Discover the wahoo spirit at university of virginia: your ultimate campus tour guide.

Welcome to the world of the Wahoos in Charlottesville, Virginia! The illustrious University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson, is a sight to behold. An emblem of neoclassical architecture, prestigious academia, and spirited student culture, the University of Virginia (UVA) defines Charlottesville. Let’s dive into the heart of UVA and embrace their motto — “Go Hoos”!

Explore the Grounds of The University of Virginia

Often referred to as “The Grounds”, UVA’s campus is the perfect blend of historical architecture, impressive academia, and lush green landscapes. Spread over a sprawling 1,682 acres clear of the hustle and bustle of downtown, the Grounds are home to several notable locales.

At the center of it all, Thomas Jefferson’s Academical Village offers a living-learning community. The village, surrounded by student residences and faculty housing, encourages interdisciplinary engagement. This home-away-from-home for faculty and students is guided by Jefferson’s philosophy that learning should extend beyond the classroom.

Presiding over the Academical village is the Rotunda , the iconic symbol of UVA. This architectural marvel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was inspired by Rome’s Pantheon. Serving initially as a library, the Rotunda now hosts university meetings, lectures, and student study groups. The Rotunda’s interior dome room, with its classical proportions, presents unquestionable beauty.

Iconic Architecture and More: Noteworthy Buildings at UVA

The University of Virginia’s blend of rich tradition and modern innovation is represented perfectly through its buildings. Below are a few you must explore:

Alderman Library : Housing countless scholarly works, the Alderman Library is a haven for the academic seeker. Boasting over two million volumes, Alderman is UVA’s main library. Its stately appearance and extensive literary collection draw countless bibliophiles.

The Chapel : Anchoring the bustling campus, the charming UVA Chapel offers serenity amidst the buzzing student life. Sporting a Gothic Revival-style design, the Chapel serves not only as a place of worship but also as a popular venue for small-size weddings and concerts.

Relishing the Athletic Spirit: UVA’s Sports Culture

UVA’s sports culture is driven by two simple words — Wahoo Pride. Games featuring the Cavaliers are energetic and passionate, providing an adrenaline rush like no other. Experience the thrill at:

Scott Stadium : Home to the UVA football team, the Scott Stadium provides the prototypical college football atmosphere. It’s an electrifying experience to join 60,000 others in cheering “Go Hoos!” under the stadium’s bright lights.

John Paul Jones Arena : From thrilling basketball games to live shows, John Paul Jones Arena is UVA’s premier event venue. Aptly named after the father of a lead UVA contributor, this state-of-the-art arena embodies Wahoo pride.

Taste and Chill at The Corner

Just across the street from UVA Grounds lies bustling “The Corner,” a community hotspot for students and faculty. Explore this &-block stretch offering unique boutiques, cozy bookshops, and tantalizing eateries.

Bodo’s Bagels : Start your day with a cup of hot coffee and fresh, hand-rolled bagels from Bodo’s Bagels . Customer favorites include the ‘everything bagel with bacon, egg and cheddar’ and the ‘plain bagel with lox spread’.

Boylen Heights : Craving a plump, juicy burger? Head over to Boylen Heights and create your own perfect burger combination. Its friendly atmosphere caters to sports fans intending to catch a good game on their widescreen TVs.

Delve into UVA’s Cultural offerings: Museums and Exhibitions

UVA’s rich selection of museums cater to every art and history enthusiast.

Fralin Museum of Art : Housing Italian Renaissance art to American Indian art, the Fralin Museum of Art offers a diverse range of artwork. The museum houses not only rotating exhibitions but also the UVA’s permanent art collection.

Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library : Home to an impressive archive of rare books, manuscripts and maps, the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library is a historian’s dream. Noteworthy in its collections are a copy of the Proclamation of Independence and the archives of Virginia gentry families.

Experiencing UVA: A Day as a Wahoo

Ever wondered what life as a UVA student encompasses? Start your day at Grit Coffee with a caffeine fix, then head to an engaging lecture in one of UVA’s historical buildings. Take a moment to enjoy the serene, natural beauty of The Lawn, and bask in the Colonial Revival-style Pavilion gardens.

Annual Festivals on UVA’s Campus: Time to celebrate

UVA plays host to exciting events round the year. From musical concerts to film festivals, each event paints a vibrant hue on the Ground’s usual tranquility.

Foxfield Races : The Foxfield Races is UVA’s springtime tradition. Gather alongside fellow Wahoos to enjoy the thrilling horse races followed by a decadent picnic.

Virginia Film Festival : Sharing the stage with renowned filmmakers, the Virginia Film Festival is a cinematic treat. Join in the fall with film enthusiasts as they explore contemporary cinema and engage in enlightening discussions.

As we wrap up our comprehensive tour of UVA, it’s important to remember the diversity and unique spirit of the community that permeates these Grounds. Beyond the obvious historical significance and architectural brilliance, what resonates is the spirit of the Wahoos – intense, vivacious, and proud. So, whether you’re a prospective student, a visiting academic, or a tourist exploring Charlottesville, UVA offers rich and rewarding experiences at every turn. Ready to join in on the Wahoo spirit?

I was born in Charlottesville, Virginia and after college, I moved to San Francisco to explore new opportunities and broaden my horizons. I fell in love with the city's vibrant culture and unique atmosphere, but eventually, I moved again, this time to Austin, Texas.

As much as I loved living in different parts of the country, having a baby boy brought me back to my hometown in Charlottesville, where I now live with my husband, our little one, and two furry friends. I enjoy going to wineries, taking my pups everywhere, and spending quality time with my family.

Nice drive through a beautiful campus

UVA is right in Charlottesville and we just took the time to drive through the campus. The buildings are just gorgeous. The main building with the rotunda which is so famous in photos is undergoing a major renovation and was covered in scaffolding. I am sure it will be lovely when done. We were very surprised at the size of the campus. The student dorms, at least from the outside, are just lovely as are the rest of the buildings. The football stadium is cool too. Take the time to drive through UVA. It is worth it.

I was very impressed with the service, appt promtness, friendliness, concern, & care experienced at both of these Centers. While it takes a bit of time to get an appt with my doctor, I found it worth the wait with the exam/evaluation being unrushed. Obtaining an appt with Imaging was faster and service/care/friendliness equally commendable.

We went to an all-day seminar at UVa on the Civil War, and spent our breaks strolling this beautiful campus. It's humbling to think that Thomas Jefferson founded this university almost 200 years ago (1819). Well done, TJ.

My son works here, and it was our first visit to grounds. All I can say is that he is so lucky to go to work in such beautiful surroundings. Unfortunately the rotunda was undergoing some repair work, but there was still plenty to see.

We always enjoy strolling thru the UVA campus, especially Thomas Jefferson's 200 year old "Academical Village" with the rotunda, main lawn area and gardens inside the serpentine brick walls surrounded by the unique housing for some students and faculty.

My son graduated from UVA. He received a fabulous education, and grew as a a young man. I think he would have stayed forever if he could. Despite the bad press lately, UVA is a great blend of a melting pot of high achievers and the room to grow, as college should be. But aside from al that, it is a beautiful campus worth a stop for any traveler. The gardens are maintained by various garden clubs and not only are they amazingly gorgeous, they are used! Students and visitors alike can visit and enjoy. Perfect for an afternoon reading break, quick picnic, or garden party. Everyone should see these at least once, they are truly hidden gems. When my son walked me through his favorites, I felt as if I had entered the "secret garden".

12 Must-See Places At UVA

uva driving tour

With Spring rapidly approaching and the Rotunda looking more beautiful than ever, families will soon begin to make the drive, whether it’s seven hours or 30 minutes, to what Niche calls the fifth best big college in the country .

While the University of Virginia is not offering any tours at the moment, here are several places on Grounds all prospective students should visit independently before making the decision to apply.

1. The Rotunda

uva driving tour

The Rotunda is an obvious choice, but it is obvious for a reason. This building that is constantly associated with the University and its designer Thomas Jefferson, is widely recognized as a hub for student life. Regardless of their year, students are drawn to this renowned building, one that is filled with historic architecture and study spaces that offer anyone who enters them a sense of solidarity with the students surrounding them.

2. The Lawn

uva driving tour

Even more impressive than the Rotunda is the lawn that peacefully sits directly in front of it. Referred to by every student quite literally, ‘ the Lawn ’, this wide open, green space is a perfect way to observe and gain a holistic view of the student body. The Lawn is an eclectic meeting place where students gather year round to eat, play a sport, do work, listen to music, hold club meetings and everything in between.

3. Madison Bowl

uva driving tour

Another popular meeting place and another crucial stop on this personalized tour is called Madison Bowl . Along Rugby Road, “Mad Bowl” is a symbol of Greek Life, one of the prominent social gathering places for these groups on campus. Greek Life has been a part of The University of Virginia since 1852. There are currently 32 fraternities on grounds and 15 sororities. If these organizations are not for you, take a trip to The Corner instead. The Corner in Charlottesville is filled with different restaurants, bars, shops, and other places for students to meet.

After visiting these cannot-miss sites, there are some lesser-known spaces that first-years have come to love:

4. Einstein Bros. Bagels

uva driving tour

Einstein Bros. Bagels is a bagel chain and while it’s not Bodo’s, this bagel shop, located in both the Newcomb Bookstore and Rice Hall, is a location that many first- year students frequent. With the patio outside, students can get work done or finish their everything bagel before class.

5. Beta Bridge

uva driving tour

Beta Bridge is a longstanding tradition at the University. It is an outlet for students to express themselves by painting a message on the bridge.

6. The Fralin Museum of Art

uva driving tour

The Fralin Museum of Art at UVA , while closed now, is another unique and creative place on Grounds. It is a museum filled with contemporary art.

7. Food Trucks

uva driving tour

There are also other popular places to eat on campus. The Food Trucks by The Amphitheater are where many first-years go to get food when they lack the motivation to eat dining hall food. Many also work beside it in the amphitheater when it is warmer outside.

8. Newcomb Starbucks

uva driving tour

The Starbucks near Newcomb Dining Hall, which accepts Flex Dollars , is another place where students study, take classes, or sit on the patio while eating. Newcomb Dining Hall itself is also a great place to visit. It’s one of the main dining halls on campus along with O’Hill and Runk.

9. The Aquatic & Fitness Center

uva driving tour

The Aquatic Fitness Center or the AFC is a great place to see students working out and staying active. For UVA students it’s very important that they stay active, which is also reflected in the intramural sports clubs on campus.

10. Memorial To Enslaved Laborers

uva driving tour

The University’s Memorial to Enslaved Laborers is a new addition to Grounds and as stated by the President’s Commission on Slavery and the University, is meant to “capture the tenure of those community conversations, honor the lives, labor, and resistance of the 4 to 5000 enslaved people who lived and worked at UVA at some point between 1817 and 1865.”

11. The Library

uva driving tour

When it is cold and people need a place to work, many students spend hours at the libraries on Grounds. While Alderman is currently under construction, both the Clemons Library   (affectionately known to students as “Clem” )  and the Charles L. Brown Science & Engineering Library (also known as the “Brown Library” ) are both great spaces to study.

12. Scott Stadium

uva driving tour

If you are not tired from visiting each of these amazing places on Grounds, take a drive past Scott Stadium . This massive arena makes you feel as though you are a part of something larger than yourself, which is exactly what The University of Virginia is all about.

With the COVID-19 pandemic making these locations emptier than usual, it’s a great time to mask up and explore these places safely. Here’s our Guide to Grounds series if you prefer to tour the University in the comfort of your home!

Budgeting tips for summertime travel

42% will drive instead of fly to save money.

(InvestigateTV) — Around 91% of people planning a summer vacation are looking for ways to save on their travel , according to a new survey by  NerdWallet .

Cherry Dale with the Virginia Credit Union said there are many ways to save on trips.

“Where are you going? How are you traveling? How are you going to get there? Might it be cheaper to drive versus flying even though flying would be faster,” Dale said. “So, you’re weighing the opportunity cost of all of those decisions. Ultimately, keeping that budget in mind.”

She suggested using third-party search services like  Priceline or  Expedia  to map out potential costs and find the best deals.

Dale also advised travelers to create a realistic travel budget and to start setting money aside right away from each paycheck.

“There are costs that add up every single day that sometimes we do not budget for, and to keep in mind per person as well,” Dale noted. “So, how many people are you taking? How many are you feeding? And what are the needs of each vacationer? Because it is going to be different. Some people might want to do costly excursions, whereas other people on the vacation just want to stay at the hotel and relax.”

She advised people to carry multiple payment methods on the trip and said to alert your credit company of travel ahead of time.

Dale also recommended that people avoid tourist traps and learn from the locals. Locals can share restaurants they love that may be cheaper than the famous restaurants in the area.

Pair shot in dirt bike drive-by in northwest Miami-Dade

Chris Gothner , Digital Journalist

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A suspect riding a dirt bike pulled up on a vehicle, opened fire and wounded two men in the Pinewood area of northwest Miami-Dade Friday evening, according to police.

Police said it happened just after 7 p.m. in the area of Northwest Seventh Avenue and 95th Street, just west of Interstate 95.

Detective Argemis Colome, a spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Police Department, said both men were “struck in their outer extremities” and hospitalized in “stable” condition.

Local 10 News was there as one of the victims arrived at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Colome said the suspect fled the area after shooting the two men.

Authorities haven’t yet said if they’ve identified the suspect or a motive.

Analysis: A year after PGA Tour’s surprise deal with Saudis, still no clarity on where golf is going

The Associated Press

June 4, 2024, 2:59 PM

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — PGA champion Xander Schauffele was on the 10th tee at Muirfield Village for a late Monday afternoon practice round to start the week of the Memorial. Just the sight of him was enough to bring back memories of golf then and now.

So much has changed. So little is known. And there’s still no clarity where golf is headed and how to repair such a splintered sport created by Saudi money and a secret deal .

It was a year ago at the Memorial that Schauffele was playing nine holes of the Wednesday pro-am, starting on the 10th tee. Two of his amateur partners that day were PGA Tour board members — Ed Herlihy, the board chairman, and Jimmy Dunne.

Unbeknownst to Schauffele — unbeknownst to every PGA Tour player — was that Dunne and Herlihy, along with PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, had been secretly meeting with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia , the financial backers of the rival LIV Golf circuit that already had lured away some of golf’s biggest names with guaranteed riches.

The pro-am was on May 31. The famous “framework agreement” for a commercial deal among the PGA Tour, PIF and the European tour had been signed on May 30.

Most curious was when Herlihy saw a familiar face and suggested a phone call in the near future because “we have a lot of good things coming.”

It wasn’t until six days later that Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the PIF governor, appeared on CNBC to announce that former enemies were now in business together . It remains one of the most stunning developments in golf — not just making the deal with the Saudis, but keeping the entire membership (and the majority of the PGA Tour board) in the dark.

That was June 6, 2023. It’s rare in golf for anything to be identified by a date.

Monahan flew from New York to the Canadian Open for a player meeting later that day and was blistered by players who wanted answers.

A year later, does anyone have them?

For all the moving parts — and there have been plenty — what often gets overlooked is one important aspect to the framework agreement. While it was never finalized by the end of 2023, the stated deadline, it did away with the antitrust lawsuit by PIF-funded LIV and the countersuit by the PGA Tour. The tour already was said to have spent close to $50 million in legal fees.

The rest of the road forward has trudged uphill (still no commercial deal with PIF).

And it has moved quickly and quirkily.

Tiger Woods was appointed to the board with no term limits. Rory McIlroy resigned from the board and then was put back into play as a non-voting member of a negotiating committee , but only after a failed attempt for him to replace Webb Simpson .

From the business side, Randall Stephenson of AT&T resigned from the board abruptly last summer over the proposed deal with the Saudis. In the last month alone, Dunne and board member Mark Flaherty resigned.

It’s a lot easier to keep track of birdies and bogeys.

There were two Senate hearings. The agreement got the attention of the Justice Department, which led to both sides in July doing away with an anti-poaching clause in the agreement. Four months later, Jon Rahm was on his way to LIV .

The new for-profit company known as PGA Tour Enterprises received interest from private equity, and the tour narrowed its list of suitors to Strategic Sports Group by the end of the year. SSG, a group of North American pro sports owners led by Fenway Sports Group, announced a $1.5 billion investment that could be twice that much.

The tour is still negotiating for PIF to become a minority investor, but it took until March before players on the PGA Tour Enterprises board even met with Al-Rumayyan .

Jordan Spieth is on the board. He replaced McIlroy, who resigned in November. Spieth said two weeks ago that any suggestions that negotiations are “in a bad place and are moving slowly” are not true.

“I think ultimately we’ll end up in a place where professional golf is maybe the best that it’s ever been. I think both sides believe that,” he said at Colonial.

Still no details. No clear road map.

It was Spieth who said in late January that with SSG as an investor, he didn’t think a deal was needed with PIF except for unification in the sport. That put him at odds with McIlroy, who wants desperately for golf’s best players to be brought back together more than four times a year at the majors.

There even is friction inside the PGA Tour — lingering bad feelings toward Monahan for going behind the players’ backs, and even which players were worth how much under a first-of-its-kind program that distributed $930 million in equity shares .

Perhaps the biggest change from a year ago is players now have a majority voice on the board. The argument has always been that while it’s their tour, the players are more skilled with a 4-iron than running a business valued to be worth upward of $10 billion.

But the bigger question is what exactly do they want? Where is golf headed, and how does it get put back together?

Schauffele made the biggest putt of his life to win the PGA Championship by one shot over Bryson DeChambeau, who reminded golf fans what they’ve been missing. He’s an entertainer. Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship last year and was put on the Ryder Cup team with 11 players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour.

Koepka, DeChambeau, Rahm, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson are still only available to watch on CW, the app or the network.

They are in Houston this week if anyone was wondering.
