Homegrown hospitality star Androse Bell resigns as GM at Daytona's Hard Rock Hotel

D AYTONA BEACH —  Androse Bell , general manager of the Hard Rock Hotel , one of the destination’s marquee beachside properties, has resigned from that position, according to hotel officials.

Since taking the helm at the Hard Rock shortly after its grand opening in 2018 , Bell has been widely regarded as a rising star in the Daytona Beach tourism and hospitality industry.

In addition to the Hard Rock, he also oversaw operations at the 133-room Delta By Marriott in Daytona Beach Shores as part of his leadership role at six southeastern properties as GM and regional director of operations for Atlanta-based hotel management company Hospitality Ventures Management Group.

During that time period, Bell received numerous accolades from HVMG, including 2019 GM of the Year, Hard Rock Hotel of the Year and Delta Hotel of the Year twice.

Bell’s departure came as a surprise to the staff, according to Susan Keaveney, the hotel’s director of marketing, who confirmed the news.

“I don’t have a lot of details,” said Keaveney, adding that Bell relayed the news to staff members by text message last Tuesday, news that was followed by an official corporate announcement on Friday.

“He (Bell) said he would cherish all of the great memories and looked forward to watching our continued success,” Keaveney said.

Michael Bartscher, who has been the hotel’s director of operations since 2020, is now the Hard Rock’s acting general manager, she said.

“He’s been our director of operations for four years and he’s been phenomenal running the hotel from an operations standpoint,” Keaveney said. “When you’re in that role, you’re overseeing food and beverage, front desk operations, maintenance, you’re over everything. He’s well-versed to be acting GM for us.”

Bell didn’t respond to text or voicemail messages seeking comment. Nor were calls and emails to HVMG’s Atlanta headquarters returned. A call to Abbas Abdulhussein, head of Asante Asset Management LLC, the hotel’s owner, also wasn't immediately returned. 

Bell heralded as homegrown hospitality success story

Bob Davis, president and CEO of the Lodging & Hospitality Association of Volusia County, praised Bell’s attributes in an email to the organization’s membership about his departure, referring to him as “a gem in our industry.”

“I predict a great hospitality future for him,” Davis said.

In addition to his role at the Hard Rock, Bell also serves as a member of the Halifax Area Advertising Authority board of directors, the county-appointed board that oversees and funds the Daytona Beach Area Convention & Visitors Bureau through county bed tax collections generated by occupancy at hotels and other lodging.

Bell is currently chair of the HAAA board, serving a term that runs through May 2025.

"Androse Bell has been a strong leader in the hotel industry in this community," said Lori Campbell Baker, executive director of the Daytona Beach Area CVB. "He is an amazing HAAA board member and has provided thoughtful leadership as our chair."

Baker said on Tuesday that she hasn't yet heard from Bell about his future plans.

"Androse is bright and talented, and we look forward to hearing what his next opportunity is, which will hopefully be in the Halifax area," she said.

In Daytona Beach, Bell, who was 30 when he took the helm at Hard Rock , represented a homegrown success story. He returned to leadership roles in the hotel industry to build on a foundation provided by the hospitality management program at Bethune-Cookman University, where he graduated in 2011.

He completed an MBA in Marketing in 2013 at Keiser University in Daytona Beach.

“I have always been great with numbers, analyzing data,” Bell said in an interview with The News-Journal shortly after starting at the Hard Rock in 2018. “Then, at some point, I found I had an interest in people. Something in me loves making people happy, loves making people smile. This just seemed like a good way to merge the two.”

Although he did attend college in Daytona Beach, playing running back for four years on Bethune-Cookman’s football team, Bell and his younger sisters were raised by a single mother in Palm Bay in Brevard County. After graduation from Palm Bay High School in 2006, he moved to Daytona Beach.

At Bethune-Cookman, Bell was motivated by professors such as Andrea White-McNeil and Ruth Smith, among others who wouldn’t accept less than his best, he said.

“They wouldn’t accept any of my excuses — ’There was a football game’ or ‘I have girlfriend trouble,’” Bell said in 2018. “They kept pushing me and they let me know that if I kept pushing, I’d be a success in life. It worked for me.”

Working his way up the ranks, Bell hailed as 'future industry superstar'

In addition, Bell developed career skills under the supervision of one of the area’s key hotel managers, and worked his way through the ranks at one of Volusia County’s most renowned beachfront hotels.

In Melbourne Beach, Bell worked as a manager at the 207-room DoubleTree Suites by Hilton for two years starting in the summer of 2015. He was recruited for that job by the hotel’s general manager, Jim Berkley, now in the same role at the 744-room Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort, the area’s largest hotel.

“Androse had an incredible charisma about him that was a mixture of intelligence, patience and a genuine relatable attitude with every team member he encountered,” Berkley said in 2018. “I knew he was going to be a future industry superstar the moment we shook hands and met for the first time.”

Before arriving at the Hard Rock, Bell also worked from 2011 to 2015 at the 212-room Shores Resort & Spa in Daytona Beach Shores. There, he rose in the ranks from reservations sales coordinator to director of rooms, a job that involved direction of the hotel’s front office, valet and bell services, housekeeping and reservations.
