With rooms from $190, it provides stunning city views and offers a romance package, including a dozen red roses and a bottle of sparkling wine. Santa Barbara

As a result, San Juan could be an unexpected but wonderful couples’ escape. (Bonus: No passport necessary.) Check into the dreamy 18th-century boutique hotel The Gallery Inn in Old San Juan, with rates from $155 per night. Once settled, visit the 16th-century fort Viejo San Juan or 16th-century Castillo San Felipe del Morro. With its beautiful French Quarter region and no shortage of sights, New Orleans is one of the many perfect choices for United States romantic getaways.

Perhaps most associated with  Mardi Gras , there’s a lot more to this city than a massive carnival (even if that is a fun time to visit!).

We have a few romantic favorites in New Orleans. One of our favorite experiences was taking a steamboat cruise with dinner on the Mississippi River.

That was a lovely evening experience that featured live jazz, gorgeous city views, and of course, an experience aboard a real-life steam-powered sternwheeler!

Other fun things we enjoyed doing were sipping coffee in Cafe Beignet, people watching in Jackson Square, riding the old streetcars, and touring some of the old city center homes.

Naturally, there are some wonderfully romantic restaurants in New Orleans as well for a couples evening out, somewhere like Bacchanal would do very nicely, followed perhaps by a spot of salsa at Chris Owens Nightclub?

Whatever you decide to do, we’re sure you’ll find New Orleans to be the perfect romantic city for you and your partner!

San Francisco, California

California boasts its fair share of romantic getaways in the United States. San Francisco is one such destination.

There’s a reason why so many screenwriters set their romantic comedies in San Francisco – it’s a beautiful place to fall in love. And it’s a gorgeous place to take your special someone. 

If you’ve had your fill of sunset views of the Golden Gate Bridge (just kidding, you can never have enough of them), there are a myriad of places to take a stroll and have picnics – on a beach, or in Golden Gate, Presidio or Dolores parks to name a few. Ithaca has a great farmer’s market which makes for a great lunch and some shopping. Cornell University is close as well and the Ivy League campus is actually stunning with waterfalls, hills and fantastic architecture. It makes for a great romantic walk.

If you’re more active then Robert H. Tremam State Park and Watkins Glen State Park are both nearby and with their gorges and waterfalls they definitely add a nice touch to a romantic getaway.

The best part of a romantic vacation to the Finger  Lakes area, however, has to be the star gazing. It’s absolutely breathtaking and the best way to end a romantic evening!

Cozy mountain resorts, magical snow falling from the sky, and the coziest and most charming downtown strip/main street I’ve ever found in the U.S. – if you’re looking for romance, Park City, Utah has it all.

The ski resort destination is a short 35 min drive from the Salt Lake City airport making it easy to get to while still feeling worlds away from hectic city life.  Great skiing, local shops, great food, and gorgeous resorts make for a relaxing romantic vacation. After hitting the slopes, unwind with a little après-ski at your resort or one of the local bars in town. Take a stroll down Main Street hand-in-hand while exploring the local boutiques and shops.

Cap off your day with a romantic dinner out, either taking in the views at the Stein Erickson Lodge, going for a steak dinner at Ruth’s Chris, or an awesome dining experience at Handle, before retreating to your hotel for a dip in the heated pool, hot tub, or in-room Jacuzzi tub.

We Two Drifters have to agree, Bar Harbor, Maine is one of the most romantic places to visit in the US.

Sitting in a cozy blanket over a hill to watch the sunrise or driving along the ocean or sitting on the beach watching the waves or enjoying a meal by the bayside.

If that’s what you are looking for, then Bar Harbor is a perfect choice.

Bar Harbor, a small, charming town is nestled along the Atlantic Ocean on Mt. Desert island in Maine.

Surrounded by Acadia National Park , the home of rugged rocky landscape, mountains and beaches is a perfect place to come up close with nature.

The best way to explore is driving down the 27-mile Park loop road that runs along the rocky coast offering some breathtaking vistas.

Some of the scenic spots enroute are– Thunder hole, Sand beach, Otter cliff and Cadillac mountain.

Beating the cold strong winds atop the Cadillac mountain, watching the orange and purple haze overlooking the bay, as the sun rises, is totally worth it. One can even walk to the tidal island of Bar Island during low tide and immerse in stunning views of Bar Harbor and Acadia.

If that’s not enough try getting a scenic bird’s eye view in a plane. Acadia and Bar Harbor won’t disappoint you and yearn you to be back again.

Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

Mount Rainier National Park is located in Washington state about 60 miles southeast of Seattle. Centered around the beautiful, glacier-capped Mount Rainier, the park is a true natural icon. The mountain, which is an active volcano, ascends over 14,000 feet above sea level.

White Mountains, New Hampshire

If you love romantic trips in the US that include exploring charming towns and the great outdoors, the White Mountains in New Hampshire is the perfect romantic weekend destination!

I might be slightly biased since my husband asked me to marry him after a fantastic day strolling the streets of Littleton, NH.

The town, although small, has all the lovely features of quintessential New Hampshire including a running watermill and covered bridges over the river!

In particular, Littleton celebrates music. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the decorated pianos and “Harmony Park”, which showcases 3 xylophone-styled instruments and drums free for all visitors to play!

Before heading home the next morning we stopped by Franconia Notch State Park to find an quick and scenic hike to end our weekend getaway on a high note. 

We hustled up the 1.5 mile loop trail for Bald Mountain and Artist Bluff trail to enjoy a stunning view overlooking Echo Lake with the rest of the more famous White Mountains in the background.

Chicago, Illinois

Could this be the most romantic place in the US?

Chicago  is one of my favorite romantic cities. However, nothing tops a dinner at the Signature Room located on the 95 th  and 96 th  floors of the Hancock Tower.

Make sure to reserve a table by the window here so you can enjoy a fantastic meal above the cloud line or take in the skyline and shores of Lake Michigan from a completely new angle.

Even if you have other plans for dinner, you can grab a quick drink in the Signature Room Lounge on the 96 th .

Despite the fact that it is one of the largest cities in America it is also one of the best for romantics. With virtually every type of food – domestic and exotic, you are certain to find one that matches you and your partner’s tastes … or keep things fresh by trying new experiences together.

While Chicago is probably best known for its tall buildings, there is a surprising amount of green space and public lands that are perfect for exploring together too. This includes strolling through the park or relaxing on the beach listening to the waves coming in off of Lake Michigan.

Or you can grab a kiss by one of the pocket parks along the Chicago River and share a moment that’s all about you while surrounded by the city almost 10 million people.

Charleston, South Carolina

The South is filled with several of the most romantic places in the United States. How about that Southern charm?

Charleston, South Carolina, embodies the slowing down one expects when traveling south and also exudes the lush beauty that comes from warm summers. 

For a romantic stay, you’ll want to check in at the Wentworth Mansion, following in the footsteps of Reese Witherspoon and Diana Ross.

This splendid historic mansion in the downtown historic district features large guest rooms with 14 ½-foot-high ceilings and Italian crystal chandeliers, plus luxury amenities such as oversize whirlpool bathtubs, nighty turndown with housemade chocolates, and triple-sheeted beds.

And for dinner, all you need do is stroll over to the Circa 1886 restaurant located inside the former carriage house.  This charming restaurant is romantic to the core, and the cuisine is inventive and the service superb.  It’s enough to make you swoon.

Continue the romance the next day with a horse-drawn carriage tour of Charleston, South Carolina.  Drivers and riders never know in advance which route they will get–it is decided by lottery, but a local says, “I haven’t had a bad tour yet.”

Another must-do is a tour of the neoclassical Nathaniel Russell House Museum. Built in 1808 and restored in the 1990s, it features local bricks and beautiful original white ironwork.

This important dwelling offers a deep peek into the upper crust’s lifestyle. with acclaimed features that include 14-foot ceilings (which helped keep things cool), gilded cornices, and a cantilevered staircase.

Estes Park, Colorado

Estes  Park is a small town in northern Colorado, located near the entrance of the Rocky Mountain National Park.

It is a great mountain town for couples looking for a romantic outdoorsy getaway. The cute town center is walkable and features old-fashioned candy stores, several antique and vintage stores, art galleries, and several cafes and restaurants.

There are also lots of places to enjoy a drink with several local breweries, wineries, and distilleries.

Couples may also enjoy taking a ride on the  Estes  Park Aerial Tramway to get a scenic view over the town. There are ample outdoor activities in the area which include hiking, horseback riding, fishing, boating, rafting, ziplining, 4WD tours, and camping.

More relaxed activities include scenic drives in the mountains, spa days, and leisurely walks.

For those not afraid of ghosts, we recommend visiting  The Stanley Hotel  which is a historic hotel built in 1909 that is probably best known for being the inspiration for Stephen King’s bestselling novel  The Shining .

You can take a guided tour here (including ghost tours), eat at one of its restaurants, and have a drink at its whiskey bar which offers Colorado’s largest selection of whiskeys and single malt scotches.

Although the mountains and outdoor activities draw people here, there are loads of other things to keep you entertained and it is a perfect place for a romantic weekend getaway!

Key West, Florida

There’s no doubt that Florida is one of the best vacation spots in the US for couples. There are many romantic places in Florida . And the Keys are especially romantic.

We loved Key West. It’s beautiful, a truly tropical getaway right by the southwestern tip of Florida State. We came here for a romantic holiday together and has an amazing time.

Key West is an island city in Florida . It’s a 160km/94m drive from Miami and in fact closer to Havana, Cuba.

The historic Old Town is one of our favourite places to walk around together. It’s full of 19th-century architecture, a range of brilliant restaurants, boutique shops and bars.

This was where the kings of Spain and literary figures like Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams used to love to visit for holiday.

Another romantic highlight to do together is renting a boat and going sailing around the shores of Key West. There’s a whole range of companies offering fabulous Champagne sunset cruises.

The most romantic thing about Key West we loved the most was the incredible sunsets every single evening. The best thing is to head to a beach with a few drinks and just chill there watching it. Nothing beats this!

Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Eureka Springs is a funky little artist community nestled in the Ozarks. The Ozarks is a unique region that was built up around nature. Eureka Springs became a popular destination in the late-1800s because of the clear air and “healing” spring waters.

The town was built up around the mountain and almost  150 years later , people, and especially couples, flock to this Ozarks town for an escape. It turns out, this may be one of the most romantic getaways in the US!

Everything about this town is romantic. The winding streets filled with coffee shops and quirky stores are perfect for an afternoon walk hand-in-hand with your loved one.

The two major hotels in the heart of Eureka Springs have spas and beautiful jacuzzi suites, so you can enjoy the beauty without even leaving your room!

Plus, because of its location in nature you can explore the giant spring nearby, a hike in the mountains or get out on Beaver Lake.

If staying in nature and driving into town is more your style, you can stay at a lakefront cabin, in a treehouse or even a hobbit hole!

Eureka Springs is a great destination for couples who enjoy it all: luxury, outdoor activities, shopping and more!

San Diego, California

Tourists traveling around California often seem to overlook San Diego due to the touristic hotspots such as San Francisco and L.A  further north– however, the city is one of the most romantic and beautiful places of the country!

If you’re looking for some peaceful nature, go for a hike in Torrey Pines State Park or enjoy the beautiful Balboa Park. The one thing which makes San Diego so romantic are the beautiful sunsets which you should watch from the various beaches of San Diego.

My favorite spot has to be the iconic sunset cliffs. This small nature park offers a fantastic view on the Pacific Ocean, while the sun is slowly setting behind the sea, changing the colors of the sky.

The cliffs also never seem to be overcrowded by other people and it’s always possible to find a quiet spot to enjoy the view with your partner or by yourself. If you travel around California, make sure to include San Diego in your journey – you won’t regret it!

Asheville, North Carolina

The Two Drifters are partial to North Carolina for romantic US getaways—what a great region with lots of Southern Charm!

This past summer my partner and I went on a romantic getaway weekend to  Asheville , North Carolina. Even though he is from North Carolina he still had never traveled to the liberal city in the mountains so we knew we had to go.

We spent three days in  Asheville  brewery hopping, checking out local cafes, hiking, and typical sightseeing. The city has so much to do, which makes it a romantic destination for every type of couple.

If you’re into outdoor adventures you and your loved one can take to the DuPont State forest for some secluded hiking and waterfall chasing.

If you’re more into history  Asheville  is a great place to learn about America’s gilded age. The Biltmore Estate is the largest private residence in the United States. The massive home sits on a grand estate adjacent to the city and has been entertaining guests since it first opened its doors in 1895.

It’s a fantastic place to spend a day gallivanting around the grounds, having high tea, and seeing how the other half used to live in the old days.

If you’re more into drinking good beers then you’re in luck!  Asheville  is the place for craft beer enthusiasts on the East Coast and has more breweries per capita than many other cities in the United States.

Whatever you decide to do there, it’s sure to be a romantic time!

Kauai Hawaii is the island of rainbows and magnificent sunsets. There is a lot to experience with your significant other on this island; ziplining, hiking, golfing , watersports, helicopter tours and a colorful canyon. 

As you drive together through the island you will find many beaches that just pop up that you can just pull over and enjoy a private swim or picnic.

To thoroughly enjoy one of Kauai’s amazing sunsets my Husband arranged a private beach dinner in a tent. We took our seats at the lovely table set with flowers. Our private butler poured us champagne to toast. 

The sun began to descend slowing as we ate our delicious meal. The sky was a magnificent orange.  I kept looking for the greenlight, but it did not show itself this special night.

Kauai discovered to be a very romantic destination and I wish to enjoy it again someday.

Ocean Grove, New Jersey

Looking for a great and unexpected couples getaway in USA? Couples who travel to New Jersey should make sure not to skip the small town of Ocean Grove on the Jersey Shore. It is settled between Sandy Hook in the north and Atlantic City to the south.

Besides being the number one destination in the State of New Jersey, one can expect blue skies, mostly sunny days an enjoy over 200 kilometers of white sandy beaches as far as the eye can see.

No wonder that one romantic thing to do is to take a walk on the long boardwalk. Especially during sunset hour it is the best thing to do. 

Also, you should definitely wander along the small side streets, enjoy an ice cream at the old parlors and experience the wonderful wooden Victorian houses of Ocean Grove. Most of them have been renovated extensively.

Our perfect romantic USA destination has white sandy beaches, palm trees, sunny days, warm weather, waves crashing, tasty food, good microbrews, great sunsets, and a spa. In the USA for us, that perfect spot is Fort Myers Beach, Florida.

On our first visit, we fell in love, there are a ton of  things to do in Fort Myers  that kept us busy exploring the day. At the end of the day go for a walk down the beach, if you’re really adventurous you can walk all 7 miles of it. Make sure to stop and watch the sunset, we suggest one of the beach bars.

Head out to one of for some fresh seafood, we suggest getting the coconut shrimp at Dot’s. There are a ton of hotels right on the beach, we stayed at the Pink Shell Resort which offer several bedroom options.

There are also really cute little beach houses for rent. No matter what you do or where you stay you’ll have an amazing romantic getaway with your loved one.

Napa, California

Napa , California is incredibly romantic to visit thanks to being the heart of wine country. There are few things more romantic than tasting wine with your lover in gorgeous vineyard after vineyard. 

Napa  has perfect weather and sunshine all year long which makes it even more appealing.

We enjoyed a fabulous weekend there visiting wineries, sipping delicious wines, learning about wine-making, and driving through the gorgeous countryside.

We took a hot air ballon ride which was the ultimate romantic experience in  Napa . We witnessed a marriage proposal in our balloon, and then landed for a champagne breakfast.

Some of our favorite wineries to visit in  Napa  included Castello di Amorosa which is Tuscan castle and winery that looks straight out of a fairy tale. We loved Vincent Arroyo because they gave us an excellent private tour and taught us the secret of making good wine. Artesa and Heitz also have great wine and beautiful views.

At Whetstone cellars you can taste inside the 19th-century French-style chateau or in the courtyard surrounded by ancient Cedar and Oak trees. You can’t go wrong in Napa  for romance!

I love getting dressed up and going to nice restaurants. That’s totally not LJ’s thing! Though he will do it because he loves me and I appreciate him for that, it is not something I want to do all the time with him since I know he doesn’t really enjoy it. So when I travel without him it’s something I enjoy guilt-free. 

It’s important to remember, though, that you should always discuss your plans with your partner. Don’t assume that they won’t want to go on the trip because you think they won’t like it. Your partner might surprise you and be up for trying something new – in which case your independent plans can become a brand new experience with plenty of bonding.

Some people have certain traditions. Perhaps you and your family always gather in the summertime for an overnight beach trip, or maybe you all head out to Tennessee for Thanksgiving. Whatever the tradition may be, it might not be the best experience for your partner.

Maybe your current budget only allows for one person to go, maybe they don’t like your family, or their work interferes with the trip. Does that mean you should skip on the family tradition? Of course, not! Go for it.

This is also true for anyone who wants to visit a best friend who has moved away. It might be a great idea to plan a mini-vacation where you can see your bestie and make more wonderful memories – just you and your friend, of course.

One thing that can hold couples back from traveling together is childcare. If you don’t have any family and friends who are willing to spend a few nights with your children, it can make traveling a major challenge. You want to leave your kids with someone you trust, especially if they are young, and hiring a random babysitter to watch them can be unsettling.

So, what is a family supposed to do? Traveling alone allows one adult to stay home with the children while the other parent gets a good break. Now, we’re not saying mom should fly away to Paris for three weeks and leave dad with all the stress and havoc. But a night or two away can do wonders for a parent, even if that means relaxing in a hotel hot tub until 3 AM. My sister has visited me a few times throughout the years for a mommy-cation without her husband due to limited childcare options.

The most important thing to remember when it comes to children is to let them know what is going on and make sure it is okay with your partner. Some parents have a hard time dealing with kids 24/7 by themselves, and this should be discussed beforehand. The two of you should also plan a trip for the other parent soon so that they can have a break, too.

Trying to plan a vacation when the two of you work full time (or overtime) can be stressful and seemingly impossible. It’s not likely that your days off or vacation times are going to be at the same time, which can lead to disappointment after disappointment. 

If your vacation days are stacking up and you are ready to be work-free for a few days, and your partner is still stuck working 9 to 5 with no free days, then it might be the best choice to use your vacation days and go on an independent adventure. This will allow you to use those vacation days you have worked so hard for while allowing you to relax and take your mind off work for a while.

Understand that when your partner has their vacation days, they will likely want to go on a trip far away from their workplace, too.

While there are many pros to traveling without your partner, there are a few cons that are important to consider before booking your solo trip.

If you are thinking that you ‘need a break’ from your partner and are going on an independent vacation to get away from them, then your relationship may have serious, deeper issues that will not be fixed by a separate vacation.

Taking a break from your partner never works. You need to sit down and find the root of the problem and work on fixing that issue. Running away from your partner on an independent vacation when your relationship is struggling is only going to make things worse.

Therefore, happy couples must be the only couples taking separate vacations. This avoids fears, worries, and the possibility of the relationship failing while the other one is ‘taking a break’ on their vacay.

When you’re taking an independent vacation, you have the chance to sit back and relax without worrying about anyone else. Sure, you are going to think of your love and your children while on your vacation, but after that thought and a quick phone call, you are back to being completely alone. 

It’s good to have some alone time. This allows you to relax and be at one with your thoughts. You might come to terms with something or find out something new about yourself, which is great. But too much alone time can be a bad thing for some people. 

While some people have no problem with spending days alone with their thoughts and doing what they enjoy the most, other people might end up feeling lonely on their independent trip. Keep this in mind when you’re planning a solo trip.

One way to combat severe loneliness during an independent trip is to keep the trip short and close to home. If you want to take a break while you have the time off from work, book a room for a night or two in a city that is relatively close to where you live. This can give you the comfort of knowing that your loved ones aren’t too far away while allowing you a couple of nights to unwind alone.

When you plan a trip without your partner, you should never feel guilty. But unfortunately, many people end up feeling bad because they didn’t bring their loved ones along for the adventure. This is why it is so important to communicate before and during the trip. 

If you have a good, long talk with your partner about why you want to take this trip and you are both on board with it, then there should be no feelings of guilt. If you are feeling guilty, it may point to an underlying issue that you have with your partner that needs to be discussed.

Remember: you are taking an independent trip for a reason, whether it’s big or small. Your relationship should be strong enough that you can do this without the other person feeling sad, left out, or nervous. 

Whether you can take an independent vacation comes down to your relationship and how strong it is. A happy, strong relationship should have no problem with traveling separately. Of course, some couples choose never to do this, and that is okay, too. It will all come down to your relationship and what the two of you are comfortable with.

So, if your partner expresses they will be upset if you go on an independent vacation, you probably shouldn’t go. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they don’t trust you. Some people do not like to spend time by themselves and won’t be happy that you’re leaving.

Or maybe they feel like you aren’t prioritizing time with them. A while back my friend was dating a guy who didn’t want her traveling without him since they hadn’t been anywhere together recently. So for my bachelorette weekend in Miami and Bahamas, she flew out and spent one day with us girls and spent the rest of the time with her boyfriend and his family who lived in the city. This compromise worked for them and she still got to get in some solo/girl time.

The best thing to do is to talk about taking separate vacations and listen to everything your significant other has to say. If they are on board, then great – you have much more communicating and planning to do. If they are not okay with it, then find out why. It could be something as simple as they are afraid to be alone at night or something deeper such as them not having any trust you.

My family booked first-class 'apartment' seats for an 8-hour Etihad Airways flight. I can see why the private airplane rooms cost $6,000 a pop.

• My family of four used travel points to book a first-class flight on Etihad Airways.
• The luxurious "apartments" typically cost $6,000 a person, but we paid about $33 each.
• It was great, from the personalized check-in process to the amazing meal and  in-flight showers .

My husband is a frequent business traveler, so we're constantly trying to maximize his travel points to pay for some amazing trips for us and our two kids.

Flying has been hectic and nightmarish lately, but letting the best redemption opportunities steer our travel plans has led to more comfortable and luxurious vacations.

Last year, my husband and I planned our family of four's most epic trip yet: flying around the world on 11 different airlines across four continents over 70 days.

Booking Etihad Airways' first-class "apartments" for our flight from Abu Dhabi and London was easily the best redemption of the trip.

Here's what it was like.

We redeemed our travel points to drastically reduce the cost of our tickets.

We have lots of American Airlines points through the company's AAdvantage program, and Etihad is one of its partner airlines .

Although finding award availability on partner airlines can be challenging, the values can be tremendous. In our case, we took advantage of our family's flexible schedule to find last-minute unsold inventory, which is often released just days before the flight.

If your travel plans allow you to book (or, in our case, modify) your flights last minute, you can often find multiple seats on these "unicorn" flights.

The first-class apartment seats we booked on Etihad typically cost more than $6,000 per person. But we redeemed 62,500 AAdvantage miles (and paid $33 per person) for our flights.

We checked in early in the morning.

Instead of the typical airport check-in lines, Etihad's first-class area had sit-down desks with concierge-level services.

Traveling with children can be stressful, but being in a quiet terminal with a personalized experience made it incredibly easy and enjoyable.

From there, we went to the first-class lounge.

We were booked on the final flight using the "old" lounge at Zayed International Airport as Etihad was moving to a new terminal later that morning.

The employees were happy and accommodating, even if the energy seemed bittersweet as they prepared to shut off the lights behind us.

There were fewer than 10 guests in the airport lounge , and we found the service impeccable. After enjoying a fantastic made-to-order breakfast, we had coffee and a mimosa (for the adults) while relaxing before boarding.

We couldn't believe how awesome the apartments were.

The single-passenger apartments on the A380 have closing doors, a three-seater couch that converts to a bed, and a comfortable recliner chair.

Since we booked only a few days in advance, we had less control over seating choices . It was a bit of a struggle at first because we didn't want to end up too far away from our kids.

Luckily, once we boarded, the flight attendants helped move the children to adjoining rooms near us. There were only two other people riding first class, so it wasn't very difficult.

The freebies and perks continued on the plane.

Before departing, we each got a set of comfortable pajamas and slippers.

The adults also enjoyed another complimentary glass of Champagne, and everyone made their lunch selections from the extensive menu.

My husband and I got our own little date on the flight.

The flight attendant asked if my husband and I wanted a "date" for our in-flight meal , which involved setting a table for two in my husband's apartment.

We started with caviar and more bubbly, then my husband had the Arabic mezze and I had the burrata. Both appetizers were exceptional.

For our mains, we both had the well-prepared beef tenderloin. A cheese selection, chocolate, and more wine followed, and everything was amazing.

Lunch was the main event on this flight, but another simple meal was served about an hour before landing in London.

Once we finished lunch, our couches were converted into beds.

Once lunch was over, the attendants came around and converted all of our couches so they were completely reclined.

Our kids were very excited to eat their ice cream in bed.

The flight was eight hours, and the comfortable beds allowed us to get a couple of hours of sleep.

My husband and daughter opted to try out the shower in the sky

Passengers in the apartments can reserve free shower times at the beginning, middle, or end of the flight.

My husband and daughter both chose to end their flight with a shower. During their 30-minute time slots, they each got five minutes of hot water — which could be paused at any time.

Overall, this was an exceptional way to redeem our points.

The Etihad apartments are one of the most luxurious commercial flight options in the world.

Although it took planning, flexibility, and a little luck, I think this was an incredible use of our travel points.

The value of paying about $30 for a $6,000 experience alone had me sold, but every aspect of our trip was outstanding — from the check-in process to the in-flight meals.

I highly recommend it if you ever have the chance (and the points).

What I Did When I Got Upgraded But My Travel Partner Didn't

Will taking that upgrade tank your trip? For me, it didn't. Here's how it played out plus some solid travel advice!

• Getting a flight upgrade is all about status - earn miles, tick the upgrade box, and hope for the best!
• It's rare for one person in a reservation to get upgraded, so prepare for the possibility.
• Consider the impact on your relationship before taking a flight upgrade solo. Communication is key.

I love a good flight upgrade and really, what’s not to like? Preferred boarding, more legroom, complimentary cocktails, and in general, service that’s a notch above what the average passenger squished into the cattle car gets. People look at upgrades differently — some think it's too expensive and others think it's so worth the money (let's be real: some upgrades are not worth the investment ). Although I rarely book a first or business class flight from the get-go, I do get upgraded quite a bit because of my status with my preferred airline. I try to fly with my preferred airline whenever I need to go somewhere, and I also use a co-branded airline credit card to earn additional miles and perks.

I’ve also gotten randomly upgraded on international flights twice in my life, once on a Dubai to Beijing flight and once on a Munich to Chicago flight. I have no idea what was behind getting that seat upgrade , but both were glorious because they were so unexpected. Hello, seats that recline into beds and amenity kits!

But, what if you’re traveling a deaux and you get upgraded, but your partner doesn’t? It happened to me. Here’s how I handled it, and why I think it’s smart to be prepared for how you’ll react if it happens to you. Spoiler alert: I took the upgrade and sat separately from my partner.

It's Unusual For One Person On A Reservation To Get Upgraded

If you’re booked on the same reservation, the odds that one traveler will be singled out for an upgrade are slim to none.

If you’re a couple traveling together, you’ve likely made and paid for your plane tickets together. You’re likely sitting together on the plane. This is how my husband and I usually travel and how most couples probably travel together. Friends who are traveling together and have booked their tickets separately – whether they’ve opted to pick seats next to each other or not – are looked at differently by the airlines.

If you’re booked together, it is unlikely that one of you will get an upgrade and the other will not. However, if one partner were to join another on a business trip or another already established trip, the reservations would probably not be together, unless the passengers took steps with the airline to have them linked.

When reservations aren’t linked, travelers can be split up, such as when a flight is canceled and all passengers are being rebooked. Separate reservations mean that a travel party might be split up. The good news is, it’s easy to link reservations – just call the airline or talk to an agent at the airport.

My Partner And I Were Number One And Two On The List For A First-Class Upgrade

Here’s the pickle – there was one available seat. just one..

I frequently get upgraded on domestic flights because of my status with my preferred airline. My best tip for getting upgraded is to build status with one airline and that's why I get upgraded as often as I do. I don’t have to do anything except make sure the “request upgrade” box is ticked on my reservation. The airline’s app tells me how many seats are available and where I am on the upgrade list, so it is easy to tell at a glance what my odds are.

The domestic jets I fly on usually have ten first class seats, so if I’m in the top five and there are multiple seats open – meaning those first class seats have not been purchased outright by someone who books a first class seat from the get-go – I have a shot. If there’s one seat available, and I’m number 19, then I usually don’t monitor my progress/position.

My husband and I were flying on a three-hour domestic flight and I noticed we were number three and four on the list, then, while we were at the gate, I noticed we were number one and number two. There was one seat available in first. I asked the gate agent if I could have it, and they told me I could, but that there was no chance of my husband sitting next to me or sitting in first class at all.

I did have options when it came to taking the upgrade, sit in first class without my husband or decline the upgrade and sit together in premium economy.

I probably could have given him the first class seat and sat in premium economy myself – I’m not sure if the airline had cared if I’d tried that switcheroo, but I didn’t, so I’ll never know. I opted to sit in first class and bid my husband adieu in the jetway. He was allowed to board with me during the first class boarding – that’s something, right?

After I’d talked to the agent and established that it would be one or none in first class, I told my husband I was going to take the upgrade and asked if he’d be OK with it. Looking back, I guess I probably did this in a way where he’d have been hard-pressed to say no. I knew him well enough to know it would have minimal to no impact on our travels or our relationship.

Try a one-person upgrade at your own risk, if you opt to take an upgrade when your travel partner doesn’t get one, mentally run through the scenarios.

We were on our way home from a trip where we’d just had 24/7 togetherness for a week. We are not newlyweds, on our honeymoon, an anniversary trip, or a romantic rendezvous in paradise . It was a short flight.

While my husband didn’t exactly jump for joy, I knew that sitting apart from him for three hours wasn’t going to cause a rift in our relationship. If I thought taking an upgrade was going to cause a problem – like having a pouty travel partner for the entire trip – I might have chosen differently.

I earned the upgrade because of my frequent flier status and I took it. I also earned more miles because I sat in first class, which ultimately benefited my husband and the rest of my family. I’m deliberate about earning miles because I know they’re going to equate to free or reduced cost travel for my loved ones. And, there’s no better way to show someone I love them than to take them on a trip.

Think you might score an upgrade but your partner won't, here’s what to watch out for when it comes to upgrades.

First, communicate the possibility beforehand, whether you’re traveling with a long-term romantic partner or a buddy. How someone reacts to the “Just so you know, I might get upgraded” should clue you in on how things will go down if you do get the upgrade.

Second, don’t gloat. Enjoy your first class seat, but don’t sashay back to 37F just to see “How things are going back here in economy.” Also, maybe don’t go on and on about the wine list or how soft the first class pajamas were because no matter how chill your travel partner is, they don’t want to hear about that. If they do, they’ll ask you. Don’t let your upgrade dominate the trip.

Third, if you’re traveling with someone high maintenance, nervous, or who isn’t a seasoned traveler, use caution and think highly about how your decision to split up will impact the trip.

Ultimately, I decided that three hours apart wouldn’t hurt my relationship or the trip overall, and I was right, but, your mileage may vary – pun intended.

They said her husband drowned snorkeling, but she saw him walk to shore. What happened?

A Michigan woman and her family are suing a Maui resort , the Hawaiian Tourism Authority, and the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau after her husband died while snorkeling . She doesn’t believe it was a drowning. 

Patricia and Ray Johnson, along with four friends, arrived at the Fairmont Kea Lani on Maui on the evening of Feb. 23, 2022, with plans to visit multiple islands over several weeks. This was the couple’s sixth time in Hawaii, and they had snorkeled the Hawaiian waters many times in the past, Patricia told USA TODAY. 

On the morning of Feb. 25, some of the travelers, including Ray, went snorkeling around Wailea Beach, which fronts the resort, while Patricia opted to walk a trail that overlooks the beach. “I looked out, and I saw my husband and my friends or people out there,” she told USA TODAY. “I’m waving at him, and it hits me.” Patricia saw what looked like other snorkelers helping Ray. 

She hurried down to the beach, but “things deteriorated quickly.” At first, Ray had his head above water and was returning to the beach, but then the 64-year-old fell onto his back with his head “snapped back at one point” and had to be pulled in. “I knew he was gone,” she said. 9-1-1 was called, but medical professionals failed to resuscitate Ray. 

The autopsy report called Ray’s death an accidental drowning, which Patricia doesn’t believe. 

“I was watching him come in, how could he be drowning?” According to her friends who were snorkeling with him, Ray was talking and also diving down under the water. At one point, he came up and said, “You gotta help me, I’m having trouble breathing,” and that’s when he decided to head back to shore. “I don’t think when people are drowning in a conditional manner, you’re going to be conversing,” she said.

What to do in Hawaii? Locals weigh in on if these popular spots are worth the hype

By a landslide, the leading cause of death for Hawaii tourists is drowning. And of ocean drownings for residents and visitors, the majority occur when snorkeling. While the ocean is powerful and unpredictable, some advocates, including the Johnsons, are trying to bring attention to a lesser-known medical condition that specifically poses risks to snorkelers and hasn’t gotten much attention over the years: Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema (ROPE). 

The Johnson family believes ROPE is the real cause of Ray’s death, and the lawsuit alleges that Hawaii travel entities have failed to educate the public on ROPE, resulting in “an important public health concern,” according to the complaint filed in the Circuit Court of the First Circuit in the State of Hawaii in February 2024. The case should begin the fact-discovery process this week.

The Hawaiian Tourism Authority, Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau and Fairmont Kea Lani declined to comment on the lawsuit. 

“I would like to see warnings out there,” Patricia told USA TODAY. “I truly believe my husband would still be here if we’d been warned.” 

How is snorkeling dangerous?

Breathing through a snorkel tube is similar to pinching your nose and breathing in through your mouth. The resistance is immediate. ROPE occurs when the negative pressure on the lungs ends up sucking bodily fluids out of the capillaries and into the airways, according to Dr. Raj Dasgupta , a California-based pulmonologist. 

“That snorkel resistance to airflow,” he said. “They want to breathe in but they have to breathe through that straw.”

Once fluid is in the lungs, it becomes difficult to breathe and people can experience hypoxia, or a lack of sufficient oxygen. “You slowly become weak then into a loss of consciousness,” Dasgupta said. Underlying health conditions such as heart and lung disease also increase someone’s predisposed risk for ROPE, he said.

If a person begins to feel shortness of breath, they may panic, causing more exertion, which can be life-threatening if they’re already suffering from a lack of oxygen, Dasgupta said. 

Drowning by ROPE is “fundamentally different” than typical drowning when people are aspirating water or submerged and often showing signs of distress, the complaint said.

A lack of public awareness

In October 2017, after California woman – and avid swimmer and snorkeler – Nancy Peacock died while snorkeling in calm waters off the coast of Hawaii Island in a full-face mask and no signs of struggle, the Hawaii State Department created the Snorkeling Safety Sub-Committee to “address public concern about snorkel-related drownings.”

In a Snorkeling Safety Study led by the sub-committee, 50 different snorkels were tested, and the experts examined nonfatal and fatal drownings. The interim report released in July 2020 concluded that “ROPE-induced hypoxia is a factor in fatal and nonfatal snorkel drownings.” The study also had a survey conducted at Oahu’s most popular snorkeling spot, Hanauma Bay, but only 36 participants – mostly locals – were interviewed due to the islands being closed to travel during the pandemic. 

The high altitude from air travel impacting someone’s lungs may be a contributing factor, but there wasn’t enough evidence in the study to confirm this. Since getting to Hawaii requires at least a five-hour flight, it’s possible that fatigue and stress from flying could play a role in someone’s risk of drowning by ROPE. 

The Hawaiian Tourism Authority funded the study to “develop appropriate safety messages.” However, as of April 2024, there have not been any public-facing messages on any of the official Hawaii tourism websites. Information cards have been passed out to most Kauai and Oahu tour boat operators, the subcommittee said. Although the study is preliminary and not robust in terms of participants and even calls for further investigation, it is the only one to explore ROPE in snorkelers so far.

“Why aren’t we in Hawaii letting people know?” said Jay Stuemke, an Oahu-based attorney who filed the complaint on the Johnsons’ behalf. “Pamphlets in rooms, apps, websites, in-room videos, all types of mechanisms to warn people. It’s an easy enough thing to do. We believe had they done that, Ray would still be alive today as well as many other people.” 

Snorkeling safety tips

◾ Always snorkel with a buddy, and if you can’t swim, don’t snorkel.

◾ Choose a snorkel with a wide opening and no constrictions in the mouthpiece.

◾ Learn to use the snorkel device before venturing out into water that’s too deep to stand in.

◾ If you feel shortness of breath, stay calm, remove the snorkel and get out of the water immediately, Dasgupta said.

My late husband’s dementia motivated us to finally travel to India

Long before the diagnosis, we promised to take our adult children on a trip to the country. at the eleventh hour, we organised a family holiday to make memories.

“Hold on!”, we all yelled in unison as my husband came perilously close to falling out of the doorless 4×4 as it swerved to avoid an oncoming truck. It was 2017 and we were en route to a leopard safari in Rajasthan, on what we knew would be our last family holiday all together.

My husband, Atherton, had been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease two years earlier, aged 64. Our marriage had been anchored by the kind of adventurous travel that was motivated by curiosity and punctuated by peril. It defined us as people and as a couple, so I felt I owed it to Atherton to keep travelling with him for as long as it was feasible. We’d visited Myanmar, Mexico and Belize , but I was aware this trip to India would be our last one together.

Long before the diagnosis we promised to take our adult children Katherine (36) and Alasdair (33) to India . We wanted to share our love for this country; immerse them in its industriousness and serenity, its culture and history and watch them react as the country stimulated all their senses at once. However, it was my son and my daughter and her husband Michael (36), who decided that this was the eleventh hour; if we were ever going to do this, we had to go soon.

We planned meticulously. Several friends had stayed at Bristows Haveli in Jaipur, a simple but beautiful guesthouse built within a courtyard with a secure door to the street. Atherton had previously gone missing on a trip to Sri Lanka and I was anxious not to have to engage another police manhunt this time.

So after enquiries with George, the owner, we booked for a week. This, we felt, would gently acclimatise Atherton to Rajasthan before embarking on a bespoke tour of the Golden Triangle that we’d organised through Trailfinders. We’d have local guides in each of the towns we visited and, after the train journey to Jodhpur, our own vehicle and driver.

The disease had taken away Atherton’s spatial awareness and his world was so limited to his internal life that he had no sense of danger. For someone in this condition, India’s busy cities were, on the face of it, ill-considered destinations. We threaded him through crowds, took our chances crossing six-lane highways, dodged rickshaws, cows and mangy dogs. It took all four of us to keep him safe, but we caught glimpses of the old Atherton that had been locked away for ages.

The hyper-stimulation from our surroundings meant he faded in and out of our trip, but we experienced moments of joy watching him belly laugh at the dodgem-style rickshaws, become mesmerised by temple rituals and appreciating the glorious architecture of the Taj Mahal. But at the same time heartbreaking, these moments of lucidity only emphasised the loss of someone who was funny, insightful and had an extraordinary curiosity for life.

At times we felt we were in a farce. My husband, like many people with Alzheimer’s, was a fiddler and a night wanderer. This resulted in me finding myself bolted into my bedroom. My only means of escape to go to the bathroom was to climb onto a chair and wedge my way through an internal window to emerge headfirst into an arrangement of exotic plants in my pyjamas. Having got out of the room, I couldn’t get back in and ended up sneaking around the eccentric layout of the guesthouse trying to break back into our suite.

The staff were wonderful, ever watchful of my husband without being intrusive. I felt there was a gentleness in their psyche that enabled them to instinctively understand how to treat him with compassion without being patronising.

Nikhil, the manager, arranged for us to go on a number of day trips. On one such trip into the Rajasthan desert, the youngsters and I wanted to go on a sunset camel ride and the guide volunteered to watch over my husband for us. What could go wrong? We left him in a fort with the guide. Of course, he managed to escape through a side door and was found wandering off down a track.

Our experience of India was enhanced by the intimacy of the tour. Early in the morning, we were taken to one guide’s family farm, where we were greeted with flowers, drums and a bottle of whisky. Later, we met the ladies of the family, who prepared a homestyle lunch for us: fragrant lamb curry with a golden dhal and a bowl of spiced greens and roti. We also lingered in the shade of a magical, lesser known fort on the outskirts of Jaipur, unvisited by other tours.

We were overwhelmed by the kindness we encountered. I’ll never forget the man in the jewellery emporium whose eyes welled up as he recognised the condition from the look in Atherton’s eyes. He told us his own mother had dementia. Instinctively, a guide would gently take hold of Atherton’s arm or a waiter would stand patiently waiting for a response.

It was a holiday full of poignant moments and laughter and we created so many memories. Atherton died aged 72 after three years spent in a care home. Looking back at the pictures, I notice how much I am smiling. We are certain Atherton was happy to be with those who loved him most and he was enlivened by India.

Travel Agent Sentenced for Embezzling Hundreds of Thousands From Canceled School Trips

A former travel agent convicted of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars paid by more than 150 parents for school trips that were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic was sentenced Monday to six months of home detention and six months of probation.

Marie Colette Martin, 53, was charged with spending funds she received on “personal expenses” instead of refunding parents after the trips were canceled.

The California Attorney General’s Office says Martin, who was based in San Diego, solicited travel funds from parents at nine different schools in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

The trips would have sent eighth-grade students from those schools to Washington D.C. and other East Coast locations in 2020, but the pandemic prevented the trips from happening.

Martin reportedly spent the money on personal costs instead, including credit card purchases, rent and artwork.

Prosecutors say she was unable to refund the parents because she had already been “experiencing cash flow problems and commingling client funds” and had used the parents’ funds for personal expenses.

Martin, who was jointly prosecuted by the California Attorney General’s Office and the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, pleaded guilty to one felony count of failure to return funds as a seller of travel.

She may later petition to have the count reduced to a misdemeanor.

The crime bars her from registering as a seller of travel for seven years, according to prosecutors.

Martin had already paid around $256,000 in restitution as of Monday’s sentencing hearing.

Prosecutors say some of that money will go to victims, while other victims have already been refunded through the Travel Consumer Restitution Corporation, which assists consumers who suffer losses for a variety of reasons, including failure of sellers to travel to provide services.
