Return Journey :  If your delay results in you needing to return to your originally scheduled return destination, we can cover the cost of a one-way Economy Fare.

Trip Delay, Trip Interruption and Trip Cancellation Insurance Explained

“We’re sorry, but … ” the gate agent begins to say. That’s when you know your trip isn’t going to proceed quite according to plan.

Every traveler has experienced some kind of hiccup in their travel plans: a short wait, a lengthy delay or even an emergency cancellation. That’s why travel insurance is so important: A good plan can reimburse you for an airport lunch or cover the thousands in prepaid trip expenses you lost because of a trip cancellation.

Several travel insurance plans from Allianz Global Assistance include benefits for trip delays, trip interruptions and trip cancellations. Here’s how they protect you.

What does trip delay insurance cover?

A travel delay benefit exists to help you get through short(ish), unexpected pauses in your travel plans. It can reimburse you for lost prepaid expenses, as well as costs you incur because of the delay, including meals, accommodations, communication and transportation.

Note that for such an event to be considered a delay, it must last for the minimum time stated in your plan, for example, six hours. Also, the delay needs to be for a covered reason, as listed in your plan, such as a travel carrier delay or because you lost or had your travel documents stolen.

How does trip delay insurance work in real life? Let’s say your 6 p.m. flight to Orlando is grounded due to mechanical issues, and the next available flight doesn’t leave until 9 a.m. the next morning. Here’s what trip delay insurance may cover:

  • Your dinner and breakfast the next day
  • Your hotel room for the night
  • Your cab ride to the hotel from the airport and back
  • The cost of the hotel room you had booked for your first night in Orlando (if the hotel won’t refund your money)

There are limits, of course: Travel delay benefits reimburse reasonable expenses, up to the limit shown on your letter of confirmation, for example, $150/day. Don’t expect your travel insurance to pay for a lavish sushi dinner and a stay at The Ritz-Carlton.

But wait: Why do you even need travel insurance for this scenario? Aren’t airlines supposed to pay for your hotel room and meals if your flight is delayed? Not necessarily. For a routine flight cancellation in the United States, you generally have two basic contractual rights, as USA Today explains : “either one, a seat on your original airline’s next available flight, or two, a refund of the unused portion of your ticket.”

Some airlines do say in their contracts that if your flight is canceled or delayed due to a reason within their control — such as a crew shortage — they may give passengers meal vouchers or hotel accommodations. But these policies vary by airline and situation and don’t offer the same coverage as travel delay insurance.

What does trip interruption insurance cover?

A trip interruption occurs when a traveler must unexpectedly cut a trip short and return home. Additionally, an interruption can cause you to stay at your destination longer than originally planned (not always a bad thing, right?). Trip interruption insurance can refund lost prepaid costs, minus any available refunds and up to the maximum benefit amount, and cover the cost of your extra accommodations and/or your trip home (depending on which plan you choose ).

Trip interruption insurance only applies if the interruption is caused by a covered reason. Allianz Global Assistance lists more than 20 covered reasons for interrupting or canceling your trip. Some common covered reasons include the serious covered illness or injury of the traveler, traveling companion or a family member; a natural disaster that renders your home or your destination uninhabitable; and the cessation of services by your airline, cruise line or other carrier, causing you to miss more than half of your trip.

Trip interruption insurance is essential for those travel emergencies you just can’t predict.

Imagine you’re in the middle of a weeklong safari in the Serengeti when you receive word that your parent is gravely ill with pneumonia and you need to return home. With the help of the travel experts on the Allianz emergency hotline team, you can get on the first available flight out of Kilimanjaro Airport and travel back to the U.S. Trip interruption insurance can help cover the cost of the flight and reimburse you for the unused portion of your safari.

One key condition to keep in mind with trip interruption is that in order to take full advantage of the benefit, you need to inform all your travel suppliers (hotels, tour operators, etc.) within 72 hours of finding out your trip will be interrupted. So in the heat of the moment, be sure to keep your cool and communicate your change of plans as needed.

What does trip cancellation insurance cover?

Trip cancellation insurance covers situations when you must cancel your trip before you leave for a covered reason (generally the same covered reasons that apply to trip interruption coverage).

Trip cancellation coverage can refund the prepaid, nonrefundable costs of your trip, such as airfare, cruise tickets, tour bookings and hotel reservations. Plus, if you prepaid for shared accommodations and your travel companion needs to cancel their trip for a covered reason, you can be reimbursed additional accommodation fees, which is huge if you’re taking a cruise.

Similar to trip interruption, the 72-hour notification rule applies here, as well. So be sure to let your airline, tour operator, cruise line and others know about the trip cancellation in a timely fashion.

What Else You Should Know When Your Trip Doesn’t Go as Planned

It’s possible for a trip delay to turn into a trip interruption if you’ve lost more than half the total length of your scheduled trip length due to a covered travel delay.

Let’s say you’re about to leave for a five-day Caribbean cruise, but a blizzard grounds your Miami-bound plane for two days. By the time you get to Florida, your ship is long gone, and you can’t find a flight to its next port of call. You may be able to make a trip interruption claim.

Just remember that when your trip is delayed or interrupted, you need to do everything you can to continue your scheduled plans. Try to catch up with your cruise ship or tour group (our hotline staff can help). Document your efforts. Keep your receipts. And as we’ve mentioned, notify all your travel providers and your insurer as soon as possible once you cancel your trip. Here are some tips on how to use your trip delay benefit — and how you know it’s time to cancel the trip.

Always read your plan documents carefully so you understand your coverage, and call Allianz Global Assistance if you have any questions.

Trip Interruption Coverage Versus Travel Delay

Trip Interruption and Travel Delay coverages are different components of travel insurance that serve different purposes. Trip Interruption coverage deals with unexpected events that interrupt your trip, forcing you to return home early or rejoin your trip in progress, such as illness, injury, natural disasters or the death of a family member.

Travel Delay coverage may provide coverage when you encounter flight or other travel-related delays. It can help reimburse expenses incurred during the delay, as explained under "reasonable expenses."

How to Make a Claim, and What Information Is Required?

It’s never fun to experience a hiccup in your travel plans, whether it be a delayed flight causing you to arrive at your destination later than expected or a family member back home falling ill and leading to a premature ending to your trip.

These situations aren’t predictable, but they do happen. In 2023, around 20% of flights in the U.S. were delayed, and just over 1% were canceled, according to data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. ¹ Since you can never be certain if or when you’ll encounter a delay or interruption to your trip, having insurance that covers these types of situations can provide peace of mind . But are trip delay and trip interruption coverage really worth it?

Let’s take a closer look at each of these types of coverage so you can decide whether they’re necessary for your next trip.

Trip delay insurance and trip interruption insurance are 2 different products .

Basically, trip delay insurance provides coverage when travel booked on a common carrier — think airline, bus, train, or passenger boat tickets — is delayed for a period of time. Trip delay insurance covers reasonable expenses (up to the daily dollar limit as specified by your plan) incurred once your trip is delayed by a certain number of hours (also specified by your plan).

On the other hand, trip interruption insurance covers you if something happens that forces you to cancel the remainder of your plans.

Trip delay insurance is typically considered to be supplemental coverage as it only pays in excess of any reimbursement you’ve received elsewhere , like from an airline or from another insurance policy. With this insurance, you can be reimbursed for reasonable expenses that you have to pay for as a result of the delay, such as meals, a hotel stay, transportation, and lost prepaid expenses.

Say, for example, an airline cancels your flight but then rebooks you on a different flight for the next day and provides you with a hotel stay and meal vouchers. Your trip is delayed, yes, but since the airline paid for the necessary expenses to get you through the delay, you cannot also submit a claim to your travel insurance provider for additional accommodations and meal reimbursements.

With trip interruption insurance, you can be reimbursed for unused prepaid nonrefundable expenses and for transportation back home or to your next destination . Examples of reasons your trip might be interrupted include a family emergency, a natural disaster, or either you or a travel companion experiencing an illness or injury.

Keep in mind that many policies have exclusions , and not every reason for interrupting your trip will qualify for coverage. This includes reasons such as childbirth, illegal acts, and drug use. Some policies may also exclude preexisting conditions.

Be sure to keep track of any expenditures and receipts during your delayed or interrupted trip. You may need to submit them in order to be reimbursed by your insurer.

Trip delay and trip interruption insurance are usually packaged with other types of travel coverage , including trip cancellation, baggage loss, medical emergency, and evacuation insurance. A comprehensive travel insurance policy that you can purchase from a third-party provider typically includes both trip delay and trip interruption coverage, but you’ll want to review any policy you’re considering to be certain.

Third-party travel insurance providers include Allianz Travel Insurance , Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance , and World Nomads Travel Insurance . Using a site such as Squaremouth is an easy way to compare policies and pricing across multiple travel insurance providers.

Many popular travel credit cards include trip delay and trip interruption insurance as perks . Coverage varies by card but usually kicks in after a delay of 6 to 12 hours. However, if you need more coverage than your credit card benefits offer or you need Cancel for Any Reason travel insurance, you should look into buying a separate travel policy with inclusions for trip delay and trip interruption insurance.

You’re Traveling Within the U.S.

The average American takes 2 or 3 vacations each year , with most travelers remaining within the U.S., as domestic leisure travelers made up the majority of direct travel spending in 2022.

Travel within the U.S. is often a lot less expensive than international travel . With the national average domestic airfare in the third quarter of 2023 being around $368, you may not have a huge amount of money on the line if your trip gets delayed or goes awry while in progress.

And if you’ve booked a hotel with a free cancellation policy, you also don’t have money at risk of loss if you cancel before the deadline specified by your reservation. Depending on the situation, some hotels may allow you to cancel or rebook for a different date for no fee, even beyond the cancellation deadline.

Your Trip Only Includes Air Travel

American Airlines at HNL Airport

As a passenger, knowing your rights when you experience delayed or canceled flights can help ensure you’re rebooked and/or compensated as per the airline’s policy, which, in many cases, can negate the need for trip delay insurance.

For example, all of the major U.S. domestic airlines will rebook you on the same airline at no additional cost for a controllable delay or cancellation (a “controllable” delay or cancellation is one that is caused by the airline, such as maintenance or crew problems). Some airlines will also rebook you on a different airline at no additional cost, but a few do not.

You also have the right to a refund if you decide not to travel because of a canceled flight or a significant delay/schedule change.

Should your travel plans be interrupted and you need to stay at your destination longer or for an unknown amount of time, often you can cancel the unused portion of your airline ticket and receive travel credit to be used in the future (though basic economy fares are typically excluded from these situations).

You Booked With Points and Miles

You may not be able to use trip delay or trip cancellation coverage from a general travel insurance policy to recover the value of points and miles that you redeemed for travel. However, many airline and hotel programs have generous change and cancellation policies for award travel where you can change your travel dates or receive a refund for the points or miles used and taxes paid, either for free or for a low fee.

Booking through a bank’s travel portal — such as Chase Travel or AmexTravel.com — with flexible points can qualify you for trip delay and trip interruption reimbursement through the associated credit card , so you would not need separate coverage in this instance.

If you need to advance your return date and head home sooner, many airlines now allow changes for no additional fee , though you will have to pay any difference in fare (again, basic economy tickets are typically excluded from this policy). Sometimes the fare difference can be significant, so you may want to weigh the cost of paying a potential fare difference versus purchasing a travel insurance policy with trip interruption coverage.

You Don’t Have a Lot of Prepaid Expenses

If you don’t have many prepaid or nonrefundable expenses, your losses from a delayed or interrupted trip could be minimal . For a delayed flight, there may be many other flight options that would get you to your destination at a reasonable time. For a trip in progress that’s interrupted, you may be able to use points or miles for a last-minute flight to get back home quickly. In these instances, you’re basically “self-insuring” because you don’t have much money at risk.

You’re an Employee Taking a Business Trip

An as employee traveling for work, you may have trip delay and trip interruption coverage through your employer’s business travel insurance policy. However, it’s best to check with your employer to be certain rather than assume you are covered.

Should you decide to extend your business trip for personal reasons, like visiting family or enjoying leisure activities either before or after the work portion is completed, it could be a good idea to have separate, personal coverage.

If you’re self-employed, you may want to purchase a comprehensive business travel insurance policy — not just to cover unexpected delays or interruptions — but also because it may have higher limits for expensive business equipment you may be traveling with compared to personal travel insurance policies.

Your Credit Card Offers It

You may not have been thinking about travel insurance when you signed up for a new credit card with a big welcome offer , however, many midtier and premium travel cards do include it as a perk.

For example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card has a trip delay benefit of up to $500 for each ticket purchased when you are delayed due to a covered hazard for more than 12 hours or require an overnight stay. The benefit includes reimbursement for reasonable additional expenses incurred during your delay, including meals, lodging, toiletries, and medication.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card also has a trip interruption benefit of up to $10,000 per person and up to $20,000 per trip, if your trip is cut short for a covered reason.

Check out our article on the best credit cards for travel insurance coverage to compare benefits by card.

If you have extensive prepaid or nonrefundable expenses, you should definitely take a close look at trip delay and trip interruption insurance, and make sure the policy you select has sufficient coverage .

Say you’ve spent $10,000 for a cruise or $15,000 for a safari, and you’re delayed or need to leave early — you’d potentially be forfeiting a big sum of money . If that’s more money than you’re willing to lose, you shouldn’t “self-insure” in that scenario by not having coverage.

Other situations where you may especially want to have trip delay and trip interruption insurance would be if you’re traveling internationally , are concerned about the weather impacting your trip , or you have a family back home you may need to get back to on short notice.

With international travel, typically trips are longer in duration compared to domestic travel, and you may have spent a significant amount on flights, hotels, and other nonrefundable expenses. And with weather issues, many airline policies exclude providing compensation, like a hotel room or meal vouchers, because they consider it an uncontrollable delay, so having separate coverage means you’ll be reimbursed for those expenses.

The decision to have trip delay and trip interruption insurance depends on each individual’s situation and should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Some primary considerations include whether your travels are domestic or international, whether you already have coverage from your credit card, and how much you have spent on prepaid or nonrefundable expenses.

It may be surprising to hear that you might not need trip delay and trip interruption insurance for every type of trip. While there are times when having them may be helpful or even essential, they’re not always necessary. Plus, you may already have a credit card that covers you as long as you use it to pay for at least a portion of your travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cancel for any reason insurance (also called CFAR coverage) is a type of trip cancellation insurance that lets you cancel your trip for a reason not listed as a covered reason in your plan. For example, you may decide not to travel due to an illness in your extended family or a specific financial issue you're dealing with. In either case, this time-sensitive coverage can help you get reimbursement for prepaid trip payments you have made toward airfare, hotel stays, tours and more.

CFAR coverage typically needs to be purchased within a sensitive period of time after making a trip deposit (usually ranging from 14 to 20 days after). Travelers only get back between 50% and 80% of prepaid travel expenses, depending on your policy, so this coverage won't lead to a full refund.

If you're worried how COVID-19 might affect your travel plans, you can purchase travel insurance that includes COVID-19 coverage . That said, CFAR protection can also be a good investment, particularly if you want the option to cancel based on last-minute disinclination to travel due to the coronavirus pandemic.

What does AmEx trip delay insurance cover?

Which amex cards include trip delay insurance, who is covered by amex trip delay insurance, how to file a claim, trip delay insurance from amex recapped.

American Express only relatively recently added trip delay insurance protection to eligible cards. Before 2020, travelers might have had to make a choice between using a credit card with trip delay protections or an AmEx card that earned more points. But now, the issuer has added trip delay insurance as a benefit to some of its cards, making it a lot easier for travelers to decide to reach for their AmEx card when booking a flight.

However, this protection isn't available on all cards, and it doesn't cover all delays or travelers. Here's what you need to know about AmEx trip delay insurance.

AmEx trip delay insurance reimburses reasonable expenses, such as meals and lodging, incurred when a trip is delayed due to a covered reason. Depending on which AmEx card you carry, the maximum reimbursement is up to $500 per eligible trip and the delay must be at least six or 12 hours.

To qualify, you must use your eligible American Express card to pay for round-trip travel starting from your city of residence. Although AmEx requires "round-trip travel," you may book one-way flights and visit one or more destinations, so long as the trip ends at your home. However, you'll need to charge the entire trip to your eligible card and keep the trip length under 365 days.

Not all delays qualify. AmEx trip delay insurance only kicks in when you're delayed due to one of four reasons:

Inclement weather.

Terrorist action or hijacking.

Equipment failure by the common carrier (e.g. airline or train company).

Lost or stolen passports or travel documents.

AmEx trip delay insurance also doesn't cover delays that are made known before your trip starts — such as a flight schedule change communicated in advance. Also, it won't cover expenses paid before the trip or delays due to intentional acts by the traveler.

AmEx trip delay insurance doesn't just cover the cardmember who used an eligible card to pay for the trip. AmEx coverage is extended to the cardmember's spouse or domestic partner, qualifying children and traveling companions.

AmEx defines children as those that are unmarried, dependent and younger than 19 — or under 26 and a full-time student at an accredited college or university.

Interestingly, a "traveling companion" only needs to make advanced arrangements to travel with you (or your eligible family members) on all or part of your eligible trip. That means a travel companion that travels with you on just one flight would be covered if that flight is delayed.

AmEx trip delay coverage is capped per trip — not per eligible traveler or per delay. That means you'll receive a maximum of $500 in reimbursements no matter how many eligible travelers are in your group and no matter how many delays you have on a single trip.

» Learn more: How to choose a travel credit card

When you experience a delay, the most important thing to remember is to document everything. Save all receipts, ask your carrier for a statement with the reason for the delay and keep a copy of your ticket.

Then, you'll need to go through a two-step process to file a claim for reimbursement. First, you must notify the benefit administrator of your claim within 60 days of the trip delay. You can do this by calling 844-933-0648 to begin the claims process.

Next, you'll be asked to provide proof of your loss. The benefit administrator will provide instructions on what's required when you open your claim. You may need to provide documentation like receipts, tickets and the reason for the delay. This proof must generally be filed within 180 days of your delay, although AmEx may provide an extension of up to one year.

» Learn more: How do travel insurance claims work?

AmEx trip delay insurance was only recently added to certain American Express cards. This addition makes these cards more appealing to use when booking travel. Now, cardmembers can use AmEx cards to book travel knowing that they're covered in case there's a delay due to weather, equipment failure or if their travel documents are lost or stolen.

Just keep in mind that you'll need to use an eligible card to book all travel, not all delays are covered and the reimbursements are capped per trip — not per traveler or per delay.

Amid threat of Air Canada pilots strike, what should you do if your flight gets cancelled?

Thousands of passengers could be stranded as early as Sunday if Air Canada doesn't reach a deal with its pilots' union.

Without a deal by Sept. 15, the airline could issue a 72-hour lockout notice, while the union may issue notice of a strike, triggering the carrier's three-day shutdown of Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge operations, according to Air Canada in a press release Monday.

Air Canada said Monday that it's finalizing contingency plans to suspend most of its operations as both parties remain far apart in talks. It projects that the three-day suspension could affect 110,000 passengers daily. Flights are operating as scheduled as negotiations continue with the Air Line Pilots Association.

"Flight delays and cancellations resulting from labour disruptions, should they occur, are unlikely to occur before mid-September," the airline wrote on its website. "If your flight is cancelled by Air Canada, you will then be eligible for a full refund regardless of your fare type; furthermore, no cancellation fees will apply."

Air Canada said it is working with other airlines to potentially accommodate stranded passengers if flights are cancelled. It said flights under the Air Canada Express carriers Jazz and PAL Airlines won't be affected by a potential strike as they are operated by third-party carriers.

The Air Line Pilots Association is pushing for unprecedented wage hikes to close the salary gap with Canadian pilots' higher-earning U.S. peers.

Here's what you can do if no settlement is reached, and labour disruptions affect your flight.

New rebooking policy

Air Canada said it has implemented a new policy that allows eligible travellers to change their flight for free to another date. You must have purchased an Air Canada ticket or redeemed points for an Aeroplan flight reward by Sept. 9 for travel between Sept. 15 and 23.

You can also change your flight for free for travel between Sept. 8 and 14 and between Sept. 24 and Nov. 30.

If you don't have access to Air Canada's self-serve options because you bought your ticket with Air Canada Vacations, a travel agent or an online travel agency, you are advised to contact them directly.

If you booked through another airline's website, you should also contact the airline if you want to change flights.

If you booked through Air Canada for Business, you can change your itinerary online. For assistance, call 1-888-335-4189.

If you booked an Air Canada Vacations package, you can visit the goodwill policy page or contact Air Canada Vacations at 1-866-529-2079. The goodwill policy allows free changes to bookings if you purchased a travel package with an Air Canada flight before Sept. 9, 2024, for travel dates between Sept. 15 and 23, 2024. There are no refunds.

The goodwill policy only applies for rebooking on other flights operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge and Air Canada Express (Jazz and PAL Airlines).

You can book alternate dates for flights scheduled between Sept. 9 and 14, 2024, or after Sept. 24, according to Air Canada.

Air Canada Vacations customers have the following options:

  • Shift your travel dates and take a one-time $50 instant credit per passenger. That price is subject to change.
  • Choose a future travel credit for the full amount, which expires in a year.
  • Customers may also request a return travel date change if they're at their destination from Sept. 15 to 23. Flyers won't have to pay change fees, but may have to pay the difference. Extra charges also apply for longer stays at hotels, Air Canada added.

If you booked flights through Aeroplan rewards no later than Aug. 27 for travel between Sept. 15 and 23, you are eligible to change your flight free of charge.

  • The information you need to know, sent directly to you: Download the CTV News App

Cancelling flights

You can cancel tickets and get a full refund if you bought refundable fares, with a potential cancellation fee depending on the type of ticket.

If you bought flights using Aeroplan points, you can cancel your trip without losing your points, which will be redeposited in your account.

If you bought a refundable fare, you can cancel your flight and receive the value of your ticket for use on a future Air Canada booking.

If you choose to keep your current flight and it's affected by the labour stoppage, you will be notified by email or text.

"We will work to support our customers by rebooking them with the best available options, but space will be limited," Air Canada wrote on its website.

Although wait times may be longer than normal, customers can contact Air Canada at anytime at 1-888-247-2262, and 1-800-361-5373 for those travelling on an Aeroplan flight reward.

Further rebooking options and other essential information will be updated on the FAQ section of its website.
