The Insatiable Hunger of BL Drama KinnPorsche

If KinnPorsche The Series could be governed by any concept, it would be Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, cycling through a desperation for safety, love, and freedom. In the Thai BL drama , Apo Nattawin Wattanagitiphat plays the fun-loving bartender-cum-bodyguard Porsche, alongside Mile Phakphum Romsaithong’s iPad-wielding mafia clan leader Kinn. Zooming in from Thailand, their smiles light up the screen; Apo sports white pants he paint-splattered himself, while Mile’s shirt buttons settle a divorce. Everyone is driven by hunger, for something, for somebody — and in KinnPorsche , the hunger is insatiable.

Adapted from the novel of the same name, the 14-episode Boys’ Love series has been one of Thailand’s hotly anticipated projects. “It’s a BL drama with a mafia theme,” Mile says via translation from co-star Bible, who plays Vegas in the series. “It’s actually the love story between the leadership of the [mafia] and his new bodyguard.” Hurtling us right into the action, the opening act crosscuts between two very different yet high octane circumstances: Porsche bartending and hooking up with a woman, and Kinn enduring a mafia shootout. “It’s a chaotic destiny that eventually becomes a beautiful mess,” Apo says, citing the show’s main theme as comedy.

In his 1943 journal paper, A Theory of Human Motivation , Abraham Maslow says that man lives by bread alone — but only when there is no bread to eat. When the thing you hunger for most is unattainable, higher aspirations are thrown out the window. Maslow goes on to ask the question: “What happens to man’s desires when there is plenty of bread and when his belly is chronically filled?” Kinn never needs to worry about where his next meal will come from, but his need for protection is paramount. Porsche not only saves him, he becomes the paragon of safety for a man who wants for nothing, bathing in mafia millions. By comparison, Porsche lives in monochrome, striving to keep his house above board. “He’s the main pillar for his family,” Apo says. “He fights for his brother, he fights for himself, and mostly he follows his heart, wherever that may take him.”

It takes him to the underbelly of the mafia world, where the titular characters begin to fulfill each other’s needs, as they hunger for love and belonging. “Porsche doesn’t have parents,” Apo says. “He always flirts with any kind of girl, and it’s not the main point, because the main point is he only needs the moment that he [gets] cuddled by those girls.” That kind of affection is physiological and temporarily satiating, though unable to completely satisfy. Kinn opens up his world. Something clicks beyond Kinn’s aesthetic appeal, however abundant it is.

“Playing the character of Kinn was a very natural thing,” Mile says. “Kinn actually has a lot of charm, and one of those charms is he is very clear about [his sexuality]. And he’s very clear about who he is.” Perhaps when Kinn feels that his back is guarded, his heart doesn’t have to be. “Kinn is very admirable in the way he conducts his life.” Apo finds Porsche to be similar: “He just follows his heart. He just does what he wants to do,” Apo says. “[The things he does with Kinn], he cannot do something like that with other people.” It’s more about the soul, the inside of the person, rather than anything physical, for Porsche. “Internal aspect is the rules of needs, of the Maslow theory,” Apo says, making a triangle with his hands.

When they’ve fulfilled their safety needs, love blossoms alongside a deep-seated hunger for freedom. “On the surface, Porsche might not look like that good of a person, but Kinn sees through that to his core, that Porsche is actually a good person and that he is not a threat to him,” Mile says. Porsche is suited to be Kinn’s bodyguard precisely because he doesn’t want to be, and Kinn’s mafia responsibilities are tantamount to a lockbox, where death is the only escape. “When Porsche comes into his life, it’s almost like his life with Porsche is the freedom that he’s always wanted,” Mile adds. “Their objective in life is the same. They want to have freedom.”

Everything on screen in KinnPorsche is meticulous and crafted by skilled hands, and nothing is gratuitous. It is all kinds of gritty, violent, and sexy, but for good reason, driving the narrative forward. “It's not overly complicated to understand character motivations, and it doesn't go too dark or too violent just for the sake of being dark and violent,” Mile notes. Apo and Mile’s faces beam with pride, it’s clear as day — as they should. After facing cancellation, the project was finally picked up by the team at Be On Cloud. That said, this show is not for the faint-hearted.

It’s not fashioned to meet the checkbox criteria of morality, nor does it align itself with any concrete stance of right or wrong. “Viewers will find that morality really can’t [easily] be defined,” Mile says. “The world is gray, in a sense, and they’re just human beings who go through life.” The characters often justify any means to reach an end, including inexcusable actions that many viewers will no doubt condemn; in one way or another, the KinnPorsche rogues’ gallery will surely fill to an abundance. “The audience nowadays have access to [a lot of information], and so they have the discretion to discern what is right or wrong,” Apo says. “If the viewers watch our show with empathy, they of course will [learn] something because in the way we present the characters, it is the harsh reality of life, and we as human beings are not black and white. Everything is gray.” It’s a mafia series, after all.

Vying for the venereal thrill of it all, glimpses of sex scenes speckle the series trailer, launching us right into the thick of it, so to speak. But behind the camera is a production predicated on safety, closing the set to any unnecessary personnel when filming the intimate scenes. Mile confesses to being an exceedingly shy person. “Do you believe?” he asks. (Apo chimes in with his best Cher singing: “Do you believe?”) “In normal everyday life, it’s almost impossible to be naked in front of other people,” Mile says, thanking the production team, and one special someone: “I especially want to thank Apo for being a good partner.” Filming these particular love scenes in KinnPorsche was a new sandbox to play in, but every effort was made to create “a comfortable circumstance,” Apo says. “If I didn’t have a good partner like Mile, I wouldn’t be able to perform well.”

KinnPorsche has been dubbed by some as the Euphoria of the BL world, perhaps because of a shared propensity for risque content, or a similar fan hype from a deeply invested audience. Apo hasn’t yet managed to see Euphoria just yet. “I don’t have much time to watch [it] because I sold my sweat and blood to shoot KinnPorsche The Series ,” he laughs, “No sugarcoating. It’s real.” Mile, on the other hand, has started the first season after Bible’s recommendation. “I like that it’s bold enough to present these themes,” he says. “It is similar to our show in that we are brave enough to bring forth these issues and to tell the story about them.”

KinnPorsche situates queerness as the normal aspect of life that we know it to be, and that’s by design. Self-actualization may be the apex of an old theoretical pyramid, but the show’s acknowledgement of a growing queer audience is the true tier-topper here. “It presents [their sexuality] as a natural part of life, it is just one factor in life,” Mile says. “The nuance really comes more in the conflict that they have to face.” Sexuality in the world of KinnPorsche is labeled by action, not words.

“[LGBTQ+ people] aren’t different from other human beings,” Apo says. “We want to represent equality between everybody, we are all the same.” There is unity in the ways in which we are the same, and beauty in the ways that we are not. “Differentiation can create massive change,” Apo adds, referencing Benedict Cumberbatch’s The Imitation Game role of Alan Turing, the scientist responsible for cracking Germany’s Enigma machine. “He’s gay, and ‘gay’ is not a problem to create the big things of our world.”

This is not a show that labors on character identity. This is not coming-of-age, where characters so often discuss every expanding detail of their immediate four walls. Here, they simply ⁠— yet fully ⁠— exist. “I feel honored to be able to represent it in this series and want to thank the fans for giving us the opportunity to be a part of representation of the LGBTQ+ community,” says Mile. “If there wasn’t an audience for this, and if there weren’t people who support us, then there wouldn’t be KinnPorsche The Series .”

Maslow wondered what happens to a man’s desires when bread is plentiful and his hunger is satisfied. The answer is woven into Kinn and Porsche’s love story. “They basically fulfill each other’s hearts,” Apo says. “When Kinn comes into Porsche’s life, he fills something that’s missing in his life, and then Kinn does the same for Porsche.” This is a mafia series, but it overflows with heart.

All the Symbolism in Kate Middleton's Video About Her Cancer Journey

From a new ring to the color blue, let's break down all the easter eggs in the video shared by Kensington Palace.

Kate Middleton announced today she is finished with her chemotherapy treatment , sharing the news in a three minute long video ( watch above ) filmed in Norfolk last month.

"Despite all that has gone before, I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life," the Princess of Wales narrates. "William and I are so grateful for the support we have received and have drawn great strength from all those who are helping us at this time. Everyone’s kindness, empathy and compassion has been truly humbling. To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey – I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of darkness, can come light, so let that light shine bright."

The video, which T&C 's Victoria Murphy notes is "astonishing" in its intimacy , is chock-full of symbolism. T&C understands that video, filmed by Will Warr, is meant to show how she has drawn strength from her family and loved ones, and on spending time on the things which bring her joy, including spending time in the outdoors. Here, a guide to the hidden meaning in Kate's announcement:

Standing at the base of a tree

Parts of today's video show Kate standing at the base of a large tree. While different trees can carry different symbolic meanings, trees more broadly symbolize life, growth, wisdom, and more.

It's clearly a motif Kate finds significant; she was also photographed alongside a tree for the picture that accomanied another personal message Kate shared in June ,

Kate in the driver's seat

In the opening shots of the video, Kate is pictured in the driver's seat—clearly indicating that she is back in control of her life.

Her new ring

There are a few close-up shots in the video of an apparently new piece of jewelry the Princess of Wales is wearing on her ring finger, replacing her sapphire engagement ring . The new eternity band was possibly glimpsed earlier this summer in a video shared by Will and Kate to congratulate Team GB .

Releasing a butterfly

Near the end of the three minute long video, Kate releases a butterfly—a symbol of hope and transformation. The Dictionary of Symbolism notes "the butterfly has become a metaphor for transformation and hope; across cultures, it has become a symbol for rebirth and resurrection, for the triumph of the spirit and the soul over the physical prison, the material world." It's an apt symbol for Kate's triumph over her cancer battle.

Throughout the film, fern leaves pop up numerous times. While ferns carry different symbolism across cultures, some common themes are new life, endurance and resilience.

Her pendant necklace

The Princess appears to be wearing a meaningful disc pendant necklace from Daniella Draper. It features the initials of her three kids, Princess Charlotte, Prince George, and Prince Louis, along with diamond stars.

The color blue

The Wales family often makes their key appearances in the unifying color blue . Blue—a calming and relaxing color— signifies trust and stability. It's not surprising that Kate and her whole family are dressed in the shade for the video.

The Middletons

Can people be symbolism? Perhaps! Kate's parents, Carole and Michael , appear briefly in the video—nodding to the support she has not just of the House of Windsor but of her Middleton family .

The music choice

The final song that plays in the video is "Ireland" by Ben Winwood. It's notable choice of musician, as Winwood is based out of North Wales, UK—a nod to Kate's role as the Princess of Wales.

Kate Middleton Reveals She Has Finished Chemo, Says the 'Last 9 Months Have Been Incredibly Tough'

"Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown," the Princess of Wales says

Kate Middleton has finished her chemotherapy treatment and is sharing personal details about her journey since being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

On Monday, Sept. 9, the Princess of Wales released an emotional video message filmed near her family's home in Norfolk last month. It also features her husband, Prince William , and their three children, Prince George , 11, Princess Charlotte , 9, and Prince Louis , 6.

"As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment," Kate says in the video. "The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.

"The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you. With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything.

"This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved.

"Doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes," she says.

"I am however looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can," she continues.

"Despite all that has gone before, I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life.

"William and I are so grateful for the support we have received and have drawn great strength from all those who are helping us at this time. Everyone’s kindness, empathy and compassion has been truly humbling."

Kate concludes, "To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey – I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of darkness, can come light, so let that light shine bright."

PEOPLE understands that the Princess of Wales is looking forward to undertaking a handful of public engagements over the coming months, however, as she says in her video message, her focus is on being cancer-free and her journey to full recovery is long.

She will be returning to a light program of external engagements for the remainder of the year, reflecting the need to focus on making a full recovery.

Kate has started to work from home, on projects including her work on early childhood, and will continue to do so over the coming months. She is likely to attend Remembrance Day in November alongside the royal family and has begun plans for her annual carol concert in December at Westminster Abbey.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson says King Charles (who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer) and Queen Camilla “consider the details in today’s announcement to be wonderful news and will continue to offer all love, thoughts and support to The Princess on her continued path to full recovery.”

In the heartfelt video, Kate Middleton is captured in tender, private family moments. From driving through the tranquil English countryside with William and their children to sharing affectionate gestures with her husband, the video highlights their close-knit family life. In the woods, Kate leans on William’s shoulder as they watch their kids play, finding solace in nature during her treatment. She is seen leaning against a tree and gently pushing Louis on a swing. The family shares joyful moments playing cards with Kate’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton. On the beach, Kate and William relax on a blanket with their dog nearby, and in a touching scene, Kate releases a butterfly from her hands.

The Princess of Wales has been largely absent from public life throughout the entirety of 2024. After undergoing a planned abdominal surgery in January, Kate announced in a moving video message on March 22 that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was receiving chemotherapy. She has only been seen in an official capacity twice this year — on June 15 at Trooping the Colour and on July 14 at Wimbledon, alongside her daughter Princess Charlotte and her sister Pippa Middleton .

In a statement released in June accompanied by a portrait taken under a tree at Windsor, Kate wrote that while she has "good days," the challenges of chemotherapy also brought about tough days, too. In her March video address, she shared that her work continues to bring her "a deep sense of joy," and as she continued chemotherapy for an undisclosed type of cancer this summer, Kate worked from home at Adelaide Cottage. She has held regular meetings with her private secretary Tom White, assistant private secretary Natalie Burrows and the Prince and Prince of Wales' communications secretary Lee Thompson to discuss plans for the future and stay updated on the latest from her various royal initiatives.

"It's good not to feel under pressure and just take her time and have slow days if she needs to," a source told PEOPLE over the summer.

Prince William, 42, returned to public duty Sept. 5 after a summer spent with Kate, also 42, and their children Prince George , 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis , 6. The three kids returned to school the same week as their father returned to work following a summer spent primarily at their country home, Anmer Hall, in Norfolk, as well as time at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where Kate was photographed driving to church at Crathie Kirk on Aug. 25.

After her Wimbledon appearance in July, royal biographer Robert Jobson, author of the new book Catherine, the Princess of Wales: A Biography of the Future Queen , told PEOPLE "Before, she used to live her life by the calendar, and now she is living her life, and the calendar comes in after."

He added, "She will be back, but when you have had an experience like this, it changes your perspective and the order of things."
