RuPaul’s Drag Race stars sashay their way to Halifax
Violet Chachki and Gottmik’s Drag Extravaganza tour comes to Halifax's Spatz Theatre on September 10.
Two of RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants will stop in Halifax as part of their Drag Extravaganza tour.
You don’t necessarily have to be a Drag Race fan to see something you like at the show. – Queera Bang
Produced by Glitter & Grit Events, the show will feature Violet Chachki, the winner of 2015’s season seven of the popular reality television competition show and Gottmik, the first openly trans man to compete on Drag Race , who came in a shared third/fourth place in 2021’s season thirteen.
The September 10 show will feature local queer artists Elle Noir, Queera Bang, X, Diana B. Tease and DJ Not Applicable.
“What’s interesting about this show is it actually differs from the very formalized drag touring shows we normally see,” says producer Queera Bang, who will also perform in the local show.
“Violet and Gottmik were really looking to do drag shows like they would do in the clubs. They didn’t want a refined drag show but wanted there to be audience interaction and to have a connection to each city they were in. So that’s why they chose to also have local performers involved.”
Calling it a “hybrid,” Bang says it exists somewhere between the more formal touring drag shows and local drag shows.
“Violet and Gottmik have some lip sync battles that they’re planning to do during the show to really engage with the audience, which is definitely a little bit different than we normally see when other RuPaul stars come through,” they say.
While the show will most definitely resonate with fans, which will begin its 16th season in 2024, Bang says you don’t have to be intimately familiar with the reality television series to enjoy the touring show.
“You don’t necessarily have to be a Drag Race fan to see something you like at the show,” they say. “If you like fashion, dance, or art of any kind, this is the show for you. It’s a great opportunity to see this mix of two worlds that we don’t always get to see in Halifax. It’s going to be a special night, and I think it’ll be a show people will truly remember.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race superstars Violet Chachki and Gottmik’s Drag Extravaganza tour will stop in Halifax for a show at the historic Spatz Theatre on September 10th, 2023.
The show features the stars of RuPaul seasons 7 and 13 respectively, as well as local queer artists Elle Noir, Queera Bang, X, Diana B. Tease and DJ Not Applicable.
“We could not be more pleased with this cast, and to be bringing these incredible artists to the area,” said Queera Bang, Glitter & Grit producer.
Chachki won RuPaul’s Drag Race season 7, nabbing $100,000 and catapulting herself into the fashion and music industries, as well as breaking down cultural barriers. She became the first international drag queen to perform in India, and was invited to the MET Gala.
Gottmik was the first openly trans man to compete on Drag Race, and came in a shared third/fourth place. She is well-known in the fashion and music world, starring alongside Violet in multi-platinum artist Sam Smith’s “Holy” music video. After her run on Drag Race, she did a drive-in drag show during COVID-19. She co-hosts podcast “No Gorge” with Chachki.
“These two artists have so much chemistry together. Elle Noir, Diana B. Tease and I are so excited to get to share a stage with them,” said Bang.
“It’s going to be a special night, and I think it’ll be a show people will truly remember.”

Violet Chachki and Gottmik: Drag’s divine duo on defying expectations
As they make their GAY TIMES Magazine cover debut in the December 2022 issue, Violet Chachki and Gottmik discuss what brought them together and the effort that goes into pushing their artistry “as hard as possible”.

“I think that me and Mik just get each other,” says Violet Chachki of longtime collaborator and friend, Gottmik. “I don’t feel like I’ve really related to other drag queens in the same way.” Despite never competing on the same season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, the show where they both found fame six years apart, the two have partnered on a podcast, tours and simply being gorge. Their world domination is far from over, as the two are showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. “I’ve had, of course, previous friends that have been on Drag Race and everything,” Violet continues, “but I just think me and Mik, like, business wise, think the same way and expect the same things.” Their latest venture saw them host GAY TIMES Honours in London together on 25 November, which Gottmik describes as “a super full circle moment” because she has done makeup for previous cover stars and is a longtime friend of the outlet. “Our best comedy and when we work best together is when we’re just laughing together because we just really genuinely do get along so well,” she says of their hosting style, “and it just shows the best when we’re not even thinking about anything and just having fun.”
But when did they first become friends, let alone the like-minded business duo they are now? “Well, Mik was a fan of mine back in the day, since I was on Drag Race such a long time ago as Mik will happily remind me,” Violet says wryly, with a heavy emphasis on the “such”. She explains that they first met on Halloween roughly seven years ago, when Gottmik was working the door of a club in Los Angeles. “I don’t really know why, honestly, now that I’m thinking about it. Like, why were you working the door? I have no clue,” Violet jokes, with Gottmik swiftly clarifying this: “I don’t know girl – I took any gig I could get.” She adds that their relationship really took off after appearing on season 13 of Drag Race as they ended up sharing a trailer on a tour they did together. “And I think one day we were just like, ‘We should record this shit, whether people want to hear it or not, it’s fun for us!’ and we just kind of wanted to start doing that together because it’s just so, so amazing, what we get to do.” Everything happened “at the right time” in their friendship, Violet says , as Gottmik helped to revive her “love for drag” after doing it by herself “at this level” for so long. “I’m sort of at my limit for doing it alone.”
Although both queens have their own perspectives on fashion and art, they often draw inspiration from similar references due to having “a lot of crossover” in their interests. “I mean, we just want to elevate drag and keep pushing it forward and looking to the future and what that looks like, always, and we have a long list of things that we don’t like, so it gets very specific for the things that we do like,” Violet explains. Anyone who has seen an episode of Fashion Photo RuView starring Violet or Gottmik will know the high standards they have when it comes to fashion, though both openly acknowledge that they hold themselves to the “highest expectations” possible as well. According to Gottmik, part of the reason for this is that they both share the common goal of trying to break drag artists free from the “little pocket of pop culture” they are often shoved into: “[We] really just want to push the envelope constantly as queer artists and I feel like that’s a fight that is far, far, far from over. And so I think we just want to push our artistry as hard as possible so no one could ever ignore the artistry being put on the table via the ‘no gorge’ dolls.”
From Violet becoming one of the first drag queens to attend the Met Gala to Gottmik appearing in Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty Show, both have an endless stream of individual successes and are undeniably two of the most unstoppable forces in the world of drag and beyond. Earlier this year, Gottmik appeared on the cover of British Vogue out of drag in what she describes as a “mind-blowing” achievement: “High school me just never would have even thought that was possible,” she says of the experience, adding: “Like, that wasn’t even a dream of mine because I never even thought that would be possible.” For Violet, her A Lot More Me solo show, which was performed in cities all over the world, made it possible to prove a lot of those who doubted her wrong. “ I feel like a lot of people, like my previous managers or even like, naysayers, Drag Race fans or whatever it may be,” she says, “sort of put you in a box as a look queen or untalented or whatever it may be, and so to have a successful solo touring show is definitely one of my proudest moments because it’s like, this is my goal, I did it.”
Something that may not have been on Violet or Gottmik’s bucket list was appearing in a music video for one of Sam Smith’s hit singles. Unholy, a collaboration with Kim Petras, made the stars the first openly non-binary person and first openly transgender woman, respectively, to reach number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 – something Violet says was “powerful” to be a part of. Its accompanying visuals are, as she puts it, defiantly “progressive and queer” and help bring LGBTQ+ culture into the mainstream. She sees the song as “sort of a ‘fuck you’ to the heteronormative glass ceiling” queer people are often held back by, which is something she and Gottmik, the first openly trans person to compete on Drag Race, often challenge in their work and the way they play with the social construct that is gender. “ I love drag so much and fell in love with drag so hardcore because it’s just whatever you want it to be and it’s such a cool way to express gender and play with gender,” Gottmik explains. “And like, I use it as a way to fully figure out my gender, let alone [to] use it as art and so, now that I am transitioned and I’m comfortable with myself out of drag, I use it fully as art and I love making cool gender statements with it and playing with gender and looking like some weird, genderless alien at all times. So I’m very happy that I found drag and I’m able to express myself through it.”
There is undoubtedly a dark side to being a drag performer in the limelight, though, as the court of public opinion has been amplified more than ever by social m edia – making it impossible to ignore at times. Drag Race alumni in particular face an increasing amount of online hate, which can range from nasty messages to death threats. Violet’s tone gets more serious as she explains what it’s like to be on the receiving end of this. “I feel like, especially lately, we’ve been dealing with it more than usual and it changes every day, like some days it really affects me,” she says. “And some days I’m like, fuck those people. Like, they don’t know who I am. They don’t know me. They don’t know where I come from. They don’t know anything about me. They’re just making assumptions and projecting things on me – but every day it’s different. Like, some days I really can’t handle it and I have to completely log off.” Gottmik adds that, although a “certain amount of internet hate is just always going to somewhat get to you,” it’s important to focus on the way you feel about yourself and the people around you: “ And so, as long as I just stay nice, I guess, and keep putting out good energy, the universe is going to give what we give. And so, just because a few people online hate me for no reason because of like, a rumour or whatever their reasoning is, everyone that knows me in person gets a good experience, I hope.”
This issue is bigger than any individual queen, as the art of drag is facing increasing amounts of scrutiny from right wing groups in the US. Violet says this “anti-drag push” is being weaponised by conservatives as a “distraction”: “It’s such a tactic when there’s so many more pressing issues, in the States especially, that need to be focused on.” With both she and Gottmik working to push queer art into the mainstream even more, Violet adds that representation is imperative for LGBTQ+ artists “to be taken more seriously and put at the same level as our cis-hetero counterparts.” She continues: “ And so for us, it’s just about, you know, being seen as equal, not just legally, but being treated equally, like with getting paid, getting compensated, getting showcased in the same way. And it’s super important and it’s working! Drag Race alone, I think, has had a huge impact on young people and getting that visibility and telling our stories and getting those stories out there, along with other shows, you know, Pose and Transparent, all these shows help to shed light on the queer community.” Violet feels that at times “people forget the humanity” of others because of technology and social media. “I think another thing that really, I guess bothers me about the whole thing is there’s real, true, true evil in the world, like truly evil people doing truly evil things and our attention just seems so misguided sometimes with whatever sensationalised thing is going on on the internet,” she states, adding that this all sadly “comes with the territory” for people creating art. It’s exactly that, however, which helps her handle it: “ That’s the only thing that really drives me forward, is submersing myself in my creativity and ignoring all of that stuff and working on a project, or creative directing something, or fantasising about interior design or something that is going to be progressive for me, just as a mental health break [and] outlet.” Gottmik clearly knows her friend well as she swiftly jokes, “I know Violet’s having a bad week when I go to her house and there’s ten new lamps.”
There are, however, times when the queens can see the “funny” side to this online rhetoric as it often comes from people who have no experience with drag as an artform. “I feel like drag got to a place where it’s almost like a football game,” Gottmik says as she laughs. “I don’t know fucking shit about football, but I love watching the Super Bowl and I will comment on everything. As long as you’re respectful and you aren’t giving hate, you can have an opinion. It’s like, I wouldn’t be doing the art and putting it out publicly if I didn’t want to have a little perception of it, you know?” Some of the comments Violet finds most entertaining are the ones where people complain about her showing the “same” corseted silhouette they say they’ve seen from her before: “I’m like, yes, a corset again, I love corsets. What is so hard to understand? Like, yes, this is my aesthetic, I’m going to drill it into the ground and do it every which way I possibly can…I really do my art for me, so I think it’s funny when someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about has an opinion – I kind of like it.”
Given how far the queens have come since their seasons of Drag Race, it’s hard to imagine either of them putting their many projects to the side and returning to the mainstage anytime soon. However, Gottmik reveals that she is absolutely open to a comeback once she feels “more established” in other parts of her career. “ I loved being on Drag Race,” she excitedly shares. “I literally had the best time of my life. It feels like a drag summer camp and I just love that environment and going on something like All Stars would be really fun and, like I said, I’ve grown so much already. So I definitely would love that in the future.” On the other hand, Violet says she has “finally” started feeling “comfortable enough to keep pursuing things outside of the Drag Race world” after at times feeling defined by her time on the show. “I used to say that I would love to go back, but I don’t think so anymore – it’s just not for me,” she says after thinking for a moment. “I finally feel like I’m at a place where I can sort of branch out and do other things and work on other projects. And I definitely love working in TV, but the Drag Race fandom in the franchise is just so intense.” She highlights the toll that getting ready for, filming and promoting a season of the show takes on your physical and mental health: “I am a lady of a certain age now…I get anxiety just thinking about Drag Race. It really was one of the hardest things I’ve done and I was in such a different headspace, whatever, eight years ago that I was just so determined and I was so driven and it was like, truly my only focus in life was drag and Drag Race and winning. And I was so determined and headstrong and I’m just not in that headspace anymore. So for me, it’s probably a no.” Violet does, however, joke that she is a Gemini and could always change her mind, with Gottmik quickly interrupting to say: “Oh, the second Ms RuPaul calls, she’ll get her ass back there!”
The recent overturning of R oe v. Wade has thrown the future of LGBTQ+ rights into uncertainty in the US, especially when it comes to hard-fought battles surrounding things like same-sex marriage. Discussing how they want to see things progress for the community, Gottmik and Violet each emphasise the importance of both societal and legal acceptance. “That’s what Violet and I are fighting for every single day,” Gottmik says, explaining that she still faces the issue of having to ask herself whether or not she has been offered a gig to tick a “diversity checkmark box” or because they actually want her. “It’s this weird game because that exists [and] it’s like, okay, this company just offered me a gorge job, but I’m not going to say yes to it because I just googled them and they have done sketchy, weird, not nice stuff to the community.” Violet is quick to agree, adding that it sometimes feels as though LGBTQ+ people “ are looked at as truly like second class or accessories to cis-hetero people.” She wants “us to fully come into our own and own the power of be ing queer even more” and uses Drag Race as an example of how far we still have to go: “It didn’t start winning Emmys until like eight years in, you know? And for me, the first couple of seasons were so impactful and such amazing television, and it just feels like it takes so long to get recognised and to get our accolades and our little claps. It just feels like, comparatively, it’s not on the same level and I think it has to do with bigotry and homophobia.” Looking at the “long journey” ahead of us on the road to achieving equality, Gottmik plans to pursue more work in activism. “All we can do is keep being loud and keep being proud and keep being ourselves and standing up for the community,” she says. “The fight is not over and I’m not stopping anytime soon, honey.”

Gottmik and Violet Chachki Brought Epic Drag Style to Fashion Month
By Christian Allaire
Every fashion season brings the world’s most stylish stars to the front row. But there was a dynamic duo who particularly caught our eye at the fall 2022 collections: drag superstars Gottmik and Violet Chachki . At each presentation, the two friends would show up in coordinated ensembles, nailing the aesthetic of the designer whose show they were attending. One day, they could dress up in Blumarine’s sweet, Y2K frocks; the next, they embraced Prada’s sleeker, neutral pieces. “We had to have sprinter vans with clothing racks waiting, so we could run around and get to each show just in time,” Gottmik tells Vogue . “I grew up idolizing so many designers. Now, being able to show up to the shows, wearing the designs of those very same designers, has been nothing short of a dream come true.”
Going into the month, Gottmik and Chachki—who are some of RuPaul’s Drag Race ’s top queens—knew they would have to bring their best ensembles. “I definitely wanted to embody the mood of the brand, while bringing my own unique edge to the table,” says Gottmik. Chachki also saw an opportunity to send a message. “I always think of fashion as a language,” says Chachki. “For me, going into these spaces and representing the queer and gender non-conforming community is my top priority. I want fashion and pop culture to see queer people as we are—strong, beautiful, and confident.”
The two drag stars each have their own unique fashion taste. “Our styles are so different, in the sense that Violet loves a more vintage pin-up silhouette, whereas I gravitate to more of an edgy punk-rock vibe,” says Gottmik. But despite that, they end up looking harmonious as a pair. At the Roberto Cavalli show in Milan, for instance, Chachki opted for a glamorously wild tiger-print dress, while Gottmik opted for an edgier, strappy black gown. “Our looks always come together really organically,” says Chachki. “We never really plan to coordinate, it just happens.” Gottmik adds, “Our styles end up in a very similar world most of the time, because we both love breaking boundaries and pushing fashion and art to the limit.”
In Moschino
For Chachki, a major highlight was walking in the Richard Quinn show. “I felt powerful, queer, and seen,” says Chachki. Her favorite collection was Cavalli in Milan. “Fausto Puglisi has really taken the DNA of Cavalli and reinvigorated it. The clothes were incredible, the space was powerful, the models could walk, and the music was good.” She was also a fan of Miu Miu, Prada, Moschino, and Schiaparelli. “I really enjoyed getting to see the details of the Schiaparelli collection in an intimate cocktail setting,” says Chachki. The design is so smart, and fresh, but still glamorous and surreal.”
For Gottmik, the Moschino and Roberto Cavalli shows were the standouts in Milan. In Paris, it was Miu Miu, Ludovic de Saint Sernin, and Schiaparelli. “The level of detailing [at Schiaparelli], and ideas that go into each piece, just bleeds brilliance,” says Gottmik. “Macabre and punk rock references somehow becoming the most elegant, classic piece is so inspiring and exciting to me. Where else can I wear gold pierced nipples, 5-inch long toenails, and a gimp mask, without even thinking twice about walking into tea with the queen?”
Outside of the fashion shows, the duo made sure to take in tourist attractions like Milan’s Duomo and the Catacombs in Paris. “I also love going vintage or thrift shopping when I travel, and I scored some of the most amazing pieces this trip,” says Chachki, who scored a leopard-print Jean Paul Gaultier vest and Thierry Mugler dress. And of course, they had to experience the best food the cities had to offer. “Violet and I share a very strong love of food, so we basically would wake up, get into drag, attend shows during the day, rush home to get out of drag, and then immediately search for the most stunning restaurant,” says Gottmik.
True friends, their favorite part of the past few weeks was enjoying each other’s company, and meeting like-minded creatives. “I always treat fashion month as a creative conference; I truly believe it’s some of the best minds from different creative fields coming together in one place,” says Chachki. “I have some of the most meaningful conversations, see some of the best designs, make new connections, and see old friends.” Gottmik also left the busy month feeling inspired to take their drag art to the next level. “I grew up with such a love of fashion and art, and being here in the center of it all with some of my favorite people in the world, has not only been a dream come true, but also inspired me to keep pushing the limits of my art and who I am as an artist,” says Gottmik. “Time to crash the cistem for real.”

SAN FRANCISCO--( BUSINESS WIRE )-- Hims & Hers Health, Inc. (“Hims & Hers”, NYSE: HIMS), the multi-specialty telehealth platform focused on providing modern personalized health and wellness experiences to consumers, is today announcing its partnership with drag superstars Violet Chachki & Gottmik to launch the first-ever “No Gorge” Pride Tour 2022 from May 20 to July 14. Hims & Hers has united with the tour as its exclusive partner, which includes a unique collaboration with The Trevor Project as well as a campaign with the drag queens to destigmatize mental health and hair loss.
“We’re incredibly proud this Pride month to be joining forces with the Queens and The Trevor Project,” said Bette Ann Fialkov, Senior Director of Entertainment & Culture at Hims & Hers. “It’s beyond exciting to be working with the ‘No Gorge’ Pride Tour superstars on destigmatizing conversations and treatment surrounding conditions that many feel are shameful or embarrassing to have. Considering the Queens have such an amazing fan base, we are particularly looking forward to a unique and fun social campaign with Violet and Gottmik to help people embrace themselves for who they are and take action to take care of their body and mind. In addition, The Trevor Project—an organization that has had such a huge impact on LGBTQ youth—is so deserving of support and we are honored to be working with them through this union.”
Violet Chachki and Gottmik
In celebration of Pride season, the “No Gorge” U.S. Pride Tour gives queer fans and allies an intimate chance to celebrate with the Queens, Violet Chachki and Gottmik. Hims & Hers is the exclusive partner of the tour, and the company and Queens will be working together to combat stigma surrounding mental health and hair loss.
“We couldn’t be happier to be breaking down stigmas with Hims & Hers,” said Gottmik. “For myself and many others out there, mental health is a lifelong opportunity of improvement and it isn’t easy to talk about. Historically there’s been so much shame around mental health and it’s a privilege to join forces with a brand that is combating this by encouraging everyone to be loud and proud about caring for themselves, and empowering people to feel their best. Mental health issues should be talked about, and care and treatment shouldn’t be difficult.
“As someone who has dealt with the struggles of finding the right medications and even accessing a good treatment plan, I know that connecting with a professional about mental health and finding the right medication that works for you can be a life-saving action for those struggling with depression and anxiety. Working with Hims & Hers—a company that makes it simple and convenient to consult with a medical professional about medication and treatment—really hits home especially during a time like Pride month.”
“A lot of fun is had being a drag queen, but there are a few downsides to being this fabulous. Years of snatching ponytails, wigs, and using face tapes has been traumatic and stressful to my hairline resulting in hair damage and thinning,” said Violet Chachki. “Performing is my calling, and unfortunately all of the fantastic headpieces I wear have definitely taken a toll on my hair. I tried so many things to help my hair and ultimately turned to Hims when I felt it was time to seek professional help. The process of virtually consulting with a healthcare provider about my hair felt effortless, and I was provided with prescription treatment based on my own personal situation and unique needs. I’ve seen incredible results using the Topical Finasteride and Minoxidil Spray in particular; despite constant performances and wig-swapping, my hair is on its way to being luscious again—growing and feeling fabulous.”
The Trevor Project
Through this partnership as well, Hims & Hers will be providing access to free therapy services through their platform for select in-house crisis counselor volunteers at The Trevor Project – the world’s largest suicide prevention and mental health organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) young people.
“The Trevor Project’s life-saving work would not be possible without our incredible volunteer counselors who dedicate their time to supporting thousands of LGBTQ youth in crisis,” said Sofi Goode (she/her), Corporate Partnerships Manager at The Trevor Project. “Our research shows that more than 1.8 million LGBTQ young people seriously consider suicide in the U.S. each year, and our trained counselors are available 24/7, 365 days a year to offer free and confidential services to those who need a safe, non-judgmental place to talk. We’re beyond grateful to Hims & Hers for enabling us to provide many of our volunteers access to licensed mental health professionals and treatment on their platform for free. Taking care of others is always their top priority, and we want to make sure they’re also equipped with high-quality resources to take care of themselves.”

About Gottmik
Gottmik is an American Drag Queen, Makeup artist and Trans Rights Activist. Originally from Scottsdale, Arizona, Gottmik first started playing with makeup in high school, developing what would become a truly signature look. Later, moving to Los Angeles to study at FIDM, Gottmik started as a celebrity makeup artist, working with the likes of Kaia Gerber, Tinashe, Paris Hilton, Heidi Klum and Lil Nas X. “The only type of makeup that excited me was crazy, over-the-top drag makeup,” says Gottmik, whose signature makeup look is a face painted white with thin, drawn-on brows, a brilliant collision of kabuki, anime, goth, origami and something absolutely not of this world. On RuPaul’s Drag Race , Gottmik’s innate talent for show stopping glam was on full display, but it’s their fashion choices that have truly stolen the show and cemented them as a bonafide superstar. In 2021 Gottmik blasted into our social consciousness on Season 13 of RuPaul’s Drag Race (the highest-rated season in the show's history) and became the first trans man to compete on the series. Hitting a chord with millions of fans across the globe Gottmik placed runner-up and has since taken the world by storm literally jumping in fandom by 1.4 million followers in just over a year. Brands are quickly identifying this new and unique platform for sharing their message of inclusivity to the market. As Gottmik has famously said, “It’s time to crash the cistem.”

Gottmik & Disco Daddy tell story behind 'Scream' look on 'All Stars 9' (exclusive)
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
Judges, fans, and fellow drag artists have all been mesmerized by Gottmik 's "Drag Imitates Art" runway look featured in the second episode of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 9 . But before making this grand debut on the Drag Race runway, disco-obsessed crystal artist The Disco Daddy had already worked on various projects for A-list clients.
Namely, Disco Daddy's past work includes a pair of Erotica boxing gloves for Madonna , embellished looks for Lil Nas X and Lizzo 's recent world tours, a glistening swimsuit for Megan Thee Stallion in the "Bongos" music video, sparkly outfits (and even microphones!) for Dua Lipa , high-camp costumes for Las Vegas residencies from Katy Perry and Kylie Minogue , a fabulous tank top for Joe Jonas , and the crystal western garb worn by Karol G in the "Location" video. This impressive list of celebrity clients also includes Doja Cat, Saweetie, Jolin Cai, Cardi B, Pink, Ciara, Winnie Harlow, Adam Lambert, Zara Larsson, and perhaps most importantly, the one and only Violet Chachki .
"I've been working with Violet for almost 10 years now. We have a very close friendship," The Disco Daddy, otherwise known as Vincent Braccia, tells Out . "When Gottmik got on the show and they started working together, we bonded over crystal work. Gottmik is a big fan of the artistry. It was actually a very crazy night out when we met. It was right before the [season 13] finale. Mik had a shaved head for the Pinhead look , so I met Bald Mik first."
In an exclusive interview with Out , Gottmik and Disco Daddy discuss how they met, the close bond they've developed over time, and the detailed process behind the making of The Scream -inspired dress seen on All Stars 9 — which led to Gottmik's first maxi challenge win in this competition.

"Wait, I don't even remember when we met," Gottmik wonders out loud. "Was this a specific day?" Disco Daddy smiles and contemplates how much tea he's about to spill in front of other people. It's that cute, familiar little dance between two friends where one tries to telepathically tell the other, I'm trying not to give away too many details! "At the Abbey," he finally says.
"Oh, that night?! Yeah, no, that was so crazy," Gottmik recalls. "I was a huge fan of Disco Daddy because I'm obsessed with rhinestone artistry, and no one's stones look like his. I've been obsessed with Violet's outfits for so long. I was like, 'One day, I'll have one of these.' I was dying for it."
Gottmik tells Out , "We were at the Abbey [in West Hollywood] the night we met, and there could only be a certain amount of people at the table. It was the weirdest group of people ever, like Violet, Rosé, Eureka... just random. I was drinking so much, and I even tried to make out with [Disco Daddy]. But he denied me."
They both laugh. "And we've been best friends ever since!" Disco Daddy adds.

The "The Paint Ball" episode of All Stars 9 had three runway categories: "Monochromatica," "Drag Imitates Art," and "Paint Ball Eleganza." Upon learning that she would need an art-inspired look for the competition, Gottmik starts to go through all of her favorite paintings.
"I'm a huge art history diva," Gottmik explains. "I've taken lots of classes, and I'm just obsessed with art, period. I was trying to find a painting that everyone would know, but that wasn't full-on The Starry Night about it. Not so 'right in your face.' When I came across The Scream , I was like, 'Okay, everyone knows this painting,' and it's very me. It's spooky, edgy, and cool, but it also has color in it. It would be a little bit different for me but staying true to who I am at the same time."
1893's The Scream is an expressionist artwork typically seen as an autobiographical creation by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The distressed person in the painting — as well as its title — reflects the anxieties, uncertainties, and neurosis of the time. Certain art historians argue that, contrary to popular belief, the actual scream in The Scream is not coming from the person with mouth agape. Rather, the scream (whether real or imaginary) would be coming from the world around this person, hence why the covering of the ears to block out the sound.
"It was so hard to turn this painting into a dress," Gottmik explains. "We amped up the colors a little bit. Like, Disco Daddy had to go all in. We sat with Photoshop and patterned everything to look like that. Then he had to hand paint and fix everything to blend together. The Disco Daddy was painting and stoning and basically being Edvard Munch himself."
Disco Daddy says, "I also refuse to have seams on outfits, so all the designs have to match up. But this 40-pound giant gown had tons of seams. It was like she was literally wearing a painting that I also crystaled. It couldn't be more perfect for the category."
While Gottmik envisioned the dress and Disco Daddy was directly involved in bringing it to life, legendary designer Marco Marco physically constructed the garment. The stoning of the outfit involved three people working for over two weeks in "at least 1,000 hours of stone work."
Albert Sanchez and Pedro Zalba
This theme also fell right into the ball challenge, which required Gottmik to wear not one, not two, but three looks on the runway . With so much intricacy in the look — and the very specific makeup that would accompany it — this became an even bigger challenge for Gottmik.
"I had to pre-appliqué my face for some of the ball looks… which, actually, Disco Daddy provided me with the lace and taught me how to do it. I was so messy with rhinestoning," Gottmik says. "I would put glue everywhere, and then I'd glue it to the table, and I was like, 'What's going on?!' He helped me provide all of that, and I had to make little appliqués of my face so I could change fast."
The All Stars 9 competitor continues, "When we shot the look, we [sought out] to do exactly what we wanted. Disco Daddy rhinestoned the outfit onto my face and blended my makeup more seamlessly than I was able to do on the show, and it really made such a difference. It's fun working with Disco Daddy because he actually cares about the art part of it. It's not like anyone I've ever worked with, designer-wise, where it's like, 'Okay, cool, I want this dress,' and they just do it. Disco Daddy actually cares about the references, knows the references, and cares about making me feel gorgeous. He also pushes the artistry to a level that I didn't even imagine. We end up making the craziest stuff together."
"We're dangerous for each other," Disco Daddy agrees, "because we keep pushing. We're both 'yes-men.' Gottmik is like, 'Yeah, that would be great, but what if we did that?' And I'm like, 'And what if the stones came out of your face?' I love working with people who care about the aesthetic and the overall artistry. I work a lot with celebrities, which is fast-paced. They mostly don't have a say in what they're wearing, and some don't really care. It's fun, but there isn't a lot of collaboration."
The designer adds, " The Scream dress is something custom-made for Mik that no one else will ever wear. It will never be made again. It's literally a museum piece that gets to be showcased in one of my favorite shows. Again, it can be dangerous [laughs]. We can rack up a budget like nobody's business because there aren't any limits. I also refuse to not be able to do something. So if Mik asks, 'Wouldn't it be crazy if there were lines that were painted crystals?' I'm automatically like, 'Done.'"
Steven Simione
Constructed by Marco Marco, The Scream dress was hand-stoned with 500,000 rhinestoned crystals and weighed somewhere between 40 and 50 pounds. "I have a hard time just lifting it," Disco Daddy notes. "I can't imagine how Gottmik walked the runway in it."
Gottmik explains, "It was crazy because… it's also unnecessarily a tube dress [laughs]. For some reason, inside of it, your legs can only move one little inch, on top of it being a hundred million pounds. It's really long, so I had to wear insanely tall shoes as well. And then, obviously, the second you turn that runway, there's a million lights and cameras, and RuPaul's sitting two feet away from you. So, yeah, it's stressful! I practiced in the werk room, in the mirror, trying to figure out if it was better to do little steps or big steps. It was really painful and hard to walk in it."
Speaking of RuPaul, the Drag Race host's reaction — in complete awe of Gottmik's dress — is already becoming a meme on social media.
"This outfit was one of my favorite RuPaul reactions I've ever gotten. I love it when there's a campy moment and RuPaul gets it. We have a very similar sense of humor, so he usually gets my references. But this one, I could hear gasps over the music. It was wild. They were just freaking out. In the end, I was just so obsessed with that moment. No matter how heavy or painful it was, I felt like I wanted to walk the runway with that look a hundred more times."
Instagram (@thediscodaddy)
Leading up to All Stars 9 , many fans wondered what Gottmik was going to wear this season after she had already brought an All Stars -level runway package to season 13. And yet, that didn't seem to be a huge concern for the Drag Race superstar.
"Going into season 13, I wasn't really doing drag full-time. I was working on my physical artistry and who I was as a person. I wasn't at the bars every day turning it," Gottmik says. "My jokes and references were very in-your-face… not subtle. It was like, 'I'm a literal anal bead. I am literally this guy from Hercules that's flashing you.' Very literal. But now that I've been working as a drag queen every single day, my artistry is the number one thing in my life. I've honed in on combining fashion and campy, tongue-in-cheek humor."
She adds, "Looking at my All Stars package, I've gotten it to a place that I've always wanted it to be, and I'm so proud that I got there. I knew that I had worked really hard to get to that place, so I wasn't really thinking, 'Oh god, what are the fans going to think?' I knew that I had already grown so much as an artist. I was more coming from a place of excitement to show everyone how much I've grown."
"I even told RuPaul that one time," Gottmik reveals. "I was like, 'Honey, I can't wait to show people my outfits now. They're so much better.' Ru was like, 'Better than before?' I was like, 'Get ready, honey. Yes. A hundred percent.'"
In 2014, at age 20, Disco Daddy moves to New York City to pursue a career as a professional dancer. He meets Violet Chachki as one of the backup dancers for her world tour after being crowned the winner of Drag Race season 7.
"It was kind of a random cast of older queens and Violet," Disco Daddy notes. "We were both 22 at the time, so we had no choice but to bond. Everyone else was not featuring us at all . So that was the beginning of our relationship, and since then, I've been making outfits for her. I was also the choreographer and creative director of her solo tour. Similar to my relationship with Mik, Violet is also hyper-f*cking-artistic and we encourage each other to ridiculous degrees that we can't even live up to. And now our good working relationship sort of transferred over to the three of us."
But the years go by, the lockdown happens, and Disco Daddy's dancing prospects come to a halt. So he starts making a collection of outfits with Violet and other friends, which gets picked up by Vogue 's Christian Allaire in November 2020.
"We just posted the campaign and Vogue picked it up within that same week. And ever since then, I've been doing this full-time, which is crazy," Disco Daddy reflects. "It was never really the plan. It just happened."
Meanwhile, Gottmik meets Violet around 2015. "I was working the door at a party she was booked at, but we didn't really connect until I did her makeup a couple of times. It's like Disco Daddy is saying, she's such a perfectionist and so good at making references her own. It's so fun having these two as some of my best friends."
"Any time we're together, even if we're not working, we're thinking of all these crazy scenarios. We're creating full TV shows and solo tours. We're like, 'What if we did a P-Town residency together?'" Gottmik says. "Just dreaming at all times, and pushing each other's limits, and laughing the whole way. It's the most inspiring friend group I could have ever asked for. When do you get to be best friends with this level of talent, and travel the world with them, and be able to create things like this? I just feel like this doesn't happen in any industry, ever. We're so lucky."
One of Gottmik and Violet's main projects as a duo is their YouTube series/podcast, No Gorge , in which the two drag stars discuss their lives, careers, fashion, and artistry. A fun fact: Disco Daddy is responsible for crystalizing the white calla lilies that sit between Violet and Gottmik on their podcast set. "Anywhere I can integrate myself," he jokes.
Gottmik adds, "We were like, 'Maybe the microphones should be fully crystal and hematite in four different colors. It has to be wild.' And Disco Daddy is always just like, 'Yes, and they have to be size zero. I'll have them ready by tomorrow.'"

Gottmik's Scream dress marks the first time that a Disco Daddy look is featured on RuPaul's Drag Race . "I'm a huge fan of the show. I watch every single episode," he says. "And if I ever made something for Drag Race , I wanted it to be something that I was really proud of, worn by someone that I really connected to. It was always on the mood board, but this made the most sense."
Disco Daddy explains, "As soon as this idea came to me, I was like, 'This is what I'm doing. We have two weeks, but we're going to get it done.' And as the van was picking up Mik for Drag Race , I was running with the dress. Well, walking, because it's a hundred million pounds, but it was definitely one of the last things to be finished."
When asked if Drag Race fans can expect more Disco Daddy creations on All Stars 9 , Gottmik confirms that more collaborations between them are, indeed, featured in this season.
Having worked with so many A-listers already, we ask Disco Daddy which collaborations he's dreaming of doing in the future. "Even as you're listing off the people that I've worked with… it just happens so fast that it's hard to keep track of it. I would love to do Cher . Cher is my queen. And I would love to do RuPaul. I would love to do Gaga."
He concludes, "I also want to have more collaborative, artistic relationships. I told Mik that if I was a billionaire, I would just make outfits for Mik all the time. The end result is way more fun and gratifying for me than who's wearing it, honestly."
