Radio Travel News

Welcome to Radio Travel News

National, regional or custom travel news for your radio station, sent automatically to your playout system..

Radio Travel News is perfect for automated radio stations broadcasting online, or using a number of DAB multiplexes.

Real-time travel information is viewed as a valuable service by listeners, helping them plan their journeys in advance, or informing them of potential problems on the road ahead. And even if your listeners aren’t travelling, it’s good to give them a sense of what’s happening in real time around the country – a bonus if you run an automated service.

We provide 45-second UK audio travel bulletins every hour on weekdays, plus an extra half-hourly bulletin at breakfast and drive, and send it to Dropbox before the top/bottom of the hour.

Radio stations can play it before the news, after the news, or as a stand-alone item at any time.

The bulletin is unbranded and is designed to be a sponsored feature, the income from your travel sponsor more than covering the cost. It offers a snapshot of what’s happening on the roads and public transport to keep your listeners informed.

We update half-hourly from 7am till 9am and 4.30pm till 7pm inclusive, plus hourly from 10am till 4pm. Our team is experienced in travel news and will blend in perfectly with your output.

Regional travel news is available for a growing number of areas across the UK during ‘breakfast’ and ‘drive’ shows ( see our table below ). If you run an automated service, adding a regional bulletin will keep your listeners up-to-date with the major issues around them, leaving you free to run your radio station. If you provide ‘as live’ programmes, you can also add your own ultra-local travel news as and when it happens, either replacing the regional bulletin or in addition to it.

Local / Small-scale DAB

We offer a service for stations broadcasting on a small-scale DAB who are interested in carrying a local bulletin, but shared with other stations in the same area. Read more about the Bespoke DAB Bulletin here .

We can provide travel news for your own defined area, be it a city, county or region. With a bespoke/custom bulletin, you get travel news for your TSA, along with the option to have a custom in and out message with your radio station name. Call us on 0161 262 0102 for more details.

The 45-second bulletin contains:

Earth braced for more solar storms this week as radio blackout hits

G et ready for another bout of epic space weather . The mega sunspot group that pummelled Earth with solar radiation earlier this month is on its way back – and could bring more aurora and radio blackouts with it.

Known as AR3664 to its friends, the huddle of spots on the Sun’s surface fired powerful solar flares our way, resulting in dazzling aurora across the UK and Ireland on May 9.

A week later, things got even wilder as AR3664 sent out the strongest solar flare of the current 11-year solar cycle , officially classed as an X8.7-class flare.

However, the Sun is slowly spinning, taking 27 Earth days to complete one full rotation. This means shortly after that monster flare, the sunspot group turned away from the planet.

But they’ll soon be back – and seem just as angry as before.

On Monday, another X-class flare was seen erupting from the Sun’s southeastern limb, just beyond where the surface is visible from Earth.

While not yet in view, scientists are tracking the sunspots, and a map available on spaceweather.com suggests AR3664 was the culprit.

However, because they have been hidden for two weeks, there’s no way to be 100% sure – and so will be given a new name, as is the case for all sunspots when they roam into view.

But whether it’s AR3664 or not, we know it’s feisty.

Solar flares fall into one of five categories – A, B, C, M and X, with X being the largest. Each class is then graded on a scale of one to nine. So this month’s X8.7 flare was almost as strong as they come, while an A1.2 is little more than a solar hiccup.

Monday’s flare was an X2.9, and was so powerful it caused shortwave radio blackouts in East Asia.

Solar flares are massive bursts of radiation from the electromagnetic spectrum, including X-rays and UV radiation. When they smash into Earth, they give an electrical charge to particles in the atmosphere, getting them all excited and sending them zooming around.

This makes it harder for shortwave radio signals to travel through the ionosphere, because they keep bashing into them, scrambling the signals or absorbing them completely.

But it is also this phenomenon that helps create the aurora borealis, or Northern Lights.

Alongside solar flares, sunspots can also emit coronal mass ejections (CEMs) , huge burps of solar plasma, as happened on Monday.

While solar flares travel at the speed of light – taking just eight minutes to arrive – CEMs travel much solar, taking a few days.

Nasa projections suggest the most recent CEM isn’t heading our way. But the next one might.

As the sunspots turn into view, and with the Sun close to its solar maximum – the most active period during its cycle – we can expect more solar fireworks.

UK stargazers were wowed when the earlier flares hit, with the Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, shimmering across the country, which was largely blessed with clear skies.

BBC announces changes and new schedule on Radio Nottingham

The BBC is adopting a digital-led approach to local news which has led to criticism

Local BBC radio stations in the East Midlands are launching changes to their schedules from Monday 6 November.

The BBC has announced changes to Radio Nottingham as the broadcaster launches new schedules on radio stations in the East Midlands. From Monday, November 6, local BBC radio stations will make significant changes.

The new schedule includes changes to afternoon, evening, and weekend schedules for all 39 stations including BBC Radio Nottingham, BBC Radio Derby , and BBC Radio Leicester. As the new changes are put into place, some familiar hosts will be taking on new shows and areas, with the breakfast, mid-morning, and sports programmes remaining largely the same for each radio station.

The changes follow a decision to have a digital-led approach to local news . The move has led to criticism , with the BBC's plans likely to impact significantly on other news providers who aren't supported by a licence fee.

As part of the new approach, jobs are being cut and local programming is merged between counties. The plan to expand its online local news output will inevitably impact on titles like Nottinghamshire Live, which are funded by advertising revenue and cannot run advert-free pages as the licence fee-funded BBC can.

Do you feel safe in Nottingham city centre?

Mansfield MP and Nottinghamshire County Council leader Ben Bradley, who has been in conversation with Nottinghamshire Live about how the changes will impact them, agrees. He said: "The changes will have a doubly negative effect.

"If our newspapers are affected, local business and the local community suffer as a result. The Nottingham Post and other local press are a really important source of news and information. It really is quite damaging I think and I will continue to raise this issue in parliament and continue to urge the BBC to reconsider their spending priorities."

The move to cut jobs and merge local programming has also been criticised by BBC staff. New figures show the listenership on BBC Radio Nottingham has dropped by 35% since 2021.

Kay Wright, Senior Head of Production for BBC East Midlands, said: “These brand-new schedules are just part of an improved local offering audiences can enjoy. With high-impact investigative journalism teams, dedicated to providing strong, regional news, and presenters who are passionate about their local communities – we can ensure that listeners feel more represented than ever across the UK."

According to new data, following the investment into local news, online traffic to BBC Local news stories in England is up by 21% over the last three months compared to the same period last year.

Speaking about the decrease in listeners, a BBC spokesperson said: “This set of listening figures are consistent with those we saw in the first quarter of the year but we have seen audiences dip slightly over the summer months.

“We’re determined to grow the impact of local radio across the country and we’ll be looking in detail at the listening changes over the last period."

Behemoth sunspot AR3664 unleashes its biggest solar flare yet, sparking radio blackouts on Earth (video)

Our turbulent sun is certainly throwing one huge solar-flaring tantrum this week. It's hard keeping up!

Radio blackouts

Incoming solar storms, heightened solar activity.

It's gone and done it again.

Colossal sunspot AR3664 has unleashed its most powerful solar flare yet, and Earth is once again in the firing line.

The X3.98 flare peaked in the early hours this morning (May 10) at 2:54 a.m. (0654 GMT) triggering either temporary or complete loss of high frequency (HF) radio signals across Asia, eastern Europe and eastern Africa.

Related: 4 large incoming solar bursts could supercharge the auroras this weekend

The X3.98 flare this morning is not only AR3664's largest solar flare to date, but also the 4th largest solar flare this solar cycle according to solar physicist Keith Strong 's post on X.

X FLARE IN PROGRESS: Here we go again active region 3664 just produced an X4 flare that peaked at 06:50 UT. That would be the 4th largest X-ray flare so far during this solar cycle. Solar flares are eruptions from sunspots on our sun's surface that emit intense bursts of electromagnetic radiation. They are categorized by size into lettered groups, with X-class flares being the most powerful. Then, there are M-class flares that are 10 times less powerful than X-class flares, followed by C-class flares which are 10 times weaker than M-class flares. B-class are 10 times weaker than C-class flares and, finally, A-class flares are 10 times weaker than B-class flares and have no noticeable consequences on Earth . Within each class, numbers from 1-10 (and beyond for X-class flares) denote a flare's relative strength.

map showing the areas affected by high frequency radio blackouts, the highest frequency radio blackouts are colored red with that region spanning Asia, eastern Europe and eastern Africa.

Shortwave radio blackouts like those witnessed this morning over Asia, eastern Europe and eastern Africa are common occurrences shortly after powerful solar eruptions due to strong pulses of X-rays and extreme ultraviolet radiation emitted during the event.

The radiation travels toward Earth at the speed of light and ionizes (gives electrical charge to) the top of Earth's atmosphere , creating a higher-density environment for the radio signals to navigate through. (Note: These ionizing X-rays are not to be confused with coronal mass ejections , or CMEs, by which plasma and magnetic fields erupt from the sun . CMEs travel at slower speeds and often take several days to reach Earth.)

When attempting to travel through that ionized layer, radio waves can't help but interact with electrons that've now flooded their environment. In doing so, the radio waves lose energy due to more frequent collisions with the electrons . This can lead to radio signals becoming degraded or completely absorbed, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) .

— NASA prepares for intense sun storms on Mars during solar maximum

— Wild solar weather is causing satellites to fall. It's going to get worse.

This recent X-flare eruption was also accompanied by a CME, a large expulsion of plasma and magnetic field from the sun.

"CME FROM RECENT X-FLARE CONFIRMED: Watch the bright region in the SW (AR3664). You will see the X flare go off in it and almost immediately a CME is launched," solar physicist Keith Strong posted on X .

"A CME is now visible and appears the bulk is heading to the west, but an Earth directed component is still likely," according to space weather and aurora website SolarHam's post on X .

This wouldn't exactly come as a surprise. AR3664, along with its explosive "cousin" AR366 — which has since slithered around the solar disk and beyond the view from Earth — has been at the forefront of solar weather news this past week.

Just yesterday (May 9), the NOAA's SWPC issued a level G4 geomagnetic storm watch for this weekend. The predicted elevated geomagnetic activity is a result of several CMEs seen currently barreling toward Earth after several large solar eruptions a few days prior .

Read more: 4 large incoming solar bursts could supercharge the auroras this weekend

There's an image of auroras on the left and on the right information about this weekend's storm watch.

The incredibly active sun this past week is a good indicator that we are approaching solar maximum, the peak period of solar activity during the sun's approximately 11-year solar cycle.

Solar scientists are keeping a watchful eye on the sun as it approaches solar maximum because such heightened activity can indeed impact our lives on Earth.

Energetic solar flares can significantly affect spacecraft, satellites and ground-based technologies, traveling at the speed of light, and they don't give a lot of notice before striking. That's why numerous organizations — including NASA, the NOAA and the U.S. Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA) — are monitoring the sun closely. These organizations can send out warnings to technology and infrastructure sectors vulnerable to solar flare activity so that appropriate precautions can be taken in the event of potentially harmful space weather.

"We can't ignore space weather , but we can take appropriate measures to protect ourselves," NASA says .

But there is no need to worry; so-called "killer flares" do not exist. Though solar flares can significantly disrupt the technological world, they don't contain enough energy to do any lasting damage to Earth itself.

"Even at their worst, the sun's flares are not physically capable of destroying Earth," NASA says.
