Eating Out restaurant review: Voyage Kitchen in Sorrento is a local’s delight worth travelling to

We send people to the moon, AI technology feels years away from being able to read our minds and flying cars could be up for sale as soon as 2025.

And yet humanity hasn’t yet been able to perfect the construction of paper straws.

While I’m all for the positive environmental impact they’re having across the world, it would be nice to sip from one that isn’t the consistency of wet newspaper halfway through.

Big gap in the market there for savvy entrepreneurs.

Now that my shark tank pitch is over, on to the very excellent smoothies at Voyage Kitchen that will cause the downfall of your straw but are worth the milk kid style green moustache when you gulp from the glass.

The green smoothie ($10.50) and passionfruit smoothie ($9) were thick, fresh and reminded me of the kind of generous beverages on offer for $3 at an Indonesian cafe.

Speaking of, a club sandwich ($26.50) has long been a go-to order in Bali after I’ve hit my satay or gado gado limit, and Voyage Kitchen’s version is packed and stacked.

Was it hard to bite into? Yes. Did I let that stop me from trying and making a big mess? Of course not. The chicken breast was nicely cooked and salad elements spot on; I just would have loved a smidge for bacon to ensure I got a hit in each bite.

This seaside cafe in Sorrento has long been a popular spot for locals and it shows in the community feel, with hand-drawn children’s pictures on the wall and Perth-based event posters on another wall. Service is casual and efficient.

The lunch menu comprises salads, burgers, small bites and mains that take you across the world, crab and prawn linguine and nasi goreng.

The grilled salmon ($35) was nicely cooked and served atop a medley of cherry tomatoes, broccolini and Brussels sprouts. Mixing a pumpkin hummus with a sweet soy dressing isn’t something you see, but it worked wonderfully.

If you too are on the lookout for somewhere dishing up nutritious and filling food that feels welcoming and homey, add this coastal cafe to your list.

If you love Italian food and the Italian way of life, you'll feel right at home here. Born in Sicily and raised in Piedmont, owner Carmelo Greco feels a deep culinary connection to his homeland. He heads up the kitchen here alongside Benedetto Russo. In this hidden gem of a restaurant, savour a slice of la dolce vita with classic Italian cuisine and professional, charming service. There are two set menus made using excellent ingredients; one is vegetarian, and you can also choose à la carte. Tip: the parmesan flan is a speciality of the house. The lunch set menu is also intriguing. The interior is done out in a modern, elegant style and the pretty terrace comes into its own on summer days.
