Sherry Triangle Tour with a Certified Sherry Educator

Our Sherry Triangle tour is an immersive journey into the only region in the world where sherry wines are produced. This magical sherry region in Spain is in the province of Cadiz and it is formed by three towns. Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlucar de Barrameda.

With this 3-day sherry triangle tour you will discover the three sherry towns through their best sherry wines, sherry bodegas and sherry winemakers.

The itinerary has been carefully designed by a certified sherry educator , who will also be your personal guide throughout the tour.

Our recommended base for our 3-day sherry triangle tour is Jerez de la Frontera, the sherry capital. Jerez de la Frontera has not only the best bodegas in the Sherry Triangle but also the best hotel . The impeccable and exquisite Casa Palacio María Luisa .

Day 1: El Puerto de Santa María

On the first day of our immersive sherry tour, we will focus on the town of El Puerto de Santa María. There we will learn about the so-called almacenistas. These small sherry producers play a key role in the making and ageing of artisanal, limited edition sherry wines.

Sherry casks in a small sherry bodega in the sherry triangle

El Puerto is halfway along the bay of Cadiz and this will show up in our first sherry tasting . The proximity of the town to the Atlantic Ocean influences its dry sherries in a very distinctive way. The name of these particular sherries from El Puerto de Santa María is “ puerto finos ” and we will taste a great selection of them in the premises of a selected almacenista.

Our visit to El Puerto will also take us to a selected family-owned and family-run sherry bodega. There we will learn what a bodega is in Spain and the particular architecture that bodegas have in the Sherry Triangle.

Sherry Bodega buildings in El Puerto de Santa Maria

Our second sherry tasting of the day will introduce us to the oxidative sherry wine types (olorosos and amontillados) and also to sweet sherry (cream and pedro ximenez).

Then our driver will take us to a selected sherry vineyard, where we will meet the owner. An experienced sherry vigneron, with whom we will learn about the grapes, the vines, the soil and the weather that make sherry so unique.

This first vineyard we will visit in our 3-day sherry tour is right in the middle of pago Macharnudo . An iconic section of the sherry triangle, famous for its magnificent and chalky albariza soil .

The albariza of Macharnudo is very rich in calcium carbonate and ideal for the growth and maturation of palomino grapes . This is by far the most common grape variety in the sherry triangle after moscatel and pedro ximenez .

Vineyard in the Sherry Triangle

After our introduction to sherry viticulture , we will have a tasting of the sherries that this vigneron makes only for him and his family . For this artisanal sherry, he uses only palomino grapes carefully harvested from his oldest vines ( 70 year old ).

Then we will enjoy a homemade lunch in the vineyard and a farewell sherry cocktail . The use of fortified wines is more and more common amongst selected mixologists from different parts of the world. So we will learn about the versatility of sherry wine for the preparation and enjoyment of a great cocktail.

Day 2: Jerez de la Frontera

On the second day of our sherry triangle tour we will focus on sherry from Jerez de la Frontera .

We will start our Jerez de la Frontera Sherry Bodegas discovery journey by visiting an artisanal one with a member of the family who owns it.

In this first Jerez sherry bodega we will have an introduction to the concept of “en rama” sherry , while we do a vertical tasting of some excellent dry types.

unfiltered sherry poured straight from the cask

This will allow us to learn and taste how dry sherries from Jerez (Jerez finos) evolve in the solera-criadera ageing system . Then we will do a tasting of the artisanal, en rama, oxidative sherries aged in this bodega: amontillado, palo cortado and oloroso.

From this sherry bodega, our driver will take us to a different one, specialised in very old rare sherries (VORS) and also in jerez brandy . There we will taste some of the oldest and best kept sherries from Jerez straight from the cask.

We will also have an introduction to jerez brandy in our tour and the corresponding jerez brandy tasting.

Along these sherry and Jerez brandy tastings, we will learn some theory about the art of pairing food and Sherry . Then we will put this theory into practice by having a wonderful lunch in a local restaurant in Jerez specialised in food and sherry pairings.

There’s an ideal sherry for each type of food . During lunch, we will gain an understanding of how different sherries can boost the flavours of different foods, creating fabulous pairings. This is the reason why sherries are becoming so popular amongst worldwide known chefs these days.

Day 3: Sanlucar de Barrameda

On the third day of our sherry triangle tour we will travel to Sanlucar de Barrameda.

Upon arrival we will visit a private vineyard, located in a different section of the sherry triangle, closer to the Atlantic Ocean.

Vineyard landscape in the sherry triangle

In Sanlucar we will taste not only a great selection of exquisite manzanillas , but also some excellent white wines made with palomino grapes .

This will offer us an understanding of how sherry wines and manzanillas differ from white wine made with the same grapes. This is due to their fortified condition and to their ageing in american oak sherry casks in the solera criadera system.

After our exploration of the vineyards of Sanlucar and our first tastings of the day, our driver will take us to Sanlucar old town. There we will visit a small sherry bodega where a local oenologist makes fabulous manzanillas and excellent oxidative sherries.

A glass of Manzanilla from the sherry triangle

Together with him we will learn the differences between finos from El Puerto, finos from Jerez and Manzanillas . Also we will understand how oxidative sherries from Jerez are different from the ones produced in Sanlucar and in El Puerto de Santa María .

This will be during a final tasting of sherries and manzanillas that our local oenologist will take directly from selected casks .

Our 3-day sherry triangle tour will finish with a farewell lunch in a traditional local restaurant in the fishing quarters of Sanlucar. There we will enjoy a great selection of fish and seafood recipes paired with different manzanillas. During lunch we will have a great opportunity to review all the knowledge of the sherry triangle, of its sherry wines and of its sherry bodegas acquired through this wine tour of Andalusia.

Our sherry tours have been featured in the international press as some of the best sherry tours in Jerez, Spain.

This is a suggested sherry triangle tour that we have carefully curated for those wine lovers wishing to gain a deep understanding of Sherry. It includes your personal certified Sherry Educator throughout the tour, private transportation with a dedicated driver, all private visits, tastings, lunches and full accommodation in the best hotel in Jerez.

However we can customise it for you if you wish. We are specialists in custom tours of Andalusia.

Also, we can add more activities if you wish and even extend it. You may want to enjoy Jerez by night by taking a tapas tour through its iconic tabancos and maybe also discover the unique flamenco music scene of the city.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word, Sherry? Something that is sweet and dark? Some drink that shows up only on exclusive occasions before returning to the confines of the drinks cabinet, till next time.

Let’s get into it. Sherry is a Spanish fortified wine with more than 3,000 years of rich tradition to accompany. Wine when added to a distilled spirit (i.e. brandy) becomes a Sherry.

The word itself is an Anglicization of the Spanish word Xeres. The exclusivity of Sherry can be gauge from its protected designation of origin status in Europe. All the Sherry wines must legally be from the geographical region of Andalucía known, also known as the Sherry Triangle. Additionally, the words Jerez / Xérès / Sherry are registered by Spanish wine producers and anyone using them outside the production area will face legal consequences.

The thin layer of yeast placed on top of the sherry wines barrel is called Flor, it splits all wines produced by the Sherry Triangle into two principal categories.

The process starts with fermenting the must, extracted from the white grapes produced in Southwestern Spain. This is achieved by adding  yeasts or pie de cuba.T his results in a young wine with an approximate 13.5% alcohol. Additionally, right after the fermentation, flor will start developing on this young wine. Flor is a thin layer of yeast on top of the sherry wine barrels. This waxy foam of layer protects the wine from air exposure and keeps the character of the Sherry intact. After that, a carefully quantified selection is made to fortify the wine by adding a distilled spirit to it.

Oxidative Sherry

This Sherry is brewed partially or entirely without flor i.e. Amontillado and Oloroso.

In recent years a lot of research has been put in place to decode the microbiology of sherry wine making and the impact of a flor veil on top of the Sherry wine barrels. All of this is because of the fame attained by the biologically aged Sherries.

Wine aficionados opine that to cherish the real character and blossoming taste of this wonderfully idiosyncratic wine; it’s essential to serve it with the right kind of savory food.

3 Types Of Sherries To Try.

“If it swims, serve Fino; if it flies, serve Amontillado; if it runs, serve Oloroso”

Jeremy Rockett, Marketing Director of González Byass – Spain’s most well-known sherry bodegas.

Fino in the Spanish language means refined. It is traditionally the driest and also the palest type of Sherry. It is consumed soon after the bottle is opened because air can cause them to lose their characteristic flavor in a matter of hours.

It is said by wine aficionados that no wine blends that well with savory food than a properly aged Fino Sherry. For that very reason, an ice-cold Fino is a natural companion of Tapas (wide variety of Spanish appetizers)

That’s why the cuisines and wines of Andalucía have developed a very close bond over the centuries.

AMONTILLADO

Amontillado is a type of Sherry that after being aged under flor is then exposed to oxygen. It results in a Sherry that is darker in color than Fino, but is comparatively lighter than Oloroso.

Amontillado is naturally dry by nature. Although, occasionally sold with medium to light sweeteners. The sweetened Sherry cannot be labeled as Amontillado.

This type of Sherry is generally served chilled and mostly with food like chicken or rabbit. Traditionally, it is served with a thin gravy soup.

Oloroso in Spanish means scented is a type of Sherry that’s been aged for a longer period of time than Fino or Amontillado resulting in a richly blended and darker wine containing alcohol levels between 18 to 20%.

Oloroso is not for the weak hearted as they are the most alcoholic Sherries. They are also dry by nature. Just like Amontillado, more often than not Olorosos are served in a sweetened form known as Cream Sherry. However, these sweetened versions cannot be labeled Oloroso.

THE BEST BODEGAS IN JEREZ

Oxford defines bodega as a cellar or shop selling wine and food, especially in a Spanish-speaking country or area.

BODEGAS TRADICION - website

Cozy, friendly and quintessentially Spanish. Bodegas Tradicion prides itself in bottling only the most refined and fully-aged wines capable of giving sensory pleasures to its Winers and Diners.

The Bodegas Tradicion guarantees that their wines include no artificiality of chill-filtration, sulphites, cooked-wine, cold stabilization or caramel while maturing and bottling their signature wines.

The beauty of their Sherries is that they taste as good alone as they do with the right kind of dishes.

LUSTAU - website

Lustau’s origin goes way back to 1896. When, Don José Ruiz-Berdejo started operating a winery in his backyard to sell them to the bigger houses that bottled and exported the wines.

In the 19th century founder’s son-in-law, Don Emilio Lustau Ortega started expanding the business and the range of wines produced. Later in 1990, the Lustao Company was sold to Luis Caballero. That sale further allowed the company to grow and allowed it purchase six bodega buildings which were restored in 2001 and 2003 and now house all of the Lustau Wines.

Lustau markets as many as 40 different wines found within 8 categories and ranges. They are particularly famous in foreign markets i.e. the USA.

SANDEMAN - website

Despite its increasing popularity, experts believe that wine tourism movement is only operating at 20% of its projected potential and can easily be double in the near future. It can be said that SANDEMAN is playing its significant role even in that 20% wine tourism.

A crucial factor escalating the movement is wine roads, through wine-producing regions and through the major spring event of Open Cellars which attracts millions of tourists.

These Sherry Wine Tours in Jerez offers an opportunity to see how and where wine is made and can also spot the difference by tasting it at its source.

These tours also offer visitors an opportunity to get to know about the traditions and culture blended into wine making and the country life.

One can say that while the primary focus of the tourists is on tasting sensuous Sherries they also, subconsciously discover the uniqueness and scenic locales of Spain.

To conclude proverbially in Spanish,

Friends and wine should be old.

My favorite sherry tours and wine tastings in the Cádiz and Jerez area

Dutch

Latest update: 7 May 2024

The Cadiz province is the sherry region of Spain. The drink is made and drunk here in abundance. Only sherry made in this region may bear the name sherry. So you should definitely try a sherry tour in the Cádiz and Jerez de la Frontera area, or at the very least visit a sherry bodega for a quick nip. And if you’re not into sherry, you can opt for a regular wine tasting too.

What do you want to know more about?

Welcome to the Sherry Triangle!

The only region where the original sherry is produced is Cádiz in Spain. The so-called sherry triangle consists of the area between Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlucar de Barrameda , and El Puerto de Santa María . There are dozens of sherry bodegas here. Many of them are open to visitors. At some, you can simply stop by and order sherry at the bar. At others, you can join a sherry tour or sherry tasting. If you want to be sure of a spot, please make a reservation!

It’s fun to compare the different sherries. I didn’t know anything about the drink before I got to the region, so I didn’t even know that there were several types of sherry. You can choose from, for example, manzanilla, fino, amontillado, oloroso, cream and Pedro Ximénez. And they all taste different. Manzanilla and fino are not my taste at all (they remind me of methyl alcohol, which is not a good sign), but I like the sweet cream sherry.

Sherry tours in the Cádiz region

So if you are in the Cádiz and Jerez de la Frontera region, try arranging a sherry tour. You can go to various places for a sherry tour and tasting. I want to give you a few options here, but please know that there are many more!

Sherry tour: Bodegas Osborne – El Puerto de Santa María

The sherry tours at Bodegas Osborne in El Puerto de Santa María are a well-oiled machine. There are tours in several languages almost every day. The grounds of Bodegas Osborne are beautiful, with a lovely courtyard and a well-maintained garden.

The tour starts in the wine cellar, where the guide explains the production process and the history of the sherry house. The sherry tour of Bodegas Osborne takes about an hour, and you get to taste four sherries. You can taste more sherry if you opt for a VIP or premium tour.

Sherry tour: Bodega Manuel Aragón – Chiclana de la Frontera

Bodega Manual Aragón is the very first sherry bodega that I visited. And it is also the most fun. I like it because it is a small bodega with much personal attention. It will probably be different in the summer months, but my tour is just the two of us, and my parents have a tour with only one other couple a month later. So it feels cozy and friendly, and as if the guide has all the time in the world for just you.

I have a Spanish-language guide, so I also downloaded the app with English text and audio. We make it work together—with my holiday-level Spanish, the explanation in the app, and lots of pointing and laughing. I get to see the vineyard and storage, and then taste the sherries and eat some tapas in the garden. What a wonderful afternoon!

Sherry tour: Tío Pepe – Jerez de la Frontera

Bodegas Gonzáles-Byass makes the Tío Pepe sherry. You may have seen the symbol along the highways: a little man with a red jacket and hat. You may have also noticed the symbol of Osborne: the bull. But let’s stick to Tío here. Tió means uncle, and Tío Pepe is the uncle of founder Manual Maria González. Robert Byass was his business partner.

Bodegas Gonzáles-Byass little train tour sherry

Bodegas Gonzáles-Byass is one of the largest and most famous sherry houses. The tour is pretty popular and touristy: we are even driven over the site by a little train. This is OK for a first introduction to sherry, but it’s not the most personal experience. We make several stops in the bodega and look at the mixing system of the barrels, among other things. There are three rows of barrels on top of each other, and one-third of the contents are taken out and replaced with the contents of the barrel above.

I taste two sherries in the tasting room, but it’s possible to get a more extensive sherry tasting. You can make reservations online in advance at this sherry house in Jerez de la Frontera.

Wine tasting in the Cádiz region

The wines from Cádiz are perhaps a bit overshadowed by the sherry wines. A shame because there are quite a few excellent wineries in this part of Andalusia. I have done two wine tastings in this part of Andalucia. One in La Ina and one in Jerez de la Frontera.

Wine tasting: Miguel Domecq – La Ina

The Miguel Domecq winery is a fifteen-minute drive from Jerez de la Frontera. The last part is on a quiet country road with hills and vineyards on both sides. And then suddenly, the hypermodern winery in La Ina pops up. With our guide, we check out the vineyard, the storage, and the production area, and of course, we end the tour with a wine tasting.

The wine tasting takes place in a small private tasting room. We first see a film about the winery and then taste four wines. We are excited about the Alhocen Chardonnay and take some bottles home. Here too, you can expand your tasting with extra snacks.

After the tasting, make sure you drive a little further up the hills before you leave. You’ll get to see the ruins of watchtower Torre de Cera and even more vineyards.

Miguel Domecq vineyard

Wine tasting: Bodegas Luis Pérez – Jerez de la Frontera

If you order a local wine at a restaurant in Cádiz, you will probably get one from Bodegas Luis Pérez. Especially the red Garum is very popular. So that’s already a good reason to visit this winery. Around the bodega are the vineyards on the rolling hills of Jerez de la Frontera. Unfortunately, there were strong winds during my visit, so I mainly stayed inside at the long table in the tasting room. In a corner, there are lovely sofas between books and a fireplace. What a lovely spot.

I happened to get the tour from a Dutch guide. Caroline has lived in the region for years and has worked at several wineries, so you can count on getting a lot of information during this wine tour. And lots of wine: you can taste four.

Jerez Sherry Tasting Tours – A Sweet and Sour Sip of Spain

Jerez Sherry Tasting Tours – A Sweet and Sour Sip of Spain

When I think of sherry, I think of sour old British women, sipping small glasses of sherry at the country club. I have no idea if this is correct but I do know sherry in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, is quite different. Jerez is the birthplace of sherry wine and the hearth of Spain’s sherry triangle. I decided to learn a bit more and joined one of the best Jerez sherry tasting tours and had a blast sherry tasting in Jerez.

As one of the top things to do in Jerez, sherry tasting is a must. I show you what to look out for when booking a sherry tasting tour and how to arrange it. Read on to see what you can expect when you go sherry tasting in Jerez!

I paid for everything in full myself. I was not paid or sponsored. All my opinions and experiences are my own.

Jerez de la Frontera

I had so much fun the first time I went to Andalusia , Spain, I knew I wanted to come back. My second road trip around southern Spain , had to include Jerez. I heard so many amazing things about this city, I decided to base myself here for 3 days. I rented a great apartment and explored Jerez and the region.

Jerez is short for Jerez de la Frontera. Although it is the largest city in the Cadiz province, it felt more like a big village. Jerez de la Frontera has a lot to offer. For example, the Atlantic Ocean is only 12 km (7,5 miles) away and the city is surrounded by vineyards and nature.

I really enjoyed my time in Jerez. Here are some quick ideas for things to do in Jerez de la Frontera:

  • See a horse show at the famous Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art
  • Enjoy a Flamenco show at one of Jerez’s many tabernas and tabancos
  • Visit the Alcazar of Jerez and learn about the history
  • Admire the Cathedral of Jerez and visit the Church of San Miquel
  • Enjoy Jerez by strolling around, eating tapas or drink sherry

Or… Learn about sherry and join one of the many sherry tours in Jerez. And guess what? That is what I did.

Jerez Sherry Wine

Sherry wine is as old as the Phoenicians. Early settlement around 1100 BC show the art of wine making in the region. Sherry wine is made with white grapes that grow in the Sherry Triangle around Jerez de la Frontera.

After the Romans and the Moors who made brandy and fortified wines, the British really took over the sherry making in Jerez.

The people of England really liked the sherry wine from Jerez and many of the bodegas and famous sherry brands in modern days, have British heritage.

Is it Sherry if it doesn’t come from Jerez?

No, then it is not sherry! The name sherry is solely reserved for the wine produced with specific grapes from the Sherry Triangle around Jerez. It is protected by the name D.O. (Denominación de Origen): D.O. Jerez-Xeres-Sherry. Now that is a whole mouth full.

But what does it taste like? I wondered the exact same thing and decided to take a Jerez sherry tour to find out!

Jerez Sherry Tours

Similar to Alhambra tours in Granada or Alcazar tours in Seville, it is not hard to find a sherry tour in Jerez. Maybe it is THE reason for you to come to the city and experience a Jerez sherry tour!

Jerez holds many bodegas and producers of sherry wine. Each of these bodegas opens up to the public at certain times and under certain conditions. They all include the history of the sherry wine from Jerez de la Frontera and a tour of the bodega.

Of course, a sherry tasting to finish the tour is mandatory!

Sherry Tasting in Jerez

When you want to experience the Jerez sherry tasting, you can visit a local tabanco and order a few glasses of sherry wine. But a visit to the sherry bodega and a Jerez sherry tour will give you extensive information about the grapes they use to make sherry and to process of making sherry wine.

On the Jerez sherry tours, you’ll get to touch the Palomino grapes and you will learn the differences between a sherry Fino and Manzanilla or Amontillado and Oloroso.

Depending on which sherry tasting tour you’ve booked, it usually included at least 2 tastings of sherry. But the good thing about the Jerez sherry tours is the fact that sherry is abundant at the bodegas so you can always order more!

Gonzalez Byass Jerez Sherry Tour

During my visit to Jerez, I knew I just had to try one of the sherry tasting tours. As Jerez was on lockdown for one of its many public holidays , I didn’t have much choice. I learned that the Gonzalez Byass Bodega in Jerez was open for sherry tours on my preferred day, so I decided to join one of their sherry tours.

Gonzalez Byass in Jerez de la Frontera is one of the oldest and largest sherry bodegas in the city. It is located next to the Cathedral of Jerez. I showed up for the English sherry tour and had a great time touring the bodega.

Tio Pepe Sherry tour from Gonzalez Byass Bodega

Tio Pepe is the most famous sherry from the Gonzales Byass Bodega in Jerez. This part is a bit confusing, as many people in the world know Tio Pepe Sherry but may have never heard about Gonzales Byass.

You can find the Gonzalez Byass Jerez bodega where you can start your Tio Pepe sherry tour at: Calle de Manuel María González, 12, 11403 Jerez de la Frontera. For more info, prices and bookings click here .

The Gonzalez Byass Jerez sherry tour is given in 3 languages, you can choose for the Spanish tour (3x a day), a Germany tour (2x a day) or the English tour (3x a day).

After a warm welcome we toured the grounds of the bodega, learning about sherry making and the history of Gonzales Byass and the origin of the Tio Pepe sherry.

Sherry Wine barrels in Jerez de la Frontera Spain showing the Gonzalez Byass Sherry during a Sherry Tour in Jerez

I was amazed at how big the bodega was. We even had to take a little train to visit the different bodegas and the whole area was covered with beautiful tropic plants and trees and cute little nooks and streets. It felt like a city within the city.

After meeting uncle Pepe (Tio Pepe), we continued through the bodega and wandered around the ancient barrels where famous visitors written their names on the barrels. It was a sport to spot the oldest signature or most famous person on the immense wooden barrels.

The sherry tour is full of fun and quirky details, which I won’t spoil for you. Just discover it for yourself!

My favorite Jerez Sherry

After all that history and learning about sherry, I was thirsty to try some myself. I booked the sherry tour with a small tasting of tapas and 2 sherry wines included (I paid €18). We were taken to a restaurant like establishment were we were served our sherries and could stay as long as we wanted.

I had the Fino sherry for tasting and a Manzanilla. But I was curious for the sweeter ones and wanted to try those too. I paid an extra €2 and got a 3 rd glass of sherry for tasting.

I had a Sherry Dulce and felt my sweet tooth was nourished!

Girl, that was sweet! It was delicious but after 3 glasses of sherry, I can’t remember much anymore. It was time to return to my Jerez apartment and sleep it off.

Drunk after notes about sherry

As I was walking home in the hot Jerez late afternoon, the sun was dipping behind the Cathedral of Jerez. The statue of Tio Pepe greeted me and I contemplated about the tour.

I really liked that you could see the whole bodega and see how much hard work and dedication of the family Gonzalez Byass went into building the brand. Up front, I figured only 2 glasses of sherry tasting doesn’t really give you a good insight into what sherry is.

But for a Jerez sherry tour, 2 glasses are more than enough. You can always visit a tabanco and order some more when you go out at night.

Book your own Jerez Sherry Tasting Tour?

It is really easy to just show up in Jerez, knock on the door of one or more of the sherry bodegas in the city and book a sherry tasting tour in Jerez. If you have little time and want to avoid the risk of the tour being completed, book your tour in advance.

The 7 Best Sherry Bodegas in Jerez de la Frontera

Sherry might be Spain’s worst-kept secret.

It’s not one of those secret wine gems that only the trendiest sommeliers know about (looking at you, Georgian wine). But I’ll admit, when most people think of sherry, they think of their granny.

Tiny glasses of sickly sweet, treacly booze… that’s the image most people have of sherry wines.

But what those people don’t know is that the good stuff is a secret. Sherry wines are some of the best in Spain, and some of my favourite wines in the world! And the best sherries come from Jerez de la Frontera.

This sleepy town is quintessentially Spanish. It’s got tapas, flamenco, siesta, and of course, vino . So if you’re visiting Jerez, why not check out some of the best bodegas in town? These wineries are the perfect place to get to know Spain’s best-kept wines.

sherry wines in a bodega in Jerez

What is Sherry Wine?

“Sherry” doesn’t refer to a particular grape (or the name of the woman who makes it). No. Sherry is a place . In Spanish, it’s Jerez—a triangle of wine-making land between three towns in Andalusia. And the largest and most important of those towns is Jerez de la Frontera ; the ancestral home of sherry wines!

Ask most winemakers, and they’ll say their wine is made in the vineyard. But the magic of sherry takes place in the winery! These are the great resting places of the vinos de jerez , where the wine ages in barrels for years before release.

The wineries smell of old barrels, old wine, and the earth beneath your feet. (The floor is covered in soil and sand to keep the humidity high). Here, the sherries are mixed and raised under the watchful gaze of the cellarmaster, in a complicated system called “fractional blending”; of blending old wine with new, year after year.

If you want to learn more, you can check out my ultimate guide to sherry wine. But if you want to get a real feel for sherry, why not head to where it’s made?

These wineries are where the story of sherry is told, and where you can drink the product of all that careful work! Here are my favourite sherry bodegas to visit in Jerez.

Once you’ve planned your visits, you might also want to check out my tips on where to eat in Jerez !

The 7 Best Sherry Wineries in Jerez

winding streets in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain.

González Byass

If you’re new to sherry wines, González Byass is not a bad place to start your journey. This is the producer of arguably the most famous wine of the region: the iconic Tío Pepe .

There are multiple tours every day, run by slick tour guides. It’s a well-polished machine, but a bit too on-rails for my liking. But the wines are good, and the tour is a good intro to sherry. I’d just recommend heading to another, smaller winery afterwards to get a more intimate experience!

Tours start at 16€, in English and Spanish.

  • Bodegas Gonzalez Byass: Calle Puerto, 19.

Bodegas Lustau

Lustau is one of my favourite sherry bodegas in Jerez. The wines are exceptional, and the vermouth is delicious! (Almost as good as my homemade vermouth ). Luckily, you get to try both on the tour of the winery!

It’s also a beautiful winery: over 100 years old and counting. The tour snakes through the cathedral-like barrel rooms, with tastings as you go.

Tours are in English and Spanish, starting at 18€ for the basic tour and tasting.

  • Bodegas Lustau: Calle Arcos, 53.

Bodegas Díez Mérito

You’ll likely be the only ones on the tour at Díez Mérito . It’s not that the wines are bad, in my opinion they’re the most delicious in Jerez! It’s just that it’s fairly off the beaten path.

This is an 18th-century winery, with gorgeous architecture and orange tree patios. You’ll taste a variety of the bodega’s premium sherries, and get a personal tour from a family member or family-friend!

Tours are available in English and Spanish, starting at 12€ per person.

  • Bodegas Diez Merito: Calle Diego Fernández Herrera, 10.

sherry barrels

Bodegas Tradición

As the name implies, Tradición is one of the oldest and most traditional sherry bodega s in Jerez. In fact, it goes all the way back to 1650! That’s old .

In keeping with traditional themes, there’s not much modern wine-making technology here. No modern additives sourced from a lab, no high-tech stabilisation… as close to 17th century sherry as possible!

Tours are in Spanish, English, and German, for 35€ per person. It’s more expensive than the other bodegas on this list, but you get to try much older wines from their collection. You also get a guided tour of their extensive art collection thrown in!

  • Bodegas Tradición : Calle Cordobeses, 3.

Bodegas Fundador

Since 1730, Fundador has been producing some of the most sought-after sherries in Jerez. The winery complex itself is the oldest in town, so it’s worth the visit just to get a close-up look at the architecture.

Tours are in English and Spanish. Tastings alone start at 9€, with tours + tastings from 10€. If you’re into this sort of thong, you van also do a chocolate and sherry pairing! (P.X. sherry and chocolate is one of the world’s greatest pairings, just try it).

  • Bodegas Fundador: Calle Puerta de Rota, s/n.

Bodegas Álvaro Domecq

Álvaro Domecq is a quality bodega , if a little less famous than the others. The Domecq name, however, is very famous in Jerez! This family has been involved with sherry for 300 years—as winemakers, landowners, and aristocrats. ( Infamous might be a better description, given the family’s odd and at times problematic history !).

Following in his family’s footsteps, Alvaro opened his bodega in the 1990s, taking over a 18th-century winery.

Tours are in English and Spanish, prices are subject to group size.

  • Bodegas Álvaro Domecq : Calle Madre de Dios , s/n.

Bodegas Dios Baco

With origins dating back to the 1730s, Dios Baco is another winery with a hell of a history! The Morilla family has owned this bodega since 1992, and chances are if you take a tour, one of the family will be leading you through the barrel rooms.

Tours are organised by emailing with the winery. When I visited, I did a tour for 18€ per person (including some generous light tapas).

  • Bodegas Dios Baco: Calle Huerta Pintada, s/n.

Seville Wine Tours to Jerez de la Frontera

Sherry (Vino de Jerez) is a fortified wine which is produced exclusively within a small area in the province of Cadiz known as the ‘Sherry Triangle’. The three towns which make up this area are Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa Maria and Sanlucar de Barrameda. Seville wine tours allow visitors to explore this sherry region as part of a group departing the Andaluz capital or under your own steam by taking a hire car, bus or train to Jerez.

Table of Contents

Dry sherries from Jerez are produced using Palomino grapes whilst Pedro Ximenez and Moscatel grapes are used for sweeter wines. Following fermentation the wines are fortified with brandy then aged in the solera system for a minimum period of three years. Once it has been bottled sherry can be consumed immediately as there are no further benefits to be gained from further ageing. Alternatively, it can also be stored for years in a cool and dry place without losing any of its flavour.

Taking a sherry wine tour in Jerez de la Frontera is more than just an opportunity to taste these local wines. It is a journey into the history of Andalucía going back more than 3000 years and travelling through the centuries as numerous civilisations occupied this rich land.

History of Sherry Wine

Wine was being produced in the Phoenician city of Gadir (modern-day Cadiz) as long ago as 1100 BC and 400 years later in their inland settlement of Xera (modern-day Jerez). To this day there are ancient archaeological sites in the region such as the Castillo de Doña Blanca in Puerto de Santa María which provide evidence of the vinicultural practices of this ancient civilisation. Wine production continued under the Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans who founded the town of Ceret from where they exported wines to every corner of their Empire.

Under Moorish rule the Roman town was renamed Sherish and alcohol was prohibited so the Caliph of Cordoba ordered the destruction of vineyards. However, this command was partly overturned when the locals claimed that the vineyards were a source of raisins which fed soldiers who were fighting the Holy War. Alcohol continued to be produced and was used as a valuable trading commodity as well as being used in medicines and perfumes.

Under the Reconquista, King Alfonso X of Castile reclaimed the city and it was renamed Xeres “de la Frontera” as it was located on the border between the Christian and Moorish kingdoms of Castile and Granada. Under Christian rule the wine industry thrived with a growing export trade passing through the nearby ports of Seville, Cádiz and Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

With Spanish colonial expansion into the Americas came unprecedented demand for sherry wines on ships bound for the New World. It is well documented that Christopher Columbus carried a large supply of Sherry on his 2nd voyage to the Americas which sailed out of El Puerto de Santa María. Ferdinand Magellan was also well stocked for his voyage around the world which left from Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

In 1587 Francis Drake attacked Spanish vessels in the Port of Cádiz which delayed the Spanish Armada planned invasion of England for more than a year. During these incursions an estimated 3000 barrels of Sherry were plundered and shipped back to England where the wine proved very popular. By the 17th and 18th centuries demand was such in England, Ireland and Scotland that wine merchants were established in Jerez de la Frontera. Some of these ‘Sherry Barons’ became household names whose bodegas stand to this day such as Harveys, Byass, Terry, Garvey, Sandeman and Osborne. Even today Great Britain remains the main export market for sherry produced in Jerez de la Frontera.

How to Get to Jerez de la Frontera

Jerez de la Frontera lies 90km south of Seville and is easily accessed by road in approximately one hour following the AP-4 from the city.

Sherry Bodegas in Jerez de la Frontera

Below we’ve listed many of the main wineries in Jerez with a short explanation of their tour and contact details. Tours will usually be arranged on request. Check their websites listed below for up to date information on times of tours in particular languages and entrance fees.

Bodegas Tío Pepe

Established: 1835 Address: c/ Manuel María Gonzalez, 12 Website: Bodegas Tío Pepe As producers of the world famous Tio Pepe sherry this is the most famous and most visited of the wineries (it is actually the 2nd most visited winery in the world). The novelty factor of their tour is a miniature train which transfers you around the complex. The tour begins at their most prestigious cellar called La Concha then takes you to a larger cellar where the alcohol smell is quite wonderful.

An audi-visual show tells the story of the company’s development and a visit to the barrel room where celebrities have signed their names in chalk is very interesting. It’s ironic to see Margaret Thatcher’s barrel next to Primo de Rivera, General Franco’s right hand man! And look out for the glass of wine and piece of cheese on the floor which is placed there every day for the cellar mouse. The tour ends with an opportunity to taste the sherry then you leave via the winery shop.

Bodegas Sandeman

Established: 1790 Address: c/ Pizarro, 10 Website: Bodegas Sandeman If you’re pushed for time in Jerez this is a good winery tour to select because it’s right next to the Royal School of Equestrian Art where the dancing horses show takes place. Therefore, you can walk from the horse show directly to the Sandeman tour and tasting. The tour takes you into several wineries for their different sherries including Fino and Oloroso then you get to see the bottling area and go for a tasting session.

Bodegas Álvaro Domecq

Established: 1730 Address: San Ildefonso, 3 Website: Bodegas Álvaro Domecq The is Jerez’s oldest cellar where a guided tour takes you through the winery’s history with a audio visual presentation and takes you into Bodega de la Luz where Spain’s first brandy, Fundador, was born. The tour naturally concludes with the best bit .. the tasting and the shop visit

Bodegas Harveys

Established: 1796 Address: c/ Pintor Muñoz Cebrián Website: Bodegas Harveys On this tour the guide explains the process of making and ageing Harvey’s sherries in one of their historical cellars along Calle Arcos where the world famous Bristol Cream brand was born. The tour culminates in the tasting of Harveys Bristol Cream in the 19th century Don Ramiro patio.

Bodegas Williams and Humbert

Bodegas Williams and Humbert Established: 1877 Address: Ctra. Nacional IV, Km.641.75 (Jerez-Puerto de Santa Maria)

A personal favourite purely because they produce Gran Duque de Alba brandy (my chosen brand). This is the largest bodega complex in Europe which has been producing some of Jerez’s finest wines for over 200 years. As well as a tour of their installations there is a horse exhibition on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Bodegas Garvey

Bodegas Garvey Established: 1776 Address: Ctra. Circunvalación, s/n A fascinating history of a young man from Dublin who settled in Jerez and sent small amounts of wine back to Ireland and England. His son developed the business as the Bodega de San Patricio which became the city’s largest for over 125 years occupying 30,000 square metres. He was the first to export fino from Jerez and in 1858 was responsible for exporting the first barrel of brandy which sailed from Cadiz for London. You can learn more about this fascinating story and the process of wine and brandy production on the Garvey tour. Full day wine tasting courses with lunch can be arranged.

Smaller Wineries in Jerez

All the above wineries offer general tours which are open to the public most days. These can get very busy during peak holiday periods. As an alternative you can arrange a Private Tour of their premises with tasting though this will obviously be far more expensive. A cheaper alternative is to go to one of the smaller such as Bodegas Tradición (Plaza Cordobeses, 3) which is less well known so attracts far fewer tourists.
