Check out Trek-Segafredo’s Trek Emonda for 2023
First Published Jan 31, 2023
The Trek-Segafredo men’s and women’s teams will be dividing the vast majority of their time between the Trek Madone SLR aero road bike and this lightweight Trek Émonda SLR in 2023. Let’s take a closer look at the Émonda…
The current Émonda has been around for over two years now – doesn’t time fly? – with Trek calling this incarnation its fastest-climbing bike ever.
> Check out our story from when the current Trek Emonda was launched
The Émonda has always been the lightweight road bike in Trek’s range, but the US brand also focused on aerodynamics in the development of the latest model.
> Trek releases radical Madone SLR, its “fastest road race bike ever”
The designers say they spent most time working on the front end of the bike – the bar/stem, head tube and down tube – because that’s where you can make most aero gains, testing both with and without a water bottle in place.
Trek says that the flagship Émonda SLR platform is 60 seconds per hour faster than its predecessor on flat roads – in other words, on the older bike it would take you 61 minutes to ride as far as you could in 60 minutes on the newer one – and 18 seconds per hour faster on an 8% gradient (Trek’s notional rider upon which these figures are based is 70kg and puts out 350 watts for the hour).
Trek says that the Émonda SLR isn’t as aerodynamically efficient as its Madone platform but that it's marginally ahead of the Domane endurance bike.
Using deep-section tubes adds weight over round tubes so the current Émonda SLR that Trek-Segafredo riders use is slightly heavier than the previous model, but the frame still comes in under 700g. The designers say that the slight weight penalty is still worth it for the net gain in speed in most circumstances thanks to improved aero efficiency.
In order to hit its weight, strength and stiffness targets for this bike, Trek says it had to use a new kind of carbon fibre within the layup – which it calls 800 Series OCLV carbon.
Trek isn’t keen on giving away too many secrets but says that from a fibre-type perspective, OCLV 800 is 30% stronger than the material it uses for its OCLV 700.
Trek-Segafredo riders use handlebars, stems, seat posts and saddles from Trek’s in-house Bontrager brand.
The bar and stem are separate units here and the hoses for the hydraulic disc brakes run externally before entering the frame at the top of the head tube.
There are no gear cables or wires to worry about because Trek-Segafredo riders use SRAM Red eTap AXS groupsets with wireless shifting. They also use Quarq SRAM Red AXS Power Meters.
Team riders can choose between 48/35, 50/37, 52/39 and 54/41-tooth chainsets and 10-28 or 10-33 12-speed cassettes.
> Check out our SRAM Red eTap AXS First Ride Review
The wheels are from Bontrager: RSL37, RSL51 or RSL62, depending on the terrain, conditions, and rider preference. The number in the name refers to the rim depth in millimetres. All of these wheels use DT Swiss 240s internals with Ratchet EXP 36-point engagement.
The wheels are fitted with Pirelli P-Zero tyres. The team uses tubeless, clinchers, and tubulars.
The team use Time XPro-10 pedals, Time being a brand that’s now owned by SRAM, and Wahoo Elemnt Bolt and Roam bike computers.

Interesting to see the pro team bikes are sans integrated bars. I know people who have started to get replacement bars from trek after the recall. I decided to keep mine instead of getting the temp replacement but to see the team with a different set up raises eyebrows.

It's possible that the reason is that many pros will use 150-170mm stems with narrow bars, it's not worth tooling up to manufacture the whole assembly for that size, which hardly anyone will buy, whereas it's possibly cheaper/easier to do smaller runs of longer stem & narrow bars separately.

Trek-Segafredo to become Lidl-Trek from Tour de France onwards
US WorldTour and Women's WorldTour teams rebrand from June 30
Trek-Segafredo men's and women's teams are set to rebrand ahead of this year's Tour de France and Giro d'Italia Donne after attracting major new title sponsorship from supermarket chain Lidl.
The move reported at the start of May has now been confirmed by the team in an announcement issued on Tuesday. The rebrand to Lidl-Trek will come into being on June 30, just before the Giro Donne and the men's and women's Tours.
The exact duration of the team's deal with Lidl hasn't been confirmed, though reports have suggested that the sponsorship would run beyond the 2024 season. Italian coffee company Segafredo will move away from its title sponsorship role, the team confirmed.
"We are excited to work with a team that is committed not only to excellence in cycling but also to the sustainable development of athletes in a family team culture," said Lidl board member Jeroen Bal.
Jumbo review plans for post-2024 cycling sponsorship Soudal-QuickStep reveal new 2023 colours, confirm five-year sponsorship Scicon blasts Astana's 'ethics' as Mark Cavendish 'compromises' sponsorship deal
"We are convinced that healthy nutrition and an active lifestyle – shaped by sports and exercise – strengthen people's well-being. Just as our Lidl products are accessible to everyone, cycling is a sport for everyone and suitable for anyone who wants to be more active in everyday life. We want to share this message with as many people as possible."
The team, which traces its roots to the Leopard Trek outfit that began in 2011, have been on the lookout for a new title sponsor with Segafredo's contract due to expire at the end of 2023.
Segafredo joined in 2016 and renewed for another three years in 2019 as the women's squad was launched, before adding another two years from 2022. The reports indicate that Segafredo will step aside early to allow Lidl to begin their backing at the time of maximum exposure at the Tour de France.

This is not Lidl's first involvement in professional cycling. The German-based supermarket company, which has a strong presence throughout Europe, was a co-sponsor of the QuickStep team from 2016 to 2021 and is a current partner of the Flanders Classics series of Spring races, including the Tour of Flanders.
The terms of Lidl's sponsorship are not yet known but Het Laatste Nieuws has suggested there will be "a hefty budget increase".
The men's team, who were 12th in the 2022 UCI rankings and currently sit sixth in the 2023 standings, only have 11 riders under contract for 2024, with room to manoeuvre in the transfer market.
Giulio Ciccone is one of the team's key leaders, along with the Classics pairing of Mads Pedersen and Jasper Stuyven. The veteran Bauke Mollema is on a long-term deal, while 22-year-old Mattias Skjelmose is making his breakthrough at the top level and Belgian talent Thibau Nys is perhaps not far behind.
The women's team have just as many riders on board, with 11 of their 14-strong roster under contract through 2024. Team leaders include former road race world champions Lizzie Deignan and Elisa Balsamo , current time trial world champion Ellen van Dijk, plus Elisa Long Borghini and up-and-coming talents in Shirin van Anrooij and Gaia Realini.

New and unreleased Trek Domane spotted ahead of Paris-Roubaix under Trek-Segafredo
Major changes include elimination of the seat mast, front IsoSpeed and adjustment on rear IsoSpeed.
Trek-Segafredo riders have a new version of the Trek Domane bike ahead of Paris-Roubaix and Paris-Roubaix Femmes , which is a significant departure from the current endurance bike.
Major changes include the elimination of the seat mast, the front IsoSpeed, and the adjustment feature for the rear IsoSpeed. IsoSpeed is Trek’s name for a pivoting junction designed to offer vertical flex without lateral movement — in other words, comfort without a sacrifice in handling.
Trek is not commenting on the new bike, but there are other things we can deduce by looking at the photos taken from just after a Paris-Roubaix Femmes reconnaissance ride.
The head tube junction is substantially deeper towards the rear, presumably in response to the UCI’s relaxation of the 3:1 ratio rule, and the down tube appears to be taller and more aero towards the top. The down tube appears to have retained the storage compartment under the bottle cage.
The internal routing remains, but has been moved in front of the steerer tube instead of behind it as on the current Domane.
Check out the photos below for a closer look and more speculation based on the imagery.
The integrated seatmast has been a mainstay of Trek’s aero Madone, lightweight Emonda, and endurance Domane for years. This unreleased Domane abandons that in favor of a standard seatpost.
On Chloe Hosking’s bike, at least, the new Domane appears to have a sloping top tube, too. Hosking is 5’3″.
Here is Lizzie Deignan’s 2022 Domane compared with Hosking’s unreleased and presumably 2023 Domane. Note the differences at the head tube, rear IsoSpeed, seat mast/seatpost, and down tube.
The new Domane also does not have an adjustable rear IsoSpeed the way the current bike does. When explaining the absence of IsoSpeed adjustment on the latest Checkpoint gravel bike, Trek road director Jordan Roessingh told VeloNews that the company had found that riders — pros and amateurs alike — simply don’t use that feature. And presumably, the removal of this feature also means weight savings.
This is the adjustable IsoSpeed on the current Domane.
And this is the underside of the new Domane.
This is the front IsoSpeed on the current Domane.
And this is the IsoSpeed-free front end of the Domane the Trek-Segafredo riders are using.
In terms of Roubaix-specific build, there are certainly many carry-overs from 2021 to 2022, including the single ring with K-Edge chain guard, tubeless Pirelli tires, and SRAM satellite shifters.
All the Trek-Segafredo women had the single-ring/K-Edge set-up on their Paris-Roubaix Femmes bikes, and some have SRAM’s new wireless Blip shifters as well.
We have many questions about this bike, but Trek is not yet talking.
It seems likely the a new, lighter Trek Domane that still has plenty of compliance will be launched later this year. We’ll let you know more as soon as we do.

The Trek Segafredo 2023 kit is based on the 2022 kit but with some design additions. The men's team kit keeps the red while the women's kit remains blue. The jersey is white with a stripe across the chest where Trek is still rendered in white. The sleeves are red or blue. A design detail added to the rear of the jerseys is a repeating pattern of alternating lines and chquered pattern.
The bibshorts and bibtights are black with the bibshorts having a coloured stripe on the leg ends. The repeating pattern used on the back of the jersey is also used on the straps of the bibshorts and bibtights.

Focussing On 2023 Season
During the 2022-2023 inter-season, the Trek – Segafredo team had five riders leaving the team for some Continental squads. Only three new riders joined the Trek – Segafredo team for the 2023 season.
They are the 2023 U23 Cyclocross World Champion, Thibau Nys (ex- Baloise – Trek Lions), Natnael Tesfatsion (ex- Drone Hopper – Androni Giocattoli), and Mathias Vacek (ex- Gazprom – RusVelo).
Trek – Segafredo is a WorldTour team and its UCI abbreviation TFS on UCI races.
STUYVEN Jasper, PEDERSEN Mads, LIEPIŅŠ Emīls, VACEK Mathias, KIRSCH Alex, THEUNS Edward, and HOOLE Daan are racing Paris-Roubaix 2023 .
Mads Pedersen, Jasper Stuyven, Natnael Tesfatsion, Alex Kirsch, Julio Ciccone, Dario Cataldo, and Bauke Mollema are chasing some stages win on the Giro d’Italia 2023 .
Mattias Skjelmose, Mads Pedersen, Jasper Stuyven, Juan Pedro López (aka Juanpe), Alex Kirsch, and Bauke Mollema are chasing the Maillot Jaune on the Tour de France 2023 .

Trek 2023 Road Bikes
As the sponsor indicates, the Trek – Segafredo Cycling Team races on Trek road bikes. The main road bikes are the Trek Emonda for mountain races, Trek Domane on races like the Paris-Roubaix, and the Trek Madone for the sprinters and fast-rolling hills races.
The Trek road bikes of the Trek – Segafredo team are assembled with the Sram Red eTap AXS 12-speed groupset tuned with Kogel Ceramic bearings.
The wheels are the Bontrager Aeolus , which is the components brand of Trek, and rolling on Pirelli P-Zero tubeless and tubular tires. Obviously, the rim heights and tire types and sizes depend on the race’s profile.
The bikes are lubricated, and the chains are waxed with Split Second lubricants line.
The Trek – Segafredo rider’s three contact points are a Bontrager handlebar/stem combo wrapped with Bontrager bar tape, a Bontrager saddle, and the Time XPro pedals , which Sram acquired in 2022.
The live data coming from the Quark Power Meter , Core body temperature sensor, and Wahoo heart rate monitor are monitored on the Wahoo Elemnt GPS cycling computer.
The riders of Trek – Segafredo Cycling Team wear Trek helmets, 100% sunglasses, Santini team cycling jerseys, bib-shorts, gloves, and socks. The whole team wears Bontrager cycling shoes, in white color, of course.

TREK-SEGAFREDO PEDALS INTO 2023 ON TIME
Men’s and women’s worldtour teams partnership..
Time Pedals expands its presence at the pinnacle of professional cycling with a new multiyear agreement to be the exclusive pedal supplier for Trek-Segafredo men’s and women’s WorldTour teams.
The agreement, part of SRAM’s partnership with Trek, marks the return of Time to the men’s WorldTour and the expansion of its pedals to now three women’s WorldTour teams. Trek-Segafredo joins Canyon//SRAM Racing and Team SD Worx in riding Time. An accomplished and iconic clipless pedal pioneer, Time pedals were ever-present winners in pro cycling in the 1980s through the 2000s, with legends including Greg LeMond, Miguel Indurain, and Tom Boonen, who relied on Time.
“Time is proud to support this first-class WorldTour team for the coming seasons. It’s a huge step for us to return to the biggest races with Trek-Segafredo,” said Benjamin Marinier, Time Pedals product manager. “Time Pedals are the best in many aspects, such as lightweight, aerodynamic, comfort, adjustments, or floats. We spent much time with the athletes to set up everything according to their needs.”
Time Xpresso Pedals VS. Look Keo Blade
“There is no better demonstration of the quality and performance of a pedal than a WorldTour team who has so many choices in selecting them for their use. We are excited to see what Trek-Segafredo can accomplish on arguably the most proven pedal system in the world,” said SRAM CEO Ken Lousberg.
Trek-Segafredo will ride Time XPRO Pedals, engineered with a focus on the rider. Time road pedals feature ICLIC Technology for easy entry, low stack height for improved efficiency, a large pedal platform for improved power transfer, and float and Q-factor clears to reduce strain and prevent injuries.

The ultimate race bike Our fastest road race bike ever From a legacy of greatness comes a new standard of speed. Seven generations in the making, Madone SLR is our fastest and lightest Madone disc ever, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with a triple threat of unprecedented aerodynamics, exceptional ride quality, and lightweight design. This race-ready bike is complete with never-before-seen IsoFlow technology that gives you every advantage in speed and handling.
“Trek’s seventh generation Madone blends radical design and performance” What the world is saying about the all-new Madone
“A pure-bred race bike"
“Does an exceptional job of balancing all-day comfort with the agility and aggression needed to be a top-tier race bike.”
“Every inch an aero race bike”
"One of the most visually striking and competent aero bikes available today [...] more aero, less weight, less complication."
“It doesn’t just look damn fast; it is damn fast”
“Seems to crave speed […] and the handling remains responsive at high speeds without lacking in stability.”
“Phenomenally fast and provides one heck of a thrilling ride”
“Offers all the aero tweaks and outright performance without compromising on day-to-day ridability.”
A new standard of speed Now 60 seconds/hour faster* We set out to make Madone the fastest road bike in the world. Years of research and development informed every aerodynamic inch of the seventh generation Madone SLR to create a frame, cockpit, and rider position that’s a whopping 19 watts faster than ever before.* *Compared to previous generation at 45km/h

Nearly 300 grams lighter*
60 seconds/hour faster* .
Never-before-seen IsoFlow technology Brutal performance. Total comfort. All-new IsoFlow technology soaks up fatiguing bumps in the road so you can ride stronger longer. A race-focused evolution of IsoSpeed comfort, IsoFlow flexes over bumps for a smoother ride, improves aerodynamics, and shaves weight to save precious seconds in the saddle.
Unprecedented road bike aerodynamics The devil is in the details when it comes to heart-pounding, race-winning speed. Every element of the new Madone Gen 7 was expertly sculpted to create our most aerodynamic road race bike ever, including a new generation of Kammtail tube shapes, an aero-optimized cockpit, and all-new IsoFlow technology that smooths air as it moves over the bike and accelerates it through the frame for even more free speed.
Positioned for power Ergonomic and aerodynamic riding position An overhauled bar/stem with a shorter reach and hoods that are 3cm narrower than the drops move you into a more comfortable ergonomic riding position.
