” Els said Saturday after finishing his two-under-par round of 69 with a birdie at the 417-yard 18 th  hole where he hit a pitching-wedge approach from 136 yards to six feet. It was one of six birdies on the day for Els, who survived four bogeys.

“Yeah, I’m fortunate enough to be up there,” Els continued. “You’ve got to just grind. It’s that type of week. It’s a difficult course — it can be if you get out of position. You got to take your medicine. You’ve got to play conservatively here and there. I’m a shot-maker, so I feel it (the course) suits me. I can hit fades and draws into the greens. Then you’ve just got to make the putts.”

Bland, who for the three days has hit the ball mostly well from tee to green, made just two birdies but had five bogeys in his three-over 74.

“I just didn’t have it today,” Bland said. “I’ve been around enough to know that you’re going to have some poor days. Hopefully try and play better tomorrow.”

Bland finds himself tied at nine-under with 55-year-old Chris DiMarco, who has good vibes about playing in southwestern Michigan. Back in 1988 as a University of Florida golfer, DiMarco won the Western Amateur at nearby Point O’Woods.

Saturday, DiMarco, with wife Amy toting the bag, shot an even-par 71 that included two birdies and two bogeys. One of the latter came at the 552-yard, par-5 10 th  where DiMarco drove into the dense left rough, eventually reached the green with his fifth shot and then made a seven-footer to save bogey 6.

“I kind of stole a shot there, to tell you the truth,” DiMarco said. “Amy is the best caddie I’ve had because she’s so positive.” Her advice on 10? “Let’s get it in the fairway; stop hitting in the rough,” DiMarco cracked.

DiMarco will be paired with Australian left-hander Green, who shot a one-under 70 and was eight-under 205, a stroke ahead of PGA club professional Jason Caron from Mill River Club on Long Island, N.Y. Caron shot a four-under 67 Saturday in a round that included five birdies and an eagle 2 at the 422-yard seventh, holing out a 5-hybrid from 173 yards. That came a day after Caron double-bogeyed the hole.

Joining Caron at seven-under 206 were three other golfers — Australia’s Scott Hend (70); 51-year-old Stewart Cink (71) of Atlanta, winner of the 2009 Open Championship; and defending Senior PGA champion Steve Stricker of Madison, Wis., who is seeking an eighth senior major title.

Stricker, who shot 71, and his caddy/daughter Bobbi went right to the driving range to work out his struggles from a round which included an eagle, three birdies and five bogeys, including a bogey at the 426-yard 16 th  which he has played in four-over for three days.

The best round of the day belonged to 66-year-old Bernhard Langer of Germany, who is using a golf cart after undergoing surgery for a torn Achilles tendon suffered playing pickleball 3½ months ago. Langer didn’t know until Saturday morning that he made the three-over cut until fellow players Fred Funk and Marco Dawson got word for him. Langer came out to shoot the day’s best round of six-under 65, moving up from T70 to T20 and was at three-under 210.

Liv golfer in contention for senior major at 2024 kitchenaid senior pga championship, share this article.

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — What could be the final KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship started Thursday with a Shootout at the Jack Nicklaus Corral — Harbor Shores.

When a wonderful day for scoring — clear, cool skies with little wind — was done and the sun was setting over Lake Michigan, 50 of the 155 players in the field for the year’s second major for the 50-and-over crowd shot under par 71 at the 6,970-yard Nicklaus design. Two unexpected golfers — Australian left-hander Richard Green and England’s Richard Bland — shared the overnight lead at 7-under 64.

“I think we had as good a day as we’re going to have this week,” said the 53-year-old Green, who is 26th on the PGA Champions Tour with $305,353, after his morning round which included an eagle on the 582-yard, par-5 fifth hole, six birdies (three in a row starting at No. 9) and just one hiccup, a bogey at the 410-yard sixth. “As good a day as you’re going to get really this close to Lake Michigan.”

The 6-foot-4 Green, a former “Sweet 16” qualifier in the 1992 Western Amateur down the road at Point O’Woods, will get no argument from the 51-year-old Bland, a member of LIV Golf who was playing in his inaugural PGA Champions Tour event.

“It’s nice to start the senior career with 7 under,” Bland said after his round which started with a five-under 30 on the back nine with birdies at 11, 12 and 18 and an eagle at the 538-yard 15th hole before he birdied Nos. 5 and 6 on the front before scrambling for pars at Nos. 8 and 9.

“There’s still a long way to go,” Bland quickly added. “We’re all here, we’ve been around the block enough. All it is is a good start.”

Green and Bland were two strokes ahead of five golfers, including defending KitchenAid Senior PGA champion Steve Stricker, who at one point was tied for the morning lead at seven-under but double-bogeyed the par-4, 425-yard 16th hole.

Stricker settled for a morning round of five-under 66 matched by Canadian lefthander Mike Weir and South Korea’s K.J. Choi. In the afternoon, they were joined by Iowa club professional Jeff Schmid and Scott Dunlap, who bogeyed the 570-yard, par-5 ninth or he would have had third by himself.

There were another five golfers who shot four-under 67s – Fiji’s Vijay Singh and Japan’s Katsumasa Miyamoto, Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke and Americans Brian Gay and Stewart Cink.

The 55-year-old Clarke, who won the 2011 Open Championship and often shows his Irish emotions, knew the Nicklaus design was there for the taking Thursday and made sure he did in a round which included five birdies and just one hiccup, a bogey at the 416-yard 12th.

“The golf course is great — tests all aspects of your game,” said Clarke, who called himself “a mental midget” and shared a laugh. “But I was pretty calm today. It’s one of those courses that patience is required. If I’m not wrong, I hit every club in my bag. Not all golf courses ask you to do that. This one does.”

The 51-year-old Cink, still seeking his first victory as a senior, was paired in a featured morning threesome with Stricker and England’s Paul Broadhurst, the 2018 champion here with a record 19-under 265 score. After starting with a bogey at the first hole, Cink eagled the 582-yard fifth, birdied the sixth and then eagled the 570-yard ninth on his way to a 67.

“I hit some beautiful second shots on the par 5s and was able to get inside 10 feet for two eagle putts and made them both,” said Cink, who finished tied for third with Stricker in their last senior major, the Regions Tradition, two Sundays ago.

Stricker, who hasn’t won in his last seven starts on the senior circuit, had seven birdies in his first official 15 holes at Harbor Shores with daughter Bobbi carrying his clubs. But a poor tee shot at the par-4, 425-yard 16th cost him dearly.

“You know you have to commit to a lot of things out here, and a lot of shots that may make you feel a little uncomfortable,” Stricker said. “(I) put a bad swing on it at 16, hit it into the penalty area. And (that) then should have been a bogey at worst but messed up the second shot there, too. All in all, a good day — seven birdies, putted well, gave myself some opportunities, and it was a good start.”

Among those who will need to play better Friday to make the low 70 and ties who make it to the weekend play (there are 84 golfers at one-over or better) are Germany’s Bernhard Langer and Ireland’s Padraig Harrington.

The 66-year-old Langer, who is just 3½ months removed from Achilles tendon surgery and had the use of a cart, opened with a three-over 74 and was tied for 98th with Harrington, who is playing with a stiff neck. They were one shot ahead of Broadhurst, who shot 75 on his arthritic ankle which also required a cart.
