Remembering Rufio: The Pop-Punk Band Who Shredded Like Metalheads

In 2003, Rufio were the absolute peak of what a pop-punk band could achieve, creatively. Having signed to Offspring frontman Dexter Holland ’s Nitro Records (the label that launched AFI ) Rufio were poised to become pop-punk’s new heroes during the genre’s most explosively popular period. Rufio didn’t take the prototypical pop-punk approach, however; they used their metal influences to write complex tracks filled with shred guitar, punishing drums and densely-layered arrangements.

Rufio’s 2001 debut, Perhaps, I Suppose… , was an unexpected smash for newly formed label The Militia Group, who reportedly moved 100,000 copies of the album with absolutely no radio play. Instead, the gospel of Rufio was largely spread through a video by Maple Skateboards, who used “Above Me” to score their street skaters. “Above Me” showcased everything Rufio was about — high energy, catchy choruses and raw production — but the song’s lead riff and non-stop guitar and bass fills dropped jaws. No pop-punk band had ever attempted something with such surgical precision.

Tracks like “Dipshit” and “Save the World” kept fans in a whirlwind with inventive precision, but it’s the closing track to Perhaps, I Suppose… that truly shined a light on what was behind Rufio’s style. Rufio’s two-minute “The Wrath” is still, to this day, the heaviest track to ever grace a pop-punk album. Part thrash, part groove, “The Wrath” is a crunchy shred fest filled with mind-altering guitar work. Did it make any sense? No. But did pop-punk fans dig it? Absolutely.

When 2003’s MCMLXXXV was announced, the entire pop-punk community waited in attention as if a new Blink-182 or New Found Glory record was about to drop. The sophomore effort was no slump, turning out to be Rufio’s biggest career success. The extravagant guitar work of Scott Sellers and Clark Domae, the roaming bass of Jon Berry and ridiculously fast and inventive drumming of Mike Jimenez had found a huge audience, allowing Rufio to tour the world.

The band’s ‘80s heavy metal influences shined through again on tracks like “Science Fiction” and “Pirate,” utilizing a dual guitar attack for both leads and licks. “Decency” is easily the album’s most shred-tastic track, however, as Rufio threw in a killer solo that lifelong metalheads could respect. Even Sum 41 ’s Dave ‘Brownsound’ Baksh, pop-punk’s most metal-tinged guitarist, waited until 2004’s Chuck to really let the Metallica worship fly, so Rufio were first to the punch on that front, without ever touching the sacred graces of TRL ’s Top 10.

Unfortunately for Rufio fans, the California band would cease to exist following their somewhat disappointing 2005 The Comfort of Home album. Inspired to never make the same album twice, Rufio got even more experimental with off-time vocal melodies, numerous instrumental interludes and their heaviest production by far. Though the songs didn’t connect as strongly as their two previous albums, Rufio still threw down some all-timers like “Out of Control” and “Drowning.”

The album even had some Avenged Sevenfold style metalcore riffing in “Interlude #2” and almost Iron Maiden -like back-and-forth soloing on “My Escape.” Production on The Comfort of Home sadly relied a little too much on guitar effects and caused some of the album’s most expressive work to get buried in the mix.

After breaking up in 2007, founding members Scott Sellers and Clark Domae reconstructed Rufio with a new rhythm section and delivered the infectious Anybody Out There in 2010 — a massive step up from The Comfort of Home and an album that fully embraced the warmth and bounce of modern pop-punk. Still, that didn’t stop Sellers from kicking off the album with some impressive tapping in “Little World.”

Rufio finally bit the dust in 2012, ultimately saying goodbye to a cult fan base spread across the planet. Sellers formed a new band called Mercy Street, releasing the  Let Me Live album in 2014 to surprisingly little buzz despite exceptional songwriting and a very Rufio-esque sound.

On March 29 of this very year, Scott Sellers released a collection of seven tracks he had been demoing on Soundcloud called The Judge . Once again, the stylistic imprint is classic Rufio, mixing poppy tearjerkers with big choruses and technical mastery. To check out Sellers’ The Judge , head over to his Bandcamp account .

As for Rufio, their music has withstood the test of time, with the old “Above Me” skate video having accumulated well over a million views on a random YouTube channel. You’ll also find big numbers on tracks like “White Lights” and their fiendishly satisfying cover of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” from the first ever Pop Goes Punk compilation. For fans who cross the pop-punk/metal railroad tracks, however, Rufio will always be remembered as pop-punk’s most ambitious band with a technical pedigree that none of the  Green Day s or All Time Lows could ever touch.

Live reviews

The house lights dim and then a very familiar exert is played over the in house system. It is kids shouting “Rufio, Rufio, Rufio…” and then I realize it is the part of the film Hook (1999), when the children in Neverland, are chanting Rufio’s name before he makes his entrance. This is what the California pop punk band Rufio use at the start of their set and at the start of their song “Above Me”, which sees singer, Scott Sellers, play a riff at breakneck speed to open the song. All of the other members join in playing at the same pace. There is a mosh pit at every corner of the crowd at this festival and the audience is like sardines crammed into this small space to watch Rufio. One of the things that I was completely unaware of is that Rufio are also acrobats, they do guitar flips, which is when one, spins their guitar around their body extremely quickly, which is a sort of “don’t try this at home” kind of move with about a 60% success rate due to guitar necks breaking of at the 5th fret, bassist Jon Berry executes multiple bass flips throughout that show, not to mention this insane ninja back roll that he does (still bass clad) over guitarist Mike Jimenez. Such an exciting band to watch! Their set closes with their most well known song, “White Lights” in which, the audience sing along to, skanking along in true pop punk fashion. Such an exciting band to watch indeed!

Dante Basco Discusses Becoming Rufio for Hook , the Character's Legacy, and So Much More

About 10 to 15 years ago, I was waiting for a movie to start at San Diego Comic-Con and a familiar face popped up in one of the commercials. It was actor Dante Basco, selling Sprite (or Sprint maybe?) and someone in the crowd screamed “RU-FI” to which everyone. else. in. the. theater. replied “Ohhhhhhh!”

It was, quite honestly, a perfect moment. A moment that spoke to a simple truth: To a certain generation, no one is better than Rufio, Basco’s character from Steven Spielberg’s 1991 Peter Pan reimagining, Hook . Rufio was a leader, a badass, and the one kid feared by Captain Hook. He didn’t just have one mohawk, he had three . He was the coolest and to this day, he’s a fan favorite character in pop culture .

So when I was contacted about interviewing Basco in the leadup to Hook releasing on 4K HD this week, I replied quickly and eagerly. To get the chance to talk to an actor who was such a huge part of your childhood was too good to pass up and, afterward, I realized the interview was too good to cut any of it out. We talked to Basco about how he got the role, the food fight, the amazing costume, Rufio’s legacy and so much more.

io9: Take me back to the beginning What do you remember about getting the role?

Dante Basco: The audition process is always, you go to auditions and you go to callbacks. The crazy thing about Hook was it was one of the movies in town that everybody knew about. It was the biggest film shooting in Hollywood at the time and the idea of Robin Williams playing Peter Pan really captured everybody’s imagination. I remember calling my manager and saying “I just want to audition for any of these roles.” My little brother auditioned for one of the Lost Boys and I was like, “I want to get in on it.” And then I got an audition. I actually went to the audition with my other brother. My little brother had auditioned for one of the roles, Dion, and then my other brother, Darion, we both auditioned for this Rufio character.

So I’m getting coaching on it and kind of dressing up and going in for the audition with the casting director, Janet Hirshenson, and it went great and a few days later they were like “Steven Spielberg wants to meet you.” I was like “Wow, that’s cool.” So I remember going to Amblin which is where Steven Spielberg’s office is on the backlot of Universal Studios . I don’t know if you know the studios but most of it is grey soundstages and what not. But there’s a little section in the back of it that’s Amblin, which is like this Spanish Villa on the back lot of Universal . It has its own security and all that kind of stuff and I later found out, when I went to Steven’s house for rehearsals, it’s designed like his house.

So the legend of Steven Spielberg’s office, especially in the ‘90s, was that Steven had an arcade in his offices . So we go to his offices, there’s about a half dozen of kids there and they’re like “Go to the arcade.” So we go to this room and it’s a full video game arcade in the office. It was crazy. And this was before all the PS4s and stuff. And we were just playing for a while and someone goes “Steven wants to see you now.” And I was like “Oh, I’m here for an audition.” So I go in the back and I meet Spielberg and the crazy thing about that audition is we just talked. I remember we talked about a film I did before that film and I brought up Ratso Rizzo because I was a really big Dustin Hoffman fan. And he was like “What?” and I said, “Yeah this character I did was kinda like Ratso Rizzo.” He goes “Did you say Ratso Rizzo? Midnight Cowboy ?”

So we started talking about Midnight Cowboy and he was looking at me like “Look at this young punk.” And in the middle of the interview, I was like, “Do you want to read the scene?” And he said, “No you don’t have to read the scene.” We didn’t even read the scene . He was like “I just wanted to meet you.” So we were leaving, pulling out of the parking lot at Universal, and my mom was like “How did it go?” I said “I don’t think I got it. We didn’t even read the scene, we were just talking.” Then a few days later they offered me the ro le , which was crazy. Then I remember being on the set a few months into it, just hanging out and I asked Steven what happened. And he said, “You know Dante, we searched all over the country for this role and out of the thousands of kids we read, you were the only kid that scared me.”

io9: That is amazing. So what did you bring to the character that wasn’t already in the script? How much of it is you?

Basco: I mean he was there. [But] I was a serious young actor and I was working with legends in the industry. So I would go home every night and watch Hoffman films, watch Pacino films and maybe I brought an aspect of that. Plus, he said I scared him. I grew up in a pretty rough neighborhood, Paramount, California, outside of L.A., like near Compton, that’s where I’m from. What I was bringing to the character, especially at that time in my life, I grew up in a gang neighborhood. Gangsters were around, drugs and everything. It was a tough time to grow up. It was cool, but it was a tougher neighborhood. And to a degree, the Lost Boys are a little gang . So I think I had a bit of that coming into it.

But on top of that, when you’re chasing giants, I’m studying a lot at the time, my acting coach is going over scenes and again I’m watching these films. Later in life, running into Dustin at different premieres and whatnot he’d introduce me to some other actors and he’d say “This kid is chasing us.” That’s what you’re bringing as a young actor, especially working with your idols. Now looking back it’s so weird. You’re a foil. You’re another kind of leader. There’s Robin Williams, there’s Dustin Hoffman, then there’s you as this other force that’s supposed to be standing up to these guys, not as the equal but as the new star. So that’s part of what I brought to it. It really was a young hungry actor kid from the neighborhood just trying to do a good job and to be a great actor.

io9: I have to ask about the food fight scene. Any time anyone talks about Hook , they talk about the food fight scene. What was that like, what do you remember about it?

Dante: We actually shot that food fight twice, which is crazy. But, the funny thing about the food fight, for me, is if you remember it’s a scene where Peter Pan and I are fighting. A lot of times when you remember back to certain scenes you remember your state of mind or how you were feeling that day. And it’s one of peoples’ favorite scenes in the movie. It’s so fun, it’s so entertaining but for Rufio it’s a bad day . It’s like the end of his reign. So I always remember it like everyone else was having a good time but I was not having a good time that day.

But the great feeling of us going back and forth and the banter with Robin Williams and really seeing the magic of Robin doing the lines then being able to improv and sitting there trying to improv with Robin Williams is pretty crazy. Then we get to do what every kid wants to do which is have a food fight. At that time they had like a whole thing of food, not just the crazy stuff we were throwing at each other, but there were all kinds of different foods out there. Then they started making all this frosting stuff in different colors that we were throwing at each other. Nowadays you can go to the supermarket and probably get like turquoise blue and pink and all that kind of stuff but back in those days you couldn’t go to the store and buy that. They were making that stuff on the set right in the moment. Everyone had a fun time doing the food fight and I always remember afterward everyone washing up, groups of Lost Boys, we were just a mess. There was only a certain amount of wardrobe that we could do before they’ve got to wash everything. It was just boys being boys. It was fun.

io9: Did you do one take, wash up, and then do a second take or did you do the second take on another day?

Basco: We did small takes then we did one take where everyone could kind of go crazy. And we went back and shot another day because it wasn’t easy to clean up that stuff especially off the costumes. One take and it’s done. You’re over. That’s it.

io9: Speaking of the costume and the hair, that’s part of what made Rufio so iconic. Was that always the concept? Did you have any input? Tell me about the look of the character.

Basco: He was the newest Lost Boy. The most modern Lost Boy and he wasn’t in the J.M. Barrie books. He was a new character created for this film and there was a lot of sketching going on. Sketches of Rufio with like dreadlocks, there were different looks going on. And then they just started trying things and that’s when the look began, which now is great. But I always tell people when I go to Comic Cons, there are people dressed up as Rufio at all the Comic Cons, it’s this really cool look, but when you’re 15 years old and you just want to be cool, you know? It kind of took me back a little bit.

They were like “We’re going to try some things out.” and all of a sudden...look, it was the ‘90s. We were wearing super baggy clothing. We’d come to the set every day in baggy jeans, cargo pants, and hip-hop, double XL shirts and then all of a sudden it’s like “Put on these tights.” “What?” These ripped, skin-tight jeans and then put me in a midriff t-shirt with my belly button sticking out and I was like “What is going on here?” Throw on like a Michael Jackson jacket and this was ‘91. Michael was not cool in ‘91. Like he was cool in the ‘80s then he wasn’t cool, then he came back and was cool again late ‘90s but at this moment it was like “This is not cool.”

So you’ve got this whole Michael Jackson thing going on. OK. And then what about the hair? What about a mohawk? What about three mohawks? Like what? And I was just a good little soldier on set like, “Let’s try it out, but what about the dreadlock look? That dreadlock look was cool.” But they’re like “No, let’s try these three mohawks. And literally this is like a three, four-hour situation putting together costumes with costumers and going another two/three hours just to do the hair and the makeup and then you’re like “Okay, I don’t know how I feel about all this right now. I feel crazy.”

Then they’re like, “Let’s bring you to the set, let’s show Steven.” It looked crazy. It felt crazy. And I just remember walking on the set the first time with the whole wardrobe makeup crew and they’re like “Steven we’re going to show you something.” Steven is directing some of the other Lost Boys at the base of the Nevertree or what not. I come walking around the corner and he slowly turns around and goes “Ummmm...Yes!” I’m like, “Yeah?” He was like, “This is it” and I went, “Oh my God, I have to walk around with my belly button out?” But now it’s classic look. You see people with red mohawks you’re like “That’s very Rufio” now. But at the time when you’re 15, you’re very worried about “Can I just look cool?”

io9: Though it was embarrassing then, it seems like you still really embrace the character. You’ve reprised the role online and stuff and sometimes actors hate looking back and talking about their childhood roles. What makes you so okay and cool about this one?

Basco: I mean, I’ve never not liked it, but you move on in your career. You grow up. But after 25 years it’s fun to have characters on your resume and your past that people still love. I think social media changed a lot of things. Rufio’s a classic character and I did Zuko (from Avatar: The Last Airbender ) for Nickelodeon that became really popular within the whole comic con world. I think it’s one of those things that, as you grow up, you’re able to appreciate aspects of your career and celebrate them with fans out there and understand and engage on social media . Like it’s nostalgic for me too so it’s kind of fun to capsulize a part of your life which, to me, was 15. Clearly, it means a lot to so many people and it’s something I’m proud of too, work-wise.

Look, everyone who ever comes to Hollywood, you hope to do something that people will remember you for. We work on so many things and I continue to work today, not just as an actor but as a writer and a producer . But [certain roles] really kind of mean things to people. [ Hook ] has become, for a certain generation, a part of the vernacular. The way they talk to each other. How they think of it, who they are. It’s weird. I’m constantly blown away. And, again, with social media, you’re able to experience it in a different way with people . Like people sent me tattoos of Rufio on their bodies . As far as like “Bangarang” coming out by Skrillex , and talking to him about the whole thing and just meeting other artists that were influenced by it and impacted by it. It meant so much to a generation of people.

Also, being a person of color, that character Rufio, as a person of color in a leadership role in a major film, for a lot of the Asian American community, that was the first cool Asian American character they’d seen in their lifetime. And that impacted even a movie today. Jon Chu, [director of] Crazy Rich Asians , he’s become a good friend. And talking about representation in film and him going “That was the first time I felt represented” and how he felt he could be a part of Hollywood because of that character. Those are the kinds of things that you don’t even know until later on in life, the impact you had. These roles we do in our career are like pebbles on the pond, we never know what ripples they make.

io9: Man, I could talk to you forever, but I only have time for one more question. When was the last time you watched Hook and how did you feel it help up?

Basco: I went on a tour for the 25th anniversary , which was about two years ago, with Jimmy Madio who played Don’t Ask, we always stayed friends throughout our careers. We went on a tour together with Alamo Drafthouse and we watched it together once with [executive producer] Jim V. Hart. And it was magical, man. It was the first time I’d seen it in like, over a decade or so and in a movie theater with a packed audience, sitting next to Jimmy and sitting next to Jim Hart and Jim telling me some stories, since I was a kid, telling me a bit about what’s going on on the adult side of the film, it was pretty magical.

The further away from a project you get you can start appreciating it as a fan and not as being attached to it. In that way I really loved it. It really held up to me and it really represented...so much has changed in the world and so much has changed in our world of Hollywood, filmmaking, the connection to how we used to make movies. I mean we don’t make movies the same way anymore. No one is doing what Spielberg did . I try to explain to young filmmakers now, there is no CGI. You see that pirate ship? You walked in the room and there was a life-sized pirate ship in a big soundstage, in the water. It was crazy. It was just a magical way to do work. They just don’t make movies the same way right now. So kind of being connected to old Hollywood in that way is pretty magical.

It’s weird. A lot of times as an actor you watch a film it’s like thumbing through a photo book from your past. It’s people you haven’t seen in a while, there are people that have passed away, and there are people you owe phone calls to. And again, like, it’s my teenage days. Who gets to look back at their teenage days in a crazy home video like Hook ?

If you’d like to see Basco’s crazy home videos from the age of 15, it was finally released in 4K this week. It’s called Hook .

AURORA On Womaning Up & Connecting To Nature: 'It Felt Like Singing On Behalf Of Mother Earth'

Ric Rufio On What It Means To 'Make It' In The Music Industry

“It’s like a slipstream - you jump in, and it takes you to completely different places.”

rufio band tour

Sydney-based electronic-pop artist Ric Rufio has always been surrounded by the limelight. His very first memory of the entertainment industry still sits squarely in his mind - watching his father tackle the notoriously tough nature of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival , putting on a show and trudging out into the streets to sell tickets.

It’s the excitement of the hustle that Rufio remembers most, which had him addicted from the start and inspired him to go down his own path, singing in an underground jazz club three or four nights a week.

“That was the dream,” he notes, referring to his mini Jazz jaunt. A couple of years later, Rufio has had a career that most people would be in awe of. Leaving his beloved Jazz nights behind, he’s gone on to have a very successful career as a backing vocalist, working with some of the most revered artists around the world.

So far, he’s shared the stage with Ed Sheeran for his 2015 ARIA  performance and then with Adele  on her 2017 tour of Australia. He’s also worked on the popular Aus TV show The  Voice , singing with Ricky Martin and Kelly Rowland . Despite the plethora of moments to choose from, there’s one that sticks with Rufio the most.

“I was brought in to do backing vocals for George Benson , which was so cool but so hectic. He wasn’t even in the studio, the producer had just bought in backing vocalists to do overdubs for one of his live records, so the pace and speed we had to maintain to get stuff done was just insane. There was a moment in the session where I was like, fuck, can I keep up here? Like, it was so hard! But it was awesome. Getting through that was such a cool experience.”

Persevering through times like that is what Rufio believes prepared him for his next chapter, where he became one of the leading tour vocalists for Flight Facilities - a gig that many vocalists would kill for.

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

“I’d done a bit of work with Future Classic, helping some of their artists with their vocals, and then Dan Zilba [A&R] recommended me to the boys [Flight Facilities], and I had to audition. They hit me up on a Wednesday, and I sent them everything the next morning because I went into a full-on learn mode and knew I could get it done quick,” He explains.

Luckily, It didn’t take long for the team to call and let him know that he’d be joining them from now on.

“It was crazy. Three weeks later, we had our first show of the album tour, and then we were doing Groovin The Moo, and then it was an American tour straight away. That whirlwind felt so wild, and it was kinda cool because going from being a backing vocalist to being up the front was so different.”

Somewhat struck by the craziness of his story so far, Rufio stops and considers, saying, “It’s like a slipstream - you jump in, and it takes you to completely different places.”

Throughout these insane experiences, Rufio was also working on his own music. His first taste of original success started in 2016 when he uploaded a song to Soundcloud to show a producer, which unexpectedly went viral overnight.

“I remember waking up two months later, and there were thousands of notifications on my phone because this LA blog, Hilly Dilly , had found it somehow. Suddenly, I had all of these overseas labels like Def Jam and Parlophone offering me these meetings, and I flew over and took them. Still, I decided not to pursue those and sign with a local group, Mirror Music, run by Kurt Bailey.

“It started off well, but I think Kurt had bitten off a bit more than he could chew. He was doing so much at the time, managing Gang of Youths and Middle Kids, so It was pretty deflating how that petered out because I had this body of work that was ready to go. I was lucky that Flight Facilities came along around that same time, so I could just do that and create more work in my own time,” He admits.

Despite Rufio’s disappointment that he lost his original ‘wave’ of success, it’s arguably more impressive that he’s made a comeback so brilliantly. In the last year, he released his first single, Alone , and more recently, Daily BB , to a sea of love and support, easily slipping back into the uphill rise. Again, It’s an achievement he attributes to the wealth of experiences he’s already had in the industry.

“I think the work ethic and head down bum up mentality carries through. Sometimes when writing, you can get too stagnant waiting for inspiration. So when I see these other people just working, I realise my processes have to be better. Like, being in the Flight Facilities team and just seeing how disciplined they are when it comes to writing in the studio. They don’t say, ‘Oh, we don’t have anything right now. We're just going to see what happens.’ They make it happen. That’s been really influential to me.”

Since his early start in 2016, Rufio has changed more than just his mindset and attitude towards music as a whole but also how he writes, switching from self-proclaimed ‘sad-boi R&B’ music to something a little more upbeat.

“Before, I was writing more about myself and what I was musically feeling at the time. Since joining Flight Facilities, I got to see how cool it is to make music that physically moves people and people want to have fun and dance to.”

Despite the constant changes and growth within his unique career, Rufio admits that one thing he will never change is his voice, which has seen him through the majority of his career without ever slipping into ‘what’s cool’.

“I don’t love it when I hear someone that sounds like the Australian version of another artist, so I’ve always been conscious of vocal trends, and I’m not trying to sound like singers that are on point in terms of phrasing and how I sing.

“Like you and I are talking right now, and we both have our own individual speaking voices. What I don’t understand is when people sing in a homogenous way when their talking voice is so different. That's what I love about artists when I hear their voice in their songs.”

“A lot of artists will try to sound like this on one record, and then on the next one, they sound like whatever is hot. I’m a bit stubborn in that sense, and it could be my downfall that I’m not trying to sound like everyone else.

“It’s always tricky because you go, ‘I wonder if anyone is gonna like this stuff because I don’t sing like everyone else.”

It’s clear that Rufio’s fears are misplaced, with new and old fans lapping up his latest offering, Daily BB , which resembles an old-school Mac Miller and Anderson .Paak tunes.

“The chords in that song are actually an old soul music ‘turnaround’ and are a homage to the old soul era, but instead of playing all the chords in that song, I decided to sing them and then stack them to make them into a synth. From there, the flow in the verses was like a Mac Miller verse and just ran with it.”

“My thing is that when I’m writing, I always ask myself, ‘Would I be embarrassed to show Dev Hynes this?’ If the answer is no, I’m happy to release the song. It doesn’t mean it’s necessarily good, but at least I’m happy to release it,” He laughs.

About rufio.

Originating in suburban Rancho Cucamonga, California, Rufio was formed in 2000 by members Scott Sellers (guitar, vocals), Jon Berry (bass, vocals), Clark Domae (lead guitar), and Mike Jimenez (drums). Sporting a bright pop-punk sound that drew comparisons to blink-182 and Sum 41, the band issued its debut recording, Perhaps, I Suppose..., in 2001 on the Revelation Records label. The band returned in June 2003 with the well-received MCMLXXXV (1985) (Rufio's first release on the Nitro label), which was recorded with the aid of producer Nick Rasculinecz and went on to sell over 75,000 copies. Rufio's members further upped their profile with a series of Warped Tour dates that summer. A more mature effort, The Comfort of Home, was released in July 2005. By the following autumn, the guys had joined forces with MxPx and Relient K on a national tour. Berry amicably parted ways with the band in early 2006, though, with Jimenez following closely behind. Rufio added new members to the lineup and hit the road for a string of springtime shows, but the loss of two founding members proved to be a difficult hurdle. The next year, Rufio officially called it quits, playing their last American shows in June 2007 and capping things off with a short South American tour. The breakup didn't last long, though. Rufio gave a few scattered performances throughout 2008 and officially re-formed in 2009, with newcomers Taylor Albaugh and Terry Stirling, Jr. rounding out the lineup. After releasing an EP, The Loneliest, in December, the group returned the following year with Anybody Out There. ~ Greg Prato

Jon Bon Jovi says 'Forever' pays homage to The Beatles, his wife and the working class

rufio band tour

As the lights faded in a ballroom of the Los Angeles Convention Center, a wallop of guitar and drums rang through the room.

Jon Bon Jovi, sleek in all black, took his rightful place center stage as drummer Tico Torres, keyboardist David Bryan, bassist Hugh McDonald and guitarists John Shanks and Phil X launched into an anthemic intro of “Whoa-oh-oh-ohs.”

The audience who had come to honor Bon Jovi’s philanthropic efforts at the annual MusiCares gala glanced around with puzzled looks.

Was this a new Bon Jovi song? If so, were they debuting it as the opening salvo at a glitzy Grammys charity event when the MusiCares honoree doesn't usually perform until the end of the night? And was that Paul McCartney sitting at a front table pumping his first along to the very-Bon-Jovi chorus?

Yes, yes and yes.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

“Legendary,” the first single from Bon Jovi’s 16 th studio album “Forever,” out June 7, received its christening in a room that included McCartney , Bruce Springsteen , Melissa Etheridge, Shania Twain and numerous other music VIPs.

A few weeks later, the infectious pop rock song lyrically rooted in Bon Jovi's trademarks of loyalty, friendship and a blue-collar ethos began its steady chart climb , eventually landing in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Rock Digital Song Sales and Adult Contemporary charts.

It was an auspicious rollout for the band’s first album since “2020” as well as the first for frontman Jon Bon Jovi since undergoing vocal cord surgery in 2022.

During a recent interview about the band’s four-part Hulu documentary, “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,” Bon Jovi, 62, also shared some insight into a few of the songs on “Forever.”

Bon Jovi is still rocking the talk box

The second single from the album, the rhythmically pumping “Living Proof," is coated with another Bon Jovi hallmark – the talk box, which the band reinvigorated from its ‘70s-era origins on its signature smash, “Livin’ on a Prayer,” and bowed to again for 2000’s “It’s My Life.”

“I will give Richie (Sambora) full compliments for commandeering the talk box in 1986,” Bon Jovi says of the band’s original guitarist and frequent song collaborator . “We both knew it of course from (Peter) Frampton and Joe Walsh, but I would think from ’86 forward that instrument belongs to Richie and to Bon Jovi using it again.”

Bon Jovi is careful to credit his forebears for the distinctive wonky sound created by the mouth device and says he returns to the credo his mother told him: “Find out who your influence's influences were … because now if anyone says oh, the talk box, that’s Bon Jovi. No.”

Jon Bon Jovi writes a love letter to his wife

The ninth track on “Forever,” the piano ballad “I Wrote You a Song,” is a sweet testimony of love shaded with insecurity.

“How could it ever be beautiful enough?” Bon Jovi sings in a slightly strained voice.

The target of his affection is obvious, he says. His wife of 35 years , Dorothea.

Words including “I can’t give you the ocean or the sky/the wonders of the world can’t compare to you/I did the only thing I know how to do – I wrote you a song,” as well as the melody, came to Bon Jovi in the middle of the night.

“I had a notebook next to my bed,” he recalls, “which I sometimes do when I’m in a place where I’m writing and I know that position well – in your underwear on the side of the bed, asleep with a pen in your hand and scribbling and you wake up to see every single word of that first verse and the melody written.”

Bon Jovi shared the lyrics with co-writer Billy Falcon but still fretted about landing the perfect title.

“Billy said, ‘I Wrote You a Song’ and I was like, ‘Ah!.’ The simplest thing you could possibly say.”

Bon Jovi salutes The Beatles’ ‘A Day in the Life’

The dozen songs on “Forever” balance between ballads and barroom stompers. “Seeds” is one of the most memorable for its hook and fantastical ending that pays homage to The Beatles’ “A Day in the Life.”

Bon Jovi says he was inspired to write the song while looking out of the window of his Manhattan apartment and watching the people wandering around in a park. “There are 100 stories happening right now and these people don’t even know that their stories are intersecting at this moment,” he remembers thinking at the time.

He credits his “current self-help way” of “trying to get back to joy” for inspiring the image of seeds “trying to find our place in the weeds.”

The song rockets to a swirling strings-and-drums climax that is reminiscent of The Beatles’ ingenious concoction that caps their “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album. “Seeds” wraps with a sustained chord, similar to the one that famously closes “A Day in the Life.”

“From inception, I knew what I wanted (with the song) and it was absolutely ‘A Day in the Life,’” Bon Jovi says. He enlisted noted composer David Campbell to arrange the strings.

“I full-on wanted the George Martin, Beatles-esque climb. And I think we achieved it,” Bon Jovi says.

Jon Bon Jovi is hardly a 'Hollow Man'

The closing song on “Forever,” the contemplative “Hollow Man,” might concern fans with its ruminative lyrics over mournful slide guitar.

“What do you sing when the song’s been sung?/Who do you fight when the war is won?/What do you write when the book is done?” Bon Jovi wonders, then later in the song, “How does it work when the words don’t come?”

It might sound like a declaration of defeat, but Bon Jovi isn’t swaggering into the sunset.

Touring remains uncertain because of his self-mandate that his voice is fit enough to perform a 2 ½-hour concert four nights a week. But he’s continuing to rebuild his vocal strength and maintain his optimism.

“Every day,” Bon Jovi says, “I work at it.”

This Is a Film About the Black Keys

The Black Keys and managers Irving Azoff and Steve Moir have parted ways after the sudden and thoroughly publicized cancellation of the band’s North American arena tour previously scheduled for the fall.

A rep for Azoff confirmed the split to Variety late Thursday, calling it an “amicable parting”; a rep for the group did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The news was first reported by the New York Times.

However, they are hardly the only act dealing with the harsh realities of touring in 2024. While live-entertainment companies have reported record revenues in the two years since pandemic restrictions fully lifted and top tours continue to do extremely well, that rush has clearly cooled off for artists below the very top tiers. 2023 may come to be regarded as a watershed year, with Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Drake, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and others thundering across North America. But ticket prices have also reached a new peak, and combined with the bad press the industry has received amid the Justice Department’s recently filed but long-expected antitrust lawsuit against Ticketmaster owner Live Nation, many fans have apparently decided to be more selective with their spending.

MisterWives Rock Out With Charlotte Sands on ‘Other Side,’ Announces 20-Date Tour

By Tomás Mier

MisterWives ‘ album Nosebleeds is getting a second life! On Friday, the band released a reimagined, rockier version of the album’s track “Other Side,” featuring Charlotte Sands . They also celebrate the arrival of new music by announcing their fall Just For One Night tour.

Frontwoman Mandy Lee describes “Other Side” as a song about dealing with the “unhealthy side effects” of comparison and overcoming them to experience gratitude. “That’s exactly how we are feeling now,” she says. The track is set to be featured on Nosebleeds: Encore , which will hear the band reworking each song on the album with a new guest.

For her part, Sands says she’s always been a “huge fan” of the “Reflections” indie pop band and was honored to join Lee on the song. “Watching her energy on stage genuinely makes me a better performer. They have so much dynamic sonically and continue to make the best music of their careers, which they then somehow follow up with even better music,” Sands says. “I’m forever impressed and so incredibly lucky for the opportunity to work with them.”

Attack in Moscow: What role does the band Picnic play?

A t least 137 people have been killed in the attack on the "Crocus City Hall" in Moscow. The Russian rock band, Picnic, was due to perform on stage on Friday. What does their performance have to do with the attack? On the evening of Friday March 22, at around 8 p.m. local time, the Moscow concert venue, Crocus City Hall, became the scene of a bloody attack -- the exact background of which is still the subject of speculation. At least 137 were killed in the massacre, while many others are in critical condition. They were all awaiting a concert by the Russian rock band Picnic, which was due to start at 9 p.m.

'Wash yourself with your own blood'

Russia has been in a state of shock ever since. While the whole world is expressing its sympathy, rumors and false information are doing the rounds. Four suspects have been brought before a court in the Russian capital. The four Tajiks were formally accused of involvement in a terrorist attack by the Basmanny district court on Sunday evening. They face possible life imprisonment. At the same time, people are wondering why the terrorists chose this particular event. Was the attack also aimed at the band Picnic?

"Fear nothing, fear nothing -- no fire, no ringing shadow. You are no longer a rosy child. Wash yourself with your own blood in the morning. And shake the blossoming day." These are some of the lyrics of Picnic's new song, which was released on March 7 on the band's YouTube channel.

Those lines sound almost prophetic, especially now in Russia. A message posted on the band's website reads, "We express our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the victims. We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. We are deeply shocked by this terrible tragedy and mourn with you." The band's musicians were unharmed because they were able to hide in the dressing room.

Picnic is one of the veterans of the Russian music scene, with origins in progressive rock. Founded in 1978 in St. Petersburg, which was still called Leningrad then, the band initially called itself Orion before changing its name to Picnic in 1981. Both monikers go back to the typical Soviet rock scene trick of choosing names that sound Western but cannot be banned.

In the 1980s, however, Picnic ended up on the list of bands that were denied major public appearances. The musicians and their audience therefore lived out their love for role models such as Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones in rock clubs, sometimes underground. Singer and songwriter Edmund Shklyarsky has been the band leader since 1982. The son of a renowned scientist and a concert pianist, Shklyarsky attaches great importance to his Polish roots and his Catholic faith. From an early age, his sources of inspiration were not only the Rolling Stones and The Animals, but also Russian avant-garde poetry.

Picnic members are considered war supporters

In May 2023, Russian writer and nationalist activist Zakhar Prilepin praised the band's leader. According to Prilepin, Shklyarsky actively supported the "special operation" in Ukraine, among others through monetary donations. Prelepin further presumed that this was the "normal position of a Russian man and a Russian musician" -- a statement that has neither been denied nor confirmed by the members of Picnic.

Their being booked to perform in venue as renowned as the Crocus City Hall in Moscow can be seen as proof of the band's loyalty to the Russian state -- which had demanded a clear commitment from the country's rock and pop scene, especially when the war against Ukraine began. Musicians and bands who positioned themselves against the war -- including Russian stars such as Boris Grebenshchikov (Aquarium), Yuri Shevchuk (DDT) and Zemfira -- had to leave the country and suffered career setbacks. Russian pop diva Alla Pugacheva has also sharply criticized the Putin regime from abroad.

On the other hand, stars loyal to the regime are rewarded with lucrative performances and awards. The approximately 6,200 tickets for the Picnic concert on March 22 were almost sold out, as was the planned second gig on Saturday. Ticket prices ranged from E100 to E300 and the band was to be accompanied by a symphony orchestra and a "spectacular stage and light show," at least according to advertising.

Even before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Picnic was added to the list of artists unwelcome in Ukraine. The reason for this was the band's repeated performances on the occupied Crimean peninsula, including in Sevastopol.

The day after the tragedy, numerous interview requests, including from DW, were met with nothing but expressions of grief and shock. On Sunday, March 24, Edmund Shklyarsky released a video message. "I would like to express my condolences to all the victims and relatives of this terrible and senseless tragedy," he said, adding that no words have yet been invented that could resurrect people and comfort their fellow human beings.

Whether there's any special significance in the terrorists' choice to attack a concert by this particular band remains a matter of speculation -- as does the question of whether Crocus City Hall plays any special role as the target of the carnage.

A concert venue of superlatives

Crocus City Hall is a state-of-the-art concert hall on the grounds of an exhibition complex and is probably the most prestigious stage in Moscow among musicians. With an audience capacity of 5,000 to 10,000 people, it is much larger than a traditional concert hall and only slightly smaller than a soccer stadium. In short, a superlative venue in Moscow with no competitors.

Completed in 2009, Crocus, as it is known for short, quickly became one of Russia's most important concert halls. Located some 20 kilometers from the Kremlin, the venue can be reached within 30 minutes from the city center, depending on Moscow's notorious traffic congestions. It's faster for residents of the affluent suburbs in the west of the city, who prefer to attend the concerts there.

The excellent public transport links could have been an argument for the terrorists to choose Crocus City Hall for their attack. In addition, security precautions on the outskirts of the city are not as strict as in the center of Moscow.

Cultural events canceled in Russia

The concert hall belongs to the group of companies owned by the Azerbaijani-Russian construction tycoon and oligarch Aras Agalarov and his son Emin, a businessman and singer. There were rumors when the Crocus opened that Aras Agalarov had built his son a stage.

In recent years, however, Emin Agalarov has put his pop career on hold and concentrated primarily on the development and marketing of Crocus City Hall. Over the years, internationally renowned bands have performed here: Scorpions, Smokie, Pet Shop Boys, Nazareth and A-ha, as well as Sting, Elton John, Thomas Anders, Vanessa May and many others. In 2013, Donald Trump even strayed onto the stage, as a special guest at the final of the Miss Universe competition. But those days of cosmopolitanism are long gone.

A look at the program at Crocus City Hall gives a good insight into the sensitivities of Russian society, which oscillates between denial of reality and resignation: Concerts by regime-compliant musicians alternate with entertainment blockbusters such as Japanese drum shows or women's stand-up comedy. Now all major events have been canceled, not only in the damaged Crocus City Hall, but throughout Russia. Theaters, cinemas and museums will remain closed for the time being.
