Kentucky Derby 7-Day RV Rally

It’s the most exciting two minutes in sports! Since 1875, the city of Louisville, Kentucky, has celebrated the first Saturday in May with the ‘Run for the Roses’ – the Kentucky Derby! And it’s not just a two-minute race – this charming city offers an entire plethora of activities during Derby week, all building up to that moment the announcer roars, ‘And they’re off!’

The Kentucky Derby has a rich and fascinating history. In 1872, Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. (the grandson of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition) returned to Kentucky from England and France where he had experienced some famous horse races. His dream of creating a similar event in Louisville became a reality three years later when, in front of an estimated crowd of 10,000 people, a field of 15 three-year-old horses contested the first Kentucky Derby.

Clark sought to transform American racetracks from places associated with immorality and vice to venues that might attract a wealthier, nobler clientele. With the help of his wife, he went on a campaign throughout Louisville to convince his target audience that the new race track was, in fact, a place for the upper-class.

You too can be part of both the excitement and traditions of the Kentucky Derby by participating in Fantasy RV Tours’ Kentucky Derby RV Rally. Our rally takes place at the Kentucky Expo Center, conveniently located in the city of Louisville, with public shuttle transportation to Churchill Downs on race days. The Rally begins with an orientation and a get-acquainted party, then we depart for dinner, cruising the Ohio River aboard the Belle of Louisville , a steamboat built in 1914 and a piece of living American history.

All this is followed up with another southern-style dinner, complete with Derby favorite delicacies, live entertainment and a tour of the picturesque Lexington area.

Day 3 dawns, and it’s a special day for us. We begin with breakfast on Millionaire’s Row at Churchill Downs, where we celebrate ‘Dawn at the Downs,’ watching racehorses at their early morning workouts. If we’re lucky, we’ll see some of the Derby contenders exercising – our first chance to perhaps pick a winner! We leave Churchill Downs for a city tour of Louisville, including the fascinating Historical District, the largest preservation district in the United States to feature almost entirely Victorian architecture. The homes and buildings in this neighborhood are almost all made of brick, and the district contains the highest number of residences with stained-glass windows in the country.

Every day is Derby Day at the Kentucky Derby Museum, featuring three floors of interactive displays commemorating some of the best Derby races in history. Here, we’ll view a gigantic Theater in the Round presentation, moving on to the Derby Dinner Playhouse for a delightful meal with lights, camera, action – a professionally produced live Broadway show.

Fantasy gives us an open day on Friday. We can further explore Louisville, participate in more Derby Festival activities in town or, if we just can’t get enough horse racing, head to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Oaks. It’s easy to get there – just hop on one of the shuttles running every few minutes from our camping area. And once there, it’s a full day of racing but definitely less crowded than Derby Day itself. The infamous Oaks race is restricted to fillies only.

After a Goodbye continental breakfast the following morning, it’s time to head for home or on to further adventures.

Love the Flint Creek Water Park

We were so excited to see needed renovations being done to the cabins, bathhouses and camping areas. The Park had been cleaned up & we throughly enjoyed our recent visit. They have new management. So excited about the new disc golf area. We didn’t try it but will be back in June.

fantasy rv tours mississippi

The cabins and bunk houses were nice when they were first built., but not anymore! Both cabins and bunk houses are filthy with roaches and mold, some light fixtures haven't been repaired in many years, the broken refrigerator remained, and the used smaller one was placed next to it! The park keeps booking and taking in money but putting zero into keeping up with Maintenace and updating the housing. I've been camping and then renting cabins there for about 40 years but won't subject my family and friends to this kind of embarrassment anymore. Flint Creek please Clean up your act!

We went to Flint Creek in early fall, and it was beautiful. It's a perfect place for families and for RV camping. The tent camping areas leave a little to be desired. They don't have bathrooms nearby.

fantasy rv tours mississippi

Never staying at Flint Creek ever again. Paid a lot of money for2 nights in an A Frame cabin. The cabin smelled horribly of mold & mildew. No hot water, the beds were the cheapest mattress we’ve ever slept on. Was told it had a queen bed…no, it was smaller than a full. Outside by the lake we’re beer cans and trash everywhere, Barely any cooking pan…worst stay in my life. We called the front office and they did not seem to care. Next time I’ll go elsewhere and read reviews..a complete waste of our time & money,

I must agree with most posts here. The park should be condemned by the State, revamped and restored to its once glory! It has been horribly neglected. Whomever manages these PHWD parks needs to be fired or put in jail for embezzling funds because they are not being put back into the park. The bathhouses reek of urine odor, some the lights don’t work, showers missing knobs or controls and no soap to wash hands. They were so repulsive that even my grandkids cried to not want to enter them. I’m not a fan of the new golf cart craze in campgrounds because they are just a nuisance. Parents used to take their kids bike riding, hiking, walks but now they let them roam free on a golf cart by themselves or with an adult drinking a beer lol. Other campers here were polite and friendly, the kids were young enough to not notice the lack of maintenance and neglect thank God. Unfortunately this will be our last visit here until there is a major revamp. I intend on visiting and writing the home office and seeing what they have to say about there care of this once beautiful place.

We booked into the primitive campsite & it was the worse primitive campsite we have EVER stayed in. The place was filthy, the porta potties were filled to the top. There were only 2 of them for the big space. The picnic tables , not only the lack of them but the ones that were there were broken down. We gathered 3 bags of garbage before we could even set up. I would not recommend this spot for even walking your dog never mind camping in!

Visit Meridian, MDOT welcome visitors to Mississippi

May 25—Lauderdale County's tourism arm, Visit Meridian, joined forces with the Mississippi Department of Transportation Thursday to welcome visitors to Mississippi at the state welcome center near Toomsuba.

The event, which was held as part of National Travel and Tourism Week, featured live music, refreshments and an opportunity to hear from some of Meridian's historic characters as members of the Rose Hill Company of Players brought the icons to life through reenactment.

Brad Hampton, who assumed his role as Lewis Ragsdale, one of Meridian's founders, regaled visitors with the story of the city's origins and the feud between the two city planners, Ragsdale and John T. Ball. While Ragsdale sought to lay out roads using compass points, he said, Ball was determined to build the town in relation to the railroad that ran through the area.

More than 160 years later, the impact of the feud still lingers in the disjointed orientation of downtown streets, Hampton said.

Hampton was joined by fellow Rose Hill member and Meridian Railroad Museum Executive Director Anne McKee, who played the role of a woman living in Meridian in the early 1900s.

Marion Ivy, manager of the Mississippi Welcome Bureau, said Lauderdale County's welcome center sees some of the highest traffic of all the state's welcome centers. During the 2023 fiscal year, more than 1.6 million visitors stopped at welcome centers throughout the state, he said.

"This year's theme for National Travel and Tourism Week is, 'Travel powers the economy,'" he said. "That couldn't be more true."

Ivy said Lauderdale County's welcome center staff works hard to make sure visitors to the Magnolia State find the information and services they need to make their stay a success. Often, he said, that means helping between 1,500-1,700 visitors each month.

"They are amazing, and they make me look good," he said.

Central District Transportation Commissioner Willie Simmons, who represents Lauderdale County on the three-member commission, said tourism is one of the state's largest industries, and he and his fellow commissioners recognize the important role visitors play in local communities throughout the state. Having a strong transportation network is vital to keeping the stream of tourists flowing, he said.

"We feel like we are in a great spot with all the tourists you spoke of coming through," he said. "We know it would not be possible for them to come into Mississippi and spend all of the money that they spend if we did not put in place a good transportation infrastructure system."

Mississippi has a lot to offer, Simmons said, and even lifelong residents of the state can discover new parts of their home. There is plenty to do, see and learn in the Magnolia State, he said, and a lot of to be proud of.

"We have so much here in Mississippi that we can be proud of," he said. "It is unreal."

Can YOU Afford to Live in an RV? 10 Expenses You Might Not Think About

Posted: April 29, 2024 | Last updated: April 29, 2024

When I told my friends and family that I wanted to live in a van, they immediately thought I had lost my mind. They wondered why I would sell most of my possessions to live in a compact space with my husband and dog. They worried I would find myself in dangerous situations and miss the comforts of a warm home.

In reality, choosing van life over house life has been one of the best decisions I have made in my adult life. Here are the top reasons I did not follow the traditional path of purchasing a home and chose a life of adventure on the road instead.

The appeal of full-time RV living is on the rise as more people look for ways to break free from the daily routine. Yet, transitioning to life on the road isn’t without its challenges.

If you’re thinking about adopting an RV lifestyle, a crucial question to consider is: How much does it cost to live in an RV?

You’re in the right place to find out! In our slideshow today, we’ll break down the costs associated with RV living to help you figure out the budget that works best for you.

Let’s jump right in!

To help us calculate the costs, we enlisted an RV owner’s help. This RV owner lives in a 2021 Sunset Park RV Sunlite Classic 18RD.

Here are their average monthly costs:

Vehicle Insurance: $188

Vehicle Payment: $500

RV Insurance: $100

RV Payment: $300

Before any additional expenses, the Total Monthly RV cost is roughly $1,188

Of course, your monthly baseline will differ depending on your choices regarding RV type and insurance provider. It’s also important to remember this is just the baseline.

You will incur additional costs, too. Let’s look at those next…

1. How Much Does An RV Cost?

To help us calculate the costs, we enlisted an RV owner’s help. This RV owner lives in a 2021 Sunset Park RV Sunlite Classic 18RD .

Here are their average monthly costs:

 • Vehicle Insurance: $188
 • Vehicle Payment: $500
 • RV Insurance: $100
 • RV Payment: $300

Before any additional expenses, the Total Monthly RV cost is roughly $1,188

Of course, your monthly baseline will differ depending on your choices regarding RV type and insurance provider. It’s also important to remember this is just the baseline.

You will incur additional costs, too. Let’s look at those next…

Now we’ll discuss all the additional costs you can expect after your RV-related expenses. Here’s a list of all the other things you need to factor in if you decide to live an RV lifestyle:

Campsite Fees

Gas

Food

Utilities

Recreation

RV Repairs and Maintenance

Medical Insurance

Miscellaneous

Let’s take a deeper look into each factor!

2. What Are The Additional Costs Of RV Life?

Now we’ll discuss all the additional costs you can expect after your RV-related expenses. Here’s a list of all the other things you need to factor in if you decide to live an RV lifestyle:

 • Campsite Fees
 • RV Repairs and Maintenance
 • Medical Insurance
 • Miscellaneous

Let’s take a deeper look into each factor!

After purchasing your RV, you need to find somewhere to park it. Generally, camping fees are the most considerable additional cost of RV living.

The average cost to park at an RV campsite is $25 to $60 per night. However, luxury sites can cost up to $100.

Therefore, the cost for RV site rental for a month is approximately $500 to $1,200.

You can cut the costs, though! For example, investing in a portable generator will allow you to camp without a hookup. Alternatively, camping with friends can minimize costs.

This is what our RVer had to say about this:

“I’ve helped cousins with home renovations from San Diego to Tennessee in exchange for a free place to camp. Sometimes, they even offered a roomy shower or a night in a non-RV bed!”

3. Camping Fees

For car campers, the iOverlander app is an invaluable tool to locate safe and suitable places to stay overnight, beyond the usual rest areas and parking lots. This app provides a comprehensive database of camping spots, often with reviews and tips from other travelers. It helps you find locations that are welcoming to car campers, avoiding potentially unsafe spots. It can also guide you to scenic, off-the-beaten-path locations or convenient urban spots.

6. Utilities

Potential utility costs for RVs include propane, internet, phone expenses, and full hookups at RV parks. It’s also worth noting that some RV parks may or may not include electricity.

Some RV parks charge for electricity based on how much you use, which is usually added after the rental fees. As expected, costs can vary massively.

When we asked our anonymous RV owner how much he spends on utilities, he said:

“Adding everything up, I spend between $150 and $200 on utilities each month. Most of that is my phone plan and propane, as I tend to utilize free Internet at campsites or coffee shops as much as possible.”

To create more space, one user recommended removing the back seats.

7. Recreation

Of course, you need to budget for fun activities as well. Your budget will depend on what you like to do. For example, one person might budget for outdoor activities such as kayaking and boating, while others might spend their money on tours and museum visits.

Our RVer usually allocates $150 to $300 a month for recreation . Depending on where they travel, this might change, but they also budget for more than they hope to spend, so there are no surprises.

On average, RVers spend $100 to $200 monthly on general RV repairs and maintenance.

Having an emergency budget is also important in case something unexpected goes wrong. Take these words as a warning:

“Within the first six months of towing my single-axle trailer, I had both tires blowout on the interstate. Luckily, the blowouts didn’t cause any additional structural damage, and replacement tires for my small camper aren’t expensive.
This suggestion might seem quite simple, but a quick reminder to pack a small tool kit could make a huge difference on truck camping trips. On Reddit, several truck campers pointed out that small repairs are common.

Packing at least the basics will help you solve most minor problems. A helpful tool kit might include screwdrivers, a spanner, pliers, and a utility knife.

When discussing this tip, one user wrote, “I’d keep a small toolkit and a collection of fasteners with you. I was always having to tighten or refasten something in that camper.”

Meanwhile, another camper told readers to pack some zip ties and a small leveler for leveling their camper.

10. Miscellaneous

Adding more to your budget for unexpected costs is always a good idea. Adding approximately 10% to your expenses should be enough for any unforeseeable needs.

When we talk about unforeseeable needs, we refer to things like extra tools you need, souvenirs you want to buy, and additional camping supplies you might need to purchase.

Tennessee, Mississippi State baseball explain heated 5th-inning spat in SEC tournament game

HOOVER, Ala. — Tony Vitello was already boiling when he reached the mound Friday to take Drew Beam out of the game.

The Tennessee baseball coach believed the Vols already should have been out of the fifth inning, but weren't due to unfriendly umpiring. Then the Vols coach said he heard Mississippi State players yelling his name and tensions bubbled over between the Vols and Bulldogs.

"I’m not used to a bunch of guys hollering out my name and not reacting," Vitello said. "Maybe I brought it on myself, but I didn’t say anything to anybody. I’m just not used to that. If our players are yelling out Dave to the (Arkansas) coach Van Horn, in any form or fashion, we’ve got a problem. That’s just me.

"Maybe I bring it on myself, so I reacted and they reacted."

Players and coaches from Tennessee and Mississippi State spilled on to the field briefly in the fifth inning of Tennessee's 6-5 win at the Hoover Met on Friday in their SEC tournament elimination game. No one was ejected and tensions did not flare up again.

Vitello credited umpires with diffusing tensions well and said the SEC asked for no handshakes following the game.

What happened between Tennessee baseball and Mississippi State?

Tensions started with displeasure toward the umpires, according to Vitello. The Vols were upset with home-plate umpire Clint Fagan, who had called a ball on a potential third strike against MSU outfielder Bryce Chance that would have ended the inning. That followed catcher Cal Stark dropping a foul tip that would have been a strikeout as well.

"From my vantage point, which was my vantage point, we thought we were out of the inning a couple times," Vitello said after UT's 6-5 win . "I haven’t seen the video where you actually have a better perspective, but from our dugout, we thought we were out of the inning a couple times."

Mississippi State joined in on voicing its displeasure with the umpiring during the ensuing at-bat when third base umpire Kevin Sweeney said MSU shortstop David Mershon went around on a check-swing attempt. However, Mershon worked a walk to score the Bulldogs' first run and bring Connor Hujsak to the plate.

Tensions increased further after Hujsak tied the game 3-3 with a two-run single. Vitello went to remove Beam, which is when matters heated up. Hujsak appeared to chirp at the pitcher's mound where Beam and Vitello stood. Vitello responded and first-base umpire Derek Mollica yelled at the Mississippi State dugout to stop the verbal lobs.

After the game, Vitello said he was upset by MSU players shouting his name directly.

Mississippi State hitting coach, Christian Moore were upset during exchange

After Vitello started jawing at the Bulldogs' dugout, MSU hitting coach Jake Gautreau burst toward the first-base line. He had to be restrained by Bulldogs pitcher Stone Simmons and the umpires. Tennessee players Cal Stark and Christian Moore got involved in exchanging words. Moore had to be led back to the field by his teammates and the umpires after taking off his hat while moving toward the MSU dugout.

"Just talking back and forth and probably got out of control," MSU coach Chris Lemonis said. "I was actually underneath. I came out late. I didn't even see the initial stuff happening."

Players on both teams remained largely in or around their respective dugouts amid the disturbance.

After the brief conflict, Vitello said Mississippi State outfielder Dakota Jordan was joking with the UT dugout before hitting a two-run single.

"All the players that were involved in the game were all cordial — kind of how it’s been in the conference," Vitello said. "These guys have a ton of respect for one another."

Tennessee advanced to the SEC Tournament semifinals with the win. A rematch with No. 8 seed Vanderbilt awaits Saturday (approximately 4 p.m. ET, SEC Network).
