Museumspass Berlin

The Museumspass Berlin allows you to explore Berlin's museum landscape on three consecutive days without paying additional admission. The pass is valid in over 30 Berlin museums, including all the museums of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (including the Museum Island), the Jewish Museum Berlin, the German Museum of Technology and the Museum of Natural History. It is valid for all collections and permanent exhibitions, not for special exhibitions. The Museum Pass is available at the participating museums, at Berlin Tourist Infos (e.g. at the Brandenburger Tor, the Humboldt Forum, the main railway station or at BER Airport) and online.

Berlin Welcome Card

The Berlin WelcomeCard is worthwhile for all visitors to Berlin. With it, you can travel for two to six days on the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, streetcar and bus throughout Berlin and also receive at least 25% discount at many museums, theaters, city tours and sightseeing tours. The Berlin WelcomeCard must be validated like a normal ticket and is valid from that point on. It is available at the Berlin-Brandenburg Airport, at the ticket counters and ticket machines of the underground and S-Bahn stations, in many Berlin hotels, at the Berlin Tourist Infos or online. The Berlin WelcomeCard is accompanied by a brochure with tour suggestions, a removable city map and an overview of all participating partners. The Berlin WelcomeCard is available in the classic version or as the Berlin Welcome Card Museum Island with free admission on three consecutive days to the museums on Museum Island.

Berlin CityTourCard

With the CityTourCard you can travel everywhere in Berlin by S-Bahn, U-Bahn, streetcar and bus. In addition, you get up to 30% discount on selected city tours, interactive exhibitions, clubs and restaurants. The card is available at ticket counters and ticket machines at underground and S-Bahn stations. It is valid from the time of the first validation. The City Tour Card is available for the Berlin AB or ABC fare zones.

Potsdam's Palaces in one day

In Potsdam's palace landscape, many palaces and park buildings are just a walk away from each other. If you have a whole day and want to see more than two palaces, you should opt for the sanssouci+ combination ticket. It is valid for all palaces except Sacrow Palace and Stern Hunting Lodge and includes fixed admission times at Sanssouci Palace. The sanssouci+ combination ticket is available at all palace ticket offices, in the visitor centers and online.

Charlottenburg combined ticket

It is worthwhile to wander through the garden of Charlottenburg Palace, because it has very different parts. The royal buildings are also spread across the park: to the east of Charlottenburg Palace the New Pavilion, further north the Mausoleum with the tomb of Queen Luise and the Belvedere with the porcelain collection. With the combi-ticket charlottenburg+ you can also see all these buildings from the inside. It is available at the individual palace ticket offices, at the visitor centers, and online. Special exhibitions in the palace are not included in the Kombiticket.

The Museum Island in one day

For visitors to Berlin who want to see several buildings on Museum Island in one day, the area ticket Museum Island is worthwhile. With this card you can visit the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, the Pergamonmuseum, the Pergamon Panorama and the Bode Museum.

Due to construction work, the Pergamonmuseum will be closed from 23 October 2023.

Jewish Museum Berlin – Berlinische Galerie

With a ticket for one of the two neighboring museums, you get discounted admission to the other on the same day or the following two days.

Museum für Fotografie - C/O Berlin

Visitors who would like to see the exhibitions at the Museum für Fotografie - Helmut Newton Stiftung and at the neighboring C/O Berlin on the same day will receive a reduction of 2 € on the normal admission price or 1 € on the reduced admission price at the other institution.

Combiticket Brücke-Museum and Kunsthaus Dahlem

With the Combiticket you can visit the exhibitions of the other house for 2€ more and 1€ more for reduced tickets. The tickets are available at the museum ticket offices.

Combiticket Museum Barberini and DAS MINSK Kunsthaus in Potsdam

The combination ticket allows you to enter both museums once on each of two consecutive opening days. The two museums are closed on Tuesdays. The ticket can be purchased at the museum box office and in the webshop. A time slot is not required.

The Berlin Welcome Card includes a travel ticket for the public transport service (such as bus & rail) and the Berlin Welcome Card guide . The Berlin Welcome Card is available as an online ticket and a hardticket . When purchasing the Welcome Card, each visitor will also receive the practical Berlin Welcome Card guide. One guide is sufficient per group (maximum 4 people), another guide is needed for each additional person.

Upon presentation of the ticket and the guide, visitors will receive the respective discounts & rebates. When purchasing the Berlin Welcome Card including Museum Island, the visitor gets once-daily free access to the museums on Berlin’s Museum Island (special exhibitions are excluded) during the period of validity.

The 48 hours and 72 hours variants have a sliding period of validity. The card is valid for 48 or 72 hours from the moment it is used for the first time (validation). Example: You have a Berlin WelcomeCard for 48 hours. You validate the card on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The card is then valid until 09:29 on Monday. The 4, 5 & 6 day variant is valid from the first calendar day of use until midnight on the last calendar day. Example: You have a Berlin WelcomeCard for 4 days. You can validate the card on Tuesday at any time. The card is then valid until midnight (midnight) on Friday.

Online tickets do not have to be separately validated before being used for the first time .

Which types of Berlin Welcome Card are there?

The Berlin Welcome Card is available as two ticket types:

Type 1: as a discount card with many discount partners:

  • Berlin (tariff zone Berlin AB, valid for one adult and up to 3 children between the ages of 6 and up to and including 14 years old)
  • Berlin+Potsdam (tariff zone Berlin ABC, valid for one adult and up to 3 children between the ages of 6 and up to and including 14 years old)
  • Berlin Welcome Card Museum Island (tariff zone Berlin AB or Berlin+Potsdam ABC, valid for one adult including free entry into the museums at Museum Island, except for special exhibitions! Children up to and including 14 years old travel free on the ticket).

Type 2: as an all-round carefree pass with more than 30x entry included:

  • Berlin Welcome Card all inclusive with and without travel ticket for the tariff zone Berlin ABC (up to 3 children travel free of charge on an adult’s travel ticket) including free entry at more than 30 partners valid for one adult. Children age 3 - 14 need their own WelcomeCard all inclusive for kids.

Important : for journeys from/to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), you will need a Berlin Welcome Card for the zone ABC. Unfortunately, an extension of the Berlin Welcome Card AB to include a connection ticket for tariff zone C is not possible.

Who can you bring along on a Berlin Welcome Card?

Any number of children up to their 6th birthday can travel free with all types of Berlin Welcome Card. What’s more, up to 3 children between the ages of 6 and 14 can also travel free on their parents’ ticket or when accompanying an adult. Prams, luggage and one dog can also travel free of charge. A reduced-fare travel ticket is required for each additional dog. You need an additional bicycle ticket if you want to take your bike.

Where can I buy the Berlin Welcome Card (sales outlets)?

Before your arrival in Berlin As an online ticket, ticket voucher or hardticket in our online shop, or by ringing the Berlin Service Center on: +49 (0)30- 25 00 25

On-site At Berlin tourist information centres,  many Berlin hotels as well as at sales outlets and public transport companies' tickets machines (S-Bahn Berlin GmbH and BVG). You can also get the Berlin Welcome Card directly upon arrival in the arrivals area at the Berlin airports. You can then get the associated guide at the Berlin tourist information centres as well as at BVG and S-Bahn sales outlets.

Which regions are covered by the tariff zones Berlin AB or Berlin ABC?

The sections A and B each cover the actual urban area, whereby the outer limit of section B is largely identical to the city limits. Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is located in tariff zone Berlin C . For this reason, tourists arriving at the Berlin Brandenburg airport BER need the Berlin Welcome Card for the tariff zone ABC in order to have unrestricted use of public transport. Section C extends – measured from the city limits – up to a distance of 10 to 15 km into the surrounding areas. Exceptions here are tourist and special lines and journeys with Deutsche Bahn. Unfortunately, an extension of the Berlin Welcome Card AB to a connection ticket for tariff zone Berlin C is not possible.

Can you travel to Potsdam with the Berlin Welcome Card?

Visitors to Berlin who want to travel to Potsdam or Sachsenhausen need the Berlin Welcome Card for tariff zone ABC in order to use the public transport service without any restrictions. An extension of the Berlin Welcome Card AB to a connection ticket for tariff zone C is unfortunately not possible.

How is the period of validity for the Berlin Welcome Card calculated?

It is possible to validate the card up to 31/12 of the calendar year in which the purchase was made. However, the latest period of validity is up to 02/01 (48-hour ticket) or 03/01 (72-hour ticket) or 03/01 at 12am (4-day ticket) or 04/01 at 12am (5-day ticket) or 05/01 at 12am (6-day ticket) of the following year.

The public transport ticket must be validated once before starting the journey in the ticket validation machine (except online tickets) . The discounts included in the guide are exclusively valid combined with your Berlin Welcome Card travel ticket and only after its validation.

Where can I get the guide if I already have the ticket?

The guide belongs to the Berlin Welcome Card and must always be presented when claiming discounts. You will receive the guide upon presentation of your Berlin Welcome Card ticket (from the machines) at Berlin tourist information centres as well as at BVG and S-Bahn sales outlets. The guide is also available as a downloadable version .

Can I cancel or exchange the ticket?

Booked tickets cannot be cancelled. The ticket cannot be exchanged / rebooked for a different day of validity. All the details are listed in our General Terms and Conditions.

Is the Berlin City Pass Worth it? 2022 Berlin Travel Card Review for Museums & Attractions

Berlin is now one of the most visited cities in all of Europe, and one way of seeing a lot of the city in a short time is with the Berlin Pass. Similar to other city passes, it includes free admission to the top museums and attractions. It’s a good deal for many people, but certainly not for everyone.

The Go Berlin Pass offers access to over 60 attractions and sights, so it’s now an excellent deal for families and even groups of adults. Unlike most other huge capitals, Berlin doesn’t have a great number of “checklist attractions” and the city itself is the primary highlight. Fortunately, the Go Berlin Pass includes all of the most popular attractions, as well as 4 different (open-top bus, river, bike, walking) tours. Each visitor’s goals will determine whether the pass is right for them.

Note: This article was first written in 2013 and has been updated and expanded regularly, most recently in April 2022

Special Note: Currently, the Go Berlin Pass is closed. We’ll update this page with new and updated information once the Berlin Pass is available again.

The short version on who should buy a Go Berlin Pass

visit berlin museum pass

But if you want to see Berlin from a variety of angles in a short time, the Go Berlin Pass is the better option.

The Go Berlin Pass not only covers the Pergamon and other top museums, but also the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, Madame Tussauds, the Berlin Dungeon, LEGOLAND, the Berlin Dom (cathedral), and Bode Museum. Better still, it includes a 24-hour hop-on, hop-off bus tour, a river cruise, a bike tour (bikes are provided), and a walking tour. Put all of these together in 2 or 3 days and you’ve saved money while seeing the top sights and experiencing Berlin itself.

The Go Berlin Pass is great value for families

visit berlin museum pass

LEGOLAND is obviously most popular with families with younger children, while the Madame Tussauds and Berlin Dungeons are more popular with adults and older children. It’s easy to visit 2, 3, or 4 of these newly added attractions in just a few hours because they are all so close together, so this adds a LOT of value to the Go Berlin Pass. Also, because children can be picky about attractions, it’s nice to know that there’s a large variety to choose from.

What's included in the Go Berlin Pass

  • Go Berlin Attractions Pass: Admission to over 60 popular local attractions.
  • Berlin Guidebook – A free and helpful guidebook available in English, German & Italian that also includes itineraries.

Top sights and attractions included in the Go Berlin Pass

Hop-On Hop-Off Big Bus Berlin  (1-day hop-on-hop-off bus tour) – €30.00

This bus tour let’s you hop on and off at will to explore area attractions.

Checkpoint Charlie Museum  – €14.50

This is a fascinating museum that documents the Berlin Wall as well as all the crazy ways people tried to sneak through it.

Madame Tussauds Berlin  – €25.00

It’s easy to make fun of this international chain of wax museums, until you visit one and see why they are so popular and expensive. If you buy a Berlin Pass, you’ll be very impressed by at least a quick visit to Madame Tussauds.

Berlin Dungeon  – €22.50

This interactive experience includes an impressive walk-through of live performances and a river raft ride that you won’t forget. There are similar attractions in other cities, but at least this one is a short walk from many other included attractions so it’s easy to do a quick visit.

AquaDom & SEA LIFE  – €19.00

This impressive aquarium is especially popular with children and it features the largest free-standing cylindrical aquarium in the world. It may not be worth visiting if you have to pay full price, but it’s across from the Berlin Dungeons, Berlin Dom, and Pergamon Museum, so you’ll be in the area anyway. In other words, it’s fun for at least a quick visit if you have a Berlin Pass.

LEGOLAND Discovery Centre  – €11.70

A smaller version of the LEGOLAND theme parks in other cities, this one obviously appeals to younger children. It’s located next to Potzdamer Platz so it’s close to other attractions and you’ll be nearby for sure.

Hidden Berlin and ALL Main Sites Walking Tour  – €14.00

Berlin has free walking tours with large groups where you are expected to tip at the end. These are smaller groups that move quicker with no pressure to tip. Includes a stop for a refreshment during the tour.

Pergamon Museum  – €12.00

Easily Berlin’s most famous and important museum, this is the one to see even if you aren’t a museum person.

Berlin River Cruise  – €15.00

This 1-hour circular river cruise allows you to see the city from a different angle, and is great for photographers.

Berliner Dom  – €7.00

The Berlin Cathedral is near the Pergamon on Museum Island, so it’s easy to pop in for a look at the city’s most ornate religious building. It’s free to walk into the cathedral, so this admission fee is to be able to go through the museum and up the stairs to the top for the best views in central Berlin.

Bode Museum  – €10.00

This is the other big attraction on Museum Island, featuring sculptures and other art and artifacts from the middle ages to early renaissance.

There are lots of additional museums and attractions included, but most are not well known and fairly cheap to enter without a pass.

Is the Go Berlin Pass a good deal?

visit berlin museum pass

Berlin also has a couple of museum passes that include transport, but those don’t include the popular tours or the Checkpoint Charlie Museum. So if you want to see a lot of Berlin outside of its traditional museums, the Berlin Pass is the better deal. If you primarily want to just go from museum to museum, then the others are cheaper and better.

Important advice for getting the best value from a Go Berlin Pass

Some people buy these city passes and then later complain that they didn’t get much use out of them, but those visitors usually make the same two mistakes. So if you are considering a Berlin Pass then keep this in mind:

1. Starting early is important

If you can leave your hotel by around 9am then you can get to the most popular attractions before the crowds have built up. This way you’ll have two great sights done before lunch, and the rest of the afternoon to do a couple more things while the attractions are a bit more crowded. If you are the type who can’t get out of your hotel until 11am or noon, then a Go Berlin Pass is probably a bad idea. You’ll also want to note that the Go Berlin Pass runs on consecutive calendar days, and not on a 24 hour basis.

2. Plan your sightseeing route in advance

The other mistake that some people make is that they head to their first attraction and only when they finish do they decide which thing to see next. Berlin is a huge city and some things are a bit spread out, while others are bunched together in one area. If you consult the handy guidebook that comes with your Go Berlin Pass to see which places can be combined in an efficient order, you’ll get great use out of the pass.

Who the Go Berlin Pass is perfect for

visit berlin museum pass

The Berlin museums tend to be cheap (around €10 each) except for the most famous ones, so a Go Berlin Pass is more about the hop-on hop-off bus tour, the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, the river cruise, and the highly-recommended bike tour. If those things appeal to you and you want to see the city in 5 days or fewer, the Go Berlin Pass is good value.

Who the Go Berlin Pass is not good for

If you only have 2 days in Berlin then honestly, it’s a close call. You’ll be able to do the bus tour and the other main highlights, but you might be rushing around more than is ideal to cram it all in. And if you are a backpacker on the lowest possible budget, a Go Berlin Pass isn’t going to be a good deal. You’ll be able to find cheap and free things easily if you can’t afford the main attractions.

You can  buy the Berlin Pass at the lowest available price

If you buy the Berlin Pass is there any tourist sites that you need to confirm prior to arrival and if so how do you do it with the pass?

For almost all attractions you just show up and you go in, but there are a few tours where you need to make reservations with a Go Berlin Pass and for those there are instructions along with the package you’ll get. But again, for almost all of the better attractions you just show up. -Roger

Unfortunately they are rude and impolite. My walet was stolen in a croded Ubahn station togather with 2 five days tickets. I called them telling I have the receipt in order to see how they can help me in the 3 days that were left. The answer was I should take care of my tickets and I have to accept this answer and that’s it. A marvelous help to a customer in need.

I’m sorry to hear about you getting robbed and I understand your frustration. But I’ve dealt with tickets and passes like this all over the world and unfortunately these companies are not set up to offer partial refunds or replacement passes. Fortunately, robbery is pretty rare in Europe so you got very unlucky. -Roger

Hi, its interesting to read about Berlin pass. We r planning to visit Europe individually ( not with tour operator) and most of time spending in Germany. Soy question is (1) ” could we get online Berlin pass before we will come to Berlin?- if yes then.. (2) if we don’t getting visa to come EU, then its a refundable fees which we spent through online booking? Please reply. Thanking you. Your humble- Anant.

Yes, the Berlin Pass is ONLY available for purchase online and technically you can’t get it in person once you arrive. However, you can buy it online and pick it up in person at the Redemption Desk once you arrive, and you save the shipping charge that way. If you buy online and have it shipped to you then you can cancel within 14 days of your order for a full refund, but if I were you I’d wait until you get the visa and then book online for pickup in Berlin. I hope that helps and have a great trip. -Roger

I would like to know if the” Martin-Gropus-Bau”-includes free admission in the “Berlin Pass” ?

It appears that it’s not included in the Berlin Pass. Sorry. -Roger

Berlin pass review — is the berlin pass worth it.

We review the Berlin Pass to determine it's a good value.

visit berlin museum pass

Berlin is packed with multiple world-class museums and other attractions, so a lot of visitors look at getting the Berlin Pass as a way to save some money. So we wanted to do an in-depth Berlin Pass Review to see if this city pass was worth the money.

UPDATE (March 2020): The Berlin Pass is now called the Berlin: Go City Pass . The pass is very similar but there are a few tweaks. It’s still owned by the same company but the branding is different. Check out the new Berlin Pass on the Go City Website to get all the details. Read my Go Berlin City Pass Review here.

Berlin Pass Variations

They recently updated the Berlin Pass so now it only comes in a three-day version. You also have the option to add public transportation to your pass.

Three-Day Berlin Pass Without Public Transportation

  • 3-Day Adult Berlin Pass: €124
  • 3-Day Child Berlin Pass: €92

Three-Day Berlin Pass With Public Transportation

  • 3-Day Adult Berlin Pass: €148
  • 3-Day Child Berlin Pass: €108

SUPER-QUICK BERLIN PASS REVIEW

Here is a brief overview of the pass’s value (we’ll go into more detail later).

The Berlin Pass covers most of Berlin’s top sights and museums, a large number of tours (bike tour, walking tour, bus tour, etc), and a number of other tourist attractions.

The Berlin Pass can be a good deal if:

  • You want to see a lot in a few days. You’ll need to do about 2-3 things from the pass each day.
  • You’re interested in the pass’s many other offerings besides museums (bike tour, walking tour, boat tour, various other attractions, etc.)
  • You’re traveling with kids because the pass has many kid-friendly options (which are expensive).
  • You want to skip most of the lines.

The Berlin Pass probably isn’t a good deal if:

  • You’re only really interested in museums and not multiple tours or other activities.
  • You want to spread your sightseeing over multiple days.
  • You don’t want to jam-pack your schedule with activities.
  • You want to see multiple sights that are not on the pass.
  • You’re on a budget and will only do one or two attractions each day.

IN-DEPTH BERLIN PASS REVIEW

Berlin Pass value

Here we go! Let’s get down to the brass tacks about the Berlin Pass.

Museums and Sights

Like most city passes, the Berlin Pass offers entry to most of all Berlin’s most popular museums — there are a few that aren’t on the pass but the major sights are there.

  • Berlin’s most popular museum featuring the Pergamon Altar and Ishtar Gate. Note: Pergamon Altar is closed for renovation until 2019.
  • Know for European sculpture a large collection of Byzantine art.
  • Features sculptures of Pharaohs, decorated coffins, and the famous bust of Nefertiti.
  • Details the history of the Berlin Wall and the various ways people tried to escape the wall.
  • Art and sculptures from ancient Greek and Roman times.
  • Paintings and sculptures from the surrealist period.
  • The history and work of Bauhaus — Germany’s most important school of architecture.
  • See The Other Museums Listed On The Berlin Pass

It also offers multiple different tours. They’re all solid tours. However, most people will probably only go on a two, maybe three tours — especially in the span of two or three days.

  • A good way to get a quick view of the city.
  • Excellent bike tour.
  • Another great tour. Insider Walking Tours offer multiple themed tours — WWII and Hitler, Cold War Berlin, Famous Berlin Walk, Berlin Today, etc.
  • See Berlin from the water. This is a great nighttime activity.
  • Look like a total dork 🙂

Other “Touristy” Attractions

This is where the Berlin Pass either becomes worth the money or it loses its value. That’s because these attractions are fairly expensive but they’re also ultra touristy and are geared toward kids — like LEGO Land, Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, Berlin Dungeon, etc.

If a few of these attractions are on your list then the Berlin Pass quickly becomes worth the money.

  • MADAME TUSSAUDS BERLIN: €24.
  • BERLIN DUNGEON: €21.
  • AQUADOM & SEA LIFE BERLIN: €18
  • LEGOLAND: €18
  • OLYMPIASTADION BERLIN: €7

Travel Card

Berlin is a very spread-out city and there isn’t really a “city center” — so you’re sure to use Berlin’s public transportation system.

The nice thing about the Berlin Pass is the fact that the travel card is optional. Many passes lump this into the pass so you’re often forced to pay for transport you might not use.

The travel card with the three-day pass is an extra €24. A normal unlimited day pass is €7. For most single rides, you’ll pay €2.80 or €1.70 for rides three stops or less. So, basically, if you use public transport more than two times a day then it’s worth buying the pass option that includes public transportation.

PRICE BREAKDOWN — DOING THE MATH

So is the Berlin Pass worth the price? We’ve done some math on a common three-day itinerary to assess the pass’s value.

The price for a 3-Day Adult Berlin Pass is €124 so that averages about €42/day. So our goal is to get more than €42 of value out of the pass for each day.

Note One: At this point, I’m not going to include any of the “other” attractions (MADAME TUSSAUDS, LEGOLAND, etc.) since it’s not something we think the average budget traveler would do anyway. However, your travel style might be different than our style so be sure to take that into consideration.

Note Two: Berlin has a few free museums/sights (Reichstag Dome, East Side Gallery, Holocaust Memorial, Brandenburg Gate, etc.) and a few other great paid museums (DDR Museum, etc) that aren’t included in the pass. Therefore, don’t forget about these other sights when planning how many things you’ll do each day — personally, we don’t like visiting more than two museums in a day.

  • PERGAMON MUSEUM (€19) + Fat Tire Bike Tour (€28) = €47
  • NEUES MUSEUM (€12) + CHECKPOINT CHARLIE MUSEUM (€14.50) + EGYPTIAN MUSEUM (€12) = €38.5
  • BODE MUSEUM (€12) + BAUHAUS ARCHIVE (€10) + River Cruise (€15) = €37

So, this scenario, the total costs of all these is about the same as buying tickets separately.

But let’s looks at a few other most common travel scenarios:

  • Scenario One — Low Budget:  If you were to book all these museum tickets separately and paid for single tickets on public transportation and only took a walking tour then you would spend around  €80-€100 .
  • Scenario Two — Normal Traveler:  If you were to visit one museum a day (possibly two museums one of the days), booked two tours (river cruise and bike tour), and used unlimited public transport then you would spend around  €100-€115 .
  • Scenario Three — Do-It-All:  If you were to visit two museums a day, do one tour a day, and use unlimited public transportation then you would spend around  €175-€185 .

Remember, the Berlin Pass (Three-Day + Unlimited Public Transportation) is €148. So, in most instances, you’ll need to do multiple activities to make this pass worth the price.

Final Thoughts

The Berlin Pass ends up being a good deal if you really want to pack in the sights — and especially if you want to visit the Berlin Dungeon and Madame Tussauds. Basically, you need to do two museums/attractions a day and one tour each day to make the Berlin Pass a good deal.

Save with the Cheap Museum Pass Berlin on Sightseeing Tickets

Published on March 30, 2024

by Henk Bekker

in Berlin , Germany , N24

Use the €32 Berlin Museum Pass for free admission tickets to over 30 museums, galleries, and exhibitions.

The Berlin Museum Pass is a fantastic savings deal giving access to over 30 exhibitions and galleries for three days for only €32.

Berlin Neues Museum Tickets

Culture and art lovers visiting Berlin may save big with the cheap Museum Pass Berlin. This savings pass gives free admission to over 30 of Berlin’s top museums, galleries, and exhibitions on three consecutive days for only €32. Almost all of Berlin’s top museums, including the Pergamon and all Museum Island permanent exhibitions, are included in this savings ticket, but free time-slot reservations may be required at some top museums.

Save with the Museum Pass Berlin

Museum Pass Berlin 3 Day Tciekt

Berlin has a variety of travel cards and savings passes that make sightseeing and transportation for tourists cheaper but none save more on visits to museums, galleries, and exhibitions than the Museum Pass Berlin.

The Museum Pass Berlin gives admission to over 30 of Berlin’s museums and galleries on three consecutive days for €32. A reduced-price version is also available at €16 mostly for pupils, students, and the unemployed (suitable identification required) but note that under 18s enter many museums for free anyway.

The Berlin Museum Pass can be fantastic value for money and often pays for itself after four museum visits. The more expensive museums in Berlin charge around €12-€14 (Pergamon DasPanorama, Neues Museum, Neue Nationalgalerie, Hamburger Bahnhof), or €24 for a Museum Island day ticket, but even two visits per day to smaller museums should save the bearer of the Museum Pass handsomely.

Buying and Saving with the Berlin Museum Pass

The Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin was inspired by Greek temples

The Museum Pass Berlin is available from the ticket windows of most museums where the card is valid, from many hotels, and from the Visit Berlin tourist information offices.

Time-slot reservations are currently rarely required for museums in Berlin but it is a good idea to book a time slot if possible, especially over weekends and holiday periods. Time-slot reservations may usually be made online for free at any museum website — it is often even possible before buying a ticket or pass.

Although the Museum Pass Berlin is often advertised as “no queues at the museum”, it is NOT a real skip-the-line ticket. At some museums, it is still necessary to pick up a free ticket at the ticket desk. However, if the ticket queues are long, check directly at the entrance. All the Berlin State Museums now accept the pass at the entrance door without needing a museum-specific ticket, except at major exhibitions when a time-slot reservation is additionally required. (Add €6 to book an essential timeslot to see the Caspar Friedrich David exhibition in the Alte Nationalgalerie from April to August 2024.)

For some large museums, including the Alte Nationalgalerie , Pergamonmuseum (closed until 2027), Neues Museum , and Neue Nationalgalrie , it is possible to skip the line by making free online timeslot reservations – see Tickets for the Berlin State Museums for details. (No matter how the ticket was bought, make free reservations for museums where possible.)

Tips on Saving with the Museum Pass Berlin

Berlin German Museum of Technology

The Museum Pass Berlin is a great choice when going to several museums, especially if only interested in a smaller part of a museum or even popping in just to see a single item or artwork. Many of Berlin’s larger museums such as the Deutsches Technikmuseum , Neues Museum , Gemäldegalerie , Pergamon , and German History Museum have more to see than anybody could manage in a single day.

Children under 18 have free admission to most (but not all) of Berlin’s museums.

The pass is valid for three calendar days, not 72 hours, so start using it early on the first morning. (The over-ambitious may time the last visit to a museum that is open at night.)

The pass is not transferable – names and the date of first use must be entered on the card in ink.

Exploding postal coach

Most museums are closed one day per week but enough museums are open even on Mondays (e.g. in the Humboldt Forum) to fill a busy day of sightseeing. (Many top museums are also closed on Tuesdays from mid-April 2024 .)

Museums are usually open on holidays but are very likely to be closed on December 24 and 31.

Normally, the Museum Pass Berlin gives admission to the complete museum but occasionally there may be an additional charge for special temporary exhibitions, and very rarely that surcharge may be compulsory even if interested only in seeing the permanent collection.

A few museums are free for a few hours per week, e.g. Cinematic on Thursday evenings and Communication on Tuesday evenings. Many museums are open for free on the first Sunday of the month (and mostly require online reservations).

Many sights in Berlin are free and thus best seen on day four or five: e.g. Museum in the Kulturbrauerei , Tränenpalast , Berlin Wall Memorial in Bernauer Straße, and Topography of Terror documentation centers. Admission to the Reichstag is free but advance reservations are essential, or book a tour .

Top Museums are Covered

The Museum Pass Berlin is currently valid at:

Napoleons Hat in the German History Museum

Most of Berlin’s top museums, including all the national state museums , are covered by the Museum Pass Berlin but many of the new, high-tech experience museums that popped up in especially the Berlin-Mitte area of Berlin in recent years are not included.

The fun-to-visit DDR Museum is not covered, nor is the somewhat pricy, but long opening hours and interesting, Wall Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie .

Save with a Berlin Welcome Card

Another savings pass aimed at visitors to Berlin is the Berlin Welcome Card . This savings pass is predominantly a transportation travel card but also gives savings on some sights. The Berlin Welcome Card Museumsinsel includes admission to all the SMB museums on Museums Island while the pricier Berlin Welcome Card All-Inclusive covers many museums and further Berlin sights.

For active museum visits, a Museum Pass Berlin may be worth buying in addition to the Welcome travel card to get free entry rather than just small discounts, although the Museum Pass plus a standard transportation day or week tickets are good combinations too.

More on the Berlin State Museums (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin):

Note new opening times for many Berlin museums from mid-April 2024. Timeslot reservations are essential only for the Caspar David Friedrich exhibition (until 4 August 2024) but sensible (and sometimes needed in busy periods!) for the Alte Nationalgalerie , Gemäldegalerie , Neue Nationalgalerie , Neues Museum , and Pergamon – Das Panorama . (The Pergamon Museum itself is closed until 2027!). Timeslots are released only a few weeks in advance. Online tickets are available from GetYourGuide , which seems to have timeslots available when SMB has already sold out. Many passes and multi-museum tickets are again sold ( Kulturforum / Museums Island ). Individual museum ticket prices range from €8 to €14 (€20 for special exhibitions). Online tickets are skip-the-line — go directly to the gallery entrance to scan the code but pick up free audioguides first.

Berlin Welcome Card and Museum Berlin Pass: Are They Worth it?

Are the Berlin Welcome Card and Museum Berlin Pass truly worth the investment?

As you plan your visit to the vibrant German capital, navigating through the plethora of tourist offerings can be overwhelming. These two popular passes promise convenience and savings for exploring Berlin’s rich cultural and historical attractions.

The Berlin Welcome Card opens doors to the city’s extensive public transportation network, offering not only seamless travel but also discounts at various museums, tours, and restaurants.

On the other hand, the Museum Berlin Pass focuses specifically on cultural places granting access to the best museums and galleries.

I experienced both first-hand. In this article, I’ll break down the value these passes bring, exploring their cost-effectiveness, benefits, and potential drawbacks.

Whether you’re a history buff, art enthusiast, or simply eager to explore Berlin’s top sites, this Berlin Welcome card review will help you decide if these passes are a valuable addition to your itinerary or if opting for individual tickets might be the better choice.

Berlin Welcome Card

train with museum and city skyline when using the welcome to berlin card

The Welcome to Berlin Card is a traveller’s key to unlocking the city’s top attractions with ease. It is the official tourist ticket.

Offering a seamless blend of convenience and savings, this Berlin card provides unlimited access to the city’s extensive public transportation system, ensuring stress-free exploring. Beyond hassle-free travel, the Berlin card serves as a gateway to numerous discounts and perks, making it a cost-effective choice for visitors.

Advantages of the Welcome to Berlin Card

  • Unlimited Public Transportation: Enjoy unrestricted use of buses, trams, and trains within Berlin’s ABC zones (including the Airport and Potsdam).
  • Savings on Attractions: Access exclusive discounts at over 180 partner attractions, including museums, tours, and restaurants of up to 50% off.
  • Free City Map and Guide: Navigate the city effortlessly with a complimentary map and guide, helping you make the most of your visit.
  • Flexible Duration Options: Choose from 48 hours up to 6 days, catering to various trip lengths.
  • Family-Friendly: Children up to the age of 14 travel for free, making it an excellent option for family vacations. Not to mention that many of the discounted attractions will appeal to families, including the AquaDom and SEA Life, Legoland, Little Big City, and more.

Drawbacks of the Berlin Museums Pass

While the Berlin Welcome Card offers notable advantages, it’s important to consider potential drawbacks before making your purchase.

  • Limited Validity Period: The card’s benefits are time-bound, and if your stay in Berlin is short or if your schedule is tight, you might not fully maximize its value.
  • Restricted Zones: The card covers specific transit zones. For Berlin’s city centre attractions, you will mostly use zone AB. However, the ABC zone covers transit to the airport, Potsdam and Spandau, a charming Berlin neighbourhood. There is a price difference to consider when purchasing the Pass and which public transport ticket you will most likely use.
  • Exclusion of Special Exhibitions: Some museums and attractions may not extend discounts to special exhibitions, events, or certain guided tours, potentially limiting your access.
  • Individual Preferences: If you have specific attractions in mind and the included ones don’t align with your interests, purchasing individual tickets might be more economical. For example, if you are keen to see the 5 world-famous UNESCO-listed museums located on Museum Island they are not included in The Classic Berlin Welcome Card.
  • Single Traveler vs. Group Value: The card’s value is often more apparent for solo travellers or smaller groups. Larger groups might find alternative ticketing options more cost-effective.
  • No Skip-the-Line Access: It’s important to note that the Berlin Welcome Card does not provide skip-the-line privileges. During peak travel times or busy seasons, you may encounter lines at popular attractions, potentially impacting the efficiency of your visit.

My Experience with the Welcome Card Berlin Offers

cathedral dome skyline when using the berlin welcome card

I had a 6-day Welcome to Berlin Card. This is how I used it. However, keep in mind I’ve been living in Berlin for 3 months, and my need to see everything in 6 days wasn’t as important to me as a first-time visitor to Berlin.

But it gives you an idea of the advantages you would enjoy by concentrating on exploring as much as possible during the duration of your pass.

Rausch Schokoladenhaus

  • €4.90 each way / Saved €2.45

The cost of the 6-day Berlin Tourist Card was €57, and the total savings were €65.50 . This is the minimum as I didn’t account for the extra times I used Berlin transit to go out for dinner at night, and I did buy more than one chocolate bar from the amazing chocolatier shop. How can you say no to chocolate, and 50% off?

The card turned out to be a good deal and I for that reason recommend anyone visiting Berlin to consider its immense value.

Travel tip! DO NOT buy your Berlin Card through third-party booking services like Get Your Guide, Viator or Trip Advisor, you will pay more. To get the best price, buy directly from Berlin Tourism (link below).

Our tour guides are always getting questions about the various discount passes offered in Berlin, and they have a lot of useful advice that we've compiled into this post.

This post compares the Berlin Welcome Card, the Berlin Pass, and several other tourist discount attraction passes available to you in Berlin. ( auf Deutsch ) ( en Español )

If you're curious about whether or not these passes are worth it, make sure to check our section covering tips from locals and travelers , as they have a lot of interesting recommendations.

  • Discount Cards
  • All-Inclusive Passes
  • Museum Pass
  • Other Cards & Passes
  • Combo Packages
  • Tips From Locals

Disclosure:  While our recommendations are always unbiased, we may receive a small share of sales through some of the links below at no cost to you. See the  full text .

Berlin visitors have a choice of several city passes to help them navigate the city by public transport and offer discounts for museums, sightseeing tours, attractions, bars, restaurants, and clubs.

Finding the right pass can be confusing, but we’ll do our best to provide you with highlights and insider tips to help you find the best choice for your trip.

The first step to finding your pass is to figure out as best you can what you want to do while visiting Berlin. It's best not to let any single tourist discount pass or card dictate to you what you will see.

Secondly, you should decide whether you will use a public transport ticket .

There are many different tourist passes to choose from in Berlin, but none offer exactly the same benefits as another.

Berlin Discount Passes

A discount pass , such as the Berlin Welcome Card, provides free travel on the Berlin public transportation system along with deals on various tours and attractions (think al-a-carte).

Your savings are more limited with these cards, but they are less expensive and you have more flexibility than an all-inclusive pass.

All Inclusive Berlin Tourist Pass

An all-inclusive pass , such as the Berlin Welcome Card All Inclusive, will allow you free entry to visit certain attractions (think all-inclusive resort).

These passes are limited by the # of days that you choose and one of the options o

So, you can visit as many attractions and tours as you can fit in that timespan.

These are the most expensive options, but you have the potential to save the most money with them.

There are two all-inclusive passes to choose from and we compare them below .

Berlin Museum Pass

Meanwhile, the Museum Pass will give you free admission to more than 30 different museums in and around the city, but it does not include transportation or any other discounted attractions.

If all else fails, you can also save money on various activities in Berlin by taking advantage of combo deals offered by bus tour companies.

DISCOUNT PASSES

If you don’t feel like spending a lot of money on an all-inclusive pass, or maybe you are not sure that you would use the all-inclusive card enough to make it worth buying, then you might want to consider one of the following discount passes.

These services typically include free public transport along with discounts on several popular attractions.

This is a great option for travelers who want to take control of the places that they visit and save money on transportation.

If you are considering this opportunity, make sure to read about how the AB/ABC Zone tickets work in Berlin.

Berlin Welcome Card

This Berlin Welcome Card offers a discount pass that can help you save a lot of money on admission to several popular attractions.

It also offers an option to include all 5 museums of Museum Island.

With 25% to 50% off at over 200 venues and a public transport pass included, the Berlin Welcome Card is made for travelers who don’t want to miss out on anything.

This pass provides discounts for 48 different museums, 26 attractions, and at least 44 interesting tours in Berlin.

The Welcome Card offers various options in terms of duration and tariff zone.

Travelers can choose either Berlin city centre (tariff zone AB) or Berlin and surrounding areas (tariff zone ABC).

Berlin Welcome Card Benefits

You could also print the voucher at home and obtain the transport tickets and discount pass at any of a number of tourist offices, including BER Airport and most major train stations.

It also comes with a handy guide to the city and the pass's benefits that can fit in your pocket.

This card is well-reviewed. Read some of the reviews .

While the discounts they offer aren't necessarily as good as their competitors, it's easy to see how you could easily save quite a bit of money using this pass.

Berlin Travel Pass

Each of these discount passes includes a ticket for public transportation throughout Berlin.

The lower-priced options include an AB Zone ticket while the higher-priced passes have an ABC Zone ticket.

No matter which transit pass you choose to purchase, it is important to understand some basic details about these public transport tickets.

Be sure to read our guide on how to use Berlin's mass transportation system .

Useful for Several Services

The transport ticket is valid on all subways (U-Bahn and S-Bahn), suburban trains (RE and RB), buses, night buses, trams, and also for two ferries.

With this card in hand, you shouldn’t have much trouble getting around the city of Berlin.

AB or ABC Tariff Zones

It’s important to understand the difference between the AB and ABC Fare Zones.

While the AB Zone pass will provide transportation within the inner city, the ABC Zone is useful for traveling around the suburbs of Berlin as well.

This might come in handy if you intend to visit any locations on the outskirts of Berlin, such as Potsdam or Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp , or if you plan to use the BER Airport.

However, a single-ride addon ticket for Zone C costs only €1.80 per ride.

Berlin Walking Tours

Kids Ride for Free

With each of these discount passes, an unlimited number of children up to the age of 6 can travel for free.

They also allow up to 3 kids between the ages of 6-14 for free with each pass.

Luggage Is Also Free

Visitors are welcome to bring one piece of luggage or one bag per person on public transport.

Certain Items Might Cost Extra

If you have a bicycle or similarly sized item, you may be asked to pay extra as these types of items are not included with the pass.

That being said, both the Berlin Welcome Card and the Easy City Pass will allow you to bring a dog on board.

Transport Ticket Must Be Validated

Before you can use your AB/ABC Zone ticket, it must be validated by stamping it once.

You will find machines to validate your ticket near most metro stations and other areas where you can find public transport.

You only need to stamp your ticket once – if you stamp it again, it will be void.

ALL-INCLUSIVE PASSES

All-inclusive passes are the most expensive option, but they also offer the widest range of activities and the most potential for savings.

If you have the time and the desire to experience a bunch of different museums, tours, and other attractions, this is likely going to be one of your best options.

Rather than worrying about which sites you can visit, these all-inclusive passes will allow you to explore dozens of notable locations at your leisure.

Berlin Pass or Berlin Welcome Card

There are two All-Inclusive passes offered in Berlin: The Go City Berlin Pass and the Welcome Card All-Inclusive .

Although both services provide access to a lot of entertaining activities, you will notice a few differences between each tourist pass.

Specifically, there are some attractions that are offered on one pass, but not the other.

Bearing that in mind, we’ll do our best to highlight in red tours and attractions that are exclusive to either card.

The Welcome Card All-Inclusive

Although this card doesn’t provide as much variety, the Welcome Card All-Inclusive does provide admission to some museums and historic sites that aren’t offered by the Berlin Pass (see below).

You can also get this pass from 2 up to 6 days as opposed to the 3-day option above.

Overall, this pass is less expensive, so depending on what you want to see, this card might make more sense for you.

What they lack in variety, they make up for in overall value.

Free admission to 19 museums including:

  • German Spy Museum*
  • Jewish Museum of Berlin
  • The Story of Berlin Museum*
  • The Wall Museum*

Free admission to several attractions including:

  • Berlin Television Tower*
  • Olympiastadion Visitor Center

Free admission to many tours including:

  • Hop-on, Hop-off Bus Tour
  • Berlin Walking Tour
  • Berlin Bike Tour
  • A River Cruise
  • Free use of public transport*

See their full list of attractions and tours here.

All-Inclusive Welcome Card Prices

  • Price per day: €44.50/Adults | €29.50/Children

Berlin City Card

visit berlin museum pass

Not to be confused with the Berlin Pass, the Berlin City Card is a bare-bones discount card that includes a few items, but ones that you are likely to visit.

By bundling these items into a pass, you will save some money and you also get 10% discounts on many other attractions.

This pass is best for people who are planning to visit a few attractions and like the convenience of having your tickets before you even arrive in Berlin.

The pass includes

  • Skip-the-line entrance to the TV Tower w/ an amazing view of Berlin.
  • Skip-the-line entrance to the Pergamon Museum .
  • Skip-the-line entrance to the DDR Museum .
  • Berlin City Audio Guide for Smartphones.
  • 10% discount on additional activities.
  • Adult (18+) €59
  • Youth (15-17) €29
  • Child (6-14) €20
  • Child (4-5) €19
  • Purchase the Berlin City Card .

How it works:

When you know the dates of your trip and are ready to purchase your City Pass, click here . You will be asked to enter your arrival date and airport.

Once you complete your purchase, you will receive an email asking you to choose the dates/times for your free visits to the Reichstag and the TV Tower.

Once you have completed this entire process, you will get an email including all tickets.

Lastly, you will receive a discount code to get a 10% discount on tickets for other top museums and attractions.

Discover Berlin Pass

This is another prepackaged pass which includes a few of the more popular attractions and activities you can enjoy in Berlin.

One of the nicest things about this service is that you can actually schedule each individual ticket for different dates, giving you plenty of time to enjoy each location.

If you're already planning to visit each of the included attractions, this is a quick and easy way to purchase tickets ahead of time and save at least 10% off general admission prices.

What is Included?

  • Panoramapunkt
  • Berlin TV Tower
  • Cold War Museum
  • Discover Berlin Walking Tour

Unlike other prepackaged passes, this one does not include an additional 10% off other activities.

  • €62.50/Adults (26+)
  • €59/Youth (15-25)
  • €48/Student (15-25)
  • €47/Children (11-14)
  • €33/Children (7-10)
  • €16/Children (4-6)

Purchase the Berlin Discover Pass or learn more .

Things to Consider

As you can see, this pass includes two of the main observation decks in Berlin. While the view from each deck is obviously different, most travelers aren't going to be interested in the same activity twice.

There's also a walking tour included, and we offer several free Berlin walking tours that are an excellent alternative.

Historical Pass Berlin

If you're interested in experiencing the history of Berlin, this pass includes several attractions you might want to visit.

Like other passes from Tiqets, you can pick different dates and times for each ticket, allowing you to take your time and explore the city at your own leisure.

Of course, if you're already planning to visit these locations, this could be an easy way to purchase admission ahead of time and save between 5% - 10% on your tickets!

  • TimeRide Berlin
  • Asisi Panorama - Die Mauer (The Wall)

Unfortunately, this pass does not include 10% off additional activities.

  • €63/Adults (17+)
  • €59/Students (17-26)
  • €57/Youth (15-16)
  • €32/Children (6-14)
  • €17/Children (4-5)

Purchase the Historical Pass Berlin or learn more .

This pass includes a nice variety of activities, including TimeRide, which isn't provided by many other services on our list.

That said, while the Cold War Museum and The Wall exhibit are both related to the history of Berlin, those are really the only two historical attractions on the pass.

Perhaps it needs a different name, but it's definitely worth considering if you want to save money at any of these locations.

Alexanderplatz Pass

If you're planning to visit Alexanderplatz, this pass will cover the cost of a few popular activities in the area.

Each ticket included can be scheduled for specific dates and times, allowing you to plan out your trip ahead of time while you save a bit of money.

Considering most tourists will visit this major plaza in the city centre, chances are this discount pass will come in handy for some travelers.

  • BODY WORLDS Berlin
  • City Sightseeing Hop-on Hop-off Tour

This pass does not include an extra 10% off other activities.

  • €62/Adults (18+)
  • €61/Senior (65+)
  • €59/Youth (15-17)
  • €40/Children (4-14)

Purchase the Alexanderplatz Pass or learn more .

The City Sightseeing Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour makes a stop at Alexanderplatz, so you can actually use that service from this plaza.

While they could certainly add more to this pass, it's a pretty good way to secure tickets for some of the more popular sites in the area.

The Berlin Wall Pass

For many travelers, the Berlin Wall is an absolute must-see attraction, and this is a great way to experience the historic site and learn all about the story of the structure.

In addition to multiple tours of the wall, you'll also have access to a few of the more popular sites related to this historic site.

  • East Side Gallery Audio Tour
  • Explore Berlin Walking Tour

Unfortunately, this pass does not offer an additional 10% off other activities.

  • €41/Adults (17+)
  • €39/Seniors (65+)
  • €33/Student (ID required)
  • €24/Youth (13-16)
  • €14/Children (6-12)
  • Children under 5 are free

Purchase the Berlin Wall Pass or learn more .

While the included tours are undoubtedly great introductions to the subject of the Berlin Wall, we offer our own free Cold War walking tours which provide a lot of useful details about this landmark.

That said, if you're looking for a quick and easy way to take care of everything all at once, this pass is still an excellent option.

Combo Packages and Deals

In addition to all the tourist passes listed above, there are also a variety of combo deals you can use to save money on a variety of fun activities and attractions in Berlin.

These combination packages are an excellent alternative to tourist passes if you're only planning to enjoy a few tours, museums, or other services.

Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour + Berlin Dungeon

  • €52/Adults | €35.50/Children
  • Purchase tickets or learn more .

Tips From Locals and Travelers

While we do our best to provide the most unbiased reviews of discount passes, the best way to make sure you're getting the truth is to check and see what actual locals and travelers have to say about these services.

One of the best places to find this kind of information is on Facebook groups such as Berlin Travel Tips .

A lot of people who have either lived in the area or travel there frequently will share their own thoughts on various tourist pass options.

Here are a few of the best tips we could find.

visit berlin museum pass

When it comes to the Welcome Card, it seems that most people are split on whether or not it's worth the money.

One thing most travelers agree on is that it's good if you plan to visit a lot of the included attractions, but if you're not interested in a majority of included activities, it might not be worth it.

Some commenters suggest buying a travel pass instead, because it's definitely a good way to get around the city with ease.

visit berlin museum pass

That said, some travelers feel that the Berlin Welcome Card isn't worth the cost, and they note that you can often save more money through other methods.

This is certainly true, because most museums offer discounted rates to students and young adults, so you might actually save more just by getting a different kind of ticket!

visit berlin museum pass

As John notes about the Museum Pass, most museums will give you the student discount if you have a student ID from other parts of the world.

This is a valuable tip, because most museums around the world only offer student discounts to local students, but that doesn't seem to be the case in Berlin.

visit berlin museum pass

Even so, as Anieze suggests, you should probably check with each museum before heading out.

How to use Germany’s €49 rail pass to travel beyond Euro 2024’s host cities

Use the unlimited ticket to see lesser-known highlights in, and around, the country.

euro 2024 rail travel rail pass 49 euros germany austria the netherlands

For four weeks from 14 June, Germany will hope to relive its 2006 Sommermaerchen (Summer Fairytale) when, as host, they finished in third place at the World Cup.

The country will become one huge festival parade ground and everyone is invited. Whether you have tickets to Euro 2024 , or are simply visiting during the tournament, you can expect a party atmosphere with cafés, restaurants and beer gardens putting up screens to show the game. From the Brandenburger Tor in Berlin to Olympiapark in Munich , there will be zones for fans to catch the game with a heavy chance of beer showers.

The sleeper train on which you wake up to breakfast tacos - and Texas

With the action spread across 10 German host cities, it is also the perfect chance to enjoy Germany’s culture, natural landscapes and food. There is something for everyone. The capital, Berlin, has a dark but interesting history, world-class museums and incredible nightlife. Hamburg offers musical heritage and harbourside architecture. Or, in the east, Leipzig is the most alternative cultural city in Germany.

With a greater frequency of trains, dedicated routes to the stadiums (for nine out of 10 host cities) and services running later into the evening, taking the train will be the best way to travel during Euro 2024. Ticket holders will be given a free 36-hour travel pass, valid on matchday and the day after to travel within the city and on slower services within the region.

However, the Deutschland-Ticket will give fans unlimited access to all regional public transport in Germany on RB, RE and S-Bahn trains (SPNV) for one month – ideal for those who want to spend longer and see more of the country.

Priced at €49 a month, the ticket offers use of all forms of regional transport and that includes trains, buses, trams, underground routes, and ferries. However, it does not include the faster, long-distance trains such as ICE, Intercity, FlixTrain and Eurocity or night trains.

You can buy the Deutschland Ticket online via the  Deutsche Bahn website . It is worth remembering that the Deutschland-Ticket is a subscription that will automatically renew at the end of each month.

Whether you purchase it on the 1 June or 14 June , it will be only valid till the end of June. It still works out as a good deal, even if you are travelling across Germany for a fortnight. Remember, you have to cancel on the 10 of the previous month, otherwise it renews for the next month.

It’s also possible to use the Deutschland ticket to travel between some of the host cities on regional trains, for example between Dortmund and Gelsenkirchen, or Cologne and Dusseldorf (though make sure you are using regional rather than high-speed trains). But it’s also worth using it to explore before or after match days. Here are 10 highlights worth detouring for with the Deutschland ticket.

Salzburg : two hours from Munich

Telescope overlooking the Old Town of Salzburg from M??nchsberg mountain - Salzburg, Austria

Just two hours away from Munich on the Bavarian RE5 is Austria’s fairy-tale city. Salzburg’s most recognisable view is that of the city’s buildings spread into the distance, with the Salzach river below, and the Hohensalzburg fortress perched on a hilltop. Visit the Salzburg Cathedral, the home of Mozart, walk along the winding streets and stumble upon innumerable picturesque city squares.

Hop on the Bavarian Regiobahn (BRB) RE5 train from Munich to Salzburg. The journey time is two hours.

Nuremberg : three hours from Stuttgart

Nuremberg is attractive anytime of the year, but it particularly shines with the buzz and excitement of the Christmas markets. It is one of Germany’s most underrated cities, with so much to enjoy – the architecture, museums, craft beer, waist-expanding gastronomic delights and friendly residents.

Take the MEX 13 regional train from Stuttgart and change in Crailsheim for the RE90 train to Nuremberg. The journey time is three hours.

Essen: 10 minutes from Gelsenkirchen

Essen is located in the heartland of the Ruhr region of Germany. Visit for its coal mine, the Zeche Zollverein, which was once regarded as the world’s largest. Now it is a Unesco site and home to the Ruhr museum. The museum has 6,000 permanent exhibits, showcasing how the use of coal changed over time.

Take the RE2, RE42 or the S2 train from Gelsenkirchen. Journey time is just 10 minutes .

Bochum: 11 minutes from Dortmund

Bochum in the Ruhr area Panorama with winding tower from the Mining Museum

Bochum’s beauty lies in its understated charm. This former industrial mining town is undergoing some major changes, but even in the current state of flux, visitors will find a city packed with culture, green spaces and hip hotspots such as the neighbourhood of Ehrenfeld – and Bermuda3Eck, quite possibly the Ruhr area’s leading nightlife hotspot. For football fans, Bochum is one of the few Bundesliga stadiums where you can get close to the action and feel the spirit of football.

Take the RE1 or RE6 train from Dortmund to Bochum. The journey time is around 11 minutes.

Halle Saale : 22 minutes from Leipzig

Halle is the German city that will surprise visitors. It has an appealing blend of history, music, culture and natural beauty – and it is home to the world’s largest Beatles museum. The historic centre of Halle is impressive, with the Gothic Marktkirche dominating the skyline.

With a 15.9 per cent concentration of green spaces, parks and sports areas, Halle is also one of Germany’s greenest cities. Soak up nature with a gentle stroll along the Saale river followed by a visit to the Botanischer Garten with its range of plant species and landscapes.

Take the local S5x (22 minutes ) or S3 (37 minutes ) from Leipzig to Halle (Saale) Hauptbahnhof .

Bremen: 1 hour 9 minutes from Hamburg

View to boardwalk Schlachte, Saint Martin's Church and Martini landing pier in Bremen, Germany

By the banks of the Weser, the Hanseatic city of Bremen is another lesser-visited highlight of Germany. Here, world-class museums stand cheek to cheek with picture postcard neighbourhoods, restaurants showcasing local and international cuisine and nightlife hubs. Bremen is “schon klein” – a compact place to cover by foot.

The Schlachte, Bremen’s 600-year-old harbour, is the place where residents come for long walks up the promenade, ride their bikes or go for a drink in the sun. The Market Square of Bremen is the place to catch up on a great number of stories and legends. Here you will see the instantly recognisable musicians of Bremen captured for all eternity in the form of a bronze statue. The Roland statue found in most German cities, a symbol of market rights and freedom, is the biggest in Germany and is Unesco protected.

The RE4 or RB41 run every hour from Hamburg to Bremen, with journey times varying from one hour nine minutes (RE 9) to one hour 30 minutes (RB41)

Lübbenau: 1 hour 9 minutes from Berlin

A Unesco biosphere reserve of 400km natural and man-made waterways, Spreewald is the perfect escape from Berlin. Just over an hour by train from the capital, the lush forests and waterways feel like a world away. Lübbenau, on the outskirts of the reserve, makes for a pretty unique day out. From this “city of cucumbers” – they have been grown and pickled here since the 8th century – visitors can set off to explore Spreewald either by wooden boats with their lovingly laid tables (Spreewald’s answer to Venice’s iconic gondolas) or by canoe.

From Berlin Hauptbahnhof, it takes one hour, nine minutes, direct on the RE2 or RE7.

Mainz : 1 hour 23 minutes from Cologne

Mainzer Dom St. Martin und Heunens?ule am Markt, Mainz, Rheinland-Pfalz, Deutschland

Mainz is a picturesque university town located on the Rhine. Mostly known as the birthplace of Johannes Gutenberg (of Gutenberg Bible fame) and the host of stupendous carnival celebrations, Mainz is also a centre for wine making in the Rhineland. Be sure to visit the Romanesque Mainz Cathedral. Kirschgarten Square, with its timbered buildings, ornate fountains, restaurants, cafés and boutiques, is the place to enjoy the hustle and bustle of the old town. The Gutenberg Museum has a Gutenberg Bible on show.

T ake the t rain RB26 (MittelrheinBahn) from Cologne to Mainz.

Heidelberg : 1 hour 36 minutes from Frankfurt

The science city of Germany, Heidelberg is where the country’s intellectual glitterati reside. It has the oldest university in Germany and many research institutes and companies. But there’s a romantic side, too, found by visiting the Baroque Old Town, the Philosopher’s Walk and Heidelberg Castle. The Old Town is spread out across a long, narrow stretch that falls parallel to the Neckar River. Heidelberg Castle, which has a Gothic-Renaissance appeal, stands on the crags of Königstuhl hill, commanding a bird’s eye view of the surroundings.

The RE68 whisks you to Heidelberg from Frankfurt in just one hour, 36 minutes .

Venlo : 1 hour 4 minutes from Dusseldorf

Venlo is a small sleepy town on the German-Dutch border. But, for all its sleepiness, it played an important part in espionage activities during the Second World War. Two British Intelligence officers were arrested here in what came to be known as the “Venlo Incident” and which was later used as justification for the Nazis to invade neutral Netherlands.

These days, expect a laid back and pleasant day trip, enjoying Venlo’s cafés and restaurants, markets and friendly people in this pretty little city on the Meuse River.

With the RE13, hop across the border from Dusseldorf to Venlo in just 64 minutes .
